In this review, the nature of carbon-containing molecules and carbonaceous solids present in meteorites, comets, and the interstellar medium is discussed. Carbon plays an active role in the lifecycle of stars and the interstellar medium. It is the basis of a rich interstellar chemistry and the main component of pre-biotic organic material in space. The aim of the review is to build a bridge between astronomical spectroscopy and laboratory studies relevant to the investigation of cosmic carbon. Special emphasis is given to the structural variety of carbon-containing species and their characterization by experimental techniques. Based on the Hipparcos proper motions and available radial velocity data of O-B stars, we have re-examined the local kinematical structure of the young disk population of-1500 O-B stars not including the Gould-belt stars. A systematic warping motion of the stars about the direction to the Galactic center has been reconfirmed. A negative K-term implying a systematic contraction of stars in the solar vicinity has been detected. Two different distance scales are used in order to find out their impact on the kinematical parameters, and we conclude that the adopted distance scale plays an important role in characterizing the kinematical parameters at the present level of the measurement uncertainty.  相似文献

The scientific satellite SST (Space Solar Telescope) is an important research project strongly supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Every day, SST acquires 50 GB of data (after processing) but only 10GB can be transmitted to the ground because of limited time of satellite passage and limited channel volume. Therefore, the data must be compressed before transmission. Wavelets analysis is a new technique developed over the last 10 years, with great potential of application. We start with a brief introduction to the essential principles of wavelet analysis, and then describe the main idea of embedded zerotree wavelet coding, used for compressing the SST images. The results show that this coding is adequate for the job.  相似文献

A very brief introduction on ASO-S is presented here, including the background, scientific goals, payload deployments, mission assembly, and organizations. This contribution is a follow-up to the recent paper of Kuznetsov et al. (Contrib. Astron. Obs. Skalnaté Pleso 36, 85, 2006) on the ground level enhancement (GLE) on 20 January 2005. We focused on a study of Forbush decrease (FD) of 17 – 18 and 21 – 22 January 2005, respectively. The data from the neutron monitor at Lomnicky Štít (1 min counts) and from the Geomagnetic Observatory in Hurbanovo, both in Slovakia, were used as the basis for our investigation. The data on magnetic field and solar wind from GOES 10 and 12, SOHO-CELIAS, ACE and WIND satellites were used for better understanding of the global evolution of the event. The magnetic field is transformed to the RTN (Radial – Tangential – Normal) system where only the disturbed part of the field is compared, i.e., daily variations and a constant part are subtracted. The field reduction method is described. Our results are temporal vector diagrams of variation of all parameters at all positions from where we used the data. The amplitudes of |B| exceed 100 nT and variations during the arrival of the wavefront of CME take place simultaneously at the ground-based station and at GOES satellites. The character of the variations is as if there would be regions with the dominant electric charge of opposite signs, or electric currents with different orientations in the CME. On the basis of the values v p and n p and using certain assumptions we determined the mass of CME on 17 January and 21 January, respectively, of 1012 kg. A decrease of the cosmic ray level runs suddenly (during 10 minutes), starting, however, about two hours after a sudden change of the magnetic field.  相似文献

In separate projects, the Hubble Space Telescope has been used to assess the nature of 3 unusual objects: Chiron, Pholus and P/Shoemaker-Levy 9. This paper will compare these objects and discuss how the unique capabilities of the HST may be used to address the issue of cometary activity in each. Chiron, which has exhibited obvious cometary characteristics for several years, might have a bound dust coma that is unresolvable from the ground. In an attempt to directly observe this bound coma, we have obtained a series of images of Chiron with the HST Planetary Camera. Inner coma structure out to 0.2 has been detected. From these observations we infer a low bulk nucleus density for Chiron. Both HST and ground-based images of 5145 Pholus have been obtained to search for evidence of activity. The ground-based data give the most sensitive limits; however, it is shown that the WFPC-2 on HST can give limits 2–3 orders of magnitude more sensitive than conventional ground-based limits. Finally, as part of a collaborative effort, we have been obtaining HST observations of SL9 in order to determine the fragment sizes and to assess their nature (i.e., cometary vs. asteroid). Both ground-based observations from the UH 2.2m telescope on Mauna Kea and HST observations show that the near-nucleus dust is redder than the sun. While FOS spectra did not detect OH emission, the WFPC-2 HST data show that the inner coma remained very circular from July 1993 up until 2 weeks prior to impact, implying continued production of dust.  相似文献

Collinear libration points play an important role in deep space exploration because of their special positions and dynamical characteristics. Since motion around them is unstable, we need to control the spacecraft if we wish to keep them around such a libration point for a long time. We present the results of a statistical study of the solar cycle based on the analysis of the superficial toroidal magnetic field component phase space. The magnetic field component used to create the embedded phase space was constructed from monthly sunspot number observations since 1750. The phase space was split into 32 sections (or time instants) and the average values of the orbits on this phase space were calculated (giving the most probable cycle). In this phase space it is shown that the magnetic field on the Sun’s surface evolves through a set of orbits that go around a mean orbit (i.e., the most probable magnetic cycle that we interpret as the equilibrium solution). It follows that the most probable cycle is well represented by a van der Pol oscillator limit curve (equilibrium solution), as can be derived from mean-field dynamo theory. This analysis also retrieves the empirical Gnevyshev – Ohl’s rule between the first and second parts of the solar magnetic cycle. The sunspot number evolution corresponding to the most probable cycle (in phase space) is presented.  相似文献

The success of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) first and then of the STIS and COS spectrographs on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) demonstrate the impact that observations at UV wavelengths had and are having on modern astronomy. Several discoveries in the exoplanet field have been done at UV wavelengths. Nevertheless, the amount of data collected in this band is still limited both in terms of observed targets and time spent on each of them. For the next decade, the post-HST era, the only large (2-m class) space telescope capable of UV observations will be the World Space Observatory–UltraViolet (WSO–UV). In its characteristics, the WSO–UV mission is similar to that of HST, but all observing time will be dedicated to UV astronomy. In this work, we briefly outline the major prospects of the WSO–UV mission in terms of exoplanet studies. To the limits of the data and tools currently available, here we also compare the quality of key exoplanet data obtained in the far-UV and near-UV with HST (STIS and COS) to that expected to obtain with WSO–UV.  相似文献

Two aspects of the orbital evolution of space debris — the long-term evolution and the short-term one — are of interest for an exploration of the near-Earth space. The paper presents some results concerning the estimation of the accuracy of predicted positions of Earth-orbiting objects for the short-term: a few revolutions or a time-span interval of a few days. Calculations of predicted positions take into account the influence of an arbitrary number of spherical coefficients of the Earth gravity potential. Differences in predicted positions due to differences in the best contemporary geopotential models (JGM-2, JGM-3 and GRIM4-S4) are estimated with the use of an analytical theory of motion and a numerical integration.  相似文献

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) release tremendous amounts of energy in the solar system, which has an impact on satellites, power facilities and wireless transmission. To effectively detect a CME in Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) C2 images, we propose a novel algorithm to locate the suspected CME regions, using the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) method and taking into account the features of the grayscale and the texture. Furthermore, space–time continuity is used in the detection algorithm to exclude the false CME regions. The algorithm includes three steps: i) define the feature vector which contains textural and grayscale features of a running difference image; ii) design the detection algorithm based on the ELM method according to the feature vector; iii) improve the detection accuracy rate by using the decision rule of the space–time continuum. Experimental results show the efficiency and the superiority of the proposed algorithm in the detection of CMEs compared with other traditional methods. In addition, our algorithm is insensitive to most noise.  相似文献

We present HST-WFPC2/Hα deep images of the ejected nebula M1-67. Our data suggest that M1-67 is the imprint of a previous, slow LBV wind ejected from the central star WR124, now a WN8 star. We find evidence that the LBV wind is highly variableand anisotropic. Some dense, persisting clumps have possibly been ejected directly from the stellar surface. We present scientific program construction principles and a time allocation scheme developed for the World Space Observatory—Ultraviolet (WSO-UV) mission, which is an international space observatory for observation in UV spectral range 100–300 nm. The WSO-UV consists of a 1.7 m aperture telescope with instrumentation designed to carry out high resolution spectroscopy, long-slit low resolution spectroscopy and direct sky imaging. The WSO-UV Ground Segment is under development by Spain and Russia. They will coordinate the Mission and Science Operations and provide the satellite tracking stations for the project.  相似文献

In this summary of the conference Space Astronomy: the UV Window to the Universe, held in El?Escorial, Spain, May 28 to June 1, 2007, I identify the important scientific questions posed by the speakers and the corresponding discoveries that future ultraviolet space instruments should enable. The science objectives described by the various speakers naturally fall into groups according to the needed instrumental requirements: wavelength coverage, spectral resolution, sensitivity, rapid access to targets, monitoring, and signal/noise. Although most of the science objectives presented during the conference require UV spectra in the 1,170–3,200 Å range, there are important science objectives that require spectra in the 912–1,170 Å range and at shorter wavelengths. I identify the limitations of present instruments for meeting these requirements. To avoid the upcoming UV dark age, important work must be done to properly build the World Space Observatory (WSO) and to plan future space missions.  相似文献

The properties of optical vortices produced with spiral phase plates have recently found interesting applications in astronomical coronagraphy. Here we review the characteristics of the optical vortex coronagraph. Our simulations show that the intensity of an on-axis star can be fainted by 10 orders of magnitude, thus allowing the detection of close faint sources like extrasolar planets. We also discuss the expected coronagraphic performances achievable with a stepped spiral phase plate.  相似文献
