The orientations of dykes from many of the islands of the Lesser Antilles island arc have been mapped. Most of these dykes can be interpreted in terms of local or regional swarms derived from specific volcanoes of known age, with distinct preferred orientations. Dykes are known from all Cenozoic epochs except the Palaeocene, but are most common in Pliocene, Miocene and Oligocene rocks. A majority of the sampled dykes are basaltic, intrude volcaniclastic host rocks and show a preference for widths of 1–1.25 m. Locally, dyke swarms dilate their hosts by up to 9% over hundreds of metres and up to 2% over distances of kilometres. The azimuths of dykes of all ages show a general NE-SW preferred orientation with a second NW-SE mode particularly in the Miocene rocks of Martinique. The regional setting for these minor intrusions is a volcanic front above a subduction zone composed of three segments: Saba-Montserrat, Guadeloupe-Martinique, St. Lucia-Grenada. The spacing of volcanic centres along this front is interpreted in terms of rising plumes of basaltic magma spaced about 30 km apart. This magma is normally intercepted at crustal depths by dioritic plutons and andesitic/dacitic magma generated there. Plumes which intersect transverse fracture systems or which migrate along the front can avoid these crustal traps. Throughout its history the volcanic front as a whole has migrated, episodically, towards the backarc at an average velocity of about 1 km/Ma. The local direction of plate convergence is negatively correlated with the local preferred orientation of dykes. The dominant NE-SW azimuth mode corresponds closely to the direction of faulting in the sedimentary cover of the backarc and the inferred tectonic fabric of the oceanic crust on which the arc is founded. A generalised model of the regional stress field that controls dyke intrusion outside of the immediate vicinity of central volcanic vents is proposed, in which the maximum horizontal stress parallels the volcanic front except in the northern segment where subduction of the Barracuda Rise perturbs the stress field. There is also evidence of specific temporal changes in the stress field that are probably due to large scale plate kinematics.  相似文献

A new multidisciplinary study, combining geology, petrography, and geochemistry, on the rocks of the isolated hill of Mount Calanna (Mount Etna, Italy) has provided evidence for the existence of a dyke swarm, formed by more than 200 dykes distributed over an area of ~0.7 km2, with an intensity of intrusion up to 40%. All bodies are deeply altered, and the geological and mesostructural surveying of 132 dykes revealed that they intruded in E–W direction, with an average dip of 60°. The faults affecting the outcrop have in general an E–W strike and dip of ~55°: these have all normal motion and have been interpreted as coeval with the dykes. This interpretation contrasts with the previous hypothesis that considered Mount Calanna as a thrust resulting from compressive deformation resulting from the gravitational spreading of the volcanic edifice. Mount Calanna is here interpreted as the uppermost portion of a vertically extensive magmatic plexus that fed the eruptive activity of one (or more) eruptive center/s sited in the Valle del Bove area. Measurements of the apparent densities on 23 dykes and host rock samples give an average value of 2,420 kg/m3 for the entire complex, ~15% lower than the density expected for hawaiitic magma, placing an important constraint on the geophysical identification of similar structures. Considering that Mount Etna is not an old eroded edifice but an active and growing volcano, the exposure of this subvolcanic structure can be regarded as exceptional. Its geometry and physical characteristics can be thus regarded as an interesting example of the present-day shallow plumbing system of Mount Etna as well as of other basaltic volcanoes.  相似文献

The ratio salic rocks/basalts is higher in Tenerife than in other Atlantic islands. It is also surprising the number of intermediate types between phonolites and trachytes and the basalts. The salic rocks of Tenerife have been grouped in to two large units, one related to the edifice of « Las Cañadas » and the other to « Teide-Pico Viejo ». The top of the former collapsed and the latter was built in the Caldera thus formed. Both units belong to a middle atlantic series, but the atlantic character of « Teide-Pico Viejo » is stronger. A clear alkalinitization can be observed during the whole evolution. Most of the materials which are related to the Cañadas edifice are near the saturation line, and they must be classed as phonolites and Na-trachytes. In these rocks a variation trend related to that of the former alkaline basalts can be observed. In the latest episodes of their evolution cutaxite and pumice emissions appeared with great intensity. The « Teide-Pico Viejo » lava-flows are always of phonolite types with high amounts of normative nepheline. These materials also represented the end of the differentiation trend of an alkaline basaltic series, which started after the Cañadas edifice was built. This second trend ended in less silica-rich rocks than those of the Cañadas series.  相似文献

Volcanic rocks of the Sunda and Banda arcs range from tholeiitic through calcalkaline and shoshonitic to leucititic, the widest compositional span of mafic magmatism known from an active arc setting.Mafic rocks in our data set, which includes 315 new analyses of volcanic rocks from twelve Quaternary volcanoes, including Batu Tara in the previously geochemically unknown Flores-Lembata arc sector, are generally similar to those from other island arcs: most contain <1.3 wt. % TiO2 and 16–22 wt. % Al2O3, and have characteristically high K/Nb and La/Nb values. Abundances of P, Ba, Rb, Sr, La, Ce, Nd, Zr and Nb increase sympathetically with increasing K2O contents of mafic rocks but those of Na, Ti, Y and Sc vary little throughout the geochemical continuum from low-K tholeiitic to high-K leucititic rocks.Excluding Sumatra and Wetar, which possess mainly dacitic and rhyolitic volcanics, the Sunda-Banda arc is divisible into four geochemical arc sectors with boundaries that correlate with major changes in regional tectonic setting and geological history. From west to east, the West Java, Bali and Flores arc sectors each comprise volcanoes which become progressively more K-rich eastwards, culminating in the leucitite volcanoes Muriah, Soromundi and Sangenges, and Batu Tara, respectively. In the most easterly Banda sector, the volcanics vary from high- to low-K eastwards around the arc.Correlations between geochemistry and 87Sr/86Sr values show separate trends for each of the four arc sectors, believed to be the result of involvement of at least three geochemically and isotopically distinct components in the source regions of the arc magmatism.A dominant source component with a low K content and a low 87Sr/86Sr value, and common to all sectors, is probably peridotitic mantle. A second component, with low K content but high 87Sr/86Sr value, appears to be crustal material. This component is most apparent in the Banda sector, in keeping with that sector's tectonic setting close to Precambrian Australian continental crust, but it is also present to lesser extents in the West Java and Flores sectors. However, the most marked geochemical and isotopic variations shown by the arc volcanics are primarily due to the involvement of a third component, which is rich in K-group elements but has relatively low 87Sr/86Sr values. This component appears to be mantle-derived and is least overprinted by crustal material in the Bali sector volcanics where the Pb, Be, U-Th and O isotope characteristics of the rocks support the suggestion that their genesis has not involved incorporation of recently subducted, continent-derived sialic material. The high, regionally persistent, Th/U value (about 4.3) of the Sunda subarc mantle, obtained from U-Th isotopic data, suggests a close association could exist between the K-rich component and the southern hemisphere ‘DUPAL’ mantle isotopic anomaly.  相似文献

Neoproterozoic magmatic rocks are widespread in the western margin of the Yangtze block, and their origin and genesis have significant implications for understanding the evolution of the Rodinia super- continent. However, there are currently two opposing interpretations for their petrogenesis and tectonic setting: mantle plume-related and island arc origin. To further verify these two competing models, SHRIMP U-Pb zircon age determinations and geochemical and Nd-Hf isotopic analyses are conducted on the mafic dykes in the Kangdian Rift, western Sichuan. U-Pb dating suggests that these mafic dykes were emplaced at 780―760 Ma, spatially and temporally coeval with the Kangding granitoid complex. The parental magmas of these dykes were derived from a depleted asthenosphere mantle source likely triggered by an anomalously-hot mantle plume. Despite some arc-geochemical features caused by variable degrees of contamination of young island arc crust during magma ascending and emplace- ment, they show general geochemical and Nd-Hf isotopic features similar to those of the intraplate basalts. Our results support the reconstruction model of Rodinia in which the South China block was located between Australia and Laurentia.  相似文献

The Nyamaji volcano is a small eruptive complex of late Miocene age associated with the nearby Usaki ijolite and Sokolo carbonatite intrusion of Homa Bay in the Kavirondo Rift valley of Kenya. It is probably a satellite volcano to the major volcanic structure of Kisingiri - Rangwa which lies 25 km to the west. The Nyamaji volcanic complex is composed of agglomerates, breccias and tuffs erupted from a central vent, whilst at much the same time lavas were extruded from fissures which are now occupied by dykes. These two contemporaneous events gave rise to an interdigitated sequence of pyroclastic deposits and effusive lavas. The pyroclastic rocks of Vulcanian origin cover an area at least 30 km2 in extent, are poorly bedded, and usually are about 25 m (80ft.) thick though they often thin to zero over topographic highs in the pre-existing landscape. At Nyamaji itself, the Strombolian style pyroclastic pile exceeds 330 m (1100 ft.) in thickness over an area of 1 km2, and this marks the position of the original central vent. The fragmental material in the pyroclastic rocks includes ijolite, phonolite, nephelinite, trachyte, carbonatite, granite, and feldspathic and aegirine-bearing fenites; the matrix is sometimes calcareous, sometimes feldspathic. Nephelinitic lavas occur amongst the lowest lavas, but the lavas above are nearly all phonolitic. The oldest dykes are nephelinitic and are rare; the youngest dykes are phonolitic and are abundantly exposed. Both lavas and dykes contain xenoliths similar to those in the pyroclastic rocks. A series of volcanic plugs pierce the lavas. These plugs, mostly non-conduit type, average 200–500 m diameter, are mainly composed of glassy to very fine-grained phonolites, and show good flow structures. The plugs, especially those near the Ruri hills, tend to lie along N - S and E - W lines. The majority of the dykes also lie along these directions. The dominant structural directions within the nearby Usaki ijolite complex and the Wasaki carbonatite are also N - S and E - W, respectively. These directions are quite different from the axis of the Kavirondo rift valley which here is NE - SW, and from the strike of the Precambrian basement. The Nyamaji volcanic structure differs from nearly all the other East African volcanoes by its dominant phonolitic petrochemistry.  相似文献

Vocanic rocks of Karoo age which today cover more than 140,000 km2 of the southern African sub-continent occur as scattered outliers representing eroded remnants of an originally more extensive volcanic province. The rocks are best preserved in central southern Africa including Lesotho, and the continental margin areas of Namibia in the west and Mozambique. Zambabwe, Swaziland and South Africa in the east. Extensive lava fields (yet few volcanoes) dykes, sills, layered intrusions and at least two major dyke swarms characterise the region. Volcano-stratigraphic and geochemical mapping have been used to subdivide the volcanic successions found in the different areas and recently adopted nomenclature is presented. Considerable more variability and complexity occurs in the volcanic succession than was previously recognised: geochemical variations and stratigraphic relationships indicating that four major provinces can be recognised. Rocks from the central Karoo areas are primarily of basaltic composition whereas those from the western and eastern marginal areas include mafic basic, intermediate and acid types. Emplacement of rocks such as carbonatites, nephelinites, and picrite basalts enriched in incompatible elements, indicate that derivation from a heterogeneously enriched source played a significant role in the petrogenesis of a large proportion of the Karoo mafic and basic rocks. Age relationships of the volcanic rocks reveal that vulcanicity extended over a period of 130 m.y. from mid-Triassic to early Cretaceous time.  相似文献

Abstract   The chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method (CHIME) has been applied to determine the ages of monazite grains from metasediments of greenscshist-amphibolite facies in the Altai orogen, northwest China. The area of distribution of these metamorphic rocks is divided into the Permian (261–268 Ma) central-western and Devonian (377–382 Ma) eastern units on the basis of their metamorphic ages. The Devonian CHIME ages are consistent with the Pb–Pb ages of granitoid in the eastern unit, and support the idea that emplacement of the granitoids was synchronous with regional metamorphism at deep levels. The Permian metamorphic ages (the present study) and igneous ages previously reported from the central-western unit can be interpreted in terms of subduction of crustal material and oceanic plate, and rapid exhumation.  相似文献

The Proterozoic anorogenic magmatic rocks are well developed in the Bayan Obo deposit region. They are composed of trachyte, magnesioarfvedesonite-feldspatite, potash-rhyolite, dacite, rhyolite, quartz porphyry and trachy basalt. A lot of high-K diabase veins (dykes) are also found. These anorogenic magmatic rocks are derived from the mantle. They have lowerɛNd(t) (4.52-5.88) with T Nd DM = 1.54-1.92 Ga. Their Nd isotopic compositions and T Nd DM are consistent with those of ores, implying that the ore-forming materials were derived from these anorogenic magmatic rocks. The zircon U-Pb ages of the rocks are 1.8 Ga. Research results indicate that the Bayan Obo Group was replaced by the hydrothermal solution related to the anorogenic magmatic rocks, resulting in the formation of the deposit.

Analyses for Ti, Zr, Y, Nb and Sr in over 200 basaltic rocks from different tectonic settings have been used to construct diagrams in which these settings can usually be identified. Basalts erupted within plates (ocean island and continental basalts) can be identified using a Ti-Zr-Y diagram, ocean-floor basalts, and low-potassium tholeiites and calc-alkali basalts from island arcs can be identified using a Ti-Zr diagram (for altered samples) and a Ti-Zr-Sr diagram (for fresh samples). Y/Nb is suggested as a parameter for indicating whether a basalt is of tholeiitic or alkalic nature. Analyses of dykes and pillow lavas from the Troodos Massif of Cyprus are plotted on these diagrams and appear to the tholeiitic ocean-floor rocks.  相似文献

The Pliocene-Pleistocene subaerial volcanic activity of the island of Sardinia developed from about five million years ago to the Pleistocene. Volcanism was mainly fissural, related to rifting of the Sardinian crustal block and connected to intraplate tensional tectonics involving at the same time the area of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Areally the most abundant rocks are basic, ranging in serial character from alkaline to subalkaline types. In some areas intermediate and salic lavas also occur; trachytic and phonolitic rocks are mainly associated with basalts of alkaline affinity, whereas rhyolites and dacites are mainly related to subalkalic basalts. K/Ar data show that lavas of different serial character (from alkalic to subalkalic) are produced on the island within the same time range, from about four to two million years; it is to be noted, however, that the early products (about 5 million years) are mildly alkalic in character whereas most of the youngest products (0.6–0.14 million years) are strongly alkalic.  相似文献

1) Petrochemical studies of volcanic rocks shows that alkaline rocks of continents and oceans are different genetically in spite of their mineralogical and chemical similarity. 2) Oceanic rocks develop according to the following type: tholeiitic basalt — olivine basalt — alkaline rocks. 3) Continental alkaline rocks are derivatives of initially alkaline basalts and are connected by gradual transitions with calc-alkaline rocks of island arcs. 4) The source of all volcanic rocks is the upper mantle. Therefore the existence of two main types of rocks — oceanic and continental — reflects basic heterogeneities in composition and structure of the upper mantle.  相似文献

Occurrences of peralkaline acid volcanic rocks on oceanic islands are reviewed. Peralkaline differentiates are usually associated with mildly alkaline or transitional basalts and often with related sodic intermediate rocks. A compositional gap between basaltic and salic rocks is not invariably present. Although a comenditic end member is more usual in the oceanic suites, pantellerites are particularly well developed on Socorro Island and also on Gran Canaria where they form extensive ignimbrite sheets. There may be a genetic distinction between peralkaline rocks of islands which lie near the crests of oceanic rises and those which are built on broad submarine plateaux.  相似文献

An attempt is made to find a more objective and precise basis for the correlation of volcanics from southwestern Africa and South America than is possible by frequency diagrams of individual K—Ar ages. This leads to a critical appraisal of conventionally calculated K—Ar ages with the conclusion thata priori assumption regarding the isotopic composition of non-radiogenic argon and, hence, the standard atmospheric correction, are no longer tenable.K—Ar isotoopic data on Mesozoic basalts and dolerites from Namibia and Brazil are presented in terms of an isochron model. Plots for cogenetic rocks are unacceptably scattered on a “radiogenic”40Ar vs. K diagram, but show a high degree of collinearity on40Ar/36Ar diagrams0K/36Ar diagrams. Using the latter plots, a number of isochrons are generated which indicate that Mesozoic volcanism in these regions occured as several discrete episodes of fairly short duration. Effusion of the extensive Serra Geral basalts of Brazil and the Kaoko basalts of Namibia is shown to have occured simultaneeously at 121 m.y.B.P. Basalts from a series of boreholes along the central Parana Basin, as well as a group of dykes from Sao Paulo, yield isochrons of 128 m.y., which coincides with the postulated onset of separation of Africa and South America based on marine magnetic anomalies. Linear dyke swarms along the Namibian seaboard, interpreted as an expression of the earliest rift phase, have an isochron age of 134 m.y. Sills and dykes, mainly from southern Namibia, with isochron ages of 183 m.y. are considered to be the westernmost manifestation of Stormberg volcanism, not necessarily related to rifting. Most of the igneous suites examined have initial40Ar/36Ar ratios significantly different from the modern atmospheric value.  相似文献

The largest volumes of peralkaline silicic rocks are found in areas of epeirogenic uplift and rift formation on the continents, but they may also form in several other tectonic settings, such as the oceanic islands, during the later stages of orogenic cycles, as isolated occurrences in active mobile belts, and in areas of extensional tectonics at or near continental plate margins. Their emplacement is effected during periods of dominantly tensional stresses. The peralkaline silicic rocks are typically members of the transitional, mildly aikaline basalt-trachyte association. Associated salic rocks are commonly feld-spathoidal and/or anorthite-normative, as well as peralkaline. Two main types of association are distinguished: firstly, provinces where the peralkaline rocks are mainly of comenditic type, where the salic rocks are in relatively low abundance compared to basic, and where the intermediate (Daly) composition gap is not present; secondly, provinces of pantelleritic or mixed pantelleritic-comenditic volcanism, where the basic : acid volume relationships are reversed and where the Daly gap is usually markedly developed.  相似文献

Dykes are the principal channels through which magma reaches the surface in volcanic eruptions. For this reason dykes observed in the field are commonly assumed to be feeders to lava flows. The actual proportion of dykes reaching the surface is, however, poorly known. In order to develop models for the purpose of estimating volcanic hazard, this proportion must be known. This follows because such models should not only consider the probability of dykes being injected from magma chambers during periods of unrest in the associated volcanoes, but also the probability of the injected dykes being arrested. This paper presents field data on several thousand dykes from Iceland and Tenerife (Canary Islands) indicating that many, and probably most, dykes become arrested at various crustal levels and never reach the surface to feed eruptions. Using the results of analytical and numerical models, it is shown that, for common loading conditions, the stress field in the vicinity of a magma chamber may favour the injection and propagation of dykes while the stress field at a certain distance from the chamber favours dyke arrest. This means that many dykes that are injected from the chamber propagate only for a very limited distance from the chamber to the point where they become arrested. The implication is that during periods of unrest in volcanoes, the probability of volcanic eruption is only a small fraction of the probability of dyke injection from the source magma chamber.  相似文献

Historical volcanic rocks of the Aeolian islands range in composition from shoshonitic basalts to rhyolites, which might reflect fractional crystallization of a shoshonitic parent magma. However Sr and Pb isotopic data indicate a more complex history. The shoshonitic basalts at present erupted at Stromboli, although chemically similar to the postulated parent magma, are genetically unrelated to the other studied rocks. Sr isotopes indicate that Vulcano, Vulcanello and Lipari had independent magma sources. It is proposed that crustal contamination raised the Sr isotopic composition of the Lipari rhyolites. The rocks of these island are related by a common very steep trend of207Pb/204Pbvs. 206Pb/204Pb. Such a trend is a common feature of orogenic magmas and shows that Pb was derived by mixing of at least two components. Presently it is impossible to constrain precisely either the timing or the physical meaning of the Pb end members. The Pb isotopic trend in the Eolian island is very distinct from those recorded in volcanic rocks both from behind the arc (Etna, Iblean Mts.) and from Central and Southern Italy.  相似文献

New stratigraphic, major- and trace-element, and Sr-, Nd- and Pb- isotopic data on volcanic deposits older than 14 ka from the island of Procida, Italy, are presented and compared with published analyses from the rest of the Phlegraean Volcanic District (PVD). Procida rocks range in composition from basalt to shoshonite and trachyte and show 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd, 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios varying within the ranges 0.70523–0.70678, 0.512539–0.512630, 18.99–19.29, 15.67–15.69 and 39.10–39.39, respectively. The presence of a compositional gap in the range SiO2=54–59 wt % is evidence of magma bimodality, and suggests that the feeding magmatic system was formed by at least two different reservoirs located at different depths. Geochemical and isotopic variations with increasing differentiation can be explained by fractional crystallization mechanisms, that in some cases were associated with crustal contamination that occurred in both deeper and shallower reservoirs; the most evolved magmas formed in the shallower one. Mixing/mingling processes also occurred. The variation of isotopic composition through time observed both for Procida and for Campi Flegrei and Ischia rocks is evidence of strong affinity between magmas that erupted on the entire PVD until about 40 ka. This indicates that they share a common origin and a common plumbing system. Most of the PVD eruptive centers active until about 40 ka lie within a NE-SW-oriented volcano-tectonic belt extending from the southeastern part of Ischia, through Procida and Torregaveta volcano to the northeastern sector of the present Campi Flegrei caldera. This not only indicates the existence of a link between regional structures and volcanism in the area, but also suggests that PVD magma genesis and evolution were strongly regulated by extensional tectonics. In the last 40 ka the mafic rocks erupted along this extensional structure – from Torregaveta and the islands of Ischia and Procida – indicate that it still represents an important crustal discontinuity that focuses mantle-derived magmas. Procida trachybasalts are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light and middle rare earth elements (LREE and MREE), and show slight negative anomalies in the high field strength elements (HFSE) relative to average MORB. A slight depletion in HREE is present. Trace element and isotope systematics can be referred to a lithospheric mantle source. The lithospheric mantle source carries intra-plate and slab-derived components, the latter probably inherited from a previous subduction event.  相似文献
