This is the second part of a study conducted to determine whether polymeric sampling tubing can affect organic analyte concentrations during a sampling event. In this part of the study, we looked for sorption and desorption of tricholoroethylene (TCE) and leaching of organic constituents in water pumped through five types of polymeric tubing. The materials tested were a rigid fluoropolymer, a flexible fluoropolymer, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and two plasticized polypropylene tubings. The effects of tubing length and flow rate were examined.
The least sorptive tubings, both initially and at equilibrium, were the fluoropolymers. However, in some instances the LDPE tubing had little effect on TCE concentrations. This was when a slow flow rate was used to sample relatively shallow wells (50 feet [15 m] or less) or when a faster flow rate (1 L/min) was used to sample wells that are less than 500 feet (152 m). Further testing is recommended using more sorptive analytes.
Using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we were unable to detect any constituents leaching from any of the tubings used in these studies, even when a slow flow rate was used. This paper contains the results of a laboratory study that was designed to compare sorption of low (mg/L) concentrations of 11 organic solutes by six polymeric materials (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene [ABS], fluorinated ethylene propylene [FEP], fiberglass-reinforced epoxy [FRE] and fiberglass-reinforced plastic [FRP], polyvinyl chloride [PVC], and poly-tetrafluoroethylene [PTFE]).
During this six-week study, ABS sorbed analytes much more rapidly and to a greater extent than did the other materials, and PVC and FRE sorbed analytes more slowly and to a lesser extent than the other materials tested.

This series of experiments was initiated to determine the overall suitability of three alternative polymeric well casing materials (fluorinated ethylene propylene [FEP], fiberglass-reinforced epoxy [FRE], and fiberglass-reinforced plastic [FRP]) for use in ground water monitoring wells and to compare these materials with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) well casings. This paper focuses on sorption and leaching of metals.
Generally, the fiberglass materials leached more metal contaminants than PVC, FEP, and PTFE. However, with one exception (Pb leaching from FRP), leached concentrations were below maximum allowable limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for drinking water. Previous research has shown that the most commonly used well casing materials-stainless steel. polyvinyl chloride (PVC). and polytetra-fluoroethylene (PTFE)-are not suited for all monitoring environments and applications. This study is part of a series of experiments that were conducted to determine the suitability of four other polymeric well casing materials-acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), fluorinalcd ethylene propylene (FHP), fiberglass-reinlorced epoxy (FRE), and fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP)- for use in ground water monitoring wells. In these studies, these four materials were compared with two other commonly used polymeric well casings, PVC and PTFE. Part I of these studies examines the resistance of these materials to degradation by chemicals. Future reports will consider sorption and leaching of organic and metal contaminants.

This was done to simulate the most aggressive environments to which monitoring well casings may be exposed. The casings were observed for changes in weight and signs of physical degradation (swelling, softening, deterioration, or dissolution).
The two fluorinated polymers (FEP and PTFE) were not degraded by any of the lest chemicals. Among the nonfluorinated products tested. FRE was the most inert. Three organic chemicals caused the glass fibers to separate. and two organic solvents caused weight gains exceeding 10 percent. ABS was the most readily degraded material tested. By the end of the study, only the acid and alkaline solutions had little effect on ABS. FRP was more severely degraded by the organic chemicals than FRH but was less affected than PVC. Factors influencing the response of total organic vapor detection instruments used in soil-gas surveying for subsurface gasoline leakage were investigated through performing theoretical assessments and laboratory experiments. Theoretical assessments indicate that total organic vapor measurements will depend on response conditions and the relative concentration of constituents in soil gas, in addition to absolute constituent levels. Laboratory tests conducted using flame ionization, photoionization and explosimeter devices indicated that conditions influencing their responses included instrument flow rate and soil-air permeability when performing direct-probe sampling; the linear range of the instrument; the multicomponent nature of gasoline vapors; and levels of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and relative humidity in soil air. If an instrument's response to these conditions is not taken into account, survey results may be misleading. To circumvent adverse instrument responses, a serial dilution technique is presented. 相似文献

The research task described herein aims at the structuring of an analytical tool that traces the time course of geophysical phenomena, regional or global, and compares it to the course of long-term solar conditions, long-term meaning decades or a few centuries. The model is based on the premise that since in a last analysis the preponderance of atmospheric, hydrospheric, and, possibly, some aspects of geospheric phenomena are, or have been, powered by energy issuing from the sun – either now or in the past, the long-term behavior of such phenomena is ultimately connected to long-term changes occurring in the sun itself. Accordingly, the proposed research firstly derives and models a stable surrogate pattern for the long-term solar activity, secondly introduces a transfer-function algorithm for modeling the connection between the surrogate and terrestrial phenomena viewed as partners in the connection, and thirdly probes the connection outcome for episodic or unanticipated effects that may arise due to the fact that in the present context, the connection, should it exist, is very likely nonlinear. Part I of the study presents the theory of the concept, while Part II demonstrates the concepts pertinence to a number of terrestrial phenomena.This essay has been the basis of two earlier papers, one presented at The 8th International Conference of the European Union of Geosciences in Strasbourg, France, 9–13 April 1995; and the other at The 5th International Conference on Precipitation in Elounda, Crete, Greece, 14–16 June 1995. 相似文献

Simple methods of analysis are developed for computing the dynamic steady-state axial response of floating pile groups embedded in homogeneous and non-homogeneous soil deposits. Physically-motivated approximations are introduced to account for the interaction between two individual piles. It is found that such an interaction arises chiefly from the ‘interference’ of wave fields originating along each pile shaft and spreading outward. For homogeneous deposits the wave fronts originating at an individual pile are cylindrical and the interaction is essentially independent of pile flexibility and slenderness. For non-homogeneous deposits the wave fronts are non-cylindrical and ray-theory approximations are invoked to derive pile flexibility-dependent interaction functions. Results are presented for the dynamic stiffness and damping of several pile groups, as well as for distribution of the applied load among individual piles. For deposits with modulus proportional to depth, the agreement with the few rigorous solutions available is encouraging. A comprehensive parameter study focuses on the effects of soil inhomogeneity and pile-group configuration. It is demonstrated that the ‘dynamic group efficiency’ may far exceed unity at certain frequencies. Increasing soil inhomogeneity tends to reduce the respective resonant peaks and lead to smoother interaction functions, in qualitative agreement with field evidence. 相似文献

Most river cross-sections display some degree of asymmetry for which there is no adequate quantitative definition. Indices of asymmetry are derived using two principles based on areal differences and maximum depth displacement relative to the channel centreline. The indices are assessed firstly by comparing values for a set of constructed channel shapes which are ranked in order of increasing visual asymmetry, and secondly by analysing a series of 50 cross-sections from a small mountain stream. Two indices, A* and A2, are probably the most valuable, and could be used to test and generate hypotheses regarding the related changes to cross-sectional and planimetric form which occur during the transition from a straight to a meandering channel, particularly if parallel measures of flow asymmetry are defined. Structural integrity of well construction, sampling, and remediation materials may be compromised at many hazardous sites by nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) and their dissolved constituents. A literature review of compatibility theory and qualitative field experiences are provided regarding the degradation and corrosion of materials in contact with NAPLs and organic compounds. A chemical compatibility table, compiled from several sources of compatibility testing results, is presented for 73 chemicals and 28 commonly used materials. Several polar contaminants were found in screening analyses of 30 representative surface water samples collected from rivers, lakes, and canals in Berlin. Residues of pharmaceuticals and N-(phenylsulfonyl)-sarcosine originating from various sewage treatment plants effluents were found at concentrations up to the μg/L-level in the surface water, whereas the concentrations of polar pesticides such as dichlorprop and mecoprop were always below 0.1 μg/L. The pharmaceuticals most frequently detected in the surface water samples include clofibric acid, diclofenac, ibuprofen, propiphenazone, and two other drug metabolites. Additional investigations of groundwater wells of a drinking water plant have shown that polar contaminants such as drug residues or N-(phenylsulfonyl)-sarcosine easily leach through the subsoil into the groundwater aquifers when contaminated surface water is used for groundwater recharge in drinking water production. 相似文献

Pore volume compressibility is one of the physical properties of a reservoir that must be specified in many reservoir-engineering
calculations. In the presented research, the effect of compact pressure, temperature and porosity on compressibility was investigated.
A total of twenty-two different cores were tested: five limestone, one friable sandstone, fourteen medium to hard sandstone,
and two very dense sandstone. Core samples were placed in the test cell and subject to compacting pressure up to 10,000 psi.
Runs were made at room temperature and at 52°C for limestone samples.
Although there were some publications concerning measurement and study of the effect of pressure and temperature on pore volume
compressibility of reservoir rocks, nothing has been published about compressibility of Hungarian reservoir rocks, except
of the work of Tóth and Bauer (1988). The present study showed pore volume compressibility data for different Hungarian fields.
The result of the study at high temperature (52°C) shows that pore compressibility increases with increasing temperature. 相似文献

An in-channel surficial depositional feature (surficial fine-grained laminae) composed of loosely bound fine sediment deposited during low flow conditions has often been observed in river systems in south-western Ontario. The physical characteristics of this feature have been determined by a direct observation image analysis system. This sediment consists primarily of flocculated fine-grained material. The size distributions of surficial fine-grained laminae and suspended sediment were not significantly different. Each distribution is bimodal in nature and shows a characteristic grain size deficiency in the 4-5 μm size range. This observation suggests that flocculation and not low discharge or low competence is the dominant mechanism for the formation of surficial fine-grained laminae under conditions of low flow in fluvial systems of south-western Ontario. A quantitative assessment of this feature shows its potential importance as a source of fine-grained sediment and associated contaminants for downstream transport. 相似文献

An attempt has been made to study the toxicity of two commonly used pesticides aldrin (organochlorine) and ethyl-parathion (organophosphorus) to the fish Colisa fasciatus (Anabantidae) and Notopterus notopterus (Notopteridae). During bioassay studies, the behaviour of the fishes was recorded. The aldrin concentration used lies between 0.021 mg/1 and 0.042 mg/1 for C. fasciatus and 0.00056 mg/1 and 0.00135 mg/1 for N. notopterus. The ethyl-parathion concentration used lies between 1.8 mg/1 and 3.7 mg/1 for C. fasciatus and 0.49 mg/1 and 1.00 mg/1 for N. notopterus.
- – The effect of lethal aqueous concentrations of pesticides on the Fishes prior to death are usually manifested by excitation, erratic swimming ability, difficulty in respiration, increasing in ventilation rate, jerky movements of body and fin fast, up- and downward movements, convulsions, loss of equilibrium, loss of the original colour of the body skin and the excess secretion of mucus by the gills and the body wall.
- – the TLm values for 24, 48 and 96 hours of exposition are determined for both species of fish and both pesticides at the following variables:
- ? three levels of temperature,
- ? three levels of dissolved oxygen,
- ? three levels of pH,
- ? three fish sizes.
- – statistical analysis of variance shows, that all variables have a significant effect on the TLm values of both pesticides for both fish species;
- – Aldrin (chlorinated hydrocarbon) is more toxic than ethylparathion (organophosphate) at all variables;
- – Colisa fasciatus is the more resistant species than Notopterus notopterus.
- – the relationship between the total number of the fishes N0, survival numbers N and time t can be expressed by a mathematical formula as:
- – the harmless concentration to C. fasciatus ranged from 0.0049 mg/1 to 0.0161 for aldrin, 0.54 mg/1 to 0.99 mg/1 for ethyl-parathion and to N. notopterus from 0.00012 mg/1 to 0.00045 mg/1 for aldrin, 0.10 mg/1 to 0.21 mg/1 for ethyl-parathion;
- – the aldrin should be diluted at least 4000 times and ethyl-parathion 320 times of its actual concentration.

Recent results of in situ measurements and their interest for a seismic assessment of existing buildings are presented and analysed. The present paper (Part I) is devoted to the experimental programme. The response to ambient vibrations, harmonic excitation and shock loading is recorded on intact buildings but also after their structure or their vicinity was modified. These tests aim to identify the dynamic behaviour of ordinary intact buildings built in a conventional practise. Moreover, taking advantage of their demolition, it was possible (through these tests) to determine the actual influence of the light work elements, full precast facade panels, bearing masonry walls, and the presence of neighbouring joined buildings. These experiments realized on real buildings show that information gathered from ambient measurements provide reliable and efficient data of real interest for a clear understanding of the actual building behaviour.
