Measurements of ultraviolet line fluxes from Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectra of the K2-dwarf ε Eri are reported. These are used to develop new emission measure distributions and semi-empirical atmospheric models for the chromosphere and lower transition region of the star. These models are the most detailed constructed to date for a main-sequence star other than the Sun. New ionization balance calculations, which account for the effect of finite density on dielectronic recombination rates, are presented for carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and silicon. The results of these calculations are significantly different from the standard Arnaud & Rothenflug ion balance, particularly for alkali-like ions. The new atmospheric models are used to place constraints on possible first ionization potential (FIP)-related abundance variations in the lower atmosphere and to discuss limitations of single-component models for the interpretation of certain optically thick line fluxes. 相似文献

The emission measure distribution in the upper transition region and corona of ε Eri is derived from observed emission-line fluxes. Theoretical emission measure distributions are calculated assuming that the radiation losses are balanced by the net conductive flux. We discuss how the area factor of the emitting regions as a function of temperature can be derived from a comparison between these emission measure distributions. It is found that the filling factor varies from ∼0.2 in the mid-transition region to ∼1.0 in the inner corona. The sensitivity of these results to the adopted ion fractions, the iron abundance and other parameters is discussed. The area factors found are qualitatively similar to the observed structure of the solar atmosphere, and can be used to constrain two-component models of the chromosphere. Given further observations, the method could be applied to investigate the trends in filling factors with indicators of stellar activity. 相似文献

Observations of ε Eri (K2 V) have been made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope . The spectra obtained show a number of emission lines which can be used to determine, or place limits on, the electron density and pressure. Values of the electron pressure are required in order to make quantitative models of the transition region and inner corona from absolute line fluxes, and to constrain semi-empirical models of the chromosphere. Using line flux ratios in Si iii and O iv a mean electron pressure of P e = N e T e =4.8×1015 cm−3 K is derived. This value is compatible with the lower and upper limits to P e found from flux ratios in C iii , O v and Fe xii . Some inconsistencies which may be because of small uncertainties in the atomic data used are discussed. 相似文献

We present new high-dispersion spectroscopic data for the Be star ε Cap. The purpose of these data is to study the short-period line profile variations. By using a two-dimensional period-finding technique, we confirm that the photometric period of 0.99 d is present in the helium line profiles. We show that the variations are not easily explained by non-radial pulsation and suggest that corotating circumstellar material is responsible. 相似文献

Spatially resolved, broad Hα line profiles from both the luminous blue variable star ε Carinae (ε Car) and the surrounding filamentary Car II ('Keyhole') nebula, where they have been scattered and reflected by dust, have been observed periodically from 1985 to 1997. The Hα line profiles from ε Car in this 12-yr period show some, albeit not dramatic, changes. The sharp and deep P Cygni-type absorption feature that was observed first in 1985 in the broad, scattered/reflected profiles from the surrounding Keyhole nebula is not present in any of the direct ε Car profiles. This distinctive feature is now shown to be spatially variable over the Keyhole nebula and most prominent along the direction of the axis of the bipolar Homunculus nebula at PA 132°. No evidence of any temporal variability of this sharp feature has been found in 12 yr of monitoring, even from the most well-defined scattering/reflecting cloud along PA 132°.
It is concluded that a 46°-wide cone of light from ε Car is relatively unobscured along the axis of the Homunculus nebula and that this must be the consequence of a dense torus close to the star. 相似文献

Elemental abundances of the early A stars ε Ser, 29 Vul and σ Aqr are derived consistently with previous studies of this series using spectrograms obtained with Reticon and CCD detectors. The derived abundances confirm that ε Ser is a definite Am star. 29 Vul shows evidence for a weakly operating Am star phenomenon. σ Aqr, a hot Am star prototype, has abundances similar to those of o Peg, another class prototype. 相似文献

We present and discuss 247 high dispersion échelle spectra of the δ Scuti star 38 o 1 Eri. We find at least three periods, but all are affected by aliasing problems. We attempt to identify the modes by a technique involving both temporal and spatial pre-whitening. All modes are of high degree, probably ℓ≈4 and ℓ≈7. 相似文献

We report observations of the dwarf star ε Eri (K2 V) made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope . The high sensitivity of the STIS instrument has allowed us to detect the magnetic dipole transitions of Fe xii at 1242.00 and 1349.38 Å for the first time in a star other than the Sun. The width of the stronger line at 1242.00 Å has also been measured; such measurements are not possible for the permitted lines of Fe xii in the extreme-ultraviolet. To within the accuracy of the measurements, the N v and the Fe xii lines occur at their rest wavelengths. Electron densities and linewidths have been measured from other transition region lines. Together, these can be used to investigate the non-thermal energy flux in the lower and upper transition regions, which is useful in constraining possible heating processes. The Fe xii lines are also present in archival STIS spectra of other G/K-type dwarfs. 相似文献

We present results of 548 high-dispersion spectra of the roAp star α Circinus over a five-night period. The pulsational radial velocities measured from the rare-earth elements, Nd iii , Hα and Hβ are easily measured and occur at the photometric period. The amplitude is largest in Nd iii and Hα, is lower in the rare earths and Hβ, and cannot be measured in other metal lines. This behaviour can be understood in terms of an increase of pulsational amplitude with height in the atmosphere coupled with abundance stratification. The radial velocities show a significant variation at the rotational period of 4.463 d and a marginally significant periodicity at a frequency of 8.16 cycle d−1 . The latter may be a very low-amplitude δ Scuti pulsation. 相似文献

We present new multicolour photometry and simultaneous high-dispersion spectroscopy for the δ Scuti star 1 Mon. The two main periodicities in the star are still present, but the third known period is not directly detected in the new radial velocities or light variations. However, it is detected in the periodogram of the second moment of the line profile variations. We use the cross-correlation function as an approximation for the line profile variations. By computing theoretical profiles for a given mode and comparing them with phased cross-correlation profiles, we are able to determine a goodness-of-fit criterion and estimate the most probable spherical harmonic degree, the azimuthal order, m , of the pulsation and also the angle of inclination. We then compare the relative amplitudes and phases of the photometric variations in five wavebands and obtain the best estimates of for the two visible periodicities. We confirm the earlier determinations that the main periodicity is a radial mode and that the other periodicity is probably We show that the line profile variations and light variations give consistent results. We point out the importance of a long wavelength range when using the photometric mode identification technique. Finally, we attempt to match the two periods with unstable modes from linear, non-adiabatic calculations. We are able to show that the principal period is well matched by either the fundamental or first overtone radial mode, but could not find a satisfactory fit to the mode. We discuss implications for mode identification of δ Scuti stars based on what we have learned from this star. 相似文献

We analyse a series of line profile observations of the He i 6678 line in ζ Oph. A period analysis on these data using the mode and moments of the line profile confirms the two previously known periods. We describe a new method of mode identification for pulsating stars in which the calculated profiles are directly fitted to observed profiles. The method yields the full set of pulsational parameters including the spherical harmonic degree, ℓ, and azimuthal number, m . Application of the method to these data confirms the mode identifications previously suggested for the two periodicities. We find that the derived pulsational parameters are physically realistic and conclude that non-radial pulsation is the most likely explanation for the travelling subfeatures. However, a unique mode identification is still not possible – several non-sectorial modes fit the data as well as the usually adopted sectorial identifications. The predicted photometric amplitudes are in good accord with upper limits derived from photometric observations. We conclude that ζ Oph is a star in the β Cep instability strip in which two modes of high degree (probably ℓ=4 and ℓ=8) are excited. We present an interpretation of these findings in which the cause of the low-order line profile and light variations in periodic Be stars is corotating photospheric clouds, while the travelling subfeatures are incidental to the Be phenomenon and are a result of non-radial pulsation. 相似文献
