A GEOGRAPHY OF NONPERMANENT RESIDENCE IN THE U.S.

Factor analysis is used to examine the movement patterns of nonpermanent residents, persons who were living somewhere other than their usual residence on the April 1, 1980 census day. Movement from usual to census residences converges on the Sunbelt states of Florida, Arizona, California, Texas and Louisiana. Movement in the other direction is more dispersed as evidenced by 14 distinct patterns of census to usual residence flows.     

A GEOGRAPHY OF THE VENTURE CAPITAL INDUSTRY IN THE U. S.*

The venture capital industry in the U.S. has important implications for the growth of “high tech”industries and the viability of the small firm sector. Venture capital is provided largely through independent firms, quasi-public Small Business Investment Corporations (SBICs) and corporate subsidiaries. The regional distribution of VC firms has changed over time but New York, Massachusetts, and California account for one-half of the current firms. An analysis of regional flows of VC investment reveals that California, Massachusetts and Texas were the leading recipient states while the Plains region receives the least amount of capital. Given the concentrations of VC activity, a regional mismatch in the supply of and demand for such funds may exist. The investment needs of small firms, the employment impacts of the VC industry, and the matching of VC supply and demand are seen as useful research directions.     

THE GEOGRAPHY OF HOUSING VALUES IN THE TRANSFORMATION TO A MARKET ECONOMY: A CASE STUDY OF MOSCOW

Rapid progress of the market-oriented reform in Russia has led to the emergence of urban housing markets. The intraurban spatial differentiation in market valuation of housing suggests a conceptually new insight into the internal structure of the socialist city. This paper demonstrates that apartment prices in Moscow are largely determined by accessibility to the center of the city, social status of the neighborhood residents, and proximity to certain amenities such as recreational facilities or disamenities such as noxious industries.
