To investigate the environmental dependence of u ‐, g ‐, r ‐, i ‐, and z ‐band luminosities, we perform comparative studies of luminosity distributions between galaxy members of compact groups (CGs) and isolated galaxies. It is found that for the r, i, and z bands isolated galaxies have a higher proportion of faint galaxies and a lower proportion of luminous galaxies than galaxy members of CGs, but for the u band an opposite trend is observed. The correlation between the g ‐band luminosity and the environment has different trends in different luminosity regions (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) 相似文献

Using two volume‐limited Main galaxy samples of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6) with the luminosity –20.0 ≤ Mr ≤ –18.5 and –22.40 ≤ Mr ≤–20.16, we have explored the environmental dependence of the fractions of red star‐forming and blue passive galaxies. It is found that the fractions of red star‐forming and blue passive galax‐ies decline mildly with increasing local density in the luminous volume‐limited sample, but in the faint volume‐limited sample these fractions rise slightly with increasing local density except that the fraction of red star‐forming decreases with density in the densest regime. Only according to statistical results of this study, it is difficult to reach the conclusion: there is an environmental dependence for color beyond that for star formation activities or for star formation activities beyond that for color. In this condition, we preferentially believe that star formation activities and color possiblely have equally strong environmental dependence. In the faint volume‐limited sample, we observe that the fraction of star‐forming galaxies‐the density relation has a “critical density” at the projected local density PLD ≈ 1 h–2 Mpc–2: below this density the fraction of star‐forming galaxies is high and nearly constant, while above this density this fraction drops rapidly. Thus, it is possible that in the densest regime of the faint volume‐limited sample, there is an environmental dependence for star formation activities beyond that for color, which leads to the fraction of red star‐forming decreasing with density in the densest regime of the faint volume‐limited sample (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Using the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we investigate the environmental dependence of stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR) and specific star formation rate (SSFR) of LRGs. It is found that stellar mass of LRGs nearly is independent of local environments, and that the environmental dependence of SFR and SSFR in the LRG sample is much weaker than the one in the Main galaxy sample. One possible explanation is that galaxy color and morphology are a pair of galaxy properties most predictive of local environments, while LRGs are a group of galaxies that are likely to be luminous, red and of early types (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. This paper is the first of two dedicated to the application of a two-dimensional (2D) fit to the light distribution of 73 early-type galaxies belonging to the Virgo and Fornax clusters, a sample of which is 80 per cent complete, volume and magnitude limited down to M B =−17.3 , and highly homogeneous. Two empirical models of the surface-brightness distribution of the early-type galaxies have been tested: the first uses a single spheroid represented by the r 1/ n Sersic law, while the second is characterized by two components, 'bulge' and 'disc', by means of the ( r 1/ n +exp) laws. The χ 2 fitting routine ( minuit ), used to fit the 2D light distribution of real galaxies, is tested here on artificial galaxy images that were built with structural parameters chosen randomly from a large fixed interval. In this paper we present the properties of the two models, describe the minimization technique, and discuss the results of the tests of the 2D fit obtained from simulated artificial galaxies. By exploiting these tests we were able better to constrain the errors affecting the structural parameters, and the strategies that should be adopted to get the best fit. 相似文献

We use a sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to search for correlations between the λ spin parameter and the environment and mass of galaxies. In order to calculate the total value of λ for each observed galaxy, we employed a simple model of the dynamical structure of the galaxies, which allows a rough estimate of the value of λ using only readily obtainable observables from the luminous galaxies. Use of a large volume-limited sample (upwards of 11 000) allows reliable inferences of mean values and dispersions of λ distributions. We find, in agreement with some N -body cosmological simulations, no significant dependence of λ on the environmental density of the galaxies. For the case of mass, our results show a marked correlation with λ, in the sense that low-mass galaxies present both higher mean values of λ and associated dispersions, than high-mass galaxies. These results provide interesting constrain on the mechanisms of galaxy formation and acquisition of angular momentum, a valuable test for cosmological models. 相似文献

In this study, I attempt to apply for a new statistical method and investigate the environmental dependence of stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersion in the CMASS sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 9 (SDSS DR9). I divide the CMASS sample with redshifts 0.44 ≤ z ≤ 0.59 into many subsamples with a redshift binning size of Δz = 0.01, and analyze the environmental dependence of stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersion of subsamples in each redshift bin. It is found that stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersions of CMASS galaxies are very weakly correlated with the local environment. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) 相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine the fractions of different spiral galaxy types, especially bulgeless disks, from a complete and homogeneous sample of 15 127 edge‐on disk galaxies extracted from the sixth data release from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The sample is divided in broad morphological classes and sub types consisting of galaxies with bulges, intermediate types and galaxies which appear bulgeless. A small fraction of disky irregulars is also detected. The morphological separation is based on automated classification criteria which resemble the bulge sizes and the flatness of the disks. Each of these broad classes contains about 1/3 of the total sample. Using strict criteria for selecting pure bulgeless galaxies leads to a fraction of 15% of simple disk galaxies. We compare this fraction to other galaxy catalogs and find an excellent agreement of the observed frequency of bulgeless galaxies. Although the fraction of simple disk galaxies in this study does not represent a “cosmic” fraction of bulgeless galaxies, it shows that the relative abundance of pure disks is comparable to other studies and offers a profound value of the frequency of simple disks in the local Universe. This fraction of simple disks emphasizes the challenge for formation and evolution models of disk galaxies since these models are hard pressed to explain the observed frequency of these objects (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Broad-band V , R and I and narrow-band H α CCD surface photometry of a sample of 24 active and three normal nearby galaxies is presented, in order to study their morphological and structural properties. This first paper presents the observations, data reduction and processing techniques used; the main characteristics of the central regions of the sample galaxies are derived from broad-band and H α images; broad-band surface brightness and colour profiles are presented; based on the inspection of individual images and the examination of the radial variation of ellipticity and polar angle, the morphological class of the sample objects is revised: several objects previously classified as non-barred or unclassified are found to be barred galaxies. A high fraction (∼71 per cent) of the objects that present any kind of nuclear activity are barred. This proportion is even higher (∼87 per cent) if only Seyfert galaxies are considered. This result can reinforce the clues about the connection between bars and nuclear activity as a fuelling mechanism that can trigger and sustain nuclear activity. 相似文献

We measure the B -band optical luminosity function (LF) for galaxies selected in a blind H i survey. The total LF of the H i selected sample is flat, with Schechter parameters and , in good agreement with LFs of optically selected late-type galaxies. Bivariate distribution functions of several galaxy parameters show that the H i density in the local Universe is more widely spread over galaxies of different size, central surface brightness and luminosity than the optical luminosity density is. The number density of very low surface brightness (LSB ) (>24.0 mag arcsec−2 ) gas-rich galaxies is considerably lower than that found in optical surveys designed to detect dim galaxies. This suggests that only a part of the population of LSB galaxies is gas-rich and that the rest must be gas-poor. However, we show that this gas-poor population must be cosmologically insignificant in baryon content. The contribution of gas-rich LSB galaxies (>23.0 mag arcsec−2 ) to the local cosmological gas and luminosity density is modest and per cent respectively); their contribution to Ωmatter is not well-determined, but probably <11 per cent. These values are in excellent agreement with the low redshift results from the Hubble Deep Field. 相似文献

The evolution of galaxies in groups may have important implications for the evolution of the star formation history of the Universe, since many processes which operate in groups may suppress star formation and the fraction of galaxies in bound groups grows rapidly between z = 1 and the present day. In this paper, we present an investigation of the properties of galaxies in galaxy groups at intermediate redshift ( z ∼ 0.4) . The groups were selected from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Redshift Survey (CNOC2) redshift survey as described by Carlberg et al., with further spectroscopic follow-up undertaken at the Magellan telescope in order to improve the completeness and depth of the sample. We present the data for the individual groups, and find no clear trend in the fraction of passive galaxies with group velocity dispersion and group concentration. We stack the galaxy groups in order to compare the properties of group galaxies with those of field galaxies at the same redshift. The groups contain a larger fraction of passive galaxies than the field, this trend being particularly clear for galaxies brighter than M B J < −20 in the higher velocity dispersion groups. In addition, we see evidence for an excess of bright passive galaxies in the groups relative to the field. In contrast, the luminosity functions of the star-forming galaxies in the groups and the field are consistent. These trends are qualitatively consistent with the differences between group and field galaxies seen in the local Universe. 相似文献
