Hydrothermal alteration of Tertiary gabbros from Skye involved the reaction of igneous olivine, augite, hypersthene, plagioclase, magnetite, and ilmenite with aqueous fluid primarily to combinations of talc, chlorite, montmorillonite, calcic amphibole, biotite, and secondary magnetite. Lesser amounts of calcite, epidote, quartz, sphene, prehnite, and garnet also developed. During mineralogical alteration of gabbro there was a net addition to rock of K, Na, Sr, and H2O and a net loss of Mg. Gabbro was oxidized early in the hydrothermal event and later reduced. Iron and silicon were probably initially lost and later added. There is no evidence for significant change in the Al or Ca content of the gabbros. Hydrothermal alteration of Skye gabbro involved not only large-scale migration of 18O, 16O, D and H but also of K, Na, Sr, Mg, and probably Fe and Si.Mineral thermometry indicates that pyroxenes in the gabbros crystallized at 1000° C–1150° C and were very resistent chemically as well as isotopically to later hydrothermal alteration. Hypothetical equilibrium between primary and secondary mafic silicates suggests that mineralogical alteration of gabbro occurred at 450°–550° C. The lack of correlation between mineralogical and isotopic alteration of gabbro requires that much isotopic alteration occurred at temepratures above those at which the secondary minerals developed, 550°–1000° C. The chemical alteration of gabbro is correlated with its mineralogical alteration and therefore occurred at 450°–550° C.Measured progress of the mineral-fluid reactions was used to estimate the amount of H2O fluid that infiltrated the gabbro as primary olivine was converted to talc+magnetite at 525°–550° C. Calculated fluid-rock ratios are in the range 0.2–6 (volume basis) and are smaller than values estimated from isotopic data (fluid/rock 1–10, volume basis). Both isotopic and petrologic data point to pervasive flow of fluid through crystalline rock at elevated temperatures of 500°–1000° C. Isotopic fluid-rock ratios are larger than petrologic fluid-rock ratios because isotopic alteration of cooling gabbro began earlier and at higher temperatures than did the mineralogical alteration.  相似文献

Alkali olivine basalts from Skye were simultaneously contact metamorphosed by Tertiary gabbro and granite intrusions and altered by the hydrothermal convection system that the plutons induced. Four metamorphic zones were mapped around the plutons. Furthest from the intrusions, in the primary olivine zone, metabasalts are composed of combinations of igneous olivine, augite, plagioclase, titaniferous magnetite, ilmenite, zeolites, gyrolite, sulfides, and chlorite-smectite intergrowths. Closer to the plutons, in the smectite zone, saponite and carbonate appear, primary olivine and gyrolite disappear, and zeolites decrease dramatically in abundance. Still closer to the plutons, in the amphibole zone, actinolite, edenite, chlorite, sphene, epidote, andradite, and quartz appear and saponite and chlorite-smectite intergrowths disappear. Along parts of the contact between gabbro and basalt, in the orthopyroxeneolivine zone, orthopyroxene, metamorphic olivine, and biotite appear and amphibole, chlorite, sphene, epidote, andradite, carbonate, and quartz disappear. Whole-rock chemical data indicate only minor change in the major-element chemical composition of the metabasalts during progressive metamorphism/hydrothermal alteration. Two-pyroxene eothermometry and various mineral-fluid equilibria suggest the range of peak temperatures attained in the metamorphic zones: orthopyroxene-olivine zone, 900°1, 030° C; amphibole zone, 400°–900° C; smectite and primary olivine zones, < 400° C. Mineralogical and oxygen isotopic alteration of the metabasalts were closely coupled: Basalts from the primary olivine zone with nearly unaltered igneous mineralogies have normal or near-normal wholerock 18O>+5 (SMOW); mineralogically more altered basalts from the smectite zone have whole-rock 18O=+2 to +5; still more mineralogically altered basalts from the amphibole zone (with one exception) have 18O<+ 2; completely recrystallized hornfelses from the orthopyroxene-olivine zone have 18O<0. The principal mechanism of isotope exchange between basalt and metamorphic/ hydrothermal fluid probably was heterogeneous mineralfluid reaction.Metabasalts from the orthopyroxene-olivine zone are mineralogically fresh pyroxene hornfelses that record crystallization temperatures > 1,000° C yet have highly altered whole-rock oxygen isotope compositions, 18O<0%. The hornfelses chemically interacted with metamorphic/hydrothermal fluids either at very high temperatures or while they were heated to > 1,000° C or both. Their mineralogy, however, rules out significant water-rock interaction after they cooled below 900° C. Hydrothermal convection on Skye was a two-stage process: (a) fluid flow through wall rocks initially was pervasive while they are heated; (b) fluid flow after the thermal peak in the wall rocks was sufficiently channelized that rocks such as those in the orthopyroxeneolivine zone were isolated from further fluid-rock interaction during all or almost all of the cooling history of the hydrothermal system.  相似文献

New Pb isotope analyses are reported for forty-seven basic, intermediate and acid Tertiary igneous rocks from the Isle ofSkye and adjacent regions of northwest Scotland. New Sr isotopeanalyses and two Rb/Sr isochron dates are also reported forthe acid igneous rocks. These results are combined with publishedSr and Nd isotope data for Tertiary igneous rocks from Skyeand adjacent regions in order to examine the genesis and evolutionof Tertiary magmas in the Isle of Skye. Pb isotope analyses form a linear array on a Pb/Pb isochrondiagram, with a slope yielding an apparent age of 2920 ±70m.y. (2), interpreted as a mixing line between ca. 2900 m.y.-oldcrustal Pb and 60 m.y.-old mantle-derived Pb. Combined isotopicdata support a model of selective crustal Pb, Sr and Nd contaminationof basic and intermediate mantle-derived magmas, without significantmodification of major-element composition. This contaminationprocess is probably due to the breakdown of LIL-element-enrichedaccessory mineral phases, and does not necessarily produce linearmixing lines on isotope ratio plots of different elements. SkyeRedhills epigranites contain a predominant fraction of acidmagma which differentiated from mantle-derived basic precursors, and a subsidiary fraction of upper crustal melt. The proportionof this melt is estimated to rise from less than 10 per centin the older granites to around 30 per cent in the younger. Isotopic and geochemical data are used to draw conclusions aboutthe differentiation histories of the four principal magma typesof Skye: the Fe-rich and Fe-poor members of the Skye Main LavaSeries, Preshal Mhor Basalts and Redhills epigranites.  相似文献

Chrome-spinels from the layered Peridotilte Series of the unmetamorphosed, anorogenic 60 Ma Cuillin Igneous Complex, Isle of Skye, display a wide variety of compositions. Cumulus (within seams) chrome-spinels from the lowest exposed portion of the Peridotite Series exhibit features indicative of textural equilibrium, are rich in Al and Mg, and have low values of the ratio Cr/(Cr+Al). Cumulus chrome-spinels from higher up in the series are different from these: particularly, textural disequilibrium is evident, intercumulus plagioclase and olivine are present, and the chrome-spinels are rich in Cr, Fe and Ti, with high values of the ratio Cr/(Cr+Al). Intercumulus (dispersed) chrome-spinels tend towards anhedral forms and define enrichment trends towards Fe (both Fe2+ and Fe3+) with decreasing Mg, Cr and Al, and towards Al, with decreasing Fe2+ and Cr (and increasing Mg). Individual crystals are completely homogeneous and are devoid of reaction rims. The observed textural characteristics and compositional data of the chrome-spinels documented here suggest that the semi-quantitative peritectic reaction: aluminous chrome-spinel + meltplagioclase + olivine + chromian chrome-spinel, is responsible for the observed parageneses, and that both the environment of crystallization (eumulus or intercumulus) and the role of plagioclase ±olivine crystallization are critical parameters for this geochemical trend in spinels within upper crustal magmatic systems. The effects of pyroxene crystallization on the development of this geochemical trend are also considered. This investigation highlights the need to consider the role of post-cumulus mineral-melt reactions and their influences upon the final compositions of major oxide and silicate phases within layered intrusions.  相似文献

The Broadford Beds comprise a basal carbonate-dominated unit overlain by dark muddy sandstones and an upper cross-bedded sandstone unit. The limestones include coralliferous and oolitic lithologies and the sandstones include pisolitic berthierine ironstones and abundant phosphate nodules. The Broadford Beds have a maximum thickness of 140 m and can be subdivided into 17 parasequences, each initiated by an approximately 20 m rise in relative sea level. Marine flooding surfaces are most readily recognized in the lower parts of the succession, where diagenetic data can be utilized to locate emergence surfaces. There is no diagenetic evidence of early emergence in the upper parts of the sequence, but a variety of sedimentological data can be used to identify parasequence boundaries. Deposition of the Broadford Beds occurred largely around the shores of a number of islands in the northern Hebridean area. These islands partly isolated the Skye–Applecross area from a deeper marine basin to the west, and this may have enhanced the formation of authigenic phosphates and iron silicates. It is possible to use the regional variability of parasequence thicknesses to investigate the role of active local tectonism in governing differential subsidence and sediment supply.  相似文献

The isotopic abundance of strontium has been measured in representativerock-types from the Tertiary igneous suite in the Isle of Skye,north-west Scotland. The isotopic abundance of Sr87, expressedas the Sr87/Sr86 ratio, for twelve basalts, dolerites, gabbros, and peridotites is 0.7058?0.0010. On the other hand, the averageinitial Sr87/Sr86 ratio for one granite from the Eastern RedhillsComplex and for three granites from the Western Redhills Complexis 0.7124?0.0015. The three principal members of the marscoitesuite of the Western Redhills Centre, namely, ferrodiorite, porphyritic felsite, and marscoite, also have significantlyhigher initial Sr87/Sr86 ratios than the basaltic rocks. Itis concluded that the rocks with high initial ratios were derivedfrom a source with significantly higher Rb/Sr ratio than thatof the basaltic rocks. The hypothesis which is most in accordwith the isotopic evidence is that the granitic rocks and themarscoite suite were produced by partial melting of ancientLewisian rocks, which form the underlying basement at no greatdepth in this area. Rb—Sr (and K-Ar) age determinations were carried out onsome representative rocks from the Eastern and Western RedhillsCentres. It was not possible to establish a significant agedifference between any of the rock units from either Centres. The mean age is 54?3 m.y. and suggests that intrusion of thegranitic rocks of Skye occurred during a relatively short periodof time within the Lower or Middle Eocene peroid.  相似文献

The Skye igneous centre, forming part of the British Tertiarymagmatic province, developed over a 7 Myr period (61–54Ma) and is characterized by a complex suite of lavas, hypabyssaland intrusive rocks of picritic to granitic composition. Theintrusion of magma from mantle to crust at 2x10–3km3/yr(6 Mt/yr) advected magmatic heat of roughly 0·2 GW averagedover the period of magmatism supporting an ‘excess’heat flux of about 130 mW/m2, or about twice the present-dayaverage continental heat flow. The volume of new crust generatedat Skye (15000 km3) spread over the present-day area of Skyecorresponds to 9 km of new crust. The geochemical evolutionof the Skye magmatic system is constrained using the Energy-ConstrainedRecharge, Assimilation, and Fractional Crystallization (EC-RAFC)model to understand variations in the Sr- and Pb-isotopic andSr trace-element composition of the exposed magmatic rocks withtime. The character (composition and specific enthalpy) of bothassimilant and recharge magma appears to change systematicallyup-section, suggesting that the magma reservoirs migrated toprogressively shallower levels as the system matured. The modelof the magma transport system that emerges is one in which magmabatches are stored initially at lower-crustal levels, wherethey undergo RAFC evolution. Residual magma from this stagethen migrates to shallower levels, where mid-crustal wall rockis assimilated; the recharge magma at this level is characterizedby an increasingly crustal signature. For some of the stratigraphicallyyoungest rocks, the data suggest that the magma reservoirs ascendedinto, and interacted with, upper-crustal Torridonian metasediments. Geomorphological mapping of southern Skye indicates evidence for a single readvance of locally-nourished glaciers. These comprised a major icefield that occupied c. 155 km2 of the main mountain area, a small icefield c. 10 km2 in extent in the Kyleakin hills and ten corrie glaciers with a total area of c. 16 km2. The absence of Lateglacial pollen sites, shorelines and periglacial features within the limits of local glaciation implies a Loch Lomond Readvance age for this glacial event. The area-weighted mean equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of the reconstructed Loch Lomond Readvance glaciers (319 m) conforms with a regional eastwards rise in ELAs that indicates dominant westerly airstreams during the Loch Lomond Stadial. An easterly decline in ELAs across the former icefields is interpreted in terms of easterly transfer of snow across ice-sheds by westerly winds, though the altitudes of corrie glacier ELAs suggest that the dominant snow-bearing winds were southerlies. Calculations based on the area-weighted mean ELA for the major icefield (308 m) indicate a stadial mean July sea-level temperature of c. 6 °C. The anomalously low gradients of certain former icefield outlet glaciers are attributed to deformation of subglacial sediment, an effect that may vitiate the assumption of linear ablation/accumulation gradients in the calculation of former ELAs for reconstructed glaciers.  相似文献

The contact aureole developed in siliceous carbonates surrounding the Beinn an Dubhaich granite, Skye, shows textural and stable isotope evidence for infiltration of aqueous fluids during both prograde and retrograde metamorphism. Strongly depleted isotope compositions of reaction-product calcite correlate with high silica and fluorine contents, demonstrating a strong link between isotopic alteration and metasomatism by fluids with a significant magmatic component, even at the margins of the aureole. The oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of the carbonates form a linear cluster with a positive slope of about five, consistent with the depletion of isotope compositions by the infiltration of magmatic and/or meteoric fluids. Rayleigh fractionation during devolatilization played a minor role in determining the final isotope composition. Stable isotope compositions of coexisting calcite–dolomite pairs show varying amounts of isotopic disequilibrium, which correlate with the inferred fluid infiltration mechanism. Much of the calcite in dolostones is the product of infiltration-driven reactions along fractures, and is greatly depleted isotopically relative to the host dolomite, especially at talc grade. At higher grades the calcite–dolomite fractionation is smaller, probably due to both increased fluid–rock interaction and a greater tendency for fluid infiltration to be pervasive on the grain-scale. Limestones generally show near-equilibrium fractionation of oxygen and carbon owing to the overwhelming compositional influence of the host calcite. Veins formed during late-stage hydrothermal circulation have strongly 18O-depleted compositions relative to the host rock. No small-scale spatial patterns to the isotopic depletion were observed, but the extent of fluid infiltration was greatest in the west of the aureole. Fluid infiltration was clearly highly heterogeneous, with no evidence of a consistent flow direction. It is not possible to determine fluid fluxes or flow directions from one-dimensional flow models based on continuum flow in the Beinn an Dubhaich aureole.  相似文献

This paper presents a major revision of the Late Devensian Lateglacial environmental history of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, based upon a combination of geomorphological, biostratigraphical and radiocarbon evidence. The distribution of glacial and periglacial landforms, and of raised shorelines, suggests that there was only one extensive readvance of local glaciers in southern Skye following the wastage of the Late Devensian ice sheet. Pollen-stratigraphic evidence from 10 sites inside and 4 sites outside the mapped ice limits indicates that this readvance occurred during the Loch Lomond Stadial. At that time over 180km2 of the uplands of south-central Skye were covered by glacier ice, a much more extensive glaciation than previously envisaged. Palynological evidence from four Lateglacial profiles implies that degree of exposure to strong westerly winds was the principal factor determing vegetational contrasts on the island, and that regional differences in vegetational type were less pronounced than has hitherto been suggested. The glacial and palaeobotanical reconstructions reported here are more compatible with Lateglacial data from the Scottish mainland and Hebridean islands than were the previously-published accounts for the Isle of Skye.  相似文献

Highly turbid alkali feldspars from the Loch Ainort granite (59 Ma), Isle of Skye, have been analysed using the 40Ar-39Ar method to obtain chronological and chemical (K, Cl, Br, I) information concerning their origin and hydrothermal alteration. Three methods of gas extraction have been applied to neutron-irradiated samples: laser probe spot fusion of feldspars, in vacuo crushing of a feldspar/quartz separate, and laser stepped heating of the crushed residue. Apparent ages obtained by laser probe spot fusion are mostly similar to the 59 Ma intrusion age. Analyses of relatively pristine regions give some high apparent ages (>59 Ma) indicating the presence of small amounts of 40ArE (excess 40Ar). Crushing releases significant amounts of 40ArE, but is dominated by an 40ArA (atmospheric 40Ar) component. 84Kr/36Ar values obtained by crushing are higher than air and are consistent with air equilibration with fresh water at low temperature 20°C). Therefore, 40ArA was most probably introduced as palaeoatmospheric argon dissolved in the circulating hydrothermal fluids that interacted with the granite, thus supporting a meteoric origin for the fluids. Stepped heating gives a flat age spectrum and an age of 56±4 Ma. Crushing and stepped heating both released significant amounts of halogens with high Br/Cl and I/Cl ratios; excess Xe is also present as indicated by the high 132Xe/36Ar values. It seems likely that the halogen (and possibly Xe) enrichments resulted from interaction of the meteoric fluids with Jurassic sedimentary country rocks.  相似文献

Detailed litho‐ and biostratigraphical analyses from three coastal sites in contrasting coastal settings on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK, reveal evidence for several changes in relative sea level during the Late Devensian and Holocene. At the start of the record, relative sea level in the area was high at ca. 12 500 14C (ca. 14 800 cal.) yr BP but then fell, reaching a low point during the Younger Dryas, at ca. 11 000–10 000 14C (ca. 13 000–11 600 cal.) yr BP, when a rock platform, correlated with the Main Rock Platform, was formed. In the early–middle Holocene, relative sea level was rising by ca. 8000 14C (ca. 8800 cal.) yr BP and in northeast Skye a lagoonal surface, correlated with the Main Postglacial Shoreline, was formed at ca. 6600 14C (ca. 7500 cal.) yr BP. By the late Holocene, relative sea level was again falling, but a rise, registered at at least two sites, began probably before ca. 4000 14C (ca. 4500 cal.) yr BP, and a second lagoonal surface in northeast Skye, correlated with the Blairdrummond Shoreline, was formed, although by ca. 3000 14C (ca. 3200 cal.) yr BP relative sea level in the area had resumed its downward trend. The pattern of relative sea‐level changes disclosed is compared with evidence elsewhere in Scotland. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Most of the flows in the Palaeocene lava pile remnant of Skyeare members of the Skye Main Lava Series (SMLS), comprisingtransitional basalts and two associated suites of evolved lavas. The first suite evolves through Fe-rich hawaiites and mugearitesto benmoreites, and the second suite evolves through Fe-poorintermediates to trachytes. Ca-rich, alkali-poor olivine tholeiites(the Preshal Mhor magma type) occur as sparse flows in the stratigraphicallyhighest parts of the lava pile remnant and are abundant in thedyke swarm transecting it. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios rangingfrom 0.70308 to 0.70571 in 45 SMLS samples show no significantcorrelation with degree of zeolitization (H2O+), silica saturation,or 87Rb/86Sr. A moderately good negative correlation with totalSr confirms published Pb-isotope evidence of interaction withancient, sialic crust. Details of the (87Sr/86Sr)l versus Srpattern are consistent with previous hypotheses that the SMLSbasalt-benmoreite suite evolved at a depth near the Moho, whilstthe low-Fe trend to trachyte resulted from near-surface basaltfractionation. (87Sr/86Sr)l values ranging from 0.70307 to 0.70621 for PreshalMhor basalts show a strong positive correlation with total Sr,consistent with a model of extensive fractionation within theupper crust of a mantle-derived low 87Sr/86Sr-low Sr magma, which became progressively contaminated with comparatively radiogeniccrustal Sr. The lowest measured (87Sr/86Sr)l values of 0.70307and 0.70308, for a Preshal Mhor basalt and for an SMLS basaltrespectively, are consistent with the hypothesis that thesetwo magma types were produced by successive phases of partialmelting from a single volume of upper mantle. (87Sr/86Sr)l values for additional miscellaneous basaltic lavas, dykes and major intrusives from Skye and from nearby Isle ofMull exhibit considerable variability within the range 0.7038to 0.7072, whilst three basaltic dykes from Northern Englandare in the range 0.7089 to 0.7123. The latter values overlapwith published (87Sr/86Sr)l values for some of the granitesin the Tertiary Province of northwest Scotland and indirectlyremove objections based on Sr-isotopic arguments to the genesisof the granites by fractionation of basalt contaminated withcrustal Sr, but neither prove this nor disprove large-scalecrustal partial fusion.  相似文献

The range of genetic and climatic interpretations of Scottish ‘hummocky moraine’ is reviewed, and new data are presented from the Isle of Skye, western Scotland, which are used as the basis of a genetic classification. ‘Hummocky moraine’ on Skye is shown to consist of three principal sediment-landform associations: (1) recessional moraines; (2) chaotic ice-stagnation moraines; and (3) drumlins and fluted moraines. The recessional moraines consist of transverse moraine ridges and chains of mounds, and were formed by a combination of glaciotectonics and debris accumulation at active ice margins. Second, chaotic moraines consist of randomly-distributed hummocks, mounds and rim-ridges and record deposition in contact with inactive ice. Finally, drumlins and fluted moraines are longitudinally-oriented subglacial bedforms formed by a combination of lodgement and sediment deformation. Individual occurrences of ‘hummocky moraine’ may comprise one, two or all of these associations. The detailed study and differentiation of Scottish ‘hummocky moraine’ provides a valuable source of information on former glacier dynamics and landscape change.  相似文献

The xenolithic Tertiary ultrabasic dykes of south-west Skyeare composed principally of forsteritic olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene with accessory chrome spinel and magnetite. The plagioclase: pyroxene ratios are relatively constant withineach dyke but the absolute amounts of these minerals are dependenton the olivine content which varies, often considerably, acrossthe dykes. Five main types of olivine distribution are recordedfrom the dykes and in all five there is a concentration of olivinecrystals towards the centre of the dyke. The average size ofthe olivine crystals also varies across the dykes with increasesin size generally corresponding to increases in the olivinecontent. The petrogenetic hypothesis of composite intrusion previouslyproposed for these dykes by Bowen (1928) is re-examined andfound to be inadequate. It is suggested that the dykes, whichwere intruded as magmatic suspensions of olivine crystals androck fragments, are unlikely to have been differentiated intheir present positions and the possibility that the differentiationoccurred during their emplacement is examined. It is shown thatthe mineral distributions and crystal size variations occurringin the dykes are, on the whole, analogous to those expectedto arise during laminar flow in vertical conduits, and it isconcluded that flow differentiation occurred during the intrusionof the ultrabasic dykes of south-west Skye. 1Present address:Department of Geology,University of Toronto,Toronto5,Ontario,Canada.  相似文献

New relative sea-level (RSL) data constrain the timing and magnitude of RSL changes in the southern Isle of Skye following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). We identify a marine limit at ~23 m OD, indicating RSL ~20 m above present c. 15.1 ka. Isolation basin data, supported by terrestrial and marine limiting dates, record an RSL fall to 11.59 m above present by c. 14.2 ka. This RSL fall occurs across the time of global Meltwater Pulse 1A, supporting recent research on the sources of ice melting. Our new data also help to resolve some of the chronological issues within the existing Isle of Skye RSL record and provide details of the sub-Arctic marine environment associated with the transition into Devensian Lateglacial climate at c. 14.5 k cal a bp , and the timing of changes in response to the Loch Lomond Stadial climate. Glacio-isostatic adjustment (GIA) model predictions of RSL deviate from the RSL constraints and reflect uncertainties in local and global ice models used within the GIA models. An empirical RSL curve provides a target for future research.  相似文献

Major and trace element analyses and strontium isotope ratios are presented for twenty-four samples of lavas and plugs from the early Tertiary lava pile in Mull. The samples were selected on the basis of petrographic freshness from a large collection from outside the hydrothermally altered zone of pneumatolysis which occupies the central region of the volcanic complex. Most of the analyses yield normative hypersthene and we argue that these are essentially unaltered magmatic compositions. The analytical data indicate that the samples may be divided into three groups on the basis of major element chemistry, initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and correlations between lithophile element contents. Group I comprises an alkaline series (basalt-hawaiite-mugearite) with extremely low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7030) and generally low lithophile element contents. Apart from their alkalinity and high Sr and Zr contents these samples have affinities with abyssal tholeiites. Group II contains hypersthene normative basalts with more tholeiitic characteristics but (as in the case of the Skye Main Lava Series) the more evolved rocks are trachytes. This group is characterized by more normal levels of lithophile element concentrations and relatively high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of about 0.7055. Group III is less clearly defined and contains basalts that are generally sparsely olivine-phyric and in most chemical respects fall between Group I and Group II-including initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7033 to 0.7043). They may represent mixtures of Group I and Group II type sources or magmas. Groups I and II appear to be similar, respectively, to the relatively sodic iron-rich and the relatively potassic ironpoor silica enrichment trends distinguished in the Skye Main Lava Series. In the Group I magma series the behaviour of Y and Sr relative to other incompatible elements can only be explained by differential partial melting of a deep garnet-lherzolite mantle source. Fractional crystallization has undoubtedly occurred at some stage during the ascent of these magmas from the mantle, as indicated by the behaviour of Ni and Cr, but has not been a major factor in the production of evolved magma compositions. The Group II magmas appear to have originated from a source more enriched in lithophile elements, and a relatively shallow (< 50 km) plagioclase-lherzolite mantle source is suggested for these magmas because they have Sr/Ba ratios between one and two orders of magnitude lower than those characteristic of Group I. Rb-Sr systematics suggest that the vertical heterogeneity of the mantle which was largely responsible for the chemical differences between these three groups may have existed for a very long time prior to Tertiary magmatism.  相似文献

Oxygen isotope compositions of whole rock specimens and mineral separates from the Cuillins Gabbro Complex, Isle of Skye, Scotland, are employed to determine the patterns and processes of18O depletion in the Outer Unlayered Gabbro (OUG) and associated dikes. Whole rock 18O values range from +4.8 to –1.1 (SMOW) and dike 18O values range from +4.7 to –2.8 Mineral separates from three OUG samples yield 18O values from +5.3 to +4.8 for augite and +4.1 to +0.8 for plagioclase. An early, small-scale hydrothermal circulation system was initiated by the OUG prior to the large-scale hydrothermal convection established by the later Layered Cuillins Complex (LCC). Dikes were emplaced in the OUG after intrusion of the LCC and had only a minor effect on hydrothermal circulation in the OUG. There is evidence of enhanced fluid flow along dike/gabbro contacts. Isotopic compositions of augite separates demonstrate a normal 18O value for the OUG magma with all18O depletion in the OUG due to subsolidus exchange processes including diffusion and surface reaction. The mineral separates yield a pattern of18O depletion consistent with a diffusion mechanism, the bulk of the exchange having occurred in the plagioclase. Secondary mineral formation played a subordinate role in the18O depletion of the OUG. The calculated water to rock mass ratio necessary to effect the observed18O depletion in the OUG is on the order of 0.2, although a much greater amount of water circulation probably occurred. The cooling duration required to explain the measured18O depletion in the OUG by diffusion is very short (140 years at 750° C, 2400 years at 550° C) compared to the duration necessary for pure conductive cooling (105 to 106 years). Rapid local cooling rates in the OUG due to meteoric water convection are consistent with the observed18O depletion in OUG samples.  相似文献

The Eastern Layered Intrusion of the Rum Layered Suite comprisespaired peridotite and allivalite (troctolite and gabbro) layersforming 16 macro-rhythmic units. Whereas the majority of thesemacro-units are believed to have formed by a process of crystal–liquiddifferentiation involving successive accumulation of crystalsfrom multiple picritic replenishments of the chamber, the Unit9 peridotite is interpreted as a layer-parallel picrite intrusion.Closely correlated with this discontinuous peridotite body isa distinctive feature generally known as the Wavy Horizon, whichdivides the overlying allivalite into a lower troctolite andan upper gabbro along a well-defined undulating contact. Wepropose that the Wavy Horizon is a metasomatic feature formedconsequent to the removal of clinopyroxene from an originalgabbroic mush. Foundering of the mush into the picritic sillresulted in the replacement of the original interstitial liquidby one saturated only in olivine (± plagioclase). Progressivethrough-flow of this liquid resulted in the stripping out ofclinopyroxene from the lower parts of the allivalite. We interpretthe Wavy Horizon as a reaction front, representing the pointat which the invading liquid became saturated in clinopyroxene. The distinctive pyroxene-enriched zone immediately above theWavy Horizon could have formed when mixing of the interstitialliquids on either side of the reaction front formed a supercooledliquid oversaturated in pyroxene, as a result of the curvatureof the olivine–plagioclase–clinopyroxene cotectic. The presence of many such approximately layer-parallel features, defined by differences in pyroxene content, in the Eastern LayeredIntrusion of Rum suggests that such an infiltration–reactionprocess was not unique to Unit 9. Deformation structures in the wall rocks of igneous intrusions emplaced at shallow crustal depths preserve an important record of how space was created for magma in the host rocks. Trachyte Mesa, a small Oligocene age intrusion in the Henry Mountains, Utah, is composed of a series of stacked tabular, sheet-like intrusions emplaced at 3–3.5 km depth into sandstone-dominated sedimentary sequences of late Palaeozoic–Mesozoic age. New structural analysis of the spatial distribution, geometry, kinematics and relative timings of deformation structures in the host rocks of the intrusion has enabled the recognition of distinct pre-, syn-, and late-stage-emplacement deformation phases. Our observations suggest a two-stage growth mechanism for individual sheets where radial growth of a thin sheet was followed by vertical inflation. Dip-slip faults formed during vertical inflation; they are restricted to the tips of individual sheets due to strain localisation, with magma preferentially exploiting these faults, initiating sill (sheet) climbing. The order in which sheets are stacked impacts on the intrusion geometry and associated deformation of wall rocks. Our results offer new insights into the incremental intrusion geometries of shallow-level magmatic bodies and the potential impact of their emplacement on surrounding host rocks.  相似文献
