From the ground-based colorimetry performed for two surface regions of the near side of the Moon, images of the phase ratio of the color index C(600 nm/470 nm) have been built for the phase angles between 2° and 95°. It has been found that for phase angles smaller than α ∼ 40°–50°, the color index of the highlands grows with the phase quicker than that of the mare regions. For larger phase angles, α > 50°, a reverse situation is observed. The laboratory data on the spectrophotometry of the lunar samples confirm the peculiarities found in the phase dependence of color. The influence of multiple scattering on the phase dependence of the color of the mare and highland regions of the Moon are discussed.  相似文献

There is a correlation between Martian thermal inertia and radar cross section data centered on +22° latitude. The correlation is strongest with 70-cm radar, except between longitudes 10 and 90° where there is a slight anticorrelation, and gets progressively weaker at 12.5- and 3.8-cm wavelengths, respectively. A correlation is expected because of the dependence of both properties on density, but an increase in the average particle size of the surface with increasing dielectric constant is also required in order to explain the data. This may take the form of an increased number of small rocks. The anticorrelation may result from either the effects of atmospheric dust on the surface temperature or from the effects on radar of local variations in large-scale roughness or scattering by rocks. The relative behavior between the wavelengths can be understood in terms of appropriately sized rocks which act as radar scatterers. The trend of the correlation agrees with the dichotomy of the planet into two types of terrain, as noted in other remote-sensing data, and is consistent with an erosional versus depositional surface nature. Variations in the surface dielectric constant, inferred from the 3.8-cm radar data, can explain discrepancies between 2.8-cm radio emission observations and a simple model based on the global distribution of thermal inertia and albedo.  相似文献

The Goldstone radar system was operated at wavelengths of 3.5 and 12.6 cm to probe the Martian surface during the 1975 opposition. Regions studied in detail by range-Doppler techniques are Syrtis Major, Sinus Meridiani, and the crater Schiaparelli. Average rms slopes of 1.6° and 1.1° were measured in Syrtis Major at 3.5 and 12.6 cm, respectively, while the average reflectivity was 0.064 ± 0.02 at both wavelengths. No wavelength dependence of surface roughness was seen in Sinus Meridiani, where rms surface slopes averaged 1.8° and the reflectivity was 0.08 ± 0.02. The regions around Schiaparelli were probed at a 12.6-cm wavelength. The echo from the bottom of the crater was undetectable. Hence ρ0C < 25, where ρ0 is the reflectivity and C is the Hagfors roughness parameter. Operating at 3.5 cm during May and June of 1976, 149 continous-wave echo spectra were obtained near latitude 18°, sampling most longitudes including the early Viking landing sites A1 and A2. The average total radar cross section is 4.8% of the geometrical cross section. The diffuse component was estimated to be 1.9%, leaving 2.9% to the average quasi-specular component. The average rms slope is 4.1°. Six spectra obtained at site A1 indicate that rms slopes are 5 to 9° between latitudes 17 and 19°. Three spectra obtained at s site A2 indicate an rms slope of 3.9°.  相似文献

Linear polarizations measured for asteroid 433 Eros at various wavelengths and at solar phase angles ranging from 9° to 53° are presented. The polarization results are entirely typical of main-belt S asteroids, and indicate a dusty surface with geometric albedo 0.20. The derived effective diameter at photometric maximum is 21 km. Eros is quite uniform polarimetrically; no dependence on aspect is detected, and the polarization is shown to be constant during a single rotation with a precision of one part in forty.  相似文献

The Venus water vapor line at 8197.71 Å has been monitored at several positions on the disk of Venus and at phase angles between 21° and 162°. Variations in the abundance have been found with spatial location, phase angle and time. During the 1972–1974 period, the total two-way absorption has varied from less than 1 to 77 μm of water vapor. The dependence on phase angle indicates 20 to 50 μm over the disk between 30° and 110° and small, but detectable amounts present during the rest of the observations. The spatial distribution with respect to the intensity equator is uniform with no location on the disk having systematically a higher or lower abundance. Comparisons made between the water vapor abundandances and the CO2 abundances determined from near-simultaneous observations of CO2 bands at the same positions on the disk of Venus show no correlation for the majority of the samples.  相似文献

New measurements of the Venus diameter in four wavelengths are presented. These measurements refer to phase angles between 92° and 145° completing those by other observers. No dependence on the wavelength of the diameter of the planet is found. The resulted value is : 16.86 ± 0.02 arcsec.  相似文献

The polarization of Pluto has been measured for a range of solar phase angles from 0.8 to 1.8°. A mean linear polarization of 0.29 ± 0.01% (error of the mean) was found. No dependence of both the amount of polarization and position angles with rotational phase or solar phase angle could be detected. The positional angles of polarization agree with calculated position angles of the defect of illumination and are therefore parallel to the scattering plane. The observed polarization cannot be explained as resulting purely from a surface material which is similar to asteroidal surfaces. A hypothesis of polarization from a thin atmosphere, in addition to the surface polarization, is advanced.  相似文献

Mars surface characteristics at and near the Viking Chryse and Tritonis Lacus landing areas were determined by radio scatter using the new 12.6 cm radar at the Arecibo Observatory during 1975–1976. Interpretation of each power spectrum suggests rms surface tilts of 4° at the final A1WNW (47.9°W, 22.5°N) site, 5° near the original A1 site, and 6° between the two. At the back-up site (A2) surface roughness estimates were about 4°. Striking changes in surface texture have been found near the eastern bases of Tharsis Montes and Albor Tholus, each volcanic feature marking the western boundary of very smooth surface units. The roughness sensed at 1 to 100 m scales by radar appears to be relatively independent of the surface units defined at large scale lengths by photogeologists. Radar properties thus provide an additional means by which planetary surfaces may be characterized.  相似文献

Angular power spectra for neutral hydrogen towardsl = 140°,b = 0° on scales from ≈ 1° to 1/10° are presented. The spectra are generally well fitted by a power-law dependence on radius in theuv-plane, with an index between ≈ -2.2 and ≈ -3.0. The more distant hydrogen, which corresponds to larger physical scales, tends to have a more negative index than does the nearer material. There is no preferred angular scale apparent at any velocity. For the distant hydrogen there is no obvious difference between the slope of power spectra for emission aligned perpendicular compared with that parallel to the Galactic plane.  相似文献

Tides in the atmosphere of Venus may help to stabilize its slow retrograde rotation. The frequency dependence of the body tides also affects its rotational stability. However, the obliquity is probably maintained near 180° by friction between the core and mantle of Venus. In any case, it appears most likely that Venus originated with an obliquity greater than 90°.  相似文献

High-resolution radar observations of Mars at a wavelength of 3.8 cm have been carried out at the Haystack Observatory for a period of about 6 months surrounding the 1971 opposition. The relative surface height variation with longitude over a band of Martian latitudes between about ?14° and ?22° has been derived from these observations with an error of about 75m in the most favorable cases. At ?14° latitude, the dielectric constant was found to increase steadily from about 1.7 at 70°W to about 5.0 at 110°W. Over the same interval the rms surface slopes vary from 2° to 1°. The mean equatorial radius of Mars as determined from the combined radar data of 1967, 1969 and 1971 was found to be 3394 ± 2km.  相似文献

It is shown that the lists of Shakhbazian Compact Galaxy Groups (SCGGs) are not complete. The number of the detected groups in the strip between b = ±30° and b = ±20° is by four to five times smaller than expected. The most probable reason is that during the search for SCGGs it was hard to distinguish images of compact galaxies from that of stars on the POSS prints in dense areas of the sky at lower galactic latitudes. There is some deficit of the detected groups between 60° and 40° of the north galactic latitudes. The surface density of SCGGs in the southern galactic hemisphere between b = −50° and b = −30° is by about three times less than it is expected. Obviously, the southern sky has not been searched properly. The list of Hickson's groups is complete down to galactic latitude ±30°. However, some excess of HCGs is found in the southern hemisphere, where the surface density of the found groups is by about two times higher than that of in the northern hemisphere.  相似文献

We report on a measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum with the IceTop air shower array, the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole. The data used in this analysis were taken between June and October, 2007, with 26 surface stations operational at that time, corresponding to about one third of the final array. The fiducial area used in this analysis was 0.122 km2. The analysis investigated the energy spectrum from 1 to 100 PeV measured for three different zenith angle ranges between 0° and 46°. Because of the isotropy of cosmic rays in this energy range the spectra from all zenith angle intervals have to agree. The cosmic-ray energy spectrum was determined under different assumptions on the primary mass composition. Good agreement of spectra in the three zenith angle ranges was found for the assumption of pure proton and a simple two-component model. For zenith angles θ < 30°, where the mass dependence is smallest, the knee in the cosmic ray energy spectrum was observed at about 4 PeV, with a spectral index above the knee of about −3.1. Moreover, an indication of a flattening of the spectrum above 22 PeV was observed.  相似文献

Nonthermal emission occurs in the cores of the 9.4- and 10.4-μm CO2 bands on Mars, and has been recently identified as a natural atmospheric laser. This paper presents observations of the total flux and center-to-limb dependence of this emission for Mars and Venus. The emission is believed to be excited by absorption of solar flux in the near-ir CO2 bands, followed by collisional transfer to the 00°1 state of CO2. A comparison is made between the observations and a detailed theoretical model based on this mechanism. It is found that the theoretical model successfully reproduces the observed center-to-limb dependence of this emission, to within the limits imposed by the spatial resolution of the observations. A comparison is also made between the observed fluxes and the predictions of the theoretical models. The observed flux from Mars agrees closely with the prediction of the model; the flux observed from Venus is 74% of the flux predicted by the model. This emission is utilized to obtain the kinetic temperatures of the Martian and Venusian mesospheres. For Mars near 70 km altitude, a rotational temperature analysis using five lines gives T = 135 ± 20°K. The frequency width of the emission is also analyzed to derive a temperature of 126 ± 6°K. In the case of the Venusian mesosphere near 109 km, the frequency width of the emission gives T = 204 ± 10°K.  相似文献

Many meteoroids burn up between about 120 km and 70 km, deposit metals and dust and form ionized trails which are detected by radars. Model studies about the influence of neutral or positively charged background dust on the ambipolar diffusion indicate that significant smaller decay times should be observed for weak meteor echoes compared to strong meteor echoes which can affect the estimation of temperatures. The variation of meteor decay times in dependence on echo strength, height, and season was studied using radar observations at 69° N, 22° S, and 67° S. Significantly reduced decay times were found for weak echoes below about 88 km at low latitudes throughout the year, and at high latitudes with the exception of summer. In summer at high latitudes, decreasing decay times of weak and strong meteors are observed at altitudes below about 85 km during the appearance of noctilucent clouds. The impact of reduced decay times on the estimation of neutral temperatures from decay times is discussed.  相似文献

The Goldstone radar system was used at a wavelength of 12.6 cm to probe the Martian surface during the 1973 opposition. Measurements of range and reflected power were made at least weekly between July 12 and November 24. Surface cells isolated by the radar system were 8 km E-W × 110 km N-S. Altitudes were calculated from signal time delays measured relative to a triaxial ellipsoid and were combined with altitudes measured during the 1971 opposition. Contours of constant altitude were calculated at 200 m intervals between latitudes ?14° and ?22°. These contours are presented in conjunction with Mars charts derived from Mariner 9 television pictures. Reflected power was measured at angles of incidence between ?5° and +5°. These measurements were combined with those obtained during the 1971 opposition. Predictions of the reflected power versus the angle of incidence were calculated from the exponential surface model of Hagfors. The predictions were fit to the data in a least-squares sense, using a nonlinear iterative procedure, to yield estimates of surface roughness and reflectivity. The smoother regions exhibit a typical reflectivity of 8.2%. A tendency for the reflectivity to decrease with increasing roughness was observed.  相似文献

Four-color photographic photometry of Saturn for the 1977–1979 apparitions has been analyzed to determine the dependence of ring brightness on wavelength, solar phase angle, ring particle orbital phase angle (azimuthal effect), declination of the Earth relative to the ring plane (tilt angle), and radial distance from Saturn. Azimuthal brightness variations up to ±20% relative to the ansae are clearly apparent for the maximum of ring A, but are not detectable for ring B or the outer portion of ring A. The shape of the intensity (I) versus orbital phase angle (θ) curve varies with ring tilt (B) and probably with wavelength, and shows 180° symmetry. As characterized by its slope near the ansae, this curve suggests that the azimuthal effect increases as B decreases from 26 to ≈11°. The phase curves l(α) for the ansae show very little dependence on ring tilt (26° > B > 6°), on wavelength, or on radial distance from Saturn; possibly the curves are somewhat steeper at the smallest tilt angles and for ring A relative to ring B. The radial profile of both rings becomes flatter with decreasing tilt angle and with decreasing wavelength. The latter effect is a natural result of the classical, many-particle-thick ring model.  相似文献

Explorer 26 magnetic field data in the magnetospheric region of L=3?6 and LT 1100–1500 hr with geomagnetic latitude range ?6° to 27° have been analyzed for studying nineteen SI and SC events. Most of the SI events observed in the magnetosphere at less than 15° geomagnetic latitude are compressional with magnetic perturbations along the ambient field. Elliptic polarizations with magnetic field variations in all three components have been observed between 10° and 27° geomagnetic latitude. Polarization directions have been shown to have similar patterns to those observed in the surface magnetic field data. Afternoon LT zone data in the magnetosphere indicate polarization patterns in general agreement with the results of Wilson and Sugiura (1961) obtained earlier from surface observations. The SI/SC perturbations are also qualitatively shown to be related to changes in the interplanetary magnetic field observed beyond 1 a.u.  相似文献

The strengths of 10 bands in the absorption spectrum of liquid methane betwen 19 400 and 6190 Å have been measured. After a small correction for the polarizability of the liquid is applied, for the purpose of comparison with similar gas phase measurements, it is found that there is no temperature dependence of the band strengths between 95 and 295°K. Changes of band shape with temperature cause the 95°K laboratory spectra to resemble Saturn more than room temperature observations do. Gas phase absorption clearly dominates the liquid in planetary spectra, so liquid methane cannot be detected in the outer Solar System by Earth-based observations.  相似文献
