Summary. A palaeomagnetic record of the geomagnetic secular variation during the last 10000 years has been obtained from 10 cores of sediment from Loch Lomond, Scotland, Lake Windermere, North England, and Llyn Geirionydd, North Wales. A time-scale is provided by 30 radiocarbon age determinations and pollen analyses on several of the cores. The main swings and much fine detail of both declination and inclination records repeat well between cores and between lakes, and the overall record is much more detailed than previous European records.
The new record shows that neither declination nor inclination swings have been periodic over the past 10000 years, but that the main swings have become progressively shorter in duration during that time. Each swing is characterized by fine detail which enables use of the record as a secondary method of dating other European sediments.
The motion of the geomagnetic vector has been predominantly clockwise throughout the time period spanned, but confirms a period of anticlockwise motion from 1100 to 600 bp first discovered by British archaeomagnetic investigations. The record agrees with British and Czechoslovakian archaeomagnetic records, but not with Japanese archaeomagnetic or North American lake sediment records. This suggests that the secular changes are controlled by local growing and decaying, drifting sources, rather than by wobbling of the main geomagnetic dipole.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetism of Holocene lake sediments from north Poland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary. Detailed palaeomagnetic investigations of 17 cores of Holocene lake sediments from four lakes in Poland show a pattern of declination variations similar to those found in Lake Windermere, England and in addition a well defined pattern of inclination variations. A total of nine inclination swings are observed compared to five declination swings and their phase relationships are such that both sets of swings cannot be periodic. Exact dating of the palaeomagnetic record is not possible as radiocarbon ages are over 1000 yr older than those deduced from palynological studies. Thermomagnetic and X-ray studies on magnetic concentrates confirm the results of studies of remanence cooling, IRM acquisition and coercivity experiments which are consistent with fine grained magnetite as the main magnetic mineral in the sediments.  相似文献

Summary. A 10 000 yr continuous secular variation record from intensively dated lake sediments in SE Australia has been subjected to periodogram and maximum entropy method analysis. Tests on synthetic data reveal some of the limitations of the latter method, particularly when applied to complex number series. Anticlockwise precession of the magnetic vector at a period of 5000 ± 1000 yr is tentatively ascribed to dipole precession, and clockwise precession at a period of about 2800 yr is probably due to westward drift of features of the non-dipole field.
The effect of calibrating the radiocarbon time-scale is important and results in periodicity shifts of up to 25 per cent. Even for well-dated lacustrine sequences power spectra are poorly constrained: it is thus possible that the geomagnetic secular variation on a time-scale of thousands of years is more uniform than often supposed. Mismatches between declination and inclination spectra can arise as a natural consequence of certain types of source mechanism and should not be simply attributed to figments of the analysis employed.  相似文献

A secular variation record of the geomagnetic field direction for the last 6.5  kyr has been obtained from the magnetization of sediment cores from Erhai Lake, southwest China. In order to make a comparison with this record, secular variation in east-central China was investigated by combining available magnetic field data from historical records and archaeomagnetic measurements since about 350 bc . The secular variation in Erhai Lake shows features consistent with the combined record, except for the oldest three observed declination swings in Sian from 720 to 900 ad . Many features of declination and inclination in China also occur in Japan. From 500 to 1000 ad , declination was westerly ranging from about −20° to −5° in Erhai Lake, east-central China, and Japan.  相似文献

Summary. Detailed palaeomagnetic results from a rapidly deposited 12.5-m Younger Yoldia Clay sequence of age around 14 000 B.P. at the coast cliff at Nørre Lyngby (northern Jutland, Denmark) and a 2-m Older Yoldia Clay sequence of age somewhere between 23 000 and 40 000 B.P. are presented and discussed. The Younger Yoldia Clay spans some 1000–1500 yr and shows swings in inclination and declination of about that period, and also more rapid oscillations which are particularly marked in inclination, showing that rapid secular variations as have occurred during historic times were indeed also present back in time. There exist easterly declinations of 80° to 90° in the upper half of the Younger Yoldia Clay which cause the virtual geomagnetic pole to migrate clockwise to around 50° away from the rotation pole. This we name the 'Nørre Lyngby declination excursion'.
In the Older Yoldia Clay, as well as secular variations in both declination and inclination, significant low inclination values are found, confirming the existence of the recently named 'Rubjerg low inclination excursion', with the virtual geomagnetic pole moving first in a clockwise then in an anticlockwise sense at 40° to 60° away from the rotation pole.
It is therefore inferred that models for the Earth's geomagnetic field should involve at least local rapid eastward as well as westward 'drift' of the non-dipole field components at various times in the past.  相似文献

Summary. Geomagnetic declination and inclination secular variation curves have been constructed back to 6000 yr bp from palaeomagnetic measurements of sediments cored in Lakes Volvi, Trikhonis and Begoritis, Greece. They have been dated by palynological studies and by comparison with observatory and archaeomagnetic records. Radiocarbon ages are all affected by the'old carbon'factor. Cores from all three lakes contain a thin ash layer which we associate with the Pompeii eruption of Vesuvius in ad 79. Averaged curves of secular variations of declination and inclination have been computed for the whole study. The broader scale pattern of secular variations is basically similar to lake sediment records from the UK, Poland and Switzerland, though finer detail in the structure of some of the principal features is resolved.  相似文献

Summary. Measurements of the declination, inclination and intensity of the archaeomagnetic field have been made on samples collected from 175 sites in south-eastern Europe. The results reveal both long and short term fluctuations in the ancient virtual dipole moment as well as providing a record of the virtual pole position over an 8000 yr period.  相似文献

Summary. The Precambrian basement under east-central Kansas was drilled at two circular aeromagnetic positives, one at Osawattamie and one at Big Springs. The core retrieved from these sites is a coarse to medium grained granite which has been dated by U-Pb to be 1350 Ma old. The palaeomagnetism of these azimuthally unoriented cores was studied to see if a technique which uses low-coercivity, low-temperature magnetization components to orient the cores would allow an independent confirmation of the core's mid-Proterozoic age. Orthogonal projection plots of the alternating field (af) and thermal demagnetization data show that the magnetization of these cores is relatively simple, having only two components: a low-temperature, low-coercivity magnetization with steep positive inclinations and a shallow, negative inclination characteristic magnetization for the Osawattamie core or a positive, moderate inclination characteristic magnetization for the Big Springs core. If the declination of the low-temperature, low-coercivity component is aligned parallel to the present field declination, the characteristic directions may be azimuthally oriented. This allows the calculation of palaeomagnetic poles for the Big Springs core (lat. = 4.5°S, long. = 29.9°E) and the Osawattamie core (lat.= 20.2°N, long. = 39.3°E) which are consistent with Irving's apparent polar wander path for Laurentia at about 1300–1400 Ma. Comparison of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), viscous remanent magnetization (VRM), and isothermal remanent magnetization af demagnetization curves with a natural remanent magnetization (NRM) demagnetization curve suggests that the Osawattamie core probably acquired a piezoremanent magnetization (PRM) parallel to the core axis during drilling.  相似文献

Summary. A new roadcut has enabled us to sample the south-dipping limb of the Montmartin syncline for a palaeomagnetic reevaluation of an earlier result published by Jones, Van der Voo & Bonhommet. In combination with the results previously published in 1979 for the north-dipping beds of the syncline, a conclusively negative fold test is obtained. The resulting magnetization (declination/inclination =206°/-3°, α95= 12°, palaeopole at 38°S, 325°E) is interpreted to be of Late Carboniferous age, not Late Devonian as thought earlier. Simultaneously, we have re-evaluated the age of the rocks, previously thought to be Late Devonian on the basis of Acritarchs, Chitinozoans and spores. It has not been possible to reconfirm these fossils, not even in the same samples as studied originally; in contrast, the regional presence of Early Palaeozoic fossils suggests to us an age similar to that of other red beds in the Arrnorican Massif, which have been dated as Early Ordovician. The geodynamic implications of our finding that the Montmartin rocks are completely remagnetized, however, are of no great consequence for the geodynamics of the Hercynian belt. Pre-folding magnetization obtained from Silurian and Devonian rocks in Spain and Germany argue for the same conclusion as reached erroneously in our earlier study, namely that the Armorican Massif and adjacent parts of Hercynian Europe were adjointed to North America, Great Britain, the Baltic Shield and the Russian Platform since at least Late Devonian time. If a Medio-European ocean existed during the Palaeozoic, it was virtually closed before the mid-Devonian and of insignificant width during Culm deposition in Early Carboniferoirs time.  相似文献

Hitherto, no palaeomagnetic data for India are available earlier than the Jurassic, 130 M.y. The remanent magnetic directions of oriented samples from one Jurassic and four pre-Cambrian rock formations in India have now been determined. One pre-Cambrian formation gave very scattered direction: the other four formations gave well-defined directions and their magnetic stability was demonstrated by a.c. and thermal demagnetization. The three pre-Cambrian results enable values of the ancient latitude and orientation of India to be estimated at 500, 600 and 750 M.y., assuming the ancient field to have been an axial dipole.
By making use of these new results, together with similar data by other workers for Australia, North America and Europe, it can be shown that, as far as the scanty data goes, the rate of drift in latitudes and orientation of the four continents has been of roughly the same magnitude throughout the period since 750 M.y.  相似文献

Summary. Palaeomagnetic results from 212 horizons spread evenly through an 18 m sedimentary sequence in southern British Columbia are reported. Radiocarbon ages suggest that the sequence spans the interval from 31 200 to 19 500 yr bp. No evidence for any large geomagnetic excursions (such as the so-called Mono Lake Excursion) is found, but a distinctive pattern of 'normal' secular variation is observed with declination and inclination swings of 45° and 25° peak to peak amplitude respectively. For the most part the secular variation consists of low amplitude oscillations about the field vector of a geocentric axial dipole expected at the site latitude, but three relatively large perturbations occur at approximately 4000 yr intervals. These perturbations systematically bias the overall mean to shallow inclinations and easterly declinations in a manner reminiscent of the spatially non-isotropic secular variation model proposed by Cox. The bias involved is about 6° in declination and 3° in inclination (overall mean D = 5.8°E, I = 64.2°, α95 = 0.9°, N = 212 horizons), which leads to a pole which is both 'far-sided' and 'right-handed'. If the horizons involved in the three major perturbations are eliminated the mean direction ( D = 1.2°E, I = 67.2°, α95 = 0.8°, N = 125 horizons) does not differ from that of a geocentric axial dipole despite the small cone of confidence.  相似文献

A detailed study has been made of the remanent magnetization of five Pilansberg dykes, by means of measurements on oriented specimens of the rocks. Outcrops of the dykes prove to have suffered magnetic disturbance of their original thermo-remanent magnetization. Specimens from depths of a few thousand feet, taken in Witwatersrand gold mines, show highly consistent magnetisation of the basic parts of the dykes over considerable distances between sampling sites. The mean directions given by the five dykes agree well, and the mean direction from the five dykes gives a North-seeking magnetic pole with inclination +69.3 and azimuth N 24° E. Assuming thermo-remanent magnetisation by a geocentric dipole field, this places a North magnetic pole in latitude 71/2° N, longitude 421/ E at the time of intrusion of the dykes. The age of the dykes is uncertain, but is probably about 300 to 400 million years. Some of the specimens have been subjected to alternating magnetic fields in order to test the stability of their magnetisations. The basic specimens are found to be highly stable, being only slightly affected by fields of 100 to 300 oersteds. The possible implications of the results are discussed, in terms of hypotheses of polar wandering and continental drift.  相似文献

Summary The analysis of palaeomagnetic data where only inclinations are available is considered. Maximum likelihood estimates for the mean inclination I 0 and Fisher's precision parameter k are derived. It is shown that they are in all cases biased although the bias is small for low inclinations. The case of steep inclinations and small values of k is examined and it is shown that in this region I 0 and k are not separable as distinct variables, because the lack of declination information in this region leads to fundamental ambiguities. Unbiased estimates for I 0 and (1/ k ) are derived for the case where the portion of the distribution folded about the vertical is insubstantial. A worked example of the method, with calculation of confidence limits, is appended.  相似文献

根据两年来北京地区的野外风沙考察,半定位风沙(尘)观测,室内风洞实验以及有关区域资料的分析研究得出:风沙问题是北京区域环境存在的严重问题之一,区域风沙活动由来已久,在频繁程度上不亚于半干旱区的河北坝上和乌盟后山地区。区内各地风沙活动均以春季为主,冬春两季风沙活动约占全年的80%以上。风沙天气的年际变化较大,五十年代最为频繁,六十年代最少,七十年代初期又有回升,中期以后至八十年代中期又逐渐趋于减少。风沙活动的形成及其盛衰变化,除与自然因素有关外,还与地表植被和土壤结构等因人类活动所造成的变化息息相关。风沙活动不仅使大气遭受污染,而且使土地资源遭受破坏。全区风沙危害严重的区域(风沙区)面积达342万亩,约占平原区总面积的35.6%,其中沙质地表因长期遭受风力作用所形成的风沙化土地面积约为136万余亩,占平原区面积的14.2%,以永定河冲积平原分布面积最大。研究证明,北京地区风沙主要来源于本地,系就地起沙。因此,风沙防治要立足于本地,特别是风沙土地的治理,对根治本区风沙危害、改善首都环境具有根本性意义。  相似文献

Summary Nine basic dykes were sampled near Angmagssalik, east Greenland. Specimens have been treated by alternating field demagnetization in 11 steps up to 3000 (peak) oersted (300 ml). The 'cleaned' direction at all sites is recognized after treatment at 150 oersted. All specimens are reversely magnetized. The mean of the site mean directions has declination = 182°.0, inclination =−66°.9, it = 45, α95= 7°.7. This direction yields a palaeomagnetic pole (reversed) at 73°.4N, 139°.5E ( dp = 10°.7, dm = 12°.9) which is near, but significantly different from, that derived from lower Tertiary rocks in Greenland, namely 63°.2N, 184°.6E ( A 95= 4°.5). K-Ar ages of the nine dykes, based upon whole-rock and mineral separates, range from mid-Tertiary to Cambrian. It is impossible to reconcile these ages with the palaeomagnetic results. The palaeomagnetic evidence, supported by geological inference, suggests that all nine dykes are members of the east Greenland lower Tertiary dyke swarm, designated THOL1, of probable age c. 52 Ma.
The difference between the poles given above can be explained by supposing that the sampling area has tipped about a horizontal axis directed along 013°/193°, the angle of rotation being 13° (± 11°) anti-clockwise, when the axis is viewed along 013°. This local effect could have been due to block faulting when the north-east Atlantic started to open, or may be attributed to upwarping of the coast due to the weight of the ice-cap inland.  相似文献

Our main purpose is to collect all magnetic intensity data observed in the vicinity of London and to adjust these to a common site (Greenwich) to complement the 400-year series of declination ( D ) and inclination ( I ) data of Malin & Bullard (1981 ). The present series is necessarily shorter, since a method for the measurement of intensity in absolute units was not devised until 1832. We have also supplemented the D and I series of Malin & Bullard with recently acquired data.
We have also made observations of D , I and total intensity ( F ) at a number of the sites, partly to bring the series up to date and partly to check on the site differences. With the increasing urbanization of London it is necessary to seek data from remoter sites. It is shown that the site differences change significantly with time, but that allowance can be made for this.
We present curves of our best estimates of the variation of D , I , F and the horizontal intensity ( H ) that define the complete geomagnetic vector at Greenwich for the interval 1820–1998. Frequency analysis shows little support for a 60-year line in the power spectrum. Within the uncertainty of their determinations, there is good continuity between archaeomagnetic intensity measures and the present results. The moving eddy hypothesis of Malin & Bullard is found to be untenable.  相似文献

One of the major goals of geomorphology is to understand the rate of landscape evolution and the constraints that erosion sets on the longevity of land surfaces. The latter has also turned out to be vital in modern applications of cosmogenic exposure dating and interpretation of lichenometric data from unconsolidated landforms. Because the effects of landform degradation have not been well documented, disagreements exist among researchers regarding the importance of degradation processes in the dating techniques applied to exposures. Here, we show that all existing qualitative data and quantitative markers of landform degradation collectively suggest considerable lowering of the surface of unconsolidated landforms over the typical life span of Quaternary moraines or fault scarps. Degradation is ubiquitous and considerable even on short time scales of hundreds of years on steeply sloping landforms. These conservative analyses are based entirely on field observations of decreasing slope angles of landforms over the typical range of ages in western North America and widely accepted modeling of landscape degradation. We found that the maximum depth of erosion on fault scarps and moraines is on average 34% of the initial height of the scarp and 25% of the final height of the moraine. Although our observations are limited to fault scarps and moraines, the results apply to any sloping unconsolidated landform in the western North America. These results invalidate the prevailing assumption of no or little surface lowering on sloping unconsolidated landforms over the Quaternary Period and affirm that accurate interpretations of lichen ages and cosmogenically dated boulder ages require keen understanding of the ever-present erosion. In our view, the most important results are twofold: 1) to show with a large data set that degradation affects universally all sloping unconsolidated landforms, and 2) to unambiguously show that even conservative estimates of the total lowering of the surface operate at time and depth scales that significantly interfere with cosmogenic exposure and lichen dating.  相似文献

Secular polar motion has been recorded in ILS data over the past 75 years, an amount greater by a factor of ten than the 'true polar wandering' deduced from paleomagnetic data. In this work, the possibility that the secular trend is an observational artifact of the continental drift of the ILS stations is directly examined by consideration of several absolute plate velocity models earlier proposed by Minster et al. (1974), Kaula (1975), and Solomon, Sleep & Richardson (1975). The assumptions underlying those models are discussed; in general, the absolute velocity models are more likely to be valid when geologically short timescales are considered.
The corrections to the ILS data due to the stations' motion fail by an order of magnitude to explain the ILS trend; even by taking into account possible plate hyperactivity and non-rigidity, the corrections could explain no more than 30 per cent of the trend. The corrections are small because the absolute plate velocities of North America and Eurasia are small and primarily east—west. Consequently, the rotation pole is undergoing significant motion of its own relative to the surface of the Earth.
The Kimura z term found by the ILS observations provides an independent means of estimating the relative motion between Eurasia and North America. It also contains other geophysical information; the 7.5-yr periodicity discovered by Naito & Ishii (1974) may be widespread.
Lastly, tectonically induced changes in the zenith direction, such as at Mizusawa, are probably too small to be detected, contrary to earlier proposals.  相似文献

基于复杂网络方法,运用GIS、Pajek、Matlab和数据库等技术手段,构建世界跨国投资网络,考察2001~2012年世界跨国投资网络结构及其复杂性的时序演化过程。根据研究可以得出以下主要结论:世界跨国投资网络整体遵循“核心-边缘”的圈层结构,结构内部不断变化和重组,呈现由双核主导向多核互联演变,形成资本从西欧、北美、东亚向北欧、南美、西亚、东南亚流动的格局;世界投资网络具有显著小世界性质和无标度特征,无标度特征伴随时间的推移趋于弱化;投资活动活跃的国家,对跨国投资网络拥有更强的控制力,但对强化投资的可达性作用不显著,其主要受市场等潜在因素的影响;跨国投资结构的复杂性由高到低依次为中枢型投资地、区域型投资地、一般型投资地、孤立型投资地,不同功能类型的空间分布具有显著的集聚性。  相似文献
