Heavy metal concentrations in samples collected from the London 2012 Olympic Village were determined using a three-step sequential extraction and a rapid extraction method. Metal toxicity was measured by employing the Microtox? solid phase analysis. Both extraction methods produced comparable results (p?=?0.996), but the rapid method produced higher readings. A number of heavy metals were detected using the two extraction methods, including aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, lead and zinc; beryllium, molybdenum, niobium and titanium were also found in low concentration ranging between 0.16 and 27.10?mg/kg in the total acid digestion. The total metal levels in all the soil samples were within the UK Soil Guideline Value (SGV) except for lead which ranged between 62.9 and 776.2?mg/kg. The 30?min EC50 of different soil fractions was 2?C5.8?g/L. In the absence of any of heavy metals in the SGV, the Dutch Guideline values were referred. Mathematical models for a number of metals were generated based on the changes in EC50 values between each (F1, F2 and F3) soil fractions and the initial toxicity in the non-fractionated samples. The resulting models produced good R2 values (>96%) for predicting the change in toxicity of lead, cadmium, zinc and copper by measuring their changes in concentrations. These models could substantially reduce the time requires to determine the toxicity in the samples; they would be a useful tool in the clean up process where monitoring of metal toxicity is required.  相似文献

An approach to groundwater exploration and utilisation is presented in an area that was traditionally regarded as having scarce groundwater resources. The area is situated in the Northern Province of South Africa and is known as the Nebo Plateau, which is formed by the Nebo Granite of the Lebowa Granite Suite, Bushveld Igneous Complex. Several historic tectonic events resulted in previously unutilised aquifers, of which the Spitskop Complex and geological lineaments associated with the Wonderkop Fault are examples. Both these areas show promising results, although high fluoride content in the groundwater may pose a problem. This can, however, be solved by treatment processes. The paper emphasises that the influence of the regional geology must be taken into account when exploring and developing groundwater in areas underlain by hard crystalline rocks.  相似文献

The exploitation of natural resources in Latin American countries has become one of the most controversial issues of contemporary development. Three positions arise: 1) a position that opens the development of natural resources to foreign priorities and capitals; 2) a position that opposes any kind of development if it is not conducted by the state, even if the state lacks the financial resources to do so; and 3) a position that sees advantages in negotiating the development of resources with external partnership but reserves for the state the determination of priorities and the leading role in the exploitation. The third position assumes the existence of a responsible government commited to safeguarding national interests. Unfortunately, this last assumption is not very operative with Latin American governments which seldom have standing policies concerning natural resources, which leaves them open to assaults from private national and international interests.Contrary to opposite views, it has been demonstrated that the development of natural resources brings about stimulation of regional economies and relocation of populations toward resource frontiers. Opposing the development of such areas of resources is to negate the concept of progress and to deepen chronic poverty.  相似文献

Thermal waters from the Yangbajing geothermal field, Tibet, contain high concentrations of B, As, and F, up to 119, 5.7 and 19.6 mg/L, respectively. In this paper, the distribution of B, As, and F in the aquatic environment at Yangbajing was surveyed. The results show that most river water samples collected downstream of the Zangbo River have comparatively higher concentrations of B, As, and F (up to 3.82, 0.27 and 1.85 mg/L, respectively), indicating that the wastewater discharge of the geothermal power plant at Yangbajing has resulted in B, As, and F contamination in the river. Although the concentrations of B, As, and F of the Zangbo river waters decline downstream of the wastewater discharge site due to dilution effect and sorption onto bottom sediments, the sample from the conjunction of the Zangbo River and the Yangbajing River has higher contents of B, As, and F as compared with their predicted values obtained using our regression analysis models. The differences between actual and calculated contents of B, As, and F can be attributed to the contribution from upstream of the Yangbajing River. Water quality deterioration of the river has induced health problems among dwellers living in and downstream of Yangbajing. Effective measures, such as decontamination of wastewater and reinjection into the geothermal field, should be taken to protect the environment at Yangbajing.  相似文献

The characteristics of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in surface water from Beijing Olympic Forest Park (BOFP) were investigated in this study. Nanofiltration (NF) pretreatment procedure using two NF membranes (NF90 and NF270) was applied to increase the accuracy and precision of DON measurements in surface water samples with high dissolved inorganic nitrogen/total dissolved nitrogen (DIN/TDN) ratios. Compared to NF90, NF270 showed better performance in lowering the DIN/TDN ratio and retaining DOC in both the synthetic water and raw water samples. DON concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 0.83 mg N L?1 in water samples collected over four different months and showed a seasonal variation. The DON increased in summer due to the higher activity of decomposers on recent litterfall or because of a higher production of biomass in the surface water body. The molecular weight (MW) fractions of <3 kDa accounted for more than 50 % of the total DOC concentration and the fractions of <3 kDa contributed to more than 48 % of the total DON concentration. It could be concluded that most of the DON present in surface water of BOFP was composed of small molecules, which were mainly composed of monomers such as amino acids and urea, readily available for the uptake by phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria.  相似文献

The Kaluganga River Estuary is one of the main sources of construction sand in Sri Lanka. Salt water intrusion along this estuary due to extensive sand mining has increased over the years. Thus, the focus of the current research is to understand the relationship between river sand mining, salt water intrusion, and the resultant effects on construction sand. Two surveys were conducted along the Kaluganga Estuary along an 11 km stretch from the river mouth at predetermined intervals to measure depth water quality profiles, and to collect sediment samples. These surveys were carried out during maximum spring tide; first in a dry period and then in a wet period, to understand hydrographic effects on the quality of river sands. Sand samples were analysed for absolute chloride content and grain size distribution. Results showed significant salt water intrusion during the dry period, averaging 2,307 μS cm?1 in surface waters throughout the surveyed 11 km stretch along with 3,818 μS cm?1 (average) in bottom waters up to 5.6 km upstream from the river mouth causing above normal chloride content in the bottom sandy sediments. The high chloride content in bottom sands was recorded up to 5.5 km from the river mouth making them unsuitable for construction purposes. However, during wet period, salt water intrusion levels in the bottom waters were insignificant (average 61 μS cm?1) and the chloride content in bottom sediments was very low. This study highlighted the requirement for regulations on river estuary sandmining for construction purposes.  相似文献

Combustion of coals in thermal power plants is one of the major sources of environmental pollution due to generation of huge amounts of ashes, which are disposed off in large ponds in the vicinity of the thermal power plants. This problem is of particular significance in India, which utilizes coals of very high ash content (∼55 wt%). Since the thermal power plants and the ash ponds are located in densely populated areas, there is potential chance for contamination of soil and groundwater of the surrounding areas from the toxic trace elements in the ash. An attempt has been made to study the extent of soil contamination around one of the largest thermal power plants of India located at Kolaghat, West Bengal India. Chemical analysis of the top soils and the soils collected from the different depth profiles surrounding the ash ponds, show that the top soils are enriched in the trace elements Mo, As, Cr, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Be, V, Zn, which show maximum enrichment (2–5) in the top soils collected from all the soil profiles. These elements are also enriched in the pond ash. Since there are no other sources of industrial effluents, it can be said that the enrichment of the trace elements (Mn, Co, Mo, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Ni, Be, V) is attributed to their input from ash from the disposal pond. The study has been further strengthened by log-normal distribution pattern of the elements.  相似文献

Analysis of repeated levelings conducted by the National Geodetic Survey indicates a zone of anomalous relative subsidence in the vicinity of Pecos, Texas. The subsidence appears to have resulted from the decline of water level due to pumping from unconsolidated stream-deposited alluvium of Cenozoic age. Maximum observed vertical ground movement relative to benchmarks outside the zone of pronounced subsidence exceeded 200 mm between 1934 and 1956. The decline in the water table was as much as 60 m during approximately the same period. The subsiding region is about 30 km wide and 50 km long.  相似文献

The 18O and 2H (HDO) compositions are summarized for sampled springs (n = 81) within the Elwha watershed (≈692 km2) on the northern Olympic Peninsula. Samples, collected during 2001–2009, of springs (n = 158), precipitation (n = 520), streams (n = 176), and firn (n = 3) assisted the determinations for meteoric composition of recharge waters. The local mean water line (LMWL) is defined as δ2H = 8.2δ18O − 9.3 for the watershed. Recharge history is surmised from groundwater ages ranging from 5 ± 3 years (apparent 85Kr) to 9,490 ± 420 14C cal years BP. About 56% of the springs were recharged over the last 1,000 years while 13% of springs were recharged over 5,000 years ago. Spring HDO values fluctuate between −11.8 to −15.6‰ δ18O and −90.9 to −119.4‰ δ2H. Deuterium excess values predominate around 4–6‰. The HDO proxy records from springs suggest a pronounced paleoclimate shift in air masses near 5,000 year BP on the Peninsula.  相似文献

2 study area was assessed with respect to its heavy-metal load on the basis of the current guideline values. The heavy-metal loads of the soils in the study area have ranges of <0.2–200 mg kg−1 for Cd, <10–30,000 mg kg−1 for Pb, 7–10,000 mg kg−1 for Cu and 50–55,000 mg kg−1 for Zn. Mobility of the heavy metals was determined by extraction at different pH values. The acid neutralisation capacity (ANCx) at these pH values was also determined to estimate the probability that the pH can drop to pH=x. The ANC values in the study area ranged from 6 to 3000 mmol H+ kg−1, from −33 to 800 mmol H+ kg−1 and from −74 to 160 mmol H+ kg−1 for ANC3.5, ANC5.0 and ANC6.2, respectively. Together with pedological data, the extraction experiments permit differentiation between soil units that have been placed in the same environmental hazard class on the basis of total heavy-metal loads. Loess is mainly distributed in arid and semiarid areas of the world, and water is essential and precious in the loess areas. Water is also an important factor inducing various geohazards and soil erosion in the loess areas. The thematic issue of Environmental Earth Sciences was edited to reflect the latest research on water and water-related themes in the loess areas of the world, especially on the Chinese Loess Plateau. This editorial introduced the background and initiative of editing this thematic issue, and it also introduced briefly the water environment projects currently underway on the Chinese Loess Plateau such as the grain for green project, the huge land creation project, and the sponge city project. The papers included in the thematic issue were also introduced to give readers a general understanding of their main research points. Finally, some suggestions to boost further water environment research in the loess areas were put forward. All the papers included in the thematic issue will scientifically support the sustainable socio-economic development in the loess areas of the world.  相似文献

The fate of potentially harmful metals (PHM) after their entry into an unpolluted fresh water body depends on the physicochemical and biological parameters of the aquatic ecosystem. This paper considers the effect of pH and suspended particles (SP) on the behavior of Cu, Zn and Cd when they enter a fresh water reservoir. In a field experiment, four mesocosms were constructed in the Novosibirskoye Reservoir to allow systematic variation of SP concentration (15 or 250 mg/L) and pH (8.5 or 6.5). The initial concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cd in the mesocosms were 1000, 1000 and 200 μg/L, respectively. Natural bottom sediments were used to provide additional mineral SP, and water hyacinth was used as a floating plant species. Over 11 days, measurements were made of several indicators: residual metal concentration in solution ([PHM]w); metal concentration in SP ([PHM]s); primary productivity of the phytoplankton community; mass of settled SP; PHM concentration in settled SP; and PHM bioaccumulation by water hyacinth. The ratio [PHM]w/[PHM]s in the water varied in the order Cu < Zn < Cd and was higher at pH 6.5 than at pH 8.5. This observation reflects different PHM sorption (Cu > Zn > Cd) onto mineral SP and PHM biosorption by planktonic organisms. Phytoplankton acts as a renewable source of organic SP and plays an important role in metal removal from the water in the mesocosms. After 11 days the residual concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cd in the mesocosm without SP addition (initial SP concentration was 15 mg/L) were 272, 355 and 84 μg/L, respectively. The residual concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cd in mesocosms with SP addition were 57, 100 and 14 μg/L at pH 8.5 and 80, 172 and 20 μg/L at pH 6.5, respectively. Therefore, addition of SP resulted in faster and more complete removal of metals into the bottom sediments. Floating plants (water hyacinth) accumulated PHM (Cu > Zn > Cd) more effectively at pH 8.5 than at pH 6.5, and PHM concentrations in the roots were higher than in settling SP. The general trends of PHM removal from contaminated water via sedimentation and bioaccumulation are compared with changes of metal speciation in solution.  相似文献

本文应用GMS(Groundwater model System)模型软件对新疆柴窝堡盆地地下水系统进行了模拟调参.根据所调给水度μ值,计算出盆地目前最大的地下可调蓄量约为36.608×108m3.同时结合本区水文地质条件,得出结论:新疆柴窝堡盆地地下水库在取水水源、取水条件、地下库容等方面都具备调蓄水资源的能力.如果用其调蓄水资源,既可以增加水资源的利用量、解决城市季节性缺水问题,又能优化水资源的时空分配,能较好地缓解乌鲁木齐市区的供水不足状况.  相似文献

A chemical factory near Ranipet town in Vellore district, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India produced chromium-based inorganic chemicals. The factory area in granite gnessic terrain receives an average annual rainfall of 1,000 mm. About 1.5 lakh tons of solid wastes rich in hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), spreading over an area of 14,000 m2 (about 3.5 acres), having about 4 m thickness, is accumulated in an open yard within the factory premises. The soil and groundwater in and around the factory area are contaminated with Cr6+ leached from dump site. Cr6+ is carcinogenic in nature and when leached in water can lead to respiratory disorders. Resistivity surveys comprising vertical electrical sounding, multielectrode resistivity imaging, drilling of bore wells, chemical analysis of soil, formation and groundwater samples and bore hole tracer studies were carried out within the factory and adjoining areas to decipher subsurface geology, hydraulic behavior of dyke as natural barrier and lateral and vertical extent of pollution zone in and around the chromium dump site. The data obtained were integrated and interpreted for understanding the pollution migration and its impact on environment. Remedial measures are suggested for containing the contamination.  相似文献

The unbridled development and use of water resources in the Tarim River basin over the last 50 years have led to a serious degradation of soil (>12×103 km2 of land desertified between the 1960s and 1990s) and water quality (rise in maximum salinity was from 1.3 g l–1 in 1960, to 4.0 g l–1 in 1981–1984, and to 7.8 g l–1 in 1998). Approximately 300 km of the lower reaches of the river course dried up between the 1950s and 1970s, seriously altering the downstream hydrological processes (a 4–6 m drop in groundwater levels from the 1960s to the 1980s, and 0.2 m yr–1 thereafter) and ecosystems (67% and 50% decrease (1958–1978) in Populus euphratica forest acreage and biomass, respectively). Between the 1950s and 1990s, 3820 km2 of P. euphratica forest and 200 km2 of shrub- and grassland were lost in the lower reaches of the Tarim River. In this study, based on estimates of soil organic carbon in desertified lands, it has been found that in the last 30 years (1970–2000), approximately 112 Tg of organic carbon (28% originating in the 0–1.0 m soil profile) has been released into the atmosphere as a result of soil degradation in the Tarim River basin. Intensive anthropogenic disturbance has been one of the foremost factors leading to the deterioration of water resources in this region. The key to solving these problems is to enhance the scientific and technical level of monitoring, management, and restoration of water resources and associated water and soil components of local ecosystems.  相似文献
