The determination of high frequency variations in UT-1 and a component of pole position from a single pass of Doppler observations of a Navy Navigation Satellite is affected by instrument errors and uncertainties in the gravity field and atmospheric drag forces used in computing the satellite orbit. For elevation angles above20°, instrument errors contribute about2 msec to the determination of UT-1 and “.03 to the determination of pole position. Gravity and drag errors contribute about 0“.03 of correlated error. But gravity errors may be inferred by statistical analysis of residuuls after drag errors are reduced by drag-compensating devices aboard future Navy Navigation Satellites. Since20 Doppler stations nominally acquire about100 passes each day, daily observations of UT-1 and pole position could achieve precisions of0.2 msec and “.005, respectively, assuming half the passes contribute to the determination of each component of pole position. The current accuracy of Doppler results for two day solutions is about50 cm for pole position and1 msec for high frequency variations in UT-1.  相似文献

Seasonal and latitude dependent corrections to the gravity and height anomalies are developed in order to account for the neglect of the atmospheric masses outside the geold, when using Stokes’ equation. It is shown that the atmospheric correction to gravity at sea level is almost constant, equal to0.871 mgals with a variation of2 μ gals whereas the height anomaly correction varies between −0.1 cm and −1.3 cm. Further, when the combined latitudinal/seasonal dependence is neglected in the atmospheric corrections, the maximum error introduced is of the order of40 μ gals for the gravity corrections and0.7 cm for the height anomaly corrections.

Since the beginning of the International Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) Experiment, IGEX, in October 1998, the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) has acted as an analysis center providing precise GLONASS orbits on a regular basis. In CODE's IGEX routine analysis the Global Positioning System (GPS) orbits and Earth rotation parameters are introduced as known quantities into the GLONASS processing. A new approach is studied, where data from the IGEX network are combined with GPS observations from the International GPS Service (IGS) network and all parameters (GPS and GLONASS orbits, Earth rotation parameters, and site coordinates) are estimated in one processing step. The influence of different solar radiation pressure parameterizations on the GLONASS orbits is studied using different parameter subsets of the extended CODE orbit model. Parameterization with three constant terms in the three orthogonal directions, D, Y, and X (D = direction satellite–Sun, Y = direction of the satellite's solar panel axis), and two periodic terms in the X-direction, proves to be adequate for GLONASS satellites. As a result of the processing it is found that the solar radiation pressure effect for the GLONASS satellites is significantly different in the Y-direction from that for the GPS satellites, and an extensive analysis is carried out to investigate the effect in detail. SLR observations from the ILRS network are used as an independent check on the quality of the GLONASS orbital solutions. Both processing aspects, combining the two networks and changing the orbit parameterization, significantly improve the quality of the determined GLONASS orbits compared to the orbits stemming from CODE's IGEX routine processing. The impact of accelerometry on CHAMP orbit determination
The contribution of the STAR accelerometer to the CHAMP orbit precision is evaluated and quantified by means of the following results: orbital fit to the satellite laser ranging (SLR) observations, GPS reduced-dynamic vs SLR dynamic orbit comparisons, and comparison of the measured to the modeled non-gravitational accelerations (atmospheric drag in particular). In each of the four test periods in 2001, five CHAMP arcs of 2 days' length were analyzed. The mean RMS-of-fit of the SLR observations of the orbits computed with STAR data or the non-gravitational force model were 11 and 24 cm, respectively. If the accelerometer calibration parameters are not known at least at the few percent level, the SLR orbit fit deteriorates. This was tested by applying a 10% error to the along-track scale factor of the accelerometer, which increased the SLR RMS-of-fit on average to 17 cm. Reference orbits were computed employing the reduced-dynamic technique with GPS tracking data. This technique yields the most accurate orbit positions thanks to the estimation of a large number of empirical accelerations, which compensate for dynamic modeling errors. Comparison of the SLR orbits, computed with STAR data or the non-gravitational force model, to the GPS-based orbits showed that the SLR orbits employing accelerometer observations are twice as accurate. Finally, comparison of measured to modeled accelerations showed that the level of geomagnetic activity is highly correlated with the atmospheric drag model error, and that the largest errors occur around the geomagnetic poles. Differential tracking of theGPS satellites in high-earth orbit provides a powerful relative positioning capability, even when a relatively small continental U.S. fiducial tracking network is used with less than one-third of the fullGPS constellation. To demonstrate this capability, we have determined baselines of up to2000 km in North America by estimating high-accuracyGPS orbits and ground receiver positions simultaneously. The2000 km baselines agree with very long baseline interferometry(VLBI) solutions at the level of1.5 parts in10 8 and showrms daily repeatability of0.3–2 parts in10 8. The orbits determined for the most thoroughly trackedGPS satellites are accurate to better than1 m. GPS orbit accuracy was assessed from orbit predictions, comparisons with independent data sets, and the accuracy of the continental baselines determined along with the orbits. The bestGPS orbit strategies included data arcs of at least one week, process noise models for tropospheric fluctuations, estimation ofGPS solar pressure coefficients, and combined processing ofGPS carrier phase and pseudorange data. For data arcs of two weeks, constrained process noise models forGPS dynamic parameters significantly improved the solutions.

Abstract

1. In geodetic work a ‘Laplace Point’ connotes a place where both longitude and azimuth have been observed astronomically. Geodetic surveys emanate from an “origin” O, whose coordinates are derived from astronomical observations: and positions of any other points embraced by the survey can be calculated on the basis of an assumed figure of reference which in practice is a spheroid formed by the revolution of an ellipse about its minor axis. The coordinates (latitude = ?, longitude = λ and azimuth = A) so computed are designated “geodetic”.

By interferometric analysis ofGPS phase observations made at Owens Valley, Mojave, and Mammoth Lakes, California, we determined the coordinate components of the71–245–313 km triangle of baselines connecting these sites. A separate determination was made on each of four days, April 1–4, 1985. The satellite ephemerides used in these determinations had been derived from observations on other baselines. Therms scatters of the four daily determinations of baseline vector components about their respective means ranged from a minimum of6 mm for the north component of the71-km baseline to a maximum of34 mm for the vertical component of the245-km baseline. To test accuracy, we compared the mean of ourGPS determinations of the245-km baseline between Owens Valley and Mojave with independent determinations by others using very-long-baseline interferometry(VLBI) and satellite laser ranging(SLR). TheGPS-VLBI difference was within 2 parts in10 7 for every vector component. TheGPS-SLR difference was within6 parts in10 8 in the horizontal coordinates, but83 mm in height.

Following an earlier recognition of degraded monthly geopotential recovery from GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) due to prolonged passage through a short repeat (low order resonant) orbit, we extend these insights also to CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) and GOCE (Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer). We show wide track-density variations over time for these orbits in both latitude and longitude, and estimate that geopotential recovery will be as widely affected as well within all these regimes, with lesser track density leading to poorer recoveries. We then use recent models of atmospheric density to estimate the future orbit of GRACE and warn of degraded performance as other low order resonances are encountered in GRACE’s free fall. Finally implications for the GOCE orbit are discussed.

Summary During July of 1985, Aero Service conducted aGPS research project over a900 square km area in the Sacramento Valley of California. The project was partially funded by the California Department of Water Resources and was coordinated with the Sacramento office of U.S.G.S. The survey was designed to evaluate the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability ofMACROMETER II technology, as an alternative to conventional leveling techniques, for the monitoring of land subsidence. Thirty independent baseline vectors were determined between21 pre-existing benchmark locations. The majority of baseline vectors measured approximately10 km in length and were observed in a highly productive mode of three,1-hour observations per day. Six baseline vectors ranging from34 to56 km in length were observed as single day, 3.5 hour observations. In all cases the integer values ofL 1 andL 2 double-differenced phase biases were determined. The relative positions of stations in the network were determined to within1 part per million(1 ppm) in both horizontal coordinates, and about1.6 ppm in the vertical. Operational aspects of the project are described. Project results are examined with emphasis on the added benefits of dual-frequency measurements; the repeatability of interferometric determinations of individual baseline vectors; and the three-dimensional vector closure of the networks as a whole.

Summary At Florence, in 1955, it was accepted that, in the problems of levelling, the notion ofpotential was scientifically clear, and that the altitude could derive from it only through a conventional process. In the same manner, when we want to have a geometric reference of the points at the earth surface, we use the coordinates (X Y Z) in thegeneral cartesian trihedron as fundamental unknowns, the geodetic coordinates (λϕH) deriving from (X Y Z) through a conventional process. Practically, in order to set up the observation equations, it is necessary to define local trihedrons (laplacian trihedrons), deriving from the cartesian general system through a fixed transformation, and to refer all the unknowns in these local trihedrons. All the observations used in Geodesy can be expressed simply and without any singularity in these local trihedrons. The links between classical geodetic nets, the astrogeodesy, the combination between classical and spatial geodesy, become easier. In astronomical controls, “longitude, latitude, azimut” must be replaced by: W-E deflection, N-S deflection and Laplace azimuth. Thus all the observation equations can be set, even in polar regions. A practical application of the new formulae was done successfully by L.F. Gregerson (Geodetic Survey of Canada).

Apropos laser tracking to GPS satellites
. Laser tracking to GPS satellites (PRN5 and 6) provides an opportunity to compare GPS and laser systems directly and to combine data of both in a single solution. A few examples of this are given in this study. The most important results of the analysis are that (1) daily SLR station coordinate solutions could be generated with a few cm accuracy; (2) coordinates of nine stations were determined in a 2.3-year-long arc solution; (3) the contribution of laser data on the `SLR-GPS' combined orbit, resulting from the simultaneous processing of SLR and GPS data, is significant and (4) laser-only orbits have an accuracy of 10–20 cm, 1-day predictions of SLR orbits differ from IGS orbits by about 20–40 cm, 2-day predictions by 50–60 cm. Fast spherical collocation: theory and examples
It has long been known that a spherical harmonic analysis of gridded (and noisy) data on a sphere (with uniform error for a fixed latitude) gives rise to simple systems of equations. This idea has been generalized for the method of least-squares collocation, when using an isotropic covariance function or reproducing kernel. The data only need to be at the same altitude and of the same kind for each latitude. This permits, for example, the combination of gravity data at the surface of the Earth and data at satellite altitude, when the orbit is circular. Suppose that data are associated with the points of a grid with N values in latitude and M values in longitude. The latitudes do not need to be spaced uniformly. Also suppose that it is required to determine the spherical harmonic coefficients to a maximal degree and order K. Then the method will require that we solve K systems of equations each having a symmetric positive definite matrix of only N × N. Results of simulation studies using the method are described. The joint Taiwan–US mission FORMOSAT-3/ COSMIC (COSMIC) was launched on April 17, 2006. Each of the six satellites is equipped with two POD antennas. The orbits of the six satellites are determined from GPS data using zero-difference carrier-phase measurements by the reduced dynamic and kinematic methods. The effects of satellite center of mass (COM) variation, satellite attitude, GPS antenna phase center variation (PCV), and cable delay difference on the COSMIC orbit determination are studied. Nominal attitudes estimated from satellite state vectors deliver a better orbit accuracy when compared to observed attitude. Numerical tests show that the COSMIC COM must be precisely calibrated in order not to corrupt orbit determination. Based on the analyses of the 5 and 6-h orbit overlaps of two 30-h arcs, orbit accuracies from the reduced dynamic and kinematic solutions are nearly identical and are at the 2–3 cm level. The mean RMS difference between the orbits from this paper and those from UCAR (near real-time) and WHU (post-processed) is about 10 cm, which is largely due to different uses of GPS ephemerides, high-rate GPS clocks and force models. The kinematic orbits of COSMIC are expected to be used for recovery of temporal variations in the gravity field.

Two iterative vector methods for computing geodetic coordinates (φ, h) from rectangular coordinates (x, y, z) are presented. The methods are conceptually simple, work without modification at any latitude and are easy to program. Geodetic latitude and height can be calculated to acceptable precision in one iteration over the height range from −106 to +109 m.

TOPEX/Poseidon orbit error assessment
This paper discusses the accuracy of TOPEX/Poseidon orbits computed at Delft University, Section Space Research & Technology (DUT/SSR&T), from several types of tracking data,i.e. SLR, DORIS, and GPS. To quantify the orbit error, three schemes are presented. The first scheme relies on the direct altimeter observations and the covariance of the JGM-2 gravity field. The second scheme is based on crossover difference residuals while the third scheme uses the differences of dynamic orbit solutions with the GPS reduced-dynamic orbit. All three schemes give comparable results and indicate that the radial orbit error of TOPEX/Poseidon is 3–4 cm. From the orbit comparisons with GPS reduced dynamic, both the along-track and cross-track errors of the dynamic orbit solutions were found to be within 10–15 cm.

Abstract

In the original geodetic series in Southern Rhodesia—completed by Mr Alexander Simms in 1901—the geographical coordinates of all stations were referred to the point SALISBURYas origin. The coordinates of SALISBURY were fixed by interchange of telegraphic signals with the Royal Observatory at the Cape for longitude, combined with astronomical determinations of time, latitude, and azimuth (see Vol. III, “Geodetic Survey of South Africa”).
