On the assumption that solar flares are due to instabilities which occur in current sheets in the Sun's atmosphere, one may classify magnetic-field configurations associated with flares into two types. One is characterized by closed current sheets, magnetic-field lines adjacent to these sheets beginning and ending at the Sun's surface. The other is characterized by open current sheets, magnetic-field lines adjacent to these sheets beginning at the Sun's surface but extending out into interplanetary space. Flares associated with open current sheets can produce Type III radio bursts and high-energy-particle events, but flares associated with closed current sheets cannot. The flare of July 6, 1966 apparently consisted of one flare of each type.  相似文献

DOUBLE-LOOP CONFIGURATION OF SOLAR FLARES   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Hanaoka  Yoichiro 《Solar physics》1997,173(2):319-346
We analyzed several flares, which are presumed to be caused by interactions between an emerging loop and an overlying loop. We call such a basic combination of loops a double-loop configuration, and we reveal its topology on the basis of the microwave and soft X-ray observations of the flares and the magnetograms. In many cases, the magnetic field of the flare loops shows a bipolar + remote unipolar structure, rather than a quadrapole structure. The footpoints of two loops are distributed in three magnetic patches, and two of the footpoints of the loops, one from the emerging loop and the other from the overlying loop, are included in a single magnetic polarity patch. Therefore, the two loops form a three-legged structure, and the two loops are not anti-parallel as assumed in the traditional reconnection models. Typically, the emergence of a parasitic polarity near the major preceding-polarity region or the following one in an active region creates this configuration, but, in one of the analyzed flares, two active regions are involved in the configuration. Not only the flares, but various other active phenomena – microflares, thermal plasma flows like jets, and surges – occur in the same magnetic configuration. Hence, the interaction between two loops, which forms the three-legged structure, is an important source of the various types of activity.  相似文献

High resolution photographic magnetograms are compared with H filtergrams (both on- and off - band) for a wide variety of solar features. It is verified that H filaments overlie neutral lines or bands and that H plages always occur at magnetic field clumps. However, the brightness of H plages bear no relation to magnetic field strength or polarity, and the direction of the magnetic field with respect to threads and filaments remains obscure. Counter-examples can be found for virtually every rule that has been formulated so far.Basic questions about the usefulness and final research goal of filtergrams and magnetograms are raised. It is shown that neither filtergram or magnetogram alone is capable of furnishing a unique solution. It is suggested that the proper direction for research is to use magnetograms, together with (as yet unspecified) additional sources of data, to understand H structures.  相似文献

The active region NOAA 6555 had several locations of highly sheared magnetic field structure, yet, only one of them was the site for all the five X-class flares during its disk passage in March 1991. The pre-flare observations of high-resolution H filtergrams, vector magnetograms and H Dopplergrams of the 2B/X5.3 flare on 25 March 1991 show that the flaring site was characterized by a new rising emerging flux region (EFR) near the highly sheared magnetic field configuration. The polarity axis of the emerging flux was nearly perpendicular to the pre-existing magnetic neutral line. The location of the EFR was the site of initial brightening in H. The post-flare magnetograms show higher magnetic shear at the flare location compared to the post-flare magnetograms, which might indicate that the EFR was sheared at the time of its emergence. As the new EFR coincided with the occurrence of the flare, we suggest that it might have triggered the observed flare. Observations from Big Bear Solar Observatory and Marshall Space Flight Center also show that there was emergence of new flux at the same location prior to two other X-class flares. We find that out of five observed X-class flares in NOAA 6555, at least in three cases there are clear signatures of flare-related flux emergence. Therefore, it is concluded that EFRs might play an important role in destabilizing the observed sheared magnetic structures leading to large X-class flares of NOAA 6555.  相似文献

Sunspot associated H-flares and microwave bursts occurring during the period 1972 to 1974 have been examined in relation to the magnetic strength and configurations of the sunspots and sunspot groups (abbreviated as spots). Important results obtained are: (i) percentage occurrences of flares exceeds those of microwave bursts up to a magnetic field strength of 2000 G while the reverse is true for higher field strength of spots, (ii) flare productivity (average number of flares per spot) and also burst productivity are comparatively higher in the case of and types of spots than in the case of other types of spots, (iii) the above productivities are predominantly high when magnetic configuration of spots changes during their life time, and (iv) impulsive type of microwave bursts are more associated with spots having changing type of magnetic configuration.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new parameter, the shear angle of vector magnetic fields, , to describe the non-potentiality of magnetic fields in active regions, which is defined as the angle between the observed vector magnetic field and its corresponding current-free field. In the case of highly inclined field configurations, this angle is approximately equal to the angular shear, , defined by Hagyardet al. (1984). The angular shear, , can be considered as the projection of the shear angle, , on the photosphere. For the active region studied, the shear angle, , seems to have a better and neater correspondence with flare activity than does . The shear angle, , gives a clearer explanation of the non-potentiality of magnetic fields. It is a better measure of the deviation of the observed magnetic field from a potential field, and is directly related to the magnetic free energy stored in non-potential fields.  相似文献

A model of interplanetary and coronal magnetic fields   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A model of the large-scale magnetic field structure above the photosphere uses a Green's function solution to Maxwell's equations. Sources for the magnetic field are related to the observed photospheric field and to the field computed at a source surface about 0.6 R above the photosphere. The large-scale interplanetary magnetic field sector pattern is related to the field pattern at this source surface. The model generates magnetic field patterns on the source surface that compare well with interplanetary observations. Comparisons are shown with observations of the interplanetary magnetic field obtained by the IMP-3 satellite.  相似文献

Using a photospheric magnetogram of the solar activity complex HR 16862, 16863, 16864 at the end of May 1980 as boundary data a sequence of three-dimensional force-free magnetic fields with spatially constant ( defined by the equation × B = B) is calculated, including numerical field-line tracing. The field is assumed not to be frozen-in and ¦¦, which is a measure of the magnetic free energy, is assumed to increase with time due to some dynamo mechanism. Variation of , starting from = 0, produces a catastrophe-like change of the topology of a field-line system corresponding to an arch filament system connecting the leading spot of HR 16863 with the trailing spot of HR 16862. This topological change is interpreted as causing a series of large homologous flares with synchronous flaring in the two spots. The catastrophe-like behaviour of the field topology is attributed to the nonlinear field-line equations.  相似文献

The flux-rope-fibre model of solar magnetic fields is developed further to cover post-spot evolution of the fields, faculae, and the influence of magnetic fields on some convective motions. (i) Unipolar magnetic regions of a strongly dominant polarity are explained, as are some fields outside the network, and some tiny reversed polarity fields. (ii) The migration of magnetic regions is explained: the following regions to the poles where most of the flux just vanishes and the preceding towards the equator. (iii) The model explains the rotation of the gross pattern of background fields with a period of 27 days. It explains the puzzling features of active longitudes and of magnetic longitudes extending across the equator. (iv) The magnetic model provides a framework for the various chromospheric fine structures, the rosettes, bushes, double chains, mottles and spicules. It provides qualitative models of these features and points the way to a very complicated quantitative model of the network. (v) Several new convective patterns are described and explained in terms of magnetic stresses. The first is the moat around sunspots, which replaces the supergranule motions there. The second is the long-lived (4–7 days) supergranule cell enclosed by strong fields. The third is a small-scale () convective motion, and the fourth is aligned or long granules, both caused by small-scale magnetic fields. (vi) Photospheric line faculae and photospheric continuum faculae are different phenomena. The former, like the chromospheric faculae, are caused by Alfvén-wave heating. The latter are caused by a new small-scale convective motion. (vii) A model of the 3-min oscillation is described.  相似文献

The WN5 star HD 50896 is a well known variable star but the cause of the variations is uncertain. As part of an extensive observing campaign on HD 50896, 68 spectra were obtained with the AAT and UCL echelle spectrograph over three nights in January 1991. The variations seen in the emission line profiles of He II 4686, He II 4860, N V 4945 and N V 4603, 4620, sampling different regions of the wind, are described. Gross night-to-night changes are seen in the tops of all the emission lines, with the pattern of variability being different for each line, as a consequence of the different line formation regions. The edges of the emission line profiles are seen to shift but not in a systematic way, as expected for binary motion. In terms of hourly variations which monitor the propagation of instabilities in the wind, distinct blobs are seen moving outwards through the emission line profiles of the He II lines but are absent in NV 4945. This appears to indicate that, at least for the epoch of these observations, the instabilities develop farther out in the wind than the N V formation region and may well rule out photospheric-induced wind instabilities.  相似文献

The tidal field caused by the second order zonal harmonic of the gravitational field of a planet is discussed according to the fernwirkungsgesetz (principle of local action) of Weyl (1921) introducing an accurate and simple form of the gravitational potential of the planet in elliptic coordinates. It is seen that the tidal field can be described at each point as a small rotation of the local canonical frame which causes a libration and a precession of the axis of rotation of the satellites of the planet. It is also shown that at each point P, is one third of the angle between the line of force through P and the line from P to the center of mass of the planet. All the formulae obtained, to compute and , are in closed form.  相似文献

The position of bright knots of 30 flares at their very beginning relative to the high-resolution isogauss maps of the longitudinal component (H ) and maps of the transverse component (H ) of magnetic field are considered for seven days during the passage of the active and large spot group in Sept. 1963 (see Table I and maps on Figures 1–8).The flare bright knots occur simultaneously in regions of opposite magnetic polarity, and the majority of these knots are adjacent to neutral line H = 0, although not coinciding precisely with this line (Figure 9). Lenticular form of flare knots and the motions of bright material of flares is restrained by transversal field H . Also flares are closely associated (83%) with so-called bifurcated regions, where specific crossing of transverse components takes place (Figures 4–5). There is well-expressed (80%) coincidence of flare knots with the strongest (positive or negative) electric currents as determined from the relation j = c/4 rot H. The relation of results obtained to some existing theories of flares is briefly discussed.U.S. Nat. Acad. of Science - U.S.S.R. Acad. Nauk. Quasi-steady high-temperature current sheets are an energy source during the main or hot phase of solar flares. Such sheets are shown to be stabilized with respect to the tearing instability by a small transverse component of magnetic field existing in the sheets.  相似文献

Using the flux-transport equation in the absence of sources, we study the relation between a highly peaked polar magnetic field and the poleward meridional flow that concentrates it. If the maximum flow speed m greatly exceeds the effective diffusion speed /R, then the field has a quasi-equilibrium configuration in which the poleward convection of flux via meridional flow approximately balances the equatorward spreading via supergranular diffusion. In this case, the flow speed () and the magnetic field B() are related by the steady-state approximation () (/R)B()/B() over a wide range of colatitudes from the poles to midlatitudes. In particular, a general flow profile of the form sin p cos q which peaks near the equator (q p) will correspond to a cos n magnetic field at high latitudes only if p = 1 and m = n /R. Recent measurements of n 8 and 600 km2 s–1 would then give m 7 m s–1.  相似文献

We examine observational evidence concerning energy release in solar flares. We propose that different processes may be operative on four different time scales: (a) on the sub-second time scale of sub-bursts which are a prominent feature of mm-wave microwave records; (b) on the few-seconds time scale of elementary bursts which are a prominent feature of hard X-ray records; (c) on the few-minutes time scale of the impulsive phase; and (d) on the tens-of-minutes or longer time scale of the gradual phase. We propose that the concentration of magnetic field into magnetic knots at the photosphere has important consequences for the coronal magnetic-field structure such that the magnetic field in this region may be viewed as an array of elementary flux tubes. The release of the free energy of one such tube may produce an elementary burst. The development of magnetic islands during this process may be responsible for the sub-bursts. The impulsive phase may be simply the composite effect of many elementary bursts. We propose that the gradual phase of energy release, with which flares typically begin and with which many flares end, involves a steady process of reconnection, whereas the impulsive phase involves a more rapid stochastic process of reconnection which is a consequence of mode interaction. In the case of two-ribbon flares, the late part of the gradual phase may be attributed to reconnection of a large current sheet which is being produced as a result of filament eruption. A similar process may be operative in smaller flares. Also, Department of Applied Physics, Stanford University.  相似文献

The evolution of solar flare nomenclature is reviewed in the context of the paradigm shift, in progress, from flares to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in solar-terrestrial physics. Emphasis is placed on: the distinction between eruptive (Class II) flares and confined (Class I) flares; and the underlying similarity of eruptive flares inside (two-ribbon flares) and outside (flare-like brightenings accompanying disappearing filaments) of active regions. A list of research questions/problems raised, or brought into focus, by the new paradigm is suggested; in general, these questions bear on the interrelationships and associations of the two classes (or phases) of flares. Terms such as eruptive flare and eruption (defined to encompass both the CME and its associated eruptive flare) may be useful as nominal links between opposing viewpoints in the flares vs CMEs controversy.  相似文献

We present the analysis of observations of the August flares at Big Bear and Tel Aviv, involving monochromatic movies, magnetograms and spectra. In each flare the observations fit a model of particle acceleration in the chromosphere with emission produced by impact and by heating by the energetic electrons and protons. The region showed inverted polarity and high gradients from birth, and flares appear due to strong magnetic shears and gradients across the neutral line produced by sunspot motions. Post flare loops show a strong change from sheared, force-free fields parallel to potential-field-like loops, perpendicular to the neutral line above the surface. We detected fast (5 s duration) small (1') flashes in 3835 at the footpoints of flux loops in the August 2 impulsive flare at 1838 UT, which may be explained by dumping of > 50 keV electrons accelerated in individual flux loops. The flashes show excellent time and intensity agreement with > 45 keV X-rays. In the less impulsive 2000 UT flare a less impulsive wave of emission in 3835 moved with the separating footpoints. The thick target model of X-ray production gives a consistent model for X-ray, 3835 and microwave emission in the 18:38 UT event.Spectra of the August 7 flare show emission 12 Å FWHM in flare kernels, but only 1 to 2 Å wide in the rest of the flare. The kernels thus produce most of the H emission. The total emission in H in the August 4 and August 7 flares was about 2 × 1030 erg. We belive this dependable value more accurate than previous larger estimates for great flares. The time dependence of total H emission agrees with radio and X-ray data much better than area measurements which depend on the weaker halo.Absorption line spectra show a large (6 km/s-1) photospheric velocity discontinuity across the neutral line, corresponding to sheared flow across that line. This work has been supported by NASA under NGR 05 002 034, NSF Atmospheric Sciences program under GA 24015, and AFCRL under FI9628-73-C-0085.  相似文献
