High-power, large-aperture (HPLA) radars detect the plasma that forms in the vicinity of a meteoroid and moves approximately at its velocity; reflections from these plasmas are called head echoes. For over a decade, HPLA radars have been detecting head echoes with peak velocity distributions >50 km/s. These results have created some controversy within the field of meteor physics because previous data, including spacecraft impact cratering studies, optical and specular meteor data, indicate that the peak of the velocity distribution to a set limiting mass should be <20 km/s [Love, S.G., Brownlee, D.E., 1993. Science 262, 550-553]. Thus the question of whether HPLA radars are preferentially detecting high-velocity meteors arises. In this paper we attempt to address this question by examining both modeled and measured head echo data using the ALTAIR radar, collected during the Leonid 1998 and 1999 showers. These data comprise meteors originating primarily from the North Apex sporadic meteor source. First, we use our scattering theory to convert measured radar-cross-section (RCS) to electron line density and mass, as well as to convert modeled electron line density and mass to RCS. We subsequently compare the dependence between mass, velocity, mean-free-path, RCS and line density using both the measured and modeled data by performing a multiple, linear regression fit. We find a strong correlation between derived mass and velocity and show that line density is approximately proportional to mass times velocity3.1. Next, we determine the cumulative mass index using subsets of our data and use this mass index, along with the results of our regression fit, to weight the velocity distribution. Our results show that while there does indeed exist a bias in the measured head echo velocity distribution, it is smaller than those calculated using traditional specular trail data due to the different scattering mechanism, and also includes a bias against the low-mass, very high-velocity meteoroids.  相似文献

Large-aperture radars detect the high-density plasma that forms in the vicinity of a meteoroid and moves approximately at its velocity; reflections from these plasmas are called head echoes. To determine the head plasma density and configuration, we model the interaction of a radar wave with the plasma without using assumptions about plasma density. This paper presents a scattering method that enables us to convert measurements of radar cross-section (RCS) from a head echo into plasma density by applying a spherical scattering model. We use three methods to validate our model. First, we compare the maximum plasma densities determined from the spherical solution using 30 head echoes detected simultaneously at VHF and UHF. Second, we use a head echo detected simultaneously at VHF, UHF and L-band to compare plasma densities at all frequencies. Finally, we apply our spherical solution to 723 VHF head echoes and calculate plasma density, line density and meteoroid mass in order to compare these values with those obtained from a meteoroid ablation and ionization model. In all three comparisons, our results show that the spherical solution produces consistent results across a wide frequency range and agrees well with the single-body ablation model.  相似文献

We examine the gravitational redshift of radiation emitted from within the potential of a cluster. Spectral lines from the intracluster medium (ICM) are redshifted in proportion to the emission-weighted mean potential along the line of sight, amounting to approximately 50 km s-1 at a radius of 100 kpc h-1, for a cluster dispersion of 1200 km s-1. We show that the relative redshifts of different ionization states of metals in the ICM provide a unique probe of the three-dimensional matter distribution. An examination of the reported peculiar velocities of cD galaxies in well-studied Abell clusters reveals that they are typically redshifted by an average of approximately 200 km s-1. This can be achieved by gravity with the addition of a steep central potential associated with the cD galaxy. Note that, in general, gravitational redshifts cause a small overestimate of the recessional velocities of clusters by an average of approximately 20 km s-1.  相似文献

We present a model that relates the width of the broad emission lines of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the Keplerian velocity of an accretion disk at a critical distance from the central black hole. This critical distance falls in a region bounded on the inward side by the transition radius between the radiation pressure- and the gas pressure-dominated region of the accretion disk and on the outward side by the maximum radius below which a stabilizing, radially accreting and vertically outflowing corona exists. We show that in the framework of this picture, the observed range of Hbeta FWHMs from broad-line to narrow-line type 1 AGNs is well reproduced as a function of the accretion rate. This interval of velocities is the only permitted range and goes from approximately 20,000 km s-1 for sub-Eddington accretion rates to approximately 1000 km s-1 for Eddington accretion rates.  相似文献

The Cassini spacecraft has acquired 25 radar altimeter elevation profiles along Titan's surface as of April 2008, and we have analyzed 18 of these for which there are currently reconstructed ephemeris data. Altimeter measurements were collected at spatial footprint sizes from 6-60 km along ground tracks of length 400-3600 km. The elevation profiles yield topographic information at this resolution with a statistical height accuracy of 35-50 m and kilometer-scale errors several times greater. The data exhibit significant variations in terrain, from flat regions with little topographic expression to very rugged Titanscapes. The bandwidth of the transmitted waveform admits vertical resolution of the terrain height to 35 m at each observed location on the surface. Variations in antenna pointing and changes in surface statistics cause the range-compressed radar echoes to exhibit strong systematic and time-variable biases of hundreds of meters in delay. It is necessary to correct the received echoes for these changes, and we have derived correction algorithms such that the derived echo profiles are accurate at the 100 m level for off-nadir pointing errors of 0.3° and 0.6°, for leading edge and echo centroid estimators, respectively. The leading edge of the echo yields the elevation of the highest points on the surface, which we take to be the peaks of any terrain variation. The mean value of the echo delay is more representative of the mean elevation, so that the difference of these values gives an estimate of any local mountain heights. Finding locations where these values diverge indicates higher-relief terrain. Elevation features are readily seen in the height profiles. Several of the passes show mountains of several hundred m altitude, spread over 10's or even 100's of km in spatial extent, so that slopes are very small. Large expanses of sub-100 m topography are commonplace on Titan, so it is rather smooth in many locations. Other areas exhibit more relief, although the overall observed variation in surface height on any pass is less than about 1 km. Some elevation features correspond to observed changes in brightness in Cassini infrared images, but many do not. Correspondence between the imaging SAR ground tracks and the altimeter paths is limited, so that identifying elevation changes with higher resolution SAR features is premature at present.  相似文献

Radial velocities for 144 simple but representative type II bursts were determined from measured frequency time histories. The velocity distribution is peaked in the region between 500 and 700 km s –1 (with the exact value dependent upon the coronal density model assumed) and skewed towards the larger velocities. In 85 % of the cases it was found that the velocities were constant with height. In the remaining 15 % the drift rate decreased drastically at low frequencies. This tended to occur for events having high initial velocities. The measured velocity is dependent upon the properties of the flare event but does not appear to be related to other characteristics of the radio burst. Comparisons show that the group of type II events studied had a velocity distribution which was comparable with that for coronal mass ejection events seen in association with type II bursts. The measured velocities were however statistically smaller than those of interplanetary type II bursts.  相似文献

Results of the analysis of 3261 radar meteor head echoes observed during the Orionid and Lyrid periods by the high-power radar of the Springhill Meteor Observatory are given. Dependence of the occurence of head echoes on the geometrical factors and physical properties of the meteoroids has been studied. Increas of the head echo rates with the elevation of the shower radiant and with the velocity of meteoroids has been observed.  相似文献

We present a statistical analysis of 482 6.7 GHz methanol maser sources from the available literature, on their maser emission and the characteristics of their associated infrared sources. On the color-color diagram, more than 70% of the objects fall within a very small region (0.57 ≤ [25 - 12] ≤ 1.30 and 1.30 ≤[60 - 12] ≤ 2.50). This suggests that 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission occurs only within a very short evolutionary phase during the earliest stage of star formation. The velocity ranges of the masers belong to two main groups: one from 1 to 10 km s^-1, and one from about 11 to 20 km s^-1. These velocity ranges indicate that the masers are probably associated with both disks and outflows. The correlations between the maser and infrared flux densities, and between the maser and infrared luminosities, suggest that far-infrared radiation is a possible pumping mechanism for the masers which most probably originate from some outer molecular envelopes or disks.  相似文献

SiS has been conclusively detected toward Orion-KL via its J = 6-5 and J = 5-4 rotational transitions at 91 and 109 GHz. Line profiles indicate that the species is present at an LSR velocity of 7.5 km s-1 with a half-width at zero power of 36 km s-1. Such characteristics associate SiS with the moderate velocity outflow (V approximately 18 km s-1) centered on IRc2 and observed in thermal SiO, the NH3 "plateau," and OH, H2O, and SiO masers. The column density estimated for SiS in this region is Ntot = 4 x 10(15) cm-2, corresponding to a fractional abundance of f approximately 4 x 10(-9). Such an abundance implies an SiO/SiS ratio of approximately 60 in the outflow material, remarkably close to the cosmic O/S ratio of approximately 40 and contrasting with the SiO/SiS value of > approximately 10(3) predicted by ion-molecule models. This difference is probably a result of the high temperatures and densities present in the outflow, which favor thermal equilibrium abundances similar to those observed in the circumstellar shells of late-type stars rather than "ion-molecule"-type concentrations. In addition to SiS, some twenty new unidentified lines near 91 and 109 GHz were detected toward KL, as well as transitions arising from HC5N, HC13CCN, HCC13CN, O13CS, and, possibly, CH3CH2OH, CH3CHO, and CH3OD.  相似文献

The Tracking and Imaging RAdar (TIRA) at the Research Establishment for Applied Science (FGAN) was used in the L-band (1.33 GHz) to observe the Leonid shower in 1999. The radar beam was pointed directly into the radiant in the constellation Leo to receive “head echoes” from meteoroids when they ablate in the atmosphere at altitudes around 100 km. Two hundred and eighty-seven meteors were observed during 21 h in the early hours of November 17 and 18, 1999. The individual velocities, radiants and rough heliocentric orbits are calculated. Criteria are derived from optically observed Leonids which are then applied to decide whether an echo was created by a Leonid or a background meteoroid. However, in most cases the accuracy in the observational data is not good enough to allow for a clear distinction. Only for 100 meteors the velocity errors were less than 10 km/s. Out of those, 71 could be excluded on a 3σ level to be a Leonid (95 are excluded on a 1σ level). This confirms the theory that the Leonids have dominantly sizes of optical meteoroids with no significant extension in the lower mass range. Therefore, the risk of meteoroid impacts on spacecraft does not increase considerably during a Leonid storm. Background measurements 9 days after the Leonids maximum were taken in 2001 which corroborated the overall results obtained in 1999.  相似文献

Observations are reported of two, possibly three, distinct wave systems in the Hα chromosphere.
  1. Velocity films show waves propagating predominantly outwards along mottles and fibrils from as close as 2000 km to the network axis at velocities of the order of 70 km s-1. The line-of-sight component of the velocity amplitude is estimated to be typically 5 km s-1. The velocities are accompanied by propagating intensity fluctuations. The system is interpreted as one of basically Alfvén waves. Similar waves are observed propagating predominantly outwards along superpenumbral fibrils radiating from a small sunspot.
  2. The velocities in the chromospheric granulation undergo fluctuations of an oscillatory character but without any observable horizontal propagation. The intensities show a close correlation with the velocities, maximum intensity occurring about T/4 after maximum downward velocity. The period is variable across the surface (2.5 min upwards). The intensity-velocity correlation is characteristic of a standing compressional wave.
  3. Intensity cinefilms at Hα line centre show in places a horizontal drift of the chromospheric granulation pattern at about 12 km s-1 without any accompanying vertical velocity fluctuations. It is not known whether this is due to a gas stream at sonic velocities, or to a horizontally propagating sound wave.
The Alfvén wave system is shown to make a significant contribution to coronal heating. Whether the velocity fluctuations in the chromospheric granulation also make an important contribution depends on whether there are upwardly propagating or standing waves; this is not yet established despite the intensity-velocity correlation.  相似文献

Many meteoroids burn up between about 120 km and 70 km, deposit metals and dust and form ionized trails which are detected by radars. Model studies about the influence of neutral or positively charged background dust on the ambipolar diffusion indicate that significant smaller decay times should be observed for weak meteor echoes compared to strong meteor echoes which can affect the estimation of temperatures. The variation of meteor decay times in dependence on echo strength, height, and season was studied using radar observations at 69° N, 22° S, and 67° S. Significantly reduced decay times were found for weak echoes below about 88 km at low latitudes throughout the year, and at high latitudes with the exception of summer. In summer at high latitudes, decreasing decay times of weak and strong meteors are observed at altitudes below about 85 km during the appearance of noctilucent clouds. The impact of reduced decay times on the estimation of neutral temperatures from decay times is discussed.  相似文献

We report the discovery of 45 high-velocity extreme horizontal branch(EHB) stars in the globular cluster Omega Centauri(NGC 5139).The tangential velocities of these EHB stars are determined to be in the range 93~313 km s~(-1),with an average uncertainty of ~27 km s~(-1).The central escape velocity of the cluster is determined to be in the range 60~105 km s~(-1).These EHB stars are significantly more concentrated toward the cluster core compared with other cluster members. The formation mechanisms of these EHB stars are discussed. Our conclusions can be summarized as follows:(1) A comparison of the tangential velocities of these EHB stars to the centra]escape velocity of the cluster shows that most if not all of these EHB stars are unbound to the cluster;(2) These EHB stars obtained high velocities in the central cluster region no longer than ~1 Myr ago and may be subsequently ejected from the cluster in the next ~1 Myr;(3) If the progenitors of these EHB stars were single stars, then they may have experienced a fast mass-loss process. If the progenitors were in close binaries, then they may have formed through disruptions by the intermediate-mass black hole in the cluster center.  相似文献

Light-echo measurements show that SN 1987A is 425 pc behind the LMC disk. It is continuing to move away from the disk at 18 km s-1. Thus, it has been suggested that SN 1987A was ejected from the LMC disk. However, SN 1987A is a member of a star cluster, so this entire cluster would have to have been ejected from the disk. We show that the cluster was formed in the LMC disk, with a velocity perpendicular to the disk of about 50 km s-1. Such high-velocity formation of a star cluster is unusual, having no known counterpart in the Milky Way.  相似文献

A two-dimensional hydrodynamic code has been developed for numerical studies of stellar collisions. The motivation for the study has been the suggestion by Colgate that collisions among stars in a dense galactic core can lead to growth of stellar masses by coalescence and thus to an enhanced rate of supernova activity. The specific results reported here refer to head-on collisions between identical polytropes of index 3 having solar mass and radius. If the polytropes were initially at rest at infinity, then about five percent of the combined mass is lost by ejection following collision. The volatilized mass fraction rises to about 18% for an initial relative collision velocity of 1000 km s–1 at infinite separation, and to about 60% for the 2000 km s–1 case. Since the initial kinetic and gravitational energies balance for a relative velocity of 1512 km s–1 at infinity, it may be seen that net coalescence persists to velocities somewhat in excess of this figure. Mass ejection takes place in two ways simultaneously: (1) by a rapid sideward expulsion of fluid in a massive lateral sheet normal to the collision axis, and (2) as a result of two recoil shocks which lead momentum flows backwards along this axis. The lateral effect has similarities to the expansion of gas into a vacuum; that is, shocks are not involved. However, the ejection of material from the rear colliding hemisphere due to the recoil shocks predominates at low collision velocities. As the velocity increases, both effects strengthen, but the lateral expulsion intensifies more rapidly than the recoil shocks.  相似文献

Given an equation of State, the three equations of mass, momentum and energy conservation determine the vortex free flow fields in a star. The solar data processed by Athay (1966) is a measure of the dissipation of the fluid, while the use of an empirical temperature profile (BCA, 1968) permits values for the gradients in the equations of fluid flow rendering them algebraic, with solutions independent of boundary conditions. This approach serves as a consistency check on the methods with which data have been processed by inquiring to what degree the basic conservation laws have been satified, and by directly implying a velocity field which can be scrutinized for its observational consequences. We find that the most consistent interpretation to this data is that the temperature minimum should not be coincident with flux maximum as the BCD model photosphere is, and that the temperature profile must rise higher at the 1500 km. region above optical depth one. Furthermore, more emissions must occur in the U-V metals at this region to support such a temperature increase, but at least an order of magnitude decrease in H? emission should also be expected, as well as some suppression of the Balmer. As a theoretical consequence horizontal stratification of the velocity field occurs, suggesting either cellular motions or differential rotation with surface velocities as high as 60 km s?1, but on the average near 30 to 40 km s?1, across the solar surface.  相似文献

In this paper, we use radar observations from a 50 MHz radar stationed near Salinas, Puerto Rico, to study the variability of specular as well as non-specular meteor trails in the E-region ionosphere. The observations were made from 18:00 to 08:00 h AST over various days in 1998 and 1999 during the Coqui II Campaign [Urbina et al., 2000, Geophys. Rev. Lett. 27, 2853–2856]. The radar system had two sub-arrays, both produced beams pointed to the north in the magnetic meridian plane, perpendicular to the magnetic field, at an elevation angle of approximately 41 degrees. The Coqui II radar is sensitive to at least two types of echoes from meteor trails: (1) Specular reflections from trails oriented perpendicular to the radar beam, and (2) scattering, or, non-specular reflections, from trails deposited with arbitrary orientations. We examine and compare the diurnal and seasonal variability of echoes from specular and non-specular returns observed with the Coqui II radar. We also compare these results with meteor head echo observations made with the Arecibo 430 MHz radar. We use common region observations of these three types of meteor echoes to show that the diurnal and seasonal variability of specular trails, non-specular trails, and head echoes are not equivalent. The implications of these results on global meteor mass flux estimates obtained from specular meteor observations remains to be examined.  相似文献

We present extensive tests of the fast action method (FAM) for recovering the past orbits of mass tracers in an expanding universe from their redshift-space coordinates at the present epoch. The tests focus on the reconstruction of present-day peculiar velocities using mock catalogues extracted from high-resolution N -body simulations. The method allows for a self-consistent treatment of redshift-space distortions by direct minimization of a modified action for a cosmological gravitating system. When applied to ideal, volume-limited catalogues, FAM recovers unbiased peculiar velocities with a one-dimensional, 1σ error of ∼220 km  s−1  , if velocities are smoothed on a scale of  5 h −1  Mpc. Alternatively, when no smoothing is applied, FAM predicts nearly unbiased velocities for objects residing outside the highest density regions. In this second case the 1σ error decreases to a level of ∼150 km  s−1  . The correlation properties of the peculiar velocity fields are also correctly recovered on scales larger than  5 h −1  Mpc. Similar results are obtained when FAM is applied to flux-limited catalogues mimicking the IRAS PSC z survey. In this case FAM reconstructs peculiar velocities with similar intrinsic random errors, while velocity–velocity correlation properties are well reproduced beyond scales of  ∼8 h −1  Mpc. We also show that FAM provides better velocity predictions than other, competing methods based on linear theory or the Zel'dovich approximation. These results indicate that FAM can be successfully applied to presently available galaxy redshift surveys such as IRAS PSC z .  相似文献

Previous observations of spatially-resolved vertical velocity variations in ten lines of Fe i spanning the height range 0 h 1000 km are re-analyzed using velocity weighting functions. The amplitudes and scale heights of granular and oscillatory velocities are determined, as well as those of the remaining unresolved velocities. I find that the optimal representation of the amplitude of the outward-decreasing granular velocities is an exponentially decreasing function of height, with a scale height of 150 km and a velocity at zero height of 1.27 km s–1. The optimal representation of the same quantities for oscillatory velocities is an exponential increase with height, with a scale height of 1100 km and a velocity at zero height of 0.35 km s–1. The remaining unresolved velocities decrease with height, with a scale height of 380 km and a velocity at zero height of 2.3 km s–1.  相似文献

We present the first grating-resolution X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. These spectra reveal many narrow absorption lines from the H-like and He-like ions of O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Ar as well as Fe xvii-Fe xxi L-shell lines. We have also identified several weak emission lines, mainly from O and Ne. The absorption lines are blueshifted by a mean velocity of approximately 440+/-200 km s-1 and are not resolved, indicating a velocity dispersion within the absorbing gas of a few hundred kilometers per second or less. We measure the lines' equivalent widths and compare them with the predictions of photoionization models. The best-fitting model has a microturbulence velocity of 150 km s-1 and a hydrogen column density of 1.3x1022 cm-2. The measured blueshifts and inferred velocity dispersions of the X-ray absorption lines are consistent with those of the strongest UV absorption lines observed in this object. However, simple models that propose to strictly unify the X-ray and UV absorbers have difficulty explaining simultaneously the X-ray and UV absorption-line strengths.  相似文献
