Small-scale magnetic fields can be observed on the Sun in high-resolution G-band filtergrams as magnetic bright points (MBPs). We study Hinode/Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) longitude and latitude scans of the quiet solar surface taken in the G-band in order to characterise the centre-to-limb dependence of MBP properties (size and intensity). We find that the MBP’s sizes increase and their intensities decrease from the solar centre towards the limb. The size distribution can be fitted using a log–normal function. The natural logarithm of the mean (μ parameter) of this function follows a second-order polynomial and the generalised standard deviation (σ parameter) follows a fourth-order polynomial or equally well (within statistical errors) a sine function. The brightness decrease of the features is smaller than one would expect from the normal solar centre-to-limb variation; that is to say, the ratio of a MBP’s brightness to the mean intensity of the image increases towards the limb. The centre-to-limb variations of the intensities of the MBPs and the quiet-Sun field can be fitted by a second-order polynomial. The detailed physical process that results in an increase of a MBP’s brightness and size from Sun centre to the limb is not yet understood and has to be studied in more detail in the future.  相似文献

A daily survey of cool material evolution in the inner parts of the solar corona is now performed at the Pic-du-Midi observatory with an H imaging coronagraph. The total field of the coronagraph allows the detection of emission regions all around the solar limb, up to 0.6 solar radius above the limb. This survey is devoted to the study of coronal events and mass motions in a large range of spatial and time scales. The observing modes are associated with a set of numerical treatment processes to produce images which are calibrated in intensity relative to the solar brightness. Position angles and height above the solar limb of the coronal features are determined. Methods of calibration, sky brightness subtraction, and detection of events are discussed.  相似文献

The Transition Region and Coronal Explorer is a space-borne solar telescope featuring high spatial and temporal resolution. TRACE images emission from solar plasmas in three extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths and several ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths, covering selected ion temperatures from 6000 K to 1 MK. The TRACE UV channel employs special optics to collect high-resolution solar images of the H i L line at 1216 Å, the C iv resonance doublet at 1548 and 1550 Å, the UV continuum near 1550 Å, and also a white-light image covering the spectrum from 2000–8000 Å.We present an analytical technique for creating photometrically accurate images of the C iv resonance lines from the data products collected by the TRACE UV channel. We use solar spectra from several space-borne instruments to represent a variety of solar conditions ranging from quiet Sun to active regions to derive a method, using a linear combination of filtered UV images, to generate an image of solar C iv 1550 Å emission. Systematic and statistical error estimates are also presented. This work indicates that C iv measurements will be reliable for intensities greater than 1014 photons s–1 cm–2 sr–1. This suggests that C iv 1550 Å images will be feasible with statistical error below 20% in the magnetic network, bright points, active regions, flares and other features bright in C iv. Below this intensity the derived image is dominated by systematic error and read noise from the CCD.  相似文献

A new method has recently been developed to obtain the Fried's parameter from observations of granulation outsude the disk centre, based on the different degradation suffered by the images on the directions parallel and perpendicular to the solar limb, due to the geometrical foreshortening. This procedure has been applied to CCD images obtained at the Swedish Solar Tower of the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, with satisfactory results which are presented and discussed.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

In this article we study chromospheric structures (spicules) crossing the solar limb in H images corrected for limb darkening. This correction enabled us to view structures both on the disk and beyond the limb in the same image. The observations were obtained at the Sacramento Peak Observatory at H±0.75 Å. The processed images reveal both bright and dark (relative to the local background) features crossing the limb. We also observed bushes (rosettes) crossing the limb, as well as structures indicating probably arch-shaped mottles beyond the limb.  相似文献

Determining the relative brightness of the solar corona is one of the most critical stages in solar eclipse studies. For this purpose, images taken with different exposures and polarization angles in white-light observations are used. The composite image of each polarization angle is produced by combining the images of different exposures. With the help of the intensity calibration function of these images, the relative intensity of the corona can be calculated. The total brightness of the solar corona is calculated using Stokes parameters obtained from intensity values of three polarization angles. In this study, two methods are presented: the first is used to obtain the intensity calibration function of the photographic material using calibration images, and the second is used to calculate the combined intensity values of images taken with different polarization angles.  相似文献

Units and methods have been devised to express the photometry of solar XUV images. The source and limb-brightened fluxes are given in terms of the sun's quiet central intensity. Measurements made on this system can be meaningfully compared with solar data and with theoretical predictions. Calculations have been made of the XUV distribution for optically thin solar models and results have been converted onto the measurement system. Photometric measurements have been made from four films lent by the Culham and Leicester Laboratories. Certain inconsistencies suggest that the measurement accuracy is not yet good enough for definitive results. However, there is evidence that: (a) the X-ray emission sources are brighter, relative to the quiet sun, than the longer wave EUV sources; (b) X-ray limb photons all escape (i.e. limb optically thin) but EUV limb emission is affected by absorption; and (c) the observed image diameter fits an emission scale height of 0.05 .  相似文献

Two-dimensional macroscopic velocity fields are featured in the calculation of two-dimensional models of the lower solar chromosphere. Relative rms line centre intensity fluctuation data and mean limb darkening data obtained in Mg b and Na D are used together with values of the cross-correlation between line centre brightness and line of sight velocities. It is found that the large scale fluctuation data can be explained by models of the lower solar chromosphere in which the inhomogeneous effects arise only from horizontal, two-dimensional macroscopic velocity fields. It is also shown, however, that the corresponding small scale fluctuation data cannot be explained in a similar manner. The cross-correlation data is found to be a powerful constraint in the computation of two-dimensional models of these regions.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations of the light intensity from the solar crescent before and after totality were made during the eclipses of 7 March, 1970 and 26 February, 1979. Effective wavelengths were determined by interference filters of 20 nm bandwidth. To obtain the limb darkening function, the resulting intensity curves were analyzed by an extension of the method of Julius in which we take into account the actual lunar limb profile. The limb darkening function at 433 nm was obtained for the region 0.937 < sin < 0.9999. Our results are in good agreement with existing center-to-limb measurements in the region of overlap which extends to sin = 0.99. Additional data were obtained at 600 nm for 0.994 < sin < 0.9999. The curves at both wavelengths show a distinctive limb brightening effect at sin = 0.999.  相似文献

A series of spectrograms of the inner solar corona were obtained at the total solar eclipse of 30 May 1965 using a fast spectrograph with a circular slit that recorded the spectrum from 3000 to 9000 at all position angles around the limb simultaneously. In this paper absolute intensity is given as a function of position angle for the stronger lines and the continuum. In the coronal enhancement or condensation centered at heliocentric position angle 293°, absolute intensity is given for 34 forbidden emission lines and the continuum.  相似文献

A new instrument, called a videometer, has been developed to measure solar flare area, peak intensity and integrated intensity in real time. The videometer uses a closed circuit television system to convert an optical H image into electrical signals for measurement. Observations of two Class I flares with the videometer are discussed.  相似文献

The origin and the dynamical evolution of spicules and mottles continue to be a highly interesting research subject. Using high-resolution H observations obtained with the Dunn Solar Telescope of the Sacramento Peak Observatory and an image processing technique for the enhancement of near-limb solar images, we study the dynamics of spicules and mottles as well as their relation. Our image-processing technique is based on the correction for the limb darkening and the use of a directionally sensitive operator, the `MadMax'. The temporal evolution of characteristic cases of spicules, dark and bright mottles, indicates an association between them and supports the suggestion that the magnetic field and probably related forces play a fundamental role in their generation and dynamics. We present characteristic cases of fine bright mottles, observable in the H far wings, that appear in close juxtaposition to dark mottles. The phenomenon appears to be common, suggesting that the velocities derived from marginal resolution spectroscopic observations could be underestimated. Typical examples of individual mottles crossing the solar limb further support the association between spicules and mottles. Finally we show images of arch-shaped mottles above the limb and especially on the disk, confirming the existence of chromospheric small loops. Our image-processing method substantially enhances near-limb observations and permits an insight into the studies of the very fine chromospheric structures.  相似文献

We describe the automated extraction of active regions (ARs) or plages from the European Grid of Solar Observations (EGSO) Solar Feature Catalogue using a region-growing technique. In this work, Hα and Ca ii K3 solar images from the Meudon Observatory and EUV solar images from the SOHO/EIT instrument were used. For better detection accuracy, the statistical properties of each quarter of a full disk solar image are used to define local intensity thresholds for an initial segmentation that helps to define AR seeds. Median filtering and morphological operations are applied to the resulting binary image in order to remove noise and to merge broken regions. The centroids of each labelled region are used as seeds, from which a region-growing procedure starts. Statistics-based local thresholding is also applied to compute upper- and lower- threshold intensity values defining the spatial extents of the regions. The detection results obtained with the resulting automated thresholding and region-growing (ATRG) procedure are compared day-by-day with the synoptic maps manually generated by the Meudon Observatory and NOAA for 2 months in 2002 and more coarsely over a 5-year period. The moderate correlation found between our detection results and those produced manually on the other data sets reveals a need for a unified active region definition. As an application of the SFC for ARs we present the tracking of the active region AR NOAA 10484 during its appearance on the solar disk from 19–26 October 2003 and compare its intensity variations for Hα and Fe xii 195 Å wavelengths.  相似文献

We have analyzed Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spectral and slit-jaw observations of a quiet region near the South Pole. In this article we present an overview of the observations, the corrections, and the absolute calibration of the intensity. We focus on the average profiles of strong (Mg?ii h and k, C?ii and Si?iv), as well as of weak spectral lines in the near ultraviolet (NUV) and the far ultraviolet (FUV), including the Mg?ii triplet, thus probing the solar atmosphere from the low chromosphere to the transition region. We give the radial variation of bulk spectral parameters as well as line ratios and turbulent velocities. We present measurements of the formation height in lines and in the NUV continuum from which we find a linear relationship between the position of the limb and the intensity scale height. We also find that low forming lines, such as the Mg?ii triplet, show no temporal variations above the limb associated with spicules, suggesting that such lines are formed in a homogeneous atmospheric layer and, possibly, that spicules are formed above the height of \(2''\). We discuss the spatio-temporal structure of the atmosphere near the limb from images of intensity as a function of position and time. In these images, we identify p-mode oscillations in the cores of lines formed at low heights above the photosphere, slow-moving bright features in O?i and fast-moving bright features in C?ii. Finally, we compare the Mg?ii k and h line profiles, together with intensity values of the Balmer lines from the literature, with computations from the PROM57Mg non-LTE model, developed at the Institut d’ Astrophysique Spatiale, and estimated values of the physical parameters. We obtain electron temperatures in the range of \({\sim}\, 8000~\mbox{K}\) at small heights to \({\sim}\, 20\,000~\mbox{K}\) at large heights, electron densities from \(1.1\times 10^{11}\) to \(4\times 10^{10}~\mbox{cm}^{-3}\) and a turbulent velocity of \({\sim}\, 24~\mbox{km}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\).  相似文献

The center-to-limb behaviour of the Ba ii 4554 resonance line is analyzed together with data from the extreme limb, flash intensities and profiles of other Ba ii lines. An empirical NLTE method is employed in which the observed profiles are compared with synthesized profiles based on a standard one-dimensional model atmosphere, with the line source function, the barium abundance, the collisional damping and the atmospheric turbulence as free parameters. The line profiles from the extreme limb furnish considerable constraints on the formation of Ba ii 4554. Its wings reverse into emission well inside the solar limb, a phenomenon which cannot be explained by any frequency-independent line source function. Accounting for effects of partially coherent scattering in the line source function is a necessary and adequate step to reproduce the observations both over the disk and near the limb. The form of the empirically derived frequency-dependent line source function is discussed. Results are given for various parameters (gf-values, solar barium abundance and isotope ratios, collisional damping, microturbulence and macroturbulence). The 4554 profile of disk center shows a depression in its blue wing resembling asymetries found in various stellar spectral lines.  相似文献

As part of a study of the cause of solar coronal heating, we searched for high-frequency (1 Hz) intensity oscillations in coronal loops in the [Fexiv] coronal green line. We summarize results from observations made at the 3 November 1994, total solar eclipse from the International Astronomical Union site in Putre, Chile, through partly cloudy skies, and at the 26 February 1998 total solar eclipse from Nord, Aruba, through clear skies. We discuss the image reduction and analysis of two simultaneous series of coronal CCD images digitized at 10 Hz for a total time of 160 s in Chile. One series of images was taken through a filter isolating the 5303 Å[Fexiv] coronal green line and the other through a 100 Å filter in the nearby K-corona continuum. We then discuss the modifications made for the 1998 eclipse, and the image reduction and analysis for those image sequences. After standard calibrations and image alignment of both data sets, we use Fourier analysis to search in the [Fexiv] channel for intensity oscillations in loops at the base of the corona. Such oscillations in the 1-Hz range are predicted as a result of density fluctuations from the resonant absorption of MHD waves. The dissipation of a significant amount of mechanical energy from the photosphere into the corona through this mechanism could provide sufficient energy to heat the corona. At neither eclipse do we find evidence for oscillations in the [Fexiv] green line at a level greater than 2% of coronal intensity.  相似文献

Some properties of the solar spicules as observed outside the limb through a Halle K-filter at the centre of the line are investigated. The observations have been made at the Pic-du-Midi Observatory. The results are as follows: (a) The chromosphere at the limb appears more diffuse in the K line than in the H line, the spicules being not well resolved. (b) The ratio of spicule intensity to the background intensity increases with height, as in the case of H spicules, but it is, in every height, smaller than that in H. (c) The spicule mean width is measured photometrically and found equal to 1900 km. (d) The lifetime is found to be 4.5 min. (e) The mean chromospheric height is estimated to be 6.000 km.  相似文献

Data from the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) provide the first opportunity to examine solar center-to-limb relative intensity measured exoatmospherically at wavelengths from 2.4 to 10 m. The data were obtained from limb-to-limb scans across the solar equator on days of very low activity in May 1994. Coefficients for a function describing limb darkening are obtained at eight infrared wavelengths using a nonlinear least-squares fitting technique. Relative intensities produced by the limb-darkening functions are precise to 0.1% (2). From the limb-darkening coefficients, it is possible to calculate temperature information about the photosphere. At each of the eight HALOE wavelengths, the brightness temperature from the flux, T b disk(), and the temperature as a function of monochromatic optical depth, T(), are determined and normalized using Kondratyev et al. (1965) and calibrated Pierce (1954) central intensity measurements. The two temperature quantities are compared with the predictions of Vernazza, Avrett, and Loeser's (1976) model M, and in general there is good agreement. The largest differences occur between 2.4 and 3 m and suggest that the central intensities used in this spectral region are low.  相似文献

A huge collection of solar images to visualize sunspot are acquired by various solar observatories spread across the globe. This necessitates efficient tools for detecting and analyzing the sunspots encompassing diverse solar features. One such contribution is delivered in this work by exploiting the intrinsic intensity variations of solar images associated with sunspots and their attributes. The presented mechanism initially, pre-processes the acquired solar images by correcting the intensity variations introduced while profiling from the sun center to the limb followed by smoothening using a localized window. The resultant is then differenced from the global threshold that is obtained as a result of the statistical analysis computed over the probability distribution function of the input image. This arrangement offers higher discerning variations concerned with the local contextual structures related to sunspot, umbra, and penumbra. Also, it captures the major gradient variation between these regions that adds to the pixel heterogeneity surrounding them to finally render an automatic sunspot detection mechanism distinguishing the diverse solar regions. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) investigation on annual solar images in Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format reveals the presented method’s efficacy. Also, Pearson correlation analysis of the evaluated sunspot numbers from the detected sunspots with the solar catalog reveals the scheme’s detection closeness. Moreover, the model’s simplicity analyzed along the time and space dimensions affirms its extension to real-time analysis  相似文献
