Comet 73P-B/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 was observed with IRCS/Subaru at geocentric distance of 0.074 AU on UT 10 May 2006. Multiple H2O emission lines were detected in non-resonant fluorescence near 2.9 μm. No significant variation in total H2O production rate was found during the (3 h) duration of our observations. H2O rotational temperatures and ortho-to-para abundance ratios were measured for several positions in the coma. The temperatures extracted from two different time intervals show very similar spatial distributions. For both, the rotational temperature decreased from ∼110 to ∼90 K as the projected distance from the nucleus increased from ∼5 to ∼30 km. We see no evidence for OPR change in the coma. The H2O ortho-para ratio is consistent with the statistical equilibrium value (3.0) for all spatially resolved measurements. This implies a nuclear spin temperature higher than ∼45 K.  相似文献

Spectroscopic observations of Comet Hale-Bopp were made at the 2.6 m Shajn Telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. Some spectra were obtained with high spectral resolution, FWHM = 0.18–0.4Å, in the coude focus on February 22 and 26, 1997. The observations were made in selected spectral windows (4805–4872 Å,6528–6595 Å, 7186–7253 Å, 8276–8408 Å).The spectrograph slit was centered on the nucleus and had dimensions of 25.2 × 0.6 arcsec2 on the plane of the sky. The continuum spatial profiles were extremely asymmetrical toward the Sun. However, the continuum-subtracted spatial profiles of the molecular emissions were symmetrical relative to the nucleus, except for C2. The shape of the spatial profiles of the C2 emissions is similar to that one of continuum but is more flattened. So, there are evidences that dust can be an additional source of the C2 radicals in the cometary coma. The main aim of our research was identification of the cometary emissions. Using recent laboratory spectroscopic data we identified newlines of C2 associated with the transitions from high rotational levels in the 4805–4872 Å spectral region. We detected cometary Hα emission as well. Emissions of NH2, H2O+,and C2 (Phillips system) were found in the red spectral windows. Some emission features are still unassigned.  相似文献

We present results and analysis of imaging polarimetric observations of Comet 2P/Encke. The observations were carried out at the 2-m RCC telescope of the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory on December 13, 1993 and on January 14, 1994, at phase angles 51.1° and 80.5°, respectively. A wide-band red filter 6940/790 Å was used. This filter is transparent for the continuum and the weak emission bands of NH2 and H2O+. There is a sunward dust fan with well-defined polarization, which peaks at≈13% in the image obtained on January 14, 1994. Along the sunward fan the degree of polarization decreases progressively. Outside of the fan the coma displays a low polarization of ≈3%. We suggest that this low polarization is caused by the NH2 emission in the pass-band of the red wide-band filter. Assuming a spherically symmetric NH2 coma we are able to correct the observed polarization for this effect. The correction leads to an increase of the observed polarization by 1 to 4% at distances 10,000 and 1500 km from the nucleus. A rough estimate shows that the polarization in the near nucleus region of Comet Encke is similar to that for the dusty comets. Even after correction the polarization of Comet Encke's dust fan is significantly less that the polarization observed in dusty comets. The reasons influencing the distribution of dust polarization in the coma are discussed. More polarimetric and colorimetric observations of the dust in Comet Encke on its return in 2003 are needed.  相似文献

The results of the multiaperture photometry of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 1991 T2 in the pre-perihelion and P/deVico in the post-perihelion period with the narrowband CN, C2 and Blue Continuum (BC) IHW filters are presented. A Haser model of the molecular coma was used for the determination of the parent and daughter scale-lengths and production rates of the radicals. The comets showed some substantial differences between their parent scale-lengths. The CN parent scale-length (at 1.0 AU) was 16×103 km for Comet Shoemaker-Levy and 39×103 for P/deVico, the C2 parent scale-lengths were respectively 29×103 and 54×103 km. Such divergences could be interpreted in the frame of different scenarios of emission of cometary parents, either from a nucleus or from a volume source. The daughter scale-lengths for these comets were quite similar, namely: 306×103 and 318×103 km for CN and 69×103 and 66×103 km for C2. We determined the Afρ parameter for apertures of different radii. A Monte Carlo model of the dust coma was used to obtain the dust ejection velocity. It was of the order of 0.1 km s−1 for both comets. The power index of the distribution of the β-parameter of dust particles (ratio of light pressure to the solar gravitation) was of the order of 3 for C/Shoemaker-Levy and close to 2 for P/deVico. The dependence on heliocentric distance (rh) of the radical and dust production rates for P/deVico in the range of 0.7-1.0 AU was described by the power law function with a power index equal to: 5.55±0.14 for CN, 5.70±0.24 for C2 and 5.22±0.19 for dust. Relative abundances of the dynamically new Comet Shoemaker-Levy and short-period P/deVico were quite similar with an enhancement of C2 comparing with standard values taken from A'Hearn et al. (1995).  相似文献

We investigated comets active at large heliocentric distances using observations obtained at the 6-m BTA telescope (SAO RAS, Russia). Long-slit and photometric modes of the focal reducer SCORPIO were used. Two of the comets, 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1) and C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) were observed to be emission rich. Detection of CO+ and N+2 emissions in the comae of these comets is evidence that they were formed in the outer regions of the Solar System or in a pre-solar interstellar cloud in a low temperature environment with T?25 K. The ratio of N+2/CO+ is equal to 0.011 and 0.027 for SW1 and LINEAR, respectively. Comet LINEAR is the most distant object in the Solar System (7.332 AU) for which CO+ and N+2 are measured. The photometric maximum of the isolated CO+ coma in Comet LINEAR is shifted by 1.4 arcsec (7.44×103 km) relative to the photometric maximum of the dust coma. This shift deviates from the sunward direction by 63 degrees.  相似文献

Spectra of the central core and surrounding coma of Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock (1983d) were obtained at 8–13 μm on 11 May and 2–4 μm on 12 May 1983. Spatially resolved measurements at 10 μm with a 4-arcsec beam showed that the central core was more than 100 times brighter than the inner coma only 8 arcsec away; for radially outflowing dust, the brightness ratio would be a factor of 8. The observations of the central core are consistent with direct detection of a nucleus having a radius of approximately 5 km. The temperature of the sunlit hemisphere was > 300 K. Spectra of the core are featureless, while spectra of the coma suggest weak silicate emission. The spectra show no evidence for icy grains. The dust producton rate on 11.4 May was ~ 105 g/sec, assuming that the gas flux from the dust-producing areas on the nucleus was ~ 10?5 g/cm2/sec.  相似文献

During the recent apparition of Comet Halley in 1985-86 a transient ionic event in the form of a blob of H2 O+ emission was recorded in thecoma at ~ 0h UT on 1986 March 13. Observations were carried out using a special IHW filter for H2 O+ emission at 7000 å/175 å, a 35 cm telescope, a Fabry-Perot interferometer and an image intensifier camera from Gurushikhar, Mt Abu. (24?39’N,72? 47’E). A Fabry-Perot inter-ferogram in Ha taken a few minutes later at the same location reveals strong hydrogen emission (Hα) associated with the blob. The velocity field in the blob is structured with relative velocities upto ~ 35km s?1. The event is interpreted as arising due to the sector boundary crossing of the interplanetary magnetic field by the comet  相似文献

Absolute spectrophotometry of the coma of Comet Kohoutek 1973f during post-perihelion period has been presented for seven nights in January 1984. Moderately wide range of heliocentric distance (0.436–0.799 AU) covered during observations allowed us to study the flux variation of emission bands with heliocentric distance. The emission features of CN, CH, C2, C3, and NaI have been identified in this comet. The abundances of CN and C2 have been estimated and the production rates of CN, C2 and C3 have been derived. Production rates of CN and C2 seem to vary as r –0.33 and r –3.50 respectively. The continuum of the comet became more and more redder as the heliocentric distance of the comet increased and phase angle decreased.  相似文献

We report on spectroscopic observations of periodic Comet 9P/Tempel 1 by the Alice ultraviolet spectrograph on the Rosetta spacecraft in conjunction with NASA's Deep Impact mission. Our objectives were to measure an increase in atomic and molecular emissions produced by the excavation of volatile sub-surface material. We unambiguously detected atomic oxygen emission from the quiescent coma but no enhancement at the 10% (1-σ) level following the impact. We derive a quiescent H2O production rate of 9×1027 molecules s−1 with an estimated uncertainty of ∼30%. Our upper limits to the volatiles produced by the impact are consistent with other estimates.  相似文献

The 4050 Å band of C3 was observed with Keck/HIRES echelle spectrometer during the Deep Impact encounter. We perform a 2-dimensional analysis of the exposures in order to study the spatial, spectral, and temporal changes in the emission spectrum of C3. The rotational population distribution changes after impact, beginning with an excitation temperature of ~45 K at impact and increasing for 2 hr up to a maximum of 61±5 K. From 2 to 4 hours after impact, the excitation temperature decreases to the pre-impact value. We measured the quiescent production rate of C3 before the encounter to be 1.0×1023 s?1, while 2 hours after impact we recorded a peak production rate of 1.7×1023 s?1. Whereas the excitation temperature returned to the pre-impact value during the observations, the production rate remained elevated, decreasing slowly, until the end of the 4 hr observations. These results are interpreted in terms of changing gas densities in the coma and short-term changes in the primary chemical production mechanism for C3.  相似文献

The concept of simultaneous multifrequency continuum observations, successfully tested on Comet Hyakutake, was applied to Comet Hale-Bopp, using the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (HHT) with the four color bolometer between 250 and 870 GHz, the IRAM 30m telescope at 240 Ghz, the MPIfR 100-m telescope at 32 GHz, and the IRAM interferometer near 90 and 240 GHz. Near-simultaneous measurements were done between February 15 and April 26, 1997, mainly concentrated in mid March shortly before perigee of the comet. The measurements gave the following preliminary results: Interferometer detection of the nuclear thermal emission. If the signal at the longest interferometer spacing of 170 mis due to thermal emission from the nucleus only, its equivalent diameter is ∼49 km. If, however, this signal contains a contribution from a strongly centrally peaked halo distribution(e.g., r−2 density variation) the diameter may be as low as 35 km. The emission found interferometrically was always 5″ north and 0.1 sec east from the position predicted by Yeoman's solution 55.The comparison of the interferometric continuum emission with the simultanously obtained molecular line observations (reported on this conference) shows the origin of the strongest line emission concentrated on the nucleus. The 30-m observations show a radio halo with a gaussian FWHP of ∼11, corresponding to a diameter of 11000 km at geocentric distance of 1.2 a.u. A spectral index of ∼3.0 for the total signal, which may indicate a smaller mean particle size than for Hyakutake. Assuming an average cometary density of 0.5 gcm−3, the mass contained in the nucleus is ∼1$#x2013;3 1019 g and 1012 g in the particle halo. Very-high spectral resolution observations of the neutral Na emission have enabled measurements of the velocity dispersions of the Na atoms within ∼40,000 km of the opto center of Hale-Bopp. Asymmetric Na D line profiles imply both an in situ or core Na source and a secondary Na source at locations within the inner coma. The core velocity distribution had a FWHM of 2 km s-1. The extended source FWHM increased with distance from the nucleus (up to ∼6 km s-1, but appeared smaller in the more dusty regions (∼2.5–3.0 km s-1) of the inner coma. The D2/D1 line strength ratio was consistent with an optically thin inner coma. Within 5,000 km of the opto center the continuum spatial intensity profiles decreased as ∼r-1 while the Na D emission decreased at less than r-1. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Intensity profiles were obtained for the C2 and CN emission and blue continuum of Comet Bradfield (1987s), from observations obtained over a 10 week period starting shortly before perihelion. Model intensity profiles were produced and then fitted to the observed profiles, and used to put constraints on some of the dust and gas parameters. Most of these parameters, including the gas and dust outflow speeds from the cometary nucleus and the molecular lifetimes, were consistent with expected values. The best fitting models incorporate significant dust particle fragmentation and extended emission of CN from dust, both occurring in the inner coma. In addition, although there may have been enhancement of gas and dust emission on the sunward side of the cometary nucleus, it appears that the tailward side maintained a significant level of activity.  相似文献

The recent discovery of CN and C2 gas jets in comet Halley has led to basic speculation as to their physical source mechanism. A basic quantitative study of the photosputtering of CHON grains and the spatial evolution of trace gas jets is presented here. Two possible single sources, a parent gas and CHON grains, for both the jet and the background gas, are also investigated. It is shown that a parent trace gas jet will remain focused out to distances as large as 105 km from the nucleus and could provide a source for the observed radical jets. Conversely, photosputtering of small CHON grains by solar UV radiation can provide the source not only for cometary CN and C2 but also possibly for inner coma C atoms and C+ ions. However, constraints on the size and/or morphology of the contributing grains themselves are found. Isotropic speed components comparable to the outflow speed are likely to be added to radicals upon production from either the CHON grain or the parent gas source and will yield a radical jet which becomes more diffuse with increasing distance from the nucleus. However, in neither case will the radical jet completely isotropicize; it will be confined generally to a quadrant as projected on the sky plane. Observational tests which can be made once the large set of in situ and remote observations have been analyzed are suggested to distinguish between the two scenarios.  相似文献

A very long series of photographic observations of the comet Hale-Bopp has been made during January–April 1997 at the double astrograph (400/2000) of the Main Astronomical Observatory (Kyiv, Ukraine). Some of the cometary photos were obtained with two wide-band filter combinations. One of these combinations isolates C2 emission, another — the nearby dust continuum. The images were digitized by means of AMDPH-XY machine and then calibrated following the standard procedure. After subtraction of the dust continuum the distribution of surface brightness in the C2 emission coma of comet Hale-Bopp was studied. We found an asymmetric brightness distribution both pre- and post-perihelion. On 21.77 April 1997 a secondary brightness peak is found at the distance of 1.03 × 105 km from the nucleus. It is possible that this peak is related to the extended source of the C2 molecules. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We analyze the superfine structure of the supermaser H2O emission region in Orion KL over the period 1979–1999. The angular resolution reached 0.1 mas, which corresponds to 0.045 AU at a distance to Orion KL of 450 pc. We determined the velocity of the local standard of rest, VLSR = 7.65 km s?1. The formation of a protostar is accompanied by a structure that consists of an accretion disk, a bipolar outflow, and a surrounding envelope. The disk is at the stage of separation into protoplanetary rings. The disk plane is warped like the brim of a hat. The disk is 27 AU in diameter and ~0.3 AU in thickness. The rings contain ice granules. Radiation and stellar wind sublimate and blow away the water molecules to form halos around the rings, maser rings. The radiation from the rings is concentrated in the azimuthal plane, and its directivity reaches 10?3. The relative velocities of the rings located in the central part of the disk 15 AU in diameter correspond to rigid-body rotation, Vrot = ΩR. The rotation period is T ≈ 170 yr. The injector is surrounded by a toroidal structure 1.2 AU in diameter. The diameter of the injected flow does not exceed 0.05 AU. A highly collimated bipolar outflow with a diameter of ~0.1 AU is observed at a distance as large as 3 AU. Precession of the injector axis with a period of ~10 yr forms a spiral flow structure. The flow velocity is ~10 km s?1. The kinetic energy of the accreting matter and the disk is assumed to be transferred to the bipolar outflow, causing the rotation velocity distribution of the rings to deviate from the Keplerian velocity. The surrounding envelope amplifies the emission from the structure at a velocity of 7.65 km s?1 in a band of ~0.5 km s?1 by more than two orders of magnitude, which determines the supermaser emission.  相似文献

The apparition of Comet C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) offered an unexpected and rare opportunity to probe the inner atmosphere of a comet with high spatial resolution and to investigate with unprecedented sensitivity its chemical composition. We present observations of over 30 submillimeter transitions of HCN, H13CN, HNC, HNCO, CO, CH3OH, and H2CO in Comet Hyakutake carried out between 1996 March 18 and April 9 at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Detections of the H13CN (4–3) and HNCO (160,16–150,15) transitions represent the first observations of these species in a comet. In addition, several other transitions, including HCN (8–7), CO (4–3), and CO (6–5) are detected for the first time in a comet as is the hyperfine structure of the HCN (4–3) line. The observed intensities of the HCN (4–3) hyperfine components indicate a line center optical depth of 0.9 ± 0.2 on March 22.5 UT. The HCN/HNC abundance ratio in Comet Hyakutake at a heliocentric distance of 1 AU is similar to that measured in the Orion extended ridge— a warm, quiescent molecular cloud. The HCN/H13CN abundance ratio implied by our observations is 34 ± 12, similar to that measured in giant molecular clouds in the galactic disk but significantly lower than the Solar System12C/13C ratio. The low HCN/H13CN abundance ratio may be in part due to contamination by an SO2line blended with the H13CN (4–3) line. In addition, chemical models suggest that the HCN/H13CN ratio can be affected by fractionation during the collapse phase of the protosolar nebula; hence a low HCN/H13CN ratio observed in a comet is not inconsistent with the solar system12C/13C isotopic ratio. The abundance of HNCO relative to water derived from our observations is (7 ± 3) × 10−4. The HCN/HNCO abundance ratio is similar to that measured in the core of Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud. Although a photo-dissociative channel of HNCO leads to CO, the CO produced by HNCO is a negligible component of cometary atmospheres. Production rates of HCN, CO, H2CO, and CH3OH are presented. Inferred molecular abundances relative to water are typical of those measured in comets at 1 AU from the Sun. The exception is CO, for which we derive a large relative abundance of 30%. The evolution of the HCN production rate between March 20 and March 30 suggests that the increased activity of the comet was the cause of the fragmentation of the nucleus. The time evolution of the H2CO emission suggests production of this species from dust grains.  相似文献

Based on long-slit infrared spectroscopic observations, it has been suggested that half of the carbon monoxide present in the atmosphere of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) close to perihelion was released by a distributed source in the coma, whose nature (dust or gas) remains unidentified. We re-assess the origin of CO in Hale-Bopp’s coma from millimeter interferometric data and a re-analysis of the IR lines.Simultaneous observations of the CO J(1–0) (115 GHz) and J(2–1) (230 GHz) lines were undertaken with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer in single-dish and interferometric modes. The diversity of angular resolutions (from 1700 to 42,000 km diameter at the comet) is suitable to study the radial distribution of CO and detect the extended source observed in the infrared. We used excitation and radiative transfer models to simulate the single-dish and interferometric data. Various CO density distributions were considered, including 3D time-dependent hydrodynamical simulations which reproduce temporal variations caused by the presence of a CO rotating jet. The CO J(1–0) and J(2–1) observations can be consistently explained by a nuclear production of CO. Composite 50:50 nuclear/extended productions with characteristic scale lengths of CO parent Lp > 1500 km are rejected.Based on similar radiation transfer calculations, we show that the CO v = 1–0 ro-vibrational lines observed in Comet Hale-Bopp at heliocentric distances less than 1.5 AU are severely optically thick. The broad extent of the CO brightness distribution in the infrared is mainly due to optical depth effects entering in the emitted radiation. Additional factors can be found in the complex structure of the CO coma, and non-ideal slit positioning caused by the anisotropy of dust IR emission. We conclude that both CO millimeter and infrared lines do not provide compelling evidence for a distributed source of CO in Hale-Bopp’s atmosphere.  相似文献

The rates and altitudes for the dissociation of atmospheric constituents of Titan are calculated for solar UV, solar wind protons, interplanetary electrons, Saturn magnetospheric particles, and cosmic rays. The resulting integrated synthesis rates of organic products range from 102–103 g cm?2 over 4.5 × 109 years for high-energy particle sources to 1.3 × 104 g cm?2 for UV at λ < 1550 A?, and to 5.0 × 105 g cm?2 if λ > 1550 A? (acting primarily on C2H2, C2H4, and C4H2) is included. The production rate curves show no localized maxima corresponding to observed altitudes of Titan's hazes and clouds. For simple to moderately complex organic gases in the Titanian atmosphere, condensation occurs below the top of the main cloud deck at 2825 km. Such condensates comprise the principal cloud mass, with molecules of greater complexity condensing at higher altitudes. The scattering optical depths of the condensates of molecules produced in the Titanian mesosphere are as great as ~ 102/(particulate radius, μm) if column densities of condensed and gas phases are comparable. Visible condensation hazes of more complex organic compounds may occur at altitudes up to ~ 3060 km provided only that the abundance of organic products declines with molecular mass no faster than laboratory experiments indicate. Typical organics condensing at 2900 km have molecular masses = 100–150 Da. At current rates of production the integrated depth of precipitated organic liquids, ices, and tholins produced over 4.5 × 109 years ranges from a minimum ~ 100 m to kilometers if UV at λ > 1550 A? is important. The organic nitrogen content of this layer is expected to be ~ 10?1?10?3 by mass.  相似文献
