The extrasolar planets discovered to date possess unexpected orbital elements. Most orbit their host stars with larger eccentricities and smaller semi-major axes than similarly sized planets in our own Solar System do. It is generally agreed that the interaction between giant planets and circumstellar disks (Type II migration) drives these planets inward to small radii, but the effect of these same disks on orbital eccentricity, ?, is controversial. Several recent analytic calculations suggest that disk-planet interactions can excite eccentricity, while numerical studies generally produce eccentricity damping. This paper addresses this controversy using a quasi-analytic approach, drawing on several preceding analytic studies. This work refines the current treatment of eccentricity evolution by removing several approximations from the calculation of disk torques. We encounter neither uniform damping nor uniform excitation of orbital eccentricity, but rather a function d?/dt that varies in both sign and magnitude depending on eccentricity and other Solar System properties. Most significantly, we find that for every combination of disk and planet properties investigated herein, corotation torques produce negative values of d?/dt for some range in ? within the interval [0.1, 0.5]. If corotation torques are saturated, this region of eccentricity damping disappears, and excitation occurs on a short timescale of less than 0.08 Myr. Thus, our study does not produce eccentricity excitation on a timescale of a few Myr—we obtain either eccentricity excitation on a short time scale, or eccentricity damping on a longer time scale. Finally, we discuss the implications of this result for producing the observed range in extrasolar planet eccentricity.

The TrES‐2 system harbors one planet which was discovered with the transit technique. In this work we investigate the dynamical behavior of possible additional, lower‐mass planets. We identify the regions where such planets can move on stable orbits and show how they depend on the initial eccentricity and inclination. We find, that there are stable regions inside and outside the orbit of TrES‐2b where additional, smaller planets can move. We also show that those planets can have a large orbital inclination which makes a detection with the transit technique very difficult (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

We have performed N-body simulation on final accretion stage of terrestrial planets, including the effect of damping of eccentricity and inclination caused by tidal interaction with a remnant gas disk. As a result of runway and oligarchic accretion, about 20 Mars-sized protoplanets would be formed in nearly circular orbits with orbital separation of several to ten Hill radius. The orbits of the protoplanets would be eventually destabilized by long-term mutual gravity and/or secular resonance of giant gaseous planets. The protoplanets would coalesce with each other to form terrestrial planets through the orbital crossing. Previous N-body simulations, however, showed that the final eccentricities of planets are around 0.1, which are about 10 times higher than the present eccentricities of Earth and Venus. The obtained high eccentricities are the remnant of orbital crossing. We included the effect of eccentricity damping caused by gravitational interaction with disk gas as a drag force (“gravitational drag”) and carried out N-body simulation of accretion of protoplanets. We start with 15 protoplanets with 0.2M⊕ and integrate the orbits for 107 years, which is consistent with the observationally inferred disk lifetime (in some runs, we start with 30 protoplanets with 0.1M⊕). In most runs, the damping time scale, which is equivalent to the strength of the drag force, is kept constant throughout each run in order to clarify the effects of the damping. We found that the planets' final mass, spatial distribution, and eccentricities depend on the damping time scale. If the damping time scale for a 0.2M⊕ mass planet at 1 AU is longer than 108 years, planets grow to Earth's size, but the final eccentricities are too high as in gas-free cases. If it is shorter than 106 years, the eccentricities of the protoplanets cannot be pumped up, resulting in not enough orbital crossing to make Earth-sized planets. Small planets with low eccentricities are formed with small orbital separation. On the other hand, if it is between 106 and 108 years, which may correspond to a mostly depleted disk (0.01-0.1% of surface density of the minimum mass model), some protoplanets can grow to about the size of Earth and Venus, and the eccentricities of such surviving planets can be diminished within the disk lifetime. Furthermore, in innermost and outermost regions in the same system, we often find planets with smaller size and larger eccentricities too, which could be analogous to Mars and Mercury. This is partly because the gravitational drag is less effective for smaller mass planets, and partly due to the “edge effect,” which means the innermost and outermost planets tend to remain without collision. We also carried out several runs with time-dependent drag force according to depletion of a gas disk. In these runs, we used exponential decay model with e-folding time of 3×106 years. The orbits of protoplanets are stablized by the eccentricity damping in the early time. When disk surface density decays to ?1% of the minimum mass disk model, the damping force is no longer strong enough to inhibit the increase of the eccentricity by distant perturbations among protoplanets so that the orbital crossing starts. In this disk decay model, a gas disk with 10−4-10−3 times the minimum mass model still remains after the orbital crossing and accretional events, which is enough to damp the eccentricities of the Earth-sized planets to the order of 0.01. Using these results, we discuss a possible scenario for the last stage of terrestrial planet formation.

The most puzzling property of the extrasolar planets discovered by recent radial velocity surveys is their high orbital eccentricities, which are very difficult to explain within our current theoretical paradigm for planet formation. Current data reveal that at least 25% of these planets, including some with particularly high eccentricities, are orbiting a component of a binary star system. The presence of a distant companion can cause significant secular perturbations in the orbit of a planet. At high relative inclinations, large-amplitude, periodic eccentricity perturbations can occur. These are known as “Kozai cycles” and their amplitude is purely dependent on the relative orbital inclination. Assuming that every planet host star also has a (possibly unseen, e.g., substellar) distant companion, with reasonable distributions of orbital parameters and masses, we determine the resulting eccentricity distribution of planets and compare it to observations? We find that perturbations from a binary companion always appear to produce an excess of planets with both very high (?0.6) and very low (e ? 0.1) eccentricities. The paucity of near-circular orbits in the observed sample implies that at least one additional mechanism must be increasing eccentricities. On the other hand, the overproduction of very high eccentricities observed in our models could be combined with plausible circularization mechanisms (e.g., friction from residual gas) to create more planets with intermediate eccentricities (e? 0.1–0.6).

The significant orbital eccentricities of most giant extrasolar planets may have their origin in the gravitational dynamics of initially unstable multiple planet systems. In this work, we explore the dynamics of two close planets on inclined orbits through both analytical techniques and extensive numerical scattering experiments. We derive a criterion for two equal mass planets on circular inclined orbits to achieve Hill stability, and conclude that significant radial migration and eccentricity pumping of both planets occurs predominantly by 2:1 and 5:3 mean motion resonant interactions. Using Laplace-Lagrange secular theory, we obtain analytical secular solutions for the orbital inclinations and longitudes of ascending nodes, and use those solutions to distinguish between the secular and resonant dynamics which arise in numerical simulations. We also illustrate how encounter maps, typically used to trace the motion of massless particles, may be modified to reproduce the gross instability seen by the numerical integrations. Such a correlation suggests promising future use of such maps to model the dynamics of more coplanar massive planet systems.

This paper presents a parametric study of giant planet migration through the combined action of disk torques and planet-planet scattering. The torques exerted on planets during Type II migration in circumstellar disks readily decrease the semi-major axes a, whereas scattering between planets increases the orbital eccentricities ?. This paper presents a parametric exploration of the possible parameter space for this migration scenario using two (initial) planetary mass distributions and a range of values for the time scale of eccentricity damping (due to the disk). For each class of systems, many realizations of the simulations are performed in order to determine the distributions of the resulting orbital elements of the surviving planets; this paper presents the results of ∼8500 numerical experiments. Our goal is to study the physics of this particular migration mechanism and to test it against observations of extrasolar planets. The action of disk torques and planet-planet scattering results in a distribution of final orbital elements that fills the a-? plane, in rough agreement with the orbital elements of observed extrasolar planets. In addition to specifying the orbital elements, we characterize this migration mechanism by finding the percentages of ejected and accreted planets, the number of collisions, the dependence of outcomes on planetary masses, the time spent in 2:1 and 3:1 resonances, and the effects of the planetary IMF. We also determine the distribution of inclination angles of surviving planets and the distribution of ejection speeds for exiled planets.

We report Doppler measurements of the stars HD 187085 and HD 20782 which indicate two high eccentricity low-mass companions to the stars. We find HD 187085 has a Jupiter-mass companion with a ∼1000-d orbit. Our formal 'best-fitting' solution suggests an eccentricity of 0.47, however, it does not sample the periastron passage of the companion and we find that orbital solutions with eccentricities between 0.1 and 0.8 give only slightly poorer fits (based on rms and  χ2ν  ) and are thus plausible. Observations made during periastron passage in 2007 June should allow for the reliable determination of the orbital eccentricity for the companion to HD 187085. Our data set for HD 20782 does sample periastron and so the orbit for its companion can be more reliably determined. We find the companion to HD 20782 has   M sin   i = 1.77 ± 0.22  M Jup  , an orbital period of 595.86 ± 0.03 d and an orbit with an eccentricity of 0.92 ± 0.03. The detection of such high-eccentricity (and relatively low-velocity amplitude) exoplanets appears to be facilitated by the long-term precision of the Anglo-Australian Planet Search. Looking at exoplanet detections as a whole, we find that those with higher eccentricity seem to have relatively higher velocity amplitudes indicating higher mass planets and/or an observational bias against the detection of high-eccentricity systems.

Observations and results of orbit determination of the first known Mars Trojan asteroid (5261) Eureka are presented. We have numerically calculated the evolution of the orbital elements, and have analyzed the behavior of the motion during the next 2 Myr. Strong perturbations by planets other than Mars seem to stabilize the eccentricity of the asteroid by stirring the high order resonances present in the elliptic restricted problem. As a result, the orbit appears stable at least on megayear timescales. The difference of the mean longitudes of Mars and Eureka and the semimajor axis of the asteroid form a pair of variables that essentially behave in an adiabatic manner, while the evolution of the other orbital elements is largely determined by the perturbations due to other planets.

We use both the conventional and more recently developed methods of cluster analysis to study the data of extrasolar planets (exoplanets). Using the data set with planetary mass M , orbital period P and orbital eccentricity e , we investigate the possible clustering in the  ln  M ,  ln  P ,  ln  P –ln  M ,   e   and ln   P – e spaces. There are two main implications: (1) mass distribution is continuous, and (2) orbital population could be classified into three clusters, which correspond to the exoplanets in the regimes of tidal, ongoing tidal and disc interaction, respectively.

A summary is given about the minor planet survey performed in 1988 on Tautenburg Schmidt plates. There were discovered 386 asteroids and 1218 positions were calculated for them. These are 87 numbered objects and 299 asteroids with provisional designations, 252 of them have new designations. Tautenburg observations contributed to 40 planets numbered in the period of this report, including eight discovered in Tautenburg.

We investigate the dynamics of putative Earth-mass planets in the habitable zone (HZ) of the extrasolar planetary system OGLE-2006-BLG-109L, a close analogue of the Solar system. Our work is inspired by the work of Malhotra & Minton. Using the linear Laplace–Lagrange theory, they identified a strong secular resonance that may excite large eccentricity of orbits in the HZ. However, due to uncertain or unconstrained orbital parameters, the subsystem of Jupiters may be found in a dynamically active region of the phase space spanned by low-order mean-motion resonances. To generalize this secular model, we construct a semi-analytical averaging method in terms of the restricted problem. The secular orbits of large planets are approximated by numerically averaged osculating elements. They are used to calculate the mean orbits of terrestrial planets by means of a high-order analytic secular theory developed in our previous works. We found regions in the parameter space of the problem in which stable, quasi-circular orbits in the HZ are permitted. The excitation of eccentricity in the HZ strongly depends on the apsidal angle of jovian orbits. For some combinations of that angle, eccentricities and semimajor axes consistent with the observations, a terrestrial planet may survive in low eccentric orbits. We also study the effect of post-Newtonian gravity correction on the innermost secular resonance.

Today there are more than 340 extra-solar planets in about 270 extra-solar systems confirmed. Besides the observed planets there exists also the possibility of a Trojan planet moving in the same orbit as the Jupiter-like planet. In our investigation we take also into account the habitability of a Trojan planet and whether such a terrestrial planet stays in the habitable zone. Its stability was investigated for multi-planetary systems, where one of the detected giant planets moves partly or completely in the habitable zone. By using numerical computations, we studied the orbital behaviour up to 107 years and determined the size of the stable regions around the Lagrangian equilibrium points for different dynamical models for fictitious Trojans. We also examined the interaction of the Trojan planets with a second or third giant planet, by varying its semimajor axis and eccentricity. We have found two systems (HD 155358 and HD 69830) that can host habitable Trojan planets. Another aim of this work was to determine the size of the stable region around the Lagrangian equilibrium points in the restricted three body problem for small mass ratios μ of the primaries μ ≤ 0.001 (e.g. Neptune mass of the secondary and smaller masses). We established a simple relation for the size depending on μ and the eccentricity.

We use numerical simulations to model the migration of massive planets at small radii and compare the results with the known properties of 'hot Jupiters' (extrasolar planets with semimajor axes   a < 0.1  au). For planet masses   M pl sin  i > 0.5 M J  , the evidence for any 'pile-up' at small radii is weak (statistically insignificant), and although the mass function of hot Jupiters is deficient in high-mass planets as compared to a reference sample located further out, the small sample size precludes definitive conclusions. We suggest that these properties are consistent with disc migration followed by entry into a magnetospheric cavity close to the star. Entry into the cavity results in a slowing of migration, accompanied by a growth in orbital eccentricity. For planet masses in excess of 1 Jupiter mass we find eccentricity growth time-scales of a few ×105 yr, suggesting that these planets may often be rapidly destroyed. Eccentricity growth appears to be faster for more massive planets which may explain changes in the planetary mass function at small radii and may also predict a pile-up of lower mass planets, the sample of which is still incomplete.

A catalog of asteroids in two-body orbital resonances with the planets of the Solar System has been created. The AstDyS database was a source of the input data, and all the numbered objects (467303 objects at the time of the analysis) were considered. The orbits were integrated in the framework of a pure gravitational problem considering all the planets of the Solar System and Pluto. From the analysis of the behavior of the resonant argument and the semimajor axis on the 100-kyr interval, the resonance membership and the libration type (pure or transient) were verified for each of the asteroids. A more accurate method to identify the resonant argument librations was developed on the basis of the analysis of mutual periodograms. We found 23251 resonant asteroids, ~36% of which (8397 objects) are in pure resonances.

Leverrier's development of the indirect part of the disturbing function has been extended to include terms up to degree 4 in eccentricity and inclination; the resulting series has been expressed with respect to a fixed plane, and in a computer readable form (a list of integers). Tests have been performed for the relative significance of the terms of degrees 2, 3 and 4, and estimates have been obtained for the accuracy of the short periodic perturbations of a minor planet, and of the corresponding mean orbital elements. It was found that: (i) even in extreme cases, the indirect part of the disturbing function gives rise to very small short periodic perturbations; (ii) bodies of very high eccentricity/inclination and those close to mean motion resonances are most significantly affected; (iii) indirect perturbations for minor planets can be computed up to the degree 2 terms only, without any significant loss of accuracy; and (iv) higher degree indirect perturbations appear to be important only for their contribution to the long periodic effects of higher order (with respect to the perturbing mass).
