Extraterrestrial chrome spinel and chromite extracted from the sedimentary rock record are relicts from coarse micrometeorites and rarely meteorites. They are studied to reconstruct the paleoflux of meteorites to the Earth and the collisional history of the asteroid belt. Minor element concentrations of Ti and V, and oxygen isotopic compositions of these relict minerals were used to classify the meteorite type they stem from, and thus to determine the relative meteorite group abundances through time. While coarse sediment-dispersed extraterrestrial chrome-spinel (SEC) grains from ordinary chondrites dominate through the studied time windows in the Phanerozoic, there are exceptions: We have shown that ~467 Ma ago, 1 Ma before the breakup of the L chondrite parent body (LCPB), more than half of the largest (>63 μm diameter) grains were achondritic and originated from differentiated asteroids in contrast to ordinary chondrites which dominated the meteorite flux throughout most of the past 500 Ma. Here, we present a new data set of oxygen isotopic compositions and elemental compositions of 136 grains of a smaller size fraction (32–63 μm) in ~467 Ma old pre-LCPB limestone from the Lynna River section in western Russia, that was previously studied by elemental analysis. Our study constitutes the most comprehensive oxygen isotopic data set of sediment-dispersed extraterrestrial chrome spinel to date. We also introduce a Raman spectroscopy-based method to identify SEC grains and distinguish them from terrestrial chrome spinel with ~97% reliability. We calibrated the Raman method with the established approach using titanium and vanadium concentrations and oxygen isotopic compositions. We find that ordinary chondrites are approximately three times more abundant in the 32–63 μm fraction than achondrites. While abundances of achondrites compared to ordinary chondrites are lower in the 32–63 μm size fraction than in the >63 μm one, achondrites are approximately three times more abundant in the 32–62 μm fraction than they are in the present flux. We find that the sources of SEC grains vary for different grain sizes, mainly as a result of parent body thermal metamorphism. We conclude that the meteorite flux composition ~467 Ma ago ~1 Ma before the breakup of the LCPB was fundamentally different from today and from other time windows studied in the Phanerozoic, but that in contrast to the large size fraction ordinary chondrites dominated the flux in the small size fraction. The high abundance of ordinary chondrites in the studied samples is consistent with the findings based on coarse extraterrestrial chrome-spinel from other time windows.  相似文献

A summary of total sulfur abundances representative of the Apollo Missions is presented. Lunar crystalline rocks range from 0 to 3100μg S g−1. Lunar soils range from 310 to 1300μg S g−1. Rock mixing models evaluate the distribution of sulfur and define indigenous rock components and extralunar contributions of sulfur in lunar soils. Extralunar sulfur shows a positive correlation with a CC-1 like meteoritic component and solar wind derived total carbon content in the Apollo 16 and 17 lunar soils. Lithium contents have been determined by neutron activation analysis in 54 meteorites distributed as: C (9), H (13), L (10), LL (3), E (2), achondrites (11), and stony irons (6). Among the undifferentiated meteorites Li contents range from 1 to 3 ppm. Li contents are higher in Ca-rich achondrites and mesosiderites than in Ca-poor achondrites and pallasites respectively. Among achondrites, Li correlates positively with Ca and Al and inversely with Mg. A minor Li-rich phase might be associated with the plagioclase component of achondrites. In several meteorites Li concentration is determined in magnetic and nonmagnetic fractions, chondrules, and light and dark components (for the gas-rich meteorites).  相似文献

Abundances of Na, Al, Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Cu have been measured by instrumental neutron activation analyses of 103 chondrites and 17 achondrites. In many cases, analyses were made of replicate samples from the same meteorite. Various sources of error in the method, including sampling errors, are discussed in detail. Examination of the patterns of coherence of the elements we have determined suggests that we can perceive effects of fractionation during condensation from the solar nebula of matter parental to chondrites. Such effects seem to be exhibited both in the abundances of lithophilic elements, perhaps being related to varied temperatures of accretion and in the abundances of those elements which would be affected by metal-silicate fractionation in the solar nebula. Atomic abundances relative to Si vary little in carbonaceous chondrites, suggesting that efficient mixing processes operated on these meteorites prior to or during their formation. We suggest that at present, no single class of carbonaceous chondrites is clearly more primitive than another. Carbonaceous and unequilibrated ordinary chondrites may represent aggregates of material accreted from the solar nebula at relatively low temperatures, as many recent discussions of these meteorites would suggest. Our data support a model of equilibration and minor mobilization of non-volatile elements within small domains of chondrites after accretion. Such a model would be consistent with the petrologic types of Van Schmus and Wood (1967). Achondrites do not exhibit simple regularities in lithophilic elemental abundances as do chondrites. Models for the origins of achondrites surely must include effects of magmatic fractionation, but we do not at present have enough information to assess the plausibility of such models.  相似文献

As part of a large‐scale survey of meteorite bulk and grain densities, porosities, and magnetic susceptibilities, we measured these properties for 174 stones from 106 achondritic meteorites. These include four lunar meteorites, 15 stones from 10 shergottites, nakhlites, and chassignites (SNCs), 96 stones from 56 howardites, eucrites, and diogenites (HEDs), 17 stones from nine aubrites, two angrites, and 16 stones from 10 ureilites, four stones of three acapulcoites, as well as four stones of three lodranites, and 15 stones from eight primitive achondrites. Those meteorites derived from basalts and crustal material of differentiated parent bodies have lower densities and magnetic susceptibilities, on an average, than the more primitive achondrites, which have a higher percentage metal. A notable exception is the one chassignite in the study (Chassigny), which has a high grain density of 3.73 ± 0.04 g cm?3. Ureilites have magnetic susceptibilities consistent with primitive achondrites, but lower grain densities. Porosities do not vary considerably between most of the groups, with most stones 5–14% porous, although on an average, ureilites and brachinites have lower porosities, with most stones less than 7% porous. For primitive achondrites, the higher metal content causes finds to exhibit weathering effects similar to what is observed in ordinary chondrites, with a reduction in grain density, magnetic susceptibility, and porosity as compared with unweathered falls. For lunites, SNCs, and HEDs, no such effect is observed. We also observe that grain density and magnetic susceptibility used in conjunction distinguish shergottites, nakhlites, and chassignites from each other. Shergottites and nakhlites have low grain densities (averaging 3.31 and 3.41 g cm?3, respectively) whereas Chassigny is 3.7 g cm?3. In magnetic susceptibility, shergottities and chassignites are similar (averaging 2.85 and 2.98 in log units of 10?9 m3 kg?1, respectively) with nakhlites averaging higher at 3.42.  相似文献

Abstract— The abundances of alkali elements in the Earth's core are predicted by assuming that accretion of the Earth started from material similar in composition to enstatite chondrites and that enstatite achondrites (aubrites) provide a natural laboratory to study core-mantle differentiation under extremely reducing conditions. If core formation on the aubrite parent body is comparable with core formation on the early Earth, it is found that 2600 (±1000) ppm Na, 550 (±260) ppm K, 3.4 (±2.1) ppm Rb, and 0.31 (±0.24) ppm Cs can reside in the Earth's core. The alkali-element abundances are consistent with those predicted by independent estimates based on nebula condensation calculations and heat flow data.  相似文献

The spectral uniqueness of asteroid 4 Vesta has led to suggestions that it is the eucrite parent body. However, there exist other basaltic achondrite types besides eucrites; either they also came from Vesta or else there exist other achondrite parent bodies. Howardites appear to be mixtures of eucrites and diogenites, and mesosiderites mixtures of eucrites or howardites and iron; thus one may infer that all four classes come from the same parent body. The REE patterns of eucrites and diogenites are modeled in order to test this hypothesis; eucrites can be made easily, but the patterns of diogenites are more difficult to match. The other basaltic achondrites are so rare that one cannot argue from statistics of abundances against a disrupted parent body for their origin. Pallasites and most irons likely had an origin separate from eucrites, again in parent bodies since disrupted.  相似文献

Substantial indigenous abundances of siderophile elements have been found to be present in the lunar highlands. The abundances of 13 siderophile elements in the parental magma of the highlands crust were estimated by using a simple model whereby the Apollo 16 highlands were regarded as being a mixture of three components (i.e. cumulus plagioclase + intercumulus magma that was parentel to the highlands crust + meteoritic contamination by ordinary chondrites). The parental magma of the highlands was found to possess abundances of siderophile elements that were generally similar to the abundances of the unequivocally indigenous siderophile elements in primitive, low-Ti mare basalts. This striking similarity implies that these estimated abundances in the parental highlands magma are truly indigenous, and also supports the basic validity of our simple model. It is shown that metal/silicate fractionation within the Moon cannot have been the cause of the siderophile element abundances in the parental highlands magma and primitive, low-Ti mare basalts. The relative abundances of the indigenous siderophile elements in highland and mare samples seem, instead, to be the result of complex processes which operatedprior to the Moon's accretion. The abundances of the relatively involatile, siderophile elements in the parental highlands magma are strikingly similar to the abundances observed in terrestrial oceanic tholeiites. Furthermore, the abundances of the relatively volatile, siderophile elements in the parental highlands magma are also systematically related to the corresponding abundances in terrestrial oceanic tholeiites. In fact, the parental magma of the lunar highlands can be essentially regarded as having been a volatile-depleted, terrestrial oceanic tholeiite. The complex, siderophile element fractionations in the Earth's upper mantle are thought to be the result of core segregation. However, it is well-known that the siderophile element abundances do not correspond to expectations based solely upon equilibration of metal/silicate at low-pressures, as evidenced by the over-abundances of Au, Re, Ni, Co and Cu. Ringwood (1977a) has suggested that the siderophile element abundances in the Earth's upper mantle are the product of equilibration at very high-pressures between the mantle and a segregating core that contained substantial quantities of an element with a low atomic weight, such as oxygen. Comparable processes cannot have operated within the Moon due to its small internal pressures and the very small size of its possible core. Therefore, the fact that the Moon exhibits a systematic resemblance to the Earth's upper mantle is highly significant. The origin of the Moon is discussed in the context of these results. The possibility that depletion of siderophile elements occurred in an earlier generation of differentiated planetesimals similar to those which formed the basaltic achondrites, stony-irons, and irons is examined but can be dismissed on several grounds. It seems that the uniquely terrestrial siderophile signature within the Moon can be explained only if the Moon was derived from the Earth's mantle subsequent to core-formation.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May, 1978.  相似文献

The Northwest Africa (NWA) 090 meteorite, initially classified as an acapulcoite, presents petrological, chemical, and isotopic characteristics comparable to a group of seven primitive winonaites: Dhofar 1222, NWA 725, NWA 1052, NWA 1054, NWA 1058, NWA 1463, and NWA 8614. Five of these samples were previously classified as acapulcoites or ungrouped achondrites before being reclassified as winonaites based on their oxygen isotopic compositions. These misclassifications are indicative of the particular compositional nature of these primitive achondrites. All contain relict chondrules and a lower closure temperature of metamorphism of 820 ± 20 °C compared to other typical winonaites, as well as mineral elemental compositions similar to those of acapulcoites. The oxygen isotopic signature of these samples, δ17O of 1.18 ± 0.17‰, δ18O of 3.18 ± 0.30‰, and Δ17O of −0.47 ± 0.02, is in fact resolvable from both acapulcoites and winonaites. We investigate the relationship between these eight primitive achondrites, typical winonaites, and acapulcoites, to redefine petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical criteria of primitive achondrite classification. Distinguishing between winonaites, acapulcoites, and this group of eight primitive achondrites can be unambiguously done using a combination of several mineralogical and chemical criteria. A combination of olivine fayalite content and FeO/MnO ratio, as well as plagioclase potassium content allow us to separate these three groups without the absolute necessity of oxygen isotope analyses. NWA 090 as well as the other seven primitive achondrites, although related to winonaites, are most likely derived from a parent body distinct from winonaites and acapulcoites–lodranites, and define a new group of primitive achondrites that can be referred to as tissemouminites.  相似文献

Zirconium and hafnium in meteorites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract– The ratio of the two refractory trace elements zirconium (Zr) and hafnium (Hf) in meteorites has been proposed to be uniform. The most precise value available is 34.3 ± 0.2 (1σ). It was obtained by isotope dilution ICP‐MS applied to 15 chondrites, most of which were carbonaceous chondrites, and six achondrites. We reinvestigated the case and determined Zr/Hf ratios of a broad spectrum of meteoritic samples via laser ablation ICP‐MS. Our sample suite comprised 29 chondrites and five achondrites. The main objective of the study was two‐fold: we intended to verify the accuracy and precision of a relatively fast and inexpensive sample preparation method combined with expeditious laser ablation ICP‐MS techniques. Furthermore, we were looking into the possibility of systematic fine‐scale Zr/Hf variations among bulk meteoritic matter of different classes. The applied fusion technique together with laser ablation ICP‐MS turned out to be well suited to determine relative refractory trace element abundances. Absolute Zr/Hf ratios yield uncertainties of approximately 4% (1σ). As opposed to the most recent findings, we observed variable Zr/Hf ratios in different meteorites ranging from approximately 28 to approximately 38. Our value for Orgueil (CI1) is 34.0 ± 0.3 (1σ). Including literature data, we propose a solar system value of 34.1 ± 0.3. Our data also suggest that H chondrites tend to exhibit higher Zr/Hf ratios (average of 35.6 ± 0.5 [1σ]) while EL6 chondrites rather show low values (average of 30.8 ± 0.6 [1σ]). In addition to examining Zr/Hf ratios, we also explored the content of refractory major elements in different meteorite groups. Here, we found that EL6 chondrites often show very low Ca/Al ratios. The CI1 value for CaO/Al2O3 is 0.804. EL6 chondrites, however, display ratios as low as approximately 0.3. While the variation in Zr/Hf can be explained by fractional condensation processes in the early solar nebula, the observed low Ca/Al ratios in EL6 chondrites are probably attributable to deficits in oldhamite (CaS).  相似文献

Mid-infrared (5–25 μm) transmission/absorption spectra of differentiated meteorites (achondrites) were measured to permit comparison with astronomical observations of dust in different stages of evolution of young stellar objects. In contrast to primitive chondrites, achondrites underwent heavy metamorphism and/or extensive melting and represent more advanced stages of planetesimal evolution. Spectra were obtained from primitive achondrites (acapulcoite, winonaite, ureilite, and brachinite) and differentiated achondrites (eucrite, diogenite, aubrite, and mesosiderite silicates). The ureilite and brachinite show spectra dominated by olivine features, and the diogenite and aubrite by pyroxene features. The acapulcoite, winonaite, eucrite, and mesosiderite silicates exhibit more complex spectra, reflecting their multi-phase bulk mineralogy.Mixtures of spectra of the primitive achondrites and differentiated achondrites in various proportions show good similarities to the spectra of the few Myr old protoplanetary disks HD104237A and V410 Anon 13. A spectrum of the differentiated mesosiderite silicates is similar to the spectra of the mature debris disks HD172555 and HD165014. A mixture of spectra of the primitive ureilite and brachinite is similar to the spectrum of the debris disk HD113766. The results raise the possibility that materials produced in the early stage of planetesimal differentiation occur in the protoplanetary and debris disks.  相似文献

The solar wind provides a source of solar abundance data that only recently is being fully exploited. The Ion Composition Instrument (ICI) aboard the ISEE-3/ICE spacecraft was in the solar wind continuously from August 1978 to December 1982. The results have allowed us to establish long-term average solar wind abundance values for helium, oxygen, neon, silicon, and iron. The Charge-Energy-Mass (CHEM) instrument aboard the CCE spacecraft of the AMPTE mission has measured the abundance of these elements in the magnetosheath and has also added carbon, nitrogen, magnesium, and sulfur to the list. There is strong evidence that these magnetosheath abundances are representative of the solar wind. Other sources of solar wind abundances are Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) experiments and Apollo lunar foils. When comparing the abundances from all of these sources with photospheric abundances, it is clear that helium is depleted in the solar wind while silicon and iron are enhanced. Solar wind abundances for carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and neon correlate well with the photospheric values. The incorporation of minor ions into the solar wind appears to depend upon both the ionization times for the elements and the Coulomb drag exerted by the outflowing proton flux.  相似文献

Abstract— A database of magnetic susceptibility measurements of stony achondrites (acapulcoite‐lodranite clan, winonaites, ureilites, angrites, aubrites, brachinites, howardite‐eucrite‐diogenite (HED) clan, and Martian meteorites, except lunar meteorites) is presented and compared to our previous work on chondrites. This database provides an exhaustive study of the amount of iron‐nickel magnetic phases (essentially metal and more rarely pyrrhotite and titanomagnetite) in these meteorites. Except for ureilites, achondrites appear much more heterogeneous than chondrites in metal content, both at the meteorite scale and at the parent body scale. We propose a model to explain the lack of or inefficient metal segregation in a low gravity context. The relationship between grain density and magnetic susceptibility is discussed. Saturation remanence appears quite weak in most metal‐bearing achondrites (HED and aubrites) compared to Martian meteorites. Ureilites are a notable exception and can carry a strong remanence, similar to most chondrites.  相似文献

Some planetary nebulae in the galactic thick disk display extremely low abundances of heavy elements such as O, Ne, S, and Ar, compared with normal or type II nebulae. Their central stars are generally relatively cool and underluminous, indicating that the progenitor stars had very low masses. It is suggested that strong stellar winds have had an important role in the formation of these objects, which is supported by the large mass loss rates now observed.  相似文献

Abstract— Seven large (10 g) impact melt rock samples from boreholes from the Boltysh impact crater (Ukraine) and six samples from the East Clearwater crater (Canada) were analyzed for Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Pd, Re and Au by the nickel sulfide technique in combination with neutron activation. Earlier analyses of Clearwater East impact melt rocks have shown that they are strongly enriched in Ir, Os, Pd and Re. In this work, I confirm earlier findings and demonstrate similarly high enrichments of Rh and Ru. The average Os/Ir, Ru/Ir, Pd/Ir, Rh/Ir and Ru/Rh ratios of the melt rock samples from Clearwater East are CI-chondritic and yield an average Ir content of 25.2 ± 6.5 ng/g relative to an average upper crust concentration of 0.03 ± 0.02 ng/g Ir. The amount of meteoritic component corresponds to 4 to 7% of a nominal CI component for Clearwater East. The impact melt rock samples from a bore hole from Boltysh are low in Ir with an average of 0.2 ± 0.1 ng/g. The CI-normalized abundances increase from the refractory to the more volatile siderophile elements (Os < Ir < Ru < Rh ~ Pd ~ Au ~ Ni ~ Co). Because of the low Ir anomaly and uncertainties in making corrections (correlations are weak) for indigenous siderophile elements, no clear projectile assignment can be made.  相似文献

An effort has been made to determine the contributions of the S- and R-processes of nucleosynthesis to the abundances of the heavy element isotopes. It has been concluded that the general previous assumption concerning the exclusive assignment of isobars to one or the other of these processes is probably in error. The R-process abundances are characterized by relatively small fluctuations in the abundances of odd and even mass numbers. If this is always true, and such is assumed here, then there are substantial S-process contributions to the abundances of R-process isobars. This is consistent with transient flashing episodes in the S-process neutron production processes. The primary tool for the separation of the abundances due to the two processes therefore had to be achievement of a reasonably smooth and monotonically-decreasing curve of the abundance of the S-process yields times the neutron capture cross-sections versus mass number. Tables of the separate yields are given.  相似文献
