This paper presents results of recent measurements of sand transport made in Chioggia inlet as part of an extensive monitoring programme in the Venetian inlets. Measurements were made in order: (1) to define a relationship between sand transport magnitude and tidal flow; (2) to derive the thresholds for sand transport; (3) to identify the dominant modes of transport; (4) to evaluate the concentration profiles of sand within the benthic boundary layer; (5) to compare bedload transport observations with model predictions using existent bedload formulae; and (6) to produce yearly estimates of bedload transport across the inlet. The vertical distribution of sand in the water column was sampled using modified Helley–Smith bedload samplers at three sites. Transport was found to vary according to the flow and bed grain size, with considerable temporal and spatial variability. A difference of up to three orders of magnitude in transport was observed through the inlet, with higher transport rates measured on the seaward part. The dominant mode of transport in the central inlet was suspension, while bedload was dominant in the mouths. The measured profiles of sand concentration varied with the tidal stage and seabed grain size according to the Rouse parameter (R). R was high at the inlet mouths (1<R<2), indicative of a well-developed bedload layer. The inverse movability number (Ws/U*) was also higher at these sites and appeared to be grain size dependant. Formulae for bedload transport were tested against field data; stochastic methods such as Einstein–Brown, Engelund–Hansen and Van Rijn produce the best fits. The coupled model SHYFEM-Sedtrans05 appears to simulate well observed transport for most conditions of flow. Long-term bedload predictions indicate a dominant export of sand, with a yearly average of 4500 m3.  相似文献

The process-based morphodynamic model Delft3D-MOR and the idealized model of schuttelaars and De Swart (2000) are compared with each other. The differences between the two models in their mathematical-physical formulation as well as the boundary conditions are identified. Their effect on producing cross-sectionally averaged morphological equilibria of tidal inlets with arbitrary length and forced at the seaward boundary by a prescribed M2 and M4 sea- surface elevation is studied and an inventory is made of all relevant differences. The physical formulations in the source code of Delft3D-MOR are modified in various steps to resemble the formulations in the idealized model. The effect of each of the differences between the idealized and process-based model are studied by comparing the results of the idealized model to those of the adapted process-based model. The results of the idealized model can be qualitatively reproduced by the process-based model as long as the same morphological boundary condition is applied at the open sea end. This means that the simplifications concerning the mathematical formulation of the physical processes in the idealized model can be justified. Furthermore, it can be inferred that the morphological boundary condition at the open sea end is an essential element in controlling the behaviour of morphodynamic models for tidal inlets and estuaries.Responsible Editor: Jens Kappenberg  相似文献

General theoretical results via a Hamiltonian formulation are developed for zonal shear flows with the inclusion of the vortex stretching effect of the deformed free surface (equivalent barotropic model). These results include a generalization of the Flierl–Stern–Whitehead zero angular momentum theorem for localized nonlinear structures (whether or not on a β-plane), and sufficient conditions for linear and nonlinear stability in the Liapunov sense–the latter are given as estimates in terms of an L 2-type perturbation norm which are global in time and are derived via bounds on the equilibrium potential vorticity gradient.  相似文献

The tidal circulation patterns in the Terminos Lagoon were studied based on the analysis of 1 year of measurements and numerical simulations using a baroclinic 3D hydrodynamic model, the MARS3D. A gauging network was installed consisting of six self-recording pressure–temperature sensors, a tide gauge station and two current profilers, with pressure and temperature sensors moored in the main lagoon inlets. Model simulations were validated against current and sea level observations and were used to analyse the circulation patterns caused by the tidal forcing. The numerical model was forced with eight harmonic components, four diurnal (K 1, O 1, P 1, Q 1) and four semi-diurnal (M 2, S 2, N 2, K 2), extracted from the TPX0.7 database. The tidal patterns in the study area vary from mixed, mainly diurnal in the two main inlets of the lagoon, to diurnal in its interior. The tidal residual circulation inside the lagoon is dominated by a cyclonic gyre. The results indicate a net flux from the southwest Ciudad del Carmen inlet (CdC) towards the northeast Puerto Real inlet (PtR) along the southern side of the lagoon and the opposite in the northern side. The results indicate two areas of strong currents in the vicinity of the inlets and weak currents inside the lagoon. The area of strong currents in the vicinity of the CdC inlet is larger than that observed in the PtR inlet. Nevertheless, the current analysis indicates that the highest current speeds, which can reach a magnitude of 1.9 m s?1, occurred in PtR. A further analysis of the tide distortion in the inlets revealed that both passages are ebb dominated.  相似文献

根据1984—1986年在湖北省网湖进行渔业资源调查的资料,应用Von Bertalanffy生长方程描述该湖鲫鱼的生长模式,同时按照Joneo体长股分析模型和Thompson-Bell体长预测模型分别推算鲫鱼资源量和不同捕捞强度下资源量和渔获量的理论值,并求得最大持续渔获量。据此,对该湖鲫鱼资源的合理开发和利用进行了分析和讨论,并提出渔业对策。  相似文献

研究了道观河水库细鳞鲴的个体生殖力。细鳞鲴样本由2~ -5~ 龄鱼组成,其个体绝对生殖力与体长、体重和年龄分别呈直线、对数函数和幂函数相关,体长相对生殖力与体长、体重和年龄分别呈双曲线、对数函数和幂函数相关,体重相对生殖力与它们相关不显著。多元逐步回归分析其绝对生殖力和体长相对生殖力均与体重和成熟系数密切相关,而体重相对生殖力仅与成熟系数相关。  相似文献

Summary Using the geocentric constant GM=398 601.3 × 10 9 m 3s –2 , the known value of the angular velocity of the Earth's rotation , Stokes' constants J n (k) and S n (k) upto n=21 (zonal), n=16 (tesseral and sectorial) [2], the geocentric co-ordinates and heights above sea-level of SAO satellite stations [2], the following will be derived: the potential on the geoid Wo, the scale factor for lengths Ro=GM/Wo, the radius-vector of the surface W=Wo, the parameters of the best-fitting Earth tri-axial ellipsoid, and the components of the deflections of the vertical with respect to the geocentric rotational IAG ellipsoid (Lucerne 1967), as well as to the best-fitting geocentric tri-axial ellipsoid. The cross-sectional stability of double inlet systems is investigated using an exploratory model that combines Escoffier’s stability concept for the evolution of the inlet’s cross-sectional area with a two-dimensional, depth-averaged (2DH) hydrodynamic model for tidal flow. The model geometry consists of four rectangular compartments, each with a uniform depth, associated with the ocean, tidal inlets and basin. The water motion, forced by an incoming Kelvin wave at the ocean’s open boundary and satisfying the linear shallow water equations on the f -plane with linearised bottom friction, is in each compartment written as a superposition of eigenmodes, i.e. Kelvin and Poincaré waves. A collocation method is employed to satisfy boundary and matching conditions. The analysis of resulting equilibrium configurations is done using flow diagrams.

Model results show that internally generated spatial variations in the water motion are essential for the existence of stable equilibria with two inlets open. In the hydrodynamic model used in the paper, both radiation damping into the ocean and basin depth effects result in these necessary spatial variations. Coriolis effects trigger an asymmetry in the stable equilibrium cross-sectional areas of the inlets. Furthermore, square basin geometries generally correspond to significantly larger equilibrium values of the inlet cross-sections. These model outcomes result from a competition between a destabilising (caused by inlet bottom friction) and a stabilising mechanism (caused by spatially varying local pressure gradients over the inlets).

Data from the SESAME storm-scale network are used in computing the momentum budget of the prestorm, storm, and poststorm environment of a severe storm complex. In the prestorm period geostrophic flow dominates the environment. With progression into the storm period all terms in the momentum equation become important, as a significant ageostrophic component in the momentum field develops. Turbulent effects are estimated as a residual, and the results indicate that they are comparable in magnitude to the other terms. Their effect is to decrease the positive momentum, particularly at levels above 500 mbar, where the vertical motion is the strongest. Vertical profiles of area means ofu andv indicate that the storm is apparently redistributing momentum downwards, thus reducing the mean shear. In the poststorm period the flow once again becomes largely geostrophic, and a maximum in wind speed reappears at upper levels.  相似文献

Summary Studies of various fluxes, namely net radiation, soil heat, sensible heat and latent heat observed at a tropical station are presented in this paper. The time variation of these fluxes are examined in relation to various meteorological parameters and atmospheric conditions. The turbulent transfer coefficients have been evaluated to examine the applicability of the classical theory or the non-equivalence theory for eddy transport in the lower layers of the atmosphere. The energy balance at a tropical station is evaluated. It is found over year there is a net surplus of 94,000 ly. Bias of Apparent Tracer Ages in Heterogeneous Environments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The interpretation of apparent ages often assumes that a water sample is composed of a single age. In heterogeneous aquifers, apparent ages estimated with environmental tracer methods do not reflect mean water ages because of the mixing of waters from many flow paths with different ages. This is due to nonlinear variations in atmospheric concentrations of the tracer with time resulting in biases of mixed concentrations used to determine apparent ages. The bias of these methods is rarely reported and has not been systematically evaluated in heterogeneous settings. We simulate residence time distributions (RTDs) and environmental tracers CFCs, SF6, 85Kr, and 39Ar in synthetic heterogeneous confined aquifers and compare apparent ages to mean ages. Heterogeneity was simulated as both K‐field variance (σ2) and structure. We demonstrate that an increase in heterogeneity (increase in σ2 or structure) results in an increase in the width of the RTD. In low heterogeneity cases, widths were generally on the order of 10 years and biases generally less than 10%. In high heterogeneity cases, widths can reach 100 s of years and biases can reach up to 100%. In cases where the temporal variations of atmospheric concentration of individual tracers vary, different patterns of bias are observed for the same mean age. We show that CFC‐12 and CFC‐113 ages may be used to correct for the mean age if analytical errors are small.  相似文献

Most laterally loaded piles are flexible in the sense that they are not deformed over their entire lengths. Instead, pile deflections become negligible below an ‘active pile length’ La. This La is an important parameter that governs the overall behavior of a rigidly capped pile group. In the present approach, piles closely grouped together beneath a superstructure are viewed as a single equivalent upright beam whose stiffness matrix determines La. This idea is verified for different cases of pile spacing, and is further extended for nonlinear behavior of soils surrounding grouped piles.  相似文献

We examine the equilibrium form, properties, stability and nonlinear evolution of steadily-rotating simply-connected vortex patches in the single-layer quasi-geostrophic model of geophysical fluid dynamics. This model, valid for rotating shallow-water flow in the limit of small Rossby and Froude numbers, has an intrinsic length scale L D called the “Rossby deformation length” relating the strength of the stratification to that of the background rotation. Here, we generate steadily-rotating vortex equilibria for a wide range of γ?=?L/L D , where L is the typical horizontal length scale of the vortex. We vary both γ (over the range 0.02?≤?γ?≤?10) and the vortex aspect ratio λ (over the range 0?<?λ?<?1). We find two modes of instability arising at sufficiently small aspect ratio λ?<?λ c (γ): an asymmetric (dominantly wave 3) mode at small γ (or large L D ) and a symmetric (dominantly wave 4) mode at large γ (or small L D ). At marginal stability, the asymmetric mode dominates for γ???3, while the symmetric mode dominates for γ???3. The nonlinear evolution of weakly-perturbed unstable equilibria results in major structural changes, in most cases producing two dominant vortex patches and thin, quasi-passive filaments. Overall, the nonlinear evolution can be classified into three principal types: (1) vacillations for a limited range of aspect ratios λ when 5?≤?γ?≤?6, (2) filamentation and a single-dominant vortex for γ???1, and (3) vortex splitting – asymmetric for 1???γ???4 and symmetric for γ???4.  相似文献

Back-barrier tidal flat systems are characterized by basins and inlets through which water is exchanged with the coastal sea by tidal water movements. The hydrographic and morphometric properties at the inlets and in the basins vary considerably, but there is little information available how biogeochemical properties in the water column at these different sites respond to these differences. Therefore, we investigated tidal dynamics of suspended particulate matter (SPM), particulate and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), chlorophyll a, phaeopigments, numbers of particle-associated (PA) and free-living bacteria (FL), bacterial biomass production, and concentrations of dissolved manganese (Mn). Samples were taken at the surface, a mid-depth and 1 m above the bottom at a fixed station at the inlet and in the basin of the Spiekeroog back-barrier tidal flat system in the German Wadden Sea. Five tidal cycles representative for typical seasonal situations, January (winter), April and May (late spring bloom), July (summer), and November (late fall) were studied in 2005 and 2006. In July, processes related to phytoplankton dynamics and bacterial decomposition were much more enhanced in the basin, whereas in April, these processes were enhanced at the inlet but were particularly low within the basin itself. The low values within the basin were a result of the settled phytoplankton spring bloom and represent a rather short period at the decline of this bloom. In November and January, differences were much less pronounced than during the growing season and restricted mainly to SPM and PA bacteria, exhibiting higher values in the basin. FL bacteria, DOC, and dissolved Mn exhibited different patterns and much less differences between the two stations, indicating that biogeochemical processes in the dissolved phase were controlled by different factors than PA biogeochemical processes. These differences reflect the retentive properties of the basin for particles and PA biogeochemical processes, particularly during the growing season, and in general emphasize the high productivity of back-barrier tidal flat systems.  相似文献

Maximum total displacement (D) is plotted against fault or thrust width(W) for 65 faults, thrusts, and groups of faults from a variety of geological environments. Displacements range from 0.4 m to 40 km and widths from 150 m to 630 km, and there is a near linear relationship betweenD andW 2. The required compatibility strains (e s) in rocks adjacent to these faults increases linearly withW and with and ranges frome s=2×10–4 toe s=3×10–1. These are permanent ductile strains, which compare with values ofe s=2×10–5 for the elastic strains imposed during single slip earthquake events, which are characterised by a linear relationship between slip (u) andW.The data are consisten with a simple growth model for faults and thrusts, in which the slip in successive events increases by increments of constant size, and which predicts a relationship between displacement and width of the formD=cW 2. Incorporation of constant ductile strain rate into the model shows that the repreat time for slip events remains constant throughout the life of a fault, while the displacement rate increases with time. An internally consistent model withe s=2×10–5, giving repeat times of 160 years and instantaneous displacement rates of 0.02 cm/yr, 0.2 cm/yr, and 2.0 cm/yr when total displacement is 1 m, 100 m, and 10 km, and slip increasing by 0.5 mm with each event, gives a good approximation of the data. The model is also applicable to stable sliding, the slip rate varying with ductile strain rate and withW 2.  相似文献

The time‐dependent meandering in a thin baroclinic jet over bottom topography is discussed in the quasi‐geostrophic approximation. The motion of the axis of the jet is taken to be vertically coherent and the axis itself is defined as inextensible. The motion is examined from a frame of reference moving with the axis but fixed at an arbitrary longitude in terms of an open ocean spatial initial value problem. The velocities of the axis and of the jet are quasi‐geostrophic, and vorticity conservation for the first non‐geostrophic components constrains the evolution of the axis and gives a path equation. The spatial linearized stability problem is studied and the jet is found to be baroclinically unstable to path disturbances of sufficiently high frequency which amplify downstream. An exact solution is obtained to the nonlinear path equation over a flat bottom with no ß‐effect. The evolution of the path of these unstable meanders is such that the path closes itself and forms rings (at which point the analysis breaks down). It is proposed that the baroclinic jet processes studied here are fundamental to the dynamics of Gulf Stream meandering and isolated eddy production.  相似文献

This paper investigates the behavior of katabatic flow induced by an idealized, thermally inhomogeneous surface; a strip of surface cooling that has a finite width in the along-slope direction and is infinitely long in the cross-slope direction. Numerical simulations using the Boussinesq equations of motion and the thermodynamic energy equation are performed for various slope angles and strip lengths. The underlying dynamical processes in the katabatic jet and the near environment are explored by considering the along-slope momentum balance after a steady state has been achieved. The inhomogeneous nature of the surface forcing also induces a response in the environment that extends very far away from the sloped surface. Nearly horizontal jets close to the vertical heights of both sides of the cold strip are observed in the environment. A horizontal vorticity analysis is performed on these horizontal jets to ascertain their dynamical structure.  相似文献
