The paper presents a short survey of large Soviet experience in the field of artificial freezing and cooling of soils. Some examples of artificial ground freezing used for the development of mineral deposits, in mining and coal industry, in subway construction are given. A special field of the cold application in the construction is the cooling of soils which have already had the negative temperature. This engineering method is applied in permafrost regions for improving the strengthening properties of the weak soils used as the bases of structures. In the USSR this method is used successfully for improving the bearing capacity of frozen soils and for the creation of frozen waterproof screens in hydrotechnical engineering as well. Some examples of the employment of this method are also given. 相似文献

A protracted phase of aggradation without evidence for episodes of cutting and filling occurred in the drainage of Wadi el Sheikh between about 65,000 and 12,000 B.P. Marl sediments in the deposits at the oasis of Tarfat el Quidrein denote freshwater ponds or marshes that attracted Upper Paleolithic, Ahmarian hunter-gatherers. Wetter conditions favoring the formation of the marls are explained by local, geomorphic factors including the orographic influence of nearby mountains. A major phase of down-cutting initiated at the end of the Pleistocene and beginning of the Holocene is the only climatically forced gradational change seen in the geomorphic record. 相似文献

Examination of calcareous slags from several historical smelting sites has indicated that the specific soil environment, in particular the soil pH, may have a very significant effect on the rate of weathering and metal release. A series of acid titration experiments were used to investigate whether the weathering of the calcareous slags could be increasing the buffering effect of the soils through accumulating CaCO 3 in the slag-rich horizons. Such a buffering mechanism would maintain high pH levels and so limit the migration of Pb through the soil profile. Three sites were chosen; one with high levels of Ca in the soil, one with relatively low Ca levels and one with intermediate Ca levels. Analysis of metal concentrations was determined using ICP-AES. The results support the hypothesis that, while the soil pH remains between 8 and 5, the CaCO 3 provides an effective buffer against the mobilisation of Pb. Between soil pH 5 and 4 it is suggested that both CaCO 3 and PbCO 3 participate in the buffering reaction, which slows down with a further drop in pH. However, this reaction ultimately releases Pb into the soil solution, although at a much slower rate than would be the case in an unbuffered soil. An important implication of these findings is that migration rates of metals in soils cannot be assumed to be constant over time, if such buffering mechanisms are operational. 相似文献

Hearths are important archaeological features, serving to infer past practices related to hominin subsistence and social behaviors. The identification of hearths is not always straightforward due to post‐depositional processes. In karstic cave environments in particular it is not always easy to distinguish, in the field or in the laboratory, between geogenic and anthropogenic cemented features because both are composed of calcite. Here we present a novel study in which bulk oxygen and carbon isotopic analyses were used in order to unequivocally identify anthropogenic calcite derived from hearths in the Neanderthal site of Amud Cave (Israel). We demonstrate that the isotopic composition of wood ash is distinctively different from that of geogenic calcite. The linear relationship observed between carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of the various sediment types in Amud Cave is interpreted as a mixing line between wood ash and geogenic calcite, thus enhancing our understanding of the origins of sedimentological variability at the site and showing that not all of the cemented sediments in Amud Cave should be regarded as hearths. Our study suggests that the relative abundance of validated hearths in the various areas of the cave may be associated with Neanderthal use of space in Amud Cave. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

Soils from many industrial sites in southeastern USA are contaminated with As because of the application of herbicide containing As 2O 3. Among those contaminated sites, two industrial sites, FW and BH, which are currently active and of most serious environmental concerns, were selected to characterize the occurrence of As in the contaminated soils and to evaluate its environmental leachability. The soils are both sandy loams with varying mineralogical and organic matter contents. Microwave-assisted acid digestion (EPA method 3051) of the contaminated soils indicated As levels of up to 325 mg/kg and 900 mg/kg (dry weight basis) for FW and BH soils, respectively. However, bulk X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis failed to find any detectable As-bearing phases in either of the studied soil samples. Most of the soil As was observed by scanning electron microscopy, coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), to be disseminated on the surfaces of fine-grained soil particles in close association with Al and Fe. A few As-bearing particles were detected in BH soil using electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Synchrotron micro-XRD and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analyses indicated that these As-rich particles were possibly phaunouxite, a mineral similar to calcium arsenate, which could have been formed by natural weathering after the application of As 2O 3. However, the scarcity of those particles eliminated them from playing any important role in As sequestration. 相似文献

紫色土是非地带性土壤, 具有磁性本底值低的特征, 是研究成土初始阶段土壤磁性矿物与成土因素关系的良好材料。目前, 国内紫色土系统的环境磁学研究处于起步阶段。本研究以福建省武夷山市的紫色土剖面(简称WYS剖面, 地理坐标为27°44'24'N, 118°00'36'E; 海拔216.3m)为分析对象。该剖面发育于白垩系紫红色粉砂质泥岩之上, 厚度为0.9m。通过系统的环境磁学研究, 结合漫反射光谱一阶导数曲线、色度指标和常量地球化学元素指标, 分析其磁学特征的层次分异, 探讨磁学参数对成壤的指示意义。结果表明: 1)WYS剖面以反铁磁性矿物赤铁矿为主。A层的亚铁磁性矿物磁铁矿含量略有增加, 超顺磁(SP)颗粒含量更高, 磁颗粒相对更细。成壤作用是造成A层和C层的磁学特征差异的主导因素。2)WYS剖面母岩具有易于物理风化、不易化学风化的特征。由于成土时间短, 即便在湿热气候条件下, 母质中磁性矿物转化微弱。母质和成土时间是影响紫色土磁学性质的主导因素。3)成壤过程中, 少部分赤铁矿转化为磁铁矿。磁学参数的微小变化响应于弱成壤作用, 表明紫色土磁学特征可以非常敏感地指示成壤强度。 相似文献

The geochemical record of human impact within three archaeological sites in SE Poland was analysed. The total levels of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and P were defined. The content of the studied elements was found to be higher than the determined geochemical background. In all cases, significantly higher concentrations (2–3 times) of trace metals were found in sediments filling small depressions and foot-slope locations. These concentrations were often higher than in the profiles within the archaeological objects. The vertical distributions of elements were also different from soil profiles located on flat surfaces. The study thus confirms that microtopography and soil erosion may impact (diversify) the initial horizontal and vertical variation of geochemistry of soils within archaeological sites caused by human activity. This should be taken into account when using geochemical prospecting in archaeological studies in areas with varied topography. 相似文献

The magnetic particulates from anthropogenic activities can be detected by magnetic methods rapidly and cost-effectively. This study focused on the investigation of vertical variations in magnetic properties in soil profiles and magnetic enhancement originating in Baoshan, Shanghai. Also the feasibility of using arable and urban park soils as a new context for magnetic monitoring was explored. A combination of magnetic and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques was applied to three soil profiles. Non-pedogenic magnetic enhancement in topsoil was recorded at all three sites accompanied by coarsening of magnetic grain size. The dominant magnetic properties reflect multi-domain (MD) and pseudo-stable single domain (PSD) ferrimagnetic minerals. Both of magnetic concentrations and grain size decrease with the depth, depending on the pollutant input, soil type and degree of vertical mixing. SEM images confirmed the presence of anthropogenic particulates fly-ash. It was concluded from this study that topsoil magnetic enhancement arising from atmospheric contaminants was readily identifiable in both arable fields and urban parks, thus broadening the scope of magnetic research on urban and industrial pollution. 相似文献

Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) membrane lipids occur in soils and peat bogs and are assumed to be produced by anaerobic bacteria. Two indices based on the distribution of these lipids in soils, the Cyclisation of Branched Tetraethers (CBT) and the Methylation of Branched Tetraethers (MBT) index have been shown to linearly relate to pH, and to mean annual air temperature (MAT) and pH, respectively. To directly evaluate the impact of changes in soil temperature on the MBT/CBT proxy, we determined these indices in soils sampled from a transect away from two hot springs in California, which provided a set of soils similar in composition but with different temperatures (12–41 °C). The CBT values of these geothermally heated soils show a good relation with pH ( R2 0.76), similar to that of a global MBT/CBT calibration set. Also, the relationship between MBT, soil pH and temperature for the geothermally heated soils is similar to that of a global soil calibration set, although the intercept for the geothermally heated soils is significantly lower, likely because our data set is based on in situ soil temperatures rather than MAT. The results confirm the dependence of the MBT index on soil temperature and pH and support the applicability of the MBT/CBT indices as a proxy for continental palaeotemperatures and past soil pH. 相似文献

A national-scale survey of the environment in and around mines was conducted to evaluate the status of total As contamination in agricultural soils surrounding numerous abandoned metal mines in Korea. This survey aimed to compare As concentrations in soils in relation to geology and mineralization types of mines. A total of 16,386 surface soil (0–15 cm in depth) samples were taken from agricultural lands near 343 abandoned mines (within 2 km of each mine). These samples were decomposed by aqua regia and analyzed for As by AAS with a hydride-generation (HG) device. To compare As levels in soils meaningfully with geology and mineralization types, three sub-classification criteria were adapted: (1) five mineralization types, (2) four valuable ore mineral types, and (3) four parent rock types. The average concentration of As in all the soils was 11.6 mg kg −1 with a range of 0.01–4230 mg kg −1. Based on the mineralization types, average As concentrations (mg kg −1) in the soils decreased in the order of pegmatite (18.2) > hydrothermal replacement (14.5) > sedimentary deposits (12.4) > hydrothermal vein (10.7) > skarn (4.08). In terms of the valuable ore mineral types, the concentrations decreased in the order of Sn, W, Mo, Fe and Mn mines > Au, Ag, and base metal mines > Au and Ag mines ≈ base metal mines. For parent rock types, soils from metamorphic rocks and heterogeneous rocks exhibited enhanced As levels related to both igneous and sedimentary rocks. Therefore, it can be concluded that soils from highly altered rocks subject to metamorphic and igneous activities contained relatively high concentrations of As in the surface environment. 相似文献

The intrinsic room temperature magnetic properties of pure calcite were determined from a series of natural crystals, and they were found to be highly dependent on the chemical composition. In general, dia-, para-, and ferromagnetic components contribute to the magnetic susceptibility and the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS). With a combination of magnetic measurements and chemical analysis these three contributions were determined and related to their mineralogical sources. The intrinsic diamagnetic susceptibility of pure calcite is − 4.46 ± 0.16 × 10 − 9 m 3/kg (− 12.09 ± 0.5 × 10 − 6 SI) and the susceptibility difference is 4.06 ± 0.03 × 10 − 10 m 3/kg (1.10 ± 0.01 × 10 − 6 SI). These diamagnetic properties are easily dominated by other components. The paramagnetic contribution is due to paramagnetic ions in the crystal lattice that substitute for calcium; these are mainly iron and manganese. The measured paramagnetic susceptibility agrees with the values calculated from the known concentration of paramagnetic ions in the crystals according to the Curie law of paramagnetic susceptibility. Substituted iron leads to an increase in the AMS. The paramagnetic susceptibility difference was found to correlate linearly with the iron content for concentrations between 500 and 10,000 ppm. An empirical relation was determined: ( k1 − k3) para (kg/m 3) = Fe-content (ppm) × (1 ± 0.1) × 10 − 12 (kg/m 3/ppm). The maximum susceptibility difference (Δ k = k1 − k3) was found to be unaffected by iron contents below 100 ppm. Ferromagnetic contributions due to inclusions of ferromagnetic minerals can dominate the susceptibility. They were detected by acquisition of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) and their contribution to the AMS was separated by high-field measurements. 相似文献

In this study, the presence of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPL) in sandy soils are detected using a TDR probe system and the eigendecomposition method of analysis. As a demonstration, five NAPLs with different physicochemical properties (acetone, benzene, heptane, trichloroethylene, and xylene; Table 1) were used. Samples were prepared in such a way that the soil pore fluid has different contents of deionized water and NAPLs. For each experiment, a pulse signal with known characteristics was used and reflected signals were captured by an oscilloscope and analyzed using the eigendecomposition method. Autoregressive modeling and singular value decomposition were used to calculate the eigenvalues. The most significant eigenvalues were identified based on their power spectrum. The relative eigenvalue of the first mode (Eow), which is a measure of the power carried by the signal, was calculated and correlated to NAPL type and content, and octanol water partition coefficient (log Kow). The results indicated that for the same NAPL content, as log Kow increases, Eow decreases due to increase of hydrophobicity. For the same log Kow, as the organic content in soil pore fluid increases, Eow increases due to decrease of dielectric properties of the pore fluids. 相似文献

Vast expanses of arid, saline soils that occur along the Arabian Gulf seaboard and elsewhere possess a very low density and strength that necessitate improvement before any actual construction takesplace. For large-scale constructions, several field improvement techniques have recently been implemented with various degrees of success. In surficial, small-scale applications, chemical stabilization provides a potential technique to improve the inferior properties of these soils, known locally as sabkha. A literature search indicates that chemical stabilization of soils usingasphalt, lime and cement is usually conducted at lower moisture contents than the optimum. Such moisture contents are also much lower than the natural moisture content of sabkha, and if applied to sabkha in the field, this wouldrequire lowering the moisture content before any stabilization commenced; whichwould be neither feasible nor economical. In this investigation, an eastern Saudi sabkha soil was chemically stabilized at its natural moisture level, which varies from 16% to 22%. In addition to the characterization of the soil and standard compaction tests, cement and lime sabkha mixtures were prepared at five additions and cured for up to 90 days in plastic wrap. Results indicate that cement-stabilized sabkha gained high strength with time and proved to have a potential use in construction. 相似文献

The geoarchaeology of Diring Yuriakh, perhaps the oldest firmly documented archaeological site in Siberia, at more than 260,000 years old, is important for modeling the peopling of Northern Asia and North America. This article focuses on some important details about the stratigraphy of the Diring site, which have previously only been published in Russian. There are two major geoarchaeological problems at Diring. First, the stratigraphic position of the layer containing the supposed pebble tools (relative to Middle Pleistocene sediments at the site) is not well defined. Second, there remains doubt as to the nature of the association between the majority of the Diring artifacts and the sediments dated to between ca. 267,000 and 366,000 years ago. Until these problems are resolved, the proposed Lower Paleolithic dating for the Diring site must be considered as provisional. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

Variations in environmental tritium and moisture content with depth was measured at three sites in sandy-loam and sandy-clay-loam soils, sampled near Hyderabad in May 1974. The tritium input function for precipitation around Hyderabad for the years 1969 to 1973 was determined through measurements on available rain samples and through extrapolation of strontium-90 data for HASL network station at Rawalpindi. Three peaks noticed in the tritium input function and probably caused by Chinese thermonuclear tests in 1970, 1971 and 1972, could be matched with those sequentially identified in the soil profiles. This identification has helped in dating the soil moisture and in calculation of average annual recharge to groundwater. The recharge was found to be 15·4 cm and 14·6 cm for sandy-loam and 11·1 cm for sandy-clay-loam soils. 相似文献

The Uonuma group, located in the Niigata oil field, represents the upper part of a thick and mostly continuous series of late Cenozoic sediments, in which only the Uonuma is of nonmarine origin. Two main magnetozones and four subzones are recognized and correlated with the Matuyama Reversed and Brunhes Normal polarity epochs. Pollen spectra indicate a climatic deterioration between the Jaramillo Event and the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary, possibly commencing during the Jaramillo Event. 相似文献

Soil samples taken from excavated pits on traverses across New Zealand’s Scott Base, Antarctica, were leached with water and 0.01 M HNO 3 and the leachates analysed for Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. The soils had high conductivity and pH values generally increasing with depth and in the range 8.3–10.1. The water leachate generally contained most of the extractable metals except Mn and Cd, and As. Linear relationships were observed between some metals leached into alkaline solution and the Fe in those solutions. The ratios to Fe were comparable to those of the host basanite, and this observation is interpreted as showing that these metals are incorporated in fine mineral particulates derived directly from the rock mass. Outliers in leachable metal concentrations in the soils indicated appreciable contamination of the soil from anthropogenic sources with Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn as well as As. In some locations high concentrations of Ag and Cd correspond to specific sources and drainage channels. High concentrations of Pb were widely spread and in the top soil layers whereas the elevated concentrations of Zn were distributed throughout the soil profiles indicating atmospheric sources and different mobilities within the soils. Winter flounder ( Pseudopleuronectes americanus) were sampled from three sites located near Norwalk, New Haven, and Niantic, Connecticut, in Long Island Sound during February 1987, to evaluate the degree of chemical contamination and to determine possible effects of contaminant exposure. At each site, sediment and infaunal invertebrates were also collected and analyzed for trace metals and organic chemicals. Specimens of liver and kidney from winter flounder were examined for histopathological conditions, including the presence of macrophage aggregates in liver tissue. Liver samples were also analyzed for DNA damage (i.e., the formation of adducts between DNA and chemical contaminants). Blood samples were collected and analyzed for erythrocyte micronuclei. The sampling site near New Haven was determined to be the most affected site, from the standpoints of greater chemical contamination and possible effects on winter flounder. Concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were highest in sediment from this site, and the highest prevalences of the histopathological changes and DNA alterations were also found in the livers of winter flounder from this site. No differences in the concentrations of contaminants in fish or in frequencies of erythrocyte micronuclei in fish blood were found between sites. None of the sites sampled had contaminant levels or prevalences of lesions as high as previously found at other East Coast locations (e.g., Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, Raritan Bay, New York). Overall, our results indicate moderate levels of pollution at two of the urban sites in Long Island Sound and provide a framework for expanded studies to better define the extent and impact of chemical pollution in Long Island Sound. 相似文献
