A small volume of experimental work with cyanobacteria in New Zealand has been produced through the last two decades. Except for some studies with geothermal organisms biased to New Zealand conditions, most work has followed the world‐wide trends in cyanobacterial research. There has been some emphasis on N2‐fixing species, but symbiotic relationships, metabolic kinetics, nutrient and other environmental factors promoting ecological dominance, and toxicity have been investigated.  相似文献

Abstract

The density and biomass of fish and crayfish, and the production of eels, was compared among streams in native forest, exotic forest, and pasture. Populations were estimated by multiple‐pass electroshocking at 11 sites in hill‐country streams in the Waikato region, North Island. Three sites were in native forest, four in exotic forest, and four in pasture. Length of stream sampled at each site was 46–94 m (41–246 m2 in area), and catchment areas up stream of the sites ranged from 0.44 to 2.01 km2.

A total of 487 fish were caught. The species were longfinned and shortfinned eels, banded kokopu, Cran's and redfinned bullies, and common smelt. Eels were the most abundant fish in all three land‐use types, and shortfinned eels were more abundant at pastoral sites (mean density 1.11 fish m?2) than longfinned eels (mean density 0.129 fish m?2). Banded kokopu were present only at forested sites. Mean fish densities were greater at pastoral sites (1.55 fish m?2) than under either native forest (0.130 fish m?2) or exotic forest (0.229 fish m?2). Mean fish biomass was also greater at pastoral sites (89.7 g m?2) than under native forest (12.8 g m?2) or exotic forest (19.3 g m?2). Longfinned eels made a greater contribution to the fish biomass at all sites than did shortfinned eels. Densities of crayfish were high (0.46–5.40 crayfish m?2), but were not significantly different between land‐use types. Crayfish biomass ranged from 1.79 to 11.2 g m?2. Total eel production was greater at pastoral sites (mean 17.9 g m?2 year1) than at forest sites (mean 2.39 gm?2 year?1).  相似文献

Photographs and a preserved head are identified as Odontaspis herbsti Whitley, 1950, an Australian sand shark growing to about 3 m long and similar to the Mediterranean O. ferox Risso, but differing in having a uniform grey body without black markings on the back or sides. No living odontaspidids have previously been reported from New Zealand. Six specimens were trawled in 119–165 m off Table Cape, Hawke Bay, in October‐November 1972. Californian and. East Atlantic (Madeira) specimens are treated as conspecific with O. herbsti. It is suggested that O. herbsti is normally an inhabitant of the continental slope, and that the present records are of a few individuals that have strayed on to the shelf.  相似文献

The threat posed by ocean acidification (OA) to the diversity and productivity of New Zealand marine ecosystems is assessed in a synthesis of published trends and impacts. A 20-year time series in Subantarctic water, and a national coastal monitoring programme, provide insight into pH variability, and context for experimental design, modelling and projections. A review of the potential impact of changes in the carbonate system on the major phyla in New Zealand waters confirms international observations that calcifying organisms, and particularly their early life-history stages, are vulnerable. The synthesis considers ecosystem and socio-economic impacts, and identifies current knowledge gaps and future research directions, including mechanistic studies of OA sensitivity. Advanced ecosystem models of OA, that incorporate the indirect effects of OA and interactions with other climate stressors, are required for robust projection of the future status of New Zealand marine ecosystems.  相似文献

Codium fragile (Sur.) Hariot subsp. tomentosoides (Van Goor) Silva is reported from Auckland Harbour. Although macroscopically similar to native forms of C. fragile, the subspecies can be positively identified by utricle anatomy. Its vigorous growth and efficient dispersal by asexual reproduction, and possibly by vegetative fragments, have resulted in a rapid spread to adjacent localities. These features suggest that the plant could be a nuisance to the shellfish industry as it has been in North America. The manner in which this weed was introduced is not clear, but transportation as a fouling organism, on ships is most probable.  相似文献

The occurrence of fish larvae and the effect of diel and tidal variation on catches was studied at about biweekly intervals for a year in Whangateau Harbour, a small well mixed northern New Zealand estuary. Larvae from 31 taxa were identified. The annual pattern of larval occurrence was typical for fish in temperate waters, with a major peak of abundance in early summer. For six taxa, larval densities were significantly greater in night-time than in daytime catches, and analysis of length-frequency distributions suggested that for two species this was due to daytime net avoidance.No significant differences were found between the densities of larvae caught on flood and ebb tides, but changes in length-frequency distributions were significant for two species. Recently hatched larvae of an unidentified goby were found leaving the harbour, where they were probably spawned, while older larvae of this species appeared to be recruiting back in. Larvae of the flounder Rhobosolea plebeia were also apparently recruiting into the harbour. In the absence of a two-layered circulation pattern larvae relied upon tidal transport for recruitment, and probaby ensured their retention by rapidly settling to the bottom.  相似文献

Previous records of the frigate tuna Auxis thazard (Lacépède, 1802) were probably misidentifications of the slender tuna Allothunnus fallai. Frigate tuna were caught on the north‐east coast of New Zealand during 1975–76; the modal fork length of 176 specimens was 32–34 cm, and more detailed morpho‐metry and counts from 4 specimens are presented.  相似文献

In the region between 30°S and northern New Zealand, vertical salinity profiles through the core of the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) show a high degree of spatial and temporal variability, and this variability is much larger than that found in nearby ocean areas. Characteristic features are interleaving of salinity layers and large changes in the salinity minimum between adjacent stations. Quantifying the changes through the calculation of an intrusion index highlights the degree of variability and the importance of boundary mixing along the New Zealand slope. However, the main cause of the variability is the meeting and mixing of higher salinity AAIW, arriving from the north‐west (having travelled around the subtropical gyre) with lower salinity AAIW arriving by more direct entry from the north‐east. These waters meet in the region through the action of the meso‐scale eddy field. Present data indicate that where strong salinity interleaving occurs, the length scales are of the order of 10 km and the time scales are of the order of a few days. Resolution of the processes at work will require studies on finer scales than presently available.  相似文献

One hundred and four taxa of planktonic cyanobacteria (blue‐green algae) have been recorded from New Zealand lakes: 32 belong to the Chroococcales, 72 to the Nostocales. None of the taxa is endemic to New Zealand; most (if not all) are cosmopolitan. On average, more taxa have been reported from North Island (7.8 ± 6.7, N = 69) than South Island lakes (3.3 ± 3.9, N = 59). This difference is attributable, in part, to the large proportion of glacial lakes in the South Island, which are commonly poor in plant nutrients and possess sparse phytoplankton populations. Many of the taxa show a strong preference for eutrophic conditions. Notable exceptions are Anabaena affinis and Gomphosphaeria lacustris, which occur in a large proportion of mesotrophic (48%) and oligotrophic lakes (43%), respectively. Taxa which are often abundant and frequently responsible for conspicuous water‐blooms are Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena circinalis, A. flos‐aquae and A. spiroides. The limited population data available indicate a high level of interannual variability in the timing, magnitude, and duration of cyanobacterial blooms in New Zealand lakes.  相似文献

The quantitative distribution of Centropages aucklandicus in summer is described. This coastal species, endemic to New Zealand, is found round the whole country except in the north. It has a northern limit coincident with the 19°c isotherm. Possible factors operating to conserve C. aucklandicus in coastal waters, temperature, salinity, food and behaviour, are discussed.  相似文献

Fish abundance data from selected electric‐fishing records in the New Zealand Freshwater Fish Database (NZFFD) were used to identify riverine fish communities and to examine their relationship to environmental variables included in the NZFFD. Only 21 fish species, 18 native species, and three introduced salmonids, were present at 1% or more of the sites. We defined 12 fish communities characterised by a dominant species: two salmonid communities, two non‐diadromous native communities, and eight communities characterised by diadromous native species. Altitude and distance inland were the two most significant variables, reflecting differences between communities dominated by diadromous and non‐diadromous species. The next most important variables were related to the geographic location of the site. Other environmental variables that were highly correlated with the fish community assignments were stream width and percentage of native forest or farming land use in the catchment upstream of the site. Of the local habitat variables, percentage of cascade habitat and percentage of sand substrate were the most important discriminators between communities. Despite having only a limited set of broad‐scale environmental variables, we achieved 47% success in the prediction of community membership using multiple discriminant analysis, with another 21% of sites being near misses. A greater knowledge of barriers to migration of diadromous species and fine‐scale variables describing in‐stream habitat would probably increase the predictive ability of the model, although collection of such data is time consuming and therefore impractical on a national scale.  相似文献

The occurrence of planktonic carapid eggs in Otago waters, of young stages of Echiodon rendahli off Castlepoint, and the possible presence of unrecorded members of the family Carapidae in New Zealand waters is discussed. Hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae Hector) year class strength (YCS) varies substantially from year to year. We examined associations between YCS and climate variables including the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), satellite sea surface temperatures (SSTs), synoptic weather patterns, wind speeds, and the depth of the west coast, South Island, New Zealand, mixed layer. We evaluated the predictions of a model developed 2 years ago to predict YCS of the western and eastern New Zealand hoki stocks from similar climate variables. New predictive models were developed using updated data. Strong year classes of the western hoki stock were associated with cooler SSTs, a negative SOI, and westerly or south‐westerly flow along the west coast of the South Island. We accordingly predict a moderately strong 1997 year class and weak 1998 and 1999 year classes for the western stock of hoki. The current model cannot predict eastern stock year class strengths with confidence.  相似文献

Fish exclosures were deployed within shallow, eutrophic Lake Rotoroa, Hamilton, New Zealand to assess the influence of an alien‐dominated fish population on establishment by charophytes. Replicated mesh exclosures were placed at sites differing in wave exposure and received transplanted charophyte oospores and plants, with identical material placed outside. Charophyte establishment from oospores and plant biomass were greater inside exclosures compared with outside. Wave exposure did not depress germling response and the effect of fish exclosures on charophyte establishment was least apparent at the most exposed site. Exclosures did not have a statistically significant influence on the light climate, and epiphytic algal development was similar or higher inside the exclosures. However, sediment mobilisation was lower inside the exclosures. Results suggest that fish were primarily responsible for the poor performance of unprotected charophytes in Lake Rotoroa, with fish effects on plants operating via direct disturbance or grazing.  相似文献

Ultraviolet digestion was found to be simpler and more convenient than perchloric acid digestion in the determination of total dissolved phosphorus in a variety of New Zealand freshwaters, but had limitations when used on waters with a high humic acid content.

Perchloric acid digestion was more powerful, breaking down polyphosphate bonds not affected by ultraviolet, but was subject to phosphorus losses from “bumping” during evaporation to dryness.  相似文献
