Sea‐surface temperature data from satellite imagery is used to improve the understanding of the ocean‐current circulation of an area to the south‐east of Cook Strait, New Zealand. A dominant feature of the satellite imagery is an eddy, apparently locked in position, which has a considerable influence on the interaction of the East Cape Current and the Southland Current which meet in this region.  相似文献

Abstract

In September 1986, dense concentrations of freshly spawned hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae) eggs were located in eastern Cook Strait. A follow‐up exploratory trawl survey of Cook Strait and the east coast of the South Island, in August and September 1987, located concentrations of spawning hoki in canyon features in Cook Strait, off the Kaikoura coast, and off Banks Peninsula. The largest concentration, 14 km long, 4 km wide, and up to 150 m thick occurred in Cook Strait Canyon, with catch rates of hoki up to 48 t h?1. Gonad conditions of male and female hoki showed they were actively spawning. Catch rates in Cook Strait Canyon were comparable to the main fishery on the west coast of the South Island but were much lower off Kaikoura and Banks Peninsula. Hoki associated with spawning concentrations were not feeding. Bycatch species were mostly ling (Genypterus blacodes) and spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), and both were preying on hoki. Spiny dogfish were also feeding on spawned fish eggs. The possible stock structure of hoki is discussed.  相似文献

The Bohai Strait is the only passage-way of the semienclosed Bohai Sea into the outer ocean. The various dynamical processes have great effects on both sides of the strait, especially on the Bohai Sea. Tidal current dominates in the strait, and among the tida! components the M, component tide is prevailing.The seawater in the strait is homogeneous vertically almost the whole year because of strong tidal mixing. The M, component tide was simulated numerically using two dimensional barotropical model, and the Eulerian tide-induced residual currents were also deduced. The results showed that the tidal currents were dominated by the coastal line and topography. There exist many eddies in the tide-induced residual current fields, particularly near the northern coast.On the basis of the simulation of the tidal currents, the movements of the water particles in the strait were tracked by means of Lagrangian techniques. The analysis of 103 samples collected quantitatively from the southern Taiwan Strait (22°4'-24°3'N, 117°5'-119°9'E), China, in August 1997 indicates that the abundance of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) ranges from 391 to 1 846 ×103 cell/dm3, with an average of 949 × 103 cell/dm3, and 96.2% of cells are in size of 2-22 μm in all HNF met in the samples. The HNF cells are 9.83-45.79 μg/dm3 after conversion from cell number to carbon content, with an average of 22.82 μg/dm3 . The HNF abundance is relatively low in comparison with other areas. The nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients of the water are lower than previous investigations, which may be caused by the El Nino. The biomass of HNF is higher in southern waters, where cell concentration is 3-5 folds higher than that in other waters, and nearly 2-fold as high as the average of the investigated areas. Tide gauges distributed all over the world provide valuable information for monitoring mean sea level changes. The statistical models used in estimating sea level change from the tide gauge data assume implicitly that the random model components are stationary in variance. We show that for a large number of global tide gauge data this is not the case for the seasonal part using a variate-differencing algorithm. This finding is important for assessing the reliability of the present estimates of mean sea level changes because nonstationarity of the data may have marked impact on the sea level rate estimates, especially, for the data from short records.  相似文献

Time-series data of the vertical structure of the Soya Warm Current (SWC) were obtained by a bottom-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in the middle of the Soya Strait from September 2006 to July 2008. The site of the ADCP measurement was within the coverage of the ocean-radar measurement around the strait. The volume transport of the SWC through the strait is estimated on the basis of both the vertical structure observed by the ADCP and the horizontal structure observed by the radars for the first time. The annual transport estimates are 0.62–0.67 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3s−1). They are somewhat smaller than the difference between the previous estimates of the inflow and outflow through other straits in the Sea of Japan, and smaller than those obtained in the region downstream of the strait during 2004–05 (0.94–1.04 Sv). The difference in the two periods may be attributed to interannual variability of the SWC and/or the different measurement locations.  相似文献

State‐of‐the‐art technology is presently being used for the acquisition of water level and meteorological data in the Intra‐Americas Sea to support the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) network of sea‐level monitoring stations. GLOSS stations provide data for the investigation of regional relative sea level change in areas of complex tectonic motion, national geodetic vertical datums, near real‐time data for input to climatic diagnostic numerical models, calibration of satellite altimeter and scatterometer data, and the evaluation of the feasibility of producing synoptic mean sea level charts for the prediction of climatic trends, long‐range weather forecasts, and ocean processes.  相似文献

In March 1996, China fired missiles near Taiwan’s two largest ports, namely, Keelung in the north and Kaohsiung in the south. The event disrupted sea and air transport in the area and was considered as a ‘partial blockade’ of Taiwan. China’s missile tests conducted in the waters of the Taiwan Strait give rise to several international law questions, such as: did China’s missile tests amount to a blockade of Taiwan and accordingly are subject to the international law of blockade: and does China, as a member of the United Nations, have the right, under international law, to fire missiles across the Taiwan Strait to intimidate Taiwan. This paper addresses these legal issues. This paper concludes by suggesting that China’s missile tests, in legal terms, did not amount to a blockade, but a military operation at sea, and that China failed to pass the reasonableness test for justifying its missile tests on the high seas and, thus, could be seen as in violation of international law. However, a caveat is given in the conclusion, that is, the legality of China’s missile tests in the waters so close to Taiwan’s coasts cannot but be appraised in the context of how other members of the international community view Taiwan’s legal status and the position they take regarding whether the Taiwan question is indeed entirely an internal matter of China.  相似文献

Fish species are abundant in the southern waters of the Taiwan Strait and its adjacent areas where 678 species in all are presnt, mostly belonging to 18 families such as Carangidae, Sciaenidae, Serranidae, Goboodae and others. In the composition of species, 73% of them are those distributing in the Indo-Malayan Region and the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific Region. The fish faunas have greater similarity to those in the northern waters of the South China Sea, 96% being in common. Species  相似文献
