Recent interpretations of the reflectance spectra of the icy Galilean satellites (Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto) have implied very ice-rich surfaces, as high as 90 wt% ice even on the dark surface of Callisto. A reevaluation of the spectra, taking into account the depth of the 3-μm fundamental water ice absorption feature as well as the shorter wavelength bands, suggests that the spectra of at least Ganymede and Callisto may also be consistent with much lower ice abundances if the ice is segregated from the nonicy material. Reasonable fits to all band depths (including the shallow 1.04- and 1.25-μm bands) are obtained with around 50% areal coverage of ice on Ganymede and 10% on Callisto, the rest of the surface being occupied by carbonaceous chondrite-like material which has a strong 3-μm absorption due to bound water. Europa's spectrum probably indicates a homogeneous icy surface. The darkness beyond 3 μm, and lack of a 3.6-μm peak, for all three objects may be consistent with the presence of small quantities of sulfuric acid on the satellite surfaces.  相似文献

The Galilean satellites’ dynamics has been studied extensively during the last century. In the past it was common to use analytical expansions in order to get simple models to integrate, but with the new generation of computers it became prevalent the numerical integration of very sophisticated and almost complete equations of motion. In this article we aim to describe the resonant and secular motion of the Galilean satellites through a Hamiltonian, depending on the slow angles only, obtained with an analytical expansion of the perturbing functions and an averaging operation. In order to have a model as near as possible to the actual dynamics, we added perturbations and we considered terms that in similar studies of the past were neglected, such as the terms involving the inclinations and the Sun’s perturbation. Moreover, we added the tidal dissipation into the equations, in order to investigate how well the model captures the evolution of the system.  相似文献

A numerical theory of the motion of Jupiter’s Galilean satellites was constructed using 3767 absolute observations of the satellites. The theory was based on the numerical integration of the equations of motion of the satellites. The integration was carried out by Everhart’s method using the ERA software package developed at the Institute of Applied Astronomy (IAA). Perturbations due to the oblateness of the central planet, perturbations from Saturn and the Sun, and the mutual attraction of the satellites were taken into account in the integration. As a result, the coefficients of the Chebyshev series expansion for coordinates and velocities were found for the period from 1962 to 2010. The initial coordinates and velocities of the satellites, as well as their masses, the mass of Jupiter, and the harmonic coefficient J 2 of the potential of Jupiter, were adjusted. The resulting ephemerides were compared to those of Lieske and Lainey.  相似文献

The effects of solid and ocean tides have been computed on the right ascension of the ascending node of the two LAGEOS and LARES satellites and on the argument of pericenter of LAGEOS II. Their effects—together with the possible mis-modeling related to systematic errors in the estimate of the tidal coefficients, especially in the case of ocean tides—are quite important to be well established for the key role of the LAGEOS satellites, as well as of the newly LARES, in space geodesy and geophysics as well as in fundamental physics measurements. In the case of the measurement of the Lense–Thirring effect, the mis-modeling of long-period tides may mimic a secular effect on the cited orbital elements, thus producing a degradation in the measurement of the relativistic precession. A suitable combination of the orbital elements of the three satellites can help in avoiding the effects of the long-period tides of degree \(\ell =2\) (as for the Lunar solid tides with periods of 18.6 and 9.3 years) and \(\ell =4\), but other long-period tides, as the ocean \(K_1\) tide, which has the same periodicities of the right ascension of the ascending node \(\varOmega \) of the satellites, may strongly influence the measurement, especially if it is performed over a relatively short time span. These results are particularly important in the case of LARES, since they are new and because of the role that the orbit of LARES, and especially of its ascending node right ascension, will have in a new measurement of the Lense–Thirring effect by the joint analysis of its orbit with that of the two LAGEOS.  相似文献

The results of photographic observations of Jupiter’s Galilean satellites made with the 26-inch refractor at the Pulkovo Observatory from 1986 to 2005 are given. Satellite coordinates with respect to Jupiter and the mutual distances between the satellites have been determined. A scale-trale technique that does not require reference stars for the astrometric reduction of measurements has been used. The effect of the Jupiter phase has been taken into account in the jovicentric coordinates. The observation results have been compared with a modern theory of the Galilean satellites’ motions. Systematic observation errors depending on the observation technique have been studied. The intrinsic observation accuracy in the random quotient is characterized by the values 0.041″ over X and Y. The external accuracy of the relative Galilean satellite coordinates determined by comparing the observations with modern ephemerides turned out to be equal to 0.165″, 0.213″ for the Jovicentric coordinates and 0.134″, 0.170″ for the “satellite-satellite” coordinates. The highest accuracy of the relative satellite coordinates is reached at small distances between the satellites which are less than 100″: the corresponding mean-square errors of one observation are equal in to the external convergence to 0.050″, 0.070″. The results of photographic observations have been compared with the first CCD observations of the Jupiter satellites made in 2004 with the 26-inch refractor.  相似文献

One hundred eighty-seven reflectance spectra (0.33–1.10 μm) of the Galilean satellites have been obtained. Solar phase angle color correction coefficients were derived and the spectra corrected to a solar phase of 6°. Solar phase angle coefficients beyond 0.55 μm are presented for the first time. The spectra as a function of orbital phase angle are presented in the form of images to display hemispheric spectral variations. Io and Europa are redder on their trailing hemispheres while Callisto is redder on its leading hemisphere. Ganymede shows small longitudinal color variations despite the complex albedo structure visible in Voyager images. Comparisons of these data with previous measurements reveal that most differences can be attributed to the solar calibration. Reflectance measurements of Io at 0.73 μm observed 8.5 years apart show a 6% global reflectance decrease. However, it is difficult to unambigously attribute this particular decrease in reflectance to a change in Io's surface composition.  相似文献

Uranus exhibits an unusually large obliquity compared to other planets of the solar system; its equator is inclined by 98° to the plane of its orbit. However its five satellites are remarkably regular, with eccentricities and inclinations very nearly zero, but of course with orbit planes that are tilted by ~98° to the plane of the ecliptic. This circumstance is used here to relate the formation of satellites to planet formation. Six different cases are discussed, of which two can be ruled out and two others are highly improbable. In the analysis, use is made of the fact that satellites in near-equatorial orbits could not follow a rapid (“non-adiabatic”) change of the planet's obliquity. We assume, also, that the observed obliquity is the result of the last stages of planet accumulation. We can therefore exclude contemporaneous formation of planet and satellites, and conclude instead that the satellites were formed or acquired after the planet's axis had been tilted. A plausible scenario involves the tidal capture of a body having 5% to 10% of the planet's mass—sufficient to account for the tilt—followed by its accretion. However, tidal forces break up the body into chunks, slow the accretion, and allow ~1% of the chunks to form the satellites through interaction with a temporary dense atmosphere. The same reasoning may apply also for Saturn and Jupiter. It should be noted that the synchronous orbit it well within the Roche limit for all three planets.  相似文献

It is known that most of the craters on the surface of the Moon were created by the collision of minor bodies of the Solar System. Main Belt Asteroids, which can approach the terrestrial planets as a consequence of different types of resonance, are actually the main responsible for this phenomenon. Our aim is to investigate the impact distributions on the lunar surface that low-energy dynamics can provide. As a first approximation, we exploit the hyberbolic invariant manifolds associated with the central invariant manifold around the equilibrium point L 2 of the Earth–Moon system within the framework of the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. Taking transit trajectories at several energy levels, we look for orbits intersecting the surface of the Moon and we attempt to define a relationship between longitude and latitude of arrival and lunar craters density. Then, we add the gravitational effect of the Sun by considering the Bicircular Restricted Four-Body Problem. In the former case, as main outcome, we observe a more relevant bombardment at the apex of the lunar surface, and a percentage of impact which is almost constant and whose value depends on the assumed Earth–Moon distance dEM. In the latter, it seems that the Earth–Moon and Earth–Moon–Sun relative distances and the initial phase of the Sun θ 0 play a crucial role on the impact distribution. The leading side focusing becomes more and more evident as dEM decreases and there seems to exist values of θ 0 more favorable to produce impacts with the Moon. Moreover, the presence of the Sun makes some trajectories to collide with the Earth. The corresponding quantity floats between 1 and 5 percent. As further exploration, we assume an uniform density of impact on the lunar surface, looking for the regions in the Earth–Moon neighbourhood these colliding trajectories have to come from. It turns out that low-energy ejecta originated from high-energy impacts are also responsible of the phenomenon we are considering.  相似文献

Exploratory experimental impact studies have been performed using “soupy” mud as a target material. Although differing in details, the results appear to support the hypothesis that ejecta deposits around a class of Martian craters recently revealed in high-resolution Viking Orbiter images were emplaced as a flow of fluidized materials.  相似文献

McEwen et al. (McEwen, A.S., Preblich, B.S., Turtle, E.P., Artemieva, N.A., Golombek, M.P., Hurst, M., Kirk, R.L., Burr, D.M., Christensen, P. [2005]. Icarus 176, 351-381) developed a useful test for the internal consistency of crater-count chronometry systems. They argued that certain multi-kilometer, fresh-looking martian craters with prominent rays should be the youngest or near-youngest craters in their size range. The “McEwen et al. test” is that the ages determined from crater densities of the smallest superimposed craters (typically diameter D ∼ 5-20 m) should thus be comparable to the expected formation intervals of the host primary. McEwen et al. concluded from MOC data that crater chronometry failed this test by factors of 700-2000. We apply HiRISE and other imagery to eight different young craters in order to re-evaluate their arguments. We use existing crater chronology systems as well as the reported observed production rate of 16 m craters (Malin, M.C., Edgett, K., Posiolova, L., McColley, S., Noe Dobrea, E. [2006]. Science 314, 1573-1557; Hartmann, W.K., Quantin, C., Mangold, N. [2007]. Icarus 186, 11-23; Kreslavsky [2007]. Seventh International Conference on Mars, 3325). Every case passes the McEwen et al. test. We conclude that the huge inconsistencies suggested by McEwen et al. are spurious. Many of these craters show evidence of impact into ice-rich material, and appear to have ice-flow features and sublimation pits on their floors. As production rate data improve, decameter-scale craters will provide a valuable way of dating these young martian geological formations and the processes that modify them.  相似文献

We review the secondary-crater research over the past decade, and provide new analyses and simulations that are the first to model an accumulation of a combined primary-plus-secondary crater population as discrete cratering events. We develop the secondary populations by using scaling laws to generate ejecta fragments, integrating the trajectories of individual ejecta fragments, noting the location and velocity at impact, and using scaling laws to estimate secondary-crater diameters given the impact conditions. We also explore the relationship between the impactor size–frequency distribution (SFD) and the resulting secondary-crater SFD. Our results from these analyses indicate that the “secondary effect” varies from surface to surface and that no single conclusion applies across the solar system nor at any given moment in time—rather, there is a spectrum of outcomes both spatially and temporally, dependent upon target parameters and the impacting population. Surface gravity and escape speed define the spatial distribution of secondaries. A shallow-sloped impactor SFD will cause proportionally more secondaries than a steeper-sloped SFD. Accounting for the driving factors that define the magnitude and spatial distribution of secondaries is essential to determine the relative population of secondary craters, and their effect on derived surface ages.  相似文献

In 2009, in five Russian observatories photometric observations of Jupiter’s Galilean satellites during their mutual occultations and eclipses were carried out. Based on these observations, an original method was used to ascertain astrometric results such as the difference between the coordinates of pairs of satellites. Fifty-three phenomena were successfully observed. A total of 94 light curves of satellites were measured. The error in the coordinates of satellites due to random errors in photometry, calculated on all data obtained, was 0.041″ in right ascension and 0.046″ in declination. The discrepancies between the theory and observations in these coordinates was found to be 0.060″ and 0.057″, respectively. The results were uploaded to the common database for all observations of natural satellites of planets at the Natural Satellites Data Center (NSDC), which is available online at http://www.sai.msu.ru/neb/nss/index.htm. For the first time in the practice of photometric observations of satellites in epochs of mutual occultations and eclipses a new method of observation was tested, which eliminates from astrometric results the major systematic errors caused by an inaccurate account of the background level. The tests were conducted in the Terskol Observatory and the observatory of the Crimean laboratory of the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University. The application of the new method showed that the elimination of the background level at these observatories was carried out correctly.  相似文献

The contribution of the Babcock-Leighton mechanism to the generation of the Sun’s poloidal magnetic field is estimated from sunspot data for three solar cycles. Comparison of the derived quantities with the A-index of the large-scale magnetic field suggests a positive answer to the question posed in the title of this paper.  相似文献

The influence of active processes on the Sun and their response on the dynamics of Earth’s artificial satellites has been investigated. The relationship between the characteristics of solar activity and variations of the periods P of the orbital motion of Earth’s artificial satellites has been found. These variations mainly indicate the variations in the Earth’s atmosphere density caused by solar activity (index F10.7) and geomagnetic activity (ΣKp index). High values of the correlation coefficients between P and F10.7 (–0.77…–0.91) and between P and ΣKp (–0.67…–0.89) exhibit significant effect of solar and geomagnetic activity on the orbital periods of satellites.  相似文献

Very high resolution Viking Orbiter images (8–17 m per pixel) have been used to investigate the morphology of Martian rampart crater ejecta blankets and the crater interiors, with the objective of identifying the fluidizing medium for the ejecta and the physical properties of the target rock. The occurrence of well-preserved, small-scale pressure ridges and scour marks, evidence for subsidence around isolated buried blocks in partially eroded ejecta lobes, and the stability of crater walls and distal ramparts argue for ground ice being the dominant state for volatiles within the target rocks at the time of impact. Rare examples of channels (190–650 m wide) on the surfaces of ejecta blankets, and on the inner walls of the crater Cerulli, indicate that in some instances liquid water was incorporated into the ejecta during its emplacement. No morphological evidence has been found to discount the idea that atmospheric effects were partially responsible for ejecta fluidization, but it is clear that these effects were not the sole reason for the characteristic lobate deposits surrounding at least some rampart craters on Mars.  相似文献

New near-infrared (0.65–2.5 μm) reflectance spectra of the Galilean satellites with 1.5% spectral resolution and ≈2% intensity precision are presented. These spectra more precisely define the water ice absorption features previously identified on Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto at 1.55 and 2.0 μm. In addition, previously unreported spectral features due to water ice are seen at 1.25, 1.06, 0.90, and 0.81 μm on Europa, and at 1.25, 1.04, and possibly 0.71 μm on Ganymede. Unreported absorption features in Callisto's spectrum occur at 1.2 μm, probably due to H2O, and a weak, broad band extending from 0.75 to 0.95 μm, due possibly to other minerals. The spectrum of Io has only weak absorption features at 1.15 μm and between 0.8 and 1.0 μm. No water absorptions are positively identified in the Io spectra, indicating an upper limit of areal water frost coverage of 2% (leading and trailing sides). It is found for Callisto, Ganymede, and Europa that the water ice absorption features are due to free water and not to water bound or absorbed onto minerals. The areal coverage of water frost is ≈ 100% on Europa (trailing side), ≈65% on Ganymede (leading side), and 20–30% on Callisto (leading side). An upper limit of ≈5% bound water (in addition to the 20–30% ice) may be present on Callisto, based on the strong 3-μm band seen by other investigators. A summary of spectra of the satellites from 0.325 to about 5 μm to aid in laboratory and interpretation studies is also presented.  相似文献

Chang'E-4(CE-4) successfully landed on the floor of the Von Kármán crater within the South Pole-Aitken basin(SPA). One of its scientific objectives is to determine the subsurface structure and the thickness of lunar regolith at the landing site and along the traverse route of the Yutu-2 rover. Using orbital data, we employed small craters(diameters 1 km) on the floor of the Von Kármán crater as probes to investigate the subsurface structure and stratigraphy of the CE-4 landing site. In this study, 40 dark-haloed craters that penetrate through the surface Finsen ejecta and excavate underlying mare deposits were identified, and 77 bright ray craters that expose only the underlying fresh materials but do not penetrate through the surface Finsen ejecta were found. The excavation depths of these craters and their distances from the Finsen crater center were calculated, and the thickness distribution of Finsen ejecta on the Von Kármán floor was systematically investigated. The boundary between Finsen ejecta and underlying mare basalt at the CE-4 landing site is constrained to a depth of 18 m. We have proposed the stratigraphy for the CE-4 site and interpreted the origins of different layers and the geological history of the Von Kármán crater. These results provide valuable geological background for interpreting data from the Lunar Penetrating Radar(LPR)and Visible and Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer(VNIS) on the Yutu-2 rover. The CE-4 landing site could provide a reference point for crater ejecta distribution and mixing with local materials, to test and improve ejecta thickness models according to the in situ measurements of the CE-4 LPR.  相似文献

The thermal histories of two geologically active satellites of Saturn—Titan and Enceladus—are discussed. During the Cassini mission, it was found that there are both nitrogen-containing compounds—NH3 and N2-and CO2 and CH4 in the water plumes of Enceladus; at that, ammonia is the prevailing form. This may testify that during evolution, the material of the satellite was warmed up to T ∼ 500–600 K, when NH3 (the form of nitrogen capable of being accreted) could only be partly converted into N2. Contrary to Enceladus, the temperature inside Titan probably reached values higher than 800 K or even higher than 1000 K, since the process of the chemical dissociation of ammonia was completely finished on this satellite and its atmosphere contains only molecular nitrogen. While the internal heating of Titan up to high temperatures can be explained by its large mass, the heating source for Enceladus’ interior is far from evident. Such traditional heating sources as the energy of gravitational differentiation and the radiogenic heating due to shortliving 26Al and 60Fe could not be effective. The first one is because of the small size of Enceladus (RE ≈ 250 km), and the inefficiency of the second one is caused by the fact that the satellite was formed not earlier than 8–10 Myr after the formation of calcium and aluminum-enriched inclusions in carbonaceous chondrites (CAI), i.e., after 26Al had completely decayed. In the present paper, we propose other heating mechanisms-the heat of long-living radioactive elements and tidal heat, which could provide the observed chemical composition of the water plumes of Enceladus rather than only the differentiation of its protomatter into the ironstone core and the ice mantle.  相似文献

Observational results are presented for Jupiter and its Galilean moons from the Normal Astrograph at Pulkovo Observatory in 2013–2015. The following data are obtained: 154 positions of the Galilean satellites and 47 calculated positions of Jupiter in the system of the UCAC4 (ICRS, J2000.0) catalogue; the differential coordinates of the satellites relative to one another are determined. The mean errors of the satellites’ normal places in right ascension and declination over the entire observational period are, respectively: εα = 0.0065″ and εδ = 0.0068″, and their standard deviations are σα = 0.0804″ and σδ = 0.0845″. The equatorial coordinates are compared with planetary and satellite motion theories. The average (O–C) residuals in the two coordinates relative to the motion theories are 0.05″ or less. The best agreement with the observations is achieved by a combination of the EPM2011m and V. Lainey-V.2.0|V1.1 motion theories; the average (O–C) residuals are 0.03″ or less. The (O–C) residuals for the features of the positions of Io and Ganymede are comparable with measurement errors. Jupiter’s positions calculated from the observations of the satellites and their theoretical jovicentric coordinates are in good agreement with the motion theories. The (О–С) residuals for Jupiter’s coordinates are, on average, 0.027″ and–0.025″ in the two coordinates.  相似文献

We present the results of observations of the Galilean moons of Jupiter carried out at the Normal Astrograph of the Pulkovo Observatory in 2016?2017. We obtained 761 positions of the Galilean moons of Jupiter in the system of the Gaia DR1 catalog (ICRF, J2000.0) and 854 differential coordinates of the satellites relative to each other. The mean errors in the satellites’ normal places and the corresponding root-mean-square deviations are εα = 0.0020′′, εδ = 0.0027′′, σα = 0.0546′′, and σδ = 0.0757′′. The equatorial coordinates of the moons are compared to the motion theories of planets and satellites. On average, the (O–C) residuals in the both coordinates relative to the motion theories are less than 0.031′′. The best agreement with observations is achieved by a combination of the EPM2015 and V. Lainey-V.2.0|V1.1 motion theories, which yields the average (O–C) residuals of approximately 0.02″. Peculiarities in the behavior of the (O–C) residuals and error values in Ganymede have been noticed.  相似文献
