Goethite (Ax-2) from Axel Heiberg Island (∼80°N) on the margin of the Arctic Ocean is the dominant mineral in a sample of “petrified” Eocene wood, but U, Th, and He measurements suggest that the goethite (α-FeOOH) crystallized in the latest Miocene/Pliocene (ca. 5.5 to 2.8 Ma). Measured δD and δ18O values of Ax-2 are −221 (±6)‰ and −9.6 (±0.5)‰, respectively. The inferred δD and δ18O values of the ancient water were about −139‰ and −18.6‰, respectively, with a calculated temperature of crystallization of 3 (±5)°C, which compares with the modern summer (J-J-A) temperature of 3 °C and contrasts with a modern MAT of −19 °C. Published results from various biological proxies on nearby Ellesmere Island indicate a Pliocene (∼4 Ma) MAT of either −6 or −0.4 °C and corresponding seasonal amplitudes of about 18 or 13 °C. A conductive heat flow model suggests that a temperature of 3 °C could represent goethite crystallization at depths of ∼100-200 cm (for MAT = −6 °C) or ∼250-450 cm (for MAT = −0.4 °C) over seasonally restricted intervals of time. The δ18O value of the Ax-2 water (−18.6‰) is more positive than the modern J-J-A precipitation (−22‰). In combination, the paleotemperatures and δ18O values of ancient waters (from Ax-2 and published results from three Eocene or Pliocene proxy sites on Axel Heiberg and Ellesmere Islands) are consistent with a warm season bias in those isotopic proxies. The results are also consistent with higher proportions of J-J-A precipitation in the annual total. If so, this emphasizes the importance of seasonality at high latitudes even in times of warmer global climates, and suggests that the Arctic hydrologic cycle, as expressed in the seasonal distribution and isotopic composition of precipitation (perhaps modified by a warmer Arctic Ocean), differed from modern. The δ13C value of the Fe(CO3)OH component in the Ax-2 goethite is +6.6‰, which is much more positive than expected if crystallizing goethite incorporated CO2 derived primarily from oxidation of relict Eocene wood with δ13C values of about −24‰. This apparent paradox may be resolved if the goethite is a product of oxidation of 13C-rich siderite, which had previously replaced wood in an Eocene methanogenic burial environment. Thus, the goethite retains a carbon isotope “memory” of a diagenetic Eocene event, but a δD and δ18O record of the latest Miocene/Pliocene Arctic climate.  相似文献

A detailed oxygen isotope study of detrital quartz and authigenic quartz overgrowths from shallowly buried (<1 km) quartz arenites of the St. Peter Sandstone (in SW Wisconsin) constrains temperature and fluid sources during diagenesis. Quartz overgrowths are syntaxial (optically continuous) and show complex luminescent zonation by cathodoluminescence. Detrital quartz grains were separated from 53 rocks and analyzed for oxygen isotope ratio by laser fluorination, resulting in an average δ18O of 10.0 ± 0.2‰ (1SD, n = 109). Twelve thin sections were analyzed by CAMECA-1280 ion microprobe (6-10 μm spot size, analytical precision better than ±0.2‰, 1SD). Detrital quartz grains have an average δ18O of 10.0 ± 1.4‰ (1SD, n = 91) identical to the data obtained by laser fluorination. The ion microprobe data reveal true variability that is otherwise lost by homogenization of powdered samples necessary for laser fluorination. Laser fluorination uses samples that are one million times larger than the ion microprobe. Whole rock (WR) samples from the 53 rocks were analyzed by laser fluorination, giving δ18O between 9.8‰ and 16.7‰ (n = 110). Quartz overgrowths in thin sections from 10 rocks were analyzed by ion microprobe and average δ18O = 29.3 ± 1.0‰ (1SD, n = 161).Given the similarity, on average, of δ18O for all detrital quartz grains and for all quartz overgrowths, samples with higher δ18O(WR) values can be shown to have more cement. The quartz cement in the 53 rocks, calculated by mass balance, varies from <1 to 21 vol.% cement, with one outlier at 33 vol.% cement. Eolian samples have an average of 11% cement compared to marine samples, which average 4% cement. Two models for quartz cementation have been investigated: high temperature (50-110 °C) formation from ore-forming brines related to Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) mineralization and formation as silcretes at low temperature (10-30 °C). The homogeneity of δ18O for quartz overgrowths determined by ion microprobe rules out a systematic regional variation of temperature as predicted for MVT brines and there are no other known heating events in these sediments that were never buried to depths >1 km. The data in this study suggest that quartz overgrowths formed as silcretes in the St. Peter Sandstone from meteoric water with δ18O values of −10‰ to −5‰ at 10-30 °C. This interpretation runs counter to conventional wisdom based on fibrous or opaline silica cements suggesting that the formation of syntaxial quartz overgrowths requires higher temperatures. While metastable silica cements commonly form at high degrees of silica oversaturation following rapid break-down reactions of materials such as of feldspars or glass, the weathering of a clean quartz arenite is slower facilitating chemical equilibrium and precipitation of crystallographically oriented overgrowths of α-quartz.  相似文献

Carbon isotope fractionation in wood during carbonization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A significant uncertainty exists as to whether δ13C values in charcoal meaningfully represent the stable isotopic content of the original material, with studies suggesting variable responses to both natural and laboratory heating. An extensive study was undertaken using fully homogenised samples of wood taken from Eucalyptus spp., Quercus robur and Pinus radiata. The results demonstrate that the duration of heating had no tangible effect on the final composition of the charred material, with the δ13C and carbon content of wood fixed after 30 min of heating. Furthermore, all three wood types become progressively depleted in 13C with increasing temperature. The results demonstrate that even at temperatures commonly reached in natural fires (<450 °C) isotopic fractionation of up to 1.3‰ can take place indicating that the absolute values obtained from charcoal extracted for paleoenvironmental reconstruction must be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

Pollen grains from grasses using the C3 and C4 photosynthetic pathways have distinct ranges of δ13C values that may be used to estimate their relative abundance in paleorecords. We evaluated a spooling-wire microcombustion device interfaced with an isotope-ratio mass spectrometer (SWiM-IRMS) for δ13C analysis of individual grass-pollen grains. Pollen from four C3 and four C4 grass species was isolated through micromanipulation and analyzed as single grains suspended in water. A carbon yield greater than the 2σ range of the carbon content of blanks containing only water was used to distinguish samples containing pollen (“pollen present”) from those not containing pollen. This criterion resulted in the exclusion of ∼45% of the 946 samples applied to the wire. The average δ13C values (±1σ) of the remaining samples were −26.9‰ (±6.3‰) and −11.5‰ (±9.6‰) for C3 grasses and C4 grasses, respectively, after blank-correcting the δ13C data. These results suggest that the SWiM-IRMS system can be used to distinguish C3 from C4 grass pollen. The high variability in measured δ13C values is likely caused by a combination of factors. These include natural isotopic variability among individual pollen grains; the relatively poor precision that can be obtained when determining δ13C values of such small samples; and the uncertainty in the magnitude, isotopic composition, and stability of the analytical blank. Nonetheless, high percentages of individual pollen grains were correctly classified as being of either C3 or C4 origin. On average, 90% (range = 78-100%) of pollen grains from C3 grasses had δ13C values more negative than the cutoff threshold of −19.2‰; while 84% (range = 77-90%) of pollen grains from C4 grasses had δ13C values more positive than −19.2‰. Compared with analysis using an elemental analyzer interfaced with an IRMS (EA-IRMS), the number of pollen grains required for δ13C-based evaluation of C3/C4 grass composition is many times lower with the SWiM-IRMS. Additionally, δ13C data from the SWiM-IRMS does not need to be incorporated into a mixing model to derive estimates of the abundance of C3 and C4 grass pollen. Carbon-isotopic analysis of individual grass-pollen grains using the SWiM-IRMS system may help improve our understanding of the evolutionary and ecological significance of grass taxa in the paleorecord.  相似文献

A unique dataset from paired low- and high-temperature vents at 9°50′N East Pacific Rise provides insight into the microbiological activity in low-temperature diffuse fluids. The stable carbon isotopic composition of CH4 and CO2 in 9°50′N hydrothermal fluids indicates microbial methane production, perhaps coupled with microbial methane consumption. Diffuse fluids are depleted in 13C by ∼10‰ in values of δ13C of CH4, and by ∼0.55‰ in values of δ13C of CO2, relative to the values of the high-temperature source fluid (δ13C of CH4 =−20.1 ± 1.2‰, δ13C of CO2 =−4.08 ± 0.15‰). Mixing of seawater or thermogenic sources cannot account for the depletions in 13C of both CH4 and CO2 at diffuse vents relative to adjacent high-temperature vents. The substrate utilization and 13C fractionation associated with the microbiological processes of methanogenesis and methane oxidation can explain observed steady-state CH4 and CO2 concentrations and carbon isotopic compositions. A mass-isotope numerical box model of these paired vent systems is consistent with the hypothesis that microbial methane cycling is active at diffuse vents at 9°50′N. The detectable 13C modification of fluid geochemistry by microbial metabolisms may provide a useful tool for detecting active methanogenesis.  相似文献

Active and inactive carbonate chimneys from the Lost City Hydrothermal Field contain up to 0.6% organic carbon with diverse lipid assemblages. The δ13C values of total organic carbon range from −21.5‰ vs. VPDB at an extinct carbonate chimney to −2.8‰ at a 70 °C, actively venting carbonate chimney. Samples collected at locations with total organic carbon with δ13C > −15‰ also contained high abundances of isoprenoidal and nonisoprenoidal diether lipids. Samples with TOC more depleted in 13C lacked or contained lower amounts of these diethers.Isoprenoidal diethers, including sn-2 hydroxyarchaeol, sn-3 hydroxyarchaeol, and putative dihydroxyarchaeol, are likely to derive from methanogenic archaea. These compounds have δ13C values ranging from −2.9 to +6.7‰ vs. VPDB. Nonisoprenoidal diethers and monoethers are presumably derived from bacteria, and have structures similar to those produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria in culture and at cold seeps. In samples that also contained abundant hydroxyarchaeols, these diethers have δ13C values between −11.8 and +3.6‰. In samples without abundant hydroxyarchaeols, the nonisoprenoidal diethers were typically more depleted in 13C, with δ13C as low as −28.7‰ in chimneys and −45‰ in fissures. The diethers at Lost City are probably derived from hydrogen-consuming methanogens and bacteria. High hydrogen concentrations favor methanogenesis over methanotrophy and allow the concurrent growth of methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria. The unusual enrichment of 13C in lipids can be attributed to nearly complete consumption of bioavailable carbon in vent fluids. Under carbon-limited conditions, the isotope effects that usually lead to 13C-depletion in organic material cannot be expressed. Consequently, metabolic products such as lipids and methane have δ13C values typical of abiotic carbon.  相似文献

Here we calibrate the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer in modern deep-sea corals. We examined 11 specimens of three species of deep-sea corals and one species of a surface coral spanning a total range in growth temperature of 2-25 °C. External standard errors for individual measurements ranged from 0.005‰ to 0.011‰ (average: 0.0074‰) which corresponds to ∼1-2 °C. External standard errors for replicate measurements of Δ47 in corals ranged from 0.002‰ to 0.014‰ (average: 0.0072‰) which corresponds to 0.4-2.8 °C. We find that skeletal carbonate from deep-sea corals shows the same relationship of Δ47 (the measure of 13C-18O ordering) to temperature as does inorganic calcite. In contrast, the δ13 C and δ18O values of these carbonates (measured simultaneously with Δ47 for every sample) differ markedly from equilibrium with seawater; i.e., these samples exhibit pronounced ‘vital effects’ in their bulk isotopic compositions. We explore several reasons why the clumped isotope compositions of deep-sea coral skeletons exhibit no evidence of a vital effect despite having large conventional isotopic vital effects.  相似文献

The Western Slope of the Songliao Basin is rich in heavy oil resources (>70 × 108 bbl), around which there are shallow gas reservoirs (∼1.0 × 1012 m3). The gas is dominated by methane with a dryness over 0.99, and the non-hydrocarbon component being overwelmingly nitrogen. Carbon isotope composition of methane and its homologs is depleted in 13C, with δ13C1 values being in the range of −55‰ to −75‰, δ13C2 being in the range of −40‰ to −53‰ and δ13C3 being in the range of −30‰ to −42‰, respectively. These values differ significantly from those solution gases source in the Daqing oilfield. This study concludes that heavy oils along the Western Slope were derived from mature source rocks in the Qijia-Gulong Depression, that were biodegraded. The low reservoir temperature (30–50 °C) and low salinity of formation water with neutral to alkaline pH (NaHCO3) appeared ideal for microbial activity and thus biodegradation. Natural gas along the Western Slope appears mainly to have originated from biodegradation and the formation of heavy oil. This origin is suggested by the heavy δ13C of CO2 (−18.78‰ to 0.95‰) which suggests that the methane was produced via fermentation as the terminal decomposition stage of the oil.  相似文献

Nineteen samples of metamorphosed carbonate-bearing rocks were analyzed for carbon and oxygen isotope ratios by ion microprobe with a ∼5-15 μm spot, three from a regional terrain and 16 from five different contact aureoles. Contact metamorphic rocks further represent four groups: calc-silicate marble and hornfels (6), brucite marble (2), samples that contain a reaction front (4), and samples with a pervasive distribution of reactants and products of a decarbonation reaction (4). The average spot-to-spot reproducibility of standard calcite analyses is ±0.37‰ (2 standard deviations, SD) for δ18O and ±0.71‰ for δ13C. Ten or more measurements of a mineral in a sample that has uniform isotope composition within error of measurement can routinely return a weighted mean with a 95% confidence interval of 0.09-0.16‰ for δ18O and 0.10-0.29‰ for δ13C. Using a difference of >6SD as the criterion, only four of 19 analyzed samples exhibit significant intracrystalline and/or intercrystalline inhomogeneity in δ13C at the 100-500 μm scale, with differences within individual grains up to 3.7‰. Measurements are consistent with carbon isotope exchange equilibrium between calcite and dolomite in five of six analyzed samples at the same scale. Because of relatively slow carbon isotope diffusion in calcite and dolomite, differences in δ13C can survive intracrystalline homogenization by diffusion during cooling after peak metamorphism and likely represent the effects of prograde decarbonation and infiltration. All but 2 of 11 analyzed samples exhibit intracrystalline differences in δ18O (up to 9.4‰), intercrystalline inhomogeneity in δ18O (up to 12.5‰), and/or disequilibrium oxygen isotope fractionations among calcite-dolomite, calcite-quartz, and calcite-forsterite pairs at the 100-500 μm scale. Inhomogeneities in δ18O and δ13C are poorly correlated with only a single mineral (dolomite) in a single sample exhibiting both. Because of relatively rapid oxygen isotope diffusion in calcite, intracrystalline inhomogeneities in δ18O likely represent partial equilibration between calcite and fluid during retrograde metamorphism. Calcite is in oxygen isotope exchange equilibrium with forsterite in one of four analyzed samples, in equilibrium with dolomite in none of six analyzed samples, and in equilibrium with quartz in neither of two analyzed samples. There are no samples of contact metamorphic rock with analyzed reactants and products of an arrested metamorphic reaction that are in oxygen isotope equilibrium with each other. The degree of departure from equilibrium in analyzed samples is variable and is often related, at least in part, to alteration of δ18O of calcite during retrograde fluid-rock reaction. In situ sub-grain-scale carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of minerals are advisable in the common applications of stable isotope geochemistry to metamorphic petrology. Correlation of sub-mm scale stable isotope data with imaging will lead to improved understanding of reaction kinetics, reactive fluid flow, and thermal histories during metamorphism.  相似文献

Aqueous alteration of primitive meteorites was among the earliest geological processes during the evolution of our solar system. ‘Clumped-isotope’ thermometry of carbonates in the CM chondrites, Cold Bokkeveld, Murray, and Murchison, demonstrates that they underwent aqueous alteration at 20-71 °C from a fluid with δ18OVSMOW of 2.0‰ to 8.1‰ and δ17OVSMOW of −0.1‰ to 3.0‰. The δ13CVPDB values of these carbonates exhibit a negative correlation with the δ18OVSMOW of their formation waters, consistent with formation and escape of 13C-depleted CH4 during aqueous alteration. Methane generation under these conditions implies that the alteration fluid was characterized by an Eh ? −0.67 and pH ? 12.5 (or lower at the highest alteration temperatures). Our findings suggest that methane generation may have been a widespread consequence of planetesimal and planetary aqueous alteration, perhaps explaining the occurrence of methane on Titan, Triton, Pluto, and other Kuiper-belt objects.  相似文献

Unraveling the factors controlling the carbon chemistry and transport of carbon within extant karst systems has important implications concerning the assessment of time-series δ13C records of speleothems. Here we report the results of a 3-year study of total dissolved inorganic carbon [DIC] and δ13CDIC from cave waters at DeSoto Caverns (Southeastern USA) that offer valuable insight on carbon transport and the accompanied isotope fractionations from end-member sources to speleothems.[DIC] and δ13CDIC values of cave waters range from 0.2 to 6.0 mM and 2.7 to −12.9 (‰ VPDB), respectively. [DIC] and δ13CDIC of “seasonal drips” show seasonal, albeit noisy, variability and are inversely related (δ13CDIC = −2.49[DIC] + 0.64, r2 = 0.84). A shallow pool fed by multiple drips shows a bimodal δ13CDIC distribution with an isotopically heavier mode during winter (−4‰ to −5‰ VPDB) relative to summer months (−9‰ to −10‰ VPDB). A multi-year trend of decreasing water availability during the study period is not reflected in a response of cave water carbon chemistry suggesting that rainfall amount may not be a significant controlling factor of the carbon chemistry. Coupled cave air winter ventilation/summer stagnation and varying CO2 fluxes through the soil horizon and epikarst exert the strongest influence on seasonal [DIC] and δ13CDIC variability. Measured values of high [DIC] and low δ13CDIC from cave waters collected during the summer/early fall closely approximate isotopic equilibrium conditions. Conversely, low [DIC] and high δ13CDIC values during winter/early months indicate kinetically enhanced isotopic fractionations within the cave waters. The kinetically enhanced isotopic fractionation of partitioned between degassed CO2 and precipitated CaCO3(1000lnα[(CO2-HCO3)+(CaCO3(AR)-HCO3)]/2) is greater by about a factor of two (−6.7 ± 0.3‰) relative to the same isotopic fractionation under equilibrium conditions (−3.1‰).On the basis of 14C mass balance and paired 14C-U/Th measurements we estimate that on average about ∼23% of C delivered annually by the drips to the aragonite stalagmites is derived from 14C-dead dolomite cap while the remainder of ∼77% is derived from 14C-live biomass. δ13C measurements of aragonite (n = 12) sampled from the tips of active speleothems during the summer months are consistent with theoretical aragonite δ13C values calculated using the shallow pool summer/early fall data thus confirming the δ13C seasonality in both drips and coeval aragonite. δ13C values of an active stalagmite section spanning the last 200 years show a normal distribution with a mean of −7.1 ± 1.2‰ (n = 81) and a mode of −7‰ to −8‰ that are statistically indistinguishable from the annual mean and mode of all dripwaters. Thus secular time-series δ13C records of stalagmites at DeSoto Caverns with resolving power >10−1 year will likely carry the imprints of drip annual means that record climate-driven δ13C seasonal biases.  相似文献

Nitrogen and carbon isotopic compositions, together with mineralogy and trace element geochemistry, were studied in a few kerogen-rich Paleoarchean cherts, a barite and a dolomitic stromatolite belonging to the eastern (Dixon Island Formation) and western (Dresser and Strelley Pool Chert Formations; North Pole Dome and Marble Bar) terranes of Pilbara Craton, Western Australia. The aim of the study was to search for 15N-depleted isotopic signatures, often found in kerogens of this period, and explain the origin of these anomalies. Trace elements suggest silica precipitation by hydrothermal fluids as the main process of chert formation with a contamination from volcanoclastic detritus. This is supported by the occurrence of hydrothermal-derived minerals in the studied samples indicating precipitation temperatures up to 350 °C. Only a dolomitic stromatolite from Strelley Pool shows a superchondritic Y/Ho ratio of 72 and a positive Eu/Eu* anomaly of 1.8, characteristic of chemical precipitates from the Archean seawater. The bulk δ13C vs. δ15N values measured in the cherts show a roughly positive co-variation, except for one sample from the North Pole (PI-85-00). The progressive enrichment in 15N and 13C from a pristine source having δ13C ? −36‰ and δ15N ? −4‰ is correlated with a progressive depletion in N content and to variations in Ba/La and Co/As ratios. These trends have been interpreted as a progressive hydrothermal alteration of the cherts by metamorphic fluids. Isotopic exchange at 350 °C between NH4+(rock) and N2(fluid) may explain the isotopic and elemental composition of N in the studied cherts. However, we need to assume isotopic exchange at 350 °C between carbonate C and graphite to explain the large 13C enrichment recorded. Only sample PI-85-00 shows a large N loss (90%) with a positive δ15N value (+11‰), while C (up to 120 ppm and δ13C −38‰) seems to be unaffected. This pattern has been interpreted as the result of devolatilization and alteration (oxidation) of graphite by low-temperature fluids. The 15N-13C-depleted pristine source has δ 15N values from −7‰ to −4‰ and 40Ar/36Ar ratios from 30,000 to 60,000, compatible with an inorganic mantle N source, although the elemental abundance ratios N/C and 40Ar/C are not exactly the same with the mantle source. The component alternatively could be explained by elemental fractionation from metabolic activity of chemolithoautotrophs and methanogens at the proximity to the hydrothermal vents. However, ambiguities between mantle vs organic sources of N subsist and need further experimental work to be fully elucidated.  相似文献

The well-studied Paleozoic Cooma metamorphic complex in southeastern Australia is characterized by a uniform siliciclastic protolith, of uniform age, with a continuous range of metamorphic grade from subgreenschist- to upper amphibolite-facies, and migmatite-grade in an annular pattern around the Cooma granodiorite. Those conditions are optimal for investigating variations of N concentrations and δ15N values during progressive metamorphism. Nitrogen concentrations decrease and δ15N increases with increasing metamorphic grade (sub-chlorite zone: 120 ppm N, δ15N = 2.3‰; chlorite zone: 110 ppm N, δ15N = 3.0‰; biotite and andalusite zone: 85 ppm N, δ15N = 3.8 ‰; sillimanite and migmatite zones: 40 ppm N, δ15N = 10.7‰). Covariation of K and N contents is consistent with N substituting for K as NH4+ in micas. Observed trends of increasing δ15N values with decreasing nitrogen concentrations can be explained by a continuous release of nitrogen depleted in 15N with progressive metamorphism, which causes an enrichment of 15N in the residual nitrogen of the rock. Equilibrium models for Rayleigh distillation and batch volatilisation for data of the greenschist and amphibolite facies metasedimentary rocks can be explained by N2-NH4+ exchange at temperatures of 300-600 °C, whereas observed large fractionations for the upper amphibolite-facies and melt products in the migmatite-grade samples may be interpreted as NH3-NH4+ exchanges at temperature of 650-730 °C. Lower values in the highest grade zones may also stem in part from input of 15N-depleted fluids from the granodiorite. The magnitude of isotope fractionation of nitrogen is about 1-2‰ during progressive metamorphism of metasedimentary rocks from sub-chlorite zone to biotite-andalusite zone, which is consistent with previous studies. Consequently, the large spread of δ15N values in Archean greenschist-facies metasedimentary rocks of −6‰ to 30‰ can be accounted for by variable mixtures of mantle plume-dominated volatiles with a δ15N of −5‰, and a 15N-enriched marine sedimentary kerogen component inherited from a CI chondrite veneer having δ15N of 30‰ to 42‰.  相似文献

Sixteen groundwater samples collected from production wells tapping Lower Cretaceous Nubian Sandstone and fractured basement aquifers in Sinai were analyzed for their stable isotopic compositions, dissolved noble gas concentrations (recharge temperatures), tritium activities, and 14C abundances. Results define two groups of samples: Group I has older ages, lower recharge temperatures, and depleted isotopic compositions (adjusted 14C model age: 24,000–31,000 yr BP; δ18O: − 9.59‰ to − 6.53‰; δ2H: − 72.9‰ to − 42.9‰; < 1 TU; and recharge T: 17.5–22.0°C) compared to Group II (adjusted 14C model age: 700–4700 yr BP; δ18O: − 5.89‰ to − 4.84‰; δ2H: − 34.5‰ to − 24.1‰; < 1 to 2.78 TU; and recharge T: 20.6–26.2°C). Group II samples have isotopic compositions similar to those of average modern rainfall, with larger d-excess values than Group I waters, and locally measurable tritium activity (up to 2.8 TU). These observations are consistent with (1) the Nubian Aquifer being largely recharged prior to and/or during the Last Glacial Maximum (represented by Group I), possibly through the intensification of paleowesterlies; and (2) continued sporadic recharge during the relatively dry and warmer interglacial period (represented by Group II) under conditions similar to those of the present.  相似文献

Kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz are the dominant minerals in samples collected from two outcrops of a Cenomanian (∼95 Ma) laterite in southwestern Minnesota. A combination of measured yields and isotope ratios permitted mass balance calculations of the δD and δ18O values of the kaolinite in these samples. These calculations yielded kaolinite δD values of about −73‰ and δ18O values of about +18.7‰. The δD and δ18O values appear to preserve information on the ancient weathering system. If formed in hydrogen and oxygen isotope equilibrium with water characterized by the global meteoric water line (GMWL), the kaolinite δD and δ18O values indicate a crystallization temperature of 22 (±5) °C. A nominal paleotemperature of 22 °C implies a δ18O value for the corresponding water of −6.3‰. The combination of temperature and meteoric water δ18O values is consistent with relatively intense rainfall at that mid-paleolatitude location (∼40°N) on the eastern shore of the North American Western Interior Seaway. The inferred Cenomanian paleosol temperature of ∼22 °C is in general accord with published mid-Cretaceous continental mean annual temperatures (MAT) estimated from leaf margin analyses of fossil plants. When compared with results from a published GCM-based Cenomanian climate simulation which specifies a latitudinal sea surface temperature (SST) gradient that was either near modern or smaller-than-modern, the kaolinite paleotemperature of 22 °C is closer to the GCM-predicted MAT for a smaller equator-to-pole temperature difference in the mid-Cretaceous. Moreover, the warm, kaolinite-derived, mid-paleolatitude temperature of 22 °C is associated with proxy estimates of high concentrations of atmospheric CO2 in the Cenomanian. The overall similarity of proxy and model results suggests that the general features of Cenomanian continental climate in that North American locale are probably being revealed.  相似文献

Diamonds from high- and low-MgO groups of eclogite xenoliths from the Jericho kimberlite, Slave Craton, Canada were analyzed for carbon isotope compositions and nitrogen contents. Diamonds extracted from the two groups show remarkably different nitrogen abundances and δ13C values. While diamonds from high-MgO eclogites have low nitrogen contents (5-82 ppm) and extremely low δ13C values clustering at ∼−40‰, diamonds from the low-MgO eclogites have high nitrogen contents (>1200 ppm) and δ13C values from −3.5‰ to −5.3‰.Coupled cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and SIMS analysis of the Jericho diamonds provides insight into diamond growth processes. Diamonds from the high-MgO eclogites display little CL structure and generally have constant δ13C values and nitrogen contents. Some of these diamonds have secondary rims with increasing δ13C values from −40‰ to ∼−34‰, which suggests secondary diamond growth occurred from an oxidized growth medium. The extreme negative δ13C values of the high-MgO eclogite diamonds cannot be produced by Rayleigh isotopic fractionation of average mantle-derived carbon (−5‰) or carbon derived from typical organic matter (∼−25‰). However, excursions in δ13C values to −60‰ are known in the organic sedimentary record at ca. 2.7 and 2.0 Ga, such that diamonds from the high-MgO eclogites could have formed from similar organic matter brought into the Slave lithospheric mantle by subduction.SIMS analyses of a diamond from a low-MgO eclogite show an outer core with systematic rimwards increases in δ13C values coupled with decreases in nitrogen contents, and a rim with pronounced alternating growth zones. The coupled δ13C-nitrogen data suggest that the diamond precipitated during fractional crystallization from an oxidized fluid/melt from which nitrogen was progressively depleted during growth. Model calculations of the co-variation of δ13C-N yielded a partition coefficient (KN) value of 5, indicating that nitrogen is strongly compatible in diamond relative to the growth medium. δ13C values of diamond cores (−4‰) dictate the growth medium had higher δ13C values than primary mantle-derived carbon. Therefore, possible carbon sources for the low-MgO eclogite diamonds include oxidized mantle-derived (e.g. protokimberlite or carbonatite) fluids/melts that underwent some fractionation during migration or, devolatilized subducted carbonates.  相似文献

Silica phytoliths, which are deposits of opal-A that precipitate in the intra- and intercellular spaces of plant tissues during transpiration, commonly contain small amounts of occluded organic matter. In this paper, we investigate whether the δ13C values of phytoliths from a C4 grass, Calamovilfa longifolia, vary in response to climatic variables that can affect the carbon-isotope composition of plant tissues. There is no significant correlation (r2 < 0.3) between climate variables and the δ13C values of C. longifolia tissues (average δ13Ctissue = −13.1 ± 0.6 ‰; n = 70) across the North American prairies. However, plant tissue δ13C values are lower for grasses collected in populated areas where the δ13C value of atmospheric CO2 is expected to be lower because of fossil fuel burning. Phytolith δ13C values are more variable (δ13C = −27.3 to −23.0‰; average = −25.1 ± 1.3‰; n = 34) and more sensitive to changes in aridity than whole tissue δ13C values. The strongest correlations are obtained between the δ13C values of stem or sheath phytoliths and humidity (r2 = 0.3), latitude (r2 = 0.4) and amount of precipitation (r2 = 0.5). However, use of these relationships is limited by the wide spread in δ13C values of phytoliths from different plant tissues at the same location. We have been unable to infer any relationship between δ13C values of phytoliths and expected variations in the δ13C values of atmospheric CO2. The C. longifolia phytoliths are depleted of 13C relative to tissue carbon by 10-14‰. This means that the phytoliths examined in this study have carbon isotopic compositions within the range reported previously for phytoliths from C3 plants. This observation may further limit the usefulness of soil-phytolith assemblage δ13C values for identifying shifts in grassland C3:C4 ratios.

An Early Eocene Oxisol in the Ione Formation of California formed in a coastal continental weathering environment at a paleolatitude of ∼38°N. The dominant minerals in the Oxisol are goethite, quartz, and kaolinite. Material balance calculations were applied to new measurements of chemical composition, D/H, and 18O/16O ratios of Oxisol samples to determine the δD (−150 ± 3‰) and δ18O (−2.4 ± 0.3‰) values of the goethite (α-FeOOH). These data, in combination with the global meteoric water line (MWL), yielded an isotopic temperature of 21(±4) °C. The nominal value of 21 °C contrasts with the modern mean annual temperature (MAT) of 16 °C in that area. The warmer temperature is consistent with formation of the goethite during the Early Eocene climatic optimum. The isotopic composition of the goethite and a temperature of 21 °C imply ancient water with a δD value of −61(±4)‰ and a δ18O value of −8.9(±0.5)‰. This Early Eocene δ18O (or δD) value is more negative than values in the range of isotopic scatter observed for modern global precipitation at sites with a MAT of 21 °C.At times of warm global climates, the location of a near-surface atmospheric isotherm would generally shift relative to its location under modern climatic conditions. A simple Rayleigh-type condensation model indicates that, if one “follows the isotherm”, the associated scatter in δD and δ18O of precipitation in very warm global climates should shift (for a given isotherm) to more negative values that may be detectable in proxy records. The isotopic results from the goethite of the Early Eocene Oxisol appear to add to evidence in support of this idea.  相似文献
