We describe an indirect or “passive” SETI in 25 globular clusters, observed for astronomical reasons at the water and hydroxyl lines. No beacon signals were found in a sample of up to 107 stars and upper limits to the maximum EIRPs of beacons were 1016–1021W. Ways of enhancing the value of other astronomical spectral line observing programs for SETI purposes are discussed.  相似文献

The catalogue of positions and stellar V magnitudes of up to 17 m stars in the declination zone from 2° to 5.5° has been compiled. The catalogue includes 2.05 × 106 stars and is based on the observations performed in 2010–2015 on the meridian axial circle (MAC) of GAO NAN Ukraine and the Astronomical Observatory of Taras Shevchenko National University. The errors of the positions and photometry for stars of 11–14 magnitude are 0.06″–0.08″ and 0.04 m –0.08 m , respectively.  相似文献

An investigation of the stability of the transfer function of the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope Interferometer has been carried out through observations of Fomalhaut, which was observed over a range in hour angle from 21:50–05:24 on 20 October 2002. No significant variation in the transfer function was found for the zenith angle range 5°–70°. The projected baseline varied between 139.7 m and 49.8 m during the observations and, as an integral part of the determination of the transfer function, a new accurate limb‐darkened angular diameter for Fomalhaut of 2.109 ± 0.013 mas has been established. This has led to improved values for the emergent flux = (3.43 ± 0.10)×108 Wm−2, effective temperature = 8819 ± 67 K and radius = (1.213 ± 0.011)×109 m (R/R = 1.744 ± 0.016). An array spectrometer was used on the nights of 1985 May 30–June 1 to observe the disks of Uranus and Neptune in the spectral regions 7–14 and 17–23 μm with effective resolution elements ranging from 0.23 to 0.87 μm. In the long-wavelength region, the spectra are relatively smooth with the broad S(1) H2 collision-induced rotation line showing strong emission for Neptune. In the short-wavelength spectrum of Uranus, an emission feature attributable to C2H2 with a maximum stratospheric mixing ratio of 9 × 10−9 is apparent. An upper limit of 2 × 10−8 is placed on the maximum stratospheric mixing ratio of C2H6. The spectrum of Uranus is otherwise smooth and quantitatively consistent with the opacity provided by H2 collision-induced absorption and spectrally continuous stratospheric emission, as would be produced by aerosols. Upper limits to detecting the planet near 8 μm indicate a CH4 stratospheric mixing ratio of 1 × 10−5 or less, below a value consistent with saturation equilibrium at the temperature minimum. In the short-wavelength spectrum of Neptune, strong emission features of CH4 and C2H6 are evident and are consistent with local saturation equilibrium with maximum stratospheric mixing ratios of 0.02 and 6 × 10−6, respectively. Emission at 8–10 μm is most consistent with a [CH3D]/[CH4] volume abundance ratio of 5 × 10−5. The spectrum of Neptune near 13.5 μm is consistent with emission by stratospheric C2H2 in local saturation equilibrium and a maximum mixing ratio of 9 × 10−7. Radiance detected near 10.5 μm could be attributed to stratospheric C2H4 emission for a maximum mixing ratio of approximately 3 × 10−9. Quantitative results are considered preliminary, as some absolute radiance differences are noted with respect to earlier observations with discrete filters.  相似文献

Global recharge of the martian hydrologic system has traditionally been viewed as occurring through basal melting of the south polar cap. We conclude that regional recharge of a groundwater system at the large volcanic provinces, Elysium and Tharsis, is also very plausible and has several advantages over a south polar recharge source in providing a more direct, efficient supply of water to the outflow channel source regions surrounding these areas. This recharge scenario is proposed to have operated concurrently with and within the context of a global cryosphere–hydrosphere system of the subsurface characteristic of post-Noachian periods. To complement existing groundwater flow modeling studies, we examine geologic evidence and possible mechanisms for accumulation of water at high elevations on the volcanic rises, such as melting snow, infiltration, and increased effective permeability of the subsurface between the recharge zone and outflow source. Evidence for the presence of large Amazonian-aged cold-based piedmont glaciers on the Tharsis Montes has been well documented. Climate modeling predicts snow accumulation on high volcanic rises at obliquities thought to be typical over much of martian history. Thermal gradients causing basal melting of snowpack over 1 km thick could provide several kg m−2 yr−1 of water, charging a volume equivalent to the pore space in a square meter column of subsurface in less than 1.5×105 yr. In order to account for estimated outflow channel volumes, the subsurface volume above the elevation of the outflow channels must be charged several times over the area of Tharsis. Complete aquifer recharge can be accomplished in ∼0.3–2 My through the snowpack melting mechanism at Tharsis and in ∼5×104 years for channel requirements at Elysium. Abundant radial dikes emanating from large martian volcanic rises can crack and/or melt the cryosphere, initiating water outflow and creating anisotropies that can channel subsurface water from a high-elevation groundwater reservoir to outflow sources. In this model, snow accumulation, infiltration of meltwater, and increased effective permeabilities are a consequence of the geologic, thermal, and climatic environment at Elysium and Tharsis, and may have had a genetic influence on the preferential distribution of outflow channels around volcanic rises on Mars.  相似文献

Employing Eggleton’s stellar evolution code with the optically thick wind assumption, we have systematically studied the WD + He star channel of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), in which a carbon–oxygen WD accretes material from a He main-sequence star or a He subgiant to increase its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass. We mapped out the parameter spaces for producing SNe Ia. According to a detailed binary population synthesis approach, we find that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from this channel is ~0.3×10?3 yr?1, and that this channel can produce SNe Ia with short delay times (~45–140 Myr). We also find that the surviving companion stars in this channel have a high spatial velocity (>400 km/s) after the SN explosion, which could be an alternative origin for hypervelocity stars (HVSs), especially for HVSs such as US 708.  相似文献

Absolute spectrophotometry of the coma of Comet Kohoutek 1973f is discussed for the nights of January 24 and 26, 1974. Specific intensities are measured for spectral features and a continuum band in the wavelength region λλ3460–6062Å. The (0, 0) band of the Δν = 0 sequence of the violet system of the cyanogen molecule is analyzed and column densities of 1.7 × 1015m?2 and 3.4 × 1014m?2 are found for January 24 and 26, 1974, respectively. We investigate the influence of the following parameters on the crust properties of strange stars: the strange quark mass (m s), the strong coupling constant (αc) and the vacuum energy density (B). It is found that the mass density at the crust base of strange stars cannot reach the neutron drip density. For a conventional parameter set of m s=200 MeV, B 1/4 = 145 MeV and αc = 0.3, the maximum density at the crust base of a typical strange star is only 5.5 × 1010 gcm-3, and correspondingly the maximum crust mass is 1.4 ×10-6 M. Subsequently, we present the thermal structure and the cooling behavior of strange stars with crusts of different thickness, and under different diquark pairing gaps. Our work might provide important clues for distinguishing strange stars from neutron stars.  相似文献

The catalog of equatorial coordinates α and δ and B-magnitudes of stars of the northern sky (from–4° to +90°) was created as a part of the FON project at the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The data accumulated in the Joint Digital Archive of the Ukrainian Virtual Observatory were used. The total number of processed plates is 2260. Astronegatives were digitized with Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL TMA and Epson Expression 10000XL scanners in the 1200 dpi scanning mode. The majority of plates have a size of 30 × 30 cm (13000 × 13000 pixels). The catalog contains the data on 19451751 stars and galaxies with B ≤ 16.5m at the epoch of 1988.1. The coordinates of stars and galaxies were obtained in the Tycho-2 reference system, and B-magnitudes were determined in the system of photoelectric standards. The mean internal errors of the catalog are σαδ = 0.23″ and σB = 0.14m for all objects or σαδ = 0.10″ and σB = 0.07m for stars in the B = 7m–14m range. The convergence between the catalog and Tycho-2 is characterized by the following values: 0.06′′ and 0.15m. The mean-square difference in coordinates from the catalog and from UCAC-4 is σαδ = 0.30′′ (18 742 932 objects, or 96.36% of stars and galaxies, were cross-identified).  相似文献

Specifications of a new Apogee Alta U47 CCD camera mounted at the Kyiv meridian axial circle (MAC) are presented. The camera is based on the 1024 × 1024 pxl e2v CCD47-10 with pixel sizes of 13 × 13 μm. Observations are carried out in the scan-drift mode with an effective exposure time of 77 s for equatorial stars. The MAC photometric system answers the standard Johnson V band, the MAC limiting magnitude V is 17 m . The test MAC observations of 2009 give positional accuracy and V magnitude errors equal to approximately 0.1″ and 0.09 m , respectively, for Tycho-2 stars. The telescope is used for observations of equatorial stars with the purpose of detecting their positions, proper motion, and brightness.  相似文献

We present the results of our observations of eight magnetic Herbig Ae/Be stars obtained with the X‐shooter spectrograph mounted on UT2 at the VLT. X‐shooter provides a simultaneous, medium‐resolution and high‐sensitivity spectrum over the entire wavelength range from 300 to 2500 nm. We estimate the mass accretion rates (acc) of the targets from 13 different spectral diagnostics using empiric calibrations derived previously for T Tauri‐type stars and brown dwarfs. We have estimated the mass accretion rates of our targets, which range from 2 × 10–9 to 2 × 10–7 M yr–1. Furthermore, we have found accretion rate variability with amplitudes of 0.10–0.40 dex taking place on time scales from one day to tens of days. Additional future night‐to‐night observations need to be carried out to investigate the character of acc variability in details. Our study shows that the majority of the calibration relations can be applied to Herbig Ae/Be stars, but several of them need to be re‐calibrated on the basis of new spectral data for a larger number of Herbig Ae/Be stars (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Observations with a matrix photometer are reported. The stellar magnitudes in the BVRcIc bands are estimated for 80 comparison stars in the neighborhoods of 10 galaxies with active nuclei: 2 Seyfert galaxies, 4 quasars, and 4 BL Lac objects. The stellar magnitudes of the observed stars range from 11 to 19m.5. For stars with magnitudes of 14–15m the typical photometric errors are 0m.011, 0m.008, 0m.006, and 0m.007 in the B, V, R, and I bands, respectively. The BVRI magnitudes for most of these stars were not known previously. 14′ × 14′ finding charts for these stars are included. We present the results of our visual and near-infrared spectrophotometric observations for 77 variable stars obtained during 1971–1991 in Chile, Armenia, and Bolivia. The quasi-monochromatic, extraatmospheric fluxes from the stars are given in absolute energy units (W m?2 m?1) at all wavelengths of the spectral range at 2.5-nm intervals.  相似文献

We report multi-wavelength observations towards IRAS 16547–4247, a luminous infrared source with a bolometric luminosity of 6.2 × 104 L . Dust continuum observations at 1.2-mm indicate that this object is associated with a dust cloud with a size of about 0.4 pc in diameter and a mass of about 1.3 × 103 M . Radio continuum observations show the presence of a triple radio source consisting of a compact central object and two outer lobes, separated by about 0.3 pc, symmetrically located from the central source. Molecular hydrogen line observations show a chain of knots that trace a collimated flow extending over 1.5 pc. We suggest that IRAS 16547–4247 corresponds to a dense massive core which hosts near its central region a high-mass star in an early stage of evolution. This massive YSO is undergoing the ejection of a collimated stellar wind which drives the H2 flow. The radio emission from the lobes arises in shocks resulting from the interaction of the collimated wind with the surrounding medium. We conclude that the thermal jets found in the formation of low-mass stars are also produced in high-mass stars.  相似文献

In this work, we calculate the neutral Na production rates on the Moon and Mercury, as due to the impacts of meteoroids having an impact probability on the surface that can influence the daily observations of the exosphere: the meteoroids radius range considered for the Moon and Mercury are 10−8–0.15 and 10−8–0.10 m, respectively. We also estimate the mass of meteoroids that has impacted the surfaces of the Moon and Mercury in the last 3.8 Gy (after the end of the Late Heavy Bombardment).The results of our model are that (i) the Na production rates are ∼(3–4.9)×104 and ∼(1.8–2.3)×106 atoms cm−2 s−1, for Moon and Mercury, respectively, and (ii) in the last 3.8 Gy, the mass of meteoroids that has impacted the whole surface of the Moon and Mercury has been 8.86×1018 and 2.66×1019 g, respectively.  相似文献

We present some results of the photometric analysis of the stellar population of the irregular dwarf galaxy KK 230 on the basis of the archive database of the Hubble space telescope. The color index-magnitude diagram for KK 230 gets to magnitude 27 m in the V and I bands, and it comprises stellar populations of various ages. The age of the youngest main-sequence stars is 3.2 × 107 yr. These stars are distributed along the north-south direction in the picture plane, and this fact can be linked to the observed kinematics of the neutral gas in the galaxy. Older blue and red supergiants are no less than 1.6 × 108 years old, and such an age implies that the star formation was episodic over the last several hundreds of millions of years. As judged from the position of the tip of the red giant branch, the distance modulus for KK 230 is m ? M = 26.5 m . The corresponding distance is D = 2 Mpc. Based on the average absolute magnitude M I,RC and color index (V ? I)I,RC of the red clump, we conclude that the majority of KK 230 stars have an age of no more than (2–3) × 109 yr, their metallicity being Z ≈ 0.0004.  相似文献

Observations of the circumstellar maser emission from the long-period variable star Y Cas in the 1.35-cm water-vapor line are presented. The observations were performed with the RT-22 radio telescope at the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (Astrospace Center, Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences) in the period 1982–2005. The variations in the integrated flux Fint in the H2O line correlate with the visual light curve of the star. The phase delay Δ? between the Fint variations and the light curve is 0.2–0.4P (P is the period of the star). The H2O maser Y Cas belongs to transient sources: peaks of high maser activity alternate with intervals of a low emission level when the H2O-line flux does not exceed (0.1–0.5) × 10?20 W m?2. A “superperiod” of ~5.7 yr was found in the occurrence of activity peaks. A particularly strong maximum of maser radio emission took place at the end of 1997, when the flux Fint reached 15.6 × 10?20 W m?2. A model for the H2O maser variability in Y Cas is discussed. The variability is caused by a periodic action of shock waves driven by stellar pulsations. The H2O maser flares may be associated with short-lived episodes of enhanced mass loss by the star or with the propagation of a particularly strong shock wave when a planet orbiting the star passes through its periastron.  相似文献

The total number of processed plates is 477. The plates were digitized with the using Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL TMA and Epson Expression 10000XL scanners (scanning mode was 1200 dpi, the linear size of plates was 30 × 30 cm or 13000 × 13000 px). The catalog includes 1 975 967 stars and galaxies with B of up to 16.5 m as of the epoch of 1985.28. The coordinates of stars and galaxies were obtained in the Tycho-2 reference system and B-magnitudes were obtained in the system of photoelectric standards. The internal errors of the catalog for all the objects are σαδ = 0.23′′ and σ B = 0.12 m , and those for stars of the B range from 8 m –14 m , 0.11′′ and 0.06 m , respectively. The convergence between the calculated and reference positions is σαδ = 0.06′′ (for 171124 stars from Tycho-2), and that between the photoelectric stellar B-magnitudes is σ B = 0.15m (for 5130 stars). The external error from the comparison with UCAC-4 are σαδ = 0.33′′ (1928367 stars and galaxies have been cross identified).  相似文献

Photoelectric and photographic photometry of 72 stars was done in the field of the not-well-studied open cluster Czernik 20= OCl 427 in the direction of the Auriga constellation. Of these stars, a total of 43 have been found to be probable members down tom v− 15.75 mag. There is apparently a variable extinction across the field of the cluster withE(B-V) ranging from 0.53 to 0.38 mag. The cluster stars show a range in their ages from 1.0 × 107 to 7.1 × 107 years, indicating that Czernik 20 is young enough to be considered as a spiral-arm tracer in the study of our Galaxy. The distance of this cluster is found to be 4.27 ±0.14 kpc and it is located inside the outer Perseus arm of the Milky Way  相似文献
