Lighthill's method of calculating the aerodynamic emission of sound waves in a homogeneous atmosphere is extended to calculate the acoustic and gravity-wave emission by turbulent motions in a stratified atmosphere. The acoustic power output is P ac 103 o u o 3 /l o M 5 ergs/cm3 sec, and the upward gravity wave flux is F zgr 102 o U o 3 /l o (l o ergs/cm3 sec. Here u 0 is the turbulence velocity scale, l 0 is its length scale, and H the scale height at the atmosphere. M = u 0/c 0 is the Mach number of the turbulence. The acoustic power output is proportional to the maximum value of the turbulence spectrum, and inversely to its rate of falloff at high frequencies. The stratification cuts off the acoustic emission at low Mach numbers. The gravity emission occurs near the critical angle to the vertical c = cos–1 / 2, where 2 2 = ( - 1)/ 2 (c 0/H), and at very short wavelengths. It is proportional to the large wave number tail of the turbulence spectrum. On the sun, gravity-wave emission is much more efficient than acoustic, but can occur only from turbulent motions in stable regions, whereas acoustic waves are produced by turbulence in the convection zone.  相似文献

The dispersion equation for hydromagnetic surface waves along a plasma-plasma interface has been solved as a function of the compressibility factor c 1/v A1, where c 1 and v A1 are the acoustic and Alfvén wave speed in one of the medium, for general wave propagation direction. Both slow and fast magnetosonic surface waves can exist. The nature and existence of these waves depends on the values of c 1/v A1 and , the angle of wave propagation. For low- plasmas only fast mode exists. The slow mode does not propagate below a critical value of c 1. When c 1 the phase velocity of the slow wave tend to the Alfvén surface wave velocity in the incompressible media and for large the phase velocity of the fast wave approaches this value. The phase velocity of the slow wave increases whereas for the fast wave it decreases with increase in the angle .  相似文献

Based on analyzing corona images taken by the LASCO C1, C2, and C3 instruments, a study is made of the behavior of the streamer belt spanning one half of the 1996–2001 cycle of solar activity, from minimum to maximum activity, in the absence of coronal mass ejections. It is shown that: (1) The position of the streamer belt relative to the solar equator is generally characterized by two angles: o and E, where o is the latitudinal position (near the solar surface) of the middle of the base of the helmet, the top of which gradually transforms to a ray of the streamer belt with a further distance from the Sun, and E is the latitude of this ray for R>5–6 R from the Sun's center where the ray becomes radial. (2) Only rays lying at some of the selected latitudes o retain their radial orientation (oE) throughout their extent. Namely: o0° (equator), o±90° (north and south poles), and the angle o lying in the range ±(65°–75°) in the N- and S-hemispheres. (3) A deviation of rays from their radial orientation in the direction normal to the surface of the streamer belt occurs: for latitudes o<|65°–75°| toward the equator (>0°) reaching a maximum in the N and S hemispheres, respectively, when OM40°, and OM–42° for latitudes o>|65°–75°| toward the pole (<0°). The regularities obtained here are a numerical test which can be used to assess of the validity of the theory for describing the behavior of the Sun's quasi-stationary corona over a cycle of solar activity.  相似文献

A simplified representation of the temperature distribution in the solar photosphere is proposed: ( 0) = 0 - 1 log 0. An expression is derived for the emergent continuous spectrum from the simple model. The limitations and applications of the simple model are discussed.  相似文献

It has empirically been shown that, for a given value of the effective temperature, the correction in (B-V) due to line blanketing varies linearly with the metallicity parameter S. Next, on the basis of considerations different from those used to obtain a similar result by Sturch (1966), a relation between reciprocal effective temperature e (=5040/T e ) and intrinsic line-free colour index(B-V) o,c has been obtained based on the e and (B-V) values for five RR Lyr variables. Relations between e and intrinsic colour(B-V) o for different groups of stars having a S parameter in the range 0S11 have also been obtained.  相似文献

Two-dimensional unsteady free convection and mass transfer, flow of an incompressible viscous dissipative and electrically conducting fluid, past an infinite, vertical porous plate, is considered, when the flow, is subjected in the action of uniform transverse magnetic field. The magnetic Reynolds number is taken to be small enough so that the induced magnetic field is negligible. The solution of the problem is obtained in the form of power series of Eckert numberE, which is very small for incompressible fluids. Analytical expressions for the velocity field and temperature field are given, as well as for the skin friction and the rate of heat transfer for the case of the mean steady flow and for the unsteady one. The influence of the magnetic parameter,M, modified Grashof numberG c , Schmidt numberS c and frequency , on the flow field, is discussed with the help of graphs, when the plate is being cooled, by the free convection currents (G r ,E>0), or heated (G r ,E<0). A comparative study with hydrodynamic case (M=0) and the hydromagnetic one (M0) is also made whenever necessary.List of symbols B0 applied magnetic field - |B| amplitude of the skin friction - C concentration inside the boundary layer - C concentration in the free stream - C w concentration at the porous plate - C p specific heat at constant pressure - D diffusion coefficient - E Eckert number - g x acceleration due to gravity - G c modified Grashof number - G r Grashof number - M magnetic parameter - N u Nusselt number - P Prandtl number - |Q| amplitude of the rate of heat transfer - S c Schmidt number - T temperature of the fluid - T w temperature of the plate - T temperature of the fluid in the free stream - T r ,T i fluctuating parts of the temperature profile - u, v velocity components in thex, y directions - u dimensionless velocity in thex direction - u 0 mean steady velocity - u 1 unsteady part of the velocity - u r ,u i fluctuating parts of the velocity profile - U dimensionless free stream volocity - U 0 mean free stream velocity - v 0 suction velocity - x, y co-rodinate system Greek Symbols phase angle of the skin-friction - coefficient of volume expansion - * coefficient of expansion with concentration - phase angle of the rate of heat transfer - dimensionless co-ordinate normal to the plate - dimensionless temperature - 0 mean steady temperature - 1 unsteady part of temperature - k thermal conductivity - v kinematic viscocity - density of fluid in the boundary layer - density of fluid in the free stream - electrical conductivity of the fluid - skin friction - 0 mean skin friction - frequency - dimensionless frequency  相似文献

As a consequence of the Taylor–Proudman balance, a balance between the pressure, Coriolis and buoyancy forces in the radial and latitudinal momentum equations (that is expected to be amply satisfied in the lower solar convection zone), the superadiabatic gradient is determined by the rotation law and by an unspecified function of r, say, S(r), where r is the radial coordinate. If the rotation law and S(r) are known, then the solution of the energy equation, performed in this paper in the framework of the ML formalism, leads to a knowledge of the Reynolds stresses, convective fluxes, and meridional motions. The ML-formalism is an extension of the mixing length theory to rotating convection zones, and the calculations also involve the azimuthal momentum equation, from which an expression for the meridional motions in terms of the Reynolds stresses can be derived. The meridional motions are expanded as U r(r,)=P 2(cos)2(r)/r 2+P 4(cos)4(r)/r 2 +..., and a corresponding equation for U (r,). Here is the polar angle, is the density, and P 2(cos), P 4(cos) are Legendre polynomials. A good approximation to the meridional motion is obtained by setting 4(r)=–H2(r) with H–1.6, a constant. The value of 2(r) is negative, i.e., the P 2 flow rises at the equator and sinks at the poles. For the value of H obtained in the numerical calculations, the meridional motions have a narrow countercell at the poles, and the convective flux has a relative maximum at the poles, a minimum at mid latitudes and a larger maximum at the equator. Both results are in agreement with the observations.  相似文献

The techniques and principal results of observational studies of stellar activity are summarized. Both chromospheric and coronal emission clearly track surface magnetic field properties, but it is not well known how the detailed relation between the emission and surface magnetic fields varies with spectral type. For lower Main-Sequence stars of the same spectral type, there is clear evidence of a close relationship between mean activity level and rotation period P rot. There is also less definitive evidence for a similar dependence on convective overturn time c , such that activity depends on the single parameter Ro = P rot/ c . For single stars, stellar rotation, and magnetic activity both decline smoothly with age. This implies a feedback between angular momentum loss rate and activity level. Temporal variations in mean stellar activity level mimic the solar cycle only for old stars like the Sun, being much more irregular for younger stars. The characteristic timescale of the variations (the cycle period) appears to depend on Ro for old stars, but shows no clear dependence on either rotation rate or spectral type for younger stars. Further data on mean activity and its variation for a large number of lower Main-Sequence stars should contribute significantly to our understanding of the causes of stellar magnetic activity.  相似文献

We consider the linear stability of the equilibrium points of the generic rotating potentials U(r), U(r, ), U(r, and U(r, , . The stability analysis is performed using the concept of Krein's signature. This signature is calculated for all eigenvalues of the above potentials. Thereby, the Lagrangian points of the restricted three-body problem and the synchronous satellites of oblate and prolate planets are also studied. We find also the new positions of the eigenvalues for perturbations of the original L 4 and L 5 points of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Finally, we study the problem with the mass ratio µ close to the critical value and the stability of geostationary satellites perturbed by the Moon.  相似文献

We semi-quantitatively calculate the distribution of energy in frequency and angle emitted from a sheet of charges that are moving out relativistically along dipolar magnetic field lines originating near the magnetic polar caps of a rotating neutron star. The angular distribution is conical with the angle of maximum intensity varying with frequency as –1/4 for c 2 c /(R M 2), whereRM is the initial angular radius of the charge sheet at the surface of the star of radiusR. At higher frequencies the width of the angular cone remains constant. The radiation is linearly polarized with the polarization vector in the plane of the line of sight and the magnetic axis. A sheet of uniform charge density and finite thickness has a frequency spectrum that varies from –3/2 to –4 for c and c , respectively. These features are in good general agreement with the observed characteristics of the intensity, pulse shape, and frequency spectrum of the radio pulses from pulsars.Operated by Associated Universities, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Using the flux-transport equation in the absence of sources, we study the relation between a highly peaked polar magnetic field and the poleward meridional flow that concentrates it. If the maximum flow speed m greatly exceeds the effective diffusion speed /R, then the field has a quasi-equilibrium configuration in which the poleward convection of flux via meridional flow approximately balances the equatorward spreading via supergranular diffusion. In this case, the flow speed () and the magnetic field B() are related by the steady-state approximation () (/R)B()/B() over a wide range of colatitudes from the poles to midlatitudes. In particular, a general flow profile of the form sin p cos q which peaks near the equator (q p) will correspond to a cos n magnetic field at high latitudes only if p = 1 and m = n /R. Recent measurements of n 8 and 600 km2 s–1 would then give m 7 m s–1.  相似文献

By combining two two-dimensional subspaces, closed into themselves due to curvature, it is possible to create a model of three-dimensional space of the same properties. If the Universe is a space of this type, its effect is that of a monstrous lens. Close objects are observed to diminish according to the normal law of perspective; however, the remote galaxies are seen to be very highly magnified. The apparent angular size2 of a galaxy is more than the size1 in flat space according to relation:2 =1 cosec , where is the angular distance from the observer to the galaxy. The diameter2 d of a galaxy in curved space must be in the same relation to a diameter1 d with no curvature of space:2 d=1 d cosec . The apparent angular size2 and diameter2 d are distorted shapes in consequence of an optical illusion caused by the spatial curvature. It is necessary to distribute the multitude of galaxies into two parts in accordance with their location on the close or reverse hemihypersphere of the Universe. The minimum of apparent angular size2 of a galaxy of diameter1 d is at the equatorial zone. The most likely candidates for location in the reverse hemi-hypersphere are cD's of apparent supergiant sizes due, probably, to the curvature of space. The existence of supergiant sizes of galaxies is the second indirect proof, besides superluminal velocities, that the Universe is closed into itself through curvature. The third indirect evidence, i.e., inductive confirmation of the same fact, is the superposition of galaxies which need not inevitably be a new alternative to the present theories of collisions, cannibalism, merger, etc.The fourth indirect proof of the positive curvature of the Universe is the occurrence of background radiation, because that must vanish in hyperbolic space irrespective of its origin. The gravitational lens effect acquires another theoretical form, as usual, in the case of remote galaxies, because it is impossible to distinguish between gravitator and lensing image.  相似文献

The Earth tidal deformation causes an additional gravitational potential. Its effect on the Moon orbital motion has been studied by several authors. In this contribution, we develop this additional potential without specifying the inertial frame chosen. For this purpose, we use the properties of the representation of rotation groups in 3 dimensions space. We finally obtain the interaction potential between the distorted Earth and the Moon which is a necessary preliminary to the study of the evolution of the Earth-Moon system.Nomenclature T.R.O Tide raising object - (, , ) Spherical coordinates of the T.R.O. - (J, E ) Earth spin axis orientation. It is shown that small magnetic perturbations can significantly alter the rates of cyclotron growth, absorption, mode conversion, and refraction because of the sensitive dependence of these processes on the field strength in narrow layers. In particular, growth lengths are increased, absorption depths decreased, mode conversion becomes more effective, and turbulent refraction leads to isotropization of the emission. The criteria for significant effects to occur are derived and it is shown that they can be met by the few-percent field perturbations observed in coronal loops. Relative to the theory of cyclotron-maser emission in smoothly varying plasmas, perturbations enable fundamental o-mode (o1) and second-harmonic x-mode (x2) radiation to saturate more effectively, increase the chance of x1, o1, and x2 radiation escaping to infinity through absorption and mode-coupling windows, and partially isotropize radiation emitted near the x-mode cutoff. It is concluded that o1 and x1 emission are both likely to be present, and that x2 emission is possible under some circumstances. However, x1 radiation can escape only at near-parallel propagation ( 0) or via mode conversion to the o-mode at 90°, whereas o1 and x2 emission can escape for a wide range of angles around = 0 and, under many circumstances, near = 90°.  相似文献

Following a similar discussion given earlier for the solar case (De Jager, 1972) we compute in this paper spectral line profiles for the spatial wavelengths in which a stellar motion field can be decomposed, and thereafter the macro-and micro-turbulent filter functionsf M(k) andf (k), where is the optical scale height andf 2(k) dk the fraction of the energy of the turbulent motions between wavenumbersk andk+dk of the spectrum of turbulence that contributes to either kind of turbulence. If micro-and macro-turbulent velocity components are known for a certain star, and if the spectrum of turbulence is sharp enough, the ratiof M/f would enable one to derive the average size of the turbulent elements in the star's atmosphere. The computations apply to weak lines in idealized stellar atmospheres, and refer to two cases: isotropic turbulence, and radial pulsations. These filters can be suitably used in a diagnostic method for the analysis of the motion field in the solar and stellar atmospheres. Some examples of applications to stars of very different kinds are given.  相似文献

Previous efforts to construct solar coronal fields using surface magnetograph data have generally employed a least squares minimization technique in order to determine the spherical harmonic expansion coefficients of the magnetic scalar potential. Provided there is no source surface high up in the corona, we show that knowledge of the line-of-sight component of the surface magnetic field, B i = B r sin + B cos , is sufficient to uniquely determine the potential coronal magnetic field by an explicit construction of the magnetic scalar potential for an arbitrary B l (, ).The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

A critical analysis of the methods and results of estimating the optical thickness of the dust component in the Martian atmosphere 0, the particle size r 0, and the imaginary part of the refractive index n ihas shown the following. (1) Observational data on the brightness distribution over the Martian disk as well as the phase dependences of diffusely reflected light and the azimuthal dependences of diffusely transmitted light are most appropriate to use only for verifying the reliability of the aerosol parameters determined by other methods. (2) If the morning and evening fogs in the atmosphere are disregarded, the Bouguer–Lambert–Beer method used to analyze the solar-brightness attenuation measured on the planetary surface yields overestimated extraatmospheric solar intensity I 0and atmospheric optical depth 0. At the Viking 1landing site, I 0and 0could be overestimated by a factor of 1.7 and by 0.35, respectively. (3) The aerosol size determined by analyzing measurements of the azimuthal dependences for the Martian sky brightness at low elevations of the Sun most likely corresponds to the fog particles. (4) If overestimated values of I 0were used to standardize the observations of the solar radiation transmitted by the Martian atmosphere, then n iwere also overestimated; using overestimated 0also affected the reliability of the latter. (5) The problem of reliability of the available 0and r 0estimates for periods of high atmospheric transparency is yet to be solved. For the highest activity of the dust storm in 1971, it was found that 4.5 r 0 7.5 m for the lognormal particle size distribution with 2= 0.2 and the optical thickness of a dust cloud 0 15. (6) The spectral values of the apparent albedo of Mars measured in October 1971 at a phase angle of 42° in the spectral range 0.250 0.717 allowed the imaginary part of the refractive index to be estimated in terms of a model of a dust cloud composed of spherical particles with the lognormal size distribution with r 0= 4.5 m and 2= 0.2.  相似文献

Exact corotations are equilibrium points in the phase space of the asteroidal elliptic restricted problem of three bodies averaged over the synodic period, at a mean-motions resonance. If the resonant critical angle is =(p+q) jup pq, exact corotations are double resonant motions defined by the conditionsd/dt=0 andd(– jup )/dt=0. The first condition is characteristic of the periods resonance(p + q) : p and the second one is a secular resonance equivalent to that usually known as thev 5-resonance. This paper presents the symmetric solutions =0 (mod ), = jup (mod ). Corotations have a coherence property which is unique in non-collisional Celestial Mechanics: An elementary calculation shows that, in the neighbourhood of these solutions, the motions cluster aroundp independent longitude values and are, in each cluster, as close together as and are close to the equilibrium values.  相似文献

The theory of homogeneous nucleation is discussed and applied to the formation of interstellar grains. Special attention is given to the thermodynamics of very small clusters (N10); it is found that, at least for carbon and metals, the free energies ofN-mers may be conveniently expressed in terms of a parameter N which is nearly independent ofN. Estimates of N from the Lothe-Pound theory disagree with the experimental observations forN<10; it is preferable to simply approximate N 1/2 ( is known from bulk properties). The kinetic process of nucleation and cluster growth is essentially just a function of two dimensionless parameters; /T and . The domain in which nucleation theory should be valid is delineated. Approximate formulae are given for the critical supercooling, the critical cluster size, and the mean final cluster size; more accurate numerical results are presented graphically. Nucleation of grains in planetary nebulae, novae, and red giant outflows is discussed. The origin of the Pt-rich nuggets found in the Allende meteorite is considered; it is shown that the nuggets could have been formed by homogeneous nucleation in the primordial solar nebula, whereas they couldnot have formed in a supernova explosion.Invited contribution to the Proceedings of a Workshop onThermodynamics and Kinetics of Dust Formation in the Space Medium, held at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, Houston, 6–8 September, 1978.  相似文献

In this paper, general model analysis of the form c i i () for the fractional loss of lightf() exhibited by a close binary system will be considered in the sense of the least-squares criterion. A general recursive method will be established for constructing the normal equations for the most useful functions i (), and an economical storage of the method on a digital computer, with its computational steps, will also be given. Moreover, a full recursive computational algorithm for the least-squares approximation will also be established. By means of this algorithm, all the solution vectors, the variance for different orders of fit and the corresponding variance-covariance matrix could be computed once and for all and, moreover, recursively. The economical storage of the algorithm and its computational steps will be given. Finally, some of the practical difficulties encountered in the application of the least-squares criterion will be analysed, and some techniques for detecting and controlling these difficulties are also given. Numerical examples on the Algol system using a Fourier cosine series of the form c i cos [(j - 1) /] will be given for illustration.  相似文献
