The present paper provides a case study of the assessment of the potential for CO2 storage in the deep saline aquifers of the Bécancour region in southern Québec. This assessment was based on a hydrogeological and petrophysical characterization using existing and newly acquired core and well log data from hydrocarbon exploration wells. Analyses of data obtained from different sources provide a good understanding of the reservoir hydrogeology and petrophysics. Profiles of formation pressure, temperature, density, viscosity, porosity, permeability, and net pay were established for Lower Paleozoic sedimentary aquifers. Lateral hydraulic continuity is dominant at the regional scale, whereas vertical discontinuities are apparent for most physical and chemical properties. The Covey Hill sandstone appears as the most suitable saline aquifer for CO2 injection/storage. This unit is found at a depth of more than 1 km and has the following properties: fluid pressures exceed 14 MPa, temperature is above 35 °C, salinity is about 108,500 mg/l, matrix permeability is in the order of 3 × 10?16 m2 (0.3 mDarcy) with expected higher values of formation-scale permeability due to the presence of natural fractures, mean porosity is 6 %, net pay reaches 282 m, available pore volume per surface area is 17 m3/m2, rock compressibility is 2 × 10?9 Pa?1 and capillary displacement pressure of brine by CO2 is about 0.4 MPa. While the containment for CO2 storage in the Bécancour saline aquifers can be ensured by appropriate reservoir characteristics, the injectivity of CO2 and the storage capacity could be limiting factors due to the overall low permeability of aquifers. This characterization offers a solid basis for the subsequent development of a numerical hydrogeological model, which will be used for CO2 injection capacity estimation, CO2 injection scenarios and risk assessment.  相似文献

Deep saline aquifers in sedimentary basins are considered to have the greatest potential for CO2 geological storage in order to reduce carbon emissions. CO2 injected into a saline sandstone aquifer tends to migrate upwards toward the caprock because the density of the supercritical CO2 phase is lower than that of formation water. The accumulated CO2 in the upper portions of the reservoir gradually dissolves into brine, lowers pH and changes the aqueous complexation, whereby induces mineral alteration. In turn, the mineralogical composition could impose significant effects on the evolution of solution, further on the mineralized CO2. The high density of aqueous phase will then move downward due to gravity, give rise to “convective mixing,” which facilitate the transformation of CO2 from the supercritical phase to the aqueous phase and then to the solid phase. In order to determine the impacts of mineralogical compositions on trapping amounts in different mechanisms for CO2 geological storage, a 2D radial model was developed. The mineralogical composition for the base case was taken from a deep saline formation of the Ordos Basin, China. Three additional models with varying mineralogical compositions were carried out. Results indicate that the mineralogical composition had very obvious effects on different CO2 trapping mechanisms. Specific to our cases, the dissolution of chlorite provided Mg2+ and Fe2+ for the formation of secondary carbonate minerals (ankerite, siderite and magnesite). When chlorite was absent in the saline aquifer, the dominant secondary carbon sequestration mineral was dawsonite, and the amount of CO2 mineral trapping increased with an increase in the concentration of chlorite. After 3000 years, 69.08, 76.93, 83.52 and 87.24 % of the injected CO2 can be trapped in the solid (mineral) phase, 16.05, 11.86, 8.82 and 6.99 % in the aqueous phase, and 14.87, 11.21, 7.66 and 5.77 % in the gas phase for Case 1 through 4, respectively.  相似文献

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been proposed as a potential technology to mitigate climate change. However, there is currently a huge gap between the current global deployment of this technology and that which will be ultimately required. Whilst CO2 can be captured at any geographic location, storage of CO2 will be constrained by the geological storage potential in the area the CO2 is captured. The geological storage potential can be evaluated at a very high level according to the tectonic setting of the target area. To date, CCS deployment has been restricted to more favourable tectonic settings, such as extensional passive margin and post-rift basins and compressional foreland basins. However, to reach the adequate level of deployment, the potential for CCS of regions in different tectonic settings needs to be explored and assessed worldwide. Surprisingly, the potential of compressional basins for carbon storage has not been universally evaluated according to the global and regional carbon emission distribution. Here, we present an integrated source-to-sink analysis tool that combines comprehensive, open-access information on basin distribution, hydrocarbon resources and CO2 emissions based on geographical information systems (GIS). Compressional settings host some of the most significant hydrocarbon-bearing basins and 36% of inland CO2 emissions but, to date, large-scale CCS facilities in compressional basins are concentrated in North America and the Middle East only. Our source-to-sink tool allows identifying five high-priority regions for prospective CCS development in compressional basins: North America, north-western South America, south-eastern Europe, the western Middle East and western China. We present a study of the characteristics of these areas in terms of CO2 emissions and CO2 storage potential. Additionally, we conduct a detailed case-study analysis of the Sichuan Basin (China), one of the compressional basins with the greatest CO2 storage potential. Our results indicate that compressional basins will have to play a critical role in the future of CCS if this technology is to be implemented worldwide.  相似文献

From 2010 to 2012, the China Geological Survey Center for Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology Survey (CHEGS) carried out the project “Potential evaluation and demonstration project of CO2 Geological Storage in China”. During this project, we developed an evaluation index system and technical methods for the potential and suitability of CO2 geological storage based on China’s geological conditions, and evaluated the potential and suitability of the primary basins for CO2 geological storage, in order to draw a series of regional scale maps (at a scale of 1:5000000) and develop an atlas of the main sedimentary basins in China. By using these tools, we delineated many potential targets for CO2 storage. We also built techniques and methods for site selection and the exploration and assessment of CO2 geological storage in deep saline aquifers. Furthermore, through cooperation with the China Shenhua Coal to Liquid and Chemical Co., Ltd., we successfully constructed the first coal-based demonstration project for CO2 geological storage in deep saline aquifers in the Yijinhuoluo Banner of Ordos in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which brought about the basic preliminary theories, techniques, and methods of geological CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers under China’s geological conditions.  相似文献

Enhanced oil recovery based on CO2 injection is expected to increase recovery from Croatian oil fields. Large quantities of CO2 are generated during hydrocarbon processing produced from gas and gas condensate fields situated in the north-western part of Croatia. First CO2 injection project will be implemented on the Ivani? Oil Field. Numerical modelling based on Upper Miocene sandstone core samples testing results have shown the decrease of oil viscosity during CO2 injection. Some of the characteristics of the testing samples are porosity 21.5–23.6 %, permeability 14–80 × 10?15 m2 and initial water saturation 28–38.5 %. Water alternating foam (WAF) and water alternating gas (WAG) simulations have provided satisfactory results. The WAF injection process has provided better results, but due to the process sensitivity and costs WAG is recommended for future application. During the pilot project 16 × 106 m3 CO2 and 5 × 104 m3 of water were injected. Additional amounts of hydrocarbons (4,440 m3 of oil and 2.26 × 106 m3 of gas) were produced which confirmed injection of CO2 as a successful tertiary oil recovery mechanism in Upper Miocene sandstone reservoirs in the Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System.  相似文献

The present analysis adjusts previous estimates of global ocean CaCO3 production rates substantially upward, to 133 × 1012 mol yr?1 plankton production and 42 × 1012 mol yr?1 shelf benthos production. The plankton adjustment is consistent with recent satellite-based estimates; the benthos adjustment includes primarily an upward adjustment of CaCO3 production on so-called carbonate-poor sedimentary shelves and secondarily pays greater attention to high CaCO3 mass (calcimass) and turnover of shelf communities on temperate and polar shelves. Estimated CaCO3 sediment accumulation rates remain about the same as they have been for some years: ~20 × 1012 mol yr?1 on shelves and 11 × 1012 mol yr?1 in the deep ocean. The differences between production and accumulation of calcareous materials call for dissolution of ~22 × 1012 mol yr?1 (~50 %) of shelf benthonic carbonate production and 122 × 1012 mol yr?1 (>90 %) of planktonic production. Most CaCO3 production, whether planktonic or benthonic, is assumed to take place in water depths of <100 m, while most dissolution is assumed to occur below this depth. The molar ratio of CO2 release to CaCO3 precipitation (CO2↑/CaCO3↓) is <1.0 and varies with depth. This ratio, Ψ, is presently about 0.66 in surface seawater and 0.85 in ocean waters deeper than about 1000 m. The net flux of CO2 associated with CaCO3 reactions in the global ocean in late preindustrial time is estimated to be an apparent influx from the atmosphere to the ocean, of +7 × 1012 mol C yr?1, at a time scale of 102–103 years. The CaCO3-mediated influx of CO2 is approximately offset by CO2 release from organic C oxidation in the water column. Continuing ocean acidification will have effects on CaCO3 and organic C metabolic responses to the oceanic inorganic C cycle, although those responses remain poorly quantified.  相似文献

We estimated CO2 and CH4 emissions from mangrove-associated waters of the Andaman Islands by sampling hourly over 24 h in two tidal mangrove creeks (Wright Myo; Kalighat) and during transects in contiguous shallow inshore waters, immediately following the northeast monsoons (dry season) and during the peak of the southwest monsoons (wet season) of 2005 and 2006. Tidal height correlated positively with dissolved O2 and negatively with pCO2, CH4, total alkalinity (TAlk) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and pCO2 and CH4 were always highly supersaturated (330–1,627 % CO2; 339–26,930 % CH4). These data are consistent with a tidal pumping response to hydrostatic pressure change. There were no seasonal trends in dissolved CH4 but pCO2 was around twice as high during the 2005 wet season than at other times, in both the tidal surveys and the inshore transects. Fourfold higher turbidity during the wet season is consistent with elevated net benthic and/or water column heterotrophy via enhanced organic matter inputs from adjacent mangrove forest and/or the flushing of CO2-enriched soil waters, which may explain these CO2 data. TAlk/DIC relationships in the tidally pumped waters were most consistent with a diagenetic origin of CO2 primarily via sulphate reduction, with additional inputs via aerobic respiration. A decrease with salinity for pCO2, CH4, TAlk and DIC during the inshore transects reflected offshore transport of tidally pumped waters. Estimated mean tidal creek emissions were ~23–173 mmol m?2 day?1 CO2 and ~0.11–0.47 mmol m?2 day?1 CH4. The CO2 emissions are typical of mangrove-associated waters globally, while the CH4 emissions fall at the low end of the published range. Scaling to the creek open water area (2,700 km2) gave total annual creek water emissions ~3.6–9.2?×?1010 mol CO2 and 3.7–34?×?107 mol CH4. We estimated emissions from contiguous inshore waters at ~1.5?×?1011 mol CO2?year?1 and 2.6?×?108 mol CH4?year?1, giving total emissions of ~1.9?×?1011 mol CO2?year?1 and ~3.0?×?108 mol CH4?year?1 from a total area of mangrove-influenced water of ~3?×?104 km2. Evaluating such emissions in a range of mangrove environments is important to resolving the greenhouse gas balance of mangrove ecosystems globally. Future such studies should be integral to wider quantitative process studies of the mangrove carbon balance.  相似文献

Significant potential exists for CO2 sequestration in coalbed methane reservoirs of the Black Warrior basin. Reservoir simulation is an appropriate approach to estimate both the storage capacity and methane recovery enhancement. However, prior to a reliable reservoir modeling and simulation, conducting an accurate and comprehensive reservoir characterization study is necessary. The purpose of the present study is twofold: (a) to provide a rigorous reservoir characterization study required for modeling Mary Lee coal group in the Blue Creek field of the Black Warrior basin; (b) to run fluid flow simulations to predict the performance of ECBM process applied to an under pressured zone of the Mary Lee coal group. According to the current well configuration of Blue Creek field, three applicable well patterns, namely a direct line drive, an inverted 5-spot and a normal 5-spot were separately (i.e., in three distinct cases) used for simulating ECBM. Simulations were run on an approximately 32 ha (80-acre) drainage area, and included coal matrix shrinkage/swelling effects. The injected gas was assumed to be pure CO2. Using an inverted 5-spot pattern, simulations predicted that after 7.5 years of CO2 injection, approximately 32,000 tonnes of CO2 would be sequestered per 32 ha of this zone and that methane recovery would be enhanced by 36 %. Using a normal 5-spot pattern, CO2 breakthrough would occur 2.4 years earlier, and about 40,000 tonnes CO2 would be sequestered. However, methane production would be enhanced by 33 %. Considering methane recovery enhancement, direct line drive pattern delivered poor results in comparison with two other patterns. As expected, the results also showed that CO2 injection would increase water production.  相似文献

This study focused on the target injection layers of deep saline aquifers in the Shiqianfeng Fm. in the Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) Demonstration Projects in the Ordos Basin, northwestern China. The study employed a combination method of experiments and numerical simulation to investigate the dissolution mechanism and impact factors of CO2 in these saline aquifers. The results showed (1) CO2 solubility in different types of water chemistry were shown in ascending order: MgCl2-type water < CaCl2-type water < Na2SO4-type water < NaCl-type water < Na2CO3-type water < distilled water. These results were consistent with the calculated results undertaken by TOUGHREACT with about 5% margin of error. CO2 solubility of Shiqianfeng Fm. saline was 1.05 mol/L; (2) compared with distilled water, the more complex the water’s chemical composition, the greater the increase in HCO3 ?concentration. While the water’s composition was relatively simple, the tested water’s HCO3 ?concentrations were in close accord with the calculated value undertaken by the TOUGHREACT code, and the more complex the water’s composition, the poorer the agreement was, probably due to the complex and unstable HCO3 ? complicating matters when in an aqueous solution system including both tested HCO3 ?concentration and calculated HCO3 ?concentration; (3) the CO2 solubility in the saline at the temperature conditions of 55 °C and 70 °C were 1.17 and 1.02 mol/L. When compared with the calculated value of 1.20 and 1.05 mol/L, they were almost the same with only 1 and 3% margin of error; concentrations of HCO3 ? were 402.73 mg/L (0.007 mol/L) and 385.65 mg/L (0.006 mol/L), while the simulation results were 132.16 mg/L (0.002 mol/L) and 128.52 mg/L (0.002 mol/L). From the contrast between the tested data and the calculated data undertaken by the TOUGHREACT code, it was shown that TOUGHRACT code could better simulate the interaction between saline and CO2 in the dissolution sequestration capacity. Therefore, TOUGHREACT code could be used for the inter-process prediction of CO2 long-term geological storage of CO2; (4) The Ca2+ concentration and SO4 2?concentration in saline water had less effect on the solubility of CO2 and HCO3 ?concentration. In addition, TDS and pH values of saline affected not only the solubility of CO2, but also the conversion of CO2 to HCO3 ? due to that they can affect the activity and acid-base balance. So in fact, we just need to consider that the TDS and pH values are main impact factors in the dissolution sequestration capacity of CO2 geological sequestration in deep saline aquifers.  相似文献

The speciation of CO2 in dacite, phonolite, basaltic andesite, and alkali silicate melt was studied by synchrotron infrared spectroscopy in diamond anvil cells to 1,000 °C and more than 200 kbar. Upon compression to 110 kbar at room temperature, a conversion of molecular CO2 into a metastable carbonate species was observed for dacite and phonolite glass. Upon heating under high pressure, molecular CO2 re-appeared. Infrared extinction coefficients of both carbonate and molecular CO2 decrease with temperature. This effect can be quantitatively modeled as the result of a reduced occupancy of the vibrational ground state. In alkali silicate (NBO/t = 0.98) and basaltic andesite (NBO/t = 0.42) melt, only carbonate was detected up to the highest temperatures studied. For dacite (NBO/t = 0.09) and phonolite melts (NBO/t = 0.14), the equilibrium CO2 + O2? = CO3 2? in the melt shifts toward CO2 with increasing temperature, with ln K = ?4.57 (±1.68) + 5.05 (±1.44) 103 T ?1 for dacite melt (ΔH = ?42 kJ mol?1) and ln K = ?6.13 (±2.41) + 7.82 (±2.41) 103 T ?1 for phonolite melt (ΔH = ?65 kJ mol?1), where K is the molar ratio of carbonate over molecular CO2 and T is temperature in Kelvin. Together with published data from annealing experiments, these results suggest that ΔS and ΔH are linear functions of NBO/t. Based on this relationship, a general model for CO2 speciation in silicate melts is developed, with ln K = a + b/T, where T is temperature in Kelvin and a = ?2.69 ? 21.38 (NBO/t), b = 1,480 + 38,810 (NBO/t). The model shows that at temperatures around 1,500 °C, even depolymerized melts such as basalt contain appreciable amounts of molecular CO2, and therefore, the diffusion coefficient of CO2 is only slightly dependent on composition at such high temperatures. However, at temperatures close to 1,000 °C, the model predicts a much stronger dependence of CO2 solubility and speciation on melt composition, in accordance with available solubility data.  相似文献

CBM and CO2-ECBM related sorption processes in coal: A review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This article reviews the state of research on sorption of gases (CO2, CH4) and water on coal for primary recovery of coalbed methane (CBM), secondary recovery by an enhancement with carbon dioxide injection (CO2-ECBM), and for permanent storage of CO2 in coal seams.Especially in the last decade a large amount of data has been published characterizing coals from various coal basins world-wide for their gas sorption capacity. This research was either related to commercial CBM production or to the usage of coal seams as a permanent sink for anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Presently, producing methane from coal beds is an attractive option and operations are under way or planned in many coal basins around the globe. Gas-in-place determinations using canister desorption tests and CH4 isotherms are performed routinely and have provided large datasets for correlating gas transport and sorption properties with coal characteristic parameters.Publicly funded research projects have produced large datasets on the interaction of CO2 with coals. The determination of sorption isotherms, sorption capacities and rates has meanwhile become a standard approach. In this study we discuss and compare the manometric, volumetric and gravimetric methods for recording sorption isotherms and provide an uncertainty analysis. Using published datasets and theoretical considerations, water sorption is discussed in detail as an important mechanisms controlling gas sorption on coal. Most sorption isotherms are still recorded for dry coals, which usually do not represent in-seam conditions, and water present in the coal has a significant control on CBM gas contents and CO2 storage potential. This section is followed by considerations of the interdependence of sorption capacity and coal properties like coal rank, maceral composition or ash content. For assessment of the most suitable coal rank for CO2 storage data on the CO2/CH4 sorption ratio data have been collected and compared with coal rank. Finally, we discuss sorption rates and gas diffusion in the coal matrix as well as the different unipore or bidisperse models used for describing these processes. This review does not include information on low-pressure sorption measurements (BET approach) to characterize pore sizes or pore volume since this would be a review of its own. We also do not consider sorption of gas mixtures since the data base is still limited and measurement techniques are associated with large uncertainties.  相似文献

Geochemical detection of carbon dioxide in dilute aquifers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Background

Carbon storage in deep saline reservoirs has the potential to lower the amount of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere and to mitigate global warming. Leakage back to the atmosphere through abandoned wells and along faults would reduce the efficiency of carbon storage, possibly leading to health and ecological hazards at the ground surface, and possibly impacting water quality of near-surface dilute aquifers. We use static equilibrium and reactive transport simulations to test the hypothesis that perturbations in water chemistry associated with a CO2 gas leak into dilute groundwater are important measures for the potential release of CO2 to the atmosphere. Simulation parameters are constrained by groundwater chemistry, flow, and lithology from the High Plains aquifer. The High Plains aquifer is used to represent a typical sedimentary aquifer overlying a deep CO2 storage reservoir. Specifically, we address the relationships between CO2 flux, groundwater flow, detection time and distance. The CO2 flux ranges from 103 to 2 × 106 t/yr (0.63 to 1250 t/m2/yr) to assess chemical perturbations resulting from relatively small leaks that may compromise long-term storage, water quality, and surface ecology, and larger leaks characteristic of short-term well failure.  相似文献

During 2003–2006, a pilot project of alternating water and CO2 injection was performed on a limited part of the Upper Miocene sandstone oil reservoir of the Ivani? Field. During the test period oil and gas recovery was significantly increased. Additionally 4,440 m3 of oil and 2.26 × 106 m3 of gas were produced. It has initiated further modelling of sandstone reservoirs in the Ivani? Field in order to calculate volumes available for CO2 injection for the purpose of increasing hydrocarbon production from depleted sandstone reservoirs in the entire Croatian part of the Pannonian Basin System. In the first phase, modelling was based on results of laboratory testing on the core samples. It considered applying analogies with world-known projects of CO2 subsurface storage and its usage to enhance hydrocarbon production. In the second phase, reservoir variables were analysed by variograms and subsequently mapped in order to reach lithological heterogeneities and to determine reliable average values of reservoir volumes. Data on porosity, depth and reservoir thickness for the “Gamma 3” and the “Gamma 4” reservoirs, are mapped by the ordinary kriging technique. Calculated volume of CO2 expressed at standard condition which can be injected in the main reservoirs of the Ivani? Field at near miscible conditions is above 15.5 billion m3.  相似文献

Weathering of rocks that regulate the water chemistry of the river has been used to evaluate the CO2 consumption rate which exerts a strong influence on the global climate. The foremost objective of the present research is to estimate the chemical weathering rate (CWR) of the continental water in the entire stretch of Brahmaputra River from upstream to downstream and their associated CO2 consumption rate. To establish the link between the rapid chemical weathering and thereby enhance CO2 drawdown from the atmosphere, the major ion composition of the Brahmaputra River that drains the Himalaya has been obtained. Major ion chemistry of the Brahmaputra River was resolved on samples collected from nine locations in pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons for two cycles: cycle I (2011–2012) and cycle II (2013–2014). The physico-chemical parameters of water samples were analysed by employing standard methods. The Brahmaputra River was characterized by alkalinity, high concentration of Ca2+ and HCO3 ? along with significant temporal variation in major ion composition. In general, it was found that water chemistry of the river was mainly controlled by rock weathering with minor contributions from atmospheric and anthropogenic sources. The effective CO2 pressure (log\({{\text{P}}_{{\text{C}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}}}\)) for pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon has been estimated. The question of rates of chemical weathering (carbonate and silicate) was addressed by using TDS and run-off (mm year?1). It has been found that the extent of CWR is directly dependent on the CO2 consumption rate which may be further evaluated from the perspective of climate change mitigation The average annual CO2 consumption rate of the Brahmaputra River due to silicate and carbonate weathering was found to be 0.52 (×106 mol Km?2 year?1) and 0.55 (×106 mol Km?2 year?1) for cycle I and 0.49 (×106 mol Km?2 year?1) and 0.52 (×106 mol Km?2 year?1) for cycle II, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of other Himalayan rivers. Estimation of CWR of the Brahmaputra River indicates that carbonate weathering largely dominates the water chemistry of the Brahmaputra River.  相似文献

Guangdong is the most economically developed province in China, which is a large CO2 emitter and hence is faced with severe carbon reduction pressures. In this paper, a cost assessment methodology based on scenario analysis is presented. A CO2 source and sink database was built at Guangdong after detailed investigations on the point sources and sedimentary basins. Fifteen transport and five storage scenarios were defined and studied, respectively. Cost estimates based on these scenarios show that during its lifetime, the costs of both transport and storage depend on the amount of CO2 processed. More CO2 being processed will bring down the unit costs of both transport and storage. However, it was observed that there is a cost inflection point between the storage amount of 35.2 and 52.8 Mt/year, which means that as the storage amount increases, the storage cost will first decrease and then increase. Source region S1 in Guangdong has been recommended for an early chance of CO2 storage. Preliminary cost comparisons have shown that the results presented in this study are reasonable, but to improve the cost assessment accuracy of offshore CO2 storage, a methodology based on a CO2 storage design that can integrate local prices needs to be further developed.  相似文献

The delivery of dissolved carbon from rivers to coastal oceans is an important component of the global carbon budget. From November 2013 to December 2014, we investigated freshwater-saltwater mixing effects on dissolved carbon concentrations and CO2 outgassing at six locations along an 88-km-long estuarine river entering the Northern Gulf of Mexico with salinity increasing from 0.02 at site 1 to 29.50 at site 6 near the river’s mouth. We found that throughout the sampling period, all six sites exhibited CO2 supersaturation with respect to the atmospheric CO2 pressure during most of the sampling trips. The average CO2 outgassing fluxes at site 1 through site 6 were 162, 177, 165, 218, 126, and 15 mol m?2 year?1, respectively, with a mean of 140 mol m?2 year?1 for the entire river reach. In the short freshwater river reach before a saltwater barrier, 0.079 × 108 kg carbon was emitted to the atmosphere during the study year. In the freshwater-saltwater mixing zone with wide channels and river lakes, however, a much larger amount of carbon (3.04 × 108 kg) was emitted to the atmosphere during the same period. For the entire study period, the river’s freshwater discharged 0.25 × 109 mol dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and 1.77 × 109 mol dissolved organic carbon (DOC) into the mixing zone. DIC concentration increased six times from freshwater (0.24 mM) to saltwater (1.64 mM), while DOC showed an opposing trend, but to a lesser degree (from 1.13 to 0.56 mM). These findings suggest strong effects of freshwater-saltwater mixing on dissolved carbon dynamics, which should be taken into account in carbon processing and budgeting in the world’s estuarine systems.  相似文献

Deep brine recovery enhanced by supercritical CO2 injection is proposed to be a win–win method for the enhancement of brine production and CO2 storage capacity and security. However, the cross-flow through interlayers under different permeability conditions is not well investigated for a multi-layer aquifer system. In this work, a multi-layer aquifer system with different permeability conditions was built up to quantify the brine production yield and the leakage risk under both schemes of pure brine recovery and enhanced by supercritical CO2. Numerical simulation results show that the permeability conditions of the interlayers have a significant effect on the brine production and the leakage risk as well as the regional pressure. Brine recovery enhanced by supercritical CO2 injection can improve the brine production yield by a factor of 2–3.5 compared to the pure brine recovery. For the pure brine recovery, strong cross-flow through interlayers occurs due to the drastic and extensive pressure drop, even for the relative low permeability (k = 10?20 m2) mudstone interlayers. Brine recovery enhanced by supercritical CO2 can successfully manage the regional pressure and decrease the leakage risk, even for the relative high permeability (k = 10?17 m2) mudstone interlayers. In addition, since the leakage of brine mainly occurs in the early stage of brine production, it is possible to minimize the leakage risk by gradually decreasing the brine production pressure at the early stage. Since the leakage of CO2 occurs in the whole production period and is significantly influenced by the buoyancy force, it may be more effective by adopting horizontal wells and optimizing well placement to reduce the CO2 leakage risk.  相似文献
