The progressive deformation of the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) involved the initiation of a mylonitic foliation, its deformation by three generations of reclined folds and superposition of two later groups of folds, i.e., a group of asymmetric folds with subhorizontal or gently plunging axes and a group of gentle and open, transverse and more or less upright folds. The occurrence of sheath folds and U-shaped deformed lineations indicate that the reclined folds were produced by rotation of fold hinges through large angles. The total displacement along the SSZ was compounded of displacements along numerous mesoscopic shear zones. The cleavages in the shear lenses and the mesoscopic shear zones cannot be distinguished as C and S surfaces. They have the same kinematic significance and were produced by ductile deformation, although there were localized discontinuous displacements along both sets,-of cleavages. A mylonitic foliation had formed before the development of the earliest recognizable folds. Its time of formation and folding could be synchronous, diachronous or partly overlapping in time in the different domains of the SSZ.  相似文献

The E-W running Salem-Attur shear zone demarcates the tectonic boundary between Archaean Dharwar Craton in the north and Proterozoic Southern granulite terrane in the south. This study reveals that the shear zone is a low angle thrust. The thrust zone is around 10 m thick and it merges with the main shear zone along the strike. The thrust is developed on charnockite near Odyarpatti, which is retrograded into schists. Further, it is marked by gently dipping mylonitic foliation and subhorizontal lineation. The S-C fabric, mantled porphyroclasts and intragranular faults indicate northeasterly slip along the thrust. Recumbent shear folds SF1 are developed within the thrust zone. The thrust has been folded by late stage F2 fold which has brought variation in the orientation of the mylonitic foliation from subhorizontal to vertical attitude; the mylonitic lineations have been rotated to subvertical orientation also. Additionally, the F2 crenulations and shear cleavages and intersection lineations are superimposed on the mylonitic fabric. Thrusting along the Salem-Attur shear zone is probably the cause for upliftment of the charnockites to the upper crust. Post-upliftment stage has witnessed brittle deformation in the form of development of shear fractures in NNE-SSW and E-W directions. Pseudotachylites are emplaced along these fractures.  相似文献

Blueschist-facies rocks of the central Seward Peninsula cropout over 8000 km2. Protoliths were Lower Paleozoic-Precambrian(?) shallow-water miogeoclinal sediments that were metamorphosed during the Middle Jurassic. Thermobarometric estimates yield ‘peak’ metamorphic conditions of 10–12 kbar at 460 ± 30°C. Crystallization of blueschist-facies minerals was synkinematic with development of a transposition foliation. This foliation is parallel to lithologic contacts and is axial planar to recumbent mesoscopic isoclinal folds. These folds are refolded by larger scale recumbent tight to isoclinal folds. Both fold sets have hinges parallel to a well-developed N—S stretching lineation. Sheath folds are also present. The long axes of the sheath folds also parallel the stretching lineation. This deformation was non-coaxial as indicated by microstructures and quartz c-axis fabrics. Folds nucleated, then rotated into parallelism with the stretching direction. Kinematic indicators show unequivocal top-to-the-north shear sense, compatible with blueschist formation during mid-Jurassic collision between the Brooks Range continental margin and a N-facing island arc (Yukon-Koyukuk). Convergence of these two plates is believed to have been nearly N—S (in present co-ordinates).  相似文献

Progressive ductile shearing in the Phulad Shear Zone of Rajasthan, India has produced a complex history of folding, with development of planar, non-planar and refolded sheath folds. There are three generations of reclined folds, F1, F2 and F3, with a striping lineation (L1) parallel to the hinge lines of F1. The planar sheath folds of F1 have long subparallel hinge lines at the flanks joining up in hairpin curves at relatively small apices. L1 swerves harmoniously with the curving of F1 hinge line. There is a strong down-dip mineral lineation parallel to the striping lineation in most places, but intersecting it at apices of first generation sheath folds. Both the striping and the mineral lineation are deformed in U-patterns over the hinges of reclined F2 and F3. Folding of axial surfaces and hinge lines of earlier reclined folds by later folds was accompanied by very large stretching and led to the development of non-planar sheaths. The reclined folds of all the three generations were deformed by a group of subhorizontal folds. Each generation of fold initially grew with the hinge line at a very low angle with the Y-axis of bulk non-coaxial strain and was subsequently rotated towards the down-dip direction of maximum stretching. The patterns of deformed lineations indicate that the stretching along the X-direction was extremely large, much in excess of 6000 percent.  相似文献

This quantitative microstructural study deals with textures of quartz domains within a mylonitized metapelite collected near a thrust surface corresponding to the tectonic contact between two metamorphic units, which crop out in the Aspromonte Massif, southern Calabria (Italy). The sample investigated lacks a mesoscopic stretching lineation. Therefore, quartz c-axis fabrics were investigated in two mutually orthogonal thin sections (a) parallel to the quartz rod lineation and perpendicular to the foliation (YZ plane) and (b) perpendicular to the quartz rods and perpendicular to the foliation (XZ plane); the data were generated using classical (manual measurements of quartz c-axis using U-stage) and modern methods (Computer Integrated Polarization microscopy). Both these sections show oblique foliations at ca. 40° from the main shear plane, implying that the actual X direction (stretching lineation that is absent on the mesoscopic scale) must lie between these two sections. Quartz c-axis data from the YZ section when rotated by 90° are similar with those from the XZ section. Hence, the data from the two sections are merged. These data when rotated by an angle of 50° from the direction of quartz rod lineation, gives an asymmetrical pattern indicating top-to-the-North sense of shear. This was confirmed by investigating quartz c-axis patterns in a section striking NS and perpendicular to the foliation. Based on the study it is thus concluded that this method can be used to do kinematic analysis in rocks that are devoid of stretching lineations. Apart from the above, the advantages and disadvantages of the classical and modern methods of quartz c-axis analysis are discussed.  相似文献

The northern fold belt away from the Singhbhum Shear Zone displays a set of folds on bedding. The folds are sub-horizontal with E-W to ESE striking steep axial surfaces. In contrast, the folds in the Singhbhum Shear Zone developed on a mylonitic foliation and have a reclined geometry with northerly trending axes. There is a transitional zone between the two, where the bedding and the cleavage have become parallel by isoclinal folding and two sets of reclined folds have developed by deforming the bedding—parallel cleavage. Southward from the northern fold belt the intensity of deformation increases, the folds become tightened and overturned towards the south while the fold hinges are rotated from the sub-horizontal position to a down-dip attitude. Recognition of the transitional zone and the identification of the overlapping character of deformation in the shear zone and the northern belt enable the formulation of a bulk kinematic model for the area as a whole.  相似文献

Schistose mylonitic rocks in the central part of the Alpine Fault (AF) at Tatare Stream, New Zealand are cut by pervasive extensional (C′) shear bands in a well-understood and young, natural ductile shear zone. The C′ shears cross-cut the pre-existing (Mesozoic—aged) foliation, displacing it ductilely synthetic to late Cenozoic motion on the AF. Using a transect approach, we evaluated changes in geometrical properties of the mm–cm-spaced C′ shear bands across a conspicuous finite strain gradient that intensifies towards the AF. Precise C′ attitudes, C′-foliation dihedral angles, and C′–S intersections were calculated from multiple sectional observations at both outcrop and thin-section scales. Based on these data the direction of ductile shearing in the Alpine mylonite zone during shear band activity is inferred to have trended >20° clockwise (down-dip) of the coeval Pacific-Australia plate motion, indicating some partitioning of oblique-slip motion to yield an excess of “dip-slip” relative to plate motion azimuth, or some up-dip ductile extrusion of the shear zone as a result of transpression, or both. Constant attitude of the mylonitic foliation across the finite strain gradient indicates this planar fabric element was parallel to the shear zone boundary (SZB). Across all examined parts of the shear zone, the mean dihedral angle between the C′ shears and the mylonitic foliation (S) remains a constant 30 ± 1° (1σ). The aggregated slip accommodated on the C′ shear bands contributed only a small bulk shear strain across the shear zone (γ = 0.6–0.8). Uniformity of per-shear slip on C′ shears with progression into the mylonite zone across the strain gradient leads us to infer that these shears exhibited a strain-hardening rheology, such that they locked up at a finite shear strain (inside C′ bands) of 12–15. Shear band boudins and foliation boudins both record extension parallel to the SZB, as do the occurrence of extensional shear band sets that have conjugate senses of slip. We infer that shear bands nucleated on planes of maximum instantaneous shear strain rate in a shear zone with Wk < 0.8, and perhaps even as low as <0.5. The C′ shear bands near the AF formed in a thinning/stretching shear zone, which had monoclinic symmetry, where the direction of shear-zone stretching was parallel to the shearing direction.  相似文献

Asymmetric pressure shadows (APS) on both sides of a rigid porphyroclast are commonly observed in mylonites along the Median Tectonic Line (MTL) in Japan. It is one of the most noticeable asymmetric microstructures, showing that the porphyroclasts have rotated during non-coaxial laminar flow in a ductile shear zone. The shadow domains are filled with recrystallized quartz and K-feldspar. Excepting APS, various asymmetric microstructures in the mylonites indicate a sinistral sense of displacement throughout the ductile shear zone along the MTL.Based on the shape analysis of APS in XZ section (parallel to the mylonitic lineation and normal to the mylonitic foliation), the following results were obtained: (1) the relative position of the APS with respect to a porphyroclast is not a reliable criterion for deducing the sense of shear; and (2) the drag angle (β) of the shadow boundaries with respect to the mylonitic foliation in each quartered domain is diagnostic of the sense of shear; when the shearing is sinistral, β in upper right- and lower left-hand side of a porphyroclast is larger than β in upper left- and lower right-hand side, and vice versa for dextral shearing. These results demonstrate that the drag patterns of APS around porphyroclasts in mylonites are highly reliable indicators for the determination of the sense of shear.  相似文献

Lineations within mylonites exhumed in the hanging wall of New Zealand's active Alpine Fault zone have a complicated relationship to contemporary plate kinematics. The shear zone is triclinic and macroscopic object lineations are not usually parallel to the simple shear direction, despite high total simple shear strains (γ ≥ 150). This is mostly because the lineations are inherited from pre-mylonitic fabrics, and have not been rotated into parallelism with the mylonitic stretching direction (which pitches c. 44° in the fault plane). Furthermore, some lineations have been variably rotated depending on whether they are present in shear bands or microlithons, which accommodated bulk strains with different vorticities. Total strains required to obtain parallelism between the finite maximum principal stretching direction calculated from transpression models and these mylonitic lineations, are pure shear stretch, S1 ∼ 3.5; simple shear 11.7 < γ < 150. The observations and numerical models also show that linear features are not rotated much during simple shear because they initially lie within the shear plane, and that inherited fabric components may not be destroyed until very high simple shear strains have been attained.  相似文献

Mylonites derived largely from granite, pegmatite and sedimentary quartzite occupy a 500 m thick, gently N-dipping zone along the northern flank of the Coyote Mountains, west of Tucson, in southeastern Arizona. The quartzite mylonites are exceptionally well developed and occur as discrete layers and lenses, 2–5 m thick, within yet thicker, boudinaged, sill-like lenses of mylonitic pegmatite. Mylonitization took place in the Tertiary within a normal-slip ductile shear zone. The shear zones formed in response to regional extension of continental crust. Extension is along a north-south line, and N-directed sense of shear is revealed by mica fish, oblique foliations in dynamically recrystallized quartz aggregates, and asymmetric quartz c-axis fabrics. The microstructures and c-axis fabrics, taken together, disclose that ductile and brittle deformation was achieved by intense, penetrative, non-coaxial laminar flow dominated by progressive simple shear.  相似文献

Internal regions of orogenic belts may be characterized by an alignment of fold axes with mineral elongation lineations. This relationship is commonly interpreted as representing progressive tightening and rotation towards the shear direction of early buckle folds, the hinges of which were initiated orthogonal to this direction. Detailed structural analysis of lower amphibolite facies Dalradian metasediments of the Ballybofey (fold) Nappe, north-west Ireland, shows that an intense S3 schistosity is developed axial planar to mesoscopic and minor F3 folds. In areas of low D3 strain, F3 fold axes plunge gently towards the north-east, whereas in regions of greater strain plunges are towards the south-east subparallel to the constant mineral lineation. Minor folds which initiated at angles of 70–80° from the mineral lineation subsequently rotated towards the shear direction in a consistent clockwise sense. Progressive and variable non-coaxial deformation oblique to the original mean F3 orientation has resulted in a unimodal distribution pattern of fold axes. Analysis of the angular rotation of fold axes enables estimates of the bulk shear strain to be evaluated and models of progressive deformation to be assessed.

An integrated approach to resolve the kinematics of the controversial Achankovil Shear Zone (AKSZ) has been attempted involving remote sensing data, shaded relief topo-maps, ground details of lithology and mesoscopic structures. An excellent correlation of structural trends exists on all scales of observation. The AKSZ is distinctly defined by NW–SE trending foliation fabrics with steep dips to southwest. The adjacent Madurai block and Trivandrum block show contrasting lithological and structural characteristics as shown in structural cross-sections.The mesoscopic structural studies reveal the presence of sub-horizontal stretching lineations, asymmetric structures like S–C′ fabrics, porphyroclasts, ‘S’ shaped folds and shear bands confirming the strike-slip component of shear along AKSZ. The deformation undergone by the AKSZ could be described in terms of an initial dextral deformation — D1, reactivated and superimposed by sinistral kinematics — D2, which is also supported by megascopic structural interpretation of remote sensing data. The megascopic structural interpretation of AKSZ displays en-echelon pattern of lineaments with right overstepping arrangement, which can be interpreted as an evidence of the latest sinistral transpressional deformation.  相似文献

Phulad Shear Zone (PSZ) of Delhi Fold Belt in Rajasthan is a northeasterly striking ductile shear zone with a well developed mylonitic foliation (035/70E) and a downdip stretching lineation. The deformation in the PSZ has developed in a transpressional regime with thrusting sense of movement. The northeastern unit, i.e., the hanging wall contains a variety of rocks namely calc-silicates, pelites and amphibolites and the southwestern unit, i.e., the footwall unit contains only granitic rocks. Systematic investigation of the granites of the southwestern unit indicate a gradual change in the intensity of deformation from a distance of about 1 km west of the shear zone to the shear zone proper. The granite changes from weakly deformed granite to a mylonite/ultramylonite as we proceed towards the PSZ. The weakly deformed granite shows a crude foliation with the same attitude of mylonitic foliation of the PSZ. Microscopic study reveals the incipient development of C and S fabric with angle between C and S varying from 15 ° to 24 °. The small angle between the C and S fabric in the least deformed granite variety indicates that the deformation has strong pure shear component. At a distance of about 1 m away from the PSZ, there is abrupt change in the intensity of deformation. The granite becomes intensely foliated with a strong downdip lineation and the rock becomes a true mylonite. In mesoscopic scale, the granite shows stretched porphyroclasts in both XZ and YZ sections indicating a flattening type of deformation. The angle between the C and S fabric is further reduced and finally becomes nearly parallel. In most places, S fabric is gradually replaced by C fabric. Calculation of sectional kinematic vorticity number ( Wn) from the protomylonitic and mylonite/ultramylonite granites varies from 0.3 ± 0.03 to 0.55 ± 0.04 indicating a strong component of pure shear. The similarity of the geometry of structures in the PSZ and the granites demonstrates that the deformation of the two units is broadly synchronous and the deformation in both the units is transpressional.  相似文献

New data suggest syn-convergent extrusion and polyphase tectonics followed by late Variscan extension in the Strudengau area of the southern Moldanubian zone in Austria. The tectonic history can be summarized as follows: (1) The oldest ductile event is observed in HT/LP metamorphic pelitic gneisses, which preserve E-dipping foliation planes (D1-fabric) with NW–SE-trending lineations. (2) The overlying gneisses record HT/HP conditions with decompression-induced anatexis in the central part of the domain. These gneisses exhibit N–S trending, horizontal lineations along steep-dipping foliation planes (D2-fabric) crosscutting the D1-fabric of the pelitic gneisses. Along the margin, these rocks have been strongly mylonitized under amphibolite facies conditions (D2). D2 is interpreted as a significant vertical shear zone, which juxtaposes the HT/LP rocks against the orogenic lower crust. (3) Lastly, the whole area is overprinted by localized shear zones (D3-fabric) with top-to-the-NW kinematics. This newly discovered Strudengau shearing event is associated with isoclinal folding that possesses axial planes parallel to the mylonitic foliation and fold axes parallel to the stretching lineations. Initial mylonitization occurred under greenschist facies, representing the latest ductile event of the Strudengau area. The new geochronological data presented here indicate a narrow time frame (c. 323–318 Ma) for the D3 deformation. Therefore, this event is contemporaneous with the intrusion of the granites of the South Bohemian Batholith (330–310 Ma). The nearby South Bohemian Batholith and generally steep dyke swarms in the Strudengau area and to the north trend in a NE–SW preferred orientation, interpreted to be D3-synkinematic magmatism. In a regional context, the NW–SE stretching during D3 together with the synkinematic intrusion of dykes is associated with late orogenic extension in the Austrian Moldanubian Zone. Kinematic data of brittle normal faults and tension gashes are consistent with NW–SE-oriented extension under cooler conditions.  相似文献

There is a large ductile shear zone, 2 km wide and more than 3SO km long, in the South Qilian Mountains, western China. It is composed of volcanic, granitic and calcareous mylonites. The microstructures of the ductile shear zone show nearly E-W extending subvertical foliation, horizontal and oblique stretching lineations, shearing sense from sinis-tral to oblique sinistral strike-slip from east to west, "A" type folds and abundant granitic veins. Measured lattice preferred orientations (LPOs) of the mylonitic and recrystallized quartz of the granitic mylonite in the west segment suggest a strong LPO characterized by the dominant slip systems {1010} formed at high temperature (>650℃). K-feldspar of the mylonite shows an 39Ar/40Ar high-temperature plateau age of 243.3±1.3 Ma, and biotite, 250.5±0.5 Ma, which represent the formation age of the ductile shear zone. The 39Ar/40Ar plateau ages of 169.7±0.3 Ma and 160.6±0.1 Ma and the 39Ar/40Ar isochron ages of 166.99±2.37 Ma and 160.6±0.1 Ma of biot  相似文献

In the history of superposed deformations of the iron formations at the western border of the Kolar Gold Field in S India, an important event was the successive growth of broadly coaxial plane noncylindrical folds in course of a progressive deformation concomitant with development of ductile mesoscopic shear zones. The noncylindrical folds were initiated as active folds by the creation of a buckling instability at successive stages on newly developed foliation surfaces. The nucleation of noncylindrical folds and the subsequent axial-plane folding of the tightened mature folds are explained by the mechanical inhomogeneity of the rocks and the heterogeneous character of strain. The correlation between increasing tightness and increasing noncylindricity of the folds indicates that the initial curvatures of hinge lines were accentuated by an extension parallel to the subhorizontal stretching lineation. From the patterns of deformed lineations over folds of varying tightnesses, it is concluded that the passive accentuation of hinge-line curvatures was mostly achieved when the folds had already become isoclinal or very tight.  相似文献

This study highlights the usefulness of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility data from a deformed granitoid in deciphering its kinematic evolution vis-à-vis shear zone. Data are presented from the Chakradharpur Granitoid (CKPG) that lies to the north of the northerly dipping, ENE–WSW striking Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ; eastern India). Whilst the foliation recorded in the field in some parts of the granitoid is parallel to the SSZ, the magnetic foliation is N54°E/90° (mean orientation). It is suggested that the magnetic fabric provides a window into an evolutionary stage prior to the final shearing/thrusting event, the evidence of which is preserved on the mesoscopic scale. It is envisaged that during the initial stages of deformation there was simple shear along the evolving SSZ that resulted in sinistral strike-slip movement; the vorticity axis at this stage was steeply plunging and sense of rotation was anticlockwise. Space was generated in a direction ∼N25°E (perpendicular to maximum-Instantaneous Stretching Axis) into which CKPG emplaced synchronously with regional deformation and evolving SSZ. With continued deformation, there was thrusting along the SSZ. The vorticity axis flipped to a sub-horizontal orientation, thus leading to the development of down-dip stretching lineations and sheath folds within the SSZ. However, at the same time, the vorticity axis responsible for fabric evolution within the syntectonically crystallizing/cooling CKPG was steeply plunging with clockwise rotation. The magnetic foliation (mean orientation N54°E/90°) developed during the final stage of syntectonic crystallization. However, deformation in the region and thrusting along the SSZ continued even after the CKPG had fully crystallized and solidified, which led to the development of the ENE–WSW striking mesoscopic foliation that is parallel with the SSZ. We propose that the angle between the magnetic foliation and the SSZ/foliation recorded in the field, enables to decipher the kinematic vorticity number of flow responsible for fabric evolution of the CKPG. It is concluded that transpression was an important mechanism, and during regional deformation, whilst the SSZ developed structures by dominantly simple shear, the CKPG underwent dominantly pure shear.  相似文献
