The heights of formation of a number of extreme ultraviolet lines in active regions have been measured from OSO-IV spectroheliograms. Using the Lyman continuum at 2000 km above the white light limb as a reference, we find heights for Hei, Heii, Ciii, Niii, Oiv, Ovi, Neviii, Mgx, Sixii, Fexv and Fexvi that are in approximate agreement with models based on analysis of EUV emission intensities. The height of Cii is anomalously high. The accuracy of measurement is typically about 2000 km. The data suggest that the transition zone is less steep than calculated from EUV emission intensities; however, higher resolution observations are necessary to resolve the discrepancy.  相似文献

The fine structure of the Evershed effect was studied using spectrograms obtained on 3 July 1969 at the Pulkovo Observatory. The results of the study of Fei and Cai lines show that the outward motion in the penumbra is concentrated only in dark filaments. It is supposed that interfilamentary spaces are parts of the photosphere not covered by dark filaments. The velocity variation along a few dark filaments shows that maximum velocity is at a distance 0.8 Rs from the center of the sunspot. The mean velocity in the interfilamentary elements is of the same order as that in the photosphere directly adjoining the penumbra. The results of measurement in Ti ii, Fe ii and CH lines show that in the colder upper part of the penumbra (CH) the velocity is greater than the velocity measured in the deeper layers (Feii and Tiii). The mean velocity at the outer boundaries of the dark filaments (Tii) is 1.5–2.0 km/s.  相似文献

Some high-dispersion spectrograms of CH Cygni taken in epochs at which only the M6 spectrum is visible and after the explosions of June 1967 and July 1968 have been studied. The strong negative radial velocities of the Caii chromospheric absorptions and the turbulent motions broadening the emission, lines ofHi, Hei, Feii, [Feii] prove that mass is lost from the star at a rate of the order of 10–8 solar masses per year. Arguments are given in favour of the hypothesis that CH Cygni is a close binary composed of an M giant and a blue unstable subdwarf.Presented at the Trieste Colloquium on Mass Loss from Stars, September 12–16, 1968.  相似文献

The radial velocity variations of the components of someOii, Siiii, andNii lines in P Cyg spectrum are investigated during the period 1981–1983. All data are analyzed in terms of a model which implies a multiple ejection of shells in the stellar wind. It is shown that the observed phenomenon is not periodic, but it occurs on a time-scale between 110 and 160 days with the most frequently observed length of the cycle of about 110 days. The shells move away from the star with an acceleration that is greater at low velocities than at high ones. The radial velocity variations ofOii, Siiii, andNii lines agree with these of hydrogen lines if we assume velocity and excitation condition differences inside the shell.  相似文献

Nova Vul 1968 No. 2 (Kohoutek) has been studied on Asiago material obtained before and after the announcement of discovery. The nova, fainter than 20 magnitude at minimum, brightened on July 16. The maximum (9.25 B) was reached on July 19. From the light curve the star can be classified as a normal fast nova. Objective prism spectra taken near maximum display the presence of absorption systems with radial velocities from –550 to –2200 km/sec. On slit spectrograms obtained at the end of October, the nova was found in the nebular stage with wide emission bands of H, Hei, Heii,Nii,Niii and forbidden lines ofOiii,Nii,Oi. The degree of excitation is slowly increasing.The nova is strongly reddened by interstellar absorption.  相似文献

A detailed photometric comparison between a Mgii K filterheliogram and a nearly simultaneous Caii K spectroheliogram is presented. The comparison shows a close correspondence in both location and intensity of the bright features on the Sun with a correlation coefficient of 0.92 ± 0.02 between the Mgii and the Caii intensities in active regions.A small flare is most likely observed in the Mgii heliogram giving a substantial contribution to the recorded intensity.We also estimate theoretically the heights in the solar atmosphere at which the Mgii K and Caii K lines are formed. Taking into account the general shape of the line profiles and the different passbands used in the recordings we arrive at an average height of formation of 1700–1900 km above the photosphere for these particular heliograms.  相似文献

The rare-earth ions cerium ii, lanthanum ii, dysprosium ii, and additionally zirconium ii and iron ii, are seen as weak emission features in the wings of the solar Ca ii H and K lines. The strength of these emission lines increases on the disk toward the limb. We provide recent high-resolution observations at disk center and at the limb. The identity of the weak lines is re-worked. We point out the unique role of eclipse spectra in distinguishing between the photospheric and chromospheric origins of emission lines. It is then demonstrated from our full disk (Sun-as-a-Star) and center disk archives, 1974 – 2010, that no activity cycle related signal is evident (save for the H and K lines themselves).  相似文献

In this paper we study the main features of the far UV spectrum of the binary star AX Mon, observed with the IUE satellite at phase 0.568.Ions indicating a large range of ionization stages, going fromCi,Oi,Ni toSiv,Civ,Nv are present.The spectrum is dominated by shell absorption lines of Feii, Feiii, Siiii,Cii, Alii, Mgii and Niii.Two satellite components are clearly indicated in all these lines except for Niii which presents only one. Their mean velocities are +10±5 km s–1, –75±10 km s–1, and –260±15 km s–1.Red emission wings are observed in the Mgii resonant doublet at 2800 Å, which shows a P Cygni profile. Each of the absorption lines of the Mgii doublet is formed by a narrow component, which is blended with the Mgii interstellar line and a broad component, which shows a complex structure.Broad and asymmetrical profiles are observed for the Siiv,Civ, andNv resonance lines with blue edge velocities about –700±30 km s–1.  相似文献

We have studied the spatial distribution of XUV emission in the 14 August, 1973 loop prominence observed with the NRL spectroheliograph on Skylab. The loop prominence consists of two large loops and is observed in lines from ions with temperatures ranging from 5 × 104 K to 3 × 106 K. The loops seen in low temperature (106K) lines such as from He ii, Ne vii, Mg vii, Mg viii, and Si viii are systematically displaced from loops seen in higher temperature lines such as from Si xii, Fe xv, and Fe xvi. The cross section of the loop, particularly in cooler lines is nearly constant along the loop. For hotter loops in Si xii, Fe xv, and Fe xvi, however, emission at the top of the loop is more intense and extended than that near the footpoints, which makes the loops appear wider at the top.There is no evidence that the 14 August loop prominence consists of a cooler core surrounded by a hot sheath as in some active region and sunspot loops reported by Foukal (1975, 1976). Rather, the observed spatial displacement between cooler and hotter loops suggest that the 14 August loop prominence is composed of many magnetic flux tubes, each with its own temperature.Ball Corporation. The concept of homology, introduced by Ellison, Mc Kenna, and Rceid (1960) for optical flares, can be extended to flare-associated radio events. Successive flares within the same centre of activity sometimes produce radio events that are remarkably similar. The similarity amounts to the fact that they extend over about the same range(s) in frequency, producing at each frequency responses of comparable intensity and duration. On some occasions the intensity curves at individual frequencies show even detailed resemblance. The occurrence of homologous radio events is commonly restricted to periods of less than 48 hours.Without being homologous, radio events that occur in the same centre of activity may present a common characteristic that is typical for that centre. Two such characteristics are (1) the production of radio responses at centimetric, decimetric and metric frequencies, and (2) the impulsiveness of microwave outbursts. I briefly describe a simple routine for emission-line profile fitting by Gaussian curves or Gauss–Hermite series. The profit (line-profile fitting) routine represent a new alternative for use in fits data cubes, as the ones from Integral Field Spectroscopy or Fabry–Pérot Interferometry, and may be useful to better study the emission-line flux distributions and gas kinematics in distinct astrophysical objects, such as the central regions of galaxies and star forming regions. Data obtained by the OSO-7 spectroheliograph on strong XUV lines of five, different Fe ions from the outer equatorial corona are presented. Interpretation of the data with a spherically symmetric model atmosphere gives average ion abundances for lines of sight at 0.3R from the limb. Fe xvi is usually more abundant than Fe xv, xiv, xii and ix, but there are times when Fe xii is more abundant than the other ions. The deviation of measured relative abundances of Fe xii, xiv, and xvi from predictions of ionization equilibrium at one temperature seems to indicate that there are appreciable temperature variations along lines of sight. Element abundances are very uncertain since they appear to depend so heavily on likely but unknown density irregularities along lines of sight.  相似文献

The rapid dissipation of flare energy has been observed in the transition-zone line of C iv at 1548.2 Å using the University of Colorado spectrometer aboard OSO-8. Impulsive brightenings have been resolved with characteristic risetimes as low as 3.5 s. One event is analyzed in detail, in which it is inferred that the electron density is greater than 2 × 1011 cm–3 at T = 60 000 K, and that the flare energy is deposited at a rate of 2 ergs cm–3 s–1 or greater. The temporal behavior of the intensity at the center of the C iv line is consistent with a non-equilibrium ionization of C iii through C v. If this event is a result of the multiple tearing mode instability as the primary energy release mechanism, then the observations indicate a pre-flare magnetic field of about 175 G.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

O vi ( = 1032 Å) profiles have been measured in and above a filament at the limb, previously analyzed in H i, Mg ii, Ca ii resonance lines (Vial et al., 1979). They are compared to profiles measured at the quiet Sun center and at the quiet Sun limb.Absolute intensities are found to be about 1.55 times larger than above the quiet limb at the same height (3); at the top of the prominence (15 above the limb) one finds a maximum blue shift and a minimum line width. The inferred non-thermal velocity (29 km s–1) is about the same as in cooler lines while the approaching line-of-sight velocity (8 km s–1) is lower than in Ca ii lines.The O vi profile recorded 30 above the limb outside the filament is wider (FWHM = 0.33 Å). It can be interpreted as a coronal emission of O vi ions with a temperature of about 106 K, and a non-thermal velocity (NTV) of 49 km s–1. This NTV is twice the NTV of quiet Sun center O vi profiles. Lower NTV require higher temperatures and densities (as suggested by K-coronameter measurements). Computed emission measures for this high temperature regime agree with determinations from disk intensities of euv lines.  相似文献

The Hii regions S254, 255 and 257 in the constellation of Orion are close together on the sky and appear like a triple object. Fabry-Pérot radial velocities of the Hii regions as well asUBV photo-electric magnitudes of their exciting stars are obtained. The data show that (1) all three nebulae are at a distance of 2.5 kpc; (2) an excess extinction is observed in S255 and S257 while S254 shows no excess extinction; (3) S255, identified as an IR and a molecular source, is the youngest object of the group. It is concluded that the three Hii regions are at different evolutionary stages.  相似文献

Nine of the cataloguedHii regions in the southern hemisphere have been selected for correlation with neutral hydrogen observed at the 21 cm line.The radiotelescope used for theHi line observations was the 30 m Carnegie telescope of the Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía and the 56 channel, 10 KHz bandwidth receiver.The observational results are analyzed for eachHii region. They are compared with previous optical and radio results.For three of the nine observed regions it has been possible to find neutral hydrogen in absorption with similar velocities. In three cases absorption has been found but no component at theHii region velocity is seen. The EUV emission spectra in the wavelength range 110–1900 Å of the 5 September 1973 flare observed with the NRL slit spectrograph on Skylab are studied. The results are: (1) The chromospheric and transition-zone lines are greatly enhanced during the flare. In particular, the allowed lines are enhanced more than the intersystem lines. The Ni ii and P ii lines show the greatest enhancement with a factor of 800 increase in intensity. Other lines such as O i, C i, Si iii, S iii, S iv, O iv, O v, and N v show increases in intensity 10–100 times during the flare. (2) The chromospheric lines, although greatly enhanced during the flare, maintain their sharp and gaussian profiles and are not appreciably broadened. The transition zone lines, on the other hand, show a red-shifted component during the initial phase of the flare. The deduced downward velocity in the transition zone is 50 km s–1. In addition, there are large turbulent mass motions. The downward mass motion is probably caused by the pressure imbalance between the flare hot plasma at 13 × 106 K and the cooler plasma at 105 K. (3) The density of the 105 K flare plasma, as deduced from density-sensitive lines, is greater than 1012 cm-3. The depth of the 105 K plasma in the flare transition zone is only of the order of 0.1 km, giving a steep temperature gradient. Consideration of the energy balance between the conductive flux and the radiative energy losses shows that, indeed, the high density in the transition zone requires that its thickness be very small. We have obtained and analyzed UBVRI CCD frames of the young, 4–10 Myr, open cluster NGC 3293 and the surrounding field in order to study its stellar content and determine the cluster’s IMF. We found significantly fewer lower mass stars, M≤2.5M , than expected. This is particularly so if a single age for the cluster of 4.6 Myr is adopted as derived from fitting evolutionary models to the upper main sequence. Some intermediate-mass stars near the main sequence in the HR diagram imply an age for the cluster of about 10 Myr. When compared with the Scalo (The stellar initial mass function. ASP conference series, vol. 24, p. 201, 1998) IMF scaled to the cluster IMF in the intermediate mass range, 2.5≤M/M ≤8.0 where there is good agreement, the high mass stars have a distinctly flatter IMF, indicating an over abundance of these stars, and there is a sharp turnover in the distribution at lower masses. The radial density distribution of cluster stars in the massive and intermediate mass regimes indicate that these stars are more concentrated to the cluster core whereas the lower-mass stars show little concentration. We suggest that this is evidence supporting the formation of massive stars through accretion and/or coagulation processes in denser cluster cores at the expense of the lower mass proto-stars. R.W. Climax coronagraph observations of the accessible Fe lines, as well as the Caxv 5694 line at the time of the 1962 total eclipse, are analyzed. The spectra show that the ionization equilibrium of iron is not substantially changed in an intense coronal condensation, at least for the stages x through xv. The only exception is Fexv 7059, for which density effects are important. The stability of the ionization distribution is explained by the dynamic nature of the Fe ionization, with ions entering on the high side (Fexvi and up) due to rapid heating and then cooling through the visible stages.Comparison of the ionization distributions inferred from radiative and collisional excitation of the iron lines shows that the excitation must be by collisions everywhere at the heights examined (less than 50 000 km).The iron abundance in the corona is found to be 10–4 that of hydrogen, but this figure would be reduced by the amount of cyclic excitation.The peak electron density in the condensation is 8 × 109, and the peak value of the 5694 line/ continuum ratio is 2.5, in good agreement with calculations by Chevalier and Lambert.The ratio of the infrared Fexiii lines is measured along the limb and found to vary with electron density as expected, the 10 747/10 798 ratio is 7 or less at densities much below 109 and saturates at a value of 2 for densities above that amount.  相似文献

The radial velocity and profile variations of UV lines of the shell star Tau have been examined in the IUE spectra obtained in 1978–1982. The neutral atoms, and once or twice-ionized ions (exceptCii, Aliii, Siiii resonance lines) follow the same velocity variations as in the visual spectra, while the Siiv andCiv resonance lines show a constant negative velocity (–50 km s–1 at the core). The Aliii,Cii resonance lines and probably Feiii (mult.
