We present CCD BVI photometry of the old open cluster Berkeley 21, one of the most distant clusters in the Galactic anticentre direction, and possibly the lowest metallicity object in the open clusters sample. Its position and metal abundance make it very important for the study of the Galactic disc. Using the synthetic colour–magnitude diagram method, we estimate values for the distance modulus ( m  − M )0 = 13.4–13.6, reddening E ( B  −  V ) = 0.74–0.78 (with possible differential absorption), and age = 2.2–2.5 Gyr.  相似文献

We report on VI charge-coupled device photometry of two fields centred in the region of the open clusters NGC 6404 and 6583 down to   V = 22.0  . So far these clusters have never been studied, and we provide for the first time estimates of their fundamental parameters, namely, radial extent, age, distance and reddening. We find that the radius of NGC 6404 is 2.0 arcmin, as previously proposed, while the radius of NGC 6583 is 1.0 arcmin, significantly lower than previous estimates. Both clusters turn out to be of intermediate age (0.5–1.0 Gyr old), and located inside the solar ring, at a Galactocentric distance of about 6.5 kpc. These results make these objects very interesting targets for spectroscopic follow-up to measure their metallicity. In fact, they might allow us to enlarge by more than 1 kpc the baseline of the radial abundance gradient in the Galactic disc towards the Galactic Centre direction. This baseline is currently rather narrow especially for clusters of this age.  相似文献

We present a UBV CCD photometric study of four open clusters, NGC 7245, King 9, IC 166 and King 13, located between   l = 90°  and 135°. All are embedded in a rich Galactic field. NGC 7245 and King 9 are close together in the sky and have similar reddenings. The distances and ages are: NGC 7245, 3.8 ± 0.35 kpc and 400 Myr; King 9 (the most distant cluster in this quadrant), 7.9 ± 1.1 kpc and 3.0 Gyr. King 13 is 3.1 ± 0.3 kpc distant and 300 Myr old. King 9 and IC 166 (4.8 ± 0.5 kpc distant and 1 Gyr old) may be metal-poor clusters  ( Z = 0.008)  , as estimated from isochrone fitting. The average value of the distance of young clusters from the Galactic plane in the above longitude range and beyond 2 kpc (−47 ± 16 pc, for 64 clusters) indicates that the young disc bends towards the southern latitudes.  相似文献

The first charge-coupled device   UBV ( RI )C  photometric study in the area of the doubtful open cluster NGC 2129 is presented. Photometry of a field offset 15 arcmin northwards is also provided, to probe the Galactic disc population towards the cluster. Using star counts, proper motions from the UCAC2 catalogue, colour–magnitude and colour–colour diagrams, we demonstrate that NGC 2129 is a young open cluster. The cluster radius is 2.5 arcmin, and across this region we find evidence of significant differential reddening, although the reddening law seems to be normal towards its direction. Updated estimates of the cluster fundamental parameters are provided. The mean reddening is found to be   E ( B − V ) = 0.80 ± 0.08  and the distance modulus is  ( m − M )0= 11.70 ± 0.30  . Hence, NGC 2129 is located at 2.2 ± 0.2 kpc from the Sun inside the Local spiral arm. The age derived from 37 photometrically selected members is estimated to be approximately 10 Myr. These stars are used to provide new estimates of the cluster absolute proper-motion components.  相似文献

We present new B ,  V and R linear polarimetric observations for 61 stars towards the region of the young open cluster NGC 654. In this study we found evidence for the presence of at least two layers of dust along the line of sight to the cluster. The distances to the two dust layers are estimated to be ∼200 pc and ∼1 kpc which are located much closer to the Sun than the cluster (∼2.4 kpc). Both the dust layers have their local magnetic field orientation nearly parallel to the direction of the Galactic plane. The foreground dust layer is found to have a ring morphology with the central hole coinciding with the centre of the cluster. The foreground dust grains are suggested to be mainly responsible for both the observed differential reddening and the polarization towards the cluster.  相似文献

We present the first BVI CCD photometry to   V = 22.0  of four fields centred on the region of the southern Galactic star clusters Ruprecht 61, Czernik 32, NGC 2225 and 2262 and of four displaced control fields. These clusters have never been studied before, and we provide for the first time estimates of their fundamental parameters, specifically radial extent, age, distance and reddening. We find that the four clusters are all of intermediate age (around 1 Gyr), close to the Sun and possess lower than solar metal abundance.  相似文献

Stellar photometry derived from the INT/WFC Photometric Hα Survey (IPHAS) of the Northern Galactic plane can be used to identify large, reliable samples of A0–A5 stars. For every A-type star, so identified, it is also possible to derive individual reddening and distance estimates, under the assumption that most selected objects are on or near the main sequence, at a mean absolute r ' magnitude of 1.5–1.6. This study presents the method for obtaining such samples and shows that the known reddenings and distances to the open clusters NGC 7510 and NGC 7790 are successfully recovered. A sample of over 1000 A-type stars is then obtained from IPHAS data in the magnitude range  13.5 < r ' < 20  from the region of sky including the massive northern OB association Cyg OB2. An analysis of these data reveals a concentration of ∼200 A stars over an area about a degree across, offset mainly to the south of the known 1–3 Myr old OB stars in Cyg OB2: their dereddened r ' magnitudes fall in the range 11.8–12.5. These are consistent with a ∼7 Myr old stellar population at distance modulus DM = 10.8, or with an age of ∼5 Myr at DM = 11.2. The number of A-type stars found in this clustering alone is consistent with a lower limit to the cluster mass of  ∼104 M  .  相似文献

We present a photometric study of the neglected open cluster Berkeley 53. We derived its fundamental parameters, such as the age, the interstellar reddening, and the distance from the Sun, based on BV photometry combined with near‐infrared JHKS data. The structure and the mass function of the cluster were also studied and the total number of members and the total mass were estimated. The cluster was found to be a rich and massive stellar system, located in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way, 3.1 ± 0.1 kpc from the Sun. Its age exceeds 1 Gy but it seems tobe very young in the context of its dynamical evolution. The analysis of the two‐color diagrams and color‐magnitude diagrams indicates that the cluster is significantly reddened. However, both methods resulted in different values of E (BV), i.e. 1.21 ± 0.04 and 1.52 ± 0.01, respectively. This discrepancy suggests the presence of an abnormal interstellar extinction law toward the cluster (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The study of old open clusters outside the solar circle can bring constraints on formation scenarios of the outer disc. In particular, accretion of dwarf galaxies has been proposed as a likely mechanism in the area. We use BVI photometry for determining fundamental parameters of the faint open cluster ESO 92-SC05. Colour–magnitude diagrams are compared with Padova isochrones, in order to derive age, reddening and distance. We derive a reddening   E ( B − V ) = 0.17  , and an old age of ∼6.0 Gyr. It is one of the rare open clusters known to be older than 5 Gyr. A metallicity of   Z ∼ 0.004  or  [M/H]∼−0.7  is found. The rather low metallicity suggests that this cluster might be the result of an accretion episode of a dwarf galaxy.  相似文献

It is textbook knowledge that open clusters are conspicuous members of the thin disk of our Galaxy, but their role as contributors to the stellar population of the disk was regarded as minor. Starting from a homogenous stellar sky survey, the ASCC‐2.5, we revisited the population of open clusters in the solar neighbourhood from scratch. In the course of this enterprise we detected 130 formerly unknown open clusters, constructed volume‐ and magnitude‐limited samples of clusters, re‐determined distances, motions, sizes, ages, luminosities and masses of 650 open clusters. We derived the present‐day luminosity and mass functions of open clusters (not the stellar mass function in open clusters), the cluster initial mass function CIMF and the formation rate of open clusters. We find that open clusters contributed around 40 percent to the stellar content of the disk during the history of our Galaxy. Hence, open clusters are important building blocks of the Galactic disk (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Charge-coupled device (CCD) photometry in the Johnson V , Kron–Cousins I and Washington CMT 1 systems is presented in the field of the poorly known open cluster NGC 2627. Four independent Washington abundance indices yield a mean cluster metallicity of  [Fe/H]=−0.12 ± 0.08  , which is compatible with the existence of a radial gradient in the Galactic disc. The resultant colour–magnitude diagrams indicate that the cluster is an intermediate-age object of 1.4 Gyr. Based on the best fits of the Geneva group's isochrones to the ( V , V − I ) and  ( T 1, C − T 1)  diagrams, we estimate   E ( V − I ) = 0.25 ± 0.05  and   V − MV = 11.80 ± 0.25  for  log  t = 9.15  , and   E ( C − T 1) = 0.23 ± 0.07  and   T 1− M T 1= 11.85 ± 0.25  for  log  t = 9.10  , respectively, assuming solar metal content. The derived reddening value   E ( C − T 1)  implies   E ( B − V ) = 0.12 ± 0.07  and a distance from the Sun of  2.0 ± 0.4 kpc  . Using the WEBDA data base and the available literature, we re-examined the overall properties of all the open clusters with ages between 0.6 and 2.5 Gyr. We identified peaks of cluster formation at 0.7–0.8, 1.0–1.1, 1.6–1.7 and 2.0–2.1 Gyr, separated by relative quiescent epochs of ∼0.2–0.3 Gyr. We also estimated a radial abundance gradient of  −0.08 ± 0.02  , which is consistent with the most recent determinations for the Galactic disc, but no clear evidence for a gradient perpendicular to the Galactic plane is found.  相似文献

We present CCD observations for the distant northern open star clusters Berkeley 81, Berkeley 99, NGC 6603 and NGC 7044 in B V I photometric passbands. A total of 9 900 stars have been observed in fields of about 6 × 6 arcmin2 of the sky around the clusters. Colour–magnitude diagrams in V , ( B  −  V ) and V , ( V  −  I ) have been generated down to V  = 22 mag and, for the first time, such diagrams have been produced for the clusters Berkeley 81 and Berkeley 99. The data serve as a base for the study of mass functions and for comparison with theoretical models. Analysis of the radial distribution of stellar surface density indicates that the radius values for Berkeley 81, Berkeley 99, NGC 6603 and NGC 7044 are 2.7, 2.8, 2.8 and 2.2 arcmin respectively. By fitting the latest convective core overshooting isochrones to the colour–magnitude diagram and using its morphological features, reddenings, distances and ages of the star clusters have been determined. Broad but well-defined main sequences with stellar evolutionary effects in the brighter stars are clearly visible in colour–magnitude diagrams of all the clusters under study. Some blue stragglers along with well-developed giant branches and red giant clumps are also clearly seen in all of them. The clusters studied here are located at a distance of ∼ 3 kpc, except for Berkeley 99 which is located at a distance of 4.9 kpc. Their linear sizes lie between 3.8 and 8.0 pc; E ( B  −  V ) values range from 0.3 to 1.0 mag, while their ages are between 0.5 and 3.2 Gyr. Thus the star clusters studied here are of intermediate and high age but are compact and distant objects.  相似文献

A morphological analysis has been presented as a completed work for estimating the most physical properties of open star cluster NGC 7296. For this purpose, near‐IR database of the digital Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) has been used. Center, radius, membership, distances, reddening, age, metallicity, luminosity and mass functions, total mass, mass segregation and the dynamical relaxation time of the cluster have been estimated. We present a CCD BV photometry of the possible binary open star cluster NGC 7031/NGC 7086. The aim is to confirm or disprove their common nature on the grounds of their age and distance. An age of 224 ± 25 Myr and a distance of 831 ± 72 pc was determined for NGC 7031, and 178 ± 25 Myr, 955 ± 84 pc for NGC 7086, respectively. Based on these differences in age and distance we conclude that the two clusters are most likely not formed together from one and the same giant molecular cloud and thus do not form a true binary cluster. We present CCD photometry in the Johnson U , B and V and Kron–Cousins I passbands for the open cluster NGC 2587. The sample consists of 4406 stars reaching down to   V ∼ 21.0  . We developed a new method to clean statistically the colour–magnitude diagrams. NGC 2587 appears to be a sparse, relatively bright open cluster, with a few tens of members projected on to a populous star field. The comparatively bright F7/8 II type star HD 70927, located close to the cluster centre, seems not to be a member. Our analysis suggests that NGC 2587 is slightly younger than the Hyades and probably of solar metallicity. A cluster radius of roughly 8 arcmin was estimated from the radial stellar density profile. From 18 probable cluster members with measured proper motions, we derive the following mean values for NGC 2587:  μα=−4.3 ± 3.6 mas yr−1  and  μδ=−2.5 ± 3.4 mas yr−1  . Adopting the theoretical metal content   Z = 0.02  , which provides the best global fit, we derive a cluster age of  500+60−50  . Simultaneously, colour excesses   E ( B − V ) = 0.10  and   E ( V − I ) = 0.15  and an apparent distance modulus of   V − MV = 12.50  are obtained. The interstellar extinction in the cluster direction is found to follow the normal law. NGC 2587 is located at a distance of (2.70 ± 0.70) kpc from the Sun and ∼9.8 kpc from the Galactic centre.  相似文献

For at all 24 stars in the field of the heavity reddened open cluster NGC 1502 we obtained UBV and uvby photometry. 19 of these stars we classified definitely as members. From the photometric results we derived 1·1 × 107 years as the cluster age, 960 pc as its distance, and <E(B—V)> = 0·78 mag as mean reddening of the cluster. From the reddening of the foreground stars we evaluated that the intracluster reddening has to be smaller than 0·2 mag. The value of the colour excess ratio E(b—y)/E(B—V) = 0·770 leads us to the conclusion that in the spectra of the cluster stars a very broadband structure (VBS) with a central depth of about 0·04 mag is present.  相似文献

We report on the first UBVRI CCD photometry of three poorly known star clusterings in the region of η Carinae: Bochum 9, 10 and 11. We find that they are young, rather poor, loose open clusters.
We argue that Bochum 9 is probably a small and loose open cluster with about 30 probable members having E ( B − V )=0.63±0.08 , located 4.6 kpc far from the Sun, beyond the Carina spiral arm.
Similarly, Bochum 10 is a sparse aggregate with 14 probable members having E ( B − V )=0.47±0.05 and at a distance of 2.7 kpc from the Sun.
Finally, Bochum 11 is a less than 4×106 yr old cluster for which we identify 24 members. It has a reddening E ( B − V )=0.58±0.05 , and lies between Bochum 10 and 9, at 3.5 kpc from the Sun. We propose that in the field of the cluster some stars might be pre-main-sequence candidates.  相似文献

We aim to characterize the properties of the stellar clusters in the Milky Way. Utilising an expectation-maximization method, we determined that the cluster FSR 0358, originally discovered by J.D. Kirkpatrick, is the most likely real cluster amongst the cluster candidates from Froebrich et al. Here, we present new deep high resolution near-infrared imaging of this object obtained with the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). The analysis of the data reveals that FSR 0358 (Kirkpatrick 1) is a  5 ± 2 Gyr  old open cluster in the outer Milky Way. Its age, metallicity of   Z = 0.008  and distance from the Galactic Centre of 11.2 kpc are typical for the known old open galactic clusters. So far six of the FSR cluster candidates have been identified as having an age above 5 Gyr. This shows the significance of this catalogue in enhancing our knowledge of the oldest open clusters in the Galaxy.  相似文献

We present deep CCD BVI photometry of the distant, old open cluster Berkeley 22, covering from the red giant branch (RGB) to about six magnitudes below the main-sequence (MS) turn-off. Using the synthetic colour–magnitude diagram method with three different types of stellar evolutionary tracks, we estimate values and theoretical uncertainties of the distance modulus ( m − M )0, reddening E ( B − V ), age τ and approximate metallicity. The best fit to the data is obtained for  13.8 ≤ ( m − M )0≤ 14.1,  0.64 ≤ E ( B − V ) ≤ 0.65,  2.0 ≤τ≤ 2.5 Gyr  (depending on the amount of overshooting from convective regions adopted in the stellar models) and solar metallicity.  相似文献

We have derived ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 globular clusters associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. Based upon a calibration with Galactic globular clusters, we find that our sample of globular clusters in NGC 4472 span a metallicity range of approximately −1.6≤[Fe/H]≤0 dex. There is evidence of a radial metallicity gradient in the globular cluster system which is steeper than that seen in the underlying starlight. Determination of the absolute ages of the globular clusters is uncertain, but formally, the metal-poor population of globular clusters has an age of 14.5±4 Gyr and the metal-rich population is 13.8±6 Gyr old. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the globular cluster populations present in these data are older than 6 Gyr at the 95 per cent confidence level. We find that within the uncertainties, the globular clusters are old and coeval, implying that the bimodality seen in the broadband colours primarily reflects metallicity and not age differences.  相似文献
