In this work we investigate p‐mode power variation with solar atmosphere. To this aim, we use THÉMIS observations of the Na D1 (λ 5896 Å) and K (λ 7699 Å) spectral lines. While the formation heights of the K spectral line are essentially located in the photospheric layer, the formation heights of the Na D1 line span a much wider region: from photosphere up to chromosphere. Hence, we had the opportunity to infer p‐mode power variation up to the chromospheric layer. By analyzing power spectra obtained by temporal series at different points of the Na D1 and K spectral lines, we confirm and quantify the increase in p‐mode power towards higher atmospheric layers. Furthermore, the large span in formation heights of the Na D1 line induces a larger enhancement of p‐mode power with solar atmosphere compared to the K spectral line. We experiment with a method of measuring the frequency of solar p modes, intended to extend the passband for the variations of the frequency spectrum as high as possible. So far this passband is limited to a fraction of μ Hz for the classical analysis based on numerical fits of a theoretical line profile to a power spectrum averaged over periods lasting at least several weeks. This limit for the present analysis can be shifted to the mHz range, corresponding to some of the “5 min” oscillations, but in this range we use a lower resolution which allows us to separate odd and even p modes. We show an example of the results for long term variations and apply this analysis to search for a modulation of the p‐mode frequency spectrum by asymptotic series of solar g modes. A faint signal is found in the analysis of 10 years of GOLF data. This very preliminary result possibly indicates the detection of a small number of g modes of degree l = 1. A tentative determination of an observational value of the parameter P0 follows. P0 is the scaling factor of the asymptotic series of g modes and is a key data for solar core physics. We investigate the effect of modified gravity on cluster abundance and the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) angular power spectrum. Our modified gravity is based on a phenomenological extension of the Dvali–Gabadadze–Porrati model which includes two free parameters characterizing deviation from Λ cold dark matter cosmology. Assuming that Birkhoff's theorem gives a reasonable approximation, we study the spherical collapse model of structure formation and show that while the growth function changes to some extent, modified gravity gives rise to no significant change in the linear density contrast at collapse time. The growth function is enhanced in the so called normal branch, while in the 'self-accelerating' branch it is suppressed. The SZ angular power spectrum is computed in the normal branch, which allows us to put observational constraints on the parameters of the modified gravity model using small scale cosmic microwave background observation data.

In this paper, we develop a spectral differential technique with which the dynamical mass of low‐mass companions can be found. This method aims at discovering close companions to late‐type stars by removing the stellar spectrum through a subtraction of spectra obtained at different orbital phases and discovering the companion spectrum in the difference spectrum in which the companion lines appear twice (positive and negative signal). The resulting radial velocity difference of these two signals provides the true mass of the companion, if the orbital solution for the radial velocities of the primary is known. We select the CO line region in the K band for our study, because it provides a favourable star‐to‐companion brightness ratio for our test case GJ 1046, an M2V dwarf with a low‐mass companion that most likely is a brown dwarf. Furthermore, these lines remain largely unblended in the difference spectrum so that the radial velocity amplitude of the companion can be measured directly. Only if the companion rotates rapidly and has a small radial velocity due to a high mass, does blending occur for all lines so that our approach fails. We also consider activity of the host star, and show that the companion difference flux can be expected to have larger amplitude than the residual signal from the active star so that stellar activity does not inhibit the determination of the companion mass. In addition to determining the companion mass, we restore the single companion spectrum from the difference spectrum using singular value decomposition. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We make predictions of the detectability of low‐frequency p modes. Estimates of the powers and damping times of these low‐frequency modes are found by extrapolating the observed powers and widths of higher‐frequency modes with large observed signal‐to‐noise ratios. The extrapolations predict that the low‐frequency modes will have small signal‐to‐noise ratios and narrow widths in a frequency‐power spectrum. Monte Carlo simulations were then performed where timeseries containing mode signals and normally distributed Gaussian noise were produced. The mode signals were simulated to have the powers and damping times predicted by the extrapolations. Various statistical tests were then performed on the frequency‐amplitude spectra formed from these timeseries to investigate the fraction of spectra in which the modes could be detected. The results of these simulations were then compared to the number of p‐modes candidates observed in real Sun‐as‐a‐star data at low frequencies. The fraction of simulated spectra in which modes were detected decreases rapidly as the frequency of modes decreases and so the fraction of simulations in which the low‐frequency modes were detected was very small. However, increasing the signal‐to‐noise (S/N) ratio of the low‐frequency modes by a factor of 2 above the extrapolated values led to significantly more detections. Therefore efforts should continue to further improve the quality of solar data that is currently available. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The asteroseismic observations provided by current and future missions like CoRoT or Kepler will have a quality closer to those obtained for the Sun. In this context, tools and methods developed for helioseismology can be applied to other stars. In this paper, we focus on solar‐like oscillations of stars with an unknown rotation axis inclination and study, by means of maximum‐likelihood estimation, the errors on the determination of l = 1 p‐mode parameters. We cross-correlate WMAP and ROSAT diffuse X-ray background maps and look for common features in both data sets. We use the power spectrum of the product maps and the cross-power spectrum to highlight a possible correlation. The power spectrum of the product maps does not detect any correlation and the cross-power spectrum does not show any significant deviation from zero. We explore different explanations for this lack of correlation. A universe with a low value of  σ8  could naturally explain the lack of correlation. We also discuss the systematic effects that can affect this result, in particular the subtraction of some cluster signal from the ROSAT diffuse maps, which could significantly suppress the correlation signal. These systematic effects considerably reduce the significance of our constraints on the cosmological model. When we include the systematic effects, we find a weaker constraint on  σ8  , allowing models with values as large as  σ8= 1  (for  Ωm= 0.3  ) to be consistent with the lack of correlation. To illustrate the capabilities of the method with future high-quality data, we show how from the correlation signal it should be possible to predict the level of contamination of the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect on the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background. Within the systematic errors, we find evidence that this contribution is negligible for WMAP and is expected to be small in experiments like ACBAR or CBI, but can be important for future high-resolution experiments.

The advent of pipeline‐processed data both from space‐ and ground‐based observatories often disposes of the need of full‐fledged data reduction software with its associated steep learning curve. In many cases, a simple tool doing just one task, and doing it right, is all one wishes. In this spirit we introduce CORA, a line fitting tool based on the maximum likelihood technique, which has been developed for the analysis of emission line spectra with low count numbers and has successfully been used in several publications. CORA uses a rigorous application of Poisson statistics. From the assumption of Poissonian noise we derive the probability for a model of the emission line spectrum to represent the measured spectrum. The likelihood function is used as a criterion for optimizing the parameters of the theoretical spectrum and a fixed point equation is derived allowing an efficient way to obtain line fluxes. As an example we demonstrate the functionality of the program with an X‐ray spectrum of Capella obtained with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) on board the Chandra observatory and choose the analysis of the Ne IX triplet around 13.5 Å.

The statistical properties of a map of the primary fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) may be specified to high accuracy by a few thousand power spectra measurements, provided the fluctuations are Gaussian, yet the number of parameters relevant for the CMB is probably no more than ∼10–20. Consequently, there is a large degree of redundancy in the power spectrum data. In this paper, we show that the moped data compression technique can reduce the CMB power spectrum measurements to ∼10–20 numbers (one for each parameter), from which the cosmological parameters can be estimated virtually as accurately as from the complete power spectrum. Combined with recent advances in the speed of generation of theoretical power spectra, this offers opportunities for very fast parameter estimation from real and simulated CMB skies. The evaluation of the likelihood itself, at Planck resolution, is speeded up by factors up to ∼108, ensuring that this step will not be the dominant part of the data analysis pipeline.

We have identified three possible ways in which future XMM‐Newton observations can provide significant constraints on the equation of state of neutron stars. First, using a long observation of the neutron star X‐ray transient Cen X‐4 in quiescence one can use the RGS spectrum to constrain the interstellar extinction to the source. This removes this parameter from the X‐ray spectral fitting of the pn and MOS spectra and allows us to investigate whether the variability observed in the quiescent X‐ray spectrum of this source is due to variations in the soft thermal spectral component or variations in the power law spectral component coupled with variations in NH. This will test whether the soft thermal spectral component can indeed be due to the hot thermal glow of the neutron star. Potentially such an observation could also reveal redshifted spectral lines from the neutron star surface. Second, XMM‐Newton observations of radius expansion type I Xray bursts might reveal redshifted absorption lines from the surface of the neutron star. Third, XMM‐Newton observations of eclipsing quiescent low‐mass X‐ray binaries provide the eclipse duration. With this the system inclination can be determined accurately. The inclination determined from the X‐ray eclipse duration in quiescence, the rotational velocity of the companion star and the semi‐amplitude of the radial velocity curve determined through optical spectroscopy, yield the neutron star mass. The oxygen abundance distribution in solar neighbourhood halo subdwarfs is deduced, using two alternative, known empirical relationships, involving the presence or the absence of [O/Fe] plateau for low [Fe/H] values, from a sample of 372 kinematically selected halo stars, for which the iron abundance distribution has been determined by Ryan & Norris (1991). The data are interpreted by a simple, either homogeneous or inhomogeneous model of chemical evolution, using an updated value of the solar oxygen abundance. The effect of changing the solar oxygen abundance, the power‐law exponent in the initial mass function, and the rate of oxygen nucleosyntesis, keeping the remaining input parameters unchanged, is investigated, and a theorem is stated. In all cases, part of the gas must necessarily be inhibited from forming stars, and no disk contamination has to be advocated for fitting the empirical oxygen abundance distribution in halo subdwarfs of the solar neighbourhood (EGD). Then a theorem is stated, which allows a one‐to‐one correspondence between simple, homogeneous models with and without inhibited gas, related to same independent parameters of chemical evolution, except lower stellar mass limit, real yield, and inhibition parameter. The mutual correlations between the latter parameters are also specified. In addition the starting point, and the point related to the first step, of the theoretical distribution of oxygen abundance (TGD) predicted by simple, inhomogeneous models, is calculated analytically. The mean oxygen abundance of the total and only inhibited gas, respectively, are also determined. Following the idea of a universal, initial mass function (IMF), a power‐law with both an exponent p = 2.9, which is acceptably close to Scalo IMF for mm, and an exponent p = 2.35, i.e. Salpeter IMF, have been considered. In general, both the age‐metallicity relationship and the empirical distribution of oxygen abundance in G dwarfs of the disk solar neighbourhood, are fitted by power‐law IMF exponents in the range 2.35 ≤ p ≤ 2.9. Acceptable models predict about 15% of the total mass in form of long‐lived stars and remnants, at the end of halo evolution, with a mean gas oxygen abundance which is substantially lower than the mean bulge and initial disk oxygen abundance. To avoid this discrepancy, either the existence of a still undetected, baryonic dark halo with about 15% of the total mass, or an equal amount of gas loss during bulge and disk formation, is necessary. The latter alternative implies a lower stellar mass limit close to 0.2 m, which is related to a power‐law IMF exponent close to 2.77. Acceptable models also imply a rapid halo formation, mainly during the first step, Δt = 0.5 Gyr, followed by a period (three steps) where small changes occur. Accordingly, statistical fluctuations are found to produce only minor effects on the evolution.

Planetary transits detected by the CoRoT mission can be mimicked by a low‐mass star in orbit around a giant star. Spectral classification helps to identify the giant stars and also early‐type stars which are often excluded from further follow‐up. We study the potential and the limitations of low‐resolution spectroscopy to improve the photometric spectral types of CoRoT candidates. In particular, we want to study the influence of the signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) of the target spectrum in a quantitative way. We built an own template library and investigate whether a template library from the literature is able to reproduce the classifications. Including previous photometric estimates, we show how the additional spectroscopic information improves the constraints on spectral type. Low‐resolution spectroscopy (R ≈ 1000) of 42 CoRoT targets covering a wide range in SNR (1–437) and of 149 templates was obtained in 2012–2013 with the Nasmyth spectrograph at the Tautenburg 2 m telescope. Spectral types have been derived automatically by comparing with the observed template spectra. The classification has been repeated with the external CFLIB library. The spectral class obtained with the external library agrees within a few sub‐classes when the target spectrum has a SNR of about 100 at least. While the photometric spectral type can deviate by an entire spectral class, the photometric luminosity classification is as close as a spectroscopic classification with the external library. A low SNR of the target spectrum limits the attainable accuracy of classification more strongly than the use of external templates or photometry. Furthermore we found that low‐resolution reconnaissance spectroscopy ensures that good planet candidates are kept that would otherwise be discarded based on photometric spectral type alone. We present the analysis of optical and X‐ray XMM‐Newton data of the source 4U 1344‐60. On the basis of the optical data we propose to classify 4U 1344‐60 as a Seyfert 1.5 galaxy and we measured a redshift value z = 0.012 ± 0.001. The observed X‐ray spectrum is complex. The continuum emission can be described as a power law obscured by two neutral absorption components. 4U 1344‐60 exhibits a broad and skewed iron line at 6.4 keV most likely originated in a few gravitational radius of an accretion disc. The analysis also reveals the presence of two narrow emission line‐like features at ∼4.9 keV and ∼5.3 keV. Assuming that hot spots on the surface of the accretion disc, orbiting very close to the black hole is responsible of these emission lines, the accretion disc would present an inclination of 20° and the active regions would be located in the 6–10 R g radius range. The spectroscopic analysis of systems with transiting planets gives strong constraints on planetary masses and radii as well as the chemical composition of the systems. The properties of the system OGLE‐TR‐10 are not well‐constrained, partly due to the discrepancy of previous measurements of the effective temperature of the host star. This work, which is fully independent from previous works in terms of data reduction and analysis, uses the Hα profile in order to get an additional constraint on the effective temperature. We take previously published UVES observations which have the highest available signal‐to‐noise ratio for OGLE‐TR‐10. A proper normalization to the relative continuum is done using intermediate data products of the reduction pipeline of the UVES spectrograph. The effective temperature then is determined by fitting synthetic Hα profiles to the observed spectrum. With a result of Teff = 6020 ± 140 K, the Hα profile clearly favours one of the previous measurements. The Hα line is further consistent with dwarf‐like surface gravities as well as solar and super‐solar metallicities previously derived for OGLE‐TR‐10.The Hα line could not be used to its full potential, partly because of the varying shape of the UVES échelle orders after flat field correction. We suggest to improve this feature when constructing future spectrographs. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In this paper, the fourth in a series, we examine again one of the implications of the Lin‐Shu density‐wave theory, specifically, the noncircular systematic motion of the Galactic objects. Our previous investigation is extended by analyzing simultaneously both the line‐of‐sight and transversal velocities of a sample of open clusters for which velocities, distances and ages are available. The ordinary equations of the Oort‐Lindblad theory of galactic differential rotation are used. The minor effects caused by the two‐dimensional tightly‐wound density waves are also taken into account. The published data of 242 currently known optically visible clusters having distances r < 3 kpc from the Sun and ‐200 < z < 200 pc from the Galactic plane, and ages 2 × 108 < t < 2 × 109 yr are collected from Dias et al. (2014), excluding extremely far, high‐velocity, young and old objects in our fitting. The most noteworthy result is the fact that the parameters of Lin–Shu type density waves estimated from two independent line‐of‐sight and transversal along the Galactic longitude velocities are nearly equal. We argue that the resemblance of these Galactic wave structures is so remarkable that no doubt is felt as to the theory's truth with respect to these data. The results obtained allow us to conclude that several low‐m trailing density‐wave patterns with different number of spiral arms m (say, m = 1, 2, 3, and 4), pitch angles (about 5°, 8°, 11°, and 14°, respectively) and amplitudes of the perturbed gravitational potential may coexist in the Galaxy. The latter suggests the asymmetric multiarm, not well‐organized (“flocculent”) spiral structure of the system. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We present X‐ray spectral analysis of the super‐soft source CAL87 using ASCA, Chandra, XMM‐Newton observations. Early ASCA CCD spectrum reported a strong oxygen absorption edge, which is considered to originate in the an optically thick white‐dwarf atmosphere. On the other hand, contemporaneous grating observations by Chandra and XMM‐Newton indicate emission line dominated spectra, which obviously indicate the optically thin origin. Fitting all the available CCD (ASCA and XMM‐Newton) and grating spectra (XMM‐Newton and Chandra) simultaneously, we show that the CAL87 X‐ray energy spectrum is in fact composed of both an optically thick component with deep absorption edges and an optically thin component with numerous emission lines. The current result supports the standard SSS model that the primary source of X‐ray emission is nuclear burning in the white dwarf atmosphere, surrounded by a highly photoionised, optically thin corona (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present monitoring analysis of 8 XMM‐Newton observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3, spanning a period of ∼19 months. The continuum flux in the 3–12 keV band remains constant during this observing period. The X‐ray spectrum is well described, in agreement with previous works, by a highly absorbed (N H > 1024 cm–2) power law model, with a photon index Γ = 1.9 and a strong reflection component. A strong Fe Kα line at 6.4 keV with an equivalent width of ∼500 eV is detected in the X‐ray spectrum. When we consider the co‐added spectrum we also detect a weaker emission line at 7.4 keV corresponding to neutral Ni Kα emission and weak evidence for the presence of an ionized Fe Kα line at 6.7 keV. Direct comparison with the results obtained from an earlier XMM‐Newton observation of Mrk 3, shows a decrease in the continuum flux of ∼30 per cent followed by a similar decrease in the reflected component. Both emission line components at 6.4 and 6.7 keV do not vary. However we find that an alternative model where the N H varies by 20 per cent is also plausible. In this case both the continuum and the reflected emission do not change. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In this paper, we show that if a single sterile neutrino exists such that     , it can serendipitously solve all outstanding issues of the Modified Newtonian Dynamics. We focus on fitting the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in detail which is possible using a flat Universe with     and the usual baryonic and dark energy components. One cannot match the CMB if there is more than one massive sterile neutrino, nor with three active neutrinos of 2 eV. This model has the same expansion history as the Λ cold dark matter  (ΛCDM)  model and only differs at the galactic scale, where the modified dynamics outperform  ΛCDM  comprehensively. We discuss how an 11 eV sterile neutrino can explain the dark matter of galaxy clusters without influencing individual galaxies and potentially match the matter power spectrum.
