Clusters of galaxies in which radio emission at low frequencies (178 MHz) has been detected were classified on the Bautz-Morgan (BM) system according to the dominance of the brightest galaxy. Radio sources with steep low-frequency spectra occur in clusters of all BM types but more often in rich clusters; the distributions of BM types for clusters with high and low spectral indices between 38 and 178 MHz are similar. Glass copies of Mount Palomar Sky Survey plates were measured to determine the distribution of the ten brightest galaxies in clusters without dominant galaxies. Some clusters were found to have central cores of bright galaxies which may reflect mass segregation of galaxies due to dynamical friction. The bright galaxies in such cores may later merge to form dominant cD galaxies. The positions of the cD galaxies and cores of bright galaxies are often at projected distances <200 kpc from the low-frequency radio emission. The low-frequency spectrum of radio emission associated with a cD galaxy may be either steep or normal, but the low-frequency spectrum from a core of bright galaxies is usually steep. A steep spectrum may develop when a radio source is confined by hot gas in a cluster over a long period (109 yr). Confinement would probably occur for radio sources associated with bright galaxies in the cores of clusters and cD galaxies in clusters. However, cD galaxies may have recurrent radio outbursts so that steep spectra are not always observed.  相似文献

A radio survey, using the Very Large Array at 20 and 90 cm λ has been carried out in the direction of 46 distant Abell clusters (0.1 ≲ z ≲ 0.3) dominated by a cD galaxy (clusters classified to be Bautz-Morgan I type). A radio source coincident with the cD galaxy was detected in 16 clusters. We find that the radio luminosity function of the cD galaxies at 20cm λ, and below the luminosityP 1.4ghz ≲ 1024.5 W Hz-1, is similar to that of brightest ellipticals in less clustered environments. Above this luminosity, the cDs seem to have a higher probability of becoming radio sources. The effect of optical brightness on radio emission is shown to be the same for the two classes. No significantly large population of very-steep-spectrum sources with spectral index α >1.2 (flux density ∝ frequency) was found to be associated with cD galaxies. A significant negative correlation is found between the radio luminosity of the cD galaxy and the cooling-time of the intra cluster medium near the galaxy. We also present evidence that the probability of radio emission from first-ranked galaxies is dependent upon their location relative to the geometrical centres of clusters and thus related to the morphological class and the evolutionary state of the clusters. We argue that both these effects are primarily caused by the dynamical evolution of these distant clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

We report on the statistical analysis of a sample of AGNs (Seyferts and LINERs) selected from an RBSC-NVSS sample of the brightest X-ray sources. The sample is large enough and unbiased for a detailed study of multi-frequency (radio to X-ray) properties of AGN. There are no significant differences in X-ray, optical, far-infrared, and radio powers, core dominance, radio loudness, radio spectral index, and two-point radio-to-optical and optical-to-X-ray spectral indices of Seyfert types 1 and 2. These findings strongly support the unification model, and the observed differences between Sy1 and Sy2 are due to both the variable obscuration and different geometric orientation effects. The correlation between the X-ray and radio emission over many decades is primary and indicates the intrinsically similar origin of both radiations in Seyfert galaxies, powered mainly by AGN, rather than compact starbursts. For Seyfert galaxies we found that the slopes of the relations L X - L R and L X - L B are flat, which indicate the existence of components unrelated with X-ray. Perhaps only for LINERs is the observed L X - L R relation completely due to AGNs. The Sy1, Sy2, and LINER galaxies show different slopes in the relation L X - L 1.4, and the relative contribution of extended radio components may be the cause of these differences. The possible effects of unresolved extended radio and X-ray components are quantitatively discussed.  相似文献

Using published flux densitiesS at low frequenciesv, radio spectra were constructed for 3C, 4C, and 4CT radio sources in Abell clusters of galaxies, radio galaxies outside Abell clusters, and quasars with known redshifts. About half the sources in rich Abell clusters (richness classesR>-2) have steep spectra between 38 and 178 MHz with spectral indices 38 178 > whereSv . However, radio galaxies outside clusters have values of 38 178 1.2, and no steep spectra were found among 170 quasars. The radio sources in rich clusters are probably confined by intergalactic gas, and the steep spectra develop over a period of 109 yr as relativistic electrons lose energy. The absence of steep spectra among quasars does not necessarily mean that quasars never occur in rich clusters of galaxies, since quasars are probably being observed only in their early high-luminosity phases. The possibility that some quasar events occur in the nuclei of the dominant cD galaxies in clusters is discussed, but quasar events may occur in more than one type of galaxy.  相似文献

The search for non thermal radio emission from clusters of galaxies is a powerful tool to investigate the existence of magnetic fields on such large scale. Unfortunately, such observations are scarce thus far, mainly because of the very faint large scale radio emission expected in clusters of galaxies. In the present contribution we will first review the status of the radio observations of clusters of galaxies, carried out with the aim of detecting large scale radio emission. We will then focus on the large scale radio emission detected at 327 MHz and 610 MHz in the Coma cluster of galaxies. The features of the detected radio emission suggest that a magnetic field with an intensity of the order of ~ 10–7 Gauss must be present on a scale of about 2 Mpc (forH o = 100km s –1 Mpc –1). The morphology of the radio emission is similar to that of the most recent X-ray images derived with ROSAT, and follows the distribution of the galaxies in the cluster. All these pieces of information will be taken into account in the discussion on the possible origin of this large scale magnetic field.  相似文献

From published data on X-ray sources identified with clusters of galaxies the X-ray luminosity function of the clusters was derived to ϕx ˜ Lx-0.8 in the range 1043Lx ≦ (2–3) · 1045 ergs/s. For Lx > 3 · 1045 ergs/s the function decreases abruptly.  相似文献

The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L 20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L 20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters.  相似文献

The properties of OH megamaser galaxies in the x-ray and radio ranges are discussed. Based on a sample of OH megamaser galaxies it is shown that the x-ray emission and the width of the OH radio line are closely related. The line width is also related to the radio emission from megamasers, but it depends only weakly on the infrared emission and this relationship is statistically less significant. The OH line width and the radio and x-ray emissions depend on the central mass of megamasers. There is a weak correlation between the radio and x-ray emissions owing to multiple scattering of synchrotron photons and bursts from the galactic nucleus. These results indicate that an active nucleus can be dominant in OH megamaser galaxies.__________Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 3, pp. 421–430 (August 2005).  相似文献

We measured metal abundances of the intracluster medium in the central regions of 34 nearby clusters of galaxies, using ASCA data. Clusters that have a sharp X-ray emission centred on a cD galaxy are commonly found to exhibit a central increment in the Fe abundance, which is more pronounced in lower temperature clusters; +(0.1–0.2) solar at kT >5 keV, compared with +(0.2–0.3) solar at 1.5< kT <4 keV. These central excess metals are thought to be ejected from cD galaxies. Several low-temperature cD type clusters also show significant Si abundance increase by +(0.1–0.2) solar at the central region. Compared with the Si-rich abundances observed in the outer regions of rich clusters, the Si to Fe abundance ratio of central excess metals tends to be near the solar ratio, implying that type Ia products from cD galaxies are dominant for the central excess metals. On the other hand, some other clusters do not show the central Fe abundance increase. As these clusters tend to contain two or three central giant galaxies, it is suggested that galaxy interactions have removed the central abundance increase.  相似文献

In this contribution we review the properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and discuss the impact that X-ray cluster selection is having on their use as cosmological probes. BCGs form a unique galaxy population. They are located near the gravitational centre of galaxy clusters and are the most massive galaxies in the universe, being some 10 times more luminous than L* systems. Historically, BCGs have been credited with small intrinsic dispersion in their absolute magnitudes (Δ≃0.2–0.3 mag) and used as standard candles to constrain the cosmological parameters. Although indirect signs of mass accretion out to z≃1 have been observed, uncovering their full evolutionary picture has remained an elusive goal. Studies of BCGs based on serendipitiously discovered X-ray cluster samples, particularly from ROSAT, provide large numbers of unbiased clusters at z≤1. Furthermore X-ray emission guarantees the presence of a large gravitationally bound potential well and the X-ray information can be used to locate the centroids of clusters, aiding the identification of the BCG. We show that this has important consequences for studies of distance determination and large-scale streaming flows based on the optical properties of BCGs. Recent results based on X-ray selected clusters show large differences in near-IR BCG properties with their cluster environment; such that those in clusters with L x≥1.9×1044erg s-1 are brighter and more uniform than those in their low-L x counterparts. The BCGs in highL x systems show no evidence of having undergone mass growth, whereas those in low L x systems show a widerrange of evolution, with evidence that some have grown by a factor of 4 ormore since z≃1. These results are a direct indication of howa single homogeneous population of galaxies evolves and are a challenge to simple semi-analytical hierarchical models. If future observations at high redshift are to seriously challenge theory then better predictions of the evolutionary process are required. Sixteen poor clusters of galaxies with suspected cD galaxies are studied usingV-band photographs taken with the 105 cm Kiso Schmidt telescope. Galaxian images were automatically detected using an image detection software developed for the present study. It is found from the luminosity functions that the richness of the clusters are well correlated with the optical properties of central galaxies and the X-ray luminosities of the clusters.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

An analysis of a sample of OH megamaser galaxies is presented. It is shown that the dependence of LOH on LFIR (far infrared) is not quadratic, as previously assumed, but closer to linear. In megamaser galaxies, LC (radio continuum) LFIR1. Analysis of the data also shows that as the OH emission line width decreases, the absolute values of the pumping efficiency and maser amplification coefficient increase. The radio luminosity of the central component in these galaxies increases with a decrease in the ratio LFIR/LC, whereas the FIR luminosity remains constant. These results will, in all probability, force a reexamination of the questions of pumping and maser emission mechanisms in megamaser galaxies.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 39, No. 3, pp. 417–429, July–September, 1996.  相似文献

We report the serendipitous detection of a Wide-Angle Tail (WAT) radio galaxy at 240 and 610 MHz, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). This WAT is hosted by a cD galaxy PGC 1519010 whose photometric redshift given in the SDSS DR6 catalogue is close to the spectroscopic redshifts (0.105, 0.106 and 0.107) of three galaxies found within 4′ of the cD. Using the SDSS DR6, we have identified a total of 37 galaxies within 15′ of the cD, whose photometric redshifts are between 0.08 and 0.14. This strongly suggests that the cD is associated with a group of galaxies whose conspicuous feature is a north-south chain of galaxies (filament) extending to at least 2.6 Mpc. The ROSAT all-sky survey shows a faint, diffuse X-ray source in this direction, which probably marks the hot intracluster gas in the potential well of this group. We combine the radio structural information for this WAT with the galaxy clustering in that region to check its overall consistency with the models of WAT formation. The bending of the jet before and after its disruption forming the radio plume, are found to be correlated in this WAT, as seen from the contrasting morphological patterns on the two sides of the core. Probable constraints imposed by this on the models of WAT formation are pointed out. We also briefly report on the other interesting radio sources found in the proximity of the WAT. These include a highly asymmetric double radio source and an ultra-steep spectrum radio source for which no optical counterpart is detected in the SDSS.  相似文献

The radio properties ofUhuru X-ray sources with fairly certain extragalactic identifications are described briefly. Radio to X-ray flux ratios are low for rich clusters of galaxies and high for double radio sources. There is some evidence from the Abell 426 (Perseus) and Abell 1367 clusters that a radio galaxy in a rich cluster may be the centre of extended X-ray emission. Nuclei of galaxies have an enormous range in X-ray luminosity; the known range is from 1030 W for our galaxy to 3×1038 W for 3C 273. Unidentified X-ray sources at high galactic latitudes may include new classes of objects with very low radio to X-ray flux ratios or hard X-ray emission.  相似文献

The properties of OH megamaser galaxies are analyzed. Using the linear dependence of L OH on L FIR and the luminosity function for IR galaxies, the expected number of megamasers is estimated. From observational data at many frequencies (from radio waves to x rays), the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 16 objects have been plotted and studied. The SEDs of megamasers have the same form from the radio to the x ray range. Considerable emission is observed in the 3 μm range, which evidently indicates the presence of red giants and supergiants in these objects. Possible reasons for the departure of the slope of the dependence of L OH on L FIR from unity are considered. The assumption that collisional pumping may play an important role in the inversion of ground levels of the OH molecule and the saturated gain mechanism in megamasers is confirmed. We examine the disc-jet connection in stellar mass and supermassive black holes by investigating the properties of their compact emission in the hard X-ray and radio bands. We compile a sample of ∼100 active galactic nuclei with measured mass, 5 GHz core emission, and 2–10 keV luminosity, together with eight galactic black holes with a total of ∼50 simultaneous observations in the radio and X-ray bands. Using this sample, we study the correlations between the radio (LR) and the X-ray (LX) luminosity and the black hole mass (M). We find that the radio luminosity is correlated with both M and LX, at a highly significant level. We show how this result can be used to extend the standard unification by orientation scheme to encompass unification by mass and accretion rate.  相似文献

We review here the interplay of cluster and galaxy evolution. As a case study, we consider the Butcher-Oemler effect and propose that it is the result of the changing rate of cluster merger events in a hierarchical universe. This case study highlights the need for new catalogs of clusters and groups that possess quantified morphologies. We present such a sample here, namely the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) C4 Catalog, which has been objectively-selected from the SDSS spectroscopic galaxy sample. We outline here the C4algorithm and present first results based on the SDSS Early Data Release, including an X-ray luminosity-velocity dispersion (Lxv) scaling relationship (as a function of cluster morphology) and the density-SFR relation of galaxies within C4 clusters (Gomez et al., 2003). We also discuss the merger of Coma and the NGC4839 group and its effect on the galaxy populations in these systems. We finish with a brief discussion of a new sample ofHΔ-selected galaxies (i.e., k+a, post-starburst galaxies) obtained from the SDSS spectroscopic survey. We have discovered a giant radio halo in the massive merging cluster MACSJ0417.5-1154. This cluster, at a redshift of 0.443, is one of the most X-ray luminous galaxy cluster in the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS) with an X-ray luminosity in the 0.1–2.4 keV band of 2.9×1045 erg s − 1. Recent observations from GMRT at 230 and 610 MHz have revealed a radio halo of ∼ 1.2 × 0.3 Mpc2 in extent. This halo is elongated along the North-West, similar to the morphology of the X-ray emission from Chandra. The 1400 MHz radio luminosity (L r) of the halo is ∼2 × 1025 W Hz − 1, in good agreement with the value expected from the L x − L r correlation for cluster halos.  相似文献

The effect of X-ray irradiation on the line-driven stellar wind in X-ray binary systems is studied. The product of the X-ray luminosityL x and the densityn in the wind is a measure to distinguish between the optically thin and thick wind regimes. For an X-ray source of the radiation temperature of 10 keV, the critical value(L x n) c , is of the order of 1037 erg s–1 cm–3; hence, most of wind-fed X-ray sources lie in the optically thick wind regime because ofL x n>(L x n) c . Then the wind structure is determined not only by the parameter =(L x /nR 2),R the distance from the X-ray source, but also by the optical thickness due to helium. The formation of fully ionized helium region depends onL x andn in a way different from that of the Strömgren sphere. In such an optically thick wind, the region behind the He II ionization boundary is little affected by X-ray irradiation and the trace elements remain to be responsible for wind acceleration. Thus, its location is important for the structure of the wind and the interpretation of various phenomena in objects such as wind-fed X-ray pulsars.  相似文献
