The characteristics of Asian dust events that occurred in Northeast Asia during the springtime from 1993 to 2004 are investigated using 3-hourly SYNOP reports (World Meteorological Organization). Occurrences of blowing sand and dust storm are low in 1997 and 1999, but have increased rapidly since 2000. The maximum occurrence was recorded in 2002. Wind velocity of 6.5 m s− 1 as a threshold wind velocity is not so exactly consistent with the occurrence of blowing sand. However, wind velocity of 14 m s− 1 as a strong wind causing dust storm had similar tendency to those of dust storm and Dust Storm Index.Source regions of Asian dust are divided into three regions (A: dry arid, B: semi-arid, and C: cultivated), based upon the occurrence of blowing sand and dust storm. Eight meteorological stations are selected in three regions, which have frequent occurrences of blowing sand. Source regions of Asian dust that affect the Korean peninsula are gradually extending eastward. Positive anomalies of NDVI occurred in 1994, 1995, and 1998 when temperature was high and precipitation was heavy. However, the frequent occurrence of the dust phenomena is not always consistent with lots of vegetation, high temperature, and much precipitation in this study.  相似文献

The generation and development of dust storms are controlled by land surface conditions and atmospheric circulations. The latter, in turn, is influenced by the global ice–snow cover. In this study, we examine the relationship between the characteristics of dust storm activities in north China and the changes of global climate patterns. In particular, we are interested in whether Arctic ice–snow cover is related to the dust storm frequencies and intensities in north China. Our analysis, based on the monthly data for the period from 1954 to 1994, shows that this is indeed the case. This result suggests that the Arctic ice–snow cover can be used for the long-term prediction of dust storm activities in north China, and dust storm activities also serve as an indicator of global climate change.  相似文献

Modeling mineral dust emissions from Chinese and Mongolian deserts   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The present study investigates the frequency and intensity of mineral dust emissions over the deserts of eastern Asia from 1996 to 2001. Mineral dust emissions are simulated using a physical dust emission scheme over a region extending from 35.5°N to 47°N and from 73°E to 125°E. The input parameters required by the dust emission model are (1) surface features data including aerodynamic roughness length, soil dry size distribution and texture; and (2) meteorological surface data, mainly wind speed, soil moisture and snow cover. The way by which these surface features and meteorological data can be assessed is described and discussed. The influence of soil moisture and snow cover is taken into account and their effects on simulated dust emission are quantified. The simulations reproduce on a daily basis the location and intensity of the severe events of April 1998 and spring 2001 as recorded by the meteorological stations and/or described in various studies. Based on 6 yr of simulations, the main dust source regions are identified and their relative contributions to the total dust emissions are quantified. The seasonal cycle of the dust storms frequency is well reproduced with a maximum in spring. The simulations suggest that it is mainly controlled by the emissions occurring in the Taklimakan desert in latter spring and in summer, and by those occurring in the northern deserts of China in winter. The Taklimakan desert appears to be the most frequent and steady source of dust emissions during the studied period. On the other hand, in the Gobi desert, only a few dust emission events are simulated, but the dust amount emitted during each event is generally very large. In the northern deserts of China, dust emissions are frequent and their intensity is variable. These results show an important annual and inter-annual variability of the emitted dust (between 100 Mt yr− 1 and 460 Mt yr− 1), mainly controlled by the occurrence of severe events in the Gobi desert and in the northern deserts of China.  相似文献

This study is concerned with the mechanisms of dust storm development in East Asia and the characteristics of the responsible synoptic systems. Two severe East Asian dust storms which occurred in spring 2002 are analyzed using synoptic and remote sensing data. The relationships between the formation and the movement of the dust storms and the evolution of the synoptic systems are examined. It is shown that a dust storm may develop when a synoptic system moves to the desert area of Northeast Asia with a surface wind speed exceeding 6 m s− 1. Numerical simulations of the two dust storms are carried out using a dust storm forecasting model. The performance of the model is verified with observations. The dust sources are found to be consistent with the desert regions in Northeast Asia, but cover a somewhat larger area than the observations suggest. Finally, we present a conceptual model of dust storm generation and movement in East Asia on the basis of numerical modeling and synoptic analysis.  相似文献

Mongolian cyclones are important to the outbreaks of severe dust storms in Northeast Asia. In this paper, we conduct a diagnostic study and a numerical simulation of a rapidly developing Mongolian cyclone that produced the April 5 to 7, 2000 severe dust storm in East Asia. The surface pressure of the cyclone decreased rapidly on April 5 to 6 causing strong surface winds. The diagnosis shows that the cyclone was a “dry cyclone”, as the convergence of moisture flux was weak and the baroclinic forcing was strong. The analysis of the Q vectors also reveals that ageostrophic wind was significant in the middle and upper part of the cyclone, resulting in strong vertical motion in the lower part. The three-dimensional structure of the cyclone is characterized by an ascending southern warm current and a descending northern cold current. This structure is favorable to the release of available potential energy and the intensification of the cyclone. In the second part of this study, we develop a coupled system of a dust emission scheme and a mesoscale numerical model (MM5V3) and applied the system to the simulation of the Mongolian cyclone. The main features of the cyclone identified from the diagnostic analysis are successfully reproduced. The predicted dust storm-affected area is found to be consistent with the meteorological observations and satellite remote sensing. It is shown that the coupled system is capable of predicting the spatial and temporal variations of the dust storm.  相似文献

We present observations of a local dust storm performed by the OMEGA and PFS instruments aboard Mars Express. OMEGA observations are used to retrieve the dust single-scattering albedo in the spectral range 0.4-4.0 μm. The single-scattering albedo shows fairly constant values between 0.6 and 2.6 μm, and a sharp decrease at wavelengths shorter than 0.6 μm, in agreement with previous studies. It presents a small absorption feature due to ferric oxide at 0.9 μm, and a strong absorption feature due to hydrated minerals between 2.7 and 3.6 μm. We use a statistical method, the Independent Component Analysis, to determine that the dust spectral signature is decoupled from the surface albedo, proving that the retrieval of the single-scattering albedo is reliable, and we map the dust optical thickness with a conventional radiative transfer model. The effect of the dust storm on the atmospheric thermal structure is measured using PFS observations. We also simulate the thermal impact of the dust storm using a one-dimensional atmospheric model. A comparison of the retrieved and modeled temperature structures suggests that the dust in the storm should be confined to the 1-2 lowest scale heights of the atmosphere. However, the observed OMEGA reflectance in the CO2 absorption bands does not support this suggestion.  相似文献

Observations from 560 weather stations in China show that sand–dust storms occur most frequently in April in north China. The region consists of Sub-dry Mid Temperate, Dry Mid Temperate, Sub-dry South Temperate and Dry South Temperate Zones and much of the land surface is desert or semi-desert: it is relatively dry with minimal rainfall and a high annual mean temperature. In most regions of China, the annual mean frequency of sand–dust events decreased sharply between 1980 and 1997 and then increased from 1997 to 2000. Statistical analyses demonstrate that the frequency of sand–dust storms correlates highly with wind speed, which in turn is strongly related to land surface features; on the other hand, a significant correlation between storm events and other atmospheric quantities such as precipitation and temperature was not observed. Accordingly, land surface cover characteristics (vegetation, snowfall and soil texture) may play a significant role in determining the occurrence of sand–dust storms in China. Analysis of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index derived from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Empirical Orthogonal Function show that since 1995 surface vegetation cover in large areas of Northern China has significantly deteriorated. Moreover, a high correlation is shown to exist among the annual occurrence of sand–dust storms, surface vegetation cover and snowfall. This suggests that the deterioration of surface vegetation cover may strongly influence the occurrence of sand–dust storms in China. Soils with coarse and medium textures are found to be more associated with sand–dust storms than other soils.  相似文献

An integrated dust storm modeling system is developed for the prediction of dust storms. The system couples a wind erosion scheme, a dust transportation model and the Penn State/UCAR modeling system (MM5) with a geographic information database. The system can be used for the prediction of dust emission rate and dust concentration associated with individual dust storm events. Two severe dust storm events occurred in spring 2002, one on the 19th–22nd of March and the other on the 6th–9th of April. The integrated modeling system is used to simulate the two events. The numerical results are compared with surface weather records and satellite images and good agreement is found between the model results and observation in dust concentration distribution and evolutions. The Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia and the Badain Jaran Desert, Tengger Desert and Hunshandake sandy land in Inner Mongolia (China) are identified to be the dust sources for the two events. The dominant modes of dust particles over western Inner Mongolia and Mongolia are from 2 to 11 μm in size, and 2 to 22 μm over Beijing and its surrounding area. The emission of particles in the 2–11 μm size range is found to be most important for Northeast Asian dust storms.  相似文献

During the first international joint observation of the Leo strong meteor shower, multidisciplinary and multi-media synthetic observation of Leo and Draco strong meteor showers and their catastrophic space weather events were carried out. The comprehensive analysis of the observed and related data of the Leo, Perseus and Draco strong meteor showers obtained for near half a century (from 1957 to 2003) fully verifies that the non-sporadic periodic strong meteor shower may lead to catastrophic space weather events. Preliminary identification is made of the following: the mechanism of formation of strong meteor showers, the law of occurrence of the fbEs abnormal peak and serious safety hazards for astronavigation. Also discussed in this paper are the evolutionary process of cometary dust, the law of occurrence and loss of cosmic dust storm and the mechanism of maintaining cosmic dust in the mid-latitude Es layer.  相似文献

A review on East Asian dust storm climate, modelling and monitoring   总被引:8,自引:1,他引:7
In arid and semi-arid area of Asia, dust storms occur frequently. Asian dust storms have a major impact on the air quality of the densely populated areas of China, Korea and Japan, and are important to the global dust cycle. In extreme cases, they result in the loss of human lives and disruptions of social and economic activities. In recent years, systematic research on Asian dust storms has been carried out. Much progress has been made in the development of integrated dust storm monitoring and modeling systems by making use of advanced numerical models, satellite remote sensing and GIS data. In this paper, we summarize the recent achievements in Asian dust storm research with an emphasis on dust climatology, modeling and satellite monitoring. The concept of integrated dust storm monitoring and modeling system is described and a summary of the developments in key research areas is given, including new dust models and techniques in satellite remote sensing and system integration. We then discuss the current research frontiers and the challenges for future studies.  相似文献

In this paper, the dust event on 7 April 2001 in northern China is investigated with three MODIS thermal infrared (IR) bands. It is found that for the dust cloud, the observed 11 μm minus 12 μm brightness temperature difference (BTD) is always negative, while the BTD of 8.5 μm minus 11 μm varies from positive to negative depending on the dust concentration. Based on these distinguishing properties, we develop a dust mask algorithm to identify the dust storm occurrence and spatial extent. The algorithm can be used successfully in both the daytime and nighttime. Using the Mie spherical scattering theory, the thermal radiation transfer through the single dust layer is performed with the widely used forward model DISTORT. Our calculations show that the dust-like aerosols can well explain the observed BTD although both of the complex refractive index and particle size of aerosols will significantly influence the BTD. When the complex refractive index is fixed (dust-like aerosols in this paper), then the dust optical thickness and effective radii of dust particles can be retrieved from the brightness temperature (BT) of the 11 μm channel and the BTD of 11 μm minus 12 μm channels, respectively. The integral dust column density can also be derived from the retrieved dust optical thickness and effective radius.  相似文献

Dust devil data from Mars is limited by a lack of data relating to diurnal dust devil behaviour. Previous work looking at the Viking Lander meteorological data highlighted seasonal changes in temporal occurrence of dust devils and gave an indication of typical dust devil diameter, size, and internal dynamics. The meteorological data from Viking Lander 2 for sols 1 to 60 have been revisited to provide detailed diurnal dust devil statistics. Results of our analysis show that the Viking Lander 2 experienced a possible 38 convective vortices in the first 60 sols of its mission with a higher occurrence in the morning compared to Earth, possibly as a result of turbulence generated by the Lander body. Dust devil events have been categorised by statistical confidence and intensity. Some initial analysis and discussion of the results is also presented. Assuming a similar dust loading to the vortices seen by Mars Pathfinder, it is estimated that the amount of dust lofted in the locality of the Lander is approximately 800 ± 10 kgsol−1km−2.  相似文献

The polarization characteristics of an astronomical telescope is an important factor that affects polarimetry accuracy. Polarization modeling is an essential means to achieve high precision and efficient polarization measurement of the telescope, especially for the alt-azimuth mount telescope. At present, the polarization model for the telescope(i.e., the physical parametric model) is mainly constructed using the polarization parameters of each optical element. In this paper, an artificial neural network(ANN) is used to model the polarization characteristics of the telescope. The ANN model between the physical parametric model residual and the pointing direction of the telescope is obtained, which reduces the model deviation caused by the incompleteness of the physical parametric model. Compared with the physical parametric model, the model fitting and predictive accuracy of the New Vacuum Solar Telescope(NVST) is improved after adopting the ANN model. After using the ANN model, the polarization cross-talk from I to Q, U, and V can be reduced from 0.011 to 0.007, and the crosstalk among Q, U, and V can be reduced from 0.047 to 0.020, which effectively improves the polarization measurement accuracy of the telescope.  相似文献

Ultraviolet spectral reflectance data obtained from the Mariner 9 during the 1971 Mars dust storm were analyzed at two wavelengths to deduce the complex index of refraction of Martian dust. Martian dust particles were considered to be irregularly shaped and randomly oriented nonspherical particles. The analysis shows that the Mariner 9 data are consistent with the scattering by irregular particles with an index of refraction m = 1.59 ? 0.0015i at λ = 0.305 μm and m = 1.55 ? 0.004i at λ = 0.268 μm. Both the real and the imaginary parts of refractive index found are considerably smaller than previously reported results using a spherical shape model for Martian dust particles.  相似文献

We suggest a technique to determine the chemical and mineral composition of the lunar surface using artificial neural networks (ANNs). We demonstrate this powerful non-linear approach for prognosis of TiO2 abundance using Clementine UV-VIS mosaics and Lunar Soil Characterization Consortium data. The ANN technique allows one to study correlations between spectral characteristics of lunar soils and composition parameters without any restrictions on the character of these correlations. The advantage of this method in comparison with the traditional linear regression method and the Lucey et al. approaches is shown. The results obtained could be useful for the strategy of analyzing lunar data that will be acquired in incoming lunar missions especially in case of the Chandrayaan-1 and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter missions.  相似文献

During the period July 14–September 11, 1973, about 25 000 television pictures of Mars were obtained using a 0.7m telescope in ten spectral regions. A dust storm in moderate latitudes was recorded. It started before Mars passed perigee. During the observation period the atmosphere was gradually clearing.About 3000 pictures of Mars were taken using a 0.5m meniscus telescope during the period of Nobember 19, 1973–February 19, 1974. On November 19 the atmosphere was very hazy and heavy dust clouds were recorded. The second dust storm cleared during December through January.  相似文献

From 15 September 1997 through 21 January 2006, only a single planet-encircling martian dust storm was observed by MGS-MOC. The onset of the storm occurred on 26 June 2001 (Ls=184.7°), earliest recorded to date. It was initiated in the southern mid-to-low latitudes by a series of local dust storm pulses that developed along the seasonal cap edge in Malea and in Hellas basin (Ls=176.2°-184.4°). The initial expansion of the storm, though asymmetric, was very rapid in all directions (3-32 m s−1). The main direction of propagation, however, was to the east, with the storm becoming planet encircling in the southern hemisphere on Ls=192.3°. Several distinct centers of active dust lifting were associated with the storm, with the longest persisting for 86 sols (Syria-Claritas). These regional storms helped generate and sustain a dust cloud (“haze”), which reached an altitude of about 60 km and a peak opacity of τdust∼5.0. By Ls=197.0°, the cloud had encircled the entire planet between 59.0° S and 60.0° N, obscuring all but the largest volcanoes. The decay phase began around Ls∼200.4° with atmospheric dust concentrations returning to nominal seasonal low-levels at Ls∼304.0°. Exponential decay time constants ranged from 30-117 sols. The storm caused substantial regional albedo changes (darkening and brightening) as a result of the redistribution (removal and deposition) of a thin veneer of surface dust at least 0.1-11.1 μm thick. It also caused changes in meteorological phenomena (i.e., dust storms, dust devils, clouds, recession of the polar caps, and possibly surface temperatures) that persisted for just a few weeks to more than a single Mars year. The redistribution of dust by large annual regional storms might help explain the long period (∼30 years) between the largest planet-encircling dust storms events.  相似文献

The simplified theory of steady, nearly inviscid, thermally forced axially symmetric atmospheric motions developed by Schneider (1977) is applied to the study of the problem of the Martian great dust storms. A highly idealized calculation of the atmospheric response to heating concentrated in a small latitude band is carried out. Qualitatively different local and global response regimes are identified. As the heating is increased from zero, some critical value is reached at which the response jumps from local to global. It is suggested that this transition from local to global response may be related to the observed explosive growth of great dust storms. Results from the idealized model indicate that subtropical latitudes are favored for the initiation of a dust raising global dust storm, as the meridional scale of the response to a heat source of fixed intensity is largest for the heat source located close to the equator, but the surface stress in the zonal direction produced by the response increases as the heat source is moved towards the poles. Also, the steady axially symmetric Martian response to solar forcing is examined. Modification to the solar forced response due to an added latitudinally localized heat source is briefly discussed, and it is indicated that similar transition behavior to that obtained in the more idealized model is to be expected in this case also. Implications of the dynamical model for the dependence of the occurence of great dust storms on orbital parameters are remarked on.  相似文献

A complete Mars year of measurements of atmospheric water vapor in the south arctic have been obtained from the Viking Orbiters. Analysis of the observations indicates that, except for the south remnant cap, the southern hemisphere of Mars is devoid of any substantial reservoirs of water in contact with the atmosphere, and that, in the summer time, the top layer of soil is desiccated. Small amounts of water ice are incorporated into the annual CO2 cap; this water is released at the cap margin when it retreats in the spring. The first global dust storm resulted in heating of the south arctic atmosphere and a transport of water in from the equatorial region. The second global dust storm had a negligible effect on atmospheric water vapor; the dust contained little water.  相似文献

We introduce two new techniques in analyzing martian spectrally resolved radiance data obtained by the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES): spectral empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and the tri-spectral algorithm. Spectral EOF analysis allows us to obtain the variability of spectra and associated temporal and spatial patterns. The case study with TES 20° S-20° N data shows that the first principal component (PC1) dominates the total variance and is associated with surface or near-surface brightness temperature variations. The PC2 is associated with atmospheric variability, and a negative correlation between dust and ice absorptions can be clearly seen over many regions. The annual cycle is a major component of the PC1 temporal patterns. The fingerprint of the dust storm can be clearly seen in the PC2 temporal patterns in most areas except the highlands. Spectral EOF can be used for validation of the variability of martian GCMs. The tri-spectral algorithm is based on the differences between three bands (dust, ice and a weak CO2 absorption band) to distinguish spectra sampled in different situations: water ice cloud, dust, and surface anisothermality. We use a line-by-line radiative transfer model coupled with multiple scattering to investigate the sensitivity of this algorithm to dust and ice optical depth as well as surface emissivity. The comparisons between results of this algorithm and the TES team's retrieved dust and ice opacity are consistent over all studied periods except during the peak of the dust storm. Our algorithm is complementary to the more sophisticated TES retrieval and can be used to screen large amounts of data to get an overview.  相似文献
