Salient features of the analysis of the mutual event light curves of planetary satellites are presented. The need to carefully evaluate the flux contribution of the occulting/eclipsing satellite to the total flux is illustrated. Albedo variations on the satellites will produce signatures on the mutual event light curves. The partial events of the upcoming mutual event series of the uranian satellites can be modeled taking into account the albedo variations inferred from the maps of the southern regions imaged by Voyager 2 when only these regions are occulted/eclipsed. This will enable a robust determination of the astrometric parameters. The shape and asymmetry of the mutual event light curves along with the rotational light curves of the satellites obtained simultaneously during the planet's equinox crossing period can be utilized to obtain a coarse albedo map of the northern hemisphere of the satellites. These studies will also help in investigating possible changes in the known southern regions since the 1986 encounter of Voyager 2.  相似文献

The power-law frequency distributions of the peak flux of solar flare X-ray emission have been studied extensively and attributed to a system having self-organized criticality(SOC).In this paper,we first show that,so long as the shape of the normalized light curve is not correlated with the peak flux,the flux histogram of solar flares also follows a power-law distribution with the same spectral index as the powerlaw frequency distribution of the peak flux,which may partially explain why power-law distributions are ubiquitous in the Universe.We then show that the spectral indexes of the histograms of soft X-ray fluxes observed by GOES satellites in two different energy channels are different:the higher energy channel has a harder distribution than the lower energy channel,which challenges the universal power-law distribution predicted by SOC models and implies a very soft distribution of thermal energy content of plasmas probed by the GOES satellites.The temperature(T) distribution,on the other hand,approaches a power-law distribution with an index of 2 for high values of T.Hence the application of SOC models to the statistical properties of solar flares needs to be revisited.  相似文献

Photometry of mutual occultations and eclipses of natural planetary satellites allows accurate astrometric data to be obtained by reducing the derived light curves of the satellites. In contrast to commonly used techniques by which the differences between the topocentric angular coordinates of satellites are deduced, we suggest a new approach and develop a corresponding method. To simplify the use of photometric data, the differences between the planetocentric rectangular coordinates of the two satellites at one time are deduced in the new method from each light curve. The advantages of this approach are that after such an observational data reduction, it will suffice to consider only the planetocentric motion of the satellites to improve their orbital parameters.  相似文献

We carried out observations of mutual events in Saturn’s system of satellites as part of the PHESAT95 International Program. Three light curves of these events were obtained. We developed a technique of allowance for the influence of the law of light reflection from the surfaces of Saturn’s satellites, photometric nonuniformity of their surfaces, the phase effect, and the illumination distribution in the satellite penumbra (given the brightness distribution over the solar disk) on the light curve of an occultation or eclipse of one satellite by another. This technique is used to interpret our observations of these events and to determine the minimum separations between satellites or between a satellite and the shadow center of another satellite and the corresponding timings.  相似文献

The photometry of mutual occultations and eclipses of natural planetary satellites can be used to infer very accurate astrometric data. This can be achieved by processing the light curves of the satellites observed during international campaigns of photometric observations of these mutual events.
This work focuses on processing the complete data base of photometric observations of the mutual occultations and eclipses of the Galilean satellites made during the international campaign in 2002–2003. The final goal is to derive new accurate astrometric data.
We propose the most accurate photometric model of mutual events based on all the data available to date about the satellites, and develop the corresponding method for extracting astrometric data. This method is applied to derive astrometric data from photometric observations of mutual occultations and eclipses of the Galilean satellites.
We process the 371 light curves obtained during the international campaign of photometric observations of the Galilean satellites in 2002–2003. As compared with the theory, the rms 'O-C' residuals with respect to theory is equal to 0.055 and 0.064 arcsec in right ascension and declination, respectively, for the 274 best observations. Topocentric or heliocentric angular differences for satellite pairs are obtained for 119 time instants during the time period from 2002 October 10 to 2003 July 17.  相似文献

利用新发表的高精度、高密度天体测量星表UCAC2,对天王星的五颗主要卫星的CCD观测图像重新进行量测,采用不同方法作定标归算,并使用两种理论模型(GUST86和GUST06模型)计算卫星的理论位置。对不同方法所得到的卫星位置的O-C结果的分析和比较表明,本文获得的卫星位置精度,除天卫五(Miranda)有显著提高,其他4颗卫星的位置精度基本相同。本文中天卫一和天卫三的结果与"亮卫星定标法"的结果在精度上相当,天卫二的位置精度与其他天王星卫星的位置精度具有较好的一致性,这从另一方面证明了我们的"亮卫星定标法"的可靠性。此外我们还获得了天卫四的位置与精度。  相似文献

UBV observations of the Galilean satellites made at Lowell Observatory and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory during 1973 and 1974 are reported. The dependence of brightness on solar phase angle for various faces of each satellite is determined. Significant differences in this dependence are found between different faces of the same satellite, between satellites, and between the present results and those of previous investigators. Rotational light and color-index curves are presented for the satellites and compared with earlier work. An apparent secular brightening of all four satellites between 1973 and 1974 is discussed.  相似文献

The investigation of the solar wind and geomagnetic activity parameters' effect on variations of the orbital motion periods of artificial satellites has been continued. The periods of orbital motion of uncontrolled satellites from the database of the Ukrainian network of optical stations (UNOS) for 2012–2014 was used. The data have been compared with the values of geomagnetic planetary index K and the energy spectra of protons and electrons obtained by the GEOS satellites in events during which the orbital periods have changed. It is shown that, in the energy spectra of the proton and electron fluxes, there is no effect of softening the spectrum with time at the time of the flare appearance. This indicates the possibility of particle accumulation above the active region (AR), which entails further continuous energy emission of the solar flare from AR. Dependences have been obtained between the geomagnetic activity and the solar wind speed at a given interplanetary magnetic field strength during the periods under study for the changes in the orbital motion periods of satellites. The corresponding correlation coefficients are 0.93–0.96.  相似文献

We present a systematic survey for satellites of Venus using the Baade-Magellan 6.5 m telescope and IMACS wide-field CCD imager at Las Campanas observatory in Chile. In the outer portions of the Hill sphere the search was sensitive to a limiting red magnitude of about 20.4, which corresponds to satellites with radii of a few hundred meters when assuming an albedo of 0.1. In the very inner portions of the Hill sphere scattered light from Venus limited the detection to satellites of about a kilometer or larger. Although several main belt asteroids were found, no satellites (moons) of Venus were detected.  相似文献

The relationship between the k2/Q of the Galilean satellites and the k2J/QJ of Jupiter is derived from energy and momentum considerations. Calculations suggest that the Galilean satellites can be divided into two classes according to their Q values: Io and Ganymede have values between 10 and 50, while Europa and Callisto have values ranging from 200 to 700. The tidal contributions of the Galilean satellites to Jupiter's rotation are estimated. The main deceleration of Jupiter, which is about 99.04% of the total, comes from Io.  相似文献

A detailed computation on the equilibrium structure of an accretion disk around Saturn from which the regular satellites presumably originated is reported. Such a disk is the predecessor of the self-dissipating disk that is formed when the mass infall stops (Cassen and Moosman, 1981, Icarus48, 353–376). When determining the disk structure local energy balance was assumed. Convention was taken into account by introducing local energy dissipation and, in an approximate manner, sonic convection. Changes in the disk structure were investigated by varying the free parameters, i.e., the external flux from both the protosun and the protoplanet, the abundance of dust and the strength of turbulence. It has been verified that the external energy flux does not play an important role in the evolution of the disk structure. Models characterized by either longer times (?3 103 year) or a noticeable depletion of condensable elements (10?2 times less than the solar value) have a total mass of the order of 0.34?0.1 times the mass of the regular satellites increased by the mass of the light elements. Low turbulence models (Reynolds critical number Re1 = 150) are characterized approximately by a total mass twice as large the mass of the regular satellites. All the studied models present a temperature distribution that allows the condensation of iron, silicate, and, in the outer regions, ice grains. All models but the one with 10?2 of the solar value of condensable elements are characterized by a wide convective region that contains the formation zone of the regular satellites.  相似文献

The classical way to treat absorption of solar light in thermophysical modeling of cometary nuclei (and other ice-rich bodies such as jovian satellites) has been to assume complete opaqueness of the surface material. However, as shown by Davidsson and Skorov (2002, Icarus156, 223-248), substantial light penetration can occur in porous ice even if it is very dusty, implying that gradual absorption of energy in a surface layer should be accounted for.We present a thorough comparison between a surface energy absorption model and a layer energy absorption model, for various combinations of heliocentric distances, conductivities, opacities, pore sizes, and rotational periods relevant for cometary nuclei, by fully solving the coupled differential equations of heat transfer and gas diffusion. We find substantial differences between the models in terms of gas production rate, thermal lag angle, surface temperature, and the origin of coma molecules. For example, the surface energy absorption model overestimates the total gas production by a factor of 2-7, underestimates the lag angle by a factor of 2-3, and places the origin of coma molecules at the surface, instead of the near-surface interior.  相似文献

Indications about the spectral distribution of the solar radiation below 20 Å are obtained by comparing the atmospheric extinction of the solar radiation measured by three ion chambers in the satellites SOLRAD 7 and 8.The data refer to July 5, 6 and 8, 1965 and July 23, 1966 when the satellites passed from light to darkness into or out of the earth's shadow.The spectral intensity distribution is shown for the four days, and a comparison is made between active and quiet days.  相似文献

Astrometric and photometric observations of major planets, their satellites and asteroids have been made with the 26-in. refractor of the Pulkovo observatory during the period from 1995 to 2006. The CCD (ST6) and photographic observations were carried out. Accurate relative position of satellites of Jupiter and Saturn have been derived. The positions of Saturn have been calculated using the theoretically predicted coordinates of satellites relative to the planet without measurements of the photographic images of the planet. Also the observations of Hale-Bopp comet and Mercury transit have been made. The 26-in. refractor has been included into the international campaign PHEMU-2003: photometric CCD observations of mutual occultations and eclipses of Galilean satellites. The light curves of the events have been obtained and parameters of the events have been determined.  相似文献

We suggest a new approach and develop an original method for deriving astrometric data from the photometry of mutual occultations and eclipses of planetary satellites. We decide to model not the relative apparent motion of one satellite with respect to another satellite but the deflection of the observed relative motion with respect to the theoretical motion implied by appropriate ephemerides.We have attempted to reduce the results of photometric observations of the Gallilean satellites during their mutual occultations and eclipses in 2002-2003. The data of observation for 319 light curves of 106 mutual events were received from the observers. The reliable 245 light curves were processed with our method. Eighty six apparent relative positions have been obtained.Systematic errors arise inevitably while deriving astrometric data. Most of them are due to factors that are unrelated to the methods for deriving astrometric data. The systematic errors are more likely due to incorrect excluding the effect of background on photometric counts. In the case of mutual occultations, the flux drop is determined to a considerable degree by the ratio of the mean albedos of the two satellites. Some mutual event observations revealed wrong adopted values of the mean albedos.  相似文献

Two series of predictions have been published for the 1973–1974 mutual phenomena of Jupiter's satellites, one (June–October, 1973) by Milbourn and Carey, and the other (February 1973–May 1974) by Brinkmann and Millis. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate some significant discrepancies between these two sets of predictions. New predictions are calculated for the period June 1973–May 1974. They agree very nearly with the predictions by Milbourn and Carey, but frequently differ by several minutes (up to 30 min when Jupiter III and IV are involved) from those by Brinkmann and Millis. Unlike the previous predictions, the new ones also give the estimated light decreases during the phenomena. The method of prediction is documented for future applications to Jupiter's and Saturn's satellites. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the problems involved in extracting information about the positions, radii, and albedos of the satellites from observed light curves.  相似文献

Mutual events between natural satellites include mutual occultation and mutual eclipse. Mutual eclipse is another kind of mutual occultation as viewed from the center of the Sun instead of the Earth. Two mutual eclipses of J2 Europa by J1 Io (2009 Aug. 28 and Sept. 12) were observed at Yunnan Observatory during the PHEMU09 international campaign. Good photographs of Saturn and its five inner satellites were obtained on January 2, 1974 with the 105 cm telescope at Pic du Midi Observatory with exposure times of 45 sec. The spread function is constant over the field, and isotropic. The true photometric profiles of the satellites are obtained after deriving a model for the stray light coming from the rings. The magnitudes, computed by integration, are in good agreement with published values except for Mimas, which is nearly one magnitude fainter then previously believed.  相似文献

Using high-resolution cosmological N -body simulations, we investigate the survival of dark matter satellites falling into larger haloes. Satellites preserve their identity for some time after merging. We compute their loss of mass, energy and angular momentum as they are dissolved by dynamical friction, tidal forces and collisions with other satellites. We also analyse the evolution of their internal structure. Satellites with less than a few per cent of the mass of the main halo may survive for several billion years, whereas larger satellites rapidly sink into the centre of the main halo potential well and lose their identity. Penetrating encounters between satellites are frequent and may lead to significant mass loss and disruption. Only a minor fraction of cluster mass (10–15 per cent on average) is bound to substructure at most redshifts of interest. We discuss the application of these results to the survival and extent of dark matter haloes associated with galaxies in clusters, and to their interactions. We find that a minor fraction of galaxy-size dark matter haloes are disrupted by redshift z  = 0. The fraction of satellites undergoing close encounters is similar to the observed fraction of interacting or merging galaxies in clusters at moderate redshift.  相似文献

Results of observations of the Galilean satellites during the week of the impact of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter are reported. These observations have been carried out at the Pico dos Dias observatory, at Brasópolis, Brazil. The satellites's light flux was monitored with a photometer during the time of the predicted impact of fragments B, F, J and L. No conclusive flash was observed in any of the data adquired.
