The effect of fluctuations of the interplanetary plasma and the ionosphere upon the scintillation spectra of radio sources at decametre waves is considered with due regard for the finite antenna aperture, fluctuation anisotropy, and the direction of their drift in space. It has been shown that scintillation due to interplanetary plasma (IPP), can be reliably separated from the ionospheric scintillation background at decametre wavelengths. For elongations between 90° to 150°, the IPP scintillation power spectrum observed in the 12.6–25 MHz waveband is of a power law form with the index 3.1±0.6, which is in close agreement with the values known for smaller elongations. The solar wind velocity projection orthogonal to the line of sight is estimated for elongations about 110° and has been found to be 300±80 km s–1. As in the case of smaller elongations, the velocity dispersion is significant. At night, wideband spectra of ionospheric scintillations are observed in the decametre band, with the breaking point at approximately 0.01 Hz in the 12 m band, and narrow-band spectra whose cut-off frequency is below 0.01 Hz. The power spectrum of ionospheric scintillations is of a power-law form with the index 3.4±0.5. In some cases steeper spectra are observed.  相似文献

Interplanetary scintillation measurements obtained inside 200 R using the Ooty Radio Telescope during August 1986–April 1991 have been analysed to study the interplanetary disturbances (or events) and their occurrence rates at various phases of the solar cycle. The disturbances are identified by the increase in the level of scintillation compared with the expected value. In total, 735 events have been identified. The results show a rate of 0.49 events per day near solar maximum and a low rate of 0.16 events per day during minimum of activity. The results are compared with coronal mass ejection (CME) rates and transients rates obtained from the Doppler scintillation measurements.  相似文献

Long-term scintillation measurements of the solar wind formation zone at solar elongations ranging from 1°–8° (Sun impact parameters: 4–30 R ) were recorded using the water maser source IRC-20431 at the wavelength =1.35 cm during its annual solar occultations in December 1981–1998. Dramatic changes in the spatial dependence of the scintillation index were recorded over the course of the 11-year solar cycle. Markedly diminished scattering, attributed to a pronounced heliolatitude effect, was observed at the closest solar approach distances in the years around solar activity minimum. From parallel investigations of the solar magnetic field structure it was determined that the field strength at the source of the solar wind streamlines is the governing factor for the solar wind acceleration process. Particularly apparent in the scintillation data during solar activity minimum is the increasing role of the polar coronal holes with their associated open magnetic field structure. The dependence of the solar scattering intensity on heliolatitude fades in the years of high solar activity as the level of scintillations increases at polar latitudes.  相似文献

I present a spatial analysis of the galaxy distribution around the cluster Cl 0024+17. The basic aim is to find the scales where galaxies present a significant deviation from an inhomogeneous Poisson statistical process. Using the generalization of the Ripley, Besag, and the pair correlation functions for non-stationary point patterns, I estimate these transition scales for a set of 1000 Monte Carlo realizations of the Cl 0024+17 field, corrected for completeness up to the outskirts. The results point out the presence of at least two physical scales in this field at 31.4 and 112.9. The second one is statistically consistent with the dark matter ring radius (75) previously identified by Jee [Jee, M.J., 2007. ApJ 661, 728]. However, morphology and anisotropy tests point out that a clump at 120 NW from the cluster center could be the responsible for the second transition scale. These results do not indicate the existence of a galaxy counterpart of the dark matter ring, but the methodology developed to study the galaxy field as a spatial point pattern provides a good statistical evaluation of the physical scales around the cluster. I briefly discuss the usefulness of this approach to probe features in galaxy distribution and N-body dark matter simulation data.  相似文献

In order to increase the corrected field of view of an adaptive optics (AO) system, several deformable mirrors (DM) have to be placed in the conjugate planes of the dominant turbulent layers (multi-conjugate adaptive optics,MCAO (Beckers, 1988)).The performance of MCAO systems depends on the quality of thewavefront sensing ofthe individual layers and on the number of corrected modes in eachindividual layer as in single layer AO systems. In addition, the increase in corrected field of view depends on the number of guide stars providing information about theturbulence over a sufficiently large area in each turbulent layer. In this article, we investigate these points and provide formulae for calculating the increased field of view with a new approach using the spatial correlation functions of the appliedpolynomials (e.g. Zernike). We also present a new scheme of measuring the individual wavefront distortion of each of the dominantlayers with a Shack-Hartmann-Curvature Sensor using gradientinformation as well as scintillation. An example for the performance of a two layer MCAO system is given for the 3.5-m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory, Spain, using ameasured Cn 2-profile. The corrected field of view in K-band(2.2 m) can be as large as 3 arcmin with a Strehl ratio above 60%.  相似文献

The results of a series of 24-hour observations of radio-source interplanetary and ionospheric scintillation performed on April 4–10, 2006, at the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory are presented. The observations were carried out with the Large Phased Array radio telescope of the Lebedev Institute of Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, at a frequency of 110 MHz. The scintillating fluxes of all radio sources that fall within a field of sky between declinations +28° and +31° were automatically recorded applying eight beams of the reception pattern operating simultaneously. All of the sources with flux densities of 0.2 Jy or higher were detected. The structure functions of the flux fluctuations were measured for time shifts 1 and 10 s, which characterize the interplanetary (1 s) and ionospheric (10 s) scintillation, respectively. The mean scintillation index m IPP (on a characteristic time scale of 1 s) of an ensemble of radio sources located within a sky band 4° wide in declination and 1 h wide in right ascension was measured as the parameter that characterizes the interplanetary plasma. Diurnal variations of the interplanetary scintillation index were determined. The maximum m IPP value at daytime equals 0.3, and the minimum value at nighttime equals 0.10. Weak interday variations of the mean daytime and nighttime scintillation indices were detected. The ionospheric scintillation indices m Ion are small compared to m IPP at daytime, but m Ion ? m IPP at nighttime. On the whole, both the interplanetary plasma and ionosphere were quiet during the observations.  相似文献

In Paper I (Hu, 1982), we discussed the the influence of fluctuation fields on the force-free field for the case of conventional turbulence and demonstrated the general relationships. In the present paper, by using the approach of local expansion, the equation of average force-free field is obtained as (1+b)?×B 0=(α#x002B;a)B 0#x002B;a (1)×B 0#x002B;K. The average coefficientsa,a (1),b, andK show the influence of the fluctuation fields in small scale on the configurations of magnetic field in large scale. As the average magnetic field is no longer parallel to the average electric current, the average configurations of force-free fields are more general and complex than the usual ones. From the view point of physics, the energy and momentum of the turbulent structures should have influence on the equilibrium of the average fields. Several examples are discussed, and they show the basic features of the fluctuation fields and the influence of fluctuation fields on the average configurations of magnetic fields. The astrophysical environments are often in the turbulent state, the results of the present paper may be applied to the turbulent plasma where the magnetic field is strong.  相似文献

Solar force-free magnetic fields on and above the photosphere   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
If the problem of a magnetic field being force-free with = constant ( 0) is solved by some previously published methods, then the field obtained in the whole exterior of the Sun cannot have a finite energy content and the solution cannot be determined uniquely from only one magnetic field component given at the photosphere. A magnetic field in the volume between two parallel planes has been investigated by us (Chen and Wang, 1986).Based on observational data we present in this paper a suitable physical model for a half-space and adopted an integral transform established by us (Chen, 1980, 1983) to solve this problem. We then obtain a unique analytical solution of the problem from only one magnetic field component (longitudinal field observed) given at the photosphere. Not only the uniqueness of the solution has been proved but also the finiteness of magnetic energy content in the half-space considered has been verified. We have demonstrated that there is no singular point in the solution. It enables us to describe analytically the configurations of magnetic fields on and above the photosphere.  相似文献

The synoptic map of the solar wind speed (SWS) estimated by the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) method with interplanetary scintillation observations is constructed for the 1909 Carrington rotation. A similar synoptic map of expansion rate (RBR) of the coronal magnetic field calculated by the so-called 'potential model' with the photospheric magnetic field is also constructed under the radial field assumption (RF model). These maps consist of 64800 (180×360) data points of equal area. We examine for the first time relations between the SWS estimated by the CAT technique and the RBR calculated by the RF model. A highly significant correlation is found between the SWS and the RBR. A simple correlation coefficient is about –0.72; that is, high-velocity winds emanate from photospheric areas corresponding to a low expansion rate of the coronal magnetic field, and low-velocity winds emanate from photospheric areas of high expansion rate. This result suggests that there is some acceleration mechanism relating to the coronal field expansion.  相似文献

In recent years, all-sky camera airglow observations of evolving nighttime F-region structures have raised questions regarding the formation and apparent motion of these often wave-like structures. We address these issues using a pseudo-spectral method code developed to numerically solve the Perkins (1973. Spread F and ionospheric currents. J. Geophys. Res. 78, 218-226) moment equations modeling F-region electrodynamics. To aid in interpretation of the results, we utilize a Gaussian shape initial condition of the (geomagnetic field, B, parallel) integrated conductivity under the homogeneous TEC (B-parallel total electron content) condition and a northeastward DC electric field (E-field). We find that the initial Gaussian shape conductivity structure gradually evolves into banded structures oriented along the northwest-southeast direction while the amplitude of the banded structures continues growing and the peak of the structure moves to the northwest due to the E×B drift. The potential distribution corresponding to the initial Gaussian conductivity distribution is more complex but also becomes banded with the same orientation and growing trend as the conductivity. Wave vector domain plots show structure growth in approximately the first and third quadrants and damping in the second and fourth quadrants for both the conductivity and potential, as Perkins predicts—this leads to the orientation of the structures. We note that the evolved banded structures in conductivity and potential are oriented perpendicular to the direction given by half the angle between the DC E-field and east—the direction of maximum instability growth rate predicted by Perkins. The polarization (perturbation) E-field is seen mainly perpendicular to the long axis of the banded structures—i.e., no obvious structure-parallel E-field is observed in the simulation. By tracking the maximum point of the conductivity as a function of time, it is found that the localized structures move northwestward at a nearly constant speed that corresponds to the E×B drift velocity (to within relative errors on the direction and magnitude of ?4%). We also note that the E×B drift velocity has a dominant effect on the speed and propagation direction of the wave-like bands. The “wave” velocity is the projection of the E×B drift velocity on the line perpendicular to the wave front. Thus, the movement of a northwest-southeast oriented band can be decomposed into two components—parallel (to the band, northwestward) and perpendicular (southwestward) motions. A preliminary comparison of these results with an Arecibo all-sky camera observations shows good agreement.  相似文献

When solar wind plasma in the trailing (eastern) edge of a high-speed stream is mapped back to its estimated source in the high corona using the constant radial velocity (EQRH) approximation, a large range of velocities appears to come from a restricted range in longitude, often only a few degrees. This actually constitutes a sharp eastern coronal boundary for the solar wind stream source, and demands that the boundary have a three-dimensional structure. Using interplanetary data, we infer a systematic variation in source altitude (identified approximately with the Alfvén point), with faster solar wind attaining its interplanetary characteristics at lower altitudes. This also affects the accuracy of the source longitude estimates, so that we infer a width in the high corona of 4–6° for the source of the trailing edges of streams which appear to originate from a single longitude. We demonstrate that the possible systematic interplanetary effects (in at least some cases) are not large ( 2° in heliocentric longitude). The relatively sharp boundaries imply that high-speed streams are well-defined structures all the way down to their low coronal sources, and that the magnetic field structure controls the propagation of the plasma through the corona out to the vicinity of the Alfvén point ( 20 R ).  相似文献

Trans-equatorial loops (TLs) are one of the distinct magnetic structures in the solar corona and have a close relationship to solar activity. We present a systematic study of the origin of TLs linking with the Babcock?–?Leighton dynamo process based on the model of Chatterjee, Nandy, and Choudhuri (Astron. Astrophys. 427, 1019, 2004). We propose that TLs are visible signatures of poloidal field lines across the equator. The cycle variation of TL lengths obtained by the connectivities of poloidal field lines happens to be roughly in agreement with what one gets by considering the positions of sunspots. This explains why this cycle variation of TL lengths was found to be in conformity with Spörer’s law. The active regions always make the poloidal field configuration favorable to form TLs, which causes the conformity. The formation of TLs is a three-dimensional problem, which will require three-dimensional dynamo models for full investigation.  相似文献

Recently new calculations for the probability field distribution in plasma generating a new expression for the Debye screening fields was carried out by Martin and Perez (1996). This field is a very accurate solution of the Poisson equation for a point test charge in a plasma described by a uniform charge density at Boltzmann thermal equilibrium. The method that we here present is based mainly on the introduction of this adequate field considering the dependence of the potential with the magnitude of the test charge in the calculus of the distribution. First we find the spectral function F(k) carrying out the Fourier transform of the field which is numerically calculated for each representative value of the variable in k space and then fitting these data in order to get F(k). Thus, after the usual numerical integration on the wave number space d3k, the field strength distribution is achieved. This approximation recovers the Holtsmark distribution in the limit of high temperature, and/or, small densities as also these where 0. As in previous works (Ecker, 1972; Spatschek, 1990) the most probable value of the field decreases as the temperature is reduced, and/or, the density increased.  相似文献

A model for solar quiescent prominences nested in a Figure 8 magnetic field topology is developed. This topology is argued to be the natural consequence of the distention of bipolar regions upward into the corona. If this distention is slow enough so that hydrostatic equilibrium holds approximately along the field lines, the transverse gas pressure forces fall exponentially with height whereas the inward Lorentz forces fall as a power law. At a low height in the corona, the pressure forces cannot balance the Lorentz forces provided the field lines remain tied to the photosphere and an inward collapse with subsequent reconnection at the point of closest approach should occur. Because of initial shear in the magnetic field, the reconnection would produce isolated helices above the point of reconnection since field lines would not interact with themselves but with their neighbors. This resulting topology produces a field above the elevated neutral line which is opposite in polarity to that of the photospheric field as in the current sheet models of Kuperus and Tandberg-Hanssen (1967). Raadu and Kuperus (1973), Kuperus and Raadu (1974), and Raadu (1979) and in agreement with recent observations of Leroy (1982), and Leroy et al. (1983).Assuming the isolated helices formed by reconnection are insulated from coronal thermal conduction and heating, the radiative cooling process and condensation is considered for the temperature range of 104-6000 K. This condensation results in a steady downflow to the bottom of the helices as the temperature scale-height falls, thus forming a dense, cool, prominence at the bottom of the helical configuration resting on the elevated neutral line with the remainder of the helix being essentially evacuated of material. We identify this neutral line at the bottom of the prominence with the sharp lower edge often seen when viewing quiescent prominences side-on and the evacuated helix with the coronal cavity observed around prominences when seen during total eclipses.Downflow speeds associated with the condensation process are calculated for prominence temperatures and yield velocities in the range of the observed downflows of about 1 km s–1.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

It is evident from eclipse photographs that gas-magnetic field interactions are important in determining the structure and dynamical properties of the solar corona and interplanetary medium. Close to the Sun in regions of strong field, the coronal gas can be contained within closed loop structures. However, since the field in these regions decreases outward rapidly, the pressure and inertial forces of the solar wind eventually dominate and distend the field outward into interplanetary space. The complete geometrical and dynamical state is determined by a complex interplay of inertial, pressure, gravitational, and magnetic forces. The present paper is oriented toward the understanding of this interaction. The helmet streamer type configuration with its associated neutral point and sheet currents is of central importance in this problem and is, therefore, considered in some detail.Integration of the relevant partial differential equations is made tractable by an iterative technique consisting of three basic stages, which are described at length. A sample solution obtained by this method is presented and its physical properties discussed. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Helical structures are generally associated with many eruptive solar prominences. Thus, study of their evolution in the solar atmosphere assumes importance. We present a study of a flare-associated erupting prominence of March 11, 1979, with conspicuous helically twisted structure, observed in H line center. We have attempted to understand the role played by twisted force-free magnetic fields in this event. In the analysis, we have assumed that the helical structures visible in H outline the field lines in which prominence tubes are embedded. Untwisting of observed prominence tubes and later, formation of open prominence structures provide evidence of restructuring of the magnetic field configuration over the active region during the course of prominence eruption. Temporal evolution of the force-free parameter is obtained for two main prominence tubes observed to be intertwined in a rope-like structure. Axial electric currents associated with the prominence tubes are estimated to be of the order of 1011 A which decreased with time. Correspondingly, it is estimated that the rate of energy release was 1028 erg s–1 during the prominence eruption.  相似文献

We present the results of magnetic field measurements of four chemically peculiar (CP) stars with helium abundance anomalies which are the members of the Orion stellar association OB1. The stars under study were classified as magnetic by other authors earlier. The present paper contains the results of the extensive study of the stars. Magnetic field measurements allowed us to conclude that HD36540 has a weak field and the longitudinal component B e does not exceed 500 G. The longitudinal field of HD36668 varies with the period P = 2. d 11884 and the amplitude from ?2 to +2 kG. The magnetic field of HD36916 has mainly negative polarity and varies within the range from 0 to ?1 kG with the period P = 1.d 565238. HD37058 is a magnetic star, the longitudinal field of which varies from ?1.2 to +0.8 kG with the period P = 14. d 659. The B e field variability pattern for the stars HD36916 and HD37058 is of a simple harmonic type. The longitudinal field of HD36668 is best described with two combined harmonic functions (“a doublewave”). The variability period of HD36540 is still undetermined. For all the stars from this paper, we measured radial velocities V r, axial rotation rates v e sin i, and determined basic parameters of atmospheres (effective temperatures T eff and gravity acceleration log g). We also estimated masses M, luminosities L, and radii R of the stars.  相似文献

We review observational studies of solar prominences with some reference to theoretical understandings. We lay emphasis on the following findings: (1) An important discovery was made by Leroy, Bommier, and Sahal-Bréchot concerning the direction of the magnetic field inside some high-altitude, high-latitude prominences, where the field vector points in the opposite direction from the one which would be expected from the potential field calculated from the observed photospheric magnetic field. (2) Landman suggests the possibility of a high total density of 10–11 g cm –3 for the main body of quiescent prominences, 50 times higher than the value hitherto believed. (3) Flow patterns, nearly parallel to the magnetic neutral lines, were detected in the 105 K plasma near and in prominences. (4) Coronal loop structures were found overlying prominences as viewed from X-ray photographs. We propose also an evolutionary scheme by taking the magnetic field topologies into account. The fundamental question why a prominence is present remains basically unanswered.  相似文献

The scintillation theory is developed for application to the interstellar medium taking into account both the movement of the pulsars and the movement of the interstellar irregularities. It is shown that the velocity of the drifting pattern differs essentially from that for the pulsars. This difference is due to the medium extent effect and to the motion of the irregularities. The pulsar velocityv 0 and the parameters of the motion of the irregularities ( , ) can be derived from the obtained formulae, using the known parameters of the cross-correlation function of scintillations (V ef, 1,S).In contrast with the interplanetary scintillation, the asymmetry of the form of the cross-correlation function of the interstellar scintillations is caused not only by the motion of the interstellar irregularities, but also by the movement of the source itself.  相似文献
