Phenocryst zoning patterns are used to identify open-systemmagmatic processes in the products of the 2001 eruption of ShiveluchVolcano, Kamchatka. The lavas and pumices studied are hornblende–plagioclaseandesites with average pre-eruptive temperatures of 840°Cand fO2 of 1·5–2·1 log units above nickel–nickeloxide (NNO). Plagioclase zoning includes oscillatory and patchyzonation and sieve textures. Hornblendes are commonly unzoned, but some show simple, multiple or patchy zoning. Apatite microphenocrystsdisplay normal and reverse zoning of sulphur. The textural similarityof patchy hornblende and plagioclase, together with Ba–Srsystematics in patchy plagioclase, indicate that the cores ofthese crystals were derived from cumulate material. Plagioclase–liquidequilibria suggest that the patchy texture develops by resorptionduring H2O-undersaturated decompression. When H2O-saturatedcrystallization recommences at lower pressure, reduced pH2Oresults in lower XAn in plagioclase, causing more Al-rich hornblendeto crystallize. Plagioclase cores with diffuse oscillatory zoning, and unzoned hornblende crystals, probably represent a populationof crystals resident in the magma chamber for long periods oftime. In contrast, oscillatory zoning in the rims of plagioclasephenocrysts may reflect eruption dynamics during decompressioncrystallization. Increasing Fe/Al in oscillatory zoned rimssuggests oxidation as a result of degassing of H2O during decompression.A general lack of textural overlap between phenocryst typessuggests that different phenocryst populations were spatiallyor temporally isolated during crystallization. We present evidencethat the host andesite has mixed with both more felsic and moremafic magmas. Olivine and orthopyroxene xenocrysts with reactionor overgrowth rims and strong normal zoning indicate mixingwith basalt. Sieve-textured plagioclase resulted from mixingof a more felsic magma with the host andesite. The mineralogyand mineral compositions of a mafic andesite enclave are identicalto those of the host magma, which implies efficient thermalquenching, and thus small volumes of intruding magma. Mixingof this magma with the host andesite results in phenocryst zoningbecause of differences in dissolved volatile contents. We suggestthat small magma pulses differentiated at depth and ascendedintermittently into the growing magma chamber, producing incrementalvariations in whole-rock compositions. We have determined the near-solidus melt compositions for peridotiteMM-3, a suitable composition for the production of mid-oceanridge basalt (MORB) by decompression partial melting, at 1 and1·5 GPa. At 1 GPa the MM-3 composition has a subsolidusplagioclase-bearing spinel lherzolite assemblage, and a solidusat 1270°C. At only 5°C above the solidus, 4% meltis present as a result of almost complete melting of plagioclase. This melting behaviour in plagioclase lherzolite is predictedfrom simple systems and previous experimental work. The persistenceof plagioclase to > 0·8 GPa is strongly dependenton bulk-rock CaO/Na2O and normative plagioclase content in theperidotite. At 1·5 GPa the MM-3 composition has a subsolidusspinel lherzolite assemblage, and a solidus at 1350°C.We have determined a near-solidus melt composition at 2% meltingwithin 10°C of the solidus. Near-solidus melts at both 1and 1·5 GPa are nepheline normative, and have low normativediopside contents; also they have the highest TiO2, Al2O3 andNa2O, and the lowest FeO and Cr2O3 contents compared with higherdegree partial melts. Comparison of these near-solidus meltswith primitive MORB glasses, which lie in the olivine-only fieldof crystallization at low pressure, indicate that petrogeneticmodels involving aggregation of near-fractional melts formedduring melting at pressures of 1·5 GPa or less are unlikelyto be correct. In this study we use an experimental approachthat utilizes sintered oxide mix starting materials and peridotitereaction experiments. We also examine some recent studies usingan alternative approach of melt migration into, and entrapmentwithin ‘melt traps’ (olivine, diamond, vitreouscarbon) and discuss optimal procedures for this method. We present the results of a structural and petrological studyof mantle rocks from the strongly dismembered Othris Ophiolite.Part of the mantle section was impregnated with melt, crystallizingplagioclase and clinopyroxene as cumulate phases and refertilizingpreviously depleted peridotites. Melt impregnation occurredlate in the deformation history of the host peridotites. Thedeformation took place at stresses of 13–26 MPa and attemperatures around 1000–1200°C, at the base of thethermal lithosphere. The melt therefore impregnated relativelycold mantle rocks, implying that the thermal lithosphere reachedinto the mantle during magmatic activity. We conclude that theOthris Ophiolite represents a spreading environment with a relativelythick lithosphere, such as that near an axial discontinuityor transform fault of a slow-spreading ridge. The proposed magmaticand deformation history of the peridotites is in agreement withepisodic magmatism at slow-spreading ridges. We thus concludethat the heterogeneous character of the mantle section of theOthris Ophiolite results from melt impregnation processes. Wesuggest that the presence of lherzolitic ophiolite types amongharzburgitic ophiolite types in the Hellenic–Dinaric chainreflects variable degrees of melt impregnation and refertilizationrather than partial melting and melt extraction. Columbia River Basalt Group dikes invade biotite–hornblendetonalite to granodiorite rocks of the Wallowa Mountains. Mostdikes are strongly quenched against wallrock, but rare dikesegments have preserved zones of partial melt in adjacent wallrockand provide an opportunity to examine shallow crustal melting. At Maxwell Lake, the 4 m thick wallrock partial melt zone containsas much as 47 vol. % melt (glass plus quench crystals) aroundmineral reaction sites and along quartz–feldspar boundaries.Bulk compositional data indicate that melting took place underclosed conditions (excepting volatiles). With progressive melting, hornblende, biotite, and orthoclase were consumed but plagioclase, quartz, and magnetite persisted in the restite. Clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, plagioclase, and Fe–Ti oxides were producedduring dehydration-melting reactions involving hornblende andbiotite. Reacting phases became more heterogeneous with progressivemelting; crystallizing phases were relatively homogeneous. Progressivemelting produced an early clear glass, followed by light (high-K)and dark (high-Ca) brown glass domains overprinted by devitrification.Melts were metaluminous and granitic to granodioritic. Thermalmodeling of the partial melt zone suggests that melting tookplace over a period of about 4 years. Thus, rare dikes withmelted margins represent long-lived portions of the ColumbiaRiver Basalt dike system and may have sustained large flows. Fe–Mg exchange is the most important solid solution involvedin partial melting of spinel lherzolite, and the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–FeO(CMASF) is ideally suited to explore this type of exchange duringmantle melting. Also, if primary mid-ocean ridge basalts arelargely generated in the spinel lherzolite stability field bynear-fractional fusion, then Na and other highly incompatibleelements will early on become depleted in the source, and themelting behaviour of mantle lherzolite should resemble the meltingbehaviour of simplified lherzolite in the CMASF system. We havedetermined the isobarically univariant melting relations ofthe lherzolite phase assemblage in the CMASF system in the 0·7–2·8GPa pressure range. Isobarically, for every 1 wt % increasein the FeO content of the melt in equilibrium with the lherzolitephase assemblage, the equilibrium temperature is lower by about3–5°C. Relative to the solidus of model lherzolitein the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system, melt compositionsin the CMASF system are displaced slightly towards the alkalicside of the basalt tetrahedron. The transition on the solidusfrom spinel to plagioclase lherzolite has a positive Clapeyronslope with the spinel lherzolite assemblage on the high-temperatureside, and has an almost identical position in P–T spaceto the comparable transition in the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–Na2O(CMASN) system. When the compositions of all phases are describedmathematically and used to model the generation of primary basalts, temperature and melt composition changes are small as percentmelting increases. More specifically, 10% melting takes placeover 1·5–2°C, melt compositions are relativelyinsensitive to the degree of melting and bulk composition, andequilibrium and near-fractional melting yield similar melt compositions.FeO and MgO are the oxides that exhibit the greatest changein the melt with degree of melting and bulk composition. Theamount of FeO decreases with increasing degree of melting, whereasthe amount of MgO increases. The coefficients for Fe–Mgexchange between the coexisting crystalline phases and melt,KdFe–Mgxl–liq, show a relatively simple and predictablebehaviour with pressure and temperature: the coefficients forolivine and spinel do not show significant dependence on temperature, whereas the coefficients for orthopyroxene and clinopyroxeneincrease with pressure and temperature. When melting of lherzoliteis modeled in the CMASF system, a strong linear correlationis observed between the mg-number of the lherzolite and themg-number of the near-solidus melts. Comparison with meltingin the CMASN system indicates that Na2O has a strong effecton lherzolite melting behaviour only at small degrees of melting. Biotite + plagioclase + quartz (BPQ) is a common assemblagein gneisses, metasediments and metamorphosed granitic to granodioriticintrusions. Melting experiments on an assemblage consistingof 24 vol. % quartz, 25 vol. % biotite (XMg = 0·38–0·40),42 vol. % plagioclase (An26–29), 9 vol. % alkali feldsparand minor apatite, titanite and epidote were conducted at 10,15 and 20 kbar between 800 and 900°C under fluid-absentconditions and with small amounts (2 and 4 wt %) of water addedto the system. At 10 kbar when 4 wt % of water was added tothe system the biotite melting reaction occurred below 800°Cand produced garnet + amphibole + melt. At 15 kbar the meltingreaction produced garnet + amphibole + melt with 2 wt % addedwater. At 20 kbar the amphibole occurred only at high temperature(900°C) and with 4 wt % added water. In this last case themelting reaction produced amphibole + clinopyroxene ±garnet + melt. Under fluid-absent conditions the melting reactionproduced garnet + plagioclase II + melt and left behind a plagioclaseI ± quartz residuum, with an increase in the modal amountof garnet with increasing pressure. The results show that itis not possible to generate hornblende in such compositionswithout the addition of at least 2–4 wt % H2O. This reflectsthe fact that conditions of low aH2O may prevent hornblendefrom being produced with peraluminous granitic liquids fromthe melting of biotite gneiss. Thus growth of hornblende inanatectic BPQ gneisses is an indication of addition of externalH2O-rich fluids during the partial melting event. Composite dykes consisting of leucominette and dacite as wellas discrete dykes and flows of minette and lamproite composition, occur in the Veliki Majdan area, western Serbia. This area ispart of the Serbian Tertiary magmatic province, which consistsof numerous small occurrences of ultrapotassic igneous rocks. The composite dykes have leucominette margins (up to 150 cmthick) enclosing a central part of dacite up to 100 m in width.Between these two lithologies, a decimetre-sized transitionzone may occur. Petrography, mineral chemistry and bulk-rockgeochemistry, including Sr, Nd and Pb isotopes, provide evidencethat the minettes and leucominettes formed by hybridizationbetween a felsic magma similar in composition to dacite anda mantle-derived lamproitic magma. The leucominettes and minettescontain all phenocryst types (biotite, plagioclase, quartz)present in the dacites, but in partly resorbed and reacted form. The mica displays a great diversity of resorption textures asa result of partial dissolution, incipient melting and phlogopitization, suggesting superheating of the felsic melt during hybridization;the mineral modes and mineral compositions of the leucominettesand minettes resemble those in the lamproites. A model for themodification of lamproite melt towards minette is presentedin which minette is formed by mixing of lamproite and <30%felsic magma. The lack of any significant correlation betweenPb isotopic ratios and some of the ‘mixing-indices’(SiO2, Zr, Zr/Nb, 143Nd/144Ndi) recognized in the hybridizationmodel for the Veliki Majdan dykes may be a result of similarityof the Pb-isotopic signature in the two end-members. Highlyphlogopitized biotite xenocrysts in the minettes are ascribedto the retention of volatile components after magma mixing andcrystallization of a new generation of phlogopite from the hybridizedmagma. The magma-mixing model explains the reverse zoning andresorption features of phlogopite macrocrysts commonly recognizedin calcalkaline lamprophyres elsewhere. Therefore, this mixingmechanism may be globally applicable for the origin of minettesassociated with calcalkaline granitic plutonism in post-orogenicsettings. Melt Generation and Movement beneath Theistareykir, NE Iceland   总被引:2,自引:5,他引:2
A detailed study of the volume and composition of all the lavasfrom the Theistareykir segment of the Northern Volcanic Zoneof Iceland was designed to study basaltic melt generation andmovement beneath a spreading ridge. The trace element compositionsof the lavas are variable, and those of melt inclusions in olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase phenocrysts even more so. We showthat this variability can be produced by mixing instantaneousmelts produced by isentropic decompression of mantle whose initialpotential temperature is 1480°C, and that the calculatedvolume and composition of the average melt is consistent withgeophysical and petrological observations. Pressure and temperatureestimates suggest that the phenocrysts form in the upper mantle,at depths of 30–40 km, and trap melts formed at greaterdepths. Some mixing of the instantaneous melts occurs beforethe melt is trapped, and more mixing occurs before the lavasare erupted. A similar model can account for the compositionof melt inclusions from the FAMOUS area of the Mid-AtlanticRidge, and from the Gorda and Juan de Fuca Ridges. The Horoman peridotite complex, Hokkaido, Japan is divided into Lower and Upper zones on the basis of contrasting geological features. The complex recorded a consecutive decompression history in chemical zoning of pyroxenes and plagioclase in plagioclase lherzolite, which is interpreted to have been derived from garnet lherzolite by subsolidus decompression reactions. In the Lower Zone, and earlier decompression history is clearly preserved in large pyroxene porphyroclasts, which show marked M-shaped Al zoning characterized by low Al concentration at the core (Al=0.12/6 oxygens), gradual increase toward the marginal region, and rapid decrease toward the rim. The Ca content in the core is nearly constant (Ca=0.03/6 oxygens) with slight increase toward the margin followed by abrupt decrease toward the rim. The Al and Ca contents in the core of orthopyroxene in plagioclase lherzolite from the Upper Zone (Al=0.22, Ca=0.055/6 oxygens) are much higher than those for the Lower Zone, and the Al content typically decreases monotonously from the core to the rim with several exceptions that show poorly developed M-shaped zoning profiles. The earliest P-T conditions, inferable from the core compositions of pyroxenes are 900–950°C and 20 kbar for the Lower Zone and 1100–1150°C and 20 kbar for the Upper Zone. The increase of Al from the core to the margin is inferred to have resulted from nearly adiabatic decompression from these conditions into spinel peridotite facies. The complex experienced further decompression from the spinel stability field into the plagioclase stability field, which is inferred from plagioclase zoning in fine-grained aggregates composed mostly of plagioclase, chromite spinel, and olivine with minor pyroxenes. The Na-Ca ratio of each plagioclase grain decreases from the core to the rim, suggesting continuous decompression reaction producing olivine and plagioclase from pyroxenes and spinel. The sharp increase in Ca content toward the rim indicates that fairly rapid cooling associated with decompression is necessary to form and preserve the marked zoning. The sharp decrease in Al and Ca contents toward the rim of orthopyroxene was also formed during this final ascent of the complex. The systematic changes of the mineralogic and petrographic features that are gradational between the Lower and Upper zones suggest that the Horoman complex retains a temperature variation from the upper mantle. The Upper Zone is interpreted to have followed a higher temperature decompression path than the Lower Zone and probably represents a relatively hotter portion of a mantle diapir ascending from a depth greater than 60 km in the upper mantle.  相似文献

Mantle peridotites from the Erro–Tobbio (ET) ophioliticunit (Voltri Massif, Ligurian Alps) record a tectono-metamorphicdecompressional evolution, indicated by re-equilibration fromspinel- to plagioclase- to amphibole-facies conditions, andprogressive deformation from granular to tectonite to mylonitefabrics. The peridotites are considered to represent subcontinentallithospheric mantle that was tectonically denuded during riftingand opening of the Jurassic Ligurian Tethys ocean, similar tothe Northern Apennine (External Ligurides) ophiolitic peridotites. We performed chemical and isotopic investigations on selectedgranular and tectonite spinel peridotites and plagioclase tectonitesand mylonites, with the aim of defining the nature of the mantleprotoliths, and to date the onset of exhumation of the ET peridotites.Spinel- and plagioclase-bearing tectonites and mylonites exhibitheterogeneous bulk-rock major and trace element composition, despite rather homogeneous mineral chemistry, thus indicatingthat the ET mantle protoliths record a composite history ofpartial melting and melt migration by reactive porous flow. The lack of correlation between the observed geochemical heterogeneityand the structural type (granular, tectonite, mylonite) indicatesthat the inferred reactive porous flow event preceded the exhumation-relatedlithospheric history of the Erro–Tobbio mantle. The tectono-metamorphicevolution caused systematic chemical changes in minerals: (1)Al decrease in orthopyroxene; (2) Al decrease, and Cr and Tiincrease in spinels; (3) Al and Sr decrease, Cr, Ti, Zr, Sc,V and middle to heavy rare earth element increase and developmentof a negative Eu anomaly in clinopyroxene. The studied sampleshave Nd isotope compositions consistent with a mid-ocean ridgebasalt mantle reservoir. Sm/Nd isotope data on plagioclase andclinopyroxene separates (and corresponding whole rocks) fromtwo plagioclase peridotites, representative of the plagioclase-bearingmylonitic extensional shear zone, have yielded ages of 273 ±16 Ma and 313 ± 16 Ma, for the plagioclase-facies recrystallizationstage, significantly older than the expected Jurassic age. Thisindicates that the Erro–Tobbio peridotites represent subcontinentallithospheric mantle that was tectonically exhumed from spinel-faciesdepths to shallower lithospheric levels during Late Carboniferous–Permiantimes. Our results are consistent with the previously documentedevidence for an extensional regime in the Europe–Adrialithosphere during Late Palaeozoic time, and they representthe first record that extensional mechanisms were also activeat lithospheric mantle levels. Melt inclusion and host glass compositions from the easternend of the Southwest Indian Ridge show a progressive depletionin light rare earth elements (LREE), Na8 and (La/Sm)n, but anincrease in Fe8, from the NE (64°E) towards the SW (49°E).These changes indicate an increase in the degree of mantle meltingtowards the SW and correlate with a shallowing of the ridgeaxial depth and increase in crustal thickness. In addition,LREE enrichment in both melt inclusions and host glasses fromthe NE end of the ridge are compatible with re-fertilizationof a depleted mantle source. The large compositional variations(e.g. P2O5 and K2O) of the melt inclusions from the NE end ofthe ridge (64°E), coupled with low Fe8 values, suggest thatmelts from the NE correspond to a variety of different batchesof melts generated at shallow levels in the mantle melting column. In contrast, the progressively more depleted compositions andhigher Fe8 values of the olivine- and plagioclase-hosted meltinclusions at the SW end of the studied region (49°E), suggestthat these melt inclusions represent batches of melt generatedby higher degrees of melting at greater mean depths in the mantlemelting column. Systematic differences in Fe8 values betweenthe plagioclase- and the olivine-hosted melt inclusions in theSW end (49°E) of the studied ridge area, suggest that theplagioclase-hosted melt inclusions represent final batches ofmelt generated at the top of the mantle melting column, whereasthe olivine-hosted melt inclusions correspond to melts generatedfrom less depleted, more fertile mantle at greater depths. The Atascosa Lookout trachyandesite lava flow is the youngestand most compositionally primitive unit in the middle TertiaryAtascosa–Tumacacori–Cerro Colorado volcanic complex(ATCC). The flow hosts a variety of objects of contrasting origin, including (1) clusters of plagioclase ± chromian diopside, magnesian augite, quartz, hornblende, and orthopyroxene; (2)amoeboid-shaped quartz-bearing enclaves; (3) plagioclase crystalswith a concentric interior zone of small melt inclusions (dustyplagioclase); (4) plagioclase crystals with cores filled withlarge melt inclusions (honeycomb plagioclase); (5) plagioclaseglomerocrysts. The groundmass of the trachyandesitic flow istrachydacite. Some crystal clusters, enclaves, and plagioclaseglomerocrysts are surrounded by diffuse envelopes of trachydacitehigher in K and Mg and lower in Si than the trachydacitic groundmassof the flow. This envelope material is interpreted as foreignmagma that engulfed these objects as it invaded their host magma. Both the crystal clusters and plagioclase glomerocrysts maybe the remains of cumulate crystal layers, disrupted by influxesof magma into their reservoirs. Crystals in the lava flow originatedin at least three distinct magmas and their hybrids. The groundmassof the lava flow preserves evidence for repeated infusion ofenvelope magma into the system. These influxes fueled the invasionof crystal clusters, plagioclase glomerocrysts, enclaves, andswirls of the envelope magma into the groundmass of the AtascosaLookout lava flow. Despite the compositional and textural varietyapparent in the lava flow, the magmas involved in its developmentmay have been genetically closely related. The collection offeatures in the lava flow resulted from the development of compositionallayers in the magma, accumulation of crystal-rich horizons, disturbance of the system by repeated magma influx, and minorcrustal assimilation. The Iceland Deep Drilling Project Well 1 was designed as a 4- to 5-km-deep exploration well with the goal of intercepting supercritical hydrothermal fluids in the Krafla geothermal field, Iceland. The well unexpectedly drilled into a high-silica (76.5 % SiO2) rhyolite melt at approximately 2.1 km. Some of the melt vesiculated while extruding into the drill hole, but most of the recovered cuttings are quenched sparsely phyric, vesicle-poor glass. The phenocryst assemblage is comprised of titanomagnetite, plagioclase, augite, and pigeonite. Compositional zoning in plagioclase and exsolution lamellae in augite and pigeonite record changing crystallization conditions as the melt migrated to its present depth of emplacement. The in situ temperature of the melt is estimated to be between 850 and 920 °C based on two-pyroxene geothermometry and modeling of the crystallization sequence. Volatile content of the glass indicated partial degassing at an in situ pressure that is above hydrostatic (~16 MPa) and below lithostatic (~55 MPa). The major element and minor element composition of the melt are consistent with an origin by partial melting of hydrothermally altered basaltic crust at depth, similar to rhyolite erupted within the Krafla Caldera. Chondrite-normalized REE concentrations show strong light REE enrichment and relative flat patterns with negative Eu anomaly. Strontium isotope values (0.70328) are consistent with mantle-derived melt, but oxygen and hydrogen isotope values are depleted (3.1 and ?118 ‰, respectively) relative to mantle values. The hydrogen isotope values overlap those of hydrothermal epidote from rocks altered by the meteoric-water-recharged Krafla geothermal system. The rhyolite melt was emplaced into and has reacted with a felsic intrusive suite that has nearly identical composition. The felsite is composed of quartz, alkali feldspar, plagioclase, titanomagnetite, and augite. Emplacement of the rhyolite magma has resulted in partial melting of the felsite, accompanied locally by partial assimilation. The interstitial melt in the felsite has similar normalized SiO2 content as the rhyolite melt but is distinguished by higher K2O and lower CaO and plots near the minimum melt composition in the granite system. Augite in the partially melted felsite has re-equilibrated to more calcic metamorphic compositions. Rare quenched glass fragments containing glomeroporphyritic crystals derived from the felsite show textural evidence for resorption of alkali feldspar and quartz. The glass in these fragments is enriched in SiO2 relative to the rhyolite melt or the interstitial felsite melt, consistent with the textural evidence for quartz dissolution. The quenching of these melts by drilling fluids at in situ conditions preserves details of the melt–wall rock interaction that would not be readily observed in rocks that had completely crystallized. However, these processes may be recognizable by a combination of textural analysis and in situ analytical techniques that document compositional heterogeneity due to partial melting and local assimilation.  相似文献

The clinopyroxene–plagioclase–plagioclase dihedralangle, cpp, in gabbroic cumulates records the time-integratedthermal history in the sub-solidus and provides a measure oftextural maturity. Variations in cpp through the Layered Seriesof the Skaergaard intrusion, East Greenland, demonstrate thatthe onset of crystallization of clinopyroxene (within LZa),Fe–Ti oxides (at the base of LZc) and apatite (at thebase of UZb) as liquidus phases in the bulk magma is recordedby a stepwise increase in textural maturity, related to an increasein the contribution of latent heat to the total heat loss tothe surroundings and a reduction in the specific cooling rateat the crystallization front of the intrusion. The onset ofboth liquidus Fe–Ti oxide and apatite crystallizationis marked by a transient increase in textural maturity, probablylinked to overstepping before nucleation. Textural maturationat pyroxene–plagioclase–plagioclase triple junctionseffectively ceases in the uppermost parts of the Layered Seriesas a result of the entire pluton cooling below the closure temperaturefor dihedral angle change, which is 1075°C. Solidificationof the Layered Series of the Skaergaard intrusion occurred viathe upwards propagation of a mush zone only a few metres thick. Andesite and dacite from Barren and Narcondam volcanic islands of Andaman subduction zone are composed of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, olivine, titanomagnetite, magnesio-hornblende and rare quartz grains. In this study, we use the results of mineral chemical analyses of the calc-alkaline rock suite of rocks as proxies for magma mixing and mingling processes. Plagioclase, the most dominant mineral, shows zoning which includes oscillatory, patchy, multiple and repetitive zonation and ‘fritted’ or ‘sieve’ textures. Zoning patterns in plagioclase phenocrysts and abrupt fluctuations in An content record different melt conditions in a dynamic magma chamber. ‘Fritted’ zones (An55) are frequently overgrown by thin calcic (An72) plagioclase rims over well-developed dissolution surfaces. These features have probably resulted from mixing of a more silicic magma with the host andesite. Olivine and orthopyroxene with reaction and overgrowth rims (corona) suggest magma mixing processes. We conclude that hybrid magma formed from the mixing of mafic and felsic magma by two-stage processes – initial intrusion of hotter mafic melt (andesitic) followed by cooler acidic melt at later stage.  相似文献

The Pliocene (7 Ma) Nb-enriched arc basalts of the ValovayamVolcanic Field (VVF) in the northern segment of the Kamchatkaarc, Russia, host abundant mantle xenoliths, including spinelIherzolites. Textural and microstructural evidence for high-temperature,multi-stage, creep-related deformations in spinel Iherzolitessupports a sub-arc mantle derivation. Pyroxene chemistry indicatesthe existence of two compositional suites: (1) a Cr-diopsidesuite with low-Tt, moderate-Al clinopyroxene compositions, and(2) an Al-augite suite with high Al and Tt, and low Cr concentrationsin clinopyroxene. Some spinel lherzolite xenoliths contain metasomaticAl-augite-type clinopyroxene, Al-Tt spinel, and felsic veinssimilar to trondhjemite melt. The Al-augite series xenolithstypically contain high-Na plagioclase, Cr-poor, Al-Fe-Mg andAl-Tt-Fe spinels, with occasional almandine-grossularite garnetand high-Al and -Na pargasitic amphibole. Pyroxene and spinel compositional trends suggest that the Crdiopsideseries xenoliths from the VVF Nb-enriched arc basalts representan island-arc mantle affected by a metasomatic event. Occurrenceof high-Na plagioclase and trondhjemitic veins favors the additionof a metasomatic component with high Na, Al and Si to the northernKamchatka arc mantle. Trondhjemitic veins, representing siliceousslab melts, compositionally exemplify the metasomatic component.Na metasomatism by peridotite-slab melt interaction is an importantmantle hybridization process responsible for arc-related alkalinemagma generation from a veined sub-arc mantle. One of the goals of igneous petrology is to use the subtle andmore obvious differences in the geochemistry of primitive basaltsto place constraints on mantle composition, melting conditionsand dynamics of mantle upwelling and melt extraction. For thisgoal to be achieved, our first-order understanding of mantlemelting must be refined by high-quality, systematic data oncorrelated melt and residual phase compositions under knownpressures and temperatures. Discrepancies in earlier data onmelt compositions from a fertile mantle composition [MORB (mid-oceanridge basalt) Pyrolite mg-number 87] and refractory lherzolite(Tinaquillo Lherzolite mg-number 90) are resolved here. Errorsin earlier data resulted from drift of W/Re thermocouples at1 GPa and access of water, lowering liquidus temperatures by30–80°C. We demonstrate the suitability of the ‘sandwich’technique for determining the compositions of multiphase-saturatedliquids in lherzolite, provided fine-grained sintered oxidemixes are used as the peridotite starting materials, and thechanges in bulk composition are considered. Compositions ofliquids in equilibrium with lherzolitic to harzburgitic residueat 1 GPa, 1300–1450°C in the two lherzolite compositionsare reported. Melt compositions are olivine + hypersthene-normative(olivine tholeiites) with the more refractory composition producinga lower melt fraction (7–8% at 1300°C) compared withthe model MORB source (18–20% at 1300°C). Kilometer-sized, tabular dunite bodies are contained within harzburgite, lherzolite and plagioclase lherzolite host rocks in the Trinity peridotite, northern California. An igneous origin for the dunite by crystal fractionation of olivine from a melt is suggested by their tabular shapes, clots of poikilitic clinopyroxene grains, chromite pods, and by analogy to dunite bodies in the Samail and Vourinos ophiolites (Hopson et al. 1981; Harkins et al. 1980; Moores 1969). However, structures and systematic variations in mineralogy and mineral chemistry suggest that at least the marginal few meters of the bodies are residues produced by extraction of a basaltic component from a plagioclase lherzolite protolith. A model is suggested in which a picritic melt ascended through the upper mantle in vertically oriented channels. Part of the dunite in the tabular bodies was produced by fractional crystallization of olivine from the melt. Additional dunite at the margins of the bodies was formed by extraction of a basaltic component from plagioclase lherzolite wall-rocks during partial assimilation by the picritic melt. The latter process is similar to the wall-rock reaction discussed by Green and Ringwood (1967) and is essentially zone refining of the the mantle wall rocks by the migrating melt. It is significant because it suggests a mechanism in addition to fractional crystallization for enrichment of incompatible elements in basalts.Submitted to Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, April, 1981.
