The aim of this study is to define geochemical and geological patterns, not only inside of Paul de Arzila natural reserve but in the surrounding area. The Correspondence Analysis was used as a discriminate technique to separate previously identified groups, in this case three types of soils (cambisols + luvisols + fluvisols). The purpose was to identify the main chemical association representative for the local types of soils. The results allow us to separate the chemical elements that are related to natural sources from the anthropogenic sources.  相似文献

The threshold between geochemical background and anomalies can be influenced by the methodology selected for its estimation. Environmental evaluations, particularly those conducted in mineralized areas, must consider this when trying to determinate the natural geochemical status of a study area, quantifying human impacts, or establishing soil restoration values for contaminated sites. Some methods in environmental geochemistry incorporate the premise that anomalies (natural or anthropogenic) and background data are characterized by their own probabilistic distributions. One of these methods uses exploratory data analysis (EDA) on regional geochemical data sets coupled with a geographic information system (GIS) to spatially understand the processes that influence the geochemical landscape in a technique that can be called a spatial data analysis (SDA). This EDA–SDA methodology was used to establish the regional background range from the area of Catorce–Matehuala in north-central Mexico. Probability plots of the data, particularly for those areas affected by human activities, show that the regional geochemical background population is composed of smaller subpopulations associated with factors such as soil type and parent material. This paper demonstrates that the EDA–SDA method offers more certainty in defining thresholds between geochemical background and anomaly than a numeric technique, making it a useful tool for regional geochemical landscape analysis and environmental geochemistry studies.  相似文献

Fluoride (F?) is an indispensable element for the human’s skeletal and dental health at prescribed levels and becomes lethal at higher levels. Spatial–temporal variability of F? and its geochemical control/association with other dissolved ions in groundwater in the Dindigul district of Tamilnadu (India) were conducted to describe the geochemical dynamics of F in response to seasonal variability. High concentrations of fluoride (≥1.5 mg L?1) were observed in the northern region of the district. High levels of F? were observed in non-monsoon periods and low levels in monsoon, because of dilution by precipitation. Bicarbonate was well correlated with F? which explains that both ions were derived from the weathering. While F? has a very weak correlation with silica, this implies that the silicate weathering does not supply F? to the groundwater system. The F? pollution in Dindigul groundwaters is mainly driven by two factors: (1) the geogenic weathering inputs, the geology of this area mainly comprises fluoride bearing minerals (e.g. hornblende biotite gneiss and charnockite); (2) the anthropogenic inputs (agri-fertilizers and tannery waste). Further, F? in the study area is mainly attributed to geogenic sources during pre and postmonsoons and anthropogenic sources in monsoon periods.  相似文献

The lower Liaohe River Plain (LRP) is an economically and ecologically important area situated on an alluvial plain, where anthropogenic activities are very intensive. Field investigations were conducted in the LRP and 15 water quality parameters surveyed at 216 wells during September and October of 2009 and 2010. These showed significant variation in the hydrochemistry of groundwater throughout the plain. A Piper plot was used to identify the major geochemical processes occurring in the entire plain. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to identify various underlying natural and anthropogenic processes that created these distinct water types. The Stuyfzand classification was used to subdivide and interpret the complex groundwater hydrochemistry of the Liaohe River delta. Five principal components (PCs) were extracted in terms of PCA, which can be invoked to explain 82% of the total variance in water quality parameters. The PCA results can be categorized by five major factors: (1) Holocene transgression and mixing; (2) surface water infiltration; (3) multi-factor processes; (4) rainfall and agricultural fertilizer contamination; and (5) Geogenic F enrichment. This study demonstrates that the great variation of groundwater hydrochemistry in the LRP should be attributed to both natural and anthropogenic processes.  相似文献

In this study, hydrogeologic and hydrochemical information from the Mersin-Erdemli groundwater system were integrated and used to determine the main factors and mechanisms controlling the chemistry of groundwaters in the area and anthropogenic factors presently affecting them. The PHREEQC geochemical modeling demonstrated that relatively few phases are required to derive water chemistry in the area. In a broad sense, the reactions responsible for the hydrochemical evolution in the area fall into four categories: (1) silicate weathering reactions; (2) dissolution of salts; (3) precipitation of calcite, amorphous silica and kaolinite; (4) ion exchange. As determined by multivariate statistical analysis, anthropogenic factors show seasonality in the area where most contaminated waters related to fertilizer and fungicide applications that occur during early summer season.  相似文献

This paper reports new geochemical data on dissolved major and minor constituents in surface waters and ground waters collected in the Managua region (Nicaragua), and provides a preliminary characterization of the hydrogeochemical processes governing the natural water evolution in this area. The peculiar geological features of the study site, an active tectonic region (Nicaragua Depression) characterized by active volcanism and thermalism, combined with significant anthropogenic pressure, contribute to a complex evolution of water chemistry, which results from the simultaneous action of several geochemical processes such as evaporation, rock leaching, mixing with saline brines of natural or anthropogenic origin. The effect of active thermalism on both surface waters (e.g., saline volcanic lakes) and groundwaters, as a result of mixing with variable proportions of hyper-saline geothermal Na–Cl brines (e.g., Momotombo geothermal plant), accounts for the high salinities and high concentrations of many environmentally-relevant trace elements (As, B, Fe and Mn) in the waters. At the same time the active extensional tectonics of the Managua area favour the interaction with acidic, reduced thermal fluids, followed by extensive leaching of the host rock and the groundwater release of toxic metals (e.g., Ni, Cu). The significant pollution in the area, deriving principally from urban and industrial waste-water, probably also contributes to the aquatic cycling of many trace elements, which attain concentrations above the WHO recommended limits for the elements Ni (∼40 μg/l) and Cu (∼10 μg/l) limiting the potential utilisation of Lake Xolotlan for nearby Managua.  相似文献

Two approaches, factor analysis (FA) and self-organising maps (SOM), have been used for the determination of geochemical associations in the two case studies evaluated here. In both case studies, different associations of elements, derived from different anthropogenic sources (smelters, ironworks, and chemical industry), are presented, together with natural associations of elements, all representing different geological environments. FA and SOM give similar results, despite some differences. Most similarities were achieved with the group of elements affected by strong pollution caused by smelting activities. The biggest difference between the two is that SOM can combine different groups into one, especially in the case of associations of elements connected with mild pollution (ironworking, chemical industry). The biggest advantage of SOM as opposed to FA is that SOM allow us to process variables, which are not normally distributed, or even of attributive nature. The use of such variables in SOM classification to prove the origins of associations of elements is also demonstrated here.  相似文献

Thirty-four chemical elements, pH, total nitrogen, and total organic carbon were determined in 49 bottom sediment samples from the whole High Dam Lake in order to improve our understanding of geochemical characteristics of these sediments and geochemical patterns of trace elements and related feeding sources. The present study revealed that the lake were clearly discriminated into three portions in accordance with the sediment geochemistry and geographic position. Likewise, the analyzed elements in the entire lake sediments were classified into six geochemical association patterns that are indicative of the contributing geogenic and anthropogenic sources. As has been noted here, mineralogy, anthropogenic inputs, pH, and organic matter had significant roles in controlling the behavior, concentration, dispersion, and geochemical patterns of the trace elements in the lake sediments. Consequently, the elevated concentration of Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sc, V, Y, and Zn posed moderate contamination level in the sediments. At the same time, the enhancement of Ag, Se, and Te levels caused contamination up to very high levels. Admittedly, the contamination levels were generated by natural and human activities that are coming from the Nile basin countries. Despite progressive deterioration of these sediments, they still have economic applications.  相似文献

This paper provides an overview of regional geochemical mapping using stream sediments from central and south-western Nigeria. A total of 1569 stream sediment samples were collected and 54 major and trace elements determined by ICP-MS and Au, Pd and Pt by fire assay. Multivariate statistical techniques (e.g., correlation analysis and principal factor analysis) were used to explore the data, following appropriate data transformation, to understand the data structure, investigate underlying processes controlling spatial geochemical variability and identify element associations. Major geochemical variations are controlled by source geology and provenance, as well as chemical weathering and winnowing processes, more subtle variations are a result of land use and contamination from anthropogenic activity.  相似文献

In order to investigate the application of the elemental abundance of boron and its stable isotopes, 10B and 11B, for tracing anthropogenic contamination of variably mineralized thermal and mineral waters, B concentrations and isotopic compositions (δ11B) were determined for sample pairs collected during surveys in 1984–1986 and 1995 from representative wells discharging water from deep crustal reservoirs within the central European crystalline basement and sedimentary cover (SW Germany and N Switzerland). The data presented show that natural temporal variations in the total B contents of thermal and mineral waters are a common feature, which makes it difficult to recognize admixture of extraneous (anthropogenic) components from B concentrations alone. Delineation of the natural versus anthropogenic origin of solutes and quantification of the relative mixing proportions may thus benefit considerably from the utilization of boron isotopes as an additional parameter. Hypothetical mixing scenarios involving various thermal waters and municipal wastewater effluents from the study area, with the latter being characterized by conspicuously light boron isotopic compositions, reveal that, in certain cases, δ11B values provide a superior diagnostic tool for detection of objectionable substances derived from the discharge of man-made boron products. International agreements (e.g. OSPAR) on the release of hazardous substances into the marine environment and environmental assessments of shelf seas require that concentrations and bioavailability of metals from anthropogenic sources can be distinguished from those originating as a result of natural geological processes. The development of a methodology for distinguishing between anthropogenic and natural sources of metals entering the Irish Sea through river inputs is described. The geochemistry of stream, river and estuarine sediments has been used to identify background geochemical signatures, related to geology, and modifications to these signatures by anthropogenic activities. The British Geological Survey (BGS) geochemical database, based on stream sediments from 1 to 2 km2 catchments, was used to derive the background signatures. Where mining activity was present, the impact on the signature was estimated by comparison with the geochemistry of sediments from a geologically similar, but mining free, area. River sediment samples taken upstream and downstream of major towns were used respectively to test the validity of using stream sediments to estimate the chemistry of the major river sediment and to provide an indication of the anthropogenic impact related to urban and industrial development. The geochemistry of estuarine sediments from surface samples and cores was then compared with river and offshore sediment chemistry to assess the importance of riverine inputs to the Irish Sea. Studies were undertaken in the Solway, Ribble, Wyre and Mersey estuaries. The results verify that catchment averages of stream sediments and major river samples have comparable chemistry where anthropogenic influences are small. Major urban and industrial (including mining) development causes easily recognised departures from the natural multi-element geochemical signature in river sediment samples downstream of the development and enhanced metal levels are observed in sediments from estuaries with industrial catchments. Stream sediment chemistry coupled with limited river and estuarine sampling provides a cost-effective means of identifying anthropogenic metal inputs to the marine environment. Investigations of field and laboratory protocols to characterise biological impact (bioaccumulation) of metals in sediments of the Irish Sea and its estuaries show that useful assessments can be made by a combination of surveys with bioindicator species such as clams Scrobicularia plana, selective sediment measurements that mimic the ‘biologically available’ fractions, and laboratory (mesocosm) studies.  相似文献

Regional stream sediment surveys at a 1:200,000 scale reveal positive and negative regional multi-element geochemical anomalies over medium to large copper-polymetallic orefields of different genetic types in China. Regional geochemical anomalies of orefield refer to those geochemical anomalies that are related to metallogenesis of an orefield in a certain area. The anomaly area is typically 10 to 100 km2. The regional multi-element anomalies related to mineralization can be divided into three groups, that is, the ore-element anomaly association, indicator element anomaly association, and metallogenic environmental element anomaly association. Their common spatial distributions over ore deposits or orefields possess unique structures. The model of spatial structure of regional multi-element geochemical anomalies (RAGSS) of an orefield delineates structural feature possessed by orderly spatial distributions of different groups of multi-element anomaly associations related to orefield metallogenesis. Analysis and calculation techniques of geochemical background concentrations of chemical elements in various systems is of paramount importance for applied geochemistry. Herein we assume the geochemical background as the average of natural variations in the concentrations of chemical elements determined at a territory that highly probable does not host any natural and/or anthropogenic sources of contaminating chemical elements. In the context of determining geochemical background, our research was focused on determining the concentrations of heavy metals in soils in the city of Yerevan with the application of an integrated approach. Comparison of the obtained background values with the mean concentrations of elements in the upper continental crust yields representative data, and the application of various statistical tests (±3σ, ±2σ, and boxplots) is proved to equally efficient.  相似文献

The soil geochemical baseline is an important index in environmental assessment. Detailed baseline studies are necessary in large areas with complex geological settings, landforms and soil types. The Jianghan plain, a major industrial and agricultural region located in central China, has a soil geochemical baseline that has yet to be fully defined. The objective of this paper is to study the baseline of Cd, Pb and Zn in the topsoil of the Jianghan plain in a subarea using principal component regression (PCR). A total of 9030 samples were collected from the surface layer, and 2 soil profiles and 2 sedimentary columns were sampled near the Yangtze and Han rivers. Fifty-two elements and two parameters were analyzed. Data processing and the creation of spatial distribution maps of the elements were performed using MapGIS, R and SPSS software. The results show that the distributions of Cd, Pb and Zn are mainly controlled by parent material, drainage system and soil type. The study area is divided into 3 subareas, with factors reflecting the physico-chemical characteristics of the soil using factor analysis (FA). The geochemical baseline model is established in every subarea to predict the Cd, Pb and Zn values using principal component regression analysis (PCR); the exceptional values (as a result of anthropogenic input or mineralization) are distinguished by residuals (γ); and the natural background values and anthropogenic contributions are clearly distinguished. Therefore, the PCR method in these subareas is objective and reasonable, and the conclusion provides effective evidence of exceptional high values for further environmental assessment.  相似文献

Groundwater samples were collected from 25 sampling sites of the Oropos–Kalamos basin aiming to describe the groundwater quality in relation to geology, lithology and anthropogenic activities of the study area. Chromium speciation analysis, factor analysis, GIS database and geochemical data proved successful tools for the identification of natural and anthropogenic factors controlling the geochemical data variability and for the identification of the redox couple controlling Cr speciation. A Durov diagram is used to classify groundwater quality into five types: Ca–HCO3, Mg–HCO3, Na–Cl, Mg–Cl and Ca–Cl. The groundwater quality of Oropos–Kalamos is influenced by various natural and anthropogenic factors. Evaluation of water quality for drinking and irrigation purposes is discussed.  相似文献

Overbank sediment profiles from floodplains in England and Wales contain a record of both natural geochemical patterns and those showing the influence of man's activities. It has been suggested that this characteristic can be used to allow maps to be compiled which show human impact on the fluvial geochemical environment. Studies reviewed in this paper, however, show that a single overbank profile very rarely spans the period from before anthropogenic disturbance through to the Industrial Revolution and later. Significant lateral variations in metal concentrations occur also over a relatively small area in overbank sediments of the same general age. These, and the nature of vertical changes in chemistry, make the choice of sample sites, and sampling interval within a profile, difficult. Even sediments which appear uncontaminated may record anthropogenic influences from activities such as deforestation and agriculture. A means of dating the sediment and an appreciation of river erosion and sedimentation histories are shown to be essential in order to ensure that maps intended to depict natural geochemical variations are based on material deposited before disturbance of the catchment by human activity. These considerations and associated costs may render overbank sediment non-viable as a regional geochemical mapping medium.  相似文献
