Contamination of Hospital Wastewater with Hazardous Compounds as Defined by § 7a WHG In total, 45 samples of hospital wastewater obtained from different origins (total wastewater, nursing, and laboratories) were investigated using chemical analyses as well as biological testing methods. In parallel, the consumption of several product groups relevant to the wastewater has been calculated. The water consumption strongly influenced the quality of the corresponding wastewater. Most of the values of the chemical parameters determined were found within a range as would have been expected for municipal wastewater. The AOX concentrations were distinctly elevated (0.41 mg/L in total wastewater and 0.95 mg/L in nursing wastewater). As could be shown by the calculated consumption of different compounds, the iodoferous X-ray contrast media represented a predominant proportion of the total AOX load of the clinical wastewaters tested. The values of some of the total wastewater samples and the laboratory wastewater samples showed a high toxicity as determined using the daphnia and luminescent bacteria tests. Using Ames and hamster cell tests, 5 out of 23 samples in the clinical area and 7 out of 9 samples from the laboratories turned out to be mutagenic. The origin of this mutagenic potential could not be determined though.  相似文献

A larch forest in eastern Siberia was characterized by the presence of two distinct storeys, the overstorey with a small leaf area index (LAI) and a dense understorey with a relatively large LAI. To understand the roles of the overstorey and understorey in forest–atmosphere water exchange, canopy conductance (Gc), a critical parameter used in determining the energy and mass exchange, was calculated on the basis of latent heat flux above the overstorey and understorey, measured separately. Results showed that Gc for the overstorey (Gco) and understorey (Gcu) experienced different seasonal fluctuations. Gco was smaller than Gcu during periods of leaf expansion and leaf fall and showed an increasing trend until 1 month after the onset of leaf expansion. In contrast, a sharp decrease in Gco was observed immediately before onset of leaf fall. Furthermore, Gco was slightly larger than Gcu during the fully foliated period. A simple model using solar radiation and vapour pressure deficit (D) as inputs successfully reproduced the Gc in fully foliated periods with acceptable accuracy. Furthermore, both the understorey and overstorey in this study have a large reference Gc (Gc at D = 1 KPa) than their counterparts of other boreal forests and would not be able to sustain a constant leaf–soil water potential difference as D increases. We speculated that this confers the forest with an advantage allowing it to be able to sustain carbon assimilation during large D days and thus provides for the survival of the ecosystem during the short growing season at this site. A biotest system for environmentally realistic exposure of fish to produced water (PW) was developed and tested. Authentic PW was collected at an oil production platform in the North Sea and preserved by freezing in multiple aliquots a 25 L. After transport to the test laboratory onshore, daily PW aliquots were thawed, homogenised and administered to the test fish, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), in two diluted exposure concentrations, 0.1% and 0.5%, during a 15 d period, using a continuous flow-through exposure setup. Positive control groups were exposed to two crude oil treatments for comparison. Chemical analyses showed that alkylphenol (AP) and PAH concentrations in PW exposure waters were very low. Observations of significantly increased AP and PAH metabolite levels in PW exposed fish demonstrated the suitability of the biotest system for its use in biological exposure/effect studies of PW, and it also demonstrated the sensitivity of bile metabolites as PW exposure markers in fish. The relevance of the biotest system for PW effect studies and for validating modelled environmental risk estimates of PW dischargers from offshore oil production is discussed.  相似文献

Breeding ornamental fish in wastewater was a successful solution not only to decrease sanitary risks but also to encourage fish growth. In fact, the secondary treated effluent was used to grow a walking catfish (Clarias batrachus), a western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis; Poeciliidae), and a leopard pleco (Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps). The growth rate of fish reared in final treated wastewater was significantly higher than of treated effluent (25 and 50%) and the relative growth rate during 2 months reached 2, 4, and 2.5, respectively. Bacterial loads were important in the gills compared to other fish organs (intestine, skin, and edible muscles). However, the total aerobic germs ranged between 2 × 103 and 3.4 × 103 cfu/g in the edible fish species cultured in secondary treated effluent. The pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas hydrophila was absent in all examined fish muscles. However, the presence of tested fishes did not prevent the reduction of the treatment biological parameter (BOD and COD) at half, in the three treated wastewater proportions (25, 50, and 100%) and thereafter, they clearly participated to the tertiary biological treatment of used water. Further bacteriological and physico‐chemical analyses indicated that the use of treated wastewater in aquaculture is safe and risks to human health are reduced.  相似文献

Many free and forced vertical vibrations tests were conducted on surface and embedded models for footings on dry and moist poorly graded sand that has the following properties: D10 = 0·21 mm, D30 = 0·305 mm, D60 = 0·423 mm, Cu = 2, Cc = 1·05, Gs = 2·66, γmax = 1·74 cm−3 and γmin = 1·4 g cm−3. The tests were conducted at relative density Dr = 82%. The effect of mass, area, geometry, embedment, saturation, load amplitude and frequency were studied. For this purpose square, rectangular and circular models of concrete footings were chosen. Swieleh sand was chosen as the foundation soil. Results have been obtained for models having different mass, same base shape and area; models of different base area and equal base shape and mass; and models of different base shape geometry and about equal masses and base areas.Forced vertical vibration tests results showed an increase in natural frequency and a reduction in amplitude with the increase in embedment depth, degree of saturation and footing base area. Increasing the mass of model footing resulted in a decrease in the natural frequency while the dynamic response increased. Also, results showed that the circular model footing gives low values of dynamic response in comparison to other models.Free vertical vibration test results showed an increase in damping ratio with increase in the base area of the model footing, depth of embedment and saturation of sand. On the other hand, the results showed a decrease in damping ratio with increase in the footing mass. Circular footing gives the highest value of damping ratio among other footings.Results showed that the best method for evaluating the dynamic stiffness for vertical vibration is using Dobry and Gazetas1 (J. Geotech. Engng, ASCE, 1986, 112, 109–133) equations together with the formula proposed by Ronald and Bojan2 (J. Geotech. Engng, ASCE, 1995, 121, 274–286) for evaluating the equivalent shear modulus.  相似文献

In order to evaluate factors controlling transpiration of six common eastern deciduous species in North America, a model describing responses of canopy stomatal conductance (GS) to net radiation (RN), vapor pressure deficit (D) and relative extractable soil water (REW) was parameterized from sap flux data. Sap flux was measured in 24 mature trees consisting of the species Carya tomentosa, Quercus alba, Q. rubra, Fraxinus americana, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Liquidambar styraciflua in a bottomland oak-hickory forest in the Duke Forest, NC. Species differences in model coefficients were found during the 1997 growing season. All species showed a reduction in GS with increasing D. RN influenced GS in the overstory shade intolerant L. styraciflua to a larger extent than the other species measured. In addition, despite a severe drought during the study period, only L. tulipifera showed a decline in GS with decreasing REW. The primary effect of the drought for the other species appeared to be early autumn leaf senescence and abscission. As a result, despite the drought in this bottomland forest accustomed to ample water supply, maximum daily transpiration (1.6 mm) and growing season transpiration (264 mm) were similar to a nearby upland forest measured during a year of above average precipitation. These results may aid in assessing differences in water use and the ability of bottomland deciduous species to tolerate alterations in the frequency or amount of precipitation. Results also suggest little variation in water use among forests of similar composition and structure growing in different positions in the landscape and subjected to large interannual variation in water supply.  相似文献

Landscape‐scale variation in rock fragments on soil‐mantled hillslopes is poorly understood, despite the potential importance of rock fragments in soil weathering and coarse sediment supply to river networks. We explored the utility of soil survey databases for data mining, with the goals of identifying landscape‐scale patterns in the abundance and size distribution of rock fragments (diameter D > 2 mm) and potential controls on grain size production. We focus on data from three regions: the Hawaiian Islands, and the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains, where elevation transects span a range of environmental conditions. We selected pedons from pits dug on hillslopes with active soil production and transport. For the 27 pedons selected, we constructed depth‐averaged grain size distributions and calculated the mass fraction of rock fragments (FRF) and the median rock fragment grain size (D50RF). We also categorized as bimodal, size distributions with a clear ‘breakpoint’ between fine and coarse modes. Several strong patterns emerge from the data. We find rock fragments in 85% of the pedons, primarily in distinct coarse modes within bimodal size distributions. Values of FRF and D50RF are strongly correlated, although the best‐fit power law scaling between FRF and D50RF differs between the warmer Hawaiian, and colder Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountain sites. We also find a regional contrast in the variation in FRF with elevation; FRF declines with elevation in Hawaii, but increases in the mainland sites. Although this contrast could be an artifact of variable lithology, precipitation may influence many patterns in the data. Lower mean‐annual precipitation correlates with higher FRF, dominantly bimodal distributions and surface enrichment in the vertical distribution of rock fragments. These observations may be useful in refining models of coarse sediment supply to rivers, and suggest opportunities for future work to test mechanistic hypotheses for rock fragment production on soil‐mantled hillslopes. The study of bedload transport processes is constrained by an inability to monitor the mass, volume and grain size distribution of sediment in transport at high temporal frequencies. Building upon a previously published design, we have integrated a high‐resolution (1392 × 1024 pixels) video camera with a light table to continuously capture images of 2–181 mm material exiting a flume. The images are continuously recorded at a rate of 15 to 20 frames per second and are post‐processed using LabView(?) software, yielding continuous grain‐size‐specific transport information on a per second basis. The video capture rate is sufficient to record multiple images of each grain leaving the flume so that particle velocities can be measured automatically. No manual image processing is required. After calibration the method is accurate and precise for sediment in the 2 mm through to 45 mm grain size classes compared with other means of measuring bedload. Based on a set of validation samples, no statistically significant difference existed between the D10, D16, D25, D50, D75, D84, D90 and D95 determined by sieving captured samples and the Di values determined with the system. On average the system overpredicted transport by 4 per cent (n = 206, SD = 42%). This error can be corrected easily by simply weighing the mass of sediment that leaves the flume. This experimental research deals with using steel scrap as a heterogeneous catalyst. This catalyzes the oxidation reaction of real textile dye wastewater based on a modified solar photo‐Fenton oxidation process. Morphologic analysis and mapping of the elementary composition of the steel scrap have been carried out by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of concentration of H2O2, the pH of the solution and the catalyst loading on the degradation of textile dye wastewater are elucidated. Kinetic studies have been performed for the decolorization of wastewater under optimum conditions. It could be concluded that the steel scrap is a potential substitute for ferrous salts as a catalyst for the solar photo‐Fenton reaction.  相似文献

We present a set of river management tools based on a recently developed method for estimating the amount of salmon spawning habitat in coarse‐bedded rivers. The method, which was developed from a mechanistic model of redd building by female salmon, combines empirical relationships between fish length, redd area, and the sizes of particles moved by fish during spawning. Model inputs are the grain‐size indices D50 and D84 and an estimate of female fish length, which is used to predict the size of the redd that they will build and the size of the largest particle that they can move on the bed. Outputs include predictions of the fraction of the bed that the fish can use for redd building and the number of redds that they can build within the useable area. We cast the model into easy‐to‐use look‐up tables, charts, an Excel worksheet, a JavaScript web applet, and a MATLAB user interface. We explain how these tools can be used in a new, mechanistic approach to assessing spawning substrates and optimizing gravel augmentation projects in coarse‐bedded rivers. © 2016 The Authors. Wastewater production in a hospital laundry and the treatment of the most critical wastewater stream, are assessed. Hospital laundry wastewaters are hazardous to the environment due to their high pollutant concentrations and the chemicals added during the clothes washing process. Heterogeneous photocatalysis with UV, O3 and TiO2 and their possible combinations were used for disinfection purposes. A ramp‐type reactor was used for TiO2 (P25 Degussa) fixation and for photochemical diffusion of the ozonized air. After assessing 5‐day biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, pH, turbidity, and surfactant content, and checking for the presence of thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli, it was concluded that UV/O3/TiO2 was the best process/combination, yielding a 100% disinfection rate and a microbiological inactivation of 0.5070 min–1 for E. coli and of 0.5505 min–1 for thermotolerant coliforms.  相似文献

A series of cyclic triaxial tests on clayey sands was carried out and attempts were made to evaluate the strain dependency of shear modulus and damping. Strain dependencies of shear modulus and damping were simply modeled. It was shown that the change in the effective confining stress with loading cycles in the undrained shear test needed to be considered particularly in the large strain range. The consideration could be made by normalizing G with G0=AF(e)(σ′mmr)n, the initial shear modulus for the effective confining stress of that particular loading cycle, instead of using G0. G/G0 was expressed by a function of γ as G/G0=1/(1+bgγ) which was almost stress level independent for clayey sands used in this study. The damping ratio was not much affected by the confining stress. The strain dependency of the damping ratio was modeled by h=ahγ/(1+bhγ). Effects of load irregularity on the shear modulus were also investigated. The excess pore pressure and the residual strain were generated especially when the major peaks in the irregular loading were applied to the specimen. However, G/G0 for the irregular loading could be represented reasonably well by the average curve for the uniform cyclic loading, if the excess pore water pressure and the residual strain were taken into account.  相似文献

Abstract

We discuss the steady states of the αω-dynamo in a thin disc which arise due to α-quenching. Two asymptotic regimes are considered, one for the dynamo numberD near the generation thresholdD 0, and the other for |D| ? 1. Asymptotic solutions for |D—D 0| ? |D 0| have a rather universal character provided only that the bifurcation is supercritical. For |D| ? 1 the asymptotic solution crucially depends on whether or not the mean helicity α, as a function ofB, has a positive root (hereB is the mean magnetic field). When such a root exists, the field value in the major portion of the disc is O(l), while near the disc surface thin boundary layers appear where the field rapidly decreases to zero (if the disc is surrounded by vacuum). Otherwise, when α = O(|B|?s) for |B| → ∞, we demonstrate that |B| = O(|D|1/s ) and the solution is free of boundary layers. The results obtained here admit direct comparison with observations of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies, so that an appropriate model of nonlinear galactic dynamos hopefully could be specified.  相似文献

Recycling domestic wastewaters is one way to maximize the utilization of freshwater. Although sewage treatment plants help to remove particulate wastes, organic matter still remains, which can be used to harvest sizeable populations of zooplankton. In an effort to identify cladocerans which could grow on this organic matter, we tested the life table demography of the commonly found cladocerans (Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Moina macrocopa, and Daphnia pulex) feeding on wastewater at three different stages of purification (tank that receives crude wastes (A), the biological reactor (B), and the penultimate stage of the treatment process (C)) from the Iztacalco water treatment plant in Mexico City. Experiments were conducted using the medium from each of the 3 tanks previously mentioned and a control of Chlorella vulgaris at 1.0 × 106 cells mL?1. We found that the average lifespan ranged from 5…30 days with D. pulex living the longest. The growth rate, which ranged from ?0.57 to +1.5 was highest for M. macrocopa. Our data indicate that Moina macrocopa, which had higher reproductive rates on wastewater than the controls, was most suited for growing in wastewaters.  相似文献

Although the Shields relation was developed for rivers, it has been applied to sediment transport by overland flow. According to the Shields relation, where the critical boundary Reynolds number Re*c exceeds 40, the critical Shields number F*c is independent of both Re*c and the ratio of the critical flow depth to particle diameter dc/D. Analyses of data collected from runoff plots in southern Arizona reveal that F*c is positively correlated with both Re*c and dc/D. Thus the Shields relation does not apply to overland flow on debris-covered desert hillslopes. Multiple regression analysis is employed to develop alternative threshold relations in which critical boundary shear stress τc is related to D and dc/D (R2 = 0.782) and to D and Sc (critical gradient) (R2 = 0.625). The computed R2 values derive in large part from the spurious correlations of dc/D and Sc with τc. Nevertheless, the relations may be utilized to predict τc. In this regard, the latter relation is likely to prove more useful than the former because Sc is generally known, whereas dc is not. An investigation of the functional relation between τc and D reveals that τc varies approximately with D2 for overland flow on the desert hillslopes under study, whereas the Shields relation predicts a linear relation (i.e. a D exponent of 1). This result is consistent with Cheng's data which show that F*c varies with (dc/D)?1 where 0.4 < dc/D < 2 and may be explained in terms of increased energy dissipation both in separation zones downslope of particles and in distortion of the water surface as dc/D decreases. Consequently, larger values of τc, and hence F*c, are required to initiate the transport of particles of a given size D as dc decreases.  相似文献

How to restore the residual organic carbon and residual hydrocarbon-generating potential is discussed based on the hydrocarbon degradability of source rock. The results indicate there is linear function relationship between the restoring coefficient of residual organic carbon (Kc) and the vitrinite reflectance (R o%) of various kinds of source rock, but the relationship is secondary functional between the restoring coefficient of residual hydrocarbon-generating potential (Ks) and the vitrinite reflectance (R o%). It is pointed out thatKc = (1 -Dresidual)/(1 -D primary),Ks= Kc (D primary/D residual). The restoration of residual organic carbon and hydrocarbon-generating potential of the Cambrian and Ordovician highly mature marine carbonate in the Tarim Basin and North China region shows that the lower limit value of hydrocarbon generating potential and the organic matter abundance of carbonate source rock are basically the same as that of clastic rock. The technical difficulty in hydrocarbon generating evaluation of highly mature and overmature carbonate is solved.  相似文献

The TiO2 contents of rutile-saturated melts ranging from basalt to rhyodacite have been investigated at P = 8–30 kbar and T = 1000–1300°C under hydrous, CO2-saturated, and volatile-absent conditions. Dissolved TiO2 is positively correlated with T and not strongly dependent on Ptotal. For fixed P and T, TiO2 content decreases markedly as the melts become more felsic. The distribution of TiO2 between rutile and liquid, expressed as a wt.% concentration ratio, D (rut/liq), is given by: In D = −3.16 + (9373T) + 0.026P − 0.152FM where T is in Kelvins, P in kbar and FM is a melt composition parameter, FM = [Na+K+ 2(Ca+Fe+Mg)]/Al· 1/Si in which the chemical symbols represent cation fractions. The first term expresses the competition of aluminate and titanate anions for charge-compensating cations, and the second term expresses the inverse dependence of dissolved TiO2 on SiO2 content. There is no apparent dependence of rutile solubility on water content.For ranges of probable solidus conditions, rutile saturation in basaltic, andesitic, and dacitic liquids requires 7–9, 5–7, and 1–3 wt.% TiO2, respectively. These concentrations are well in excess of those found in the respective rock types, so depletion in Nb, Ta, and Ti and reduced Nb/U and Nb/Th ratios in volcanic rocks erupted at convergent plate margins cannot be attributed to residual rutile in their source regions. Thus, Nb, Ta and Ti depletion must be an inherent property of the source region.We suggest that the island-arc source region has been depleted in Nb and Ta by a previous episode of melt extraction (MORB), zoning refining, or equilibration with a percolating melt or fluid. Such a process markedly depletes the LILE and HFSE element concentrations in the residuum, but ratios such as Nb/U, Nb/Th and U/Th remain relatively constant due to similar solid-melt partition coefficients. The depletion of Nb relative to Th in the source regions of island-arc magmas occurs during hybridization of the source by rutile-saturated (Nb/Ta-depleted) melts or aqueous fluids. If the hybridizing agent is a melt, a relatively felsic composition, produced under low T (900°) hydrous conditions, is required.  相似文献

Studies are performed on the toxicity for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours in the static test with dilutions of 10 … 32 vol.% of wastewaters from the pulp and paper production as well as of the mixed wastewater. The pulp waste shows the highest toxic effect, the LC50 of the three types of wastewater being between 15 and 27% in dependence on the test conditions. A general increase of the toxic effect is caused by a rise in temperature from 26 °C to 36 °C and an increase of the pH value from 7.5 to 8.2. The increase of the oxygen concentration from 5.2 to 7.2 mg/1 results in a reduction of the toxicity of the pulp and mixed wastes, the size of fishes having a significant effect only for the pulp waste. Concentrations of wastes of 6 … 9% may be regarded to be harmless for long periods of time.  相似文献

The Conductivity Test — Determining the Membrane-toxic Properties of Substances A new biotest system is introduced which is specific in terms of the measured effect but not in terms of the applied organisms. The system is able to detect the effect of membrane-toxic compounds e.g. detergents, organic solvents, and radical formers. Released into the environment, these substances damage biological membranes and therefore cause ion leakage into a surrounding medium. Ion leakage is taken as a measure for membrane damage and is determined as an increase of the electrical conductivity in the medium (conductivity test). The results presented for the tensides benzalkonium chloride, LAS (linear alkylbenzenesulfonate), and APG (alkylpolyglycoside) demonstrate the capability of the conductivity test to distinguish between the differing toxicological potential of these membrane-toxic substances. In contrast to most of the conventional biotests, the endpoint of the conductivity test is independent of a specific organism. This independence is demonstrated by the results obtained with benzalkonium chloride treatment of Elodea canadensis, Lemna minor, and Salvinia natans. The conductivity test represents a versatile, easy to handle biotest system for the assessment of ecotoxicological effects caused by membrane-toxic substances.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of soil detachment capacity is fundamental to establish process-based erosion models and improve soil loss assessment. Few studies were conducted to reveal the mechanism of detachment process for yellow soil on steep cropland in the subtropical region of China using field experiments. This study was performed to determine soil detachment characteristics and explore the relationships between soil detachment capacity (D c) and flow rate, slope gradient, mean velocity, shear stress, stream power and unit stream power. Field experiments were conducted on intact soil with flow rates ranging from 0.2 × 10−3 to 0.5 × 10−3 m−3 s−1 and slope gradients varying from 8.8 to 42.4%. The results showed the following. (a) D c of yellow soil was smaller than other soils because of its high clay content. (b) D c was more susceptible to flow than to slope gradient. Power functions were derived to depict the relationship between D c and the flow rate and slope gradient (R2 = 0.91). (c) D c was better simulated by power functions of the stream power (R2 = 0.83) than functions of the shear stress or the unit stream power. (d) Considering its accuracy, simplicity and accessibility, the power function based on flow rate and slope gradient is recommended to predict D c of yellow soil in the field. The results of this study provide useful support for revealing soil detachment mechanism and developing process-based soil erosion models for the subtropical region of China.  相似文献
