Fluid driven metasomatism and mass transfer from the earth’s mantle have played an important role in the evolution of the lower continental crust in many geodynamically active areas. The epicentral region of the disastrous 1993 Killari earthquake (M 6.2), concealed below a thick suite of Deccan volcanics in central India, appear to be one such region. In connection with the study of seismotectonics of the earthquake prone Deccan volcanic region, we have carried out systematic and detailed geochemical and mineralogical investigation on core samples from the basement, obtained from the 617m deep KLR-1 borehole, drilled in the epicentral region of Killari. Our investigations indicate that the basement, concealed below 338m thick Deccan volcanics, is made up of CO2, Cl, FeO and CaO-rich, high density (2.82 g/cm3) — high velocity (avg. Vp: 6.2 km/s) moderately retrogressed upper amphibolite to granulite facies mid crustal rocks, which were subjected to pervasive Ca-metasomatism due to infiltration of mantle fluids. Graniticgneissic layer, typical of the upper crust, seems to be totally absent from this earthquake region. Chondrite normalized trace and rare earth elemental patterns display negative Eu anomalies together with LILE enrichment. Similarly, spider diagrams for incompatible elements show depletion in Zr, Hf, Y, Ta and Nb relative to the primitive mantle, indicating possible alterations of such relatively immobile elements at relatively high temperatures. Selective enrichment is also observed in transitional elements like Cu and Zn, indicating the possible role of chlorine in metal transport. The present study suggests that regional metasomatism beneath the Deccan Traps, which apparently alters the basic fabric of the rock during recrystallisation and makes it weak, may have a link with the nucleation of large earthquakes.  相似文献

A rare occurrence of a microspherule has been found in the infratrappean sediments, encountered below 338 m thick Deccan volcanic cover in KLR-1 scientific borehole, drilled in the epicentral zone of the 1993 Killari earthquake (Maharashtra, India). Palynological studies of the sediments indicate their age as Early Permian (Asselian, 298–295 Ma) for deposition. Transmission electron microscope studies reveal that the spherule from the infratrappeans, is having a similar composition to that of the Neoarchean amphibolite to granulite facies mid crustal basement. The spherule is non-spherical in nature, containing mostly FeO (10.70 ± 0.20 wt.%), CaO (13.8 ± 0.5 wt.%), Al2O3 (7.78 ± 0.30 wt.%), MgO (6.47 ± 0.3 wt.%), SiO2 (47.46 ± 0.50 wt.%), TiO2 (2.47 ± 0.3 wt.%), K2O (1.89 ± 0.20 wt.%), and Cl (0.33 ± 0.05 wt.%). Since the Fe composition of the spherule is almost same as the basement rock (10.5 wt.%), and the chlorine content is also in the same range as the basement (0.04–0.24 wt.%), it would suggest possibility of an extraterrestrial impact over the Indian terrain during the erstwhile Gondwana sedimentation period that may be associated with the Permian–Triassic mass extinction, the most severe one in the Earth's history.  相似文献

Crustal or mantle xenoliths are not common in evolved, tholeiitic flood basalts that cover huge areas of the Precambrian shields. Yet, the occasional occurrences provide the most direct and unequivocal evidence on basement composition. Few xenolith occurrences are known from the Deccan Traps, India, and inferences about the Deccan basement have necessarily depended on geophysical studies and geochemistry of Deccan lavas and intrusions. Here, we report two basalt dykes (Rajmane and Talwade dykes) from the central Deccan Traps that are extremely rich in crustal xenoliths of great lithological variety (gneisses, quartzites, granite mylonite, felsic granulite, carbonate rock, tuff). Because the dykes are parallel and only 4 km apart, and only a few kilometres long, the xenoliths provide clear evidence for high small-scale lithological heterogeneity and strong tectonic deformation in the Precambrian Indian crust beneath. Measured 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the xenoliths range from 0.70935 (carbonate) to 0.78479 (granite mylonite). The Rajmane dyke sampled away from any of the xenoliths shows a present-day 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.70465 and initial (at 66 Ma) ratio of 0.70445. The dyke is subalkalic and fairly evolved (Mg No. = 44.1) and broadly similar in its Sr-isotopic and elemental composition to some of the lavas of the Mahabaleshwar Formation. The xenoliths are comparable lithologically and geochemically to basement rocks from the Archaean Dharwar craton forming much of southern India. As several lines of evidence suggest, the Dharwar craton may extend at least 350–400 km north under the Deccan lava cover. This is significant for Precambrian crustal evolution of India besides continental reconstructions.  相似文献

The chemistry, REE patterns, and carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of carbonates from ore veins of the Darasun deposit are discussed. In addition to the earlier described siderite, calcite, and carbonates of the dolomite-ankerite series, kutnahorite is identified. The total REE content in Fe-Mg carbonates of the dolomite-ankerite series (2.8–73 ppm) is much lower than in later calcite (18–390 ppm). δ13C of Fe-Mg carbonates and calcite varies from +1.1 to −6.7‰ and from −0.9 to −4.9‰, respectively. δ18O of Fe-Mg carbonates and calcite varies from +17.6 to 3.6‰ and from +15.7 to −0.5‰, respectively. The REE sum and carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions reveal zonal distribution relative to the central granodiorite porphyry stock. The correlation between the carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions and REE sum reflects variations in the physicochemical formation conditions and composition of ore-forming fluid. The isotopic composition of fluid is calculated, and possible sources of its components are considered. Earlier established evidence for a magmatic source of ore-forming fluid and participation of meteoric water in ore formation is confirmed. Geochemical evidence for interaction of ore-forming fluid with host rocks is furnished. The relationships between the REE sum, on the one hand, and carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of hydrothermal ore-forming fluid, on the other, are established.  相似文献

Carbonate macrofaunal remains and diagenetic tubes collected from a number of structures in the Central Barents Sea area during the 18th TTR (Training Through Research) cruise were subdivided into three groups according to the results of stable carbon and oxygen isotopes analysis. The first group includes carbonates that were formed from bicarbonate only from surrounding sea waters. The carbonates of the second group were formed during diagenesis with use of mixed sources of bicarbonate. The fourth group includes methane-derived carbonates that were formed as a result of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM).

Electron microprobe analyses of minerals of thirteen DeccanTrap lava flows at Mahabaleshwar have been carried out in thepresent study. All of these flows have tholeiitic bulk compositionsand all, except one (represented by MB-81-17 of Mahoney et al.,1982) contain olivine, plagioclase, two pyroxenes, and Fe-Tioxide minerals. Olivine and plagioclase appear as distinct phenocrystsin all but one flow, and Ca-rich pyroxene joins as a phenocrystphase in the younger flows. Pigeonite and Fe-Ti oxide minerals(titanomagnetite and ilmenite) occur in the groundmass. Olivineoccurs as both groundmass and phenocryst phase in MB-81-17 (whichis the only flow without low-Ca pyroxene phase); in all otherflows olivine appears only as phenocryst phase. In all but one(MB-81-17) flow olivine is completely altered. MB-81-17 olivinegrains are only partly altered, and in this rock the cores ofphenocrysts are rounded and have a composition of Fo77 whereastheir euhedral rims have a composition around Fo67. The groundmassolivine grains in MB-81-17 are Fo41–32. Substantial Fe-enrichmentand zoning trends are shown by the pyroxenes in individual rocks. The cores of Ca-rich pyroxene phenocrysts of some of the flowshave as much as 4 wt. per cent A12O3 and may have crystallizedat higher (crustal) pressures. Pigeonite thermometry (Ishii,1975) suggests an average of 1050?C for crystallization of thegroundmass pigeonite (eruption temperature?). Fe-Ti oxide mineralsare mostly altered in the older flows. In the younger flows, coexisting unaltered titanomagnetite and ilmenite yield maximumtemperature estimates for the crystallization of these phaseof about 1025?C and an oxygen fugacity of 10–11.5 atm.The T-fo2 path followed by these flows seems to have been consistentlysomewhat lower than that defined by the 1 atm. fayalite-magnetitequartz curve. All of the lavas examined have experienced extensivefractional crystallization of olivine and some clinopyroxeneat relatively higher pressures. These lavas were saturated orclose to being saturated with olivine+plagioclase+clinopyroxeneduring eruption. Plagioclase accumulation, although it appearsto have occurred, has not been significant. It is suggestedthat MB-81-17 magma was contaminated by a calcite-rich rock(limestone?) whereas the lower Group 1 magmas may have beenselectively contaminated by quartz-bearing contaminant. Alternately, parental magma of MB-81-1 (with the highest Mg-number and 8= -16) may have been produced in the upper mantle into whichminor masses of old crust was well mixed. Magma mixing, crystalfractionation, and contamination processes of Mahabaleshwarbasalts and possible genetic relationships with other DeccanTrap lavas are discussed.  相似文献

Middle to Late Ordovician subtidal carbonates in the Manitoulin Island area of Ontario are predominantly limestone in composition, but non-ferroan and ferroan dolomite is a common cement as well as a selective or locally pervasive replacement phase. Integration of field, petrographic, geochemical (δ13C, δ18O) and fluid inclusion data indicates that lithification of these carbonates occurred during burial diagenesis, with much of the alteration controlled by regional fracturing and hydrothermal influences. Aqueous (type 1) fluid inclusions in early calcite (pre-dolomite) and dolomite are saline (> 29 wt% NaCl eq.) solutions with Ca and/or Mg in excess of Na and display homogenization temperatures with modes of 95 and 101°C, respectively. These temperatures can be explained by significantly more burial than can be accounted for either by the available stratigraphic information or by an unusually high palaeogeothermal gradient, which also is not well supported. The fluid inclusion temperatures are interpreted to have resulted from hydrothermal fluids which circulated during the burial diagenesis of these strata. Type 1 inclusions in late (post-dolomite) calcite are less saline (<19 wt% NaCl eq.) and have a bimodal distribution of homogenization temperatures with a relatively well defined low temperature peak similar to those in early calcite and dolomite and a broad higher temperature grouping with a mode at 183°C. A small proportion of methane and light hydrocarbon-bearing fluid inclusions (type 2) are present in all stages of carbonate. Dolomitizing fluids were derived from burial compaction of argillaceous sediments in the more central parts of the Michigan Basin and the updip migration of these brines along fractures to the basin margin where the carbonates of the Manitoulin Island area were dolomitized. Alternatively, migration of dolomitizing brines downward from the overlying pervasively dolomitized Silurian sequence into fractures in the Ordovician carbonates may have occurred. Integration of the aqueous fluid inclusion data into the diagenetic history of these carbonates remains equivocal because most of the inclusions are secondary or indeterminate in origin. Nevertheless, high salinities resulting from interaction with evaporitic strata and hydrothermal effects are clearly implicated although the origin of the latter remains unclear. The alteration styles of the Ordovician carbonates in the Manitoulin area are similar to those of Ordovician hydrocarbon reservoirs described from other parts of the Michigan Basin. They indicate that fracture-related diagenesis occurred on a basin-wide scale and that hydrothermal effects were important.  相似文献

Landslide is one of the devastating natural phenomenon that threatens human life and property. Every year a number of persons lost their lives due to the landslides. Therefore, a better understanding and characterization of landslide is very essential for adopting mitigation strategies to contain the adversities of this natural hazard. Information on landslides from different climatic setup are very essential for better understanding of the influence of weathering, rainfall, or topography on landslide generation. Weathering is one of the important causative factor for landslide generation in the moderate topography or inactive mountainous terrain. The Western Ghats including the Deccan Traps, an inactive mountain range, receives torrential rainfall. Intense rainfall in these areas enhances the weathering processes and fabricates thick soil covers. Mahabaleshwar area, Maharashtra was chosen as a case study, where high elevated part is covered by lateritic layer and each lava flow unit is separated by a thin weathered bed of red bole. The area experiences series of landslides during the summer monsoon months. Mainly two types of landslides have been identified in the area confined with the red bole bed and powdery lateritic soil. The first type of landslides occur at higher elevations (≥1200m) where horizontal beds of permeable laterites underlined by impermeable thick basalt beds. The rain water infiltrates down and spread laterally within the permeable lateritic beds. It finally spouts at lower plateau elevations and triggers mainly debris flows. The other category of landslides occurs where the weathered red bole bed separates two successive lava flows. The percolating water from the secondary porosities (joints and inter connected vugs) comes out from the contact zones of basalt and red bole bed in the form of seepages. It erodes the red bole bed and as a result the overlying masses hang and consequently lead to rock fall. The Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) of the representative samples from landslide locations indicates significant weathering. The CIA values for the fine lateritic soil are up to 98% whereas for the red bole bed it varies from 77 to 85%. This suggests a high chemical weathering and higher erodibility. The association of active landslide locations with the red bole bed and fine lateritic soil suggests a close relation between weathering and landslide occurrences in the area.  相似文献

Ground magnetic data collected over Chikotra River in the peripheral region of Deccan Volcanic Province (DVP) of Maharashtra located in Kolhapur district was analysed to throw light on the structural pattern and distribution of magnetic sources within the basin. In order to isolate the magnetic anomalies showing varying trend and amplitude, several transformation operations including wavelength filtering, and upward continuation has been carried out on the reduced to pole anomaly map. Qualitative interpretation of these products help identify the distribution of magnetic sources, viz., the Deccan basalts, dolerite intrusives and older greenstone and schist belts in the subsurface. Present study suggests that the Chikotra basin is composed of three structural units; a NE–SW unit superposed on deeper NW–SE unit with randomly distributed trap flows on the surface. One of the major outcome of the present study is the delineation of almost 900-m thick Proterozoic Kaladgi sediments below the Deccan trap flows. The NE–SW magnetic sources may probably represent intrusives into the Kaladgi sediments, while the deeper NW–SE trends are interpreted as the northward extension of the Dharwars, underneath the Deccan lava flows, that forms the basement for the deposition of Kaladgi sediments.  相似文献

Analyses of groundwater samples collected from several locations in a small watershed of the Deccan Trap Hydrologic Province, indicated anomalously higher values of nitrate than the background. However, the NO3 concentrations in water from dug wells under pastureland where the subsurface material consisted of stony waste were minimum. The maximum values were reported for water from dug wells where the principal land use was agricultural. Lowering of NO3 values under shallow water-table conditions suggests denitrification. Higher concentrations of nitrate determined for samples collected from the wells with a deeper water-table indicate that denitrification process is inactive. The high values of nitrate coinciding with agricultural land use indicate fertilizers as the main source of nitrate pollution of ground-water. Decrease in Cl/NO3 ratio for agricultural land use confirms this inference.  相似文献

Trachytes and rhyolites from Salsette Island, north of Bombay, have distinctive trace element and isotope features which mark them out from typical crustal melts. Their highly incompatible trace element and Sr-, Nd and Pb isotope ratios are similar to those of the associated Deccan flood basalts. Thus the rhyolites and trachytes are closely related to the basalts, and a striking compositional gap between 50 and 65% SiO2 suggests that the high SiO2 rocks evolved by 10–15% partial melting followed by variable amounts of fractional crystallisation. The source material could have been basalt within the Deccan Trap, or related gabbroic rocks in deep crustal sill complexes. The rhyolites yield an Rb-Sr whole rock age of 61.5±1.9 Ma, with a slightly high initial 87Sr/86Sr=0.7085±18. It is argued that crustal extension provides a suitable regime for the generation of acid magmas by partial melting of associated basic rocks.  相似文献

Vertical deep boreholes of depth up to 1522.50m have been drilled in Koyna-Warna area of Maharashtra State within the Deccan Volcanic Province to study the most outstanding example of Reservoir Triggered Seismicity (RTS). The drilling of 9 bore-holes in the area has provided a window to earth scientists to peep into geological details available below Deccan Trap. The 932.50m thick pile of Deccan basalt, consisting of 30 flows at Rasati, near Koyna, which has been physically seen through cores, present a marvellous geological repository for observations. The megascopic characteristics of various flows and variation in composition have been presented in this paper. The microscopic and geochemical characteristics have been kept out of this communication, as the relevant studies are not completed to draw any conclusion. This study records the presence of granite wash (≈1m thick) over basement and below basalt representing Late Archaean to Cretaceous period hiatus. The basement rocks, presumably of Late Archaean age have been described mega-scopically. A fair picture of sub-surface pre-Deccan topography is shown with the help of borehole data, which confirm the nearly flat topography of pre-Deccan surface especially in this part of the area occupied by 30 flows of Deccan basalt. Correlation of 30 flows with the established stratigraphy has also been attempted for subsurface existence of Ambenali (Upper) and Poladpur Formations of Wai Subgroup in Koyna-Warna area.  相似文献

Available literature reveals that little work has been done on the origin of springs in a basaltic terrain. Close examination of such springs in about 2,000 km2 of the upper Koyna River basin in the Deccan Trap country of the Western Ghats (hills), India, reveals that their origins are dependent on the lithologic character of different basaltic flow units and the existing physiography. Although rainfall, its seasonality and areas of recharge, play vital roles in the recharge of these springs, their yields are also controlled by lithological variations and hydraulic characteristics of their source-aquifers. Chemical concentrations of these springs are heavily dependent on the lithological compositions of the source-aquifers and the residence time of groundwater in these aquifers. Currently, basaltic springs are classified with those issuing from other terrains. However, because the emergence of groundwater in the form of springs is largely controlled by the lithology and the resulting water-bearing properties of the formations, a new classification scheme is proposed that classifies the springs on the basis of their source-aquifers. While tapping springs for drinking/irrigation purposes, it must be remembered that they also sustain thousands of other life forms vital to a balanced ecosystem. Changes in the uses of these springs may also affect other human communities downstream. Therefore, before developing spring flow, a trade-off must be made considering local needs and downstream users. Emphasizing only local human needs may lead to severe intercommunity conflict and negative environmental consequences. Electronic Publication  相似文献

The distributions of stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in modern and ancient limestones of various types were studied. Carbonate samples from modern sediments were collected in the Black and Barents Seas. Ancient carbonates were represented by Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian-Tithonian) limestones from the central part of the West Siberian basin. Carbonate samples include remains of modern and Upper Jurassic fauna, carbonate crust from sediments of the Black Sea, carbonate tube from sediments of the Barents Sea, and Upper Jurassic limestone from the carbonate layer found at top of Abalak, bottom of Bazhenov deposits in the central part of the West Siberian basin. According to the results of the isotope analysis and comparison with modern carbonates, Upper Jurassic limestones of the West Siberian basin belong to the group of methane-derived carbonates and precipitated as a result of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Fractures in limestones are filled with secondary calcite.  相似文献

The analysis of stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen in different carbonate rocks by the phosphoric acid method is not easier than that by the laser sampling method developed in recent years, which optically focuses laser beams with sufficient energy on a micro area of a thin section in a vacuum sample box via microscope. CO 2 produced by heating decomposition of carbonate was purified by the vacuum system, and the stable isotopic values of carbon and oxygen were calculated and analyzed on a mass spectrometer. This paper adopted the laser micro-sampling technique to analyze the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen in dolomite, carbonate cement, stromatolite and different forms of dawsonite (donbassite). Results indicated that the laser micro-sampling method is effective in analyzing carbonate composition and could be a convincing proof for justification on carbonate composition analysis.  相似文献

The crustal depth section obtained from deep seismic soundings along the Koyna II (Kelsi-Loni) profile, which lies near latitude 18°N roughly in the east-west direction in that part of the Deccan Trap Maharashtra State, India, shows a number of reflection segments below the Deccan Traps down to the Moho discontinuity. A deep fault below the Deccan Traps 13 km east of Mahad divides the entire cross-section including the Moho boundary into two crustal blocks. The reflection segments show updip towards the west coast in the western block. The Moho discontinuity which is at a depth of 39 km near the deep fault starts rising towards the coast, reaching a depth of 31.5 km at the west coast. The eastern block is thrown up by 1.5 km with respect to the western block along the deep fault. A structural contour map of the Moho discontinuity for the Koyna reservoir area has been prepared from the present results and the crustal information obtained along the Koyna I profile (Kaila et al., 1979a), shows that the deep fault in the Koyna area is aligned in the NNW-SSE direction.Refraction seismic data analysis by the wave front method reveals that the thickness of the Deccan Trap increases towards the west coast. The Deccan Trap is 600–700 m thick in the eastern region between Nira (SP 130) and Loni (SP 200) and attains a thickness of 1500 m at 10 km east of the west coast. The longitudinal wave velocity in the Deccan Traps along the profile varies from 4.8 to 5.0 km/sec and in the crystalline basement from 6.0 to 6.15 km/sec. A tentative isopach contour map of the Deccan Traps and a tentative structural contour map of the Pre-Deccan Trap contact have been prepared for the Koyna reservoir area from the results along the Koyna II and Koyna I profiles. A flexure aligned in a NNW-SSE direction, in the Pre-Deccan Trap contact, which is an expression of the deep fault into the basement, has been clearly brought out. The flexure coincides in general with the orientation of the Deccan volcanic scarp in this area.  相似文献
