We investigate numerically kinematic dynamos driven by flow of electrically conducting fluid in the shell between two concentric differentially rotating spheres, a configuration normally referred to as spherical Couette flow. We compare between axisymmetric (2D) and fully 3D flows, between low and high global rotation rates, between prograde and retrograde differential rotations, between weak and strong nonlinear inertial forces, between insulating and conducting boundaries and between two aspect ratios. The main results are as follows. Azimuthally drifting Rossby waves arising from the destabilisation of the Stewartson shear layer are crucial to dynamo action. Differential rotation and helical Rossby waves combine to contribute to the spherical Couette dynamo. At a slow global rotation rate, the direction of differential rotation plays an important role in the dynamo because of different patterns of Rossby waves in prograde and retrograde flows. At a rapid global rotation rate, stronger flow supercriticality (namely the difference between the differential rotation rate of the flow and its critical value for the onset of nonaxisymmetric instability) facilitates the onset of dynamo action. A conducting magnetic boundary condition and a larger aspect ratio both favour dynamo action.  相似文献

Abstract

The flow in a mechanically driven thin barotropic rotating fluid system is analysed. The linear theory of Baker and Robinson (1969) is modified and extended into the non-linear regime.

An internal parameter, the “local Rossby number”, is indicative of the onset of nonlinear effects. If this parameter is 0(1) then inertial effects are as important as Coriolis accelerations in the interior of the transport-turning western boundary layer and both of its Ekman layers. The inertial effects in the Ekman layers, ignored in previous explorations of non-linear wind driven oceanic circulation, are retained here and calculated using an approximation of the Oseen type. The circulation problem is reduced to a system of scalar equations in only two independent variables; the system is valid for non-small local Rossby number provided only that the approximate total vorticity is positive.

To complete the solution for small Rossby number a boundary condition for the inertially induced transport is needed. It is found by examining the dynamics controlling this additional transport from the western boundary layer as the transport recirculates through the rest of the ocean basin. The strong constraint of total recirculation within the western boundary layer (zero net inertial transport) is derived.

The calculated primary inertial effects are in agreement with the observations of the laboratory model of Baker and Robinson (1969).

The analysis indicates the extent to which three-dimensional non-linear circulation can be reduced to a two dimensional problem.  相似文献

We investigate, through both asymptotic analysis and direct numerical simulation, precessionally driven flow of a homogeneous fluid confined in a fluid-filled circular cylinder that rotates rapidly about its symmetry axis and precesses about a different axis that is fixed in space. A particular emphasis is placed on a spherical-like cylinder whose diameter is nearly the same as its length. At this special aspect ratio, the strongest direct resonance occurs between the spatially simplest inertial mode and the precessional Poincaré forcing. An asymptotic analytical solution in closed form describing weakly precessing flow is derived in the mantle frame of reference for asymptotically small Ekman numbers. We also construct a nonlinear three-dimensional finite element model – which is validated against both the asymptotic solution and a constructed exact solution – for elucidating the nonlinear transition leading to disordered flow in the precessing spherical-like cylinder. Properties of both weakly and strongly precessing flows are investigated with the aid of a complete inertial-mode decomposition of the fully nonlinear solution. Despite a large effort being made, the well-known triadic resonance is not found in the precessing spherical-like cylinder. The energy contained in the precessionally forced inertial mode is primarily transferred, through nonlinear effects in the viscous boundary layers, to the geostrophic flow that becomes predominant when the precessional Poincaré force is sufficiently large. It is found that the nonlinear flow evolutes gradually and progressively from the laminar to disordered as the precessional force increases.  相似文献

A three-dimensional baroclinic model of the Balearic Sea region is used to examine the processes influencing the distribution of near-inertial currents and waves in the region. Motion is induced by a spatially uniform wind impulse. By using a uniform wind, Ekman pumping due to spatial variability in the wind is removed with the associated generation of internal waves. However, internal waves can still be produced where stratification intersects topography. The generation and propagation of these waves, together with the spatial distribution of wind-forced inertial oscillations, are examined in detail. Diagnostic calculations show that in the near-coastal region inertial oscillations are inhibited by the coastal boundary. Away from this boundary the magnitude of the inertial oscillations increases, with currents showing a 180° phase shift in the vertical. The inclusion of an along-shelf flow modifies the inertial currents due to non-linear interaction between vorticity in the flow and the inertial oscillations. Prognostic calculations show that besides inertial oscillations internal waves are generated. In a linear model the addition of an along-shelf flow produces a slight reduction in the energy at the near-inertial frequency due to enhanced viscosity associated with the flow and changes in density field. The inclusion of non-linear effects modifies the currents due to inertial oscillations in a manner similar to that found in the diagnostic model. A change in the effective inertial frequency also influences the propagation of the internal waves. However, this does not appear to be the main reason for the enhanced damping of inertial energy, which is due to the along-shelf advection of water of a different density into a region and increased viscosity and mixing associated with the along-shelf flow.Responsible Editor: Phil Dyke  相似文献

The generation and further linear and nonlinear dynamics of planetary ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves are investigated in the rotating dissipative ionosphere in the presence of inhomogeneous zonal wind (shear flow). Planetary ULF magnetized Rossby type waves appear as a result of interaction of the medium with the spatially inhomogeneous geomagnetic field. An effective linear mechanism responsible for the intensification and mutual transformation of large scale magnetized Rossby type and small scale inertial waves is found. For shear flows, the operators of the linear problem are not self-conjugate, and therefore the eigenfunctions of the problem may not be orthogonal and can hardly be studied by the canonical modal approach. Hence, it becomes necessary to use the so-called nonmodal mathematical analysis. The nonmodal analysis shows that the transformation of wave disturbances in shear flows is due to the non-orthogonality of eigenfunctions of the problem in the conditions of linear dynamics. Using numerical modeling, the peculiar features of the interaction of waves with the background flow as well as the mutual transformation of wave disturbances are illustrated in the ionosphere. It has been shown that the shear flow driven wave perturbations effectively extract an energy of the shear flow increasing the own energy and amplitude. These perturbations undergo self-organization in the form of the nonlinear solitary vortex structures due to nonlinear twisting of the perturbation’s front. Depending on the features of the velocity profiles of the shear flows the nonlinear vortex structures can be either monopole vortices or vortex streets and vortex chains.  相似文献

The role of inertial waves in the dynamies of the Earth's fluid core has been investigated through laboratory experiments on a spheroidal shell of rotating fluid. In these experiments inertial waves of azimuthal wavenumber 1, Ekman number 0(10?5), Rossby number 0(10?1) were excited by precession of an inner spheroidal body. Proximity to resonance was achieved by adjusting the ratio of the frequency of precession of the inner body to the rotational speed of the container to be near the eigenfrequency of the inertial wave mode being studied. Once the system was near resonance the perturbation was stopped and ringdown records were obtained. Amplitude, eigenfrequency and decay rate were recovered simultaneously for the principal and neighbouring modes excited using an iterative linearized least squares procedure. The recovery of complex eigenfrequencies for non-axisymmetric inertial waves in this shell geometry has given experimental verification of their existence. For those waves of azimuthal wavenumber one, a significant nonlinear interaction among modes is inferred from the simultaneous recovery of neighbouring modes. Other non linear effects include a mean azimuthal flow which appears to be stable for the low spatial order modes studied. These results contrast with highly unstable mean flow found experimentally in similar experiments carried out in cylindrical geometry.  相似文献

Abstract

It is shown that the linear equatorial dynamics of a shallow ocean is characterized by two boundary layers of width γ? L and γL (γ is the Ekman number of the flow, assumed small, and L is a horizontal dimension of the basin). In the γ? layer stress in the bottom Ekman layer is comparable to that in the surface Ekman layer. In the γ layer vertical friction is important throughout the depth of the ocean. Should the Rossby number ? be so large as to invalidate a linear theory (? > γ5/3), then inertial effects become important at a distance ?2/5 L from the equator. The role played in the circulation of the basin by the non-linear equatorial current first studied by Charney (1960) is shown to be similar to that of the γ layer of the linear theory. Though lateral friction is unimportant in a linear model of the flow, shear layers at the equator are found to be a necessary feature of non-linear flow.  相似文献

Two-layer equatorial primitive equations for the free troposphere in the presence of a thin atmospheric boundary layer and thermal dissipation are developed here. An asymptotic theory for the resonant nonlinear interaction of long equatorial baroclinic and barotropic Rossby waves is derived in the presence of such dissipation. In this model, a self-consistent asymptotic derivation establishes that boundary layer flows are generated by meridional pressure gradients in the lower troposphere and give rise to degenerate equatorial Ekman friction. That is to say, the asymptotic model has the property that the dissipation matrix has one eigenvalue which is nearly zero: therefore the dynamics rapidly dissipates flows with pressure at the base of the troposphere and creates barotropic/baroclinic spin up/spin down. The simplified asymptotic equations for the amplitudes of the dissipative equatorial barotropic and baroclinic waves are studied by linear theory and integrated numerically. The results indicate that although the dissipation slightly weakens the tropics to midlatitude connection, strong localized wave packets are nonetheless able to exchange energy between barotropic and baroclinic waves on intraseasonal timescales in the presence of baroclinic mean shear. Interesting dissipation balanced wave-mean flow states are discovered through numerical simulations. In general, the boundary layer dissipation is very efficient for flows in which the barotropic and baroclinic components are of the same sign at the base of the free troposphere whereas the boundary layer dissipation is less efficient for flows whose barotropic and baroclinic components are of opposite sign at the base of the free troposphere.  相似文献

The generation and further dynamics of the planetary magnetized Rossby waves and inertial waves in a dissipative ionosphere in the presence of a smooth inhomogeneous zonal wind (shear flow) have been studied. The magnetized Rossby waves are caused by the interaction with the spatially inhomogeneous geomagnetic field and represent the ionospheric manifestations of usual tropospheric Rossby waves. The effective linear mechanism of amplification and mutual transformation of the Rossby and inertial waves has been revealed. For shear flows, the operators of linear problems are not self-adjoint, and the corresponding eigenfunctions are non-orthogonal; therefore, a canonical modal approach is of little use in studying such motions. It becomes necessary to apply the so-called nonmodal mathematical analysis, which has actively been developed for the last years. The nonmodal approach makes it possible to reveal that the transformation of wave-like disturbances in shear flows is caused by the nonorthogonality of eigenfunctions in the problem of linear dynamics. Thus, there appear a new degree of the system freedom and a new way of disturbance evolution in the medium.  相似文献

The differentially heated rotating annulus is a laboratory experiment historically designed for modelling large-scale features of the mid-latitude atmosphere. In the present study, we investigate a modified version of the classic baroclinic experiment in which a juxtaposition of convective and motionless stratified layers is created by introducing a vertical salt stratification. The thermal convective motions are suppressed in a central region at mid-depth of the rotating tank, therefore double-diffusive convection rolls can develop only in thin layers located at top and bottom, where the salt stratification is weakest. For high enough rotation rates, the baroclinic instability destabilises the flow in the top and the bottom shallow convective layers, generating cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies separated by the stable stratified layer. Thanks to this alternation of layers resembling the convective and radiative layers of stars, the planetary’s atmospheric troposphere and stratosphere or turbulent layers at the sea surface above stratified waters, this new laboratory setup is of interest for both astrophysics and geophysical sciences. More specifically, it allows to study the exchange of momentum and energy between the layers, primarily by the propagation of internal gravity waves (IGW). PIV velocity maps are used to describe the wavy flow pattern at different heights. Using a co-rotating laser and camera, the wave field is well resolved and different wave types can be found: baroclinic waves, Kelvin and Poincaré type waves. The signature of small-scale IGW can also be observed attached to the baroclinic jet. The baroclinic waves occur at the thin convectively active layer at the surface and the bottom of the tank, though decoupled they show different manifestation of nonlinear interactions. The inertial Kelvin and Poincaré waves seem to be mechanically forced. The small-scale wave trains attached to the meandering jet point to an imbalance of the large-scale flow. For the first time, the simultaneous occurrence of different wave types is reported in detail for a differentially heated rotating annulus experiment.  相似文献

Abstract

Numerical solutions of the axisymmetric flows during the relatively early phase of spin-up from rest of a stratified fluid in a cylinder are presented. Detailed results are given for a cylinder of aspect ratio of O(l) and for a minute Ekman number, showing axisymmetric spin-up for three values of the stratification parameter. As the stratification increases, the meridional circulation is confined to a region closer to the Ekman layers. An axisymmetric shear wave propagates radially inward from the sidewall, but, unlike the strictly vertical front for a homogeneous fluid, the interface which separates rotating from nonrotating fluid is bow-shaped. For a stratified fluid, the axial vorticity distribution is nonuniform both in the vertical and in the radial directions. With increasing stratification, diffusive vorticity production near the sidewall is more pronounced. Axisymmetric flows in the early phase of spin-up of a stratified fluid are controlled by both the inviscid dynamic effect and the viscous diffusion effect. At a location close to the Ekman layers, the inviscid effect outweighs the viscous effect, in much the same way as in a homogeneous fluid. However, at a location close to mid-depth, the viscous diffusion effect, enhanced by substantial flow gradients in that region, is dominant. This points to the necessity of including the direct effect of viscous diffusion in the interior in formulating an analytical model of stratified spin-up problems.  相似文献

Summary Physical phenomena fundamental to rotating, baroclinically driven flows are studied with reference to results of numerical simulation of rotating annulus flows, using a modified Galerkin Model. Both local and global effects of sources, sinks, and transports of heat and momentum are discussed. A convenient energy exchange diagram reveals detailed information that is used to analyze nonlinear equilibration and amplitude vacillation of quasi-geostrophic baroclinic eddies. Transient inertial oscillations, sidewall boundary layers, and internal boundary layers are also discussed.A detailed study of symmetric flows is made, eleven of which are tested numerically for stability with respect to three-dimensional disturbances of a given zonal wave number. Two of the four unstable cases are integrated to a numerical steady state with finite-amplitude, quasi-geostrophic baroclinic waves. With the rigid-lid geometry assumed, the average zonal velocity is zero, resulting in zero phase velocity of the waves. The structure of the thermal wave is nearly coherent in the vertical. These numerical results are consistent with laboratory observations. The eddy flow is quasi-geostrophic except in horizontal boundary layers, where the flow is driven toward low pressure. A small cross-isotherm advection is sufficient to maintain the temperature wave against diffusion and vertical advection. The eddy flow adjusts spontaneously toward the form of the fastest growing or slowest decaying disturbance representable by the truncated space resolution. The eddy flow feeds energy into the mean zonal flow in barotropic-type interactions reflected mainly by the familiar tilted trough. During equilibration, the eddy flow alters the mean zonal flow in such a way that eddy energy sources are reduced relative to energy sinks. However, this adjustment is small compared to the change of total flow, which reflects a relatively large change of eddy amplitude. This suggests that small errors in the mean zonal flow representation can lead to relatively large errors in total flow representation. In most flows studied the kinetic energy dissipation is concentrated in thin boundary layers. In spite of this thinness, the basically laminar character of these dissipative boundary layers allows accurate and economical numerical simulation through the use of characteristic functions, which is a natural refinernent of the basic Galerkin method used. (In this prototype study, only moderately characteristic functions are used, thus sacrificing numerical economy while simplifying the programming.) Similarly, the generation of potential energy, which is transformed into the kinetic energy of the flow, is accurately simulated. In most cases studied, this generation is also concentrated in thin boundary layers where thermal energy is extracted from cold fluid and added to warm fluid.Contribution number 76 of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, Florida State University, USA.

Abstract

A quasi-geostrophic numerical model of flow in a rotating channel is integrated under conditions typical of laboratory experiments with an internally heated annulus system. Compared to a laboratory experiment, or a full Navier-Stokes simulation, the quasi geostrophic numerical model is a simple system. It includes nonlinear interactions, dissipation via conventional parameterizations of Ekman layers and internal diffusion, and a steady forcing term which represents heating near the centre of the channel and cooling near both sides. Explicit boundary layers, cylindrical geometry effects, horizontal variations in static stability and variations in conductivity and diffusivity with temperature are all absent, and ageostrophic advection is incompletely represented. Nevertheless, over a range of parameters, flows are produced which strongly resemble those seen in the laboratory thus suggesting that the most important physical processes are represented. The numerical model is used to map out a regime diagram which includes examples of steady flows, flows with periodic time dependence (wavenumber vacillations) and flows which are irregularly time dependent.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

It is shown that flows in precessing cubes develop at certain parameters large axisymmetric components in the velocity field which are large enough to either generate magnetic fields by themselves, or to contribute to the dynamo effect if inertial modes are already excited and acting as a dynamo. This effect disappears at small Ekman numbers. The critical magnetic Reynolds number also increases at low Ekman numbers because of turbulence and small-scale structures.  相似文献

In the present paper zonal mean flow excitation by inertial waves is studied in analogy to mean flow excitation by gravity waves that plays an important role for the quasi-biennial oscillation in the equatorial atmosphere. In geophysical flows that are stratified and rotating, pure gravity and inertial waves correspond to the two limiting cases: gravity waves neglect rotation, inertial waves neglect stratification. The former are more relevant for fluids like the atmosphere, where stratification is dominant, the latter for the deep oceans or planet cores, where rotation dominates. In the present study a hierarchy of simple analytical and numerical models of zonally symmetric inertial wave-mean flow interactions is considered and the results are compared with data from a laboratory experiment. The main findings can be summarised as follows: (i) when the waves are decoupled from the mean flow they just drive a retrograde (eastward) zonal mean flow, independent of the sign of the meridional phase speed; (ii) when coupling is present and the zonal mean flow is assumed to be steady, the waves can drive vertically alternating jets, but still, in contrast to the gravity wave case, the structure is independent of the sign of the meridional phase speed; (iii) when coupling is present and time-dependent zonal mean flows are considered the waves can drive vertically and temporarily oscillating mean flows. The comparison with laboratory data from a rotating annulus experiment shows a qualitative agreement. It appears that the experiment captures the basic elements of the inertial wave mean flow coupling. The results might be relevant to understand how the Equatorial Deep Jets can be maintained against dissipation, a process currently discussed controversially.  相似文献

Abstract

Flow past a short obstacle in a rotating reference frame generates a wake that is crucial to the overall flow structure if the Rossby number is of the order of the quarter power of the Ekman number. We present here a theory for such flows for the case when the obstacle's top is an oblique, planar surface. The results arise from a combination of asymptotic analysis and numerical computation, and show that even weak asymmetry generates significant global effect on the entire flow-field. Comparisons with the experiments reported by Foster and Davies (1996) are generally good when the high edge is at 90° to the oncoming flow.  相似文献

The linear mechanism by which internal gravity waves (IGWs) are generated and subsequently intensified in a stably stratified dissipative ionosphere in the presence of an inhomogeneous zonal wind (shear flow) has been studied. In the case of shear flows, the operators of linear problems are nonself-adjoint and the corresponding eigenfunctions are nonorthogonal; a canonical approach can hardly be used to study such motions. It is more adequate to apply the so-called nonmodal calculation. Dynamic equations and equations of energy transfer of IGW disturbances in the ionosphere with a shear flow have been obtained based on a nonmodal approach. Exact analytical solutions for the constructed dynamic equations have been found. The growth rate of the IGW shear instability has been determined. It has been established that IGW disturbances are intensified in an algebraically power manner rather than exponentially in the course of time. The effectiveness of the linear mechanism by which IGWs are intensified when interacting with an inhomogeneous zonal wind is analyzed. It has been indicated that IGWs effectively obtain the shear flow energy during the linear evolution stage and substantially increase (by an order of magnitude) their amplitude and energy. The frequency and the wave vector of generated IGW modes depend on time; therefore, a wide spectrum of wavelike disturbances, depending on the linear, rather than nonlinear, turbulent effects, is formed in the ionosphere with a shear flow. Thereby, a new degree of freedom appears, and the turbulent state of atmospheric—ionospheric layers can be formed on IGW disturbances.  相似文献
