Flux variability is one of the defining characteristics of Seyfert galaxies, a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Although these variations are observed over a wide range of wavelengths, results on their flux variability characteristics in the ultraviolet (UV) band are very limited. We present here the long-term UV flux variability characteristics of a sample of fourteen Seyfert galaxies using data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer acquired between 1978 and 1995. We found that all the sources showed flux variations with no statistically significant differences in the amplitude of UV flux variation between shorter and longer wavelengths. Also, the flux variations between different near-UV (NUV, \(1850{-}3300\) Å) and far-UV (FUV, \(1150{-}2000\) Å) passbands in the rest frames of the objects are correlated with no time lag. The data show indications of (i) a mild negative correlation of UV variability with bolometric luminosity and (ii) weak positive correlation between UV variability and black hole mass. At FUV, about 50% of the sources show a strong correlation between spectral indices and flux variations with a hardening when brightening behaviour, while for the remaining sources the correlation is moderate. In NUV, the sources do show a harder spectrum when brighter, but the correlation is either weak or moderate.  相似文献

The ROSAT Bright Survey (RBS) aims to completely optically identify the more than 2000 brightest sources detected in the ROSAT all-sky survey at galactic latitudes |b| > 30° (excluding LMC, SMC, Virgo cluster). This paper presents a subsample of 66 bright point-like ROSAT survey sources with almost hard PSPC spectra, the hardness ratio HR1 is > 0.5 for most of the sources. Teh subsample could be nearly completely identified by low-resolution optical spectroscopy with the following breakdown into object classes: 31 Seyfert galaxies, 22 BL Lac candidates, 5 clusters of galaxies, 1 cataclysmic variable, and 5 bright stars. Only one object remained unidentified and one X-ray source was a spurious detection. The redshift distrbution peaks around 0.06 for the Seyferts and around 0.13 for the BL Lac candidates. Observations with medium spectral resolution were obtained for most of the new Seyfert galaxies. A large fraction (20 objects) are type 1 Seyfert galaxies, the other fraction includes Seyfert galaxies of type 1.5 – 1.8 (5 objects), two LINERs, and 4 possible narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1). About one third of the new Seyfert's have nearby companion galaxies displaying either emission or absorption lines at the same redshift. Among them are a couple of systems showing direct morphological evidence for interaction. The large fraction of interacting galaxies among our sample suggests a scenario where interaction is the main trigger of AGN activity.  相似文献

New mid-infrared spectra are presented of a number of oxygen-rich evolved stars which have IRAS LRS (Low Resolution Spectrometer) spectra that were classified as showing SiC emission. Two of the sources, IRC−20445 and IRC−20461, show the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands superposed on silicate emission features. Both objects have been classified as M supergiants. Several other sources show three-component spectra, with peaks at 10, 11 and 13 μm. The 13-μm source FI Lyr shows a narrow emission feature at 19 μm. Emission by oxide grains may be responsible for the 11-, 13- and 19-μm features. One object, IRC−20455, shows a self-absorbed silicate feature. There is no clear evidence for SiC emission in any of the spectra: the LRS spectra were erroneously classified as showing SiC emission because of the relatively strong 11-μm emission.  相似文献

Flux variability is a common feature of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), which is often related to intermittent events of disk accretion (EXors events in case of 3–4 magnitudes variations). Recently, thanks to the surveys carried out by the space missions Spitzer and WISE, it has become possible to perform statistical studies on the mid-IR variability on large samples of YSOs. As a follow-up of our recent statistical study on five star forming regions (Antoniucci et al., Astrophys. J. 782:51, 2014), we present the 3–5 μm variability study of the YSOs population of the Vela-D star forming region. We have compared the 3.6 μm and 4.5 μm Spitzer-IRAC fluxes of 181 YSOs in Vela-D with their WISE fluxes at 3.4 μm and 4.6 μm and selected those objects simultaneously varying in both bands. We have identified a robust sample of 34 variables. On the base of the infrared excess of the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and the magnitude vs. color variations, we select 5 EXors candidates, which will be systematically monitored to firmly ascertain their nature. The selected 34 variables represent ~18 % of the YSOs detected with Spitzer and WISE, a percentage higher than that of other young star forming regions. Conversely, the percentage of candidate EXors (2.7 %) is quite similar to that measured in Perseus, Ophiuchus and Serpens, and also equals that found in Vela-D on the base of Spitzer variability (Giannini et al., Astrophys. J. 704:606, 2009). Consistently with our finding presented in Antoniucci et al. (2014), this fraction equals the probability of observing the source once in burst and once in quiescence, under the hypothesis that the time elapsed between the two events is of about 0.5–1 year. Of the 5 selected EXors candidates, 3 are Class I sources, and 2 are flat-spectrum sources, a circumstance that suggests that accretion-driven variability is a common phenomenon during the earlier phases of the protostellar evolution. In the light of the new WISE data, we also re-examine a sample of 10 variables, which we had already selected in Giannini et al. (2009). From the inspection of their light curves, we select two flat-spectrum sources as the best EXors candidates.  相似文献

For a number of extragalactic sources of infrared radiation, for example some quasars and nuclei of Class I Seyfert galaxies that are also radio sources, there is a characteristic maximum in the radiation spectrum atv1011 Hz. We discuss a model in which this feature is regarded as intrinsic to the process of electron production, and in which the radiation is produced by the synchrotron mechanism. A two-component version of the model can be employed in the interpretation of the composite radiation spectra of several sources — 3C 84 (NGC 1275), 3C 120 and 3C 273.  相似文献

The infrared properties of ULIRGs in samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and 6dF Galaxy Survey (SDSS-2dF-6dF Survey) and ULIRGs in the IRAS 1 Jy sample are compared. We find that the infrared properties are quite similar in both the far infrared and the near infrared for those two samples. By using the IRAS two-color diagram and the 2MASS two-color diagram we find that 24 sources in the SDSS-2dF-6dF Survey are candidate Seyfert 1-like sources indicative of strong AGN-dominant nature.  相似文献

One of the key goals of NASA’s astrophysics program is to answer the question: How did galaxies evolve into the spirals and elliptical galaxies that we see today? We describe a space mission concept called Galaxy Evolution Spectroscopic Explorer (GESE) to address this question by making a large spectroscopic survey of galaxies at a redshift, z~1 (look-back time of ~8 billion years). GESE is a 1.5-m space telescope with an ultraviolet (UV) multi-object slit spectrograph that can obtain spectra of hundreds of galaxies per exposure. The spectrograph covers the spectral range, 0.2–0.4 μm at a spectral resolving power, R~500. This observed spectral range corresponds to 0.1–0.2 μm as emitted by a galaxy at a redshift, z=1. The mission concept takes advantage of two new technological advances: (1) light-weighted, wide-field telescope mirrors, and (2) the Next-Generation MicroShutter Array (NG-MSA) to be used as a slit generator in the multi-object slit spectrograph.  相似文献

We present a result of cross-correlating the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Faint Source Catalogue with the spectroscopic catalogues of galaxies in the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Final Data Release of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Second Data Release of the 6dF Galaxy Survey. We have identified 324 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) including 190 newly discovered ULIRGs, and two hyperluminous infrared galaxies. Adding these new ULIRGs, we increase the number of known ULIRGs by about 30 per cent. The reliability of the cross-correlation is estimated using the likelihood ratio method. The incompleteness of our sample introduced by the identification procedure in this study is estimated to be about 5 per cent. Our sample covers the redshift range of   z = 0.037–0.517  with a median redshift of     , which is larger than that     of the sample of previously known ULIRGs.  相似文献

We present the results of a study which uses a sample of 1822 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars with reliable Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) detections in the redshift range 1.7≤z≤4.38 to investigate the mid-infrared fraction of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars. The BAL quasars in the sample include both high-ionization BAL (HiBAL) quasars that show broad absorption from C?iv and low-ionization BAL (LoBAL) quasars that show additional broad absorption from Mg?ii. The fraction of C?iv BAL quasars with nonzero absorption index (AI) is found to be 38.7±1.2 %, in good agreement with that derived for the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) sample. The C?iv BAL quasar fractions remain constant with magnitude in the WISE 3.4 μm (W1) and 4.6 μm (W2) bands, and increase rapidly with decreasing magnitude in the WISE 12 μm (W3) and 22 μm (W4) bands. The nonzero AI fraction of 44.5±2.1 % determined in the WISE W4 band is more likely to represent the intrinsic BAL quasar fraction. No evidence that the fraction is a strong function of redshift is found. At 1.7≤z≤2.15, the overall mid-infrared LoBAL fraction is $3.3^{+0.6}_{-0.5}~\%$ and the fractions increase significantly with decreasing magnitude in all four of WISE bands. Moreover, it is found that the mean optical-to-WISE colors of BAL quasars are ?0.2 mag redder than that of non-BAL quasars, while the traditional (nonzero balnicity) BAL quasars are redder than the nontraditional BAL quasars by ?0.15 mag, which suggest a continuum of more reddening from non-BAL to nontraditional BAL to traditional BAL. No evidence that nontraditional BALs are a distinct class from traditional BALs is found. Finally, it is shown that the mean optical-to-WISE colors of LoBALs are ?0.4 mag redder than that of HiBALs at 1.7≤z≤2.15.  相似文献

We analyse the scaling of the X-ray power density spectra with the mass of the black hole in the examples of Cyg X-1 and the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. We show that the high-frequency tail of the power density spectrum can be successfully used for the determination of the black hole mass. We determine the masses of the black holes in six broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, five narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and two quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) using the available power density spectra. The proposed scaling is clearly appropriate for other Seyfert galaxies and QSOs. In all but one of the normal Seyferts, the resulting luminosity to Eddington luminosity ratio is smaller than 0.15, with the source MCG -6-15-30 being an exception. The applicability of the same scaling to a narrow-line Seyfert 1 is less clear and there may be a systematic shift between the power spectra of NLS1 and S1 galaxies of the same mass, leading to underestimation of the black hole mass. However, both the method based on variability and the method based on spectral fitting show that those galaxies have relatively low masses and a high luminosity to Eddington luminosity ratio, supporting the view of those objects as analogues of galactic sources in their high, soft or very high state, based on the overall spectral shape. The bulge masses of their host galaxies are similar to that of normal Seyfert galaxies, so they do not follow the black hole mass–bulge mass relation for Seyfert galaxies, being evolutionarily less advanced, as suggested by Mathur. The bulge mass–black hole mass relation in our sample is consistent with being linear, with the black hole to bulge ratio ∼0.03 per cent, similar to Wandel and Laor for low-mass objects, but significantly shifted from the relation of Magorrian et al. and McLure & Dunlop.  相似文献

The Exoplanet Characterization Observatory (EChO) is a space mission concept dedicated to the analysis of exoplanet atmospheres using low-resolution spectroscopy in the infrared region between 0.55 and 11 μm. A fraction of its time will be used for ancillary science. We discuss here the prospect of a small survey of L and T-type brown dwarfs. These cold objects show properties comparable to those of giant planets, with the advantage of being brighter and not perturbed by host stars, therefore, they are very useful to understand processes and properties of planet atmospheres. At the same time, brown dwarfs still pose some challenges to stellar models that must include the formation of clouds and sedimentation processes that occur at the low temperatures of these objects. Hence, our aim is to build up an homogeneous catalogue of spectra of brown dwarfs as well as to characterize the spectral variability observed on some of them, which is attributed to the presence of clouds in their atmospheres. We demonstrate that EChO could provide the spectra of brown dwarfs between 1 and 11 μm with enough accuracy to reach these goals. We also present the current number of known brown dwarfs and we suggest a list of possible targets, although future surveys will probably provide better targets at the time of EChO launch if the mission is selected.  相似文献

The spectral variations of three Mira variable carbon stars, V CrB, T Dra and V Cyg in the infrared are investigated based on ISO SWS data. It is found that either continua or molecular/dust features were variable with time in the infrared for these carbon stars during one and a half year observations. When stars were brighter the infrared continuum spectra became blue while stars were fainter the infrared continuum spectra became red. In addition, during spectral variations there were the correlation between the 3.05 μm HCN+C2H2 and the 5.2 μm C3 molecular band strengths and the anti-correlation between the 3.05 μm HCN+C2H2 molecular band strengths and 13.7 μm C2H2 band strengths while during variations the 11.3 μm SiC dust emission strengths were not clearly changed.  相似文献

The infrared photometric study of SDSS selected Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s) is presented in this paper. We have made cross-identifications for such NLS1s with 2MASS and WISE observations. Finally 992 NLS1s have 2MASS and WISE counterparts. Comparisons of NLS1s with the Broad Line Seyfert 1 (BLS1s) and Seyfert 2 galaxies are made. It is shown that from 1 µm to 5 µm NLS1s are redder than BLS1s and Seyfert 2 galaxies possibly due to the richer dust environment in NLS1 nuclei or to the orientation effect while in the longer wavelengths those three kinds of sources have quite similar behavior indicative of radiation mainly from the similar warm starburst-related dust and the related AGN dust.In addition, relations between infrared colors and related (to Hβ) strengths of some important lines are also investigated. The results show that the related strengths of [FeII] 4570 Å are positively correlated with infrared colors in the 1–5 µm region, but negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 12–22 µm region; the related strength of [OIII] 5007 Å are negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 1–5 µm region, but positively correlated with infrared colors in the 12–22 µm region; the related strength of [NII]6583 Å are also negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 1–5 µm region, but positively correlated with infrared colors in the 12–22 µm region. Therefore it is indicated that the behavior of [FeII] 4570 Å is just opposed to that for [OIII] 5007 Å and [NII] 6583 Å This result may be caused by different origins of such lines.  相似文献

We present the results of our optical identifications of several hard X-ray sources from the INTEGRAL all-sky survey obtained over 14 years of observations. Having improved the positions of these objects in the sky with the X-ray telescope (XRT) of the Swift observatory and the XMMNewton observatory, we have identified their counterparts using optical and infrared sky survey data. We have obtained optical spectra for more than half of the objects from our sample with the RTT-150 and AZT-33IK telescopes, which have allowed us to establish the nature of the objects and to measure their redshifts. Six sources are shown to be extragalactic in origin and to belong to Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies (IGR J01017+6519, IGR J08215-1320, IGR J08321-1808, IGR J16494-1740, IGR J17098-2344, IGR J17422-2108); we have failed to draw definitive conclusions about the nature of four more objects (IGR J11299-6557, IGR J14417-5533, IGR J18141-1823, IGR J18544+0839), but, judging by circumstantial evidence, they are most likely also extragalactic objects. For one more object (IGR J18044-1829) no unequivocal identification has been made.  相似文献

A sample of 230 galaxies has been compiled based on their IRAS FSC fluxes to study their multiwavelength properties and carry out comparative analyses with other similar samples. To understand the nature of these galaxies, a comparison with a sample of bright ULIRGs having fluxes at 60 μm  > 1 Jy and 14 optically faint IRAS FSC galaxies is presented. This comparison shows that galaxies found by IRAS are not always strong infrared sources and that the objects from the sample of ULIRGs represent a sample of extreme galaxies, which are very powerful infrared sources. We have confirmed the consistency between Star Formation Rates (SFRs) calibrated based on luminosities of the PAH feature at 7.7 μm and radio 1.4 GHz flux densities. We have estimated the extinction for our 230 objects using SFRs calibrated from the PAH feature compared to ultraviolet flux, which shows that only 1% of the ultraviolet continuum typically escapes extinction by dust within a starburst.  相似文献

The Unified Model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) predicts that the sole difference between type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies nuclei is the viewing angle with respect to an obscuring structure around the nucleus. High-energy photons above 20 keV are not affected by this absorption if the column is Compton thin, so their 30–100 keV spectra should be the same. However, the observed spectra at high energies appear to show a systematic difference, with type 1 Seyfert galaxies having Γ∼ 2.1 whereas type 2 Seyfert galaxies are harder with Γ∼ 1.9. We estimate the mass and the accretion rate of Seyferts detected in these high-energy samples, and show that they span a wide range in   L / L Edd  . Both black hole binary systems and AGN show a correlation between spectral softness and Eddington fraction, so these samples are probably heterogeneous, spanning a range of intrinsic spectral indices which are hidden in individual objects by poor signal-to-noise ratio. However, the mean Eddington fraction for the type 1 Seyfert galaxies is higher than for the type 2 Seyfert galaxies, so the samples are consistent with this being the origin of the softer spectra seen in type 1 Seyfert galaxies. We stress that high-energy spectra alone are not necessarily a clean test of Unification schemes, but that the intrinsic nuclear properties should also change with   L / L Edd  .  相似文献

We have performed a statistical study of the properties of the broadband continuum of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) by collecting ratio,infrared, optical and X-ray continuum data from various databases and comparedthe results with control samples of Broad Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLSls). We findthat the fraction (~ 6%) of Radio Loud (RL) NLSls is significantly less than thatof BLS1s (~ 13%), which is caused by the lack of radio-very-loud sources in theformer. The rarity of RL NLS1s, especially radio-very-loud ones, is consistent withthe scenario of small black hole and high accretion rate for NLSls. Six new radio loudNLSls are found and five RL NLS1 candidates are presented. In comparison withthe BLS1s, the NLS1s tend to have stronger far infrared emission, cooler infraredcolors and redder B- K color, which suggests that NLS1s are hosted by dust-richernuclei. The NLS1s also show steeper soft X-ray spectrum and large soft X-rayto optical flux ratio, while a significant fraction show fiat soft X-ray spectra. Atleast two factors can account for this, absorption and spectral variability. We alsoperform a correlation analysis between various broad band data. It is found thatmost correlations identified for NLS1s are also valid for radio quiet BLS1s: (1) theoptical colors are anti-correlated with X-ray spectral index; (2) higher optical, X-ray and NIR luminosity objects show bluer optical colors and red H - K color; (3)higher luminosity objects show warmer IRAS color; (4) the radio loudness correlateswith B - K and X-ray to optical flux ratio. Radio loud objects behave somewhatdifferently in a few correlations.  相似文献

We present spectra of six type 1 and two type 2 Seyfert galaxies, a starburst galaxy and a compact narrow-line radio galaxy, taken in two spectral ranges centred around the near-infrared Ca  ii triplet (∼8600 Å), and the Mgb stellar feature at 5180 Å. We measured the equivalent widths (EWs) of these features and the Fe52 and Fe53 spectral indices.
We found that the strength of the infrared Ca  ii triplet (CaT) in type 1 Seyfert galaxies with prominent central point sources is larger than what would be expected from the observed strength of the blue indices. This could be explained by the presence of red supergiants in the nuclei of Seyfert 1 galaxies. On the other hand, the blue indices of these galaxies could also be diluted by the strong Fe  ii multiplets that can be seen in their spectra.
We have also measured the stellar‐ and gas-velocity dispersions of the galaxies in the sample. The stellar velocity dispersions were measured using both the Mgb and CaT stellar features. The velocity dispersion of the gas in the narrow-line region (NLR) was measured using the strong emission lines [O  iii ] λλ 5007, 4959 and [S  iii ] λ 9069. We compare the gas- and star-velocity dispersions and find that the magnitudes of both are correlated in Seyfert galaxies.
Most of the Seyfert 1 galaxies that we observe have stellar‐velocity dispersions somewhat greater than that of the gas in the NLR.  相似文献

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey has now measured in excess of 160 000 galaxy redshifts. This paper presents the power spectrum of the galaxy distribution, calculated using a direct Fourier transform based technique. We argue that, within the k -space region     , the shape of this spectrum should be close to that of the linear density perturbations convolved with the window function of the survey. This window function and its convolving effect on the power spectrum estimate are analysed in detail. By convolving model spectra, we are able to fit the power-spectrum data and provide a measure of the matter content of the Universe. Our results show that models containing baryon oscillations are mildly preferred over featureless power spectra. Analysis of the data yields 68 per cent confidence limits on the total matter density times the Hubble parameter     , and the baryon fraction     , assuming scale-invariant primordial fluctuations.  相似文献

Infrared spectra of submicrometre-sized particles of several protosilicates have been used to derive mass absorption coefficients. These data have been applied in order to describe the infrared radiation from the source OH 26.5+0.6 in terms of a simple model. A good fit of the 10 m absorption feature could be achieved, but some discrepancies remain in the 20 m region. The reasons for the weakness of the 20 m band in infrared sources are discussed.The laboratory spectra revealed that the samples contained a small admixture of carbonates. Thus, some statements about the infrared spectrum of submicrometre-sized carbonate particles could also be made.  相似文献
