Steerable wavelet analysis of CMB structures alignment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper reviews the application of a novel methodology for analysing the isotropy of the universe by probing the alignment of local structures in the CMB. The strength of the proposed methodology relies on the steerable wavelet filtering of the CMB signal. One the one hand, the filter steerability renders the computation of the local orientation of the CMB features affordable in terms of computation time. On the other hand, the scale-space nature of the wavelet filtering allows to explore the alignment of the local structures at different scales, probing possible different phenomena. We present the WMAP first-year data analysis recently performed by the same authors (Wiaux et al.), where an extremely significant anisotropy was found. In particular, a preferred plane was detected, having a normal direction with a northern end position at (θ) = (34°, 331°), close to the northern end of the CMB dipole axis. In addition, a most preferred direction was found in that plane, with a northern end direction at (θ) = (71°, 91°), very close to the north ecliptic pole. This result synthesised for the first time previously reported anomalies identified in the direction of the dipole and the ecliptic poles axes. In a forthcoming paper (Vielva et al.), we have extended our analysis to the study of individual frequency maps finding first indications for discarding foregrounds as the origin of the anomaly. We have also tested that the preferred orientations are defined by structures homogeneously distributed in the sky, rather than from localised regions. We have also analysed the WMAP 3-year data, finding the same anomaly pattern, although at a slightly lower significance level.  相似文献

Using local morphological measures on the sphere defined through a steerable wavelet analysis, we examine the three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe WMAP and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data for correlation induced by the integrated Sachs–Wolfe (ISW) effect. The steerable wavelet constructed from the second derivative of a Gaussian allows one to define three local morphological measures, namely the signed-intensity, orientation and elongation of local features. Detections of correlation between the WMAP and NVSS data are made with each of these morphological measures. The most significant detection is obtained in the correlation of the signed-intensity of local features at a significance of 99.9 per cent. By inspecting signed-intensity sky maps, it is possible for the first time to see the correlation between the WMAP and NVSS data by eye. Foreground contamination and instrumental systematics in the WMAP data are ruled out as the source of all significant detections of correlation. Our results provide new insight on the ISW effect by probing the morphological nature of the correlation induced between the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure of the Universe. Given the current constraints on the flatness of the Universe, our detection of the ISW effect again provides direct and independent evidence for dark energy. Moreover, this new morphological analysis may be used in future to help us to better understand the nature of dark energy.  相似文献

With our experiment on the satellite IMP-6 (Explorer 43) we are able to track the position of type III solar bursts in elevation as well as elongation. We do this by measuring the correlations between signals on an electric dipole antenna which is approximately normal to the plane of the ecliptic, and either of two antennas rotating in the ecliptic plane. The result is that the sources are generally close to the ecliptic plane, close enough that their elevation above the ecliptic cannot account for the large apparent width which we and others observe, and that this width must therefore be real.  相似文献

We study the local structure of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) tem-perature maps released by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) team, and find a new kind of structure, which can be described as follows: a peak (or valley) of average temperature is often followed by a peak of temperature fluctuation that is 4° away. This structure is important for the following reasons: both the well known cold spot detected by Cruz et al. and the hot spot detected by Vielva et al. with the same technology (the third spot in their article) have such structure; more spots that are similar to them can be found on CMB maps and they also tend to be significant cold/hot spots; if we change the 4° characteristic into an artificial one, such as 3° or 5°, there will be less "similar spots", and the temperature peaks or valleys will be less significant. The presented "sim-ilar spots" have passed a strict consistency test which requires them to be significant on at least three different CMB temperature maps. We hope that this article could arouse some interest in the relationship of average temperature with temperature fluctuation in local areas; meanwhile, we are also trying to find an explanation for it which might be important to CMB observation and theory.  相似文献

We introduce new symmetry-based methods to test for isotropy in cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Each angular multipole is factored into unique products of power eigenvectors, related multipoles and singular values that provide two new rotationally invariant measures mode by mode. The power entropy and directional entropy are new tests of randomness that are independent of the usual CMB power. Simulated Galactic plane contamination is readily identified. The ILC– WMAP data maps show seven axes well aligned with one another and the direction Virgo. Parameter free statistics find 12 independent cases of extraordinary axial alignment, low power entropy, or both having 5 per cent probability or lower in an isotropic distribution. Isotropy of the ILC maps is ruled out to confidence levels of better than 99.9 per cent, whether or not coincidences with other puzzles coming from the Virgo axis are included. Our work shows that anisotropy is not confined to the low l region, but extends over a much larger l range.  相似文献

We estimate the acceleration on the Local Group (LG) from the 2 Micron All-Sky Redshift Survey (2MRS). The sample used includes about 23 200 galaxies with extinction-corrected magnitudes brighter than   K s= 11.25  and it allows us to calculate the flux-weighted dipole. The near-infrared flux-weighted dipoles are very robust because they closely approximate a mass-weighted dipole, bypassing the effects of redshift distortions and require no preferred reference frame. This is combined with the redshift information to determine the change in dipole with distance. The misalignment angle between the LG and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole drops to  12°± 7°  at around  50  h −1 Mpc  , but then increases at larger distances, reaching  21°± 8°  at around  130  h −1 Mpc  . Exclusion of the galaxies Maffei 1, Maffei 2, Dwingeloo 1, IC342 and M87 brings the resultant flux dipole to  14°± 7°  away from the CMB velocity dipole. In both cases, the dipole seemingly converges by  60  h −1 Mpc  . Assuming convergence, the comparison of the 2MRS flux dipole and the CMB dipole provides a value for the combination of the mass density and luminosity bias parameters  Ω0.6m/ b L= 0.40 ± 0.09  .  相似文献

An analytical representation and observational verification of a new harmonic scheme for the local system are presented. In it massive shell structures (spurs) play a dominant role, in combination with belts of stars, gas and dust. The geometry of the triaxial local system is closely coupled to the ecliptic coordinate system. Each axis has its own equator and its own discrete, periodic system of meridians. The largest axis, z, is normal to the S plane passing through the cores of four spurs (I-IV). Six meridians intersect along this axis, including the Gould belt (GB), the Vaucouleurs-Dolidze (V-D) belt, and the G plane, which is perpendicular to the ecliptic E at the solstice points. Four meridians, including E and S, intersect along the middle axis x, which coincides with the equinoctial line. The z axis is inclined by H"45° to E and by H"21° to the galactic plane. The overall number of nonrepeating principal planes in the local system is nine. Counts of stars brighter than V=9m confirms that they are concentrated along all the principal planes. As a symmetry plane, the meridian perpendicular to the Gould belt ( GB) divides the system of spurs into two groups: (I, IV, Dor) and (II, III, Eri). Each encompasses a grid of 5 halves of the z meridians and isolates a group and the spurs within the group. At the same time, as bridges the x meridians and their equator G couple the cores of some of the spurs with the shells of others both within their own and in opposite groups. The convergence of the meridians (belts) to the X, Y, and Z poles couples all the details with the local system as a whole. The symmetry of the local system with its discrete elements resembles a crystal.  相似文献

We present a geometric study of the radio and γ-ray pulsar B1055−52 based on recent observations at the Parkes radio telescope. We conclude that the pulsar's magnetic axis is inclined at an angle of 75° to its rotation axis and that both its radio main pulse and interpulse are emitted at the same height above their respective poles. This height is unlikely to be higher or much lower than 700 km, a typical value for radio pulsars.
It is argued that the radio interpulse arises from emission formed on open fieldlines close to the magnetic axis which do not pass through the magnetosphere's null (zero-charge) surface. However, the main pulse emission must originate from fieldlines lying well outside the polar cap boundary beyond the null surface, and farther away from the magnetic axis than those of the outer gap region where the single γ-ray peak is generated. This casts doubt on the common assumption that all pulsars have closed, quiescent, corotating regions stretching to the light cylinder.  相似文献

We use the PSC z IRAS galaxy redshift survey to analyse the cosmological galaxy dipole out to a distance of 300  h 1 Mpc. The masked area is filled in three different ways, first by sampling the whole sky at random, secondly by using neighbouring areas to fill a masked region, and thirdly using a spherical harmonic analysis. The method of treatment of the mask is found to have a significant effect on the final calculated dipole.
The conversion from redshift space to real space is accomplished by using an analytical model of the cluster and void distribution, based on 88 nearby groups, 854 clusters and 163 voids, with some of the clusters and all of the voids found from the PSC z data base.
The dipole for the whole PSC z sample appears to have converged within a distance of 200  h 1 Mpc and yields a value for , consistent with earlier determinations from IRAS samples by a variety of methods. For b =1, the 2 range for 0 is 0.431.02.
The direction of the dipole is within 13° of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole, the main uncertainty in direction being associated with the masked area behind the Galactic plane. The improbability of further major contributions to the dipole amplitude coming from volumes larger than those surveyed here means that the question of the origin of the CMB dipole is essentially resolved.  相似文献

The Moon’s physical libration in latitude generated by gravitational forces caused by the Earth’s oblateness has been examined by a vector analytical method. Libration oscillations are described by a close set of five linear inhomogeneous differential equations, the dispersion equation has five roots, one of which is zero. A complete solution is obtained. It is revealed that the Earth’s oblateness: a) has little effect on the instantaneous axis of Moon’s rotation, but causes an oscillatory rotation of the body of the Moon with an amplitude of 0.072″ and pulsation period of 16.88 Julian years; b) causes small nutations of poles of the orbit and of the ecliptic along tight spirals, which occupy a disk with a cut in a center and with radius of 0.072″. Perturbations caused by the spherical Earth generate: a) physical librations in latitude with an amplitude of 34.275″; b) nutational motion for centers of small spiral nutations of orbit (ecliptic) pole over ellipses with semi-major axes of 113.850″ (85.158″) and the first pole rotates round the second one along a circle with radius of 28.691″; c) nutation of the Moon’s celestial pole over an ellipse with a semi-major axis of 45.04″ and with an axes ratio of about 0.004 with a period of T = 27.212 days. The principal ellipse’s axis is directed tangentially with respect to the precession circumference, along which the celestial pole moves nonuniformly nearly in one dimension. In contrast to the accepted concept, the latitude does not change while the Moon’s poles of rotation move. The dynamical reason for the inclination of the Moon’s mean equator with respect to the ecliptic is oblateness of the body of the Moon.  相似文献

We compare the anisotropic properties of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps constructed based on the data of NASA’s WMAP (9th year of observations) and ESA’s Planck (2015 release) space missions. In our analysis, we use two two-dimensional estimators of the scatter of the signal on a sphere, which amount to algorithms of mapping the ratio of the scatter in the Northern and Southern hemispheres depending on the method of dividing (specifically, rotating and cutting) the sky into hemispheres. The scatter is computed either as a standard deviation σ, or as the difference between the minimum and maximum values on a given hemisphere. Applying both estimators to the CMB anisotropy datameasured by two spacemissions, Planck and WMAP, we compared the variations of the background at different angular scales.Maps with a resolution of l ≤ 100 show that the division into regions with different levels of statistical anisotropy lies close to the ecliptic plane, and after preliminary removal of the l ≤ 20 harmonics from the CMB data, the anisotropic signal related to the Galaxy begins to dominate.  相似文献

Phase transitions taking place during the inflationary epoch give rise to bubbles of true vacuum embedded in the false vacuum. These bubbles can imprint a distinctive signal on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We evaluate the feasibility of detecting these signatures with wavelets in CMB maps, such as those that will be made available by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Planck mission.  相似文献

As a concluding paper in this series, we present an analysis of the spatial orientations of galaxies in seven Abell clusters of BM type II and compare the results with previous works. Four BM type II clusters (A1767, A1809, A2554, A2721) show a similar preferred alignment: spin vectors of galaxies tend to lie in the local supercluster plane and the projections of the spin vector tend to be oriented perpendicular with respect to the Virgo cluster centre. A preferred alignment of galaxies in cluster A2554 is noticed in both the two- and three-dimensional analyses. In a comparison with previous work, we noticed a systematic change (with distance, radial velocity, morphology and magnitude) in the galaxy alignments from early-type (BM I) to late-type (BM III) clusters. Possible explanations of these systematic changes will be discussed.  相似文献

We consider wavelets as a tool to perform a variety of tasks in the context of analysing cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. Using spherical Haar wavelets, we define a position and angular-scale-dependent measure of power that can be used to assess the existence of spatial structure. We apply planar Daubechies wavelets for the identification and removal of point sources from small sections of sky maps. Our technique can successfully identify virtually all point sources that are above 3 and more than 80 per cent of those above 1 . We discuss the trade-offs between the levels of correct and false detections. We denoise and compress a 100 000-pixel CMB map by a factor of 10 in 5 s, achieving a noise reduction of about 35 per cent. In contrast to Wiener filtering, the compression process is model-independent and very fast. We discuss the usefulness of wavelets for power spectrum and cosmological-parameter estimation. We conclude that at present wavelet functions are most suitable for identifying localized sources.  相似文献

We have estimated the cosmic microwave background (CMB) variance from the three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ( WMAP ) data, finding a value which is significantly lower than the one expected from Gaussian simulations using the WMAP best-fitting cosmological model, at a significance level of 98.7 per cent. This result is even more prominent if we consider only the North ecliptic hemisphere (99.8 per cent). Different analyses have been performed in order to identify a possible origin for this anomaly. In particular, we have studied the behaviour of single-radiometer and single-year data as well as the effect of residual foregrounds and 1/f noise, finding that none of these possibilities can explain the low value of the variance. We have also tested the effect of varying the cosmological parameters, finding that the estimated CMB variance tends to favour higher values of n s than the one of the WMAP best-fitting model. In addition, we have also tested the consistency between the estimated CMB variance and the actual measured CMB power spectrum of the WMAP data, finding a strong discrepancy. A possible interpretation of this result could be a deviation from Gaussianity and/or isotropy of the CMB.  相似文献

Direction finding measurements with the plasma wave experiments on the HAWKEYE 1 and IMP-8 satellites are used to find the source locations of type III solar radio bursts in elevation (geocentric solar ecliptic latitude) and azimuth (geocentric solar ecliptic longitude) in a frequency range from 31.1 kHz to 500 kHz. IMP-8 has its spin axis perpendicular to the ecliptic plane, hence by analyzing the spin modulation of the signals the location of the type III burst projected into the ecliptic can be found. HAWKEYE 1 has its spin axis nearly parallel to the ecliptic plane, hence the elevation of the source may also be determined. The trajectory of the electrons generating the burst, projected onto the ecliptic plane, follows an Archimedean spiral. Out of the ecliptic plane the trajectory is at a nearly constant heliographic latitude. The electrons originate from a region near a solar flare. With direction measurements of elevation and azimuth along with the modulation factor it is possible to determine the source size. Typical half angle source sizes range from 60° at 500 kHz to 40° at 56.2 kHz as viewed from the sun.  相似文献

A new formalism is derived for the analysis and exact reconstruction of band-limited signals on the sphere with directional wavelets. It represents an evolution of a previously developed wavelet formalism developed by Antoine & Vandergheynst and Wiaux et al. The translations of the wavelets at any point on the sphere and their proper rotations are still defined through the continuous three-dimensional rotations. The dilations of the wavelets are directly defined in harmonic space through a new kernel dilation, which is a modification of an existing harmonic dilation. A family of factorized steerable functions with compact harmonic support which are suitable for this kernel dilation are first identified. A scale-discretized wavelet formalism is then derived, relying on this dilation. The discrete nature of the analysis scales allows the exact reconstruction of band-limited signals. A corresponding exact multi-resolution algorithm is finally described and an implementation is tested. The formalism is of interest notably for the denoising or the deconvolution of signals on the sphere with a sparse expansion in wavelets. In astrophysics, it finds a particular application for the identification of localized directional features in the cosmic microwave background data, such as the imprint of topological defects, in particular, cosmic strings, and for their reconstruction after separation from the other signal components.  相似文献

We discuss spherical needlets and their properties. Needlets are a form of spherical wavelets which do not rely on any kind of tangent plane approximation and enjoy good localization properties in both pixel and harmonic space; moreover needlet coefficients are asymptotically uncorrelated at any fixed angular distance, which makes their use in statistical procedures very promising. In view of these properties, we believe needlets may turn out to be especially useful in the analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) data on the incomplete sky, as well as of other cosmological observations. As a final advantage, we stress that the implementation of needlets is computationally very convenient and may rely completely on standard data analysis packages such as healp ix.  相似文献

Based on the single-fluid MHD model of Mars space simulation, this paper has studied the magnetic field structure in the near-Mars space and investigated the influence of Martian crustal magnetic anomalies on the magnetic field structure. In the process of the solar wind interaction with Mars, the bow shock and magnetic pile-up region are produced. The interplanetary magnetic lines are curved and deformed while they are towed toward the two poles by the solar wind. The majority of magnetic lines bypass the two poles, then leave behind a ‘V-shaped’ structure in the magnetotail behind Mars. In the crust of Mars, the local magnetic anomalies have a noticeable influence on the magnetic field structure. The magnetic anomalies at different positions and in different intensities interact with the solar wind to form the mini-magnetospheres of different structures and morphologies, such as the towed mini-magnetosphere and the mini-magnetosphere with open magnetic lines. The local magnetic anomalies have changed the near-Mars magnetic field structure, and probably changed the plasma distribution as well.  相似文献

A three-dimensional model of the magnetic field configuration in the heliosphere is constructed by assuming that the interplanetary magnetic field consists of four components, (i) the solar dipole, (ii) a large number of small spherical dipoles located along an equatorial circle just inside the Sun (representing the magnetic field line arcade), (iii) the field of the poloidal current system generated by the solar unipolar induction and (iv) the field of an extensive current disc around the Sun lying in the ecliptic plane. The magnetic field intensity at a distance of 1 A.U. (about 20 R⊙ above the ecliptic plane) is normalized to fit the observed spiral configuration.  相似文献
