Electrical conductivity, σ, of six ultramafic rocks (garnet-bearing peridotites and an eclogite) has been investigated in the temperature range 670–1820 K under known ?O2 environment. Between 670 and ~1320 K σ increases with 1/T monotonically, first slowly, by 1–1.5 orders of magnitude. Above 1320 K σ increases sharply; an increase of 3–4 orders of magnitude is observed between 1320 and 1670 K. In the same temperature range the σ values for all the six rocks fall within 1.5 orders of magnitude, the lowest conductivity being for a spinel lherzolite. The range of σ values is narrowed at higher temperatures. The differences in σ values above 1470 K may be explained on the basis of varying degrees of partial melting in the rocks. Over the entire range of temperature, the σ values for the ultramafic rocks are lower than those reported for basalts but higher (by 1–2 orders of magnitude) than those for single-crystal olivines.  相似文献

The Ronda peridotite massif in southern Spain originated from the upper mantle, evidently as a rapidly rising diapir. Major and trace element abundance trends of the peridotites reflect their origin as residues from partial melting of garnet lherzolite. About 5% of the massif consists of mafic rocks, mainly pyroxenites and gabbros. They occur as concordant layers amidst the peridotites, and these layers do not cross-cut each other. However, major and trace element data show that the mafic layers do not have the geochemical characteristics of primary melts. We conclude that crystal/liquid fractionation occurred at high pressures ( > 19 kbar) as melts migrated through magma conduits towards the cooler exterior portion of the diapir. This process generated a sequence of “cumulates” (mainly clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + spinel and clinopyroxene + garnet) along the walls of the conduits which are now represented by the mafic layers.  相似文献

Occurrences of peralkaline acid volcanic rocks on oceanic islands are reviewed. Peralkaline differentiates are usually associated with mildly alkaline or transitional basalts and often with related sodic intermediate rocks. A compositional gap between basaltic and salic rocks is not invariably present. Although a comenditic end member is more usual in the oceanic suites, pantellerites are particularly well developed on Socorro Island and also on Gran Canaria where they form extensive ignimbrite sheets. There may be a genetic distinction between peralkaline rocks of islands which lie near the crests of oceanic rises and those which are built on broad submarine plateaux.  相似文献

The distribution of U in volcanic rocks from two transects across the Central Andes (latitudes 27°–28° S and 16°–18° S, respectively) differs from that of K. For a given SiO2, content of the rocks, K systematically increases with the distance from the trench, while the highest U abundances are found in the rocks overlying the thickest segments of the continental crust, which are situated in the middle parts of the transects. It is suggested that this variation of U reflects crustal contamination.  相似文献

Data for the diffusion of cations in pyroxenes are relevant to a variety of sub-solidus processes including order-disorder and exsolution. Similar data must also be available if the reliability of geobarometers and geothermometers involving pyroxenes is to be assessed. Two types of diffusion experiment have been performed to determine cation diffusion rates in pyroxenes: (1) interdiffusion between single crystals of diopside and polycrystalline sinters enriched in Al and Fe, and (2) interdiffusion between single crystals of diopside and a glass of the same composition which was isotopically enriched in26Mg and43Ca. Following high-temperature annealing for periods up to several hundred hours, analysis of the diffusion couples, using an electron microprobe and an ion microprobe respectively, failed to show any measurable diffusion profiles. From these “null result” experiments the diffusion coefficients (D) for Al and Fe in diopside are estimated to be less than4×10?14cm2s?1 at 1200°C, and values ofD for Ca and Mg in diopside are estimated to be less than7 × 10?14cm2s?1 at 1250°C. These rates are significantly slower than published tracer-type diffusion data for Ca and Al.A review of studies of order-disorder, microstructural coarsening, and diffusion in pyroxenes suggest that activation energies for cation exchange are typically in excess of 60 kcal mol?1. Transport rates will be assisted, and activation energies lowered by sample non-stoichiometry, inhomogeneities, high dislocation densities and the presence of water.The collective data for Al, Mg and Ca diffusion in diopside indicate diffusion coefficients? 10?15cm2s?1 at 1200°C. A comparison with data for diffusion in garnet, olivine and spinel suggests that pyroxenes may have the highest blocking temperatures.  相似文献

Neutron activation analysis has been used to determine the concentration of tin in the U.S.G.S. diabase W-1, the six new U.S.G.S. standards G-2, GSP-1, AGV-1, PCC-1, DTS-1, and BCR-1, and in the standard tonalite T-1. Reproducibility is good for duplicate analyses, but there are differences from previously reported data.  相似文献

A suite of highly depleted peridotite xenoliths in East Serbian Palaeogene basanites represents the lithospheric mantle beneath the Balkan Peninsula. The xenoliths are harzburgites, clinopyroxene-poor lherzolites and rare dunites. They contain mostly <5 vol.% of modal clinopyroxene and are characterized by high Mg# in silicates (>91), high Cr# in spinel (mostly 0.5–0.7), and by distinctively low Al2O3 contents in orthopyroxene (mostly 1–2 wt.%). They have experienced some mantle metasomatism which has slightly obscured their original composition. Nevertheless, the general characteristics of the xenoliths imply a composition which is significantly more depleted than most non-cratonic sub-continental mantle xenolith suites, as well as orogenic peridotites and abyssal peridotites. Geological and compositional evidence suggests that the xenoliths do not represent Archean mantle. The existence of Proterozoic mantle cannot be entirely excluded, although it is in disagreement with geological evidence. On the other hand, the studied xenoliths are compositionally very similar to peridotites of modern oceanic sub-arc settings. The existence of such a depleted lithospheric mantle segment is also inferred from the presence of rare orthopyroxene-rich xenoliths in the same suite. These are interpreted to have originated as lithospheric precipitates of high-Mg, SiO2-saturated magmas that require a highly depleted mantle source. Such source is typically required by boninitic-like magmas of intraoceanic suprasubduction settings. A proposed geodynamic model to explain these observations involves accretion or underplating of the lower parts of the Tethyan oceanic lithosphere during the Upper Jurassic closure of the eastern branch of the Vardar ocean.  相似文献

Geological observations in the central part of Tokunoshima in the Amami Islands, Southwest Japan, reveal that discrete layers of serpentinite, dioritic gneiss, and amphibolite are intercalated into pelitic schist and these rock bodies form a northwest‐dipping tectonic stack. A subhorizontal psammitic schist layer overlies them. These rocks underwent ductile deformation that is denoted by penetrative foliation and mineral lineation. Microstructures of the sheared metamorphic rocks and serpentinite indicate top‐to‐the‐east, ‐southeast or ‐south (hanging‐wall up) displacements. The en echelon array of rock bodies is interpreted as a duplex with the psammitic schist layer on its top and the pelitic schist layer on its bottom. It is inferred that the serpentinite‐bearing duplex was formed due to the tectonic erosion and the subsequent accretionary growth operated in a Cretaceous or older subduction zone. Tokunoshima has been considered to belong to the Shimanto Belt. However, regional low‐pressure and high‐temperature type amphibolite‐facies metamorphism and related ductile deformation have not been recognized in the other areas of the Shimanto Belt. There is no metamorphic rock occurrence comparable to that of Tokunoshima in the neighboring islands. The metamorphic rocks in Tokunoshima can be correlated to any of low‐pressure/temperature type metamorphic regions in Kyushu.  相似文献

A palaeomagnetic pole is established at 25.1°N 273.9°E (dp = 10.6°, dm = 14.3°) from the norite-charnockite complex at Angmagssalik, emplaced at 1800 Ma. A somewhat older palaeomagnetic pole at 4.2°S 246.7°E (dp = 4.2°, dm = 8.3°) is obtained from Archaean gneisses close to the northern boundary of the Nagssugtoqidian mobile belt; reversals of magnetization are present here. Both magnetizations were imposed during slow cooling following the (late) Nagssugtoqidian metamorphism.In general the gneisses, dyke amphibolites and granite of the Nagssugtoqidian mobile belt are unstably magnetized; their magnetization is attributable to the Earth's present field, and is often extremely weak.A pseudotachylyte within the Archaean gneisses has had a long cooling history. A fragment of the remanence reflects the magnetization characteristic of the Archaean gneisses, whereas most of the magnetization corresponds to a palaeomagnetic pole near that of the Angmagssalik complex. The pseudotachylyte is much older than its magnetizations.An apparent polar wander path is presented for Greenland at ca. 1750 Ma based on the above results and data from west Greenland.  相似文献

The petrological and geochemical aspects of the ultramafic and basic plutonic rocks of Betancuria Massif are examined. The rocks consist of gradational varieties of wehrlite, pyroxenite, olivine-gabbro and gabbro formed mainly by magnesium-rich olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase. The Complex exhibits structures and textures characteristic of layered igneous rocks;i.e., banding, layering, lamination, etc...; rocks are therefore considered as cumulates or magmatic sediments. The Complex has undergone a deep process of alkalinisation produced by the syenite and trachyte ring-dykes intrusion and by the existence of carbonatite veins. Rocks close to the syenite-trachyte intrusions show an increase in alkali feldspars. The presence of amphibole (kaersutite) is the first steep in the alkalinisation process and it is related to the disappearence of pyroxene. Extreme transformations of the gabbroidic rocks are found when they come in contact with the carbonatites. The age of the Complex is unknown but field evidence lead us to conclude that it is older than any other visible formation of the Island.  相似文献

In the East Ligurian segment of the North Apennines, eugeosynclinal sequences which contain ophiolitic rocks have been tectonically emplaced onto approximately coeval miogeosynclinal sediments. These allochthonous sequences represent the floor of a Mesozoic ocean which closed during the early Tertiary. The ophiolitic rocks consist of serpentinite, gabbro, pillowed and massive basalts, and breccias derived from these lithologies. They are overlain with depositional contacts by Upper Jurassic-Cretaceous pelagic cherts, limestones, and a shale/limestone sequence.The ophiolitic breccias attain thicknesses up to 100 m and strike lengths up to a few kilometres, and consist largely of unorganized accumulations of sand- to block-sized clasts. Compositions at specific horizons may range from oligomict breccias containing gabbro, basalt, or serpentinite fragments, to polymict breccias consisting of any mixture of these lithologies. Most of the breccias probably represent slow talus accumulations at the base of major submarine fault scarps which have exposed gabbro and serpentinite to submarine erosion. Direct exposure of gabbro and serpentinite on the ocean floor is also indicated by the occurrence of stratigraphically intact contacts between these lithologies and overlying pelagic sediments (generally cherts). The distribution and thickness of the breccias and volcanics, and the distribution of the gabbro and serpentinite, can vary greatly within distances of a few kilometres, thus producing complex heterogeneous sequences consisting of laterally impersistent lithological units.Recent observations and deep drilling of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and other rifted ridges have revealed occurrences of significant thicknesses of basaltic, serpentinitic, and gabbroic breccias upon and within the volcanic layer of the oceanic crust, as well as the direct submarine exposure of plutonic rocks. It is therefore likely that the East Ligurian sequences represent parts of rifted ridge-generated crust. If so, then the complexity of the East Ligurian sequences suggests that the upper part of rifted ridge-generated crust may in places possess large variations in its stratigraphy over small (<10 km2) areas.Smooth, non-rifted (fast-spreading) ridges, which have very reduced topography and lack major fault scarps, should form ophiolitic complexes deficient in breccias containing fragments of plutonic igneous rocks. Most large ophiolitic complexes do not contain plutonic rock-bearing breccias, and were therefore probably formed at smooth ridges. The apparently preferential preservation of this type of ophiolitic complex, as opposed to the rifted ridge-type crust in East Liguria, may be related to the less pervasive and less intense fracturing of smooth ridges. This resulted in greater “cohesion” and lateral continuity of smooth ridge-generated crust during later tectonic emplacement into allochthonous positions in orogenic belts.  相似文献

Based on the REE analyses of about 300 samples from 40 alkali-rich intrusive rocks, a systematic study on the features of REE composition was made, and the major factors controlling the REE distribution are discussed. According to REE, trace elements composition and Sr, Nd isotopic characteristics, the source materials and petrogenetic process of the alkali-rich intrusive rocks were studied. The petrogenetic models of Zijinshan, Sairna, Nianzishan and Shanhaiguan alkali-rich intrusive rocks were calculated using multisequence fractional crystallization and assimilation fractional crystallization models. The Pb isotopic compositions and U and Pb concentrations of the lava series (alkali basalt to comendite) and of their plutonic xenoliths (gabbro to alkaline granite) of Ascension Island are reported. The data are used to evaluate the source of the xenoliths which formed two differentiation suites: the acidic and intermediate xenoliths together with most of the lavas on the one hand, and the gabbroic xenoliths and a basaltic tuff on the other hand. The Pb isotopic compositions imply a mantle origin for the source magmas of the xenoliths and confirm the possibility of generating granitic rocks in an oceanic environment by fractional crystallization of a mantle-derived magma whose geochemical and isotopic characteristics are comparable to the source magmas of oceanic island basalts.  相似文献

An analysis of the chemical characteristics of about 200 basaltic rocks of India indicate that the rocks of Pavagarh, Girnar, Rajmahal, Mundwara, Cuddapah and Panjal Trap form independent magmatic series of mixed type having entirely different chemical characteristics relative to the Deccan basalt. The tholeiitic and olivine or alkaline basalts do not seem to form independent magma types. The present study indicates that the rocks belonging to the above magma types coexist together and may represent differentiates of a single magma series.  相似文献

Summary A reconnaissance paleomagnetic study of Hispaniola shows that three igneous units in the Dominican Republic possess meaningful directions of magnetism. A Late Cretaceous tonalite, an Eocene pyroxene diorite and a Miocene andesite porphyry have been investigated. The rock material studied is fresh, and has not been affected by secondary oxidation except in the case of the andesite which is occasionally weathered and reveals some hydrothermal alteration. Alternating field and thermal demagnetization result in removal of viscous remanence in some samples, while others reveal a good stability of NRM and little change in direction. The results disclose directions of magnetization substantially different from that of the present earth's field in Hispaniola and from those obtained from contemporaneous rocks of North America. They yield paleomagnetic poles at 23.1° N, 144.9° W for the Cretaceous tonalite and at 17.4° N, 138.0° W for the Eocene diorite, the positions of which are not significantly different from each other, suggesting no change of geomagnetic field direction during the two epochs. These poles have generally similar positions to those obtained from Late Cretaceous rocks on Jamaica and Puerto Rico. The Miocene data fall into two groups, one having a direction corresponding to a pole closely coinciding with the Miocene North American pole and the other giving a paleomagnetic pole at 68.3° N, 151.9° W coinciding with the Miocene pole for Jamaica. Paleotectonic interpretation of the results suggests that like other Greater Antilles, Hispaniola has been subject to large anticlockwise rotation since Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

Geochemical data are presented for a suite of ultramafic and related rocks from the Dras ophiolitic melange of the Indus suture zone in the western Himalaya. Harzburgites from the suite have highly refractory chemistry. Lherzolites from the suite represent modified mantle material and are comparable to potential source rocks for MORB and to the lherzolites of the Bay of Islands ophiolites. Cumulus dunite, pyroxenite and gabbro units contain olivine, chromite, clinopyroxene and plagioclase as the major cumulus phases. Orthopyroxene is absent as a cumulus phase and in this respect the Dras ophiolite differs from the Marum, Betts Cove and Troodos ophiolites. However, the Dras cumulates are similar to the Vourinos and Bay of Islands cumulate sequence and are consistent with accumulation of low-pressure liquidus phases of mid-oceanic ridge-type magmas. Magmas parental to the Dras cumulate rocks contained high 100 Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) ratios of 77–79, high Ni, Cr and possibly Ca, low Ti and depleted LREE. Parent magmas were probably similar to those of normal MORB formed by two-stage (or dynamic) melting processes in the mantle. Peridotite fabrics suggest high-temperature plastic (mantle) deformation. Disruption, serpentinisation and melange formation were probably produced during emplacement in the Indus suture zone.  相似文献

This paper presents evidence for strong biochemical weathering of basaltic outcrops induced by fungal communities in a cold environment. Weathering rind formation is considered to be a consequence of the biological activity. Comparisons between in vitro experiments and in situ observations allow a characterization of fungal effects on rocks and help to define the place of these micro‐organisms in the cold environment weathering chain. It is concluded that biological weathering is chronologically the first process of weathering, probably leading to the subsequent expression of cryogenic processes. Information presented here suggests the need for reconsideration of the traditional frost‐driven morphogenetic system normally considered for subpolar areas.
