Well characterized synthetic δ-MnO2 can be used successfully for trace metal speciation studies in natural waters. Characteristics and adsorption behavior of δ-MnO2 depend on the preparation method and subsequent treatment and aging.Three different recipes were used to prepare δ-MnO2. Methods involving a redox reaction between Mn2+ and Mn7+ at neutral pH (δ-MnO2-redox), and reduction of Mn7+ at low pH (δ-MnO2-red), yielded compounds with characteristics in agreement with literature data; they also have a high adsorption capacity for Cu. A method involving oxidation of Mn2+ at high pH yielded a δ-MnO2(ox), with some variant characteristics and a lower adsorption capacity for Cu.An artificial aging process, using heat treatment at neutral pH, produced cryptomelane from δ-MnO2(ox), but not from δ-MnO2(redox) or δ-MnO2(red). Conversion of δ-MnO2(redox) to cryptomelane and loss of approximately one-half of the adsorption capacity, as a result of a natural aging process, can be avoided for at least four years if the K content is 10% in the solid, and the solid is stored at low temperature. Potassium content, and not a low pH, appears to control the conversion to cryptomelane.Adsorption capacity of δ-MnO2 for Cu appears to be related to the K and H2O content of the solid, which is structure dependent.Because of their higher adsorption capacity for Cu, δ-MnO2(redox) or δ-MnO2(red) are more suitable for trace metal studies in natural waters, than δ-MnO2(ox).  相似文献

Experiments on the sorption of dissolved Ni, Co, Mn, Fe from seawater by Mn3O4 reveal a sequence of reactions taking place: Ion exchange, hydrolysis, then autocatalytic oxidation and layer formation on the interface. The composition of the new compounds depends on the kinetics of i) sorption, and ii) interface oxidation. The highest oxidized Me ions accumulate at low sorption rates, i. e. when sorption does not inhibit interface oxidation: 60% Mn4+, 30% Ni3+ & 30% Co3+ are a representative example for that layer type. Iron is present in this layer as amorphous FeOOH·xH2O according to Mössbauer spectra. Specific for the Me sorption by Mn3O4 is the interaction of Ni & Co with Mn2+ and Mn3+ of the sorbent lattice. Mn is found in the solute phase equivalent to 16, 14% of the adsorbed Co or 17, 96% of the adsorbed Ni. These results confirm the earlier presented model on the transition metal accumulation in recent basins as taking place in distinct stages with interface autocatalysis for the Me oxidation playing the main role.  相似文献

Strong enrichments of cobalt occur in marine manganese nodules, soils, wads, and natural and synthetic minerals such as hollandite, cryptomelane, psilomelane, lithiophorite, birnessite, and δ-MnO2. Previously, it was suggested that Co3+ ions in these minerals replace either Mn3+ or substitute for Fe3+ in incipient goethite epitaxially intergrown with δ-MnO2. Neither of these interpretations is now considered to be satisfactory on account of the large discrepancy of ionic radius between octahedrally coordinated low-spin Co3+ and high-spin Mn3+ or Fe3+ in oxide structures. The close agreement between the ionic radii of Co3+ and Mn4+ suggests that some cobalt substitutes for Mn4+ ions in edge-shared [MnO6] octahedra in many manganese(IV) oxide mineral structures. It is proposed that hydrated cations, including Co2+ ions, are initially adsorbed on to the surfaces of certain Mn(IV) oxides in the vicinity of essential vacancies found in the chains or sheets of edge-shared [MnO6] octahedra. Subsequently, fixation of cobalt takes place as a result of oxidation of adsorbed Co2+ ions by Mn4+ and replacement of the displaced manganese by low-spin Co3+ ions in the [MnO6] octahedra or vacancies.  相似文献

The local structures of divalent Zn, Cu, and Pb sorbed on the phyllomanganate birnessite (Bi) have been studied by powder and polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Metal-sorbed birnessites (MeBi) were prepared at different surface coverages by equilibrating at pH 4 a Na-exchanged buserite (NaBu) suspension with the desired aqueous metal. Me/Mn atomic ratios were varied from 0.2% to 12.8% in ZnBi and 0.1 to 5.8% in PbBi. The ratio was equal to 15.6% in CuBi. All cations sorbed in interlayers on well-defined crystallographic sites, without evidence for sorption on layer edges or surface precipitation. Zn sorbed on the face of vacant layer octahedral sites (□), and shared three layer oxygens (Olayer) with three-layer Mn atoms (Mnlayer), thereby forming a tridentate corner-sharing (TC) interlayer complex (Zn-3Olayer-□-3Mnlayer). TCZn complexes replace interlayer Mn2+ (Mninter2+) and protons. TCZn and TCMninter3+ together balance the layer charge deficit originating from Mnlayer4+ vacancies, which amounts to 0.67 charge per total Mn according to the structural formula of hexagonal birnessite (HBi) at pH 4. At low surface coverage, zinc is tetrahedrally coordinated to three Olayer and one water molecule ([IV]TC complex: (H2O)-[IV]Zn-3Olayer). At high loading, zinc is predominantly octahedrally coordinated to three Olayer and to three interlayer water molecules ([VI]TC complex: 3(H2O)-[VI]Zn-3Olayer), as in chalcophanite ([VI]ZnMn34+O7·3H2O). Sorbed Zn induces the translation of octahedral layers from −a/3 to +a/3, and this new stacking mode allows strong H bonds to form between the [IV]Zn complex on one side of the interlayer and oxygen atoms of the next Mn layer (Onext): Onext…(H2O)-[IV]Zn-3Olayer. Empirical bond valence calculations show that Olayer and Onext are strongly undersaturated, and that [IV]Zn provides better local charge compensation than [VI]Zn. The strong undersaturation of Olayer and Onext results not only from Mnlayer4+ vacancies, but also from Mn3+ for Mn4+ layer substitutions amounting to 0.11 charge per total Mn in HBi. As a consequence, [IV]Zn,Mnlayer3+, and Mnnext3+ form three-dimensional (3D) domains, which coexist with chalcophanite-like particles detected by electron diffraction. Cu2+ forms a Jahn-Teller distorted [VI]TC interlayer complex formed of two oxygen atoms and two water molecules in the equatorial plane, and one oxygen and one water molecule in the axial direction. Sorbed Pb2+ is not oxidized to Pb4+ and forms predominantly [VI]TC interlayer complexes. EXAFS spectroscopy is also consistent with the formation of tridentate edge-sharing ([VI]TE) interlayer complexes (Pb-3Olayer-3Mn), as in quenselite (Pb2+Mn3+O2OH). Although metal cations mainly sorb to vacant sites in birnessite, similar to Zn in chalcophanite, EXAFS spectra of MeBi systematically have a noticeably reduced amplitude. This higher short-range structural disorder of interlayer Me species primarily originates from the presence of Mnlayer3+, which is responsible for the formation of less abundant interlayer complexes, such as [IV]Zn TC in ZnBi and [VI]Pb TE in PbBi.  相似文献

The mineralogy of natural ferromanganese coatings on quartz grains and the crystal chemistry of associated trace elements Ni, Zn, Ba, and As were characterized by X-ray microfluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and EXAFS spectroscopy. Fe is speciated as ferrihydrite and Mn as vernadite. The two oxides form alternating Fe- and Mn-rich layers that are irregularly distributed and not always continuous. Unlike naturally abundant Fe-vernadite, in which Fe and Mn are mixed at the nanoscale, the ferrihydrite and vernadite are physically segregated and the trace elements clearly partitioned at the microscopic scale. Vernadite consists of two populations of interstratified one-water layer (7 Å phyllomanganate) and two-water layer (10 Å phyllomanganate) crystallites. In one population, 7 Å layers dominate, and in the other 10 Å layers dominate. The three trace metals Ni, Zn, and Ba are associated with vernadite and the metalloid As with ferrihydrite. In vernadite, nickel is both substituted isomorphically for Mn in the manganese layer and sorbed at vacant Mn layer sites in the interlayer. The partitioning of Ni is pH-dependent, with a strong preference for the first site at circumneutral pH and for the second at acidic pH. Thus, the site occupancy of Ni in vernadite may be an indicator of marine vs. continental origin, and in the latter, of the acidity of streams, lakes, or soil pore waters in which the vernadite formed. Zinc is sorbed only in the interlayer at vacant Mn layer sites. It is fully tetrahedral at a Zn/Mn molar ratio of 0.0138, and partly octahedral at a Zn/Mn ratio of 0.1036 consistent with experimental studies showing that the VIZn/IVZn ratio increases with Zn loading. Barium is sorbed in a slightly offset position above empty tetrahedral cavities in the interlayer. Arsenic tetrahedra are retained at the ferrihydrite surface by a bidentate-binuclear attachment to two adjacent iron octahedra, as commonly observed. Trace elements in ferromanganese precipitates are partitioned at a few, well-defined, crystallographic sites that have some elemental specificity, and thus selectivity. The relative diversity of sorption sites contrasts with the simplicity of the layer structure of vernadite, in which charge deficit arises only from Mn4+ vacancies (i.e., no Mn3+ for Mn4+ substitution). Therefore, sorption mechanisms primarily depend on physical and chemical properties of the sorbate and competition with other ions in solution, such as protons at low pH for Ni sorption.  相似文献

The Ba2+ ion adsorption isotherms on β-MnO2 were of the Langmuir type. The endothermic heat of adsorption (40 kJ mol?1) is ascribed to entropy contributions associated with the Na+Ba2+ ion-exchange mechanism. The Ba2+ ion adsorption density was higher at pH 10 than that at pH 7, due to the more negative surface charge at the higher pH. Ba2+ ions were found to reverse the sign of the ζ potential of the MnO2 particles.More oleate was adsorbed by β-MnO2 in the presence of Ba2+ ions than in their absence. The oleate adsorption isotherms on Ba2+-activated MnO2 were of the Freundlich type and indicated an exothermic process. Hallimond flotation recovery of Ba2+-activated MnO2 was higher at pH 10 than at pH 7, although less oleate was adsorbed at the higher pH. At pH 7, Mn2+-activation led to higher recoveries than Ba2+-activation. It seems that the attraction between the surface and the activator plays an important rôle in determining the flotation recovery.  相似文献

We studied zinc and sulfur isotopes and the chemical composition of sphalerite samples from Picos de Europa (Aliva mine) and sphalerite and hydrozincite samples from La Florida mine, two carbonate-hosted Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits located in northern Spain; despite being close, they are hosted in carbonatic rocks of different ages, Lower Carboniferous and Lower Cretaceous, respectively. The two generations of sphalerite at Picos de Europa show different δ66Zn values (stage 1 sphalerite +0.24 per mil and stage 2 sphalerite from ?0.75 to +0.08 per mil). Both generations also differ in the sulfur isotope composition (stage 1 has δ34S?=?+6.6 and stage 2 has δ34S?=??0.9 to +2.9 per mil) and the chemical composition (stage 1 sphalerite, compared to stage 2 sphalerite, is significantly enriched in Pb, As, Mn, Sb, slightly enriched in Ag, Ni, and Cu and depleted in Co, Ga, Tl, Te, Ge, and Sn). We suggest that Zn isotope fractionation was controlled predominantly by pH and T changes. High Zn isotope values reflect rapid precipitation of sphalerite from higher-temperature acidic fluids that carried Zn mostly as chloride species after interaction with carbonate rocks while lower Zn isotope values most likely resulted from a longer precipitation process from fluid at higher pH and decreasing T that carried dominantly Zn sulfide species. At La Florida, sphalerite samples show light 66Zn-depleted signatures with δ66Zn values from ?0.80 to ?0.01 per mil (mostly between ?0.80 and ?0.24 per mil) and δ34S values from +10.7 to +15.7 per mil without any relationship between the δ66Zn and δ34S values. Here, the variation in Zn isotope values is interpreted as related to mixing of fluids from two reservoirs. The Zn was carried by a single deep-seated and higher T (~250–320 °C) fluid, and precipitation took place after mixing with a connate S-rich fluid in a system with mH2S?>?mZn2+ as a result of change in pH, T, and Zn predominant species. The light δ66Zn accompanied by heavy δ34S values resulted from fractionation of Zn aqueous sulfides at near-neutral pH and decreasing T. Hydrozincite samples show much heavier δ66Zn values (+0.21 to +0.33 per mil), consistent with fractionation during supergene processes.  相似文献

Sorption of metals on humic acid   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The sorption on humic acid (HA) of metals from an aqueous solution containing Hg(II). Fe(III), Pb, Cu, Al, Ni, Cr(III), Cd, Zn, Co and Mn, was investigated with special emphasis on effects of pH, metal concentration and HA concentration. The sorption efficiency tended to increase with rise in pH, decrease in metal concentration and increase in HA concentration of the equilibrating solution. At pH 2.4. the order of sorption was: Hg? Fe? Pb? CuAl ? Ni ? CrZnCdCoMn. At pH 3.7. the order was: Hg and Fe were always most readily removed, while Co and Mn were sorbed least readily. There were indications of competition for active sites (CO2H and phenolic OH groups) on the HA between the different metals. We were unable to find correlations between the affinities of the eleven metals to sorb on HA and their atomic weights, atomic numbers, valencies, and crystal and hydrated ionic radii. The sorption of the eleven metals on the HA could be described by the equation Y = 100[1 + exp ? (A + BX)], where Y = % metal removed by HA; X = mgHA; and A and B are empirical constants.  相似文献

Biofilm-embedded Mn oxides exert important controls on trace metal cycling in aquatic and soil environments. The speciation and mobility of Zn in particular has been linked to Mn oxides found in streams, wetlands, soils, and aquifers. We investigated the mechanisms of Zn sorption to a biogenic Mn oxide within a biofilm produced by model soil and freshwater MnII-oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas putida. The biogenic Mn oxide is a c-disordered birnessite with hexagonal layer symmetry. Zinc adsorption isotherm and Zn and Mn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy experiments were conducted at pH 6.9 to characterize Zn sorption to this biogenic Mn oxide, and to determine whether the bioorganic components of the biofilm affect metal sorption properties. The EXAFS data were analyzed by spectral fitting, principal component analysis, and linear least-squares fitting with reference spectra. Zinc speciation was found to change as Zn loading to the biosorbent [bacterial cells, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and biogenic Mn oxide] increased. At low Zn loading (0.13 ± 0.04 mol Zn kg−1 biosorbent), Zn was sorbed to crystallographically well-defined sites on the biogenic oxide layers in tetrahedral coordination to structural O atoms. The fit to the EXAFS spectrum was consistent with Zn sorption above and below the MnIV vacancy sites of the oxide layers. As Zn loading increased to 0.72 ± 0.04 mol Zn kg−1 biosorbent, Zn was also detected in octahedral coordination to these sites. Overall, our results indicate that the biofilm did not intervene in Zn sorption by the Mn-oxide because sorption to the organic material was observed only after all Mn vacancy sites were capped by Zn. The organic functional groups present in the biofilm contributed significantly to Zn removal from solution when Zn concentrations exceeded the sorption capacity of the biooxide. At the highest Zn loading studied, 1.50 ± 0.36 mol Zn kg−1 biosorbent, the proportion of total Zn sorption attributed to bioorganic material was 38 mol%. The maximum Zn loading to the biogenic oxide that we observed was 4.1 mol Zn kg−1 biogenic Mn oxide, corresponding to 0.37 ± 0.02 mol Zn mol−1 Mn. This loading is in excellent agreement with previous estimates of the content of cation vacancies in the biogenic oxide. The results of this study improve our knowledge of Zn speciation in natural systems and are consistent with those of Zn speciation in mineral soil fractions and ferromanganese nodules where the Mn oxides present are possibly biogenic.  相似文献

Thermodynamic data for all fate-determining processes are needed in order to predict the fate and transport of metals in natural systems. The surface complexation properties of a synthetic MnO2, δ-MnO2, have accordingly been investigated using glass electrode potentiometry. Experimental data were interpreted according to the surface complexation model in conjunction with the diffuse double layer model of the solid/solution interface. Adsorption constants were determined using the non-linear optimisation program FITEQL. Surface complexation parameters determined in this way were validated against results obtained from the literature. Best fits of alkalimetric titration data were obtained with a 2-site, 3 surface-species model of the δ-MnO2 surface. Site concentrations of 2.23×10−3 mol g−1 and 7.66×10−4 mol g−1 were obtained. Corresponding logarithms of formation constants for the postulated surface species are −1.27 (≡XO), −5.99 (≡YO) and 3.52 (≡YOH2+) at I=0.1 M. The surface speciation of δ-MnO2 is dominated by ≡XO over the pH range investigated. Metal adsorption was modelled with surface species of the type ≡XOM+, ≡XOMOH, ≡YOM+, ≡YOMOH (M=Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb) and ≡XOM2OH2+ (M=Pb). For Cu, Ni and Zn, titration data could be modelled with ≡XOM+, ≡XOMOH, ≡YOM+ and ≡YOMOH, whereas for Cd, ≡XOM+ and ≡YOM+ were sufficient. Lead data were best modelled by assuming the dinuclear species ≡XOM2OH2+ to be the only surface species to form. Adsorption constants determined for Ni, Cu and Zn follow the Irving-Williams sequence. The model suggests an adsorption order of (Pb, Cu) > (Ni, Zn) > Cd. The discrepancy between model predictions and published adsorption results is similar to the variability observed in experimental results from different laboratories.  相似文献

Many mining-impacted streams in western Montana with pH near or above neutrality display large (up to 500%) diel cycles in dissolved Zn concentrations. The streams in question typically contain boulders coated with a thin biofilm, as well as black mineral crusts composed of hydrous Mn–Zn oxides. Laboratory mesocosm experiments simulating diel behavior in High Ore Creek (one of the Montana streams with particularly high Zn concentrations) show that the Zn cycles are not caused by 24-h changes in streamflow or hyporheic exchange, but rather to reversible in-stream processes that are driven by the solar cycle and its attendant influence on pH and water temperature (T). Laboratory experiments using natural Mn–Zn precipitates from the creek show that the mobilities of Zn and Mn increase nearly an order of magnitude for each unit decrease in pH, and decrease 2.4-fold for an increase in T from 5 to 20 °C. The response of dissolved metal concentration to small changes in either pH or T was rapid and reversible, and dissolved Zn concentrations were roughly an order of magnitude higher than Mn. These observations are best explained by sorption of Zn2+ and Mn2+ onto the secondary Mn–Zn oxide surfaces. From the T-dependence of residual metal concentrations in solution, approximate adsorption enthalpies of +50 kJ/mol (Zn) and +46 kJ/mol (Mn) were obtained, which are within the range of enthalpy values reported in the literature for sorption of divalent metal cations onto hydrous metal oxides. Using the derived pH- and T-dependencies from the experiments, good agreement is shown between predicted and observed diel Zn cycles for several historical data sets collected from High Ore Creek.  相似文献

The sorption of silver by poorly crystallized manganese oxides was studied using synthesized samples of three members of the manganous manganite (birnessite) group, of different chemical composition and crystallinity, and a poorly organized γ-MnO2. All four oxides sorbed significant quantities of silver. The manganous manganites showed the greatest sorption (up to 0.5 moles silver/mole MnOx at pH 7) while the γ-MnO2 showed the least (0.3 moles silver/ mole MnOx at pH 7). Sorption of silver was adequately described by the Langmuir equation over a considerable concentration range. The relationship failed at low pH values and high equilibrium silver concentrations. The sorption capacity showed a direct relationship with pH. However, the rate of increase of sorption capacity decreased at the higher pH values.Silver sorption maxima. were not directly related to surface area but appeared to vary with the amount of occluded sodium and potassium present in the manganese oxide. The important processes involved in the uptake of silver by the four poorly crystallized manganese oxides ara considered to be surface exchange for manganese, potassium and sodium as well as exchange for structural manganese, potassium and sodium.  相似文献

It has long been recognized that the Pu4+ ion can be readily adsorbed on solid surfaces, but it has been assumed that the generally more abundant Pu(V)O2+ ion should have little affinity for surfaces. Our results indicate that Pu(V)O2+ can be adsorbed from dilute solutions and seawater on goethite, aragonite, calcite, and δ-MnO2. Adsorption on δ-MnO2 is severely depressed in seawater, probably as a result of site competition with seawater cations. The sorption behavior of PuO2+ is influenced by oxidation-reduction reactions occurring on the mineral surfaces. Adsorption on δ-MnO2 results in oxidation of adsorbed Pu(IV) and Pu(V) to Pu(VI). However, adsorption on goethite results in a reaction in which Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) are formed on the mineral surface. The Pu(VI) is slowly reduced to Pu(IV), leaving Pu(IV) as the dominant surface Pu species. This reaction can be photochemically catalyzed. PuO2+ adsorbed on carbonate minerals behaves similarly to Np(V)O2+ and undergoes little change in oxidation state after adsorption.  相似文献

Hexagonal birnessite (δ-MnO2) is a close analogue to the dominant phase in hydrogenetic marine ferromanganese crusts and nodules. These deposits contain ∼0.25 wt.% Cu which is believed to be scavenged from the overlying water column where Cu concentrations are near 0.1 μg/L. Here, we measured the sorption of Cu on δ-MnO2 as a function of pH and surface loading. We characterized the nature of the Cu sorption complex at pH 4 and 8 using EXAFS spectroscopy and find that, at pH 4, Cu sorbs to birnessite by inner-sphere complexation on the {0 0 1} surface at sites above Mn vacancies to give a three to fourfold coordinated complex with 6 Mn neighbors at ∼3.4 Å. At pH 8, however, we find that some Cu has become structurally incorporated into the MnO2 layer by occupying the vacancy sites to give 6 Mn neighbors at ∼2.91 Å. Density functional calculations on and clusters predict a threefold coordinated surface complex and show that the change from surface complexation to structural incorporation is a response to protonation of oxygens surrounding the vacancy site. Consequently, we propose that the transformation between sorption via surface complex and vacancy site occupancy should be reversible. By fitting the Cu sorption as a function of surface loading and pH to the formation of the observed and predicted surface complex, we developed a surface complexation model (in the basic Stern approximation) for the sorption of Cu onto birnessite. Using this model, we demonstrate that the concentration of inorganic Cu in the deep ocean should be several orders of magnitude lower than the observed total dissolved Cu. We propose that the observed total dissolved Cu concentration in the oceans reflects solubilization of Cu by microbially generated ligands.  相似文献

Minerals constitute a primary ecosystem control on organic C decomposition in soils, and therefore on greenhouse gas fluxes to the atmosphere. Secondary minerals, in particular, Fe and Al (oxyhydr)oxides—collectively referred to as “oxides” hereafter—are prominent protectors of organic C against microbial decomposition through sorption and complexation reactions. However, the impacts of Mn oxides on organic C retention and lability in soils are poorly understood. Here we show that hydrous Mn oxide (HMO), a poorly crystalline δ-MnO2, has a greater maximum sorption capacity for dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from a deciduous forest composite Oi, Oe, and Oa horizon leachate (“O horizon leachate” hereafter) than does goethite under acidic (pH 5) conditions. Nonetheless, goethite has a stronger sorption capacity for DOM at low initial C:(Mn or Fe) molar ratios compared to HMO, probably due to ligand exchange with carboxylate groups as revealed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy–near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy coupled with Mn mass balance calculations reveal that DOM sorption onto HMO induces partial Mn reductive dissolution and Mn reduction of the residual HMO. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further shows increasing Mn(II) concentrations are correlated with increasing oxidized C (C=O) content (r = 0.78, P < 0.0006) on the DOM–HMO complexes. We posit that DOM is the more probable reductant of HMO, as Mn(II)-induced HMO dissolution does not alter the Mn speciation of the residual HMO at pH 5. At a lower C loading (2 × 102 μg C m?2), DOM desorption—assessed by 0.1 M NaH2PO4 extraction—is lower for HMO than for goethite, whereas the extent of desorption is the same at a higher C loading (4 × 102 μg C m?2). No significant differences are observed in the impacts of HMO and goethite on the biodegradability of the DOM remaining in solution after DOM sorption reaches steady state. Overall, HMO shows a relatively strong capacity to sorb DOM and resist phosphate-induced desorption, but DOM–HMO complexes may be more vulnerable to reductive dissolution than DOM–goethite complexes.  相似文献

This study examines the removal of dissolved metals during the oxidation and neutralization of five acid mine drainage (AMD) waters from La Zarza, Lomero, Esperanza, Corta Atalaya and Poderosa mines (Iberian Pyrite Belt, Huelva, Spain). These waters were selected to cover the spectrum of pH (2.2–3.5) and chemical composition (e.g., 319–2,103 mg/L Fe; 2.85–33.3 g/L SO4=) of the IPB mine waters. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory to simulate the geochemical evolution previously recognized in the field. This evolution includes two stages: (1) oxidation of dissolved Fe(II) followed by hydrolysis and precipitation of Fe(III), and (2) progressive pH increase during mixing with fresh waters. Fe(III) precipitates at pH < 3.5 (stages 1 and 2) in the form of schwertmannite, whereas Al precipitates during stage 2 at pH 5.0 in the form of several hydroxysulphates of variable composition (hydrobasaluminite, basaluminite, aluminite). During these stages, trace elements are totally or partially sorbed and/or coprecipitated at different rates depending basically on pH, as well as on the activity of the SO4= anion (which determines the speciation of metals). The general trend for the metals which are chiefly present as aqueous free cations (Pb2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+) is a progressive sorption at increasing pH. On the other hand, As and V (mainly present as anionic species) are completely scavenged during the oxidation stage at pH < 3.5. In waters with high activities (> 10−1) of the SO 4= ion, some elements like Al, Zn, Cd, Pb and U can also form anionic bisulphate complexes and be significantly sorbed at pH < 5. The removal rates at pH 7.0 range from around 100% for As, V, Cu and U, and 60–80% for Pb, to less than 20% for Zn, Co, Ni and Mn. These processes of metal removal represent a significant mechanism of natural attenuation in the IPB.  相似文献

Arsenic(V), as the arsenate (AsO4 3?) ion and its conjugate acids, has a strong affinity on Fe, Mn, and Al (oxyhydr)oxides and clay minerals. Removal of arsenate from aqueous solution by poorly crystalline ferrihydrite (hydrous ferric oxide) via a combination of macroscopic (equilibria and kinetics of sorption) and X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies was investigated. The removal of arsenate significantly decreased with increasing pH and sorption maxima of approximately 1.994 mmol/g (0.192 molAs/molFe) were achieved at pH 2.0. The Langmuir isotherm is most appropriate for arsenate sorption over the wide range of pH, indicating that arsenate sorption preferentially takes place at relatively homogenous and monolayer sites rather than heterogeneous and multilayer surfaces. The kinetic study demonstrated that arsenate sorption onto 2-line ferrihydrite is considerably fast, and sorption equilibrium was achieved within the reaction time of 2 h. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy indicates no change in oxidation state of arsenate following interaction with the ferrihydrite surfaces. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy supports the efficient removal of arsenate by the 2-line ferrihydrite through the formation of highly stable inner-sphere surface complexes, such as bidentate binuclear corner-sharing (2C) and bidentate mononuclear edge-sharing (2E) complexes.  相似文献

Chemical and mineralogical analyses of a well-controlled suite of ferromanganese encrustations from the Line Islands Archipelago (Central Pacific) suggest that they represent purely hydrogenous deposits—i.e. they have formed through the slow accumulation of trace metal-enriched oxides directly from the water-column. Mineralogically they consist predominantly of δMnO2 and amorphous FeOOHxH2O. Compositionally, they are similar to δMnO2 nodules from adjoining basinal areas but are enriched in both Mn (mean = 20.4%, max = 29.3%) and Co (mean = 0.55%, max = 1.57%). δMnO2 is the most important trace metal bearing phase; strong associations are noted between it and Co, Mo, Ni, Zn, and Cd, whilst only Be is associated specifically with FeOOH. V, Sr and Pb are partitioned between the authigenic oxide phases, whilst Ti most probably occurs as TiO2xH2O. Cu is contained in both aluminosilicate contaminant phases and Fe oxide phases. These relations are considered to reflect the differing scavenging behaviour of Mn and Fe oxides in the water column.Crusts from ~1–2 km are enriched in Mn and the Mn-related elements and exhibit higher MnFe ratios than deeper crusts, which are compositionally constant. The higher MnFe ratios may result from a supply of Mn from continental borderland sediments at these depths, which is transported horizontally by advective-diffusive processes. Since manganophile elements are enriched relative to Mn in the 1–2 km crusts, it is considered that the supply of Mn is scavenged by existing oxides, is oxidised and effectively occludes them. A higher proportion of oxide particles thus exhibit Mn oxide scavenging properties in the 1–2 km depth zone. The increased vertical flux of Mn resulting from the supply at ~1–2 km is not reflected by higher MnFe ratios in deeper crusts, so that the vertical flux of oxides is not simply related to the standing crop. The MnFe ratios of the crusts thus reflect the composition of suspended oxides at similar depths.  相似文献

Two hundred and forty water samples (in four seasons) and seventeen sediment samples have been analyzed to monitor the natural and anthropogenic influences on the water and sediment chemistry of the Dal Lake, Kashmir Himalaya. The scatter diagrams [(Ca+Mg)/total cations (TZ+), (Ca+Mg)/HCO3, (Ca+Mg)/(HCO3+SO4), (Na+K)/TZ+; (Ca+Mg)/(Na+K)] and the geological map of the study area suggest predominance of carbonate and silicate weathering. Lower pH and high total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity and values in the Gagribal basin and in some patches of other basins reflect anthropogenic inputs in the form of sewage from surrounding population, houseboats, hotels, etc. The Dal Lake is characterized by high chemical index of alteration (CIA: 87–95), reflecting extreme weathering of the catchment area. Relative to the average carbonates, the lakebed sediments are enriched in Al, Ti, Zn, Cu and Co and depleted in Ni and Mn. Compared to the post-Archean Shale the sediments have higher Al, Zn and Cu contents and lower Ni and Co. There are distinct positive anomalies of Al, Mn, Zn and Cu and negative anomalies of Ni and Pb with respect to the upper continental crust. Geoaccumulation index (I geo) and the US Environmental Protection Agency sediment quality standards indicate that the Gagribal basin and some patches of the Nagin basin are polluted with respect to Zn, Cu and Pb. These data suggest that the Dal Lake is characterized by differential natural and anthropogenic influences.  相似文献

Manganese oxides from deposits in west-central Arkansas were analyzed by X-ray diffraction for mineralogy and by atomic absorption spectroscopy for Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, V, Al, Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba. We report on 42 samples from 25 sites with more than 25 wt.% Mn and less than 7 wt.% Fe. Most samples were mixtures of two or more of the following minerals, many with concentric deposition: cryptomelane, lithiophorite, psilomelane and pyrolusite. In the purer samples of single minerals, lithiophorite contained the higher concentrations of total base metals (Co + Cu + Ni + Zn) than other minerals. In atom % of Mn these concentrations were: 9.51% in lithiophorite; 0.432% in psilomelane; and 0.275% in cryptomelane. The relative concentration of base metals in the pure minerals, proceeding from highest to lowest concentration, were: lithiophorite (Co = Cu > Ni > Zn); psilomelane (Co > Cu > Zn > Ni) and cryptomelane (Zn > Co = Cu > Ni).The concentration of Li correlates with the metals Al, Co, Cu, Ni and Zn, in the mineral samples containing measurable Li. Correlation coefficients (?) for Li with the various metals and sum of the base metals were: Al (? = 0.976); Co (? = 0.44); Ni (? = 0.954); Cu (? = 0.918); Zn (? = 0.875); and (Co + Cu + Ni + Zn) (? = 0.979). Li is believed to be a measure of lithiophorite. Correlation was found between Al content and base metal contents for all samples: Co (? = 0.354); Ni (? = 0.749); Cu (? = 0.808); Zn (? = 0.632); and (Co + Cu + Ni + Zn) (? = 0.884). The Al correlation extended to published values for these and the minerals hollandite and todorokite, except for Zn. Zn correlated with K in published analyses and in the eastern half of the study area where cryptomelane predominated.A mechanism is proposed to explain the enhancement by Al of base metal incorporation into manganese oxide minerals. The mechanism involves the isomorphous substitution of Al3+ for Mn4+ with charge neutralization by bivalent base metal ions.  相似文献
