Apparent radius, visual brightness, effective temperature and absolute radius for 416 B5 v-F5 v stars of the catalogue of the Geneva Observatory (Rufener, 1976) have been determined.Twenty-eight stars, anomalous in log versus (m v)0 diagrams, have been singled out. A good correlation for seven stars, in common with the list of Hanbury Brownet al. (1974), has been found. Similar parameters determined for 279 B5 v-F5 v stars of two preceding papers (Fracassiniet al., 1973, 1975) have allowed us to determine the averaged diagrams logq v/q, logR/R and logT e versus (B-V)0 for 695 B5 v-F5 v stars.Moreover, in the present paper a good correlation logq v/q versus logR/R and careful relation M v=–7.40logR/R +3.31 for B5 v-F5 v stars have been determined. Plain correlations between logR/R and blanketing parameterm 2 for some spectral types seem to point out that there arereal differences in the absolute radii of stars of thesame spectral type, in agreement with recent researches on the HR diagram (Houck and Fesen, 1978).Systematic differences between double (spectroscopic and visual) and single stars are found. In particular, the averaged relation m 2 versus logR/R shows that A2 v-F5 v double stars may have a higher metallicity indexm 2 and smaller absolute radii than single stars. Finally, the diagram logv sini versus logR/R confirms some properties of binary systems found by other researchers (Huang, 1966; Plavec, 1970; Levato, 1974; Kitamura and Kondo, 1978).Thesis for the degree in Applied Physics.  相似文献

Lockwood, Stamper, and Wild (1999) argued that the average strength of the magnetic field of the Sun has doubled in the last 100 years. They used an analysis of the geomagnetic index aa. We calculated the area of polar zones of the Sun, A pz, occupied by unipolar magnetic field on H synoptic magnetic charts, following Makarov (1994), from 1878 to 2000. We found a gradual decrease of the annual minimum latitude of the high-latitude zone boundaries, 2m, of the global magnetic field of the Sun at the minimum of activity from 53° in 1878 down to 38° in 1996, yielding an average decrease of 1.2° per cycle. Consequently the area of polar zones A pz of the Sun, occupied by unipolar magnetic field at the minimum activity, has risen by a factor of 2 during 1878–1996. This means that the behavior of the index aa and consequently the magnetic flux from the Sun may be explained by an increase of the area of polar caps with roughly the same value of the magnetic field in this period. The area of the unipolar magnetic field at the poles (A pz) may be used as a new index of magnetic activity of the Sun. We compared A pz with the aa, the Wolf number W and A* -index (Makarov and Tlatov, 2000). Correlations based on `11-year' averages are discussed. A temperature difference of about 1° between the Maunder Minimum and the present time was deduced. We have found that the highest latitude of the polar zone boundaries of the large-scale magnetic field during very low solar activity reaches about 60°, cf., the Maunder Minimum. It is supposed that the 2m-latitude coincides with the latitude where r=0, with (r,) being the angular frequency of the solar rotation. The causes of the waxing and waning of the Sun's activity in conditions like Maunder Minimum are discussed.  相似文献

Some peculiarities in the behaviour of a model self-gravitating system described by hydrodynamical equations and isothermal equation of state connected with the presence of thermodynamical fluctuations in real systems were investigated in numerical experiment. The values of density and velocity , , respectively, were computed by numerical code perturbed on each time-step and in each computational cell by random values , for modeling such fluctuations. Perturbed values i = i + i ,v i = i + v i were used to initiate the next step of computations. This procedure is equivalent to an introduction into original hydrodynamical equations of Langevin sources which are random functions. It is shown that these small fluctuations (= v =0,2 =v 2 = 10–8) grow many times in marginally-stable state.  相似文献

The concept of velocity correlation functions is introduced and applied to the calculation of cosmic ray spatial diffusion coefficients. It is assumed that the pitch angle scattering coefficient is already known from some other theory, and is reasonably well-behaved. Previous results for the coefficient for diffusion parallel to the mean field are recovered when the velocity-changing mechanism is artificially restricted to pitch angle scattering. The velocity correlation method is then applied to the more general case where there are fluctuations in the local mean field. It is found that the parallel diffusion coefficient is reduced in proportion to the amplitude of the field fluctuations, and that the ratio of the perpendicular to parallel diffusion coefficients cannot be greater than B x 2 /B 0 2 . It is shown in the appendix that the Liouville form of the scattering equation implies that the Fokker-Planck coefficients 2/t=2D and /t=D /, and that all higher-order coefficients are identically zero.  相似文献

We develop an automatic, computer controlled procedure to select and to analyze the Network Bright Points (NBPs) on solar images. These have been obtained at the Sac Peak Vacuum Tower Telescope by means of the Universal Birefringent Filter and Zeiss H filters, tuned, respectively, along the profiles of the H, Mg-b1, Na-D2, and H lines.A structure is identified as an NBP if at the wavelength H- 1.5 A its maximum intensity is greater than I + 3 and its area is greater than 1.5 arc sec2 at I + 1.5, where I is the mean value and the standard deviation of the intensity distribution on the image. Each detected NBP is then searched and confirmed in all the remaining 31 images at different wavelengths.For each NBP several parameters are measured (position, area, mean and maximum contrast, Dopplergram velocity, compactness, and so on) and some identification constraints are applied.The statistical analysis of the various parameter distributions, for NBPs present within an active region and its surroundings, shows that two types of NBPs can be identified according to the value of their mean contrast C min the H- 1.5 Å image (C m 0.1 type I, C m> 0.1 type II). The type I NBPs (all occurring on the boundaries of the supergranular network) appear to be much more frequent (180/26) than the type II ones.The size A of type I NBPs is less than 1.0 arc sec for H/H wings but of the order of 1.2 arc sec for Na-D2 and Mg-bl. The mean contrast C m is around the value of 10% along the Na-D2 and Mg-bl profiles and of 20% along the H/H wings.The C m - A scatter diagrams show, for the photospheric radiation (h < 100 km), a narrow range of variability for C min correspondence with a wide range for A. For radiation orginated at higher levels (h > 200 km), the C m- A scatter diagrams seem to indicate, even if with a large variance, that the highest C m's tend to correspond to the highest A values.The mean Doppler shift is close to zero for Na-D2 and Mg-bl lines but negative (downward motion) for H and H lines.The type II NBPs tends to be preferentially located in the neighbourhood of small, compact sunspots and their detectability is almost constant through all the 4 studied line profiles. No conclusions can be derived on the mean size, contrast and Doppler shift values because their distributions are too dispersed. The only positive information is that its C m- A scatter diagram, in H and H wings, indicates a wide range of variability for C m in correspondence with very narrow range of variability for A.  相似文献

The observations of the BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory show that the spatial distribution of -ray burst sources is isotropic but radially non-uniform. As is well known, the spectral features, the time histories and the X-ray tails present in some -ray bursts suggest that they may arise from galactic neutron stars. But, low velocity neutron stars born in the Galactic disk would concentrate toward the galactic plane and center, and could not fit the BATSE results. However, the high velocity neutron stars with velocity 1000 km s–1 may escape from the Galactic gravitational field and form a nearly isotropic distribution. Here we calculate the three statistical values of V/V max, sin2 b and cos as functions of the intensitiesC max/C min and find that they could be fitted by the distribution of high velocity neutron stars under the assumption that the high velocity neutron stars should turn on as -ray burst sources only after some time (perhaps after they have ceased to be radio pulsars). Our calculation shows that the statistical value of cos is more sensitive than sin2 b to the angular distribution of high velocity neutron stars, i.e. the deviation of cos from 0 is more readily detected than the deviation of sin2 b from 1/3, so we expect that with the increasing sensitivity of instrument and the more exact value of cos , it is possible to determine whether this high velocity neutron star model is correct. The ion composition instrument (ICI) on ISEE-3 has observed the isotopes of helium of mass 3 and 4 in the solar wind almost continuously between August 1978 and July 1982. This period included the increase towards the maximum of solar activity cycle 21, the maximum period, and the beginning of the descent towards solar minimum. Observations were made when the solar wind speed was between 300 and 620 km s–1. For part of the period evidence for regular interplanetary magnetic sector structure was clear and a number of3He flares occurred during this time.The long-term average4He++/3He++ flux ratio R, was 2050 ± 200, a agreement with a previously reported result obtained using part of this data set, and in very good agreement with the previous measurements made over much shorter periods of time with the foil technique. The R values for 6-month intervals show statistically significant differences. The highest of these values is 2300 and coincides with the solar maximum of cycle 21 indicating that at solar maximum there may be changes in the character and rate of occurrence of short-term variations in R. We also find that R drops under conditions of low proton flux in the solar wind, and that it is high when solar wind speeds are lowest.At solar wind speeds above 400 km s–1 R is nearby constant at about 2000; at lower speeds it is larger and more variable, in agreement with the idea that the sources of high and low speed wind are different. At times of sector boundary current sheet crossings, identified with coronal streamers, there is a characteristic rise in the value of R indicating an encounter with a plasma with reduced3He++ abundance. Autocorrelations have been computed for4He++ and3He++ and indicate correlation times of about 14 and 20 hr, respectively. Periods of duration of about one day whenR is less than 1000 tend to coincide with the observation of compound streams.The possibility of detectable increases in3He++ flux in plasma which left the Sun at the time of3He flares has been investigated, but no significant increase was seen.  相似文献

In view of the striking similarities between Quasi-Stellar Objects on the one hand and the nuclei of N galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies and normal galaxies on the other, the possibility that QSOs might belong to an early phase in the evolutionary sequence of galaxies is explored. In this connection, considering the fact that nebulosities have been detected around five QSOs, the implications of the hypothesis that a QSO consists of a bright central object embedded in an extended nebulosity have been examined. In particular, the ratio a between the intensity of the bright central object and that of the surrounding nebulosity in the visual band of wavelengths has been calculated by the colour-given method for a sample of 81 QSOs with emission redshiftz0.76. This ratio a has been used to calculate the apparent visual magnitudem(V) and the absolute visual magnitudeM(V) of the bright central object (Nu) as well as that of the surounding nebulosity (Neb) of the QSOs in the sample and a criterion has been proposed as to the detectability of the surrounding nebulosities. Similar calculations have been made for N galaxies, Seyfert galaxies and normal galaxies. It is found that the values of log a, M(V) Nu and M(V) Neb for the four classes of extragalactic objects show a definite trend and suggest an evolutionary sequence: QSOsN galaxiesSeyfert galaxiesnormal galaxies.  相似文献

Low frequency or Alfvén waves in streaming plasmas can become unstable when the square of the Alfvén velocity is smaller than the mean square of the bulk motion in a co-moving reference frame, (u u )2, whereu stands for the bulk velocity of each species and u is the average bulk velocity of the plasma as a whole. For these new Alfvén instabilities the streaming effects can be enhanced by a suitable pressure anisotropy. Perpendicular pressure effects are stabilizing, parallel pressure effects are destabilizing, as in the usual firehose instability. The observed velocity differences between helium and the main (hydrogen) flow in the solar wind plasma are such that the Alfvén waves are getting close to marginal instability. These new Alfvén instabilities limit the velocity differences between helium and hydrogen and thus provide a possible mechanism for accelerating the helium particles up to the order of the main flow velocity.  相似文献

A statistical analysis of solar particle events, observed by the GSFC-UNH charged particle detector on board Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 from March 1972 to December 1974 (from 1 to 5 AU for each spacecraft), is carried out with the goal of experimentally determining the statistical average interplanetary propagation conditions from 3 to 30 MeV. A numerical propagation model is developed that includes diffusion with a diffusion coefficient of the form k r =k o r , convection, adiabatic deceleration, and a variable coronal injection profile. The statistical analysis is carried out by individually analyzing each of five parameters (t max, (tmax), t 5, ) that are uniquely defined in a solar particle event. Each of the five parameter data sets were analyzed in terms of both a spacecraft-solar flare connection longitude 50°, and a numerical model that employed a variable exponential decaying coronal injection profile.The five individual parameter analyses are combined with the results that the statistical average radial interplanetary diffusion coefficient from 1 to 5 AU is given by k r = (1.2 ± 0.4) × 1021 cm2 s-1 with = 0.0± 0.3 for 3.4 to 5.2 MeV protons and k r = (2.6 ± 0.6) × 1021 cm2 s-1 with () = 0.0± 0.3 for 24 to 30 MeV protons. Using the classical relationship for the radial scattering mean free path r, i.e. k r = r/3, we obtain r = 0.09 ± 0.03 AU and 0.075 ± 0.020 AU for the low and high energy data, respectively. These results show, from 1 to 5 AU and from 3 to 30 MeV, that r is both independent of radial distance and approximately independent of rigidity (for r~P , where P = rigidity, = -0.15 ± 0.20).The above diffusion coefficients are inconsistent With both the predictions of the diffusion coefficient from present theoretical transport models and with the diffusion coefficient used in modulation studies at low energies.  相似文献

The plot of the X-ray luminosity (in 0.5–4.5 KeV band and for Friedmann universe withq 0=+1) of the brightest X-ray QSO at each redshift against redshift shows that the X-ray luminosity increases more or less monotonically with redshift uptoz3. This result has been attributed to the selection effect known as the volume effect. When this selection effect is taken into account in the optical, radio and X-ray windows of the electromagnetic spectrum, a sample of the brightest X-ray QSO's is obtained which shows a small dispersion in X-ray luminosity: logL 1=46.15±0.25. The redshift-X-ray flux density plot for this sample gives slopes of both regression lines which agree, at a confidence level of 95% or greater, with the slopes expected theoretically if the redshifts of the QSO's are cosmological in nature.  相似文献

General theory of electrical conductivity of a multicomponent mixture of degenerate fermions in a magnetic fieldB, developed in the preceding article (this volume), is applied to a matter in neutron star interiors at densities 0, where 0 = 2.8×1014 g cm–3 is the standard nuclear matter density. A model of free-particle mixture ofn, p, e is used, with account for appearance of -hyperons at > c , where c 40. The electric resistivities along and acrossB, and , and the Hall resistivity H are calculated and fitted by simple analytical formulae at c and > c for the cases of normal or superfluid neutrons provided other particles are normal. Charge transport alongB is produced by electrons, due to their Coulombic collisions with other charged particles; is independent ofB and almost independent of the neutron superfluidity. Charge transport acrossB at largeB may be essentially determined by other charged particles. If c , one has = [1 + (B/B 0)2] for the normal neutrons, and for the superfluid neutrons, while H = B/B e for both cases. HereB e 109 T 8 2 G,B 01011 T 8 2 G, andT 8 is temperature in units of 108 K. Accordingly for the normal neutrons atBB 0, the transverse resistivity suffers an enhancement, 1/4 1. When 50 andB varies from 0 toBB p 1013 T 8 2 G, increases by a factor of about 103–104 and H changes sign. WhenBB p , remains constant for the superfluid neutrons, and H B 2 for the normal neutrons, while H B for any neutron state. Strong dependence of resistivity onB, T, and may affect evolution of magnetic fields in neutron star cores. In particular, the enhancement of at highB may noticeably speed up the Ohmic decay of those electric currents which are perpendicular toB.  相似文献

A model of a first generation intermediate star of 5M , with Z=0 has been considered. The model is at an advanced stage of its evolution and has a double shell burning. It burns helium in the inner shell, and hydrogen, via CNO cycle, in the outer shell. =(log/log) T and T =(log/logT) were computed allowing for the oscillations of the relative mass abundance of the reagents in nuclear reactions. Including =(log/log) T and =(log/logT) of mean molecular weight and the effect of the oscillations of abundances due to nuclear reactions, stability was studied. Contrary to the results of the static calculations, we found that instability due to the excitation mechanism provided by the high temperature sensitivity of energy generation rate propagates up to the surface. Thus the model in question was found to be unstable against radial adiabatic pulsations, in its fundamental mode.  相似文献

Theoretical distributions of pulsar dispersion measures (times sinb II) are computed for various assumed pulsar spatial distributions above (and below) the galactic plane, assuming a distribution for the ionized gas. The statistics on the twelve high-latitude pulsars lead to the conclusion that the pulsar distribution inz is at least as broad as the distribution of the ionized gas. The value derived for the local mean interstellar electron density in the galactic plane is 0.12 cm–3 and is interpreted to be due to a uniform ionized intercloud medium.Interstellar absorption of radio waves at low frequencies and cosmic X-rays at low energies are considered with regard to irregularities in the distribution of ionized gas. It is shown that if the obervations are made with a wide angle receiver the effective absorption optical deph is –2/2 where is the mean value and is the dispersion in . This relation assumes is much larger than . Analysis of recent low-frequency radio measurements from a satellite-borne receiver, however, leads to the conclusion that effects of irregulatirities are large.  相似文献

High resolution surveys of the galactic centre suggest the existence of an extended nonthermal source (Bulge) with an intensity much larger than the total background radiation in that direction. In this paper, we have first evaluated the physical conditions existing in this restricted region of space from an analysis of the radio spectrum and shown that if the distribution of matter, magnetic fieldB(r) and cosmic ray densityk(r) in the plane of the Galaxy is of gaussian type then at the centreB (0)=25–30 G andk(0)=25–35 times that in the near interstellar space. It is also found that most of the absorption in the Sagittarius A spectrum at low frequencies takes place in the Bulge and one requires a small additional absorption to take place in the line of sight corresponding to n e 210 cm–6 pc at a temperature typically of clouds 100 K. The gamma ray spectra from the Bulge arising from interactions of cosmic rays with matter and radiation are then calculated in detail. A comparison made with the estimated background gamma ray spectra from the disk reveals that a detector with angular resolution 6° having a threshold of a few times 10–6 photons cm–2 s–1 can detect this source; this bulge is not found to be a good X-ray source for detection. From a comparison of these calculations with the observed flux above 100 MeV, the following inferences have been deduced: (i) the lower limit to the magnetic field strength at the centre is 12 G, (ii) the observed gamma ray flux towards the Anti-centre can be well explained as due to interactions of cosmic rays with matter alone and a similar explanation towards the center reveals that cloud complexes could be more in the inner parts of the Galaxy than in the outer parts, and (iii) the observed flux values are found to be inconsistent with the existence of submillimeter radiation in the galactic scale.  相似文献

Observational data of the solar diameter in Italy during 1876–1937 and in Greenwich during 1851–1937 were analyzed. The Whittaker operator with different smoothing coefficients was used. The average data sets for the analysis of the possible oscillations of the solar diameter during 1876–1937 were obtained. Average values of the solar radius R(t) and absolute values of its time derivative ¦dR(t)/dt¦ were compared with the Wolf number, W(t), and with the integral A(t) = 0 t W(t)dt + constant. A good correlation r(R, W) = ¦dR(t)/dt¦, W(t) and r(R, A) = R(t), A(t) was found. It was shown that the frequency spectra of R(t) and A(t) are similar. It was found that during odd 11-yr cycles, the solar diameter decreases, whereas during even cycles it increases. A hysteresis-like behavior in the variation of R(t) during the 22-yr solar magnetic cycle was demonstrated.  相似文献

The possibility of the formation of pseudo-resonance absorption lines in planetary nebulae is predicted only theoretically. However, this has not been confirmed by direct observations. In the present article an attempt has been made to show, as a result of careful analysis of IUE spectral recordings for a group of planetary nebulae, that the existence of one pseudo-resonance line 1300 SiIII is without doubt at least in spectra of three planetary nebulae: NGC 2610, NGC 3587, and NGC 6891. The presence of this line in the spectra of the other three planetary nebulae, NGC 6210, IC 3568, and IC 4776, seems to be probable. The role of the interstellar selective absorption, the blending effect by the resonance lines of SiII,Oi, andSi in the formation of the pseudo-resonance line 1300 SiIII as well as the possibility of formation of this line in the photosphere of central star of nebula were analysed.  相似文献

It is shown that X-ray radiation of neutron stars with magnetic fieldsB=1011–1013 G near cyclotron resonances=s B (s=1,2,...) is deeply affected by such quantum effects as electron-positron vacuum polarization (significant at V=3×1028 n e –1 (B/B C 4)1, whereB C =4.4×1013G), the quantizing character of the magnetic field (significant atV=3 x 1028 n e –1 (B/B c)41 whereB c =4.4 x 1013G), the non-harmonic character of the Landau levels, and the quantum recoil of electrons. The latter two factors shift the resonances by the frequency –s 2 B (B/2B c )sin2, being the angle between the direction of radiation propagation and the magnetic field. IfVV 0 (for 1,V 0–1=(mc 2/2T)1/2), the normal mode (NM) polarizations, as well as the absorption coefficientk 1 of the extraordinary NM in the Doppler core of the first resonance (|–| B cos ), is only slightly affected by varyingb and/orV, whereas for the ordinary NM (at 1)k 2k 1 2[b + (3 + tan2–2V)2]k 1. For sufficiently largeb and/orV the quantum effects amplify resonant absorption of the ordinary NM at B , with spin-flip transitions playing a major role atb1+V 2. IfVV 0, the coefficientsk 1 andk 2 in the Doppler core of the resonance are of the same order and acquire some peculiar features (shifts, intersections, etc.), with the NM polarizations depending sharply on and being strongly non-orthogonal. AtVV 0,k 2=k 1(cos2 +B/2B C ) and the polarizations are almost linear. Near high resonances (s2), as a rule,k 1,2(1 + b) s–1 2s–3 i.e., absorption increases withb due to replacement of the thermal energy of the transverse motion of electron,T, by the magnetic energy B . The above effects should be taken into account for an interpretation of observational data on X-ray pulsars (e.g., Her X-1) and other X-ray sources associated with neutron stars.  相似文献

Explorer 34 solar wind data for the period June to December, 1967 show that(a) The magnetic pressure, P BB 2/8, and thermal pressure,P kn p kTp+n kT+n e kTe,are variable and positively correlated on a scale of 2 days, but (b) changes in P b and P k are anticorrelated on a scale 1 hr (0.01 AU). Thus, dynamical hydromagnetic processes (dv/dto) must occur on the mesoscale, but the solar wind tends to be in equilibrium(P B+P Kconstant) on a smaller scale, the microscale. The 3-hr averages show that the most probable value of P k/P B is =1.0±0.1, which implies that the most probable state of the solar wind at 1 AU is not one of equipartition between the thermal energy and magnetic energy. The average total pressure for a given bulk speed(P(V)=P k+P k+P B) is essentially independent of V, implying that P is not determined by the heating or acceleration mechanisms of the solar wind; the average pressure is P=(2.9±1.5)×10-10dyne/cm2.  相似文献
