Biogeochemistry has not been widely used as an exploration technique for Au in Western Australia because (1) sampling of soils and other surficial materials have been reasonably effective in finding new mineral deposits, and (2) it has been difficult to identify a consistent and regionally typical vegetation sample type. The potential of the technique has been tested at three sites in the goldfields of southern Western Australia. Vegetation and soil were analysed for Au from the Bounty (Mt Hope), Panglo and Zuleika Au deposits in the southern Yilgarn Craton. Gold concentrations in vegetation were generally lower at Panglo and Zuleika compared with Bounty, and probably reflect the depth to mineralization which is considerably greater at Panglo (40 m) and Zuleika (20 m) than at Bounty, where it is close to the surface. At Bounty, Au concentrations in dried vegetation varied from < 0.5 ppb in background areas to a maximum of 11 ppb (the highest for any area) over mineralization. In general, the association between Au concentrations in vegetation and mineralization is only weak although, at Zuleika, Maireana (bluebush) seemed a slightly better sample medium than soil for predicting the location of underlying mineralization.As the emphasis in exploration changes to more difficult terrains, the suitability of biogeochemistry needs to be re-examined. These preliminary results from Western Australia suggest that biogeochemistry may have some role to play in the search for deeply buried mineral deposits.  相似文献

Stable isotopes, such as C, N, O and S, are successfully used as classical environmental tracers. During the last few years, heavy stable isotopes are getting more and more attention as tracers and proxies in biogeochemical and environmental studies. Multicollector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) has enabled scientists to obtain high precise isotopic analyses of heavy elements such as Cl, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Hg and Pb. These isotopic systems can be used as important tracers in studying metal contaminants, biomedical processes and pollution of aquatic environments. MC-ICPMS is a powerful technique for the isotopic analysis of most elements, with the exception of light elements such as H, C, N and O and noble gases. The advantage of the ICP source is that it can ionize all elements with very high sensitivity. Various inlet systems can be used to introduce samples into the mass spectrometer, for instance gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), laser ablation, or conventional liquid nebulization. The aerosol is transported by an Ar and/or He gas flow into the ICP source where it is effectively ionized and introduced into the mass analyzer through a differential pumping system. The variable multicollector detector array allows the user to adjust the detector positions along the focal plane of the mass spectrometer so that all isotopes of interest can be measured simultaneously. Molecular interferences as carbides, nitrides, oxides, argides or doubly-charged species can show up in the mass spectrum and interfere with the elemental isotope peaks. High mass resolution is needed to effectively discriminate against these interferences. The ion optics of the Finnigan NEPTUNE is specially designed to meet this requirement and expand the power of isotope ratio measurements even to elements where previously isobaric interferences were the limit.  相似文献

Laboratory simulations of petroleum formation were examined by stable carbon isotope studies of five cryogenic distillation fractions of the gases produced by thermal treatment of organic substrates. Simple heat treatment (pyrolysis) of substrates was contrasted with heat treatment in the presence of nickel and vanadium sulfides, ammonia, and water (catalysis). The effect of substrate/catalyst ratio on the isotopic composition of gases was also examined. All reactions were carried out at 440°C, and ambient pressure. Plots of stable carbon isotope ratio versus distillation temperature, for substrates representing marine and terrestrial organic matter, were compared to literature values for natural petroleum accumulations, and to the pyrolysis of Green River oil shale.  相似文献

Arsenic is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth crust. Humans are exposed to naturally occurring and anthropogenic sources of arsenic compounds in the environment. A wide variety of adverse health effects have been attributed to chronic exposure to high levels of arsenic. More than two-dozen arsenic compounds (species) are present in the environment and in biological systems. The various arsenic species have dramatically different behavior and toxicity. This presentation briefly describes arsenic speciation analysis, human exposure to and metabolism of arsenic species. Environmental issues on arsenic in Canada are briefly discussed. These include (1) the arsenic waste left from previous gold mining and smelting activities; (2) the domestic use of wood treated with chromated copper arsenate; and (3) use of well water as the source of drinking water by approximately one third of the Canadian population.  相似文献

Oil and gas generation is a basic problem of geology and natural sciences, which is associated with energy resources as well as with the origination of life on the Earth. The evolution of hydrocarbons is controlled by the evolution of the biosphere and is an issue of phylogeny. Organic matter (OM) buried in sediments since the Early Precambrian consists mostly of phytoplankton, the main carrier of lipids producing hydrocarbons. Organic matter accumulates in marine sediments according to the law of periodicity. Middle Paleozoic fossilized OM is largely composed of zooplankton. Zooplanktonic OM, classified as sapropelites, had interfered with the process of oil and gas generation since its origin, e.g., tentaculites of the Domanik formation increased oil content. The inception of low-lipid macrophytes gave rise to introduction of humic OM into water bodies and formation of mixed-type OM. The larger the humic component in OM, the higher its gas potential. However, instead of replacing oil generation, enhanced gas generation had come on the scene since the Mesozoic, and their scales were approximately equal. The actual oil/gas ratio in sedimentary basins depends both on phylogenetic factors and on the evolution of each separate basin.  相似文献

The Cantor's dust theory is applied to investigate the scaling properties of the spatial distribution of natural fractures obtained from detailed scanline surveys of 27 field sites in the Appalachian Plateau of western New York, USA. The results obtained in this study indicate: 1) fracture spacing is characterized by fractal and multifractal properties. On small scales analyses yield an average fractal dimension of 0.15, which suggests a very high degree of clustering. In contrast, on large scales, fractures tend to be more regular and evenly distributed with an average fracture dimension of 0.52; 2) fractal dimension varies with different sets in different orientations, which can be attributed to interactions between pre-existing fractures and younger ones, as well as variations of the intensity of the stresses under which the fractures were formed; 3) a time sequence of fracture set formation can be proposed based on fractal and multifractal analyses, which consists of (from old to young): N-S, NW, EN  相似文献

Fluid inclusions are commonly observed in various stages during the diage-netic evolution and the generation,migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons in Lower Permian carbonate rocks in the Xichang Basin, providing direct physico-chemical evidence for the process.Altogether seven stages can be recognized,ie.,the penecontemporane-ous, early and mid-late diagenetic stages, the epidiagenetic stage and the early, middle and late reburying stages.Karst and dissolution pores and structural fissures developed during the epidiagenetic and reburying stages constitute the major reservoirs for hydro-carbon accumulation.Oil generation and migration began in the early reburying stage in Late Permian time and developed to its climax in the middle reburying stage in the Triassic period, followed by extensive generation and migration of natural gases during the late stage of reburying in the Jurassic and later periods.The generation,migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons are closely related to Hercynian basalt eruption and Indosinian and Yenshanian tecto-magmatism.  相似文献

The recharge of a karst aquifer, in terms of its quantity and spatial distribution, depends on various natural factors such as climate, topography, vegetation, soil, and geology. Selection of an adequate method for assessing recharge in karst is often a matter of dispute. Multi-parameter methods using Geographical information systems tools have recently been successfully developed and applied in karstic terrains of Spain and Lebanon. Specific local conditions such as highly karstified terrains could additionally complicate such an assessment. The Montenegro karstified terrains in the southern part of the External Dinarides are characterized by a very high precipitation rate, irregular seasonal distribution, and absence of surface waters (extremely high infiltration capacity of karst). Considering such conditions, an attempt to apply existing knowledge and experiences to the development of an appropriate multi-parameter method for assessing spatial distribution of autogenous recharge has been made. The KARSTLOP method has been developed, applied, and calibrated at catchments of several large karst springs of Montenegro. Obtained results in tested catchment areas confirm that with some further improvements the KARSTLOP method could be a useful tool to support research of karstic aquifers in similar highly karstified terrains.  相似文献

In direct continuation with the acquired knowledge of ecosystem approach for the presence of mercury in the Amazon, we have launched in 2001 the NSERC-supported pan-Canadian COMERN project. This Collaborative Mercury Research Network addresses the urgent need for the development of a framework enabling researchers, political stakeholders, and communities concerned by the mercury question to evolve towards an interdisciplinary association capable of synergistically combining our knowledge on Hg into an original synthesis. We are presenting a simple integrated indicator representative of the specific susceptibility of an ecosystem to Hg bioaccumulation and subsequent transfer to humans. This indicator includes three concepts: (1) the sensitivity to bioaccumulation, induced and influenced by factors such as the Hg loading, the different transport and methylation processes, and human activities; (2) the vulnerability of the populations exposed to Hg through consumption of local and market fish; and (3) the adaptability of the ecosystem and the people living into it, an evaluation of its resilience, or its capacity to recover and/or to cope with the contamination, taking into account the social and political resources within the communities impacted.  相似文献

The thermoluminescence properties of nine CO chondrites have been measured. With the exception of Colony and Allan Hills A77307 (ALHA 77307), whose maximum induced TL emission is at approximately 350°C, CO chondrites exhibit two TL peaks, one at 124 ± 7°C (130°C peak) and one at 252 ± 7°C (250°C peak). The 130°C peak shows a 100-fold range in TL sensitivity (0.99 ± 0.21 for Isna to 0.010 ± 0.004 for Colony), and correlates with various metamorphism-related phenomena, such as silicate heterogeneity, metal composition and McSween's metamorphic subtypes. The peak at 250°C does not show these correlations and, Colony excepted, varies little throughout the class (0.3 to 0.07, Colony 0.018 ± 0.004). Mineral separation experiments, and a series of annealing experiments on Isna, suggest that the TL properties for CO chondrites reflect the presence of feldspar in two forms, (1) a form produced during metamorphism, and analogous to the dominant form of feldspar in type 3 ordinary chondrites, and (2) a primary, metamorphism-independent form, perhaps associated with the amoeboid inclusions. If this interpretation is correct, then the CO chondrites have not experienced temperatures above the order/disorder temperature for feldspar (500–600°C) and they cooled more slowly than comparable (i.e. type <3.5) type 3 ordinary chondrites. Colony and ALHA 77307 have atypical TL properties, including very low TL sensitivity, suggesting that phosphors other than feldspar are important. They have apparently experienced less metamorphism than the others, and may have also been aqueously altered.  相似文献

Integrated geological and geophysical investigations were carried out in 26 active mines in Northwestern China during the period 2001–2006 to explore for hidden extensions of known ore bodies and to search for new mineralization. This paper presents four case studies from northwest China: the Kuoerzhenkuoa volcanogenic hydrothermal gold deposit, the Nanjinshan breccia-associated gold deposit, the Duolanasayi deposit, associated with a ductile–shear zone, and the Hulu magmatic Cu–Ni sulfide deposit. In these studies, detailed mine-scale geological studies were carried out to determine the location and controls on ore formation. Based on these investigations and a review of previous exploration data, genetic models for the deposits were evaluated, and specific new targets were generated. These target areas were tested with surface geophysical surveys using the Stratagem EH4 system, a hybrid-source magnetotellurics (MT) method. Analysis of the data obtained in the surveys identified geophysical target anomalies that were subsequently drilled. Many of these test holes demonstrate the presence of Au and Cu–Ni mineralization. Evaluation of the geological models was crucial in developing conceptual targets as a basis for surface geophysical surveys. These models established the most likely target areas where Au and Cu–Ni mineralization could occur, but they did not define the limits or the geometries of the mineralized zones. Hybrid MT surveys played an important role in defining the location of buried mineralized systems and in testing the validity of the conceptual targets. The resistivity cross-sections obtained by imaging the MT data established the boundaries and geometries of the host rocks, including the distribution of lithology, structures, alteration, and mineralization. The four case studies in this paper show how this integrated geological and geophysical approach was used successfully to discover hidden mineral deposits.

Long-term water infiltration into porous media, like clastic deposits, causes colmatage (clogging), which is expressed by the decrease of permeability. It is caused by progressive filling of pore spaces with fine particles carried in suspension (mechanical colmatage) and minerals precipitated from water (chemical colmatage or biochemical colmatage, when the process is affected by bacterial activity). Although this material is introduced into the sediment after deposition, it does not destroy the primary framework of it but it only coats grains and fills voids. This process results in some characteristic microstructures that are called ‘clogging microstructures’. The research included: (1) experiments on sands exposed to mechanical colmatage in laboratory conditions, which aimed to describe clogging microstructures and to examine the effects of grain size distribution on the rate and degree of clogging; (2) field and laboratory studies of deposits in which colmatage occurred in natural conditions in the infiltrating water intake ‘Dębina’ in Poznań, Poland. The main goal of the research was to identify post-depositional changes that took place in fluvial deposits affected by forced river water infiltration in the Warta River valley. Examples are presented of clogging microstructures formed in deposits affected by colmatage in the laboratory and in natural conditions.

Hazard and risk assessment of earthquake-induced landslides—case study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Landslides as secondary seismic effects are causing some patterns of soil failure that are often considered among the most destructive ones. In fact, the impact from triggered landslides has sometimes exceeded damage directly related to strong shaking and fault rupture. The objective of this research study is landslide hazard and risk assessment considering different water saturation and earthquake scenarios, for a selected area in a sub-urban hilly part of Skopje—the capital of Macedonia. The final product is represented by digital maps of expected permanent displacements for a defined earthquake scenario, in different water saturation conditions of the instable soil layer. Qualitative landslide risk assessment is performed taking into consideration the exposure map of the habitants and local road of the area. As to the target area, it can be concluded that it has the potential for instability that, under certain scenarios, could result in economic and social damage (vulnerability of individual houses, vulnerability of infrastructure and alike). The results from this study referring to potentially affected population and infrastructure present solid base for preventive mitigation activities for reducing the consequences of geotechnical hazards in Skopje City associated with earthquakes.  相似文献

A comprehensive analytical as well as numerical treatment of seismological, geological, geomorphological and geotechnical concepts has been implemented through microzonation projects in the northeast Indian provinces of Sikkim Himalaya and Guwahati city, representing cases of contrasting geological backgrounds — a hilly terrain and a predominantly alluvial basin respectively. The estimated maximum earthquakes in the underlying seismic source zones, demarcated in the broad northeast Indian region, implicates scenario earthquakes of M W 8.3 and 8.7 to the respective study regions for deterministic seismic hazard assessments. The microzonation approach as undertaken in the present analyses involves multi-criteria seismic hazard evaluation through thematic integration of contributing factors. The geomorphological themes for Sikkim Himalaya include surface geology, soil cover, slope, rock outcrop and landslide integrated to achieve geological hazard distribution. Seismological themes, namely surface consistent peak ground acceleration and predominant frequency were, thereafter, overlaid on and added with the geological hazard distribution to obtain the seismic hazard microzonation map of the Sikkim Himalaya. On the other hand, the microzonation study of Guwahati city accounts for eight themes — geological and geomorphological, basement or bedrock, landuse, landslide, factor of safety for soil stability, shear wave velocity, predominant frequency, and surface consistent peak ground acceleration. The five broad qualitative hazard classifications — ‘low’, ‘moderate’, ‘high’, ‘moderate high’ and ‘very high’ could be applied in both the cases, albeit with different implications to peak ground acceleration variations. These developed hazard maps offer better representation of the local specific seismic hazard variation in the terrain.  相似文献

This study was conducted in the tropical moist deciduous forest in Bangladesh to describe the species composition, diversity, and the forest structure. There were three plots established in Ranishonkoil, Ruhia, and Baliadangi forest beat in Thakurgaon. A total of 126 tree species, 1,991 stems (663 ha?1) of ≥10-cm girth were listed. Tree communities in these forest region differed in dominance, composition, diversity, and structure; and tree stand density varied from 651 to 685 ha?1. Species diversity (H1) ranges from 3.11 to 3.48. Meliaceae, Myrtaceae, and Rubiaceae were the most abundant families within the three plot area. Study site 2 is more diverse at spatial scale and taxonomic levels due to high rainfall and favorable edaphic condition. This study will help the foresters as baseline information for monitoring and sustaining diversity of tropical moist deciduous forests in Bangladesh.  相似文献

A surface geochemical survey was carried on in an area with a cluster of petroleum deposits in western Poland. The largest of these accumulations is the Papro?-Cicha Góra dry gas deposit reservoired in the Rotliegend sediments. Other, similar gas deposits are: the Papro? gas field discovered in the top part of the Carboniferous formation and the Papro? W, Papro? N, and Nowy Tomy?l gas fields localized in the Zechstein Limestone reef structures. Moreover, the Papro? gas-condensate and the Jastrz?bsko oil deposits were found at shallower depths, in the Main Dolomite formation. This paper aims to analyze the variability of composition and distribution of near-surface gaseous hydrocarbons in relation to hydrocarbon accumulations reservoired in various stratigraphic units at depths.  相似文献
