Nearly half a century after mine closure, release of As from the Ylöjärvi Cu–W–As mine tailings in groundwater and surface water run-off was observed. Investigations by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), synchrotron-based micro-X-ray diffraction (μ-XRD), micro-X-ray absorption near edge structure (μ-XANES) and micro-extended X-ray absorption fine structure (μ-EXAFS) spectroscopy, and a sequential extraction procedure were performed to assess As attenuation mechanisms in the vadose zone of this tailings deposit. Results of SEM, EMPA, and sequential extractions indicated that the precipitation of As bearing Fe(III) (oxy)hydroxides (up to 18.4 wt.% As2O5) and Fe(III) arsenates were important secondary controls on As mobility. The μ-XRD, μ-XANES and μ-EXAFS analyses suggested that these phases correspond to poorly crystalline and disordered As-bearing precipitates, including arsenical ferrihydrite, scorodite, kaňkite, and hydrous ferric arsenate (HFA). The pH within 200 cm of the tailings surface averaged 5.7, conditions which favor the precipitation of ferrihydrite. Poorly crystalline Fe(III) arsenates are potentially unstable over time, and their transformation to ferrihydrite, which contributes to As uptake, has potential to increase the As adsorption capacity of the tailings. Arsenic mobility in tailings pore water at the Ylöjärvi mine will depend on continued arsenopyrite oxidation, dissolution or transformation of secondary Fe(III) arsenates, and the As adsorption capacity of Fe(III) (oxy)hydroxides within this tailings deposit. 相似文献

In the old mining area of Rodalquilar, mine wastes, soil and sediments were characterized and the results revealed high concentration of Au, Ag, As, Bi, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Se, Sb and Zn in tailings and sediments. The contaminant of greatest environmental concern is As. The mean concentration in the tailings was 679.9, and 345 mg/kg in the sediments of Playazo creek. The groundwater samples from the alluvial aquifer showed high concentration of Al, As, Cd, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Sb and Zn and very high concentration of chloride and sulfate, which were above the concentration defined in the European standards for drinking water. The presence of As in groundwater may be caused by the oxidation of arsenian pyrite, the possible As desorption from goethite and ferrihydrite and the jarosite dissolution. Groundwater concentrations of Cd, Fe, Mn, and possibly Cu, were associated with low values of Eh, indicating the possible dissolution of oxy-hydroxides of Fe and Mn. The mobility of metals in the column experiments show the release of Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, V and Zn in significant concentrations but below the detected values in groundwater. However, As, Cd, Sb, Se Pb and Au, are generally mobilized in concentrations above the detected values in groundwater. The possible mass transfer processes that could explain the presence of the contaminants in the aquifer and the leachates was simulated with the PHREEQC numerical code and revealed the possible dissolution of the following mineral phases: jarosite, natrojarosite, arsenian pyrite, alunite, chlorite, kaolinite and calcite. 相似文献

This study appraised the use of phosphate fertilisers in immobilising metals in mine tailings to prevent their uptake into Curly Mitchell grass (Astrebla lappacea), when grown on capped, phosphate-amended tailings. Leaching experiments showed that Pb mobility was reduced by both bone meal and superphosphate amendment. Bone meal amendment also reduced Cd mobility. By contrast, Cd, Mn and Zn mobility increased in superphosphate-amended tailings due to increased acid production and, Cu was mobilised in bone meal-amended tailings possibly through the formation of soluble metal-complexing organic compounds. Arsenic and Sb were mobilised in both treatments due to phosphate ligand exchange. Greenhouse trials used Curly Mitchell grass grown on 1-m-high columns stacked with waste materials and different amendments overlain by clean topsoil. Curly Mitchell grass showed substantial uptake of Cd, Mn, Pb and Zn from unamended tailings and waste rock, where these were penetrated by the plant’s root system. Addition of phosphate fertilisers to the surface of tailings did not result in reduced metal uptake by Curly Mitchell grass. In tailings capped with limestone, the limestone layer formed an effective physical barrier preventing root penetration into the tailings and led to substantially reduced metal uptake in grass. The study demonstrates that thorough mixing of waste materials and fertilisers as well as irrigation may be required for successful phosphate immobilisation of metals in base metal tailings. Alternatively, the placement of a thin layer of crushed limestone on top of the tailings pile prior to capping may lead to the formation of a chemical and physical barrier and prevent the transfer of environmentally significant elements into the above-ground biomass of Mitchell grasses. 相似文献

The ores of the Yata gold mine in China are rich in arsenic and antimony, so the exploitation of this mine may also lead to the release of As and Sb to adjacent environments, such as stream water, stream sediment, soil, plants, and crops. To understand the environmental impact of mine tailings, samples of water, sediment, soil, plant and crop were collected and analyzed. In summer of 2005, the tailings dump was seriously flushed by a heavy flood, and the mine waste was transported far away. Samples were collected in December of 2004 and January of 2006, respectively, and the impact of the flood on the release of toxic elements was evaluated. The result shows that the Yata creek, which drains the mining area, was severely contaminated by As and Sb. The dissolved As and Sb in water are 86-1140 μg/L and 65-370 μg/L, the particulate As and Sb are 38-2100 μg/L and 25-420 μg/L, whereas As and Sb in the sediment are 190-760 μg/g and 69-210 μg/g, respectively. In water environment, As and Sb show a similar feature to SO4^2- since As and Sb exist dominantly as anions--H2AsO4^-, HAsO4^2- and SbO3^-. In contrast to Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, which migrate mostly in particulate form, As and Sb tend to transport in dissolved form. 相似文献

Mine water inrush is one of the main hazards in coal mining industry. The mechanism and the processes are complex. Investigation of the spatiotemporal development of the hydrological process could lead to a better understanding of mine water inrush and effective countermeasures. For this reason, we investigated spatial and temporal characteristics (i.e., the changes of flow rate, groundwater level, and water quality) during a water inrush event in China, which had a flow rate of 730 m3/h at maximum and 300m3/h under a steady condition. The result shows that the water inrush developed in several stages. A mathematical model of the dynamic change between the water table and the inrush flow rate was constructed. Based on this model, we found the relationship of highly conductive flow channels between some observation boreholes and the water inrush point. In addition, the recharge velocity of the highly conductive flow channels and the equivalent mean flow velocity of the whole mine were determined. A comprehensive analysis of geological, hydrodynamic, and crustal stress conditions was conducted to study the development of the water channel near the F13 fault and the nonlinear process from seepage stage to inrush stage. The result reveals the water inrush is likely caused by activation of faults under combined influences of high crustal stress and high hydraulic pressure. 相似文献

Concentrations of Pb and Zn, plant uptake of these metals, the influence of the plants’ growth on the physicochemical properties and metal concentrations in the tailings of an abandoned 300-year-old mine tailing dam in Zacatecas, Mexico were investigated. Tailings were found to be heavily contaminated, with average levels of 2621 ± 53 and 3827 ± 83 mg/kg for Pb and Zn, respectively (maximum concentrations of 8466 ± 116 and 12,475 ± 324 mg/kg, respectively), exceeding international standards. Though physico-chemical conditions (pH, conductivity, redox potential, moisture, organic matter, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfates) do not favor the development of vegetation, some plants have adapted to these adverse conditions. Moreover, there was a significant reduction of Pb and Zn concentration in the rhizosphere (between 10–78% for Pb and 18–62% for Zn, depending on plant species). Sporobolus airoides showed average biomass concentrations of 173 ± 2 and 313 ± 6 mg/kg, for Pb and Zn, respectively; which implies a risk for mobility and possible incorporation into the food chain. Barcleyanthus salicifolius, Asclepsias linaria and Cortaderia selloana on the other hand, showed average biomass concentrations of 28 ± 3 and 121 ± 5 mg/kg of Pb and Zn, respectively, thus representing a lower biomagnification risk. The effect of these plants to reduce metal concentrations in the rhizosphere, improve physico-chemical conditions in metal polluted substrates, but with limited metal accumulation in biomass, suggests that they can be evaluated for use in stabilizing metal polluted tailings. 相似文献

Stochastic continuum modeling of flow and transport in a crystalline rock mass: Fanay-Augères,France, revisited 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A stochastic discrete-fracture model was used by Cacas et al.a,b to interpret flow measurements and transport experiments in a fractured crystalline rock mass at Fanay-Augères. They considered continuum models to be incapable of properly interpreting small-scale measurements or tracer tests in fractured systems, which, in their view, require three-dimensional modeling of numerous discrete channels; in their opinion, continuum modeling applies only to average flow on a relatively large scale. Cacas et al. considered their discrete fracture model to have been validated by its demonstrated ability to reproduce selected experimental results. In this paper, flow and transport at Fanay-Augères are modeled by viewing the fractured rock as a stochastic continuum in a manner originally proposed by Neumanc,d. The stochastic continuum approach obviates the need for detailed information about fracture geometry or assumptions about how individual fractures control flow and transport. All it requires is the delineation of a few dominant features, which can be embedded into the stochastic continuum model as heterogeneous porous slabs. Though a fault zone has been identified at the Fanay-Augères experimental site, it has been modeled neither by Cacas et al. nor in this paper. In fact, in this paper, a larger selection of experimental results than those considered by Cacas et al. are reproduced merely by modeling the rock as a statistically homogeneous continuum in two dimensions. These results demonstrate that a continuum approach may be well suited for the analysis of flow and transport in fractured rock. This does not constitute a validation of the continuum approach, just as the results of Cacas et al. fall short of validating the discrete fracture approach. Instead, the two sets of results illustrate jointly the well-established principle that an open system, especially one as complex as fractured hydrogeologic environments tend to be, cannot be described uniquely on the basis of sparse data and need not be described in great detail to capture its salient behavior by a model.a Cacas MC, Ledoux E, de Marsily G, Barbreau A, Calmels P, Gaillard B, Margritta R (1990a) Modelling fracture flow with a stochastic discrete fracture network: calibration and validation. 1. Acid mine drainage (AMD) has been recognized as a major environmental pollution problem over past decades. This pollutant effluent is complex and is characterized by elevated concentrations of iron and sulfate, low pH, and high concentrations of a wide variety of metals depending on the host rock geology. Massive inadvertent discharges from acid mines have given rise to dramatic cases of ecological damage. These events indicate an improved understanding of the mechanism controlling metal transport to the river is important, since the aquatic ecology will be affected, to some degree, dependent on the phase (dissolved or particulate) in which the metal is transported. In this study, polluted water samples were collected along the Hengshi River near the Dabaoshan mine, Guangdong, China, in April 2005. The concentrations of dissolved Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb have been determined using ICP-MS and the chemical speciation of those metals in suspended particles was examined using BCR methods and SEM/EDX mineralogical analysis. Combining these two sets of data, the intention was to develop geochemical concepts, which explain the behavior of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in particle-water interactions of heavy metals in AMD. The results show that the dissolved heavy metals exhibited non-conservative behavior in the Hengshi River. The dissolved and particulate Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb have the similar spatial distribution, which decreased gradually along the river except in the lower reaches because of the absorption-desorption between dissolved and particulate phases. Although the metal concentrations in both phases were elevated, dissolved metals were dominant and had the maximum concentrations in the low pH region. 相似文献

In this work we have studied the geochemistry of stream waters arising from waste dumps at the Peña de Hierro mine (Iberian Pyrite Belt, SW Spain), and we have correlated them with the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the wastes to asses the source and factors affecting the release of trace elements. The mineralogical composition and geochemistry of 58 borehole samples of waste dumps were studied in the <2 mm fraction. Twenty-eight water samples collected in winter and summer from streams emerging from the waste dumps were analysed for pH, Eh, conductivity, temperature, sulphates and major and trace elements. The leachates from pyrite-rich volcanic tuffs produced very acidic waters, usually with pHs below 2 and reaching values as low as 0.7. The partial dissolution of gossan, which is mainly composed of Fe oxy-hydroxides and is rich in trace elements, released high concentrations of Fetot (up to 33 g/L), As (up to 72), Mo (up to 11 mg/L). On the other hand Cd, Zn and Pb reached up to 0.85, 142 and 0.42 mg/L, respectively, in the stream arising from roasted pyrite ashes and other pyritic wastes. Several elements such as Al, Fe, As, Co, Cu and Mo were strongly correlated with the pH, but Cd and Zn were not correlated under such acidic conditions. The precipitation of jarosite seems to be an important factor in the retention of Pb. The mobility sequence of trace elements shows that Co, Zn and Cd were among the most mobile elements; Cu, As and Mo had intermediate mobility, and Pb was the most immobile. This work shows that uncontrolled waste dumping increases the pollution potential, and a selective management could reduce the release of trace elements into stream waters and mitigate the contamination. 相似文献

Commercial gold mining of the Witwatersrand Supergroup in the Far West Rand goldfields of South Africa started early in the previous century and produced U as a by-product. Grades of up to 1000 mg/kg, was achieved between 1952 and 1991. Before and after this period large amounts of U brought to the surface as part of the gold ore-material were deposited as solid-water-mixtures (sludge) on slimes dams. Tailings of gold mines in the Witwatersrand basin therefore contain elevated levels of radioactive and chemo-toxic heavy metals. Mining for gold occurs at great depths below the Transvaal Supergroup dolomite. The inflow of water from the overlying dolomite aquifers resulted in substantial volumes being pumped continuously from the mine void to prevent flooding. Since large-scale dewatering of the dolomite compartments was allowed for mining, extensive sinkhole formation occurred. Between 1960 and 2000, these sinkholes and other subsidence features were back:filled as part of rehabilitation program, using a mixture of mine tailings and cement. Many of the gold mines are reaching the end of their economic viability and will close down in the next few years. Dewatering of the dolomite water compartments will come to an end resulting in a gradual rise in the water table. The uncontrolled rise of the water table to pre-mining levels will not only result in further land degradation due to renewed ground instability but also may also lead to uncontrolled pollution and acid mine drainage imminent from slimes filled sinkholes and cavities Furthermore, gold tailings facilities were placed on well-drained dolomite, resulting in seepage of dissolved U from tailing deposits into the dolomitic aquifer. The majority of the studies into mining-related pollution conducted thus far focused either on point-discharges of mining effluents into surface streams or on erosion of tailing particles from slime dams as contamination sources. This paper investigates the magnitude of land degradation and pollution potential of the sinkholes filled by tailings and cement. A combination of LIDAR and Aerial magnetic and radiometric techniques are used to localize sinkholes, structures such as dykes and faults along which polluted water will be transported from slimes and tailings into the aquifer. 相似文献

Porphyritic granitoids that host the Sangan iron mine deposit belong to the Khaf–Kashmar–Bardaskan volcanoplutonic belt in northeastern Iran. These intrusive rocks, mostly quartz monzonite to syenogranite porphyries, have been divided into three groups on the basis of crosscutting relationships and zircon U–Pb dating: (1) group 1, 42.3 ± 0.8 Ma, (2) group 2, 40.0 ± 0.5 Ma, and (3) group 3, 39.2 ± 0.6 Ma. The group 1 and 2 rocks host magnetite mineralization, whereas the group 3 intrusions are interpreted as syn-mineralization. They have features typical of high-K alkali-calcic to calc-alkalic magnesian rocks and are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous formed in a volcanic arc setting. Mantle-normalized, trace-element spider diagrams display enrichment in large ion lithophile elements, such as Rb, Ba, K, and Cs, and depletion in high field strength elements, e.g., Nb, Ti, Ta, Zr, Y, and heavy rare earth elements, with moderate to strong light rare earth elements enrichment ((La/Yb)N = 24.8–7.6) and a negative Eu anomaly. The parental magmas are probably derived from partial melting of mantle that had been metasomatized by a slab-derived fluid. During the upward migration of these melts, additional input of crustal materials could account for the high K characteristic for most of the intrusive rocks around the Sangan mine area.Textural evidence and mineral assemblages indicate the Sangan Fe-skarn is an oxidized magmatic-hydrothermal system caused by the group 3 intrusions. 相似文献

Water inrush into coal mines from aquifers underlying coal seams often causes serious casualties and economic losses. The key to preventing the disaster is to discover a water inrush mechanism suitable for specific geological and hydrogeological conditions and apply reasonable control measures. A case of the Chensilou mine is studied in this paper. Complex geological and hydrogeological conditions, such as 12 aquifers in the floor and small distance between coal seam and aquifer, make the mining face in the synclinal basin have a great risk of water inrush. In addition, as an important way to prevent the disaster, grouting will aggravate the risk of water inrush from the floor. The slurry will drive groundwater in the limestone aquifers L8, even L7 and L6 along the horizontal (fracture zone in L11~L8) and vertical (Fs1 ~Fd1) water flow channel into the mining face and synclinal basin. A new water inrush mechanism driven by grouting is formed. In order to prevent this disaster, based on statistical law of hole deviation, the relative error of vertical depth and the angle between the borehole and the rock formation are obtained. Finally, an improved grouting method is proposed, which is useful to ensure the safe production of coal mine and reduce the cost of grouting. 相似文献

Fluvial dissolved Fe concentrations decrease upon mixing with seawater, resulting in the formation of Fe-floccules. However, a clear understanding of the fate of these floccules has yet to be established. Assessing how tidal processes affect the formation of Fe-colloids in the Leirárvogur estuary, SW Iceland, is an important step in understanding the formation and potential deposition of estuarine Fe-rich minerals within this estuarine system. The Leirárvogur estuary drains predominately Fe-rich basalt, increasing the likelihood of detecting changes in Fe-phases. Fluvial waters and local lake waters that drain into the estuary were compared and the effects of seasonal changes were considered, in an attempt to understand how varying end-members and external factors play a role in Fe-rich mineral formation. Aqueous and colloidal Fe concentrations were found to be greater towards the head of the Leirárvogur estuary, suggesting that potential Fe-rich minerals and complexes are forming at sites of fluvial input. Increasing suspended colloidal Fe towards the estuary mouth suggests that Fe-colloids are readily transported seaward. 相似文献

High arsenic (As) groundwater is widely distributed in northwestern Hetao Plain, an arid region with sluggish groundwater
flow. Observed As concentration in groundwater from wells ranges from 76 to 1,093 μg/l. Most water samples have high total
dissolved solids, with Cl and HCO3 as the dominant anions and Na as the dominant cation. The major hydrochemical types of most saline groundwaters are Na–Mg–Cl–HCO3 and Na–Mg–Cl. By contrast, fresh groundwaters generally belong to the Na–Mg–HCO3 type. High concentrations of arsenic in shallow aquifers are associated with strongly reducing conditions, as evidenced by
high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, ammonium, as well as dissolved sulfide and Fe, dominance of arsenite, relatively
low concentrations of nitrate and sulfate, and occasionally high content of dissolved methane (CH4). High As groundwaters from different places at Hetao Plain experienced different redox processes. Fluoride is also present
in high As groundwater, ranging between 0.40 and 3.36 mg/l. Although fluorosis poses an additional health problem in the region,
it does not correlate well with As in spatial distribution. Geochemical analysis indicates that evapotranspiration is an important
process controlling the enrichment of Na and Cl, as well as trace elements such as As, B, and Br in groundwater.

Divergent growth trajectories in China’s chemical industry: the case of the newly developed industrial parks in Shanghai,Nanjing and Ningbo 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the late 1990’s, the “new-economy” industries in China proved to be relatively vulnerable and were strongly hit by the
financial crisis in Asia. As a result, a new economic support policy was introduced in China’s Yangtze Delta region, which
put greater emphasis on the support of traditional industrial sectors, including the chemical industry. This paper investigates
the effects of the growth of this industry, as well as the potential and current problems emerging from new growth paths.
It compares the growth of three newly developed chemical industry parks in Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo. The paper is based
on an institutional perspective of clustering processes arguing that regional industrialization is subject to formal and informal
institutions which shape the growth paths and contribute to divergent regional trajectories. Although these industrial parks
all benefit from the general economic upswing in China, their development is influenced by different business models, economic
contexts, goals and strategies, leaving room for divergence and specialization. Due to the existing structure of operations,
these parks have a great deal of potential but also face substantial challenges, such as the establishment of internal networks
and close customer linkages. It is argued that this might limit their innovative capability in the future. Furthermore, their
growth prospects differ depending on future government policies. 相似文献
