Summary Baotite occurs in the Garaoulére orebody, at Pierreftte, France, as an accessory mineral, included in alstonite and celsian, and associated with sphalerite, galena, pyrite, siderite and calcite in hydrothermal veins crosscutting calcareous, rutile-bearing, siltstones. Microprobe analyses revealed high W03 concentrations (up to 6 wt.%) in baotite. The empirical formula of W-rich baotite is Ba3.959Ti4(Ti3.169W0.393Fe0.116Al0.073 Cr0.048Nb0.024)3.823 Si4.05O28Cl1.166. The excess of charges due to the presence of W6+ and Nb5+ is compensated by the introduction of M3+ (Fe, Al, Cr) into Ti-octahedra, by the appearance of Al in Si-tetrahedra (for W-poor baotite) and by the appearance of vacancies in Ti-octahedra (3Ti4 -> 2W6+ + and in Ba-sites (Ti4+ Ba2+ W6+, ). The unit-cell parameters of W-rich baotite are: a = 19.92(2), c = 5.930(8) Å. Niobium-rich baotites (Baiyun-Obo,Semenov et al., 1961; Karlstein,Nmec, 1987) are characterized by substitutions: Ti4+(VI), Si4+(IV)Nb5+(VI), Al3+(IV) and 2Ti4+, Ba2+ 2Nb5+, .

Summary A detailed electron microprobe study of P, F, Ge and Ga-contents in rock-forming topaz was performed on a suite of Variscan granites at Podlesí in the western Kruné Hory Mts., Czech Republic. Topaz crystals from the relatively less evolved biotite- and protolithionite granites display homogeneous cathodo-luminescence (CL) intensities, whereas topaz from the marginal pegmatite, highly fractionated zinnwaldite granite and greisens show intense oscillatory zoning. Phosphorus contents reach 1.15wt% P2O5 in topaz from the zinnwaldite granite. Many topaz crystals are distinctly zoned with a maximum P content in the transition zone between core and rim. Phosphorus is incorporated into the topaz lattice by berlinite substitution: Al3++P5+=Si4++Si4+. The majority of analysed topazes are highly saturated in F, reaching 90–97% of the theoretical maximum saturation. Topaz from the marginal pegmatite only reaches 87–90% of F-saturation. There is a positive correlation between Ptopaz and Pwhole rock, but no correlation between Ftopaz and Fwhole rock. No difference has been found in P and F contents between magmatic and the hydrothermal (=greisen stage) topaz. Contents of Ge and Ga vary from around the detection limit (50ppm) up to 200ppm Ge and 100ppm Ga, respectively.

The behaviour of solubility for some minerals, which were for the most part found as vein minerals, was determined experimentally and is represented by summarizing diagrams. In the temperature-solubility diagram the hydrothermal solubility of fluorite, barite, celestine and anglesite is compared to the solubility of quartz and muskovite for the boundary curve of the three-phase region and for some isochores. As opposed to SiO2, which is molecularly dispersed in solution, the ionic solutions of the systems CaF2-H2O, BaSO4-H2O, SrSO4-H2O and PbSO4-H2O show considerable displacement of the saturation equilibrium when other components are present in the solution. This influence on the solubility, significant for the genetic relations of mineral deposits, was quantitatively analyzed for 0.1–0.2 n-NaCl solutions. The results are isothermally shown in the NaCl-concentration solubility diagram within the boundaries of room temperature and the boiling point of the aqueous mixed phases. In the tenary systems BaSO4-NaCl-H2O and SrSO4-NaCl-H2O, the hydro-thermal solubility of barite and celestine in 2.0 n-NaCl solutions is also shown for the range of the boundary curve of the three-phase region and for the isochores 0.326–0.6 up to a temperature of 600° C and a pressure of 2000 bar. These solubilities are then compared with the diagrams of solubility for pure aqueous solutions. The irregular and incongruent behaviour of the solubility of aluminium-silicates of a layered-lattic structure is demonstrated for the system KAl2(OH)2-AlSi2O10-H2O in the presence of muscovite by experimental determination of the non-stoechiometric molecular proportions of SiO2K2O and SiO2 Al2O3. Such determination was conducted in saturated solutions for the hydrothermal range of the existence of muscovite. The geological importance of the knowledge of hydrothermal data of solubility and their application to the process of the hydrothermalmagmatic series and hydrothermalmetamorphosis is discussed.

A suite of vanadian magnesiochromites from the Sludyanka metamorphic complex (South Lake Baikal, Russia) were investigated by means of X-ray single-crystal structural refinements and microprobe analyses. Various morphological types of Cr–V-bearing Mg spinels are located in calc–silicate metamorphic rocks, in an assemblage that also contains other Cr–V minerals such as escolaite–karelianite, uvarovite–goldmanite, Cr–V-bearing clinopyroxene, tourmaline, amphibole, mica, etc. Along the suite there is widespread V–Cr substitution (0.14 V3+ 0.95 afu, 1.02 Cr3+ 1.80 afu), and minor, variable Al contents. The Mg content of slightly lesser than 1 afu, is almost constant. Cell parameters and octahedral bond distances increase with V3+. Unexpectedly, the Mg–O tetrahedral bond distance also increases slowly with V3+. This weak dragging effect contributes towards maintaining distortion of the oxygen array with respect to the ideal CCP, thus providing a shielding effect, which reduces V3+–V3+ repulsion. This leads to the energetic stabilization of the structure, in spite of the increase of bond strain with increasing V3+ contents.

The world-class Idrija mercury deposit (western Slovenia) is hosted by highly deformed Permocarboniferous to Middle Triassic sedimentary rocks within a complex tectonic structure at the transition between the External Dinarides and the Southern Alps. Concordant and discordant mineralization formed concomitant with Middle Triassic bimodal volcanism in an aborted rift. A multiple isotopic (C, O, S) investigation of host rocks and ore minerals was performed to put constraints on the source and composition of the fluid, and the hydrothermal alteration. The distributions of the 13C and 18O values of host and gangue carbonates are indicative of a fracture-controlled hydrothermal system, with locally high fluid-rock ratios. Quantitative modeling of the 13C and 18O covariation for host carbonates during temperature dependent fluid-rock interaction, and concomitant precipitation of void-filling dolomites points to a slightly acidic hydrothermal fluid (13C–4 and 18O+10), which most likely evolved during isotopic exchange with carbonates under low fluid/rock ratios. The 34S values of hydrothermal and sedimentary sulfur minerals were used to re-evaluate the previously proposed magmatic and evaporitic sulfur sources for the mineralization, and to assess the importance of other possible sulfur sources such as the contemporaneous seawater sulfate, sedimentary pyrite, and organic sulfur compounds. The 34S values of the sulfides show a large variation at deposit down to hand-specimen scale. They range for cinnabar and pyrite from –19.1 to +22.8, and from –22.4 to +59.6, respectively, suggesting mixing of sulfur from different sources. The peak of 34S values of cinnabar and pyrite close to 0 is compatible with ore sulfur derived dominantly from a magmatic fluid and/or from hydrothermal leaching of basement rocks. The similar stratigraphic trends of the 34S values of both cinnabar and pyrite suggest a minor contribution of sedimentary sulfur (pyrite and organic sulfur) to the ore formation. Some of the positive 34S values are probably derived from thermochemical reduction of evaporitic and contemporaneous seawater sulfates.

Iron- and vanadium-bearing kyanites have been synthesized at 900 and 1100° C/20 kb in a piston-cylinder apparatus using Mn2O3/Mn3O4- and MnO/Mn-mixtures, respectively, as oxygen buffers. Solid solubility on the pseudobinary section Al2SiO5-Fe2SiO5(-V2SiO5) of the system Al2O3-Fe2O3(V2O3)-SiO2 extends up to 6.5 mole% (14mole %) of the theoretical end member FeSiO5(V2SiO5) at 900°C/20 kb. For bulk compositions with higher Fe2SiO5 (V2SiO5) contents the corundum type phases M2O3(M = Fe3+, V3+) are found to coexist with the Fe3+(V3+)-saturated kyanite solid solution plus quartz. The extent of solid solubility on the join Al2SiO5-Fe2SiO5 at 1 100°C was not found to be significantly higher than at 900° C. Microprobe analyses of iron bearing kyanites gave no significant indication of ternary solid solubility in these mixed crystals. Lattice constants a 0, b 0, c 0, and V0 of the kyanite solid solutions increase with increasing Fe2SiO5- and V2SiO5-contents proportionally to the ionic radii of Fe3+ and V3+, respectively, the triclinic angles ,, remain constant. Iron kyanites are light yellowish-green, vanadium kyanites are light green. Iron kyanites, (Al1.87 Fe 0.13 3+ )SiO5, were obtained as crystals up to 700 m in length.

Preliminary studies have been made on the distributions of oxygen and sulphur isotopes in the Rosebery, Mount Farrell, and Mount Lyell ores. These ores lie in Cambrian geosynclinal volcanic rocks in West Tasmania. At each locality the sulphur of the sulphide minerals has a distinctive degree of enrichment in 34S in relation to sulphur in meteorites and a narrow range of 34S values. The dominant ore at Mount Lyell (mainly pyrite-chalcopyrite) has an average 34S value of +7.0, the main lode at Rosebery (pyrite-sphalerite-galenachalcopyrite) averages +10.9, and the Mount Farrell ore (galena-sphalerite) averages +14.1. The degree of enrichment does not appear to be related to local, near-surface geological factors. Other ores of geosynclinal volcanic type with similar mineralogy also show narrow ranges in 34S and varying enrichments in 34S. Barite from a concordant sulphide-barite-carbonate lode at Rosebery has an average 34S of +38.1 and an average 18O of +10.7. Barite from veins at Mount Lyell has an average 34S of +25.3 and an average 18O of +10.6.

DC and AC electrical conductivities were measured on samples of two different crystals of the mineral aegirine (NaFeSi2O6) parallel () and perpendicular () to the [001] direction of the clinopyroxene structure between 200 and 600 K. Impedance spectroscopy was applied (20 Hz–1 MHz) and the bulk DC conductivity DC was determined by extrapolating AC data to zero frequency. In both directions, the log DC – 1/T curves bend slightly. In the high- and low-temperature limits, differential activation energies were derived for measurements [001] of EA 0.45 and 0.35 eV, respectively, and the numbers [001] are very similar. The value of DC [001] with DC(300 K) 2.0 × 10–6 –1cm–1 is by a factor of 2–10 above that measured [001], depending on temperature, which means anisotropic charge transport. Below 350 K, the AC conductivity () (/2=frequency) is enhanced relative to DC for both directions with an increasing difference for rising frequencies on lowering the temperature. An approximate power law for () is noted at higher frequencies and low temperatures with () s, which is frequently observed on amorphous and disordered semiconductors. Scaling of () data is possible with reference to DC, which results in a quasi-universal curve for different temperatures. An attempt was made to discuss DC and AC results in the light of theoretical models of hopping charge transport and of a possible Fe2+ Fe3+ electron hopping mechanism. The thermopower (Seebeck effect) in the temperature range 360 K < T <770 K is negative in both directions. There is a linear – 1/T relationship above 400 K with activation energy E 0.030 eV [001] and 0.070 eV [001]. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to detect Fe2+ in addition to the dominating concentration of Fe3+.

Monomineralic domains of chlorite, corundum and Cr muscovite coexist over a kilometer scale within ultramafic schists of the Harare greenstone belt (2.73 Ga). This exotic lithological association includes the conjunction of some of the most aluminous (Al2O388 wt%) and potassic (K2O10 wt%) rocks known. The paragenetic sequence developed from chloritecorundumcorundum+ diaspore: Cr muscovite variably overprinted both the corundum and chloritite domains. Terminal stages were marked by sporadic production of andalusite+quartz, and finally margarite.Chlorite (Cr2O3=0.31–2.65 wt%), corundum (0.79–2.66 wt%), and diaspore are all Cr-rich varieties. The chromian (Cr2O33.86 wt%) paragonitic muscovite incorporates up to 17% of the paragonite molecule, and significant Mg and Fe substitutions. The suite of rocks are characterized by chondritic Ti/Zr ratios (–x=107), systematically enhanced Cr (up to 14000 ppm) and Ni (up to 1200 ppm) abundances, low levels of the alteration-insensitive incompatible elements Th, Ta, Nb. Chlorite, corundum and Cr muscovite represent progressive stages in the incremental metasomatic alteration of a komatiite precursor. Mass balance calculations, constrained by the isochemical behaviour of Ti, Zr and Hf reveal that the komatiite chloritite transformation involved volumetric contractions of 60% by hydrothermal leaching of Si, Fe, Mn, Ca and Na. Reaction of chloritite to corundum involved further volumetric reductions of 50% due to essentially quantitative loss of Si, Fe, Mn, Mg, K and Ca. Conversion of corundum to muscovite required additions of Si, K, Fe, Mn, Mg, Rb and Ba at 50–200% dilation. K, Rb, Ba, Li and Cs are enriched by up to 2×103 over background abundances in ultramafic rocks, and the suite is also enriched in B, Se, Te, Bi, As, Sb and Au. REE were extensively leached during chloritite-corundum stages, whereas LREE additions accompany development of muscovite. Ti, Zr, Hf and Al were all concentrated by selective leaching of mobile components, but absolute additions of Al accompanied development of the corundum domains due to Al precipitation in response to depressurization.Corundum ( 18O=3.5–4.8), muscovite ( 18O=6.7–7.5) and chlorite (4.5–5.6) are isotopically uniform and formed at 380–520° C from a fluid where 18O=5.6–6.9. The corundum is 18O depleted relative to either igneous or anatectic counterparts (Ocor=7.6–8.2), or to gibbsitic laterites ( 18O=12–17).Previous genetic schemes involving metamorphism of exhalites or bauxite, or Si-undersaturation of magmas, can all be ruled out from the data. The chloritite, corundum, Cr-muscovite association represents sequential alteration products of ultramafic rocks by high temperature, low pH hydrothermal solutions carrying LIL-elements, and in which excursions of pH and/or degree of quartz undersaturation account for the mineralogical transitions. A deep level acid epithermal system, or fluid advection across steep inverted thermal gradients in a thrust regime could account for required hydrothermal conditions.

Aenigmatite, sodic pyroxene and arfvedsonite occur as interstitial minerals in metaluminous to weakly peralkaline syenite patches in alkali dolerite, Morotu, Sakhalin. Aenigmatite is zoned from Ca, Al, Fe3+-rich cores to Ti, Na, Mn, Si-rich rims reflecting the main substitutions Fe2+Ti4+Fe3+, NaSiCaAl and Mn2+Fe2+. Aenigmatite replaces aegirine and ilmenite supporting the existence of a no-oxide field in — T space. In one case aenigmatite has apparently formed by reaction between ilmenite and arfvedsonite. Titanian aegirine (up to 3.0 wt% TiO2) and Fe-chlorite may replace aenigmatite. Sodic pyroxene occurs as zoned crystals with cores of aegirine-augite rimmed by aegirine and in turn by pale green aegirine containing 93 mol% NaFe3+Si2O6. Additional substitution of the type NaAlCaFe2+ is indicated by significant amounts (up to 6 mol%) of NaAlSi2O6. Arfvedsonite is zoned with rims enriched in Na, Fe and depleted in Ca which parallels the variation of these elements in the sodic pyroxenes. The high peralkalinity of the residual liquid from which the mafic phases formed resulted from the early crystallization of microperthite (which makes up the bulk of the syenites) leading to an increase in the Na2O/(Na2O+K2O) and (Na2O+K2O)/Al2O3 ratios of the remaining interstitial liquid which is also enriched in Ti, Fe, and Mn. Bulk composition of the melt, , temperature and volatile content were all important variables in determining the composition and stability of the peralkaline silicates. in the residual liquid appears to have been buffered by arfvedsonite-aegirine and later by the arfvedsonite-aenigmatite and aenigmatite-aegirine equilibria under conditions of a no-oxide field. An increase in , above that of the alkali buffer reactions, is inferred by an increase of Ti and Mn in aenigmatite rims. The latest postmagmatic vapour crystallization stage of the syenites is marked by extremely low which may have been facilitated by exsolution of a gas phase. Low is supported by the replacement of aenigmatite by titanian aegirine, and the formation of rare Ti-rich garnet with a very low (Ti4++Fe3+)/(Ti+Fe) ratio of 0.51, associated with leucoxene alteration of ilmenite.

The Ordovician volcano-sedimentary succession of Erquy (northern Brittany) is made of immature sediments thermally metamorphosed at the contact of intruding basic sills. Pillow lavas constitute the upper part of the sequence. The trace element geochemistry of sills and pillow lavas suggests that they were derived from a tholeiitic source located beneath a passive margin. This volcanic sequence was metamorphosed under low to moderate greenschist facies conditions. In this study the direction and amplitude of chemical and isotopic fluxes in the basalt-sediment-water system were established and the oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of the aqueous fluid that reacted with the volcanic rocks were characterized. Cationic thermometry on chlorites and isotopic thermometry on plagioclase-chlorite pairs indicate closure metamorphic temperatures in the range 200–250°C for the basaltic sills. Stable isotope compositions of iron-rich chlorites (18O-5.5; D from-60 to-50) and plagioclases (18O from +9 to +10) reveal that the source of the fluid was certainly seawater. The 18O variations within the sills are strongly correlated with the rate of progress of the main metamorphic reaction:clinopyroxene+plagioclase+ilmenite chlorite+albite+epidote+quartz+sphene that produced major element mobility at the scale of the volcanosedimentary sequence. Calculation of elemental fluxes by mass balance combined with oxygen isotopic compositions of basalts shows that the highest water-rock ratios (1) were at sill-sediment boundaries and within pillow lavas at the top of the pile. The volcanosedimentary sequence of Erquy was a net sink for Na and a source for Ca. No Mg uptake could be detected whereas the hydrothermal alteration of the sediments released Fe, Si, and K trapped by the volcanic rocks. The 18O value of the fluid reacting with sills appears to have shifted no more than +4 after percolation at low temperature through immature sediments (18O12). The Erquy volcano-sedimentary sequence represents a marine hydrothermal system dominated by low-temperature exchange which allowed a general 18O-enrichment of the volcanic rocks and a 18O-depletion of sediments.

Isotopic compositions were determined for quartz, sericite and bulk rock samples surrounding the Uwamuki no. 4 Kuroko ore body, Kosaka, Japan. 18O values of quartz from Siliceous Ore (S.O.), main body of Black Ore B.O.) and the upper layer of B.O. are fairly uniform, +8.7 to +10.5. Formation temperatures calculated from fractionation of 18O between sericite and quartz from B.O. and upper S.O. are 250° to 300° C. The ore-forming fluids had 18O values of +1 and D values of –10, from isotope compositions of quartz and sericite.Tertiary volcanic rocks surrounding the ore deposits at Kosaka have uniform 18O values, +8.1±1.0 (n=50), although their bulk chemical compositions are widely varied because of different degrees of alteration. White Rhyolite, which is an intensely altered rhyolite occurring in close association with the Kuroko ore bodies, has also uniform 18O values, +7.9±0.9 (n=19). Temperatures of alteration are estimated to be around 300° C from the oxygen isotope fractionation between quartz and sericite. Paleozoic basement rocks phyllite and chert, have high 18O values, +18 and +19. The Sasahata formation of unknown age, which lies between Tertiary and Paleozoic formations, has highly variable 18O, +8 to +16 (n=4). High 18O values of the basement rocks and the sharp difference in 18O at their boundary suggest that the hydrothermal system causing Kuroko mineralization was mainly confined within permeable Tertiary rocks. D values of altered Tertiary volcanic rocks are highly variable ranging from –34 to –64% (n=12). The variation of D does not correlate with change of chemical composition, 18O values, nor distance from the ore deposits. The relatively high D values of the altered rocks indicate that the major constituent of the hydrothermal fluid was sea water. However, another fluid having lower D must have also participated. The fluid could be evolved sea water modified by interaction with rocks and the admixture of magmatic fluid. The variation in D may suggest that sea water mixed dispersively with the fluid.

34S-values are given for 67 sulfide and 16 barite specimens from the Pb-Zn-deposit Grund (Harz mountains, W-Germany). In the central part of the deposit the sulfide 's of the first major mineralization (phase II) range from: ZnS +4 to +6 and PbS +2 to +4. The sulfides of the second major mineralization (phase III) are depleted in 34S and range from: ZnS +2 to +4, PbS –1,4 to 3. The sulfides at the western end of the vein system are heavier; the phase II minerals ranging from: ZnS +6 to 10 and PbS +4 to 7. The mean -difference between co-existing ZnS and PbS in phase II is 1,8, in phase III 3. This indicates lowering of temperature of formation for the phase III ore. Four models have been set up in order to explain the observed -variation. Barites with rather uniform 's from +11 to +14,5 are probably affected by descendent solutions from overlying sulfate sediments of Permian age.

Summary The stable isotope geochemistry of native gold-bearing quartz veins contained within low-grade metasedimentary strata in the central Canadian Rocky Mountains, British Columbia is examined. The data augment previous geological and geochemical studies.Vein pyrite 34S values cluster between + 14.2 and + 16.3 (CDT). Coeval galenas exhibit 34S values between + 11.4 and 13.3. Pyrite-galena geothermometry reveals a mean temperature of mineralization of 300 ± 43°C. Comparison of 34S values for the vein pyrites, with values for pyrite porphyroblasts in country rocks suggests that vein sulfur was probably derived from the host rocks.18O(SMOW) values of host quartzites and pelites cluster between + 12.0 and + 13.5, and + 9.5 and + 10.5, respectively. Auriferous vein quartz exhibits 18O values between + 13.0 and + 15.0. Veins were likely deposited from fluids undergoing post-peak metamorphic cooling.Vein inclusion fluids exhibit values between –105 and –124 (SMOW). Combined O-H-isotope data are most compatible with a source fluid involving chemically- and isotopically-evolved meteoric waters. The critical role of H-isotope data in the evaluation of source fluids for such mesothermal gold lodes is stressed. The paucity of H-isotope data pertaining to the study of lode gold deposits in similar low-grade metasedimentary domains suggests that the involvement of meteoric waters may at times be overlooked.

Partition of Fe2+ and Mg between coexisting (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 spinel and (Mg, Fe)SiO3 pyroxene was investigated at pressures 80 and 90 kbar and at temperatures 840 and 1050° C, using tetrahedral-anvil type of high pressure apparatus. Olivine-spinel solid solution equilibria in the system Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4 were discussed in the light of the partition reaction. Partition of Fe2+ and Mg in both olivine-spinel and pyroxene-spinel systems can not be regarded as that between ideal solid solutions. By applying the simple solution model for the partition of Fe2+ and Mg, sign of the heat of mixing was estimated to be positive for all olivine, spinel and pyroxene. Relative concentration of Fe2+ in spinel in the pyroxene-spinel system is likely to cause some change in the chemical composition of modified spinel () or spinel () in the transition zone of the mantle. A considerable change is also expected in the transition pressure of to ( + ) and ( + ) to .Presented at the symposium Recent Advances in the Studies of Rocks and Minerals at High Pressures and Temperatures held in Montreal, 1972.
Determination of the sulfur isotopic composition in some sulfide and sulfate minerals of the lead zinc deposit, Bleiberg/Kreuth, Carinthia
Summary Results of sulfur isotope analyses on 6 sulfides and 4 sulfates from Bleiberg/Kreuth (Austria) range from –6.9 to –25.9 34S (in sulfides) and from +14.8 to +18.9 34S (in sulfates). A large range of sulfide sulfur isotope fractionation with appreciable light sulfur probably indicates a bacterial sulfur source in sulfide precipiation. The sulfate sulfur plots in the range of Mesozoic (post-Skytian) seawater sulfur isotopic composition.

Oxygen-isotope compositions have been measured for whole-rock and mineral samples of host and hydrothermally altered rocks from three massive sulfide deposits, Centennial (CL), Spruce Point (SP), and Anderson Lake (AL), in the Flin Flon — Snow Lake belt, Manitoba. Wholerock 18O values of felsic metavolcanic, host rocks (+8.5 to +16.1) are higher than those of altered rocks from the three deposits. The 18O values of altered rocks are lower in the chlorite zone and muscovite zone-I (CL=+ 5.3; SP=+5.4 to +8.3; AL= +3.7 to +5.9) than in the gradational zone (CL= +9.9 to +11.7; SP= +8.4 to +9.8; AL= + 6.6 to +7.7). Muscovite schist (Muscovite Zone-II) enveloping the Anderson Lake ore body has 18O values of +7.2 to +8.3. Quartz, biotite, muscovite, and chlorite separated from the altered rocks have lower 18O values compared to the same minerals separated from the host rocks. However, isotopic fractionation between mineral-pairs is generally similar in both host and altered rocks. It is interpreted that differences in the oxygen-isotope compositions of the altered and host rocks were produced prior to metamorphism, during hydrothermal alteration related to ore-deposition. Isotopic homogenization during metamorphism occurred on a grain-to-grain scale, over no more than a few meters. The whole-rock 18O values did not change significantly during metamorphism. The generally lower 18O values of altered rocks, the Cu-rich nature of the ore and the occurrence of the muscovite zone-II at Anderson Lake are consistent with the presence of higher temperature hydrothermal fluids at Anderson Lake than at the Centennial and Spruce Point deposits.

Stibnite mineralisation in the antimony province of New England can be divided into Central type ores (veins of stibnite + quartz ± berthierite) and Peripheral type ores of stibnite + quartz + native antimony ± berthierite. The Central stibnites have 34SCDT values of –5±2 (1) which may represent equilibrium precipitation from mantle sulfur at about 200°C. Peripheral stibnites have 34S values between 0 and –25, with a large group at 0±2. They represent precipitation from a limited supply of mantle sulfur and the acquisition of sedimentary sulfur. We consider that the different ore types were produced from distinct ore solutions derived from two immiscible melts. These originated in the deep mantle, were mobilised by tectonic activity and supplied the antimony and most of the sulfur to the ores.

Celadonite from the northwestern Mojave Desert area of California was examined by detailed Mössbauer spectroscopy at temperatures from 10 K to 400 K. In addition to the predominant Fe3+ doublet with isomer shift 0.4 mm s–1 and quadrupole splitting 0.4 mm s–1, another Fe3+ doublet with 0.4, 1.2 mm/s and two Fe2+ doublets with 1.1, 1.7, 2.7 mm s–1 at 300 K were distinguished. The minor Fe3+ component is ascribed to dehydroxylated surface sites. Most of the remaining Fe(90%) is M2 cis-OH octahedral in an ordered M+–M2+ array. However, about 10% is M1 trans-OH Fe2+. Isomer shift vs. T gives Debye temperatures of 570 K for Fe3+ in M2 and 380 K for both Fe2+ sites, indicating greater vibrational freedom for Fe2+. Quadrupole splitting vs. T for Fe2+ gives a valence electronic energy splitting of 760 cm–1 between the ground and first excited state for M2. The M1 sites have a more drastic variation in vs. T which indicates not only a lower first excited state but a rhombic distortion at these sites. A proposed explanation is a neighboring M2 site vacancy. The soil clay formed from this celadonite, which is mostly Fe-rich smectite, was also studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. About half the Fe2+ has been oxidized in the clay, but the isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings are essentially the same as in the original celadonite. A texture orientation in the clay absorber was detected by measuring the absorber at 55° to the source radiation. This texture effect produces asymmetric doublets in the usual 90° measurement.

Sulfur isotope analyses were made on 14 alunites from volcanic and sedimentary rocks widely different in chemistry and age from southern Tuscany and northern Latium, central Italy. The 34S values range from +0.7 to +9.6, and appear not to be related to the nature of the host rock. Geological and isotopic evidence suggests that all the alunites formed by supergenic oxidation of sulfides. Sulfides occurring with alunites in the volcanic rocks of Latium can be divided into an isotopically light group of probably magmatic origin (34S=–1.5 to +3.4) and a heavy one with 34S=+6.0 to +10.3, tentatively interpreted as deposited by hydrothermal fluids that leached sulfides of similar 34S/32S from the deep basement. Such an interpretation is consistent with recent studies indicating that in the perityrrhenian belt of Latium exists a continuation, at depth, of the Tuscan stratigraphic series, rich in sulfides with 34 from +6 to +12.
