The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) imaged the sky in the Ultraviolet (UV) for almost a decade, delivering the first sky surveys at these wavelengths. Its database contains far-UV (FUV, λ eff~1528 Å) and near-UV (NUV, λ eff~2310 Å) images of most of the sky, including deep UV-mapping of extended galaxies, over 200 million source measurements, and more than 100,000 low-resolution UV spectra. The GALEX archive will remain a long-lasting resource for statistical studies of hot stellar objects, QSOs, star-forming galaxies, nebulae and the interstellar medium. It provides an unprecedented road-map for planning future UV instrumentation and follow-up observing programs in the UV and at other wavelengths. We review the characteristics of the GALEX data, and describe final catalogs and available tools, that facilitate future exploitation of this database. We also recall highlights from the science results uniquely enabled by GALEX data so far.  相似文献

Observations of the Sun with a 3840 Å interference filter of 12 Å full-width at half-maximum are compared with broad band filtergrams at 5300 Å and 6103 Å magnetograms. The limit for detecting faculae by the three techniques is compared. An improvement in detecting faculae at 3840 Å can be obtained by time-averaged photographs with the time-averaging done either at the telescope or in the darkroom. The former method has certain disadvantages. The 3840 Å filter can show the presence of faculae near the limb much better than white-light photographs or magnetograms. This feature makes 3840 Å filtergrams useful in conjunction with solar oblateness studies. This research was supported by company funds of The Aerospace Corporation.  相似文献

Analysis of bright features in 3840 Å and H shows that forevery Ellerman bomb (H-0.9 Å) there is a cospatial brightening in the 3840 Å network. We give properties of these bright points in both wavelengths as well as describe: (1) the appearance, and subsequent separation, of new elements in the 3840 Å network and (2) the direct transition from a 3840 Å bright point to a new sunspot.  相似文献

The GALEX mission is performing imaging and spectroscopic surveys of the sky at Ultraviolet wavelengths, and providing unprecedented sky maps in two UV bands, far-UV and near-UV, and catalogs of UV sources. I will describe the major surveys accomplished so far, and results in investigating the nature of the UV sources. The UV surveys, linked to a multi-wavelength archive, offer great sensitivity to detect and characterize several classes of astrophysical objects, such as low-redshift QSOs, star-forming galaxies, and white dwarfs (WD) in the Milky Way. Efforts towards obtaining a significant census of WDs from GALEX imaging data are described in particular. A dedicated, deep survey of nearby galaxies provides a snapshot of their recent star formation, shedding new light on the process of star formation and its modalities in different environments and conditions. Deep GALEX data revealed young stellar populations in extreme outskirts of spiral galaxies, previously thought to be stable against star formation given their low density. UV measurements for millions of nearby and distant galaxies map the history and probe the causes of star formation in the Universe over the redshift range z=0–2.  相似文献

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) was successfully launched on April 28, 2003. Over the last 7 years, the GALEX mission has expanded our understanding of the process of star formation and galaxy evolution. GALEX data, consisting of far-UV (1344-1786A) and near-UV (1771-2831A) imaging over most of the sky, and grism spectroscopy, are available to the entire astronomical community and to the general public via the Multi-mission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST). The main characteristics and access tools to the large data archive (16TB) are presented. Groups within the GALEX Science Team, and the MAST archive teams, have undertaken complementary projects to conduct all-sky searches for time-variable and transient sources within GALEX data (e.g. Welsh et al. in Astron. J. 130:823, 2005; Wheatley et al. in Astron. J. 136:259, 2008). Results and tools for variability searches developed by MAST during this process, will be made available to the general community.  相似文献

We present a new, expanded and improved catalog of Ultraviolet (UV) sources from the GALEX All-Sky Imaging survey: GUVcat_AIS (Bianchi et al. in Astrophys. J. Suppl. Ser. 230:24, 2017). The catalog includes 83 million unique sources (duplicate measurements and rim artifacts are removed) measured in far-UV and near-UV. With respect to previous versions (Bianchi et al. in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 411:2770 2011a, Adv. Space Res. 53:900–991, 2014), GUVcat_AIS covers a slightly larger area, 24,790 square degrees, and includes critical corrections and improvements, as well as new tags, in particular to identify sources in the footprint of extended objects, where pipeline source detection may fail and custom-photometry may be necessary. The UV unique-source catalog facilitates studies of density of sources, and matching of the UV samples with databases at other wavelengths. We also present first results from two ongoing projects, addressing respectively UV variability searches on time scales from seconds to years by mining the GALEX photon archive, and the construction of a database of ~120,000 GALEX UV spectra (range ~1300–3000 Å), including quality and calibration assessment and classification of the grism, hence serendipitous, spectral sources.  相似文献

We present Galaxy Ultraviolet Explorer (GALEX) satellite observations of the SB0 galaxy NGC 4262 where we detect an extended, outer ring studded with UV-bright knots surrounding the galaxy body. Such a structure, not visible at optical wavelengths, is coupled with a ring of atomic (HI) gas. We will show that both star-forming and HI rings surrounding this SB0 galaxy share the same radial distance from the galaxy center and spatial orientation. We also model the kinematics of the ring(s) and of the galaxy body. Their kinematics is not coupled with that of the galaxy stars. We suggest that NGC 4262 has undergone a major gas stripping event in the past that was the origin of the present “necklace” of UV-bright knots.  相似文献

The publication of large photometric surveys and the tools for the cross-identification of their objects open up a possibility for obtaining multicolor photometry of hundreds of millions of objects. This, in turn, makes it possible not only to classify the objects and determine their parameters, but also to measure the interstellar extinction towards them and produce an extinction map for the Milky Way. The aim of this study is to develop a tool for the cross identification of objects in the most well-known surveys and test it in several sky areas. To this end, we implemented an algorithm of fast positional matching of large astronomical catalogs in small (up to one degree) sized areas with filtering of false identification. As a result, we drew in seven 0.1-degree radius areas samples of objects from the DENIS, 2MASS, SDSS, GALEX, and UKIDSS surveys, and performed the cross-identification of these surveys. We compiled the corresponding subcatalogs in the VO Table format. The tool developed as a result of this work can be used to cross-identify objects in arbitrary sky areas for the further classification and determination of stellar parameters, including the measurement of the amount of interstellar extinction.  相似文献

Ultraviolet observations from low Earth orbit (LEO) have to deal with a foreground comprised of airglow and zodiacal light which depend on the look direction and on the date and time of the observation. We have used all-sky observations from the GALEX spacecraft to find that the airglow may be divided into a baseline dependent on the sun angle and a component dependent only on the time from local midnight. The zodiacal light is observable only in the near ultraviolet band (2321 Å) of GALEX and is proportional to the zodiacal light in the visible but with a color of 0.65 indicating that the dust grains are less reflective in the UV.  相似文献

The early days of radio astronomy showed incredibly diverse experimentation in ways to sample the electromagnetic spectrum at radio wavelengths. In addition to obtaining adequate sensitivity by building large collection areas, a primary goal also was to achieve sufficient angular resolution to localize radio sources for multi-wavelength identification. This led to many creative designs and the invention of aperture synthesis and VLBI. Some of the basic telescope types remain to the present day, now implemented across the entire radio spectrum from wavelengths of tens of meters to submillimeter wavelengths. In recent years, as always, there is still the drive for greater sensitivity but a primary goal is now to achieve very large fields of view to complement high resolution and frequency coverage, leading to a new phase of experimentation. This is the “back to the future” aspect of current research and development for next-generation radio telescopes. In this paper I summarize the scientific motivations for development of new technology and telescopes since about 1990 and going forward for the next decade and longer. Relevant elements include highly optimized telescope optics and feed antenna designs, innovative fabrication methods for large reflectors and dipole arrays, digital implementations, and hardware vs. software processing. The emphasis will be on meter and centimeter wavelength telescopes but I include a brief discussion of millimeter wavelengths to put the longer wavelength enterprises into perspective. I do not discuss submillimeter wavelengths because they are covered in other papers.  相似文献

I review the origin of UV-radiation in galaxies of different morphological types. UV-excess in spectra of massive elliptical galaxies which have predominantly old stellar populations is traditionally explained by the contribution of low-mass stars at very late, poorly known stages of evolution—by so called ‘AGB-manqué’ stars or by the population of extended horizontal branch. However recent results from the GALEX survey of a large sample of nearby ellipticals have also demonstrated probable traces of recent star formation in a third of all ellipticals observed. In spiral galaxies extended UV-disks have been discovered by the GALEX; they are certainly illuminated by the current star formation, but what has provoked star formation in the areas of very low gas density, beyond the distribution of older stars, is a puzzle yet. The UV-spectra of starburst galaxies or starforming galactic nuclei are characterized by weak emission lines, if any, quite dissimilar to their optical spectra.  相似文献

The search for fast radio bursts(FRBs) is a hot topic in current radio astronomy studies. In this work, we carry out a single pulse search with a very long baseline interferometry(VLBI) pulsar observation data set using both auto spectrum and cross spectrum search methods. The cross spectrum method, first proposed in Liu et al., maximizes the signal power by fully utilizing the fringe phase information of the baseline cross spectrum. The auto spectrum search method is based on the popular pulsar software package PRESTO, which extracts single pulses from the auto spectrum of each station. According to our comparison, the cross spectrum method is able to enhance the signal power and therefore extract single pulses from data contaminated by high levels of radio frequency interference(RFI), which makes it possible to carry out a search for FRBs in regular VLBI observations when RFI is present.  相似文献

Based on the results of calibrator observations at 13.5-mm and 8.2-mm wavelengths in 1985 and 2005, the dependence of the effective area of the RT-22 CrAO RI antenna on ambient temperature and elevation was determined. The obtained results confirm a high quality of the RT-22 antenna at millimeter wavelengths. A high accuracy of the reflector surface makes it possible to observe at millimeter wavelengths right to 2 mm. At 8.2-mm wavelength, the effective area changes by no more than 5% when the antenna is reinstalled from the zenith to 15° elevation angle. Large antennas, intended to operate at maximum frequencies, should be built either taking into account the climatic conditions of the antenna sites or taking measures to provide thermal stability of the antenna.  相似文献

A critical analysis has been made of solar irradiance in the spectral region covering wavelengths from 100 nm upwards; the absorption characteristics of molecules of oxygen and ozone have been taken into account with a view to the direct application of the results to atmospheric photochemistry. The absorption of radiation by these molecules results in the photodissociation of both of them in the homosphere, and it also makes possible the penetration of solar radiation from the thermosphere, through the mesosphere and the stratosphere, down to the troposphere.Special attention has been given to each of the following spectral regions: Lyman-alpha radiation at 121.6 nm, the O2 Schumann-Runge continuum at wavelengths less than 175 nm, the O2 Schumann-Runge band system from 200 to 175 nm, and the O2 Herzberg continuum at 242.4 nm. For absorption by ozone, the solar spectrum has been analysed in the following regions: the Hartley band at wavelengths less than 310 nm, the Huggins bands at wavelengths above 310 nm and the visible Chappuis bands. Finally, for the photodissociation of O3, particular attention has been given to the transition region (300–320 nm) in which there is a change-over from the production of the excited atom O(1D) to that of the atom in its ground state O(3p).  相似文献

The UV properties of 1152 Markarian galaxies have been investigated based on GALEX data. These objects have been investigated also in other available wavelengths using multi-wavelength data from X-ray to radio. Using our classification for activity types for 779 Markarian galaxies based on SDSS spectroscopy, we have investigated these objects on the GALEX, 2MASS and WISE color-magnitude and color-color diagrams by the location of objects of different activity types and have revealed a number of loci. UV contours overplotted on the optical images revealed additional structures, particularly spiral arms of a number of Markarian galaxies. UV (FUV and NUV) and optical absolute magnitudes and luminosities have been calculated showing graduate transition from AGN to Composites, HIIs and Absorption line galaxies from (average \(M\)) \(-17.56^{m}\) to \(-15.20^{m}\) in FUV, from \(-18.07^{m}\) to \(-15.71^{m}\) in NUV and from AGN to Composites, Absorption line galaxies and HII from \(-21.14^{m}\) to \(-19.42^{m}\) in optical wavelengths and from (average \(L\)) \(7\times10^{9}\) to \(4 \times 10^{8}\) in FUV, from \(1\times 10^{10}\) to \(5\times10^{8}\) in NUV and from AGN to Composites, Absorption line galaxies and HII from \(7\times10^{10}\) to \(1\times10^{10}\) in optical wavelengths.  相似文献

We present empirical machine learning algorithms for measuring the probabilistic photometric redshifts (photo-z) of X-ray quasars based on the quantile regression of ensembles of decision trees. Relying on the data of present-day photometric sky surveys (e.g., SDSS, GALEX, WISE, UKIDSS, 2MASS, FIRST), the proposed methods allow one to make high-quality photo-z point predictions for extragalactic objects, to estimate the confidence intervals, and to reconstruct the full probability distribution functions for all predictions. The quality of photo-z predictions has been tested on samples of X-ray quasars from the 1RASS and 3XMM DR7 surveys, which have spectroscopic redshift measurements in the SDSS DR14Q catalog. The proposed approaches have shown the following accuracy (the metrics are the normalized median absolute deviation σNMAD and the percentage of outliers n>0.15): σNMAD, n>0.15 = 0.043, 12% (SDSS + WISE), 0.037, 8% (SDSS + WISE + GALEX) and 0.032, 8.6% (SDSS + WISE + GALEX + UKIDSS) on the RASS sample; σNMAD, n>0.15 = 0.054, 13% (SDSS + WISE), 0.045, 7.6% (SDSS + WISE + GALEX), and 0.037, 6.6% (SDSS + WISE + GALEX + UKIDSS) on the 3XMM sample. The presented photo-z algorithms will become an important tool for analyzing the multi-wavelength data on X-ray quasars in the forthcoming Spectrum–Roentgen–Gamma sky survey.  相似文献

We present a joint analysis of near-ultraviolet ( NUV ) data from the GALEX ( Galaxy Evolution Explorer ) mission and (optical) colour profiles for a sample of seven brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the Canadian Cluster Comparison Project. We find that every BCG, which has a blue rest-frame UV colour, also shows a blue core in its optical colour profile. Conversely, BCGs that lack blue cores and show monotonic colour gradients typical of old elliptical galaxies are red in the UV. We interpret this as evidence that the NUV enhancement in the blue BCGs is driven by recent star formation and not from old evolved stellar populations such as horizontal branch stars. Furthermore, the UV enhancement cannot be from an active galactic nuclei (AGN) because the spatial extent of the blue cores is significantly larger than the possible contamination region due to a massive black hole. The recent star formation in the blue BCGs typically has an age less than 200 Myr and contributes mass fractions of less than a per cent. Although the sample studied here is small, we demonstrate, for the first time , a one-to-one correspondence between blue cores in elliptical galaxies (in particular BCGs) and a NUV enhancement observed using GALEX . The combination of this one-to-one correspondence and the consistently young age of recent star formation, coupled with additional correlations with the host cluster's X-ray properties, strongly suggests that the star formation is fuelled by gas cooling out of the intracluster medium. In turn, this implies that any AGN heating of the intracluster medium in massive clusters only acts to reduce the magnitude of the cooling flow and once this flow starts, it is nearly always active. Collectively, these results suggest that AGN feedback in present-day BCGs, while important, cannot be as efficient as suggested by the recent theoretical model by proposed by De Lucia et al.  相似文献

We present GALEX near-ultraviolet ( NUV ) and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey J -band photometry for red-sequence galaxies in local clusters. We define quiescent samples according to a strict emission threshold, removing galaxies with very recent star formation. We analyse the NUV – J colour–magnitude relation (CMR) and find that the intrinsic scatter is an order of magnitude larger than for the analogous optical CMR (∼0.35 rather than 0.05 mag), in agreement with previous studies. Comparing the NUV – J colours with spectroscopically derived stellar population parameters, we find a strong  (>5.5σ)  correlation with metallicity, only a marginal trend with age, and no correlation with the α/Fe ratio. We explore the origin of the large scatter and conclude that neither aperture effects nor the UV upturn phenomenon contribute significantly. We show that the scatter could be attributed to simple 'frosting' by either a young or a low-metallicity subpopulation.  相似文献

Many brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at the centres of X-ray selected clusters exhibit clear evidence for recent star formation. However, studies of BCGs in optically selected clusters show that star formation is not enhanced when compared to control samples of non-BCGs of similar stellar mass. Here, we analyse a sample of 113 BCGs in low-redshift  ( z < 0.1)  , optically selected clusters, a matched control sample of non-BCGs, and a smaller sample of BCGs in X-ray selected clusters. We convolve the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images of the BCGs to match the resolution of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer ( GALEX ) data and we measure UV-optical colours in their inner and outer regions. We find that optically selected BCGs exhibit smaller scatter in optical colours and redder inner  NUV − r   colours than the control galaxies, indicating that they are a homogenous population with very little ongoing star formation. The BCGs in the X-ray selected cluster sample span a similar range in optical colours, but have bluer  NUV − r   colours. Among X-ray selected BCGs, those located in clusters with central cooling times of less than 1 Gyr are significantly bluer than those located in clusters where the central gas cooling times are long. Our main conclusion is that the location of a galaxy at the centre of its halo is not sufficient to determine whether or not it is currently forming stars. One must also have information about the thermodynamic state of the gas in the core of the halo.  相似文献
