Problems of geodynamics, tectonics, and metallogeny of orogens
This is an overview of papers published in the present volume of Russian Geology and Geophysics (Geologiya i Geofizika), a special issue that covers presentations at the International Conference “Geodynamic Evolution, Tectonics, and Metallogeny of Orogens”, held on 28–30 June 2010 in Novosibirsk (http://altay2010.igm.nsc.ru). The workshop concerned the general evolution of the Central Asian orogenic system, with a special focus on continental growth, history of oceans and continental margins, and role of plumes in accretionary-collisional tectonics and metallogeny. The discussed papers are grouped in three sections: 1. General issues of geodynamics and geodynamic evolution; 2. Role of mantle plumes in tectonics, magmatism, and metallogeny; 3. Regional tectonic and geodynamic problems of Asia. The synthesis of data reported at the workshop demonstrates critical importance of mantle plumes for the evolution of the Paleoasian ocean and for orogenic processes in Central Asia.In addition to three large pulses of continental growth at about 2900–2700, 1900–1700, and 900–700 Ma, three orogenic stages have been distinguished in the geological history of Eurasia: Late Cambrian–Ordovician (510–470 Ma), Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous (380–320 Ma), and Permian–Triassic (285–230 Ma). In the evolution of the Central Asian orogen, these stages were associated with events of ultramafic-mafic and bimodal plume magmatism which promoted translithospheric strike-slip faulting. Plume magmatism was an active agent in ocean opening when the Paleotethys, Ural, Ob–Zaisan, and Turkestan basins appeared while the Late Cambrian–Ordovician orogen was forming in Central Asia (North Kazakhstan, Altai–Sayan, Tuva, and Baikal areas). Closure of the Ob–Zaisan ocean and collision of the Kazakhstan–Baikal continent with Siberia in the Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous was coeval with the maximum opening of the Turkestan ocean, possibly, as a consequence of plume activity. The Tarim (285–275 Ma) and Siberian (250–230 Ma) superplume events corresponded in time to closure of the Ural ocean and opening of the Meso- and Neotethys, as well as to major metallogenic events.

In the Late Cambrian-Ordovician, Gondwana-derived microcontinents such as Kokchetav, Altai-Mongolian, Tuva-Mongolian, and Barguzin, as well as the Kazakhstan-Tuva-Mongolian island arc or a system of island arcs were involved in intense accretion-collision processes in similar geodynamic settings on a vast territory of Central Asia — from West Kazakhstan to Lake Baikal. The processes were likely to be the result of a large rebuilding of the Earth’s crust possibly related to the increased mantle impact on the lithosphere as they were simultaneous to the opening of the Uralian and Mongolian-Okhotsk (Turkestan) Oceans. The 970–850 Ma breakup of Rodinia and the 760–700 Ma important tectonic events were followed by the Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician plume magmatism impulse at 500–480 Ma, which led to the opening of new oceans and accelerated the accretion of the Gondwana-derived blocks to the island arc and subsequent formation of an extended — more than 6000 km long — Kazakhstan-Baikal orogenic belt.

Granites from the Tunka pluton of the Sarkhoi complex, located in the eastern Tunka bald mountains (East Sayan), have been dated at the Middle Ordovician (462.6 ± 7.8 Ma) by LA ICP MS. The granites of the Sarkhoi complex within the studied area cut a foldthrust structure consisting of deformed fragments of the Vendian (Ediacaran)–Early Cambrian cover of the Tuva–Mongolian microcontinent (Upper Shumak metaterrigenous formation, Gorlyk carbonate formation). The red-colored conglomerates and sandstones of the Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous(?) Sagan-Sair Formation overlie the eroded surface of the Tunka pluton granites in the eastern Tunka bald mountains. The Sagan-Sair Formation, in turn, is overlain along a low-angle thrust by a group of tectonic sheets, which comprises the volcanic and carbonate sediments of the Tolta Formation, biotitic schists, and plagiogneisses with garnet amphibolite bodies. Two nappe generations have been revealed on the basis of the described geologic relationships, the Middle Ordovician age of the Tunka pluton granites, and numerous Late Paleozoic Ar–Ar dates of syntectonic minerals from the metamorphic rocks in the area. The first thrusting stage was pre-Middle Ordovician, and the second, Late Carboniferous–Permian. The Lower Paleozoic thrust structure resulted from the accretion of the Tuva–Mongolian microcontinent to the Siberian Platform. The Late Paleozoic nappes resulted from intracontinental orogeny and the reactivation of an Early Paleozoic accretionary belt under the effect of the Late Paleozoic collisional events.

On the basis of stratigraphical and geological data, paleogeographical and palinspastic reconstructions of the Kazakhstan Paleozoides were done; their multistage geodynamic evolution was considered; their tectonic zoning was proposed. The main stages are described: the initiation of the Cambrian and Ordovician island arcs; the development of the Kazakhstan accretionary–collisional composite continent in the Late Ordovician as a result of continental subduction and the amalgamation of Gondwana blocks with the island arcs (a long granitoid collisional belt also formed in this period); the development of the Devonian and Carboniferous–Permian active margins of the composite continent and its tectonic destruction in the Late Paleozoic. In the Late Ordovician, compensated terrigenous and volcanosedimentary complexes formed within Kazakhstania and developed in the Silurian. The Sakmarian, Tagil, Eastern Urals, and Stepnyak volcanic arcs formed at the boundaries with the Ural, Turkestan, and Junggar–Balkhash Oceans. In the late Silurian, Kazakhstania collided with the island arcs of the Turkestan and Ob'–Zaisan Oceans, with the formation of molasse and granite belts in the northern Tien Shan and Chingiz. This was followed by the development of the Devonian and Carboniferous–Permian active margins of the composite continent and the inland formation of the Early Devonian rift-related volcanosedimentary rocks, Middle–Late Devonian volcanic molasse, Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous rift-related volcanosedimentary rocks, terrigenous–carbonate shelf sediments, and carbonaceous lake–bog sediments, and the Middle–Late Carboniferous clastic rocks of closed basins. In the Permian, plume magmatism took place on the southern margin of the Kazakhstan composite continent. It was simultaneous with the formation of red-colored molasse and the tectonic destruction of the Kazakhstan Paleozoides as a result of a collision between the East European and Kazakhstan–Baikal continents.

Early Paleozoic magmatism of the Tannuola terrane located in the northern Central Asian Orogenic Belt is important to understanding the transition from subduction to post-collision settings. In this study, we report in situ zircon U-Pb ages, whole rock geochemistry, and Sr-Nd isotopic data from the mafic and granitic rocks of the eastern Tannuola terrane to better characterize their petrogenesis and to investigate changing of the tectonic setting and geodynamic evolution. Zircon U-Pb ages reveal three magmatic episodes for about 60 Ma from ∼510 to ∼450 Ma, that can be divided into the late Cambrian (∼510–490 Ma), the Early Ordovician (∼480–470 Ma) and the Middle-Late Ordovician (∼460–450 Ma) stages. The late Cambrian episode emplaced the mafic, intermediate and granitic rocks with volcanic arc affinity. The late Cambrian mafic rocks of the Tannuola terrane may originate from melting of mantle source that contain asthenosphere and subarc enriched mantle metasomatized by melts derived from sinking oceanic slab. Geochemical and isotopic compositions indicate the late Cambrian intermediate-granitic rocks are most consistent with an origin from a mixed source including fractionation of mantle-derived magmas and crustal-derived components. The Early Ordovician episode reveal bimodal intrusions containing mafic rocks and adakite-like granitic rocks implying the transition from a thinner to a thicker lower crust. The Early Ordovician mafic rocks are formed as a result of high degree melting of mantle source including dominantly depleted mantle and subordinate mantle metasomatized by fluid components while coeval granitic rocks were derived from partial melting of the high Sr/Y mafic rocks. The latest Middle-Late Ordovician magmatic episode emplaced high-K calc-alkaline ferroan granitic rocks that were formed through the partial melting the juvenile Neoproterozoic sources. These three episodes of magmatism identified in the eastern Tannuola terrane are interpreted as reflecting the transition from subduction to post-collision settings during the early Paleozoic. The emplacement of voluminous magmatic rocks was induced by several stages of asthenospheric upwelling in various geodynamic settings. The late Cambrian episode of magmatism was triggered by the slab break-off while subsequent Early Ordovician episode followed the switch to a collisional setting with thickening of the lower crust and the intrusion of mantle-induced bimodal magmatism. During the post-collisional stage, the large-scale lithospheric delamination provides the magma generation for the Middle-Late Ordovician granitic rocks.

According to the new geological, geochronological, and structural data, the Tunka bald mountains (East Sayan) have a nappe structure, which formed in the Late Carboniferous–Early Permian. The deformations have been dated by the 40Ar–39Ar method on the basis of syntectonic micas and amphiboles, whose structural and spatial positions have been determined in oriented thin sections. The geometrical analysis of macro- and microstructures has revealed three development stages of the structures, which followed one another in progressive deformation. The first (thrust-fault) stage (316–310 Ma) comprised a group of N-verging thrust sheets. In the second (fold deformation) stage (305–303 Ma), they were folded. The third (strike-slip fault) stage (286 Ma) comprised high-angle shears, along which V-shaped blocks were squeezed westward from the most compressed areas. All the structures developed under near-N–S-trending compression. The thrusting in the Tunka bald mountains was coeval with the major shear structures in the eastern Central Asian Fold Belt (Main Sayan Fault, Kurai, Northeastern, and Irtysh crumpled zones, etc.). Also, it was simultaneous with the formation of continental-margin calc-alkalic and shoshonite series (305–278 Ma) as well as that of the alkali and alkali-feldspar syenites and granites (281–278 Ma) of the Tarim mantle plume in the Angara–Vitim pluton, located near and east of the studied region. Thus, the simultaneous development of the Late Paleozoic structures, active-margin structures, and plume magmatism in southern Siberia might have resulted from the global geodynamic events caused by the interaction between the tectonic plates which formed the Central Asian Fold Belt.

The paper reports major evolutionary trends of Paleozoic magmatism in the Urals in relation to the closure of the oceanic basin and associated subduction, obduction, and collision. An attempt is undertaken to use these data as a basis for reproducing the geodynamic and thermal regime during various stages of the regional geological evolution. Distinctive compositional features of the rocks, the discrete character of magmatism reflecting changes in the geodynamic environments, and the transition from predominantly mantle sources of magmatism (at 460-380 Ma) to mantle-crustal (at 360-310 Ma) and finally crustal (290-250 Ma) ones, alternating epochs of relatively “dry” and “hydrous” mantle magmatism at 460-430 Ma and the “hydrous” type of later magmatism make it possible to reproduce the thermal regime of the orogen. During the intense low-hydrous basite magmatism (460-430 Ma), the temperature in the magma generation region was 1300-1100°C and decreased to 1100-900°C during predominantly hydrous magmatism (425-400 Ma). The P-T parameters of hydrous anatexis (360-310 Ma) that gave rise to tonalites and granodiorites were 7-9 kbar and 800 ± 50°C; they constrain the maximum temperature in the lower crust. The next stage of the hydrous anatexis of tonalites and granodiorites resulted in intense granite-forming processes (290-250 Ma) and occurred at pressures close to 5-6 kbar and temperatures of 700 ± 50°C. In the situation of the adiabatic heat transfer with fluids, the minimum temperatures in the upper mantle in the Ural suprasubduction epioceanic mobile belt at a depth of approximately 80 km can be provisionally estimated as follows: 1300 ± 100°C at 450-425 Ma, 1100 =- 100°C at 425-400 Ma, and 900 ± 100°C at 375-250 Ma. Data reported in the paper testify that the temperature in the upper mantle and crust of the Ural Mobile Belt was 150-200°C lower than in neighboring oceanic and continental areas, and this places the Urals among orogens of the “cold” type (Maruyama et al.,2007).

We discuss the potential geodynamic connections between Paleozoic arc development along the flanks of the interior (e.g. the Iapetus and Rheic) oceans and the exterior Paleopacific Ocean. Paleozoic arcs in the Iapetus and Rheic oceanic realms are preserved in the Appalachian–Caledonide and Variscan orogens, and in the Paleopacific Ocean realm they are preserved in the Terra Australis Orogen. Potential geodynamic connections are suggested by paleocontinental reconstructions showing Cambrian–Early Ordovician contraction of the exterior ocean as the interior oceans expanded, and subsequent Paleozoic expansion of the exterior oceans while the interior oceans contracted. Subduction initiated in the eastern segment of Iapetus at ca. 515 Ma and Early to Middle Ordovician orogenesis along the flanks of this ocean is highlighted by arc–continent collisions and ophiolite obductions. Over a similar time interval, subduction and orogenesis took place in the exterior ocean and included formation of the Macquarie arc in the Tasmanides of Eastern Australia and the Famatina arc and correlatives in the periphery of the proto-Andean margin of Gondwana. Major changes in the style of subduction (from retreating to advancing) in interior oceans occurred during the Silurian, following accretion of the peri-Gondwanan terranes and Baltica, and closure of the northeastern segment of Iapetus. During the same time interval, subduction in the Paleopacific Ocean was predominantly in a retreating mode, although intermittent episodes of contraction closed major marginal basins. In addition, however, there were major disturbances in the Earth tectonic systems during the Ordovician, including an unprecedented rise in marine life diversity, as well as significant fluctuations in sea level, atmospheric CO2, and 87Sr/86Sr and 13C in marine strata carbonates. Stable and radiogenic isotopic data provide evidence for the addition of abundant mantle-derived magma, fluids and large mineral deposits that have a significant mantle-derived component. When considered together, the coeval, profound changes in the style of tectonic activity and the disturbances recorded in Earth Systems are consistent with the emergence of a superplume during the Ordovician. We speculate that the emergence of a superplume triggered by slab avalanche events within the Iapetus and Paleopacific oceans was associated with the establishment of a new geoid high within the Paleopacific regime, the closure of the interior Rheic Ocean and the amalgamation of Laurussia and Gondwana, which was a key event in the Late Carboniferous amalgamation of Pangea.

The Paleo-Asian ocean is defined by units located between the Russian (East European), Siberian, Tarim, and Sino-Korean (North China) continents. The study of the composition, age, and structural position of island-arc magmatic rocks, ophiolites, and high-pressure meta-morphic assemblages and their mutual correlations made it possible to identify similarities and differences in the evolution of the Paleo-Asian and Paleo-Pacific oceans. The initial stage of the evolution of the Paleo-Asian ocean defined its opening at 900 Ma, whereas opening of the Paleo-Pacific took place at 750 to 700 Ma. Closing of the Paleo-Asian ocean in the Carboniferous (NE branch) and the Permian corresponds to the main stage of reorganization and reopening of the Paleo-Pacific.

The maximal opening of the Paleo-Asian ocean occurred after or simultaneously with the first accretion-collision event at 600 to 700 Ma, resulting from the collision of microcontinents and the Siberian continent. Vendian-Early Cambrian boninite-bearing island-arc complexes occur as lavas, sheeted dikes, and sill-dikes associated with gabbro-pyroxenites and ultramafics. These complexes are widely distributed in the Gornyy Altay, East Sayan, and West Mongolian regions and can be considered fragments of a giant boninite-bearing belt.

In the late Early Cambrian, collision of seamounts with an island arc caused the squeezing of the subduction zone and return flows within the accretionary wedge. Serpentinite melange within fragments of ophiolites and high-pressure rocks are typical components of the Late Paleozoic accretionary wedges. Because of Middle Cambrian-Early Ordovician collisional events, two new oceans (Junggar-Irtysh-Kazakhstan and Uralian-South Tien Shan-South Mongolian) were formed. The junction of both oceans in East Mongolia opened to the Paleo-Pacific.

The Chinese Tianshan Orogen marks prolonged and complicated interactions between the southwestern Palaeo-Asian Ocean and surrounding blocks. New and previously published detrital zircon chronological data from modern and palaeo-river sands were compiled to reveal its tectonic evolution. It is characterized by predominant Palaeozoic as well as minor Mesozoic and Precambrian detrital zircon ages with a multimodal characteristic. The oldest Phanerozoic zircon population (peaking at 475 Ma) is a result of subduction and closure of the early Palaeozoic Terskey Ocean. However, the absence of this peak in the Chinese North and southern South Tianshan suggests that subductions of the North and South Tianshan oceans may not have initiated until the Late Ordovician with subsequent 460–390 and 360–320 Ma arc magmatism. Similar to the magmatic suite in classic collisional orogens, the youngest massive 320–270 Ma magmatism is suggested to be post-collisional. The North and South Tianshan oceans therefore probably had their closure to form the Chinese Tianshan Orogen during the late Carboniferous. The weak Mesozoic intra-plate magmatism further rejects a late Permian–Triassic Tianshan Orogen due to a lack of extensive syn- and post-collisional magmatism. Moreover, diverse Precambrian detrital zircon age patterns indicate that the surrounding blocks have distinct evolutionary processes with short-term amalgamation during the Meso- to Neoproterozoic.

The Phanerozoic history of mafic magmatism in the southern Siberian craton included three major events. The earliest event (~500 Ma) recorded in dolerite dikes occurred during accretion and collision at the early stage of the Central Asian orogen. Injection of mafic melts into the upper crust was possible in zones of diffuse extension within the southern Siberian craton which acted as an indenter. The Late Paleozoic event (~275 Ma) produced dikes that intruded in a setting of subduction-related extension at the back of the active continental margin of Siberia during closure of the Mongolia–Okhotsk ocean, as well as slightly older volcanics (290 Ma) in the Transbaikalian segment of the Central Asian orogen. Early Mesozoic magmatism in the southern Siberian craton resulted in numerous 240–250 Ma mafic intrusions in the Angara–Taseeva basin. The intrusions (Siberian traps) appeared as the subducting slab of the Mongolia–Okhotsk ocean interacted with a lower mantle plume. The post-Late Paleozoic ages of flood basalts (290–275 Ma) correspond to progressive northwestward (in present coordinates) motion of the slab beneath the southern craton margin which likely ceased after the slab had reached the zone of the Siberian superplume. Since its consolidation after the Early Mesozoic activity, the crust in the area has no longer experienced extension favorable for intrusion of basaltic magma.

The main stages of the Paleozoic intrusive magmatism in the Urals, 460–420, 415–395, 365–355, 345–330, 320–315, and 290–250 Ma, as well as two virtually amagmatic periods, 375–365 Ma (Frasnian-early Famennian) and 315–300 Ma (Late Carboniferous), are recognized. The Cambrian-Early Ordovician pause predated the onset of igneous activity in the Ural Orogen, while the Early Triassic pause followed by an outburst of trap magmatism postdated this activity. The interval from 460 to 420 Ma is characterized by mantle magma sources that produced ultramafic and mafic primary melts. The dunite-clinopyroxenite-gabbro association of the Platinum Belt and miaskite-carbonatite association are specific derivatives of these melts. The rift-related (?) Tagil Synform functioned at that time. The volcanic-plutonic magmatism in this oldest magmatic zone of the Uralides comprises gabbro, gabbro-granitoid, and gabbro-syenite series and comagmatic volcanic rocks. After a break almost 20 Ma long, this magmatism ended in the Early Devonian (405–400 Ma) with the formation of small K-Na gabbro-granitoid plutons. The magmatic intervals of 415–395, 365–355, and 320–315 Ma are characterized by the mantle-crustal nature. The first interval accompanied obduction of the oceanic lithosphere on the continental crust. The subsequent magmatic episodes presumably were related to the subduction of the island-arc (?) lithosphere beneath the continent and to the collision. The intense granitoid magmatism started 365–355 Ma ago. As in the following interval 320–315 Ma, the tonalite-granodiorite complexes, accompanied by hydrous basic magmatism, were formed. Amphibole gabbro and diorite served as a source of heat and material for the predominant tonalite and granodiorite. The Permian granitic magmatism had crustal sources. Thus, the mantle-derived Ordovician-Middle Devonian magmatism gave way to the mantle-crustal Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous plutonic complexes, while the latter were followed by the crustal Permian granites. This sequence was disturbed by rifting and formation of continental arcs accompanied by specific Early Carboniferous Magnitogorsk gabbro-granitoid series and Early Permian Stepnoe monzodiorite-granite series, which deviate from the general evolutional trend.

The dike swarms of the entire Urals are classified for the first time; the related igneous complexes associated with them in space and time are named. The following types and chronological levels of the Uralian dikes are distinguished (proper names are given after type localities). The epicontinental type comprises the Middle Riphean Mashak, Late Riphean Arsha-Serebryanka, Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician Kidryasovo-Lemva, Ordovician-Silurian Ushat, Devoninan Inzer-Timaiz (the most extended of all), Early Carboniferous Magnitogorsk-Mugodzhary, and Triassic Borisovo dike swarms. Many of them are probably related to plume events. The existence of the Early Riphean dike complex remains unclear. Oceanic (spreading or suprasubduction) dike-in-dike type: Ordovician Man’ya oceanic type, Devonian Aktogai backarc and Khabarny suprasubduction types. The igneous complexes associated with dike swarms are rather diverse. In addition to rhyolite dikes, in many cases determining the contrasting character of magmatism, large comagmatic gabbro and gabbro-granite intrusions are noted, as well as minor intrusions of subalkali granitoids, syenites, and, apparently, carbonatites and kimberlites. Flood basalt fields are noted at the periphery of the Urals, implying the occurrence of a feeding dike swarm beneath them.

Geological data on the Precambrian basic complexes of the Siberian Craton and their isotopic age are considered. The three main episodes of Precambrian basic magmatism of Siberia correspond to certain stages of the geodynamic evolution of the craton and the Earth as a whole. In the Late Paleoproterozoic, largely in the south and the north of the craton, the basic rocks were emplaced against the background of post-collision extension, which followed the preceding collision-accretion stage responsible for the formation of the craton. In the Mesoproterozoic, primarily in the north of the craton, basic magmatism was controlled by dispersed within-plate extension apparently caused by the impact of a mantle plume. Neoproterozoic basic magmatism widespread in the southern and southeastern parts of the craton was caused by rifting, which accompanied breakdown of the Rodinia supercontinent and opening of the Paleoasian ocean along the southern margin of the Siberian Craton.

Formation of the Urals Volcanic-Hosted Massive Sulphide (VHMS) deposits is considered to be related with the intra-oceanic stage of the island arc(s) development in Late Ordovician – Middle Devonian time (ca. 460–385 Ma) based on the biostratigraphic record of ore-hosting sedimentary rocks. However, the known radiometric ages of ore hosting volcanics are very limited. Here we present direct dating results of sulphide mineralisation from the Yaman-Kasy and Kul-Yurt-Tau VHMS deposits using Re-Os isotope systematics showing similar mineralisation ages of 362 ± 9 Ma and 363 ± 1 Ma. These ages coincide with the previous Re-Os dating of the Alexandrinskoe (355 ± 15 Ma) and Dergamysh (366 ± 2 Ma) VHMS deposits. This Late Devonian (Famennian) age corresponds to the late stage of the ‘Magnitogorsk arc – Laurussia continent’ collision event and coincides with a beginning of large scale subduction-related granitoid magmatism. The younger mineralisation age relative to the biostratigraphic ages of host rocks is interpreted as one of the latest episodes of the multi-stage history of VHMS deposits development. Ar-Ar ages of sericites from metasomatic rocks of Barsuchi Log and Babaryk deposits show even younger ages clustering around 345 Ma, and testify another late hydrothermal event in the history of the Urals VHMS deposits.

U–Pb (SIMS) dating of zircons from granite of the Petrokamensk gabbro–granitoid complex, marking termination of the Devonian island–arc magmatism in the Verkhisetsk–Tura Zone of the Middle Urals, gave an age of 386 ± 3 Ma. Zircons from the West Verkhisetsk granitoids, the formation of which corresponds to the beginning stage of magmatism of the continental margin in the region, yielded ages of 386.6 ± 4.1 and 381.8 ± 6.0 Ma. This suggests that the change in the regime of the island–arc geodynamic mode to an active continental margin took place at the boundary of the Middle and Late Devonian. The upper boundary of existence of the continental margin subduction zone is determined by the closure of the Ural paleo-ocean and the beginning of continental collision processes, which resulted in accumulation of flysch in the Ural foreland trough from the second half of the Bashkirian Stage.

The patterns and history of Mesozoic–Cenozoic plume magmatism in the Arctic is considered in relation with suprasubduction volcanism and geodynamic events. The Mesozoic–Cenozoic magmatic history of the area includes seven stages, distinguished by correlation of ages and compositions of volcanics associated with mid-ocean rifting, plumes, and subduction; three of seven stages correspond to global events at 230–200 Ma, 130–120 Ma, and 40–30 Ma. The reported study supports the inferred inverse correlation between plate velocities and amount of subduction-related volcanism. The gained knowledge is used for paleotectonic reconstructions in the Arctic.
