In view of the striking similarities between Quasi-Stellar Objects on the one hand and the nuclei of N galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies and normal galaxies on the other, the possibility that QSOs might belong to an early phase in the evolutionary sequence of galaxies is explored. In this connection, considering the fact that nebulosities have been detected around five QSOs, the implications of the hypothesis that a QSO consists of a bright central object embedded in an extended nebulosity have been examined. In particular, the ratio a between the intensity of the bright central object and that of the surrounding nebulosity in the visual band of wavelengths has been calculated by the colour-given method for a sample of 81 QSOs with emission redshiftz0.76. This ratio a has been used to calculate the apparent visual magnitudem(V) and the absolute visual magnitudeM(V) of the bright central object (Nu) as well as that of the surounding nebulosity (Neb) of the QSOs in the sample and a criterion has been proposed as to the detectability of the surrounding nebulosities. Similar calculations have been made for N galaxies, Seyfert galaxies and normal galaxies. It is found that the values of log a, M(V) Nu and M(V) Neb for the four classes of extragalactic objects show a definite trend and suggest an evolutionary sequence: QSOsN galaxiesSeyfert galaxiesnormal galaxies.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the optical continua of QSOs, BL Lac objects and the nuclei of Seyfert, N and normal galaxies arise due to incoherent synchrotron radiation from electrons and consequently the flux of radiation in the optical continua of these objects is given by the power law:F(v)v is examined. Following Kinman, spectral indices B–V and U–B in(B-V) and(U-B) colours as well as their average and difference have been defined and calculated for samples of 227 QSOs, 32 BL Lac objects and nuclei of 62 Seyfert, 12 N and 7 normal galaxies. Here has been assumed to be an estimate of the spectral index . On the other hand, has been regarded as a measure of departure from the power law. On the basis of this, the distributions of and in QSOs, BL Lac objects and the nuclei of Seyfert, N and normal galaxies have been studied. The value of depends mainly on the balance of the energy loss due to synchrotron radiation and the rate of replenishment of energy by injection of high energy electrons in the radiating region. The increase in the value of and therefore that of indicates that the activity in the object is slowing down and the object is growing older. Assuming that the QSOs, BL Lac objects and the nuclei of Seyfert, N and normal galaxies essentially represent different phases in the evolutionary sequence of extragalactic objects, we suggest that they may be arranged in the sequence: QSOsBL Lac objects Seyferts 1N galaxies Seyferts 2 Normal galaxies in the decreasing order of activity in the core or nuclei of these objects. On leave of absence from the Government Science College, Rajpur, M.P., India.  相似文献

An analysis of radio and FIR emission in over 1500IRAS selected galaxies produces a good linear correlationbetween radio and FIR luminosity, indicating that star formationin normal field galaxies dominates the infrared luminosityin the local volume. Galaxies with clear radio-excess (definedas having at least5 times larger radio flux over expected from FIR) are identified as hosting a radio AGN, and they account for onlyabout 1% of the whole sample. This fraction increases to 10% among themore luminous galaxies with L 1.4GHz 1023 W Hz-1 (equivalently L 60m 1011 L), however. The characteristic mid-IR excess of a Seyfert nucleus is ubiquitously present amongthe radio-excess objects, suggesting that mid-IR excess isa robust tracer of an AGN despite the high mid-IR opacity. We conclude that about 30% of the luminous infrared galaxies(L 60m 1011 L) host an AGN based on themid-IR excess, and about 40% of the mid-IR excess AGNs alsohost a radio AGN. A VLA imaging survey of a distance limited sample of IR luminousgalaxies has revealed the presence of 100 kpc scale giant radioplumes in 3 out of 9 cases (Mrk 231, Mrk 273, NGC 6240). Theirlarge spatial extent, energetics, and presence of a powerful AGN in each case suggests that an AGN is the power source. Such plumesare not detected in other ultraluminous infrared galaxies which lack clear evidence for an AGN, such as Arp 220.  相似文献

It is generally believed that the only known reaction in whichC p violation definitely occurs is in the decay of the long-lived neutralK-mesonK L +,K L 00, andK L e ±± v (Christensonet al., 1964: Sivaram, 1982). No attempt has been made to studyC p violation outside theK-system for quite a long time. Recently,C p violation effects have been reported in the hyperon decays through the reaction (Bassompierre, 1990) with asymmetry at the level of 10–3 to 10–4.In this paper we examine the possible implications of hyperon decays asymmetry in some cosmic-ray sources. We identify cosmic-ray sources where such decays can occur. The signatures for measuring these asymmetries in both the laboratory and cosmic-ray sources are examined. It is found that there is a correlation between these signatures. We conclude that hyperon decays contribute significantly toC p violation observed in cosmic-ray sources.  相似文献

The contribution to the galactic abundance of He and heavy elements by stellar nucleosynthesis is calculated as a function of time, keeping account of present knowledge about stellar and galactic evolution. A model is used which distinguishes the phase of the contracting halo from the subsequent history of the disc. Various uncertainties involved both in stellar and in galactic evolutionary theory are discussed. The amount of4He produced by stars of different masses and ejected in interstellar medium is fairly well known from stellar theory, while we have assumed its primordial abundance as a free parameter, ranging from 0 up to 0.4. We find that stellar activity provides a significant contribution to the cosmic4He, though not sufficient to explain the observed abundance. The best agreement with observational data (Y 0.26 andY now0.28) is obtained starting with a primordial abundanceY =(0.20–0.23), which is consisten with the Big-Bang theory predictions and with recent observational estimates. The contribution to the abundance of heavy elements depends on the last stellar stages and on the final explosion mechanism, which are only now beginning to be understood. Nevertheless, in the framework of present theories, we individuate a stellar evolutionary scheme reproducing the observedZ abundances for Populationi and Populationii stars, with the correctly estimated Y/Z value. In this scheme, only stars belonging to two narrow mass ranges (10m/m 15 andm/m 80) are allowed to eject metal-enriched matter, possibly with the solar (C+O)/(Si+Fe) ratio.  相似文献

In the present paper we consider the frequency spectrum, time variations and polarization of the flux of synchrotron radio emission from a source which consists of two components flying apart in opposite directions with relativistic velocities at the same time expanding. A comparison of the calculations with unusual double-humped spectra of some radio sources suggests the existence in their nuclei of such double components which are at an early stage of relativistic ejection. In particular the double-humped spectra of 3C 84 and 4C 50.11/NRAO-150 can be interpreted in the proposed model (see Figures 6, 7, 12 and Equations (22), (32)). In this model the ratio of maximum frequenciesv 1m/v 2m should be larger than that of the maximum fluxesF v1m (1)/F v2m (2).The linear polarization of the double-humped spectrum is analysed. It is found under rather specific conditions that at the low-frequency maximum of the spectrum of the type given in Figures 6 and 7 a lower degree of linear polarization is expected than at the high-frequency maximum. In addition, it is natural to expect the appearance of circular polarization in sources with internal largescale relativistic motions. The time variations of the radio flux of some QSS, N-galaxies, and nuclei of Seyfert galaxies can also be interpreted in the suggested model of two clouds of relativistic electrons flying apart in different directions with relativistic velocities while simultaneously expanding. For example, Figure 11 shows the flux variations at 3 frequencies whose ratio is 16:4:1. This picture is similar to the observations of 3C 279 at 3.4 mm, 2 cm and 6 cm, and several other sources (Kellermann andPauliny-Toth, 1968).There have been a number of attempts to explain the flux variations of radio sources in the model of successive, but unrelated outbursts of clouds of relativistic electrons caused by supernova explosions. This model meets many difficulties and seems improbable. In this paper we suggest experimental tests to make a final choice between the model of double components flying apart relativistically and the model of two successive, but unrelated, outbursts from supernovae. If the suggested model of explosions in radio sources is correct, then the processes of variable energy output in such different populations as QSS, N-galaxies, radio-galaxies and the nuclei of normal galaxies have a similar nature, differing only in quantity.Translated by D. The observed dependences of the spectral indices () of extragalactic radio sources on redshift (z) and radio luminosity (P) are investigated taking into account the possible luminosity selection effects in bright source samples. Using the steep spectrum (>0.5) extended (D>20 Kpc) sources from a compilation of three complete samples, the contribution of the luminosity selection effects to the observed -z relation is quantitatively estimated. We show that a highly significant fraction (54%) of the observed spectral steepening with redshift can be attributed to these luminosity selection effects present in most well-studied flux density-limited samples.  相似文献

The plot of the X-ray luminosity (in 0.5–4.5 KeV band and for Friedmann universe withq 0=+1) of the brightest X-ray QSO at each redshift against redshift shows that the X-ray luminosity increases more or less monotonically with redshift uptoz3. This result has been attributed to the selection effect known as the volume effect. When this selection effect is taken into account in the optical, radio and X-ray windows of the electromagnetic spectrum, a sample of the brightest X-ray QSO's is obtained which shows a small dispersion in X-ray luminosity: logL 1=46.15±0.25. The redshift-X-ray flux density plot for this sample gives slopes of both regression lines which agree, at a confidence level of 95% or greater, with the slopes expected theoretically if the redshifts of the QSO's are cosmological in nature.  相似文献

A new type of cosmic virial theorem is derived, representing a relation among the two-point and three-point galaxy correlation functions and the mean square relative peculiar velocity v 2(r) averaged over pairs of galaxies separated by distancer. The two correlation functions seem to be fairly well known, but v 2(r) at best is only very roughly estimated from available data. It might be possible to improve the estimate through a systematic program of redshift measurements in sample areas. If so, the cosmic virial theorem might yield an interesting measure of the mean mass density due to galaxies.Research supported in part by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Highly ionized gas has been detected at large distances from the nucleus in several classes of active galaxies. There is evidence that photoionization by the active nucleus may be the most relevant mechanism for the observed ionization. The spatial distribution of such gas has a conical shape, whose vertex points towards the nucleus and the axis is closely oriented with the radio structure. This scenario suggests collimation or anisotropy of the ionizing continuum.A geometrically thick accretion disk may produce such ionizing spectrum. We use a simple model for a thick accretion disk around a supermassive black hole and a photoionization code to make theoretical predictions. Results are compared with the observational data (for radio and Seyfert galaxies).Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

Optical and radio data about N-galaxies (NG) as known at present are summarised and compared with the corresponding data about Seyfert galaxies (SyG), blue compact galaxies (BCG) and quasistellar objects (QSG and QSS). Information about normal galaxies and Haro and Markaryan objects is also utilized. The luminosity functions of different sources in the optical- and radio-ranges are constructed, based on the observational facts. Along with some general properties of NG and SyG, BCG, QSS and QSG, a number of differences between these objects are noted (these are summarised in Table II). In particularUBV-colours of NG and SyG change inside ring diaphragms for various diaphragm radii in quite different manners. Taking into account all these differences, it is concluded that N-galaxies are neither distant SyG nor QSS at small distances and therefore relatively weak, but are the representatives of a different metagalactic population.Arguments about the existence of stars in N-galaxies as well as a central central source of non-stellar nature are discussed. The question of possible evolutionary relations among the sequence of metagalactic populations Ir-S-E-D-(BCG-NG)-(QSG-QSS) is touched upon briefly.Translated from the Russian by D. F. The variation of spectral index 1.4 5 with luminosity (P 1.4) was investigated for Fanaroff and Riley type II galaxies and also for type I and type I/II galaxies. To reduce the effect of the redshift dependence of luminosity, samples which did not have widely different median redshifts were used and the data was binned into redshift ranges.By a comparison of the median spectral indices in different redshift bins for FRII galaxies, no dependence of spectral index was formed on redshift. However, an increase in spectral index with increasing luminosity was found. The results for FRI and FRI/II galaxies were similar to those for the FRII galaxies.  相似文献

We propose an evolutionary model for dwarf galaxies in which initially metal-poor gas-rich dwarf irregular (dI) galaxies evolve through bursting Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) stages and eventually fade from the BCD phase to become dwarf ellipticals (dE). During the bursting phase the surface brightness of the galaxy increases rapidly due to enhanced OB star formation. The source of fuel for the intermittent bursts of star formation is assumed to be primordial gas which continues to collapse onto the already formed central structure. The dE galaxies form as a result of eventual gas depletion through star formation. With this proposed dIBCDdE evolutionary sequence we can explain the similar photometric structure of the different dwarf types and the differences in their star formation rates, surface brightnesses,Hi contents and metallicities. A final central BCD burst can account for the nucleation in brighter dEs and their residual star formation, while earlier more widespread star formation bursts would fade to give an irregular dI. Inflow of gas may allow dEs to be less flattened than dIs.Using galaxy fading and metallicity models we can reproduce the observed number ratiosN(dI)N(BCD) andN(dI)N(dE) and also the observed metallicity magnitude relation of local dwarf spheroidal galaxies.  相似文献

The conventional interpretation of the cosmic background radiation (CBR) as a relic of the Big Bang assumes that the intergalactic medium is highly transparent to radio frequency radiation. Previous work (Lerner, 1990) used the well-known correlation of IR and radio luminosities of spiral galaxies to test this assumption. That analysis, using 237 Shapley-Ames galaxies showed that radio luminosity (L R ) for a given IR-luminosity, declines with distance, implying that the IGM strongly absorbs radio frequency radiation. That absorption has now been confirmed using a sample of 301 IR-bright galaxies. Using two independent methods of determining the correlation of IR and radio luminosities of spiral and interacting galaxies, the sample shows that for a givenL IR ,L R D –0.32±0.04 over a range of distances from 0.7-300 Mpc. (H 0 = 75 km s–1 Mpc–1). The correlation is significant at the 8 or 10–14 level. Absorption by the IGM is the only reasonable explanation for this correlation. The existence of such absorption implies that neither the isotropy nor the spectrum of the CBR are primordial and that neither is evidence for a Big Bang.  相似文献

We emphasize the sharp distinctions between different one-body gravitational trajectories made by the ratio of time averagesR(t)E kin/E pot.R is calculated as a function of the eccentricity (e) and of the energy (E). Whent, independently ofe andE, R1/2 for closed orbits (this clearly illustrates the fulfillment of the virial theorem in classical mechanics); whereasR1, at any time, for open orbits.  相似文献

For a number of extragalactic sources of infrared radiation, for example some quasars and nuclei of Class I Seyfert galaxies that are also radio sources, there is a characteristic maximum in the radiation spectrum atv1011 Hz. We discuss a model in which this feature is regarded as intrinsic to the process of electron production, and in which the radiation is produced by the synchrotron mechanism. A two-component version of the model can be employed in the interpretation of the composite radiation spectra of several sources — 3C 84 (NGC 1275), 3C 120 and 3C 273.  相似文献

The distribution of the absorption lines in the L forest of QSOs is re-examined in relation to both absorption and emission redshifts by analyzing a sample consisting of 20 QSO L forests. On the one hand, the -value in the relationN(z abs)=N 0(1+z abs) is re-estimated by applying the maximum likelihood (ML) method to all the L forests in our sample as a whole as well as to the forests for individual QSOs. The global estimated is 2.20±0.28 and both the quasars with highest and lowestz em do not individually have a significant effect on it. A non-parametric test on the estimate of from individual QSOs shows that there is no significant difference between the numbers of positive and negative -values. This does not, therefore, favour the idea that for individual QSOsN(z abs) decreases with increasingz abs.On the other hand, the possible correlation between the absorption line density and the emission redshift of the QSO itself, which was found by Bianet al. (1986, 1988) and re-discovered independently by Tytler (1987), is shown once again not only by the largerz em QSOs having larger mean density, but more importantly, at a rather high confidence level, by the fact that, at the same values ofz abs, QSOs with largerz em possess a greater number of L absorption lines.A discussion of the inverse effect suggests that it is still hard to say whether this effect really exists.  相似文献

Results are presented of an investigation of solar flare X-ray spectra in the region 1.70–1.95 Å, obtained aboard the Intercosmos-4 satellite during the maximum of solar activity (October–November, 1970). With the use of 6 high resolution spectra in the region 1.85–1.87 Å the identification of lines due to 18 transitions of 2p 1s type, consisting of the resonance, intercombination and forbidden Fe xxv ion lines and the satellite Fe xxiv lines has been performed. With the use of the recent laboratory data the averaged wavelengths of the lines were obtained confirming the theoretically calculated ones with an accuracy about ± 0.0004 Å. A variable Doppler shift of the Fe xxv resonance lines was observed for the flare of November 16, 1970, which points to hot plasma motions with velocities up to 400 km s-1.  相似文献

Absorption features shown by QSOs may be identified and measured as reported absorption redshift systems, or may remain unidentified and not measured. The features are believed to be observed in objects with high emission redshifts (z em), although no quantitative analysis exists to examine any such preferential trend, except that by Basu (1982). However, redshift data have since increased enormously both in range of the redshift spectrum and in number. Furthermore, the earlier analysis was based on only the reported absorption redshifts while unidentified absorption features were not dealt with. The present paper analyses the updated data, both identified and unidentified features. It is found that absorption features may be expressed as exponential function ofz em, and upper limits are set for the percentage of QSOs showing absorption features. Finally, an entirely new method of analysis confirms the earlier conclusion of Basu (1982) that the appearance of absorbing clouds is closely associated with the creation of the QSOs, the two may be having a common cause. It is suggested that absorption QSOs may be a separate class of QSOs whose birth is accompanied with creation of absorbing clouds.  相似文献

The pulsed plasma probe technique has been expanded to include simultaneous determinations of absolute electron density, density fluctuations, electron temperature, and mean-ion-mass with resolution limited only by probe geometry, sheath size, and telemetry. The technique has been designed to test for coupling of electron density variations and ion composition irregularities in multi-component plasmas by the comparison of electron density fluctuation power spectraP N(k) and a newly-developed diagnostic parameter, the mean-ion-mass fluctuation spectraM i/M iP M(k). In addition, the experiment extends satellite-borne irregularity spectral analyses down to the 5–20 m range while attempting to identify F-region plasma instability processes on the basis of characteristics inN e,T e, N e,P N,M i, andP M. Initial results demonstrate the expanded diagnostic capability for high spatial resolution measurements of mean-ion-mass and provide experimental evidence for the role of ion composition in multi-stepped plasma instability processes. Specific results include a spectral indexX n inP N=A nf–X n of 1.6–2.9 over the wavelength range from 1 km to 6 m under conditions identified with an unstable equatorial nighttime ionosphere. Simultaneous measurements ofM i/M i(P M=A M f –X m) andN e/N e(P N=A n f –X n) have shown a general behavior tending to lower power (A m<A n) and softer spectra (X m<X n) in ion mass fluctuations when compared with fluctuations in total plasma density. Limited analyses of the two power spectral elements raise hopes for the differentiation between plasma mechanisms that can lead to similar indices inP N.Paper originally submitted to the journalSpace Science Instrumentation.  相似文献
